Eastern Cape police have confirmed that the decomposed body discovered near Peddie in March is that of 38-year-old Thulani Ngqongqo
According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana
DNA test results officially identified the body
and funeral preparations are currently underway
Ngqongqo, a father of four from Mdantsane
leaving East London to return to his job at Reef Tankers in Gqeberha
and both his personal and work phones were later found to be switched off
A desperate search followed — family members scoured hospitals and mortuaries and worked closely with police
it emerged that Ngqongqo’s white Toyota Corolla Quest had been captured by Agri EC surveillance cameras travelling inland
nearly 120km in the opposite direction of Gqeberha
investigators suspected Ngqongqo had already died
a decomposed body was discovered in thick bushes between Mankone and Gwabeni villages along the R345 between Peddie and Dikeni
While the body matched Ngqongqo’s description
A close friend described the weeks of uncertainty as “the most painful part” of the ordeal
“Not knowing whether Thulani was dead or alive — that hope that maybe he would just walk through the door — it haunted all of us
we slowly began to realise he might not be coming home.”
Ngqongqo’s disappearance and confirmed death have sent shockwaves through those who knew him
from family and friends to the broader communities he had touched throughout his life
he was working on a deeply personal book in isiXhosa titled Mzukulwana (“grandchild”)
reflecting on being raised by his grandparents
Thulani wanted to write a love letter to his children
He also had a passion for youth development
Through his involvement with the NGO Siguquk’iKamva
he was helping learners in disadvantaged communities obtain their learners’ and driver’s licenses for free.
80 learners from Wongalethu High School in Mdantsane were enrolled in the programme
searching for funding to expand the initiative
His passing has left an undeniable void — not only in the lives of those who loved him but in the vision he was working so hard to build
“Our son may not grow up remembering his father’s voice or laugh
I will tell him about the man his father tried to be
and how he was working to leave something behind that mattered.”
Brigadier Gantana confirmed that a case of murder has been opened at Tyefu Police Station
and police are urging anyone with information to come forward

“I had to take my passport and a medal that I had previously won to the elder in the village because no one would believe that I could be representing South Africa,” Lamani said in Paris this week

Tom Peddie shifts from vice president of marketplace partners to replace Scott Uzzell
Uzzell has decided to leave the sports apparel giant
Nike said that Peddie’s replacement in his marketplace role will be announced soon
By the time Peddie makes the switch, the company will have a new CEO, as longtime Nike executive Elliott Hill comes out of retirement on Monday to replace John Donahoe
who himself will have retired the previous day
Nike is pulling executives out of retirement to help recalibrate its sales strategy
according to the most recent Piper Sandler survey
Under Donahoe the company moved to correct a hard swerve toward direct-to-consumer that analysts and now the company itself say underestimated the importance of wholesale partnerships to move sales. Investors have also dragged the brand to court over the strategy
Peddie’s responsibilities included leading global sales and emerging markets
That experience appears to be instrumental to the task of rebalancing wholesale and DTC
according to a statement from Craig Williams
“No one is more qualified to lead North America’s next stage of strategic growth
Tom’s outstanding relationships with our retailers and deep experience developing an integrated marketplace will be critical to accelerating our future success.”

The 30-year veteran of the athletics retailer is set to return as the company shifts its direct-to-consumer strategy
Peddie is rejoining Nike as the athletics giant faces criticism — and even litigation — over its direct-to-consumer strategy
“Tom spent many years at Nike leading Global Sales before becoming the GM of Emerging Markets
and then heading up the North America geography,” the company said in a statement
“He is a seasoned leader with a proven business track record and experience building high-performing teams.” Nike did not immediately to Retail Dive’s requests for comment around Peddie’s start date
The challenges around its strategy may put Nike in a vulnerable position as others in the footwear and apparel space
according to Wedbush analysts Tom Nikic and Matt Quigley
“The Adidas brand is clearly starting to regain momentum
thanks largely to the trend towards their retro styles (Samba
etc.),” the analysts said in a Friday note
given that Nike will be pulling back distribution of the styles that cater to the shoe-obsessed ‘sneakerhead’ community (a customer sub-segment they've struggled to address ex-Yeezy)
they could potentially pick up wallet share among these consumers now that Nike's Jordan and Dunk styles are declining.”
While smaller brands like On and Hoka have become appealing to customers
they are unlikely to displace Nike as a leading player in the sector
a concern “is that they are gaining market share at a time when Nike is losing it.”
Nike lowered its full-year guidance after ending its most recent quarter with a revenue decline
Nike’s wholesale sector grew 5% in Q4 and was up 1% for the year
In contrast, Adidas raised its full-year guidance in April
saying it expects currency-neutral revenues to increase at a mid- to high-single-digit rate in 2024
Previously the company expected a mid-single-digit rate increase
Separately, Nike also recently made changes to its board of directors. Alan Graf Jr. resigned from the board last month, shrinking the board's size to 12 members, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission
it remains key to growth for many retailers
But the era of the DTC brand as we know it is over

He returned to the company after a 30-year career at Nike in global sales before being the general manager of Emerging Markets
Nike noted in a media release that it will also name a new VP of marketplace partners soon
Stifel Analyst Jim Duffy remarked in a note that Peddie’s reassignment is “likely foreshadowing additional leadership shakeups ahead” following the hiring of Nike veteran Elliott Hill as CEO on October 14
He noted that under Peddie’s oversight
Nike’s North America revenue grew at a low-single-digit rate from October 2016 through April 2020
while Emerging Markets expanded at a double-digit rate on a currency-neutral basis from FY14 to FY16
and we expect it will take time to revitalize company culture and ultimately reinvigorate brand momentum
We continue to expect CY25 is likely to be a transition year for the brand and expect additional leadership changes ahead
we struggle to support an upside case from current share levels absent marketplace evidence of improved visibility to revenue stabilization/inflection and remain comfortable at HOLD.”
