AmaZulu FC let a lead slip in their Betway Premiership match against Polokwane City which ended in a 1-1 draw at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday night Therefore, Usuthu remained sixth in the league standings after registering their fourth draw of the season. Arthur Zwane's side will wrap up their season with a match against Orlando Pirates on May 24 in Durban. Rise and Shine, on the other hand, also remained seventh in the standings after fighting back to deny Usuthu a win. Coach Phuti Mohafe will be determined to ensure that his side returns to winning ways against Cape Town City at home on 17 May. It took just seven minutes for Usuthu to break the deadlock through Tebogo Mashigo, who cut inside and unleashed a thunderous shot which beat goalkeeper Brian Okoth to hand AmaZulu a 1-0 lead and it was the 22-year-old's first-ever goal as a professional footballer. Rise and Shine launched several attacks, but they were restricted to long-range attempts. Keeper Richards Ofori pulled off saves to deny Thato Letshedi, Nyakala Raphadu, Bonginkosi Dlamini and Samuel Nana between the 18th and 33rd minutes. The score was 1-0 to AmaZulu at halftime. Polokwane surged forward in numbers after the restart and they were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute after Thembela Sikhakhane had committed a foul in the box. Lebohang Nkaki stepped up and converted the resultant penalty to make it 1-1, making it two goals in as many matches. Both teams then pushed for a late winning goal in the latter stages of the match and Ramahlwe Mphahlele came close to scoring when his attempt hit the woodwork in stoppage time. Ultimately, the match ended in a 1-1 draw on the night. It was the perfect start for the host on seven minutes when Tebogo Mashigo cut in to the edge of the box and fired in off the underside of the bar. Arthur Zwane’s men targeted more goals thereafter and went close getting their reward through Thabede and Tshepang Moremi, but neither proved decisive in front of goal. Rise and Shine enjoyed equal penetrations as Raphadu and Bonginkosi Dlamini took aim from around the area, but were unable to beat goalkeeper Richard Ofori. The visitors made a substitution before the start of the second half, with Simon Ramabu coming on for Nana, while Usuthu were unchanged. Rise and Shine were inspired by the change and levelled matters nine minutes into the second half when Lebohang Nkaki netted from the penalty spot following a foul on Dlamini by Thembela Sikhakhane. Zwane’s outfit pushed eagerly to regain the lead a little later as substitute Ethan Brooks latched on a lay-off from Etiosa Ighodaro to get goal-side, but he was unable to find target. The opportunities continued falling for Usuthu, with Moremi notably going narrowly wide of the bottom-corner from the edge of the area following a layoff by Ekstein. POLOKWANE – A 68-year-old pastor is expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 5, 2025, after being arrested for allegedly providing false information to the police regarding a staged hijacking. According to Limpopo police, the pastor opened a case at Westenburg Police Station on May 2, claiming he was hijacked at gunpoint on April 11, 2025. He alleged that the incident occurred after he had picked up two unknown men while driving towards Polokwane in a Daihatsu Terios. He further claimed the suspects hijacked the vehicle and that he later found it abandoned along the R37 road, stripped of its gearbox. However, a thorough investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) revealed inconsistencies in the pastor’s statement. Police established that on the day of the alleged hijacking, the pastor had actually experienced mechanical issueswith the vehicle and had called a tow truck to transport it to a car repair clinic in Lebowakgomo. He was accompanied by his driver at the time and had made a partial payment for gearbox repairs. The investigation also found that the gearbox was stolen after the vehicle was already in the workshop, and there was no evidence of a hijacking. When confronted with the findings, the pastor reportedly confessed that the hijacking had been fabricated. He was immediately arrested for defeating the ends of justice by providing false information to law enforcement. Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the arrest and emphasized the seriousness of reporting false crimes. “Lying to the police wastes valuable resources and delays investigations into actual crimes. This arrest sends a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated,” he said. The case is still under investigation, and more charges could follow depending on the outcome. AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane has described their penultimate Premiership clash against Polokwane City in Umlazi as the game of their lives Usuthu will host City at King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday night (7.30pm kick-off) eager to bag all three points This will not only be their penultimate game of the season but one that could help them finish in the top eight after blowing hot and cold this campaign AmaZulu have been their worst enemies this season as they dropped points that they were expected to bag should they ensure that they keep all points in Durban on Friday night they’ll all but buy themselves some breathing space from City Speaking to the club’s media unit on Thursday ‘10111’ acknowledged they can’t afford to slip up when they face Rise and Shine this is the most important game of our season It’s like a cup final for us,” Zwane explained We are playing against a team that has got one game in hand We are only leading them by a one-point difference “We know that the only time we can be able to consolidate our position for now is to get maximum “We have to face the fact that we have let ourselves down on a number of occasions this season Zwane is in his second job as the sole head coach of a first team having assumed that role after his then-co-coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi resigned earlier this year Zwane has always been an advocate of players leaving their sweat and blood on the pitch After being demoted by Kaizer Chiefs after a relatively below-par first season at the helm his admirers felt that he wasn’t given enough time to prove himself has continued to demand the very best from his team And that’s why he feels they can’t crash out of the running to qualify for next season’s MTN8 now “We are not putting the players under pressure but those are the demands of this level because we can’t be blowing hot and cold,” Zwane said and a game that will test our character as to whether we are a good enough team to be at this level even though we are in a better position compared to last season Zwane’s vision for Usuthu aligns with that of club president Sandile Zungu who said he wants the team to be a top-four side season in and season out But while that is a far-fetched dream for this season as they won’t surpass the 41-point tally of the fourth-placed Stellenbosch FC Zwane believes a top-eight finish could still serve as a consolation families and everyone that has been cheering us up through thick and thin as they never lost hope or gave up on us,” Zwane said That’s the message that I am going to drive to the players regularly.” YOU ARE HERE > Home > News > Pirates Dig Deep to Outlast Polokwane Orlando Pirates marked their return to Betway Premiership action with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday It’s a result that made it three league wins in as many visits to the venue for the Buccaneers who completed a double over Rise and Shine to reduce the gap at the top to 12 points Following their gruelling midweek cup assignment in Algeria the Buccaneers remained on the road as they resumed their league campaign They were not immediately in control as the home side threatened from the get-go in Polokwane but managed an early attempt at goal in the seventh minute The chance was sparked by Relebohile Mofokeng who worked himself into space on the left before drawing a save from goalkeeper Brian Bwire The hosts hit back with a shot of their own seconds later as Oswin Appollis fancied his hand from a long way out bringing out the best in Sipho Chaine who displayed great agility to keep his effort out Pirates found some rhythm as the game progressed with Mofokeng forcing Bwire into another save when he went direct from a free kick in the 18th minute Their best chance of the first half fell to the same player whose first touch directed the ball wide after doing all the hard work in getting behind the defence to meet a brilliant ball from Mohau Nkota Bwire continued to frustrate the visitors throughout the first period as he kept out another long-range effort Chaine meanwhile had a slightly quieter afternoon with the Bucs putting on a solid shift in dealing with the threat posed by the Limpopo outfit Nothing could separate the two sides at the break and the Buccaneers were the first to come  knocking after the restart They did so through a rather confident attempt from defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi which nearly delivered the breakthrough as he fired just inches wide from almost 50 metres out The visitors continued to probe without much luck as the home side remained resilient at the back It took a 67th minute set piece to breach Bwire’s defences as the Kenyan shot-stopper fumbled Kabelo Dlamini’s ball into the box allowing defender Nkosinathi Sibisi to finish from close range Rise and Shine sprung into life after finding themselves trailing demanding plenty of defensive work from Sibisi and Mbokazi The duo was equal to the task throughout as the likes of Appollis and Bonginkosi Dlamini looked to draw their side level The game could have been put to bed in injury time when Mofokeng released Mabasa It looked as if the Buccaneers would rue the missed opportunity with their opponents unrelenting in their pursuit for the equaliser Those fears were allayed as they eventually saw out the remaining minutes to claim another crucial win on the Pirates this weekend as they resume their Betway Premiership campaign with a trip to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium for a clash against Polokwane City The demands of the business end of the season do not let up for the Soweto Giants who take to the road once more for Saturday’s encounter They renew rivalries with Rise and Shine as they switch focus back to the domestic league after a gruelling outing in continental cup competition The hard-fought 1-0 CAF Champions League quarter-final victory against MC Alger on Tuesday was a welcome result to kick off a new month for Pirates and they could make it a perfect week by claiming three crucial points against their Premiership rivals Their journey to Polokwane comes at a precarious time in their league campaign as they cannot afford many slip-ups in their attempts to plug what remains a significant gap between themselves and the table-topping Mamelodi Sundowns reduced by three from the previous game week thanks to the Buccaneers’ impressive 2-1 win at home in last month’s top-of-the-table clash The deficit could have been five-points closer if not for some indifferent results on the road throughout March when they lost to Marumo Gallants and drew against Stellenbosch Their only away win during this period was against Chippa United in Gqeberha A return to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium will nonetheless be a welcome one for the Buccaneers after the venue yielded a handy six points from their two previous visits so far this season They now face off against a Polokwane side on a high of their own after a much-needed 3-1 win at home to Richards Bay over the weekend The result helped them cling on to sixth place in the standings also ending a seven-match winless streak that included defeats in their two previous home outings Having halted a free slide that threatened to derail their hopes for a place in CAF interclub competition next season Rise and Shine will look to ensure that their most recent triumph turns out to be a watershed moment in their campaign They still remain among the most productive teams on home soil despite their recent struggles standing behind only Sundowns and Pirates in terms of points collected in their own backyard this season Three points on Saturday could propel them as high as third place in the standings while significantly altering the shape of the ongoing race for Premiership supremacy Injury has been a factor in both camps over the past few weeks with a few key names still unavailable for Saturday’s fixture The home side’s walking wounded include defender Thabang Matuludi He is joined on the sidelines by forward duo Hlayisi Chauke and Douglas Mapfumo with both players yet to make an appearance in 2025 there have been a couple of recent additions to the injury list Patrick Maswanganyi continues his recovery from a quad strain while Olisa Ndah also remains out due to a stress fracture Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates): The 28-year-old continues to cement his spot amongst the best shot-stoppers in the country and his abilities were on full display in Algeria earlier in the week Chaine has often been the difference in tight games and will again be key in a tricky away fixture Oswin Appollis (Polokwane City): The Bafana winger’s all-action style makes him a testing prospect for any defence and he will be determined to deliver a top performance against the Buccaneers Appollis is a threat in open play through his pace and directness while also on hand to punish the opposition come set piece time the Buccaneers’ boast one of their longest unbeaten runs in the league with only one active Premiership team going longer without beating the Soweto Giants The men from Limpopo last celebrated a win in this fixture in the second half of the 2013/14 season when a lone strike from Sipho Jembula handed them three points at home It has since been one-way traffic in the 15 matches since then with Pirates collecting eight victories while netting 28 goals and conceding 10 The last of these wins was in the reverse fixture at Orlando Stadium when Monnapule Saleng scored the opener in the 58th minute before replacement striker Evidence Makgopa sealed a 3-0 victory with a quickfire brace in the dying moments This means that the visitors have a chance to complete a league double over their hosts a feat that has only eluded them once in their last three attempts The match kicks off at 15:00 and will be televised live on SuperSport PSL You can also follow the action by keeping an eye on live updates posted across Orlando Pirates due to technical issues with the air navigation system. The airport’s CEO, Mokgadi Matli says the problems stem from a recent software update by Air Traffic Control and Management Solution. The software challenge has directly impacted the airport’s ability to provide clear landing visuals in cloudy weather conditions. Matli says the suspension of flights has had a significant impact on both the airport’s business operations and passenger travel plans. “Effective from the 1st of April, the procedures are suspended again. What that means is that on cloudy days, in bad weather and in the evenings, we are not able to land the aircraft the way we are used to and it means some of the flights will be canceled or delayed. Since the 1st of April, we have had challenges due to weather. So, we have missed about six flights since then,” says Matli. Travelers have expressed frustration over the delay and cancellation of flights. One of the affected passengers, Masale Selamatsela says the cancellation has affected his business. “It is impacting negatively on me in terms of the business that I run because you will find that I have business with other people that might have flown from overseas and it becomes difficult, because these people respect the time. And if you are not there on time they simply leave. That is why I am saying it is negatively impacting on me and sometimes I spent money and that money is not budgeted for,” says Selamatsela. Six flights grounded due to technical glitch in Polokwane ActionSA will request the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate potential links between the funders of the Makoro Foundation and companies allegedly benefiting from tender contracts within Polokwane Municipality. Our request seeks to determine whether the foundation’s activities are connected to any wrongdoing in the awarding of municipal contracts. ActionSA’s request focuses on identifying all funders and determining whether they are directly or indirectly linked to businesses awarded tenders by Polokwane Municipality, as well as any connections between the Makoro Foundation and Polokwane Mayor John Mpe. Importantly, we seek to establish whether due process was followed in the procurement process, particularly in cases involving funders of the Makoro Foundation. Our request will further seek an investigation into Iceberg Trading Company, reportedly one of the major sponsors of the Makoro Foundation. This company has secured contracts worth millions for electrical work, road construction, and civil works, raising concerns about: – Iceberg Trading Company’s adherence to proper bidding processes for municipal tenders. – Whether there were any untoward circumstances or undue advantage in the granting of these contracts. – The level of participation of Iceberg Trading Company in projects funded by the Polokwane Municipality. ActionSA’s request is part of a broader commitment to increased transparency, accountability, and ethical governance in Limpopo. We believe that trust within the community is undermined, resources are misappropriated, and development is impeded due to corruption. ActionSA has a zero-tolerance commitment to fighting the pervasive corruption that has particularly crippled local government. Our request to the SIU is aimed at ensuring a thorough investigation, with prosecution and punishment for those found guilty of wrongdoing. The Polokwane municipality continues to receive both praise and criticism following its grade 6 status achievement, which is the highest level of grading of municipalities in the country. While the ANC in the Peter Mokaba region has labelled the development as a significant step towards achieving the goal of becoming a metropolitan municipality, the EFF in Limpopo has stated its intention to oppose the move. Chairperson of the Economic Freedom Fighters in Limpopo, Lawrence Mapoulo says there are no visible factors to support the new grading, citing the poor state of roads in the municipality, shortage of water and alleged fraudulent billing system. ANC regional spokesperson Adolf Rapetsoa says even though challenges of water remain, the municipality has been able to turn around its audit outcomes amongst other things. The Gateway Airport Authority Limited says Polokwane International Airport has been experiencing delays and cancelation of flights due to suspension of instrument flight procedures. This after Air Traffic Navigation Service (ATNS) notified GAAL and other airport authorities nationwide of the temporary suspension of the landing procedures at various airports. GAAL CEO, Mokgadi Matli says there’s been delays in terms of ATNS getting landing procedures approved and as such those procedures have been suspended for Polokwane International Airport and other five airports in other provinces. She says this means the aircrafts that are supposed to land are then disturbed during misty, cloudy and rainy weather conditions and in the evening. Matli says GAAL has vowed to do its best to maintain normal schedule, but warns it is possible that some of the flights may be delayed or in the worst-case scenario be cancelled. The likes of Oswin Appollis and Thato Letshedi were the creators-in-chief for their side as Gallants took a back step in defending their quarters. At the other end of the pitch, Monde Mphambaniso and Daniel Msendami took the direct approach in an attempt to get their side into the game, and saw their shots from range gone begging. While Gallants saw more of the ball midway through the first-half, Polokwane City were left to deal with a number of nervy moments. The chances kept coming for Gallants as the half came to a close, however, the home side were unable to make the most of their opportunities in the final third.  As for Rise and Shine, Mokibelo Ramabu came close to opening the scoring in the 42nd minute after his right-footed effort struck the woodwork. While Gallants ended the first-half on a high, Polokwane City made their intentions known after the restart. Lebohang Nkaki and Sibusiso Tshabalala created two notable scoring chances shortly before the hour-mark, however, Gallants sat tight in warding off Rise and Shine’s pressure. Marumo played under the cosh for much of the second period and battled to progress the ball up field as a result of Polokwane City’s mounting pressure. Polokwane City continued to pile on the pressure as the clock ran down at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium, however, the travelling side struggled to make their chances stick at the attacking end of the pitch. In what was a case of missed attempts for both sides throughout the 90 minutes, the scoreline remained at 0-0 at the end of the match.
