Insider sources have indicated that the Chilli Boys are preparing for Nwabali’s possible move to Kaizer Chiefs or Europe by targeting Kruger United’s 28-year-old shot-stopper Njabulo Cebekhulu
READ: Mayele To Pirates Talks Gathering Pace
"The advantage is that assistant coach Mabhuti Khenyeza knows the goalkeeper as he worked with him at Golden Arrows
So Chippa don't want to be caught off guard when Nwabali leaves at the end of the season
The chances are very high for Nwabali to move to either Kaizer Chiefs or even Europe so Cebekhulu is touted as the right replacement for Chippa United," the Siya source stated
has also attracted interest from another Betway Premiership side
who are believed to be monitoring him as well
"It's believed that both clubs have been monitoring the goalkeeper at Kruger United
that tall goalkeeper who played almost all games last season when they were still in the Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League
Both SuperSport United and Chippa United have been monitoring him and it will depend on what happens at the end of the season but there is healthy interest in him," the second insider revealed

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has described his team as “fighting” and “committed” ahead of a Betway Premiership clash against Chippa United which could bring them ever closer to sealing the Betway Premiership title
The teams will meet at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night
Sundowns have secured successive Premiership wins over Richards Bay and Cape Town City in the past week to move to within touching distance of an eighth successive Premiership title.
In fact, the Brazilians could mathematically clinch the title by late Sunday afternoon, this coming weekend.
Second-placed Orlando Pirates (who will be away to Golden Arrows on Tuesday 6 April) can reach a maximum total of 67 points, while Sundowns already have 61 on the board.
Even assuming a Pirates win over Arrows, victories for the Tshwane team over Chippa on Wednesday and Stellenbosch FC on Sunday would bring their tally to 67.
Add in their vastly superior goal difference (+41 compared to +18 for Pirates) and the title would be all but officially confirmed.
And if the Buccaneers do drop any points in midweek, then Sundowns can potentially start planning a major party for Loftus on Sunday.
But first they will have to overcome Chippa, who find themselves scrapping for a top-half finish and looking to avoid a hat-trick of defeats.
Back-to-back losses against Stellenbosch (0-1) and SuperSport United (0-2) have extended their winless league run to four games, and left them in eighth place on the log – level on points with ninth-placed Kaizer Chiefs and tenth-placed Marumo Gallants, but ranked ahead thanks to a better goal difference.
The Eastern Cape side have also played a game less than those two rivals, but cannot afford an extended spell of bad form if they are to play MTN8 football next season.
Sundowns are set to be without midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who picked up a fourth yellow card of the season this past weekend and will serve a one-game suspension.
They could welcome back Peter Shalulile from a minor injury worry that kept him sidelined for the win over Cape Town City.
Chippa will be without Sirgio Kammies, who was sent off in the loss to SuperSport United and will serve a three-match suspension.
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has praised his team’s effort and energy as they close in on the title:
“What to say? The boys are really fighting for what they want so much. We are very committed with every match. And now it’s time to go for the next one and the next one and try to, well, try to get it. But we need to respect everybody, all the opponents, and the next match [against Chippa United] will be again, a very tough one.”
Chippa United coach Thabo September has admitted that he erred in his tactics and formation against SuperSport:
“We started okay. The balance of play was good and everything that we knew was coming, came. [...] But I think we have to take the blame as coaches and say Plan A didn’t work. [...] And the moments that we got behind we lacked a bit of quality, but the players worked hard and played hard.”
With the strain of a long season across multiple competitions, Sundowns have used their depth to good effect, especially in the case of a player like Tashreeq Matthews.
The 24-year-old midfielder has played more of an influential role as the campaign has gone one, notably scoring the opening goal in the 2-0 away win over Cape Town City this past weekend.
Chippa United will need veteran centre-back Justice Chabalala to use all of his nous and experience to keep things tight at the back against free-scoring Mamelodi Sundowns.
If Chabalala and his fellow defenders can frustrate the hosts, then Chippa will have a shot at an upset result.
In head-to-head stats, Sundowns and Chippa have met in 22 league matches dating back as far as the 2012/13 season.
The Brazilians boast an unbeaten record, with 15 wins and seven draws.
Sundowns have won the last five successive meetings of the clubs, including a 2-0 triumph in a Premiership match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in March, with goals from Teboho Mokoena and Tashreeq Matthews.
2019/20 Chippa 1-1 Sundowns Maphangule; Maboe
2019/20 Sundowns 3-0 Chippa Lukhubeni, Zwane (pen), Vilakazi
2020/21 Chippa 1-2 Sundowns Kwem; Zwane (pen), Shalulile
2021/22 Sundowns 2-0 Chippa Mthethwa og, Mokoena
2022/23 Sundowns 2-1 Chippa Mokoena, Shalulile; Lebitso
2023/24 Chippa 0-2 Sundowns Modiba, Chabalala (og)
2023/24 Sundowns 2-0 Chippa Mokoena, Matthews

SuperSport United defeated Chippa United for the first time in over five years to move out of the relegation zone after a convincing 2-0 victory in the Betway Premiership at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday
Matsatsantsa a Pitori secured their first win in their last seven league games
and their first win under interim head coach Andre Arendse
SuperSport dominated the opening quarter of an hour and were rewarded with the opening goal in the 17th minute
as Lyle Lakay’s cross found Bradley Grobler at the far post
who headed the ball in from close range for his fourth goal in just 10 attempts on target this season
Chippa had the opportunity to draw level in the 25th minute
as Papama Tyongwana’s long ball found Craig Martin
whose cross to Siya Ndlovu was too far behind him
Christian Saile and Lakay broke forward but could not complete the two-on-three break
as Lakay’s cross was deflected and collected easily by Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali
Matsatsantsa took their one-goal lead into halftime
with Chippa being caught offside five times in the half and managing only one shot on target
SuperSport doubled their lead just three minutes into the second half
as Nyiko Mobbie’s ball forward found Christian Saile
who cut onto his left and curled the ball passed Nwabali into the back of the net for his fourth goal
The Chilli Boys nearly pulled one back in the 59th minute
as Giovanni Philander’s free-kick from a tight angle had to be punched over the crossbar by the backpedaling SuperSport goalkeeper Ricardo Goss
Siphesihle Ndlovu could have added another goal for Matsatsantsa in the 65th minute as Lakay’s cross from a set piece found him open in the box
Grobler nearly bagged his second of the game in the 67th minute as Saile’s cross glanced off the head of Makhele
Sirgio Kammies added to Chippa’s woes as he received a red card in the 91st minute for a dangerous tackle
The victory sees SuperSport move above Richards Bay on goal difference into 13th spot on the Betway Premiership log
They will hope to carry the momentum into their upcoming clash against Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium on 17 May
The loss for the Chilli Boys sees them drop to ninth place on the log as they are now winless in their last four away games and their last four league fixtures
They will look to bounce back against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday

Transnet National Ports Authority has reinstated the tanker berth at the Port of Port Elizabeth and expects its next liquid bulk vessel call next week on the 18th of December 2024
TNPA acting port manager David Goliath says the construction works aimed at reinstating the tanker berth commenced in September
following an incident that severely damaged the infrastructure and rendered it non-operational
The appointed contractor’s scope of works entailed salvaging collapsed steel infrastructure
reinstating firefighting and electrical supply and installing lighting infrastructure and a steel walkway
The recommissioning of the berth follows a stakeholder engagement with oil majors to demonstrate operational readiness
Goliath said the resumption of operations will positively impact fuel security supply and pricing for the region
“The collaborative efforts by the terminal operator
the contractor and other critical stakeholders played a meaningful role in the completion of the project,” Goliath said

The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber previously expressed its disappointment that consumers and businesses had to bear the additional cost of higher fuel prices to finance it
said consumers in the metro paid R1.66 more per litre for 95 octane petrol
compared to what they would have paid if the area was still a coastal zone
She says that as far as diesel and paraffin are concerned
the combined additional costs also amounted to R1.66 per litre

The new ship-to-shore crane replaces an older model that was in service for over 35 years
in line with the terminal's equipment renewal strategy
The Port Elizabeth Container Terminal has strengthened its operations by acquiring a new ship-to-shore crane for ZAR240m ($12.7m)
The move is intended to boost the terminal’s ability to handle agricultural and automotive containers and to accommodate larger ships more effectively
The new crane replaces an older model that was in service for over 35 years
in line with the terminal’s equipment renewal strategy
which includes modern technology designed to lower energy use and lessen environmental effects
the crane features advanced cargo-handling capabilities
to facilitate the loading and unloading of containers
The acquisition is part of a larger investment plan by Transnet. In March 2025, Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) introduced 20 straddle carriers and nine rubber-tyred gantries (RTGs) to improve operations at Durban Container Terminal’s Pier 2 and Pier 1
The additions are part of TPT’s ZAR3bn investment strategy to enhance equipment availability and operational efficiency across its container terminals
Transnet chairperson Dr Andile Sangqu said: “The arrival of the ship-to-shore crane represents far more than just a logistical milestone; it symbolises Transnet’s unwavering commitment to efficiency and reliability
Investments in critical equipment are central to Transnet’s drive to overcome operational hurdles
improve efficiency and fulfil its crucial role in South Africa’s logistics ecosystem
“In an operating environment that demands agility
efficiency and precision are non-negotiable
Transnet recognises that reliability and improved responsiveness are the foundation of mutually beneficial long-term partnerships because every minute counts and delays can have profoundly negative consequences
We want to be the force that propels our partners to excel in a sector that expects nothing less.”

While the rest of South Africa celebrated a drop in the petrol price of R1.14
Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape received only a R0.45 drop and Kariega (formerly Uitenhage) only a R0.50 drop
Both towns also only received a fraction of the price drop for liquid paraffin
The petrol price adjustment has hit Kariega and Kirkwood the hardest due to the fuel berth at the Port Elizabeth Harbour being out of service.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads

The CEO of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber
said they are still reviewing all the available information to see how they can oppose this decision
which could have far-reaching implications for the metro
Both businesses and households in the region are under extreme pressure. The economy in the Eastern Cape is in recession and unemployment is well over 40%
Van Huyssteen said they were extremely concerned also because of the impact that the price adjustments had on the price of liquid paraffin
“This results in the area being unfairly subjected to new pricing tariffs where consumers and businesses will pay more for their fuel than what they should normally have been subjected to as part of a coastal region
“The accountability for the additional costs incurred for trucking fuel into the area after a berth at the Port Elizabeth Port was damaged in June
is unfairly being passed on to consumers and businesses in the Nelson Mandela Bay area

“While we understand that this pricing structure is of a temporary nature
and that once the berth is fixed the area will return back to its former allotted zone
this decision will still have a permanent effect and may potentially impact upon future fuel pricing adjustments
“We are currently reviewing the matter and once we have a full understanding of the implications
we will consider the various options to determine our next steps in opposing this harsh and unfair decision,” she said

The National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI) sixth Offshore Rescue Craft (ORC) Rescue 6 has completed her maiden voyage from Cape Town to her home station in Gqeberha’s port of Port Elizabeth and arrived at 15h30 on 25 September 2024
the ORC is designed for high performance in harsh maritime conditions
It is self-righting and purpose-built for rescue operations in extreme conditions
it can be deployed as far as 50 nautical miles from land and has an expected lifespan of at least 40 years
made up of NSRI Training Manager Graeme Harding as delivery coxswain
sailed Rescue 6 from Cape Town to Mossel Bay on September 24th and 25th
After a crew swap and refuelling at Mossel Bay on Tuesday night
she arrived at her new home in Gqeberha’s port of Port Elizabeth late on Wednesday afternoon
“The crew at Station 6 is very excited about the arrival of our new rescue boat
“She is going to make a huge difference to our crew safety and the type of operations that we can safely do.”
“We are still looking for a naming sponsor
we use her call sign Rescue 6 as her name,” said Justin
“She is a huge step up from what we are used to
and we have adjusted our training to safely and effectively crew this extremely advanced rescue vessel,” said Justin
“We will continue with the training program to ensure we are fully operational as soon as possible and ready to put to sea for rescue operations.”
“Our fleet replacement program will see the entire NSRI all-weather search and rescue fleet replaced with the new vessels
allowing for increased operational capability,” said NSRI’s Capital Projects Director Mark Hughes
four of which are entirely South African built
We have another two to build to complete this phase of the fleet replenishment,” said Mark
This world-class search and rescue vessel can carry up to 23 survivors and accommodate six volunteer rescue crew in shock-mitigating seats
allowing for high-speed operation in difficult sea conditions
“Although most rescues are coastal and inshore
an increasing number of our operations require search and rescue vessels with extended range and advanced capability in safety and technology,” said Mark
“As the only maritime rescue service operating in South African waters
we needed to make this investment to ensure all-round safety for crew and those rescued,” he said
“Station 6 Gqeberha appreciates all the effort into building Rescue 6
We especially want to thank NSRI’s Executive Director of Capital Projects
who has driven the ORC project from the start for the NSRI,” added Justin

Transnet National Ports Authority said on Tuesday that the reinstatement of the tanker berth at the Port of Port Elizabeth will occur on the 11th of December
said the three-day delay is as a result of interruptions to project delivery
He said these range from adverse weather conditions that have reduced productivity
delays in the fabrication of components required for the berthing dolphin
and the scarcity of lifting equipment in the region
Goliath said to mitigate project reduced productivity
has increased project working hours and mobilised additional resources including equipment to the site to meet the original completion date of 6 December 2024
the project is still behind schedule by three working days
Goliath said Transnet National Ports Authority was prioritising the completion of this project and continues to provide regular updates on progress to its stakeholders
The Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources
says the Port of Elizabeth repair work is complete
The temporary closure of the port has necessitated interim changes to the fuel pricing zones since October 2024
In June, a tanker damaged the fuel berth
and repair delays caused ships to dock in East London
This caused hauliers to incur additional transport costs for collecting their products there
The Department says it will revert to the original Magisterial District Zones of all the affected fuel pricing zones effective Wednesday
93 octane petrol will increase by 19 cents a litre
while the price of unleaded petrol 95 will rise by 12 cents a litre
Diesel prices will rise by 7.5 cents and 10.5 cents a litre
while illuminating paraffin will decrease by 13 cents a litre at the retail level
Spokesperson Robert Maake says the increase is due to the weaker rand against the US dollar

Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy says the damaged berth at the Port of Port Elizabeth will be fixed latest by the 6th of December
after the minister did an oversight visit of the two ports in Gqeberha
Port of Port Elizabeth and Port of Ngqura as part of Transport Month
Fixing the fuel tanker berth is estimated to cost R20 million
This follows an accident in June when a fuel tanker piloted by a port official damaged a berth
resulting in fuel companies having to collect fuel from East London instead of the Port of Port Elizabeth
The damage will affect Nelson Mandela Bay residents
as fuel costs will be higher compared to other coastal areas
This as a result of its new “inland” zoning approved by Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe
Mantashe has approved the inland zoning of Nelson Mandela Bay fuel costs
Fuel prices increased by 10 cents in the area while the rest of the country experienced a R114 cent drop
The transport industry and other business sectors have raised concerns about the new zoning
“This unilateral and unjust decision does not take into account the fact that Nelson Mandela Bay is in recession and has among the highest unemployment rates in the country
the accountability for the issue has simply been transferred to consumers and businesses who are already reeling from the consequences of the recent massive electricity price increases and other factors affecting the cost of living and the costs associated with operating businesses,” says Denise van Huyssteen
When the petrol increase it affects the fairy activities of the industry
Remember we are not subsidised by the government; we are on our own
We are severely affected by this situation
and we are hoping the government can help us during this situation,” says Mzimkulu Songwiqi
Motorists feel it is unfair to pay the price
“I am not happy that the petrol hasn’t gone down
I only found out when I was at the petrol station
I was so shocked because the whole week I was looking forward to the lowered price but to my surprise
Minister Creecy has also highlighted that the department is working hard at fixing the country’s rail system and has set plans in place to get this mode of transportation moving again
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has approved an interim adjustment of all the affected magisterial district zones in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality
largely due to the “temporary closure of the Port of Port Elizabeth”
said this would come into effect on 2 October when fuel prices are adjusted
including the Liquid Fuel Wholesalers Association of South Africa
approached the Minister for a temporary exemption from price reductions
as fuel had to be trucked in from East London to Nelson Mandela Bay at additional cost
the CEO of the Liquid Fuel Wholesalers Association of South Africa
a fuel tanker being piloted into the harbour during huge swells in June
crashed into a crucial bunker normally used to transfer fuel to tanker trucks for distribution to petrol stations
He told the publication that with the bunker out of commission
liquid fuels wholesalers had to collect petrol and diesel from the East London harbour at extra cost
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources said on Monday that the cost of bringing fuel from East London to Port Elizabeth is included in the price adjustment
"All the costs of taking fuel to those zones have changed now because of the closure of the port there
This is a temporary change until the port is fixed
The adjustment to the road transport tariffs applicable to petrol
diesel and IP price structures will range from a decrease of 0.9 c/l in Zone 9A to an increase of 10.5 c/l in Zone 8B," Maake said
adding that the adjustments are applicable on the old tariffs
According to Transnet it should be fixed within four months or so
and once fixed then we will revert to the old zone," Maake said
Morgan told Algoa FM News on Monday that this was an industry-wide issue and that they were one of several other organisations to approach the Minister
He said it is not an issue of pricing for them
Morgan said the incident in the port of Port Elizabeth the industry needed a solution as the port of Port Elizabeth
he said since the bunker is out of commission
the industry had to incur the additional cost of transporting fuel from East London
"What we have agreed with the government is that because it (the port of PE) is no longer a supply point
and it has to stay in place until Transnet Ports Authority confirms that the port is operational again," Morgan said
He said the issue affects not only Nelson Mandela Bay but other areas as well
saying fuel suppliers in Gqeberha also supply products to the Free State and Northern Cape
“It’s about security of supply,” Morgan stressed
the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources said that the price of all grades of petrol will drop by R1.06 and R1.14 a litre respectively
all grades of diesel will come down by R1.12 and R1.14 cents a litre
and illuminating paraffin will come down by R1.11 c/l
Maake said the average Brent Crude oil price decreased from 78.54 US Dollars (USD) to 72.82 USD per barrel
while the average international petroleum product prices decreased on average
against the US Dollar (from 18.05 to 17.68 Rand per USD) during the period under review
“This led to lower contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices of all products by over 21.00 cents per litre,” he said
Moneyweb reports that this is the lowest fuel price in more than two and a half years
and a sign that the country’s inflation outlook is improving

ANC Chairperson in Nelson Mandela Bay Region, Babalwa Lobishe, has been elected as the new Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
Lobishe replaces Gary van Niekerk of National Alliance who resigned earlier today. His resignation follows a decision by the ANC NEC that the party should lead in all hung councils.
In Nelson Mandela Bay, the ANC is in coalition government with Van Niekerk’s party, National Alliance, EFF, PA, PAC and AIC.
Babalwa Lobishe, who was the Deputy Mayor, has been unanimously elected to lead this metro. Lobishe says top of her priorities will be to stabilise the metro by filling key managerial positions.
“The top priority is for us to look at the areas of audit outcomes, your irregular expenditure, also other issues emanating from the overtime that is too much for the city and also looking generally at how we are going to stabilise the administration. One would recall that we have unoccupied positions of section 57 managers. So, it’s part of the priority,” says Lobishe.
The EFF has welcomed the appointment of the new mayor.
EFF Regional Chairperson, Khanya Ngqisha, says, “We are happy as the EFF. We’ve always been clear that anything that excludes the DA and Freedom Front Plus we’ll form part of. So, this current arrangement with the government excludes the DA and Freedom Front Plus and hence we support it and we are happy with the changes. This arrangement, was by the way, constructed by us as the government of local unity.”
Meanwhile, DA’s Provincial Chairperson Yusuf Cassim says they are concerned about this shifting of chairs, as service delivery is not prioritised but positions are.
“This represents nothing more than a rearrangement of chairs on the Titanic where this municipality continues to sink. Our ward committee counsellors and the ANC’s ward counsellors by the way continue to be blamed for the dysfunction of the municipality because simple service delivery issues cannot be attended to. The electricity outages, across the city most recently. The lack of maintenance of roads and storm water,” says Cassim.
The new mayoral committee of the Metro will be announced on Friday.

Traffic on the busy Cape Road in Gqeberha was brought to a standstill on Tuesday morning as a huge fire engulfed Richly House, a 119-year-old building home to the Champions Bar and Club High.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said seven fire tenders were dispatched to the scene on Cape Road after the fire was first reported at 07:08 AM.
"Following the rapid and effective response, the fire was extinguished by 07:55 AM, preventing any injuries or fatalities," said Metro spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya.
He said the cause of the fire remains under investigation by their fire safety division. He added that a building inspector is scheduled to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the property’s structural integrity to further evaluate the damage's extent and identify potential safety hazards.
"We commend the exceptional dedication and swift response by Nelson Mandela Bay fire fighters, whose prompt action ensured the containment of the blazing fire," he said.
Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said no case was opened with Mount Road SAPS. He said the fire broke out before business hours.
Meanwhile, a person on the scene who did not want to be identified but said he was a shareholder had rushed to the scene after their security company called to inform him that the alarm was going off.
On arrival, he found the building on fire. The man said the building owner was in Georgia.
The man also confirmed that it is not the first time the house caught fire.
DA Ward 5 councillor Terri Stander wrote in a Facebook post that she would call for an investigation by the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority and the Mandela Bay Heritage Trust into the circumstances surrounding the "loss of this heritage icon."
She noted that Richly House on Cape Road was built in 1906 and has been used as a nursing home, brothel, boarding house, and, most recently, a restaurant.
She also wrote that the fire highlights the importance of ensuring the electrical infrastructure in heritage properties is up to code and properly maintained.

On 19 November 2024, the Port Elizabeth Car Terminal marked a major milestone when it handled Vessel Höegh Aurora on its first call to Africa. This advanced cargo-handling vessel, with a capacity of 9 100 vehicles, discharged 1 966 imported vehicles from the Bremerhaven and Santander ports in Germany and Spain, respectively.
“Welcoming Höegh Aurora is a proud moment for our terminal. It demonstrates our ability to manage high-volume shipments efficiently while showcasing our commitment to supporting South Africa’s automotive sector,” said Wandisa Vazi, Managing Executive for Transnet Port Terminals in the Eastern Cape region.
She added that collaborative efforts ensured seamless cargo handling and adherence to safety protocols which were essential for a vessel of this scale. “The terminal demonstrated its readiness through meticulous pre-arrival planning with shipping line representatives and the stevedoring company.”
As a critical hub in South Africa’s automotive logistics chain, the Port Elizabeth Car Terminal had in the last seven months of the 2024/2025 financial year, handled 8% more volumes than budgeted for the same period. The terminal has consistently exceeded operational targets, handling 114 041 fully built units (FBU) against budgeted volumes of 105 596 FBU. This achievement has demonstrated the terminal’s ability to attract global automakers and foster long-term partnerships.
After 16 hours of offloading, Vessel Höegh Aurora departed from Gqeberha to the Durban Car Terminal before returning to Europe.

The DHL Stormers will open their 2024/2025 Investec Champions Cup campaign in Gqeberha on 7 December
at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the Eastern Cape city because their regular home ground of the DHL Stadium in Cape Town is being used for the HSBC Cape Town Sevens that weekend
It is the second time the Stormers will host a game in Gqeberha - they played the Welsh club
there in a Vodacom United Rugby Championship fixture in December 2022
The Stormers won that game comfortably and were spurred on by a sizeable and passionate crowd and Stormers coach John Dobson promised afterwards that the Stormers would be back in the city after his team experienced the rugby appetite of a local fan base that is starved of top rugby
It will be an historic first ever Champions Cup match in Gqeberha - the Southern Kings used to host PRO14 games there before the Stormers played their URC fixture there - and Dobson said his squad is looking forward to taking the Champions Cup to a new frontier
“Our match against the Dragons two years ago was a fantastic experience and we are looking forward to what will be another special occasion at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium,” said Dobson
“We are expecting a vibrant atmosphere at a world class stadium
with the added excitement of bringing Champions Cup rugby to the people of Gqeberha.”
Stormers CEO Johan le Roux is equally as excited about the prospect of seeing the Stormers play in Gqeberha
“Our team is well supported wherever they play and we know the people of the Eastern Cape will turn out in their numbers to experience a Champions Cup match against a renowned Toulon side,” he said
The capacity of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
would obviously make it a better venue than the other regular Stormers alternative venue when the DHL Stadium is booked
Western Province are hosting Sunday’s Carling Currie Cup match against the Airlink Pumas in Stellenbosch
The Stormers have announced that tickets for the Toulon match will go on sale in October and that DHL Stadium season ticket holders will be able to purchase tickets for the game at a 50 per cent discount

As a second-degree black belt and an International Global Studies major with a Global Gender and Sexuality concentration
I am interested in exploring how martial arts have the power to transform lives through empowerment and community-building
that passion carried me over 9,000 miles to Port Elizabeth
where I volunteered with I Protect Me (IPM)
an organization dedicated to preventing domestic violence
violence prevention education and victim support networks
I have begun to consider my post-grad plans
my goal is to work for a non-profit organization focussed on preventing gender-based violence by working with local leaders in vulnerable communities
To my fellow students: Our education is more than a degree
We must look beyond the borders of our campus
recognizing that meaningful change happens through consistent
compassionate engagement with communities working towards equality
IPM encourages resilience in the face of adversity
one of the first friends I made in South Africa
she became the guardian of her three younger brothers
sacrificing her own university dreams to be their caretaker
After enduring an abusive marriage and unimaginable personal loss
where she manages nearly 50 provincial employees and has even started her own event company
Despite meeting inspiring young leaders like Tyronese
at times it was scary to live in Port Elizabeth
five gunmen robbed a nearby elementary school
traumatizing children who were simply trying to learn
I will never forget the night my friends were sending rapid fire texts in our group chat about reuniting at Middlebury for the fall semester while I was hiding in my room because I heard gunshots
I later found out that two people had been murdered a block away
a student who attended the university just down the road from where I worked was raped walking home from school
The dissonance between my friends' updates from Middlebury and my new reality was striking
These incidents and Tyronese's own story were stark reminders of the complex realities facing communities like Port Elizabeth
I often pictured myself as a student there
and I imagine it would be very difficult to focus on studying with constant threats of violence
Middlebury provides a relatively protected environment that largely ensures that our learning goes uninterrupted — I don’t have to be afraid or overly cautious walking to my daily classes
our privilege is not just about our physical safety
but also about the opportunity to critically examine and challenge these underlying structures
I'll never forget the elementary school classrooms where children lined up for hugs
eager to ask if I’d ever been to Starbucks and Target
And when two little girls told me I looked like Sabrina Carpenter
I couldn’t help but giggle along with them
Children and IPM employees alike left classes feeling physically stronger
My primary goals for my time in Port Elizabeth were to learn from IPM and the expertise of its employees and to integrate a sustainable self-defense curriculum into their programs
To support the training I provided in person
I created instructional videos and a self-defense manual that IPM employees can refer to at any time so that they can continue to teach effective self-defense in classrooms
IPM also plans on sending these videos and this manual to similar organizations in other African countries such as Nigeria
This experience was more than volunteer work—it was a profound lesson in community resilience
the importance of grassroots organizations and the ongoing global fight against gender-based violence
I'm committed to continuing this work
inspired by the incredible individuals I met through IPM
My journey underscores the vital message to my fellow students: our education is not confined to campus walls
but a powerful catalyst for global understanding and meaningful change

Developers have focused on markets like Cape Town and Stellenbosch
and while demand in traditional centres is certainly high
there are two towns that offer potential with significant demand for quality student accommodation: Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth) and George
Both are experiencing rapid student population growth
creating a pressing need for adequate student housing solutions
There are a number of institutions offering higher learning opportunities in Gqeberha
Nelson Mandela University (NMU) has seen a notable increase in student numbers
This growth is a reflection of the university’s expanding academic offerings and its reputation as a leading institution in the Eastern Cape
NMU’s focus on creating a supportive and resource-rich environment for students
including establishing new transport systems and catering services
highlights the university’s proactive approach to managing this growth
These efforts ensure that students have access to essential services
thereby enhancing their overall university experience
The broader implications of these developments indicate a sustained increase in student numbers at NMU
which presents significant opportunities for investors in the student housing market in Gqeberha
few know that NMU has a satellite campus in George
situated at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains in the Southern Cape
This campus focuses on providing education that supports the green economy and sustainable development
It offers a range of programmes primarily in the fields of natural resource management
nature conservation and game-reserve management
And George is on the brink of significant educational expansion
which will further drive demand for student housing
Plans are underway to establish a new university in the town
enhancing George's position as an educational hub
George College is planning to expand its campus to accommodate more students and offer a wider range of programs
These expansions will attract more students to the town
increasing the demand for student accommodation and presenting lucrative opportunities for investors
“The student housing market in Gqeberha and George presents a compelling opportunity,” Mark Connett of Just Property Port Elizabeth Commercial says
“There have been significant changes in recent years
policy adjustments and the ever-increasing student population.”
According to a report by Nelson Mandela University (NMU)
the shortage of on-campus housing has forced many students to seek off-campus accommodation
which often lacks proper regulation and security
Many private landlords took advantage of the high demand
charging exorbitant rents for poorly maintained properties
This has led to significant dissatisfaction among students
who have raised concerns about their safety and the affordability of such accommodations
The rapid increase in student numbers has exacerbated these issues
local governments and educational institutions have implemented policies aimed at improving the student housing situation
the municipality has adopted a comprehensive student accommodation policy that outlines standards for safety
affordability and quality of housing with the aim of regulating off-campus accommodation to ensure that students have access to decent living conditions
The Western Cape Government has conducted extensive studies on the housing market in George to identify gaps and opportunities
These studies have informed policy decisions
investment strategies and zoning regulations aimed at boosting the supply of quality student housing
Local government has integrated student-housing considerations into its broader urban-development plans
and well-maintained housing options that meet the specific needs of students and encourage the development of purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) to address the growing demand
The changes in policies and the persistent demand for student housing present lucrative opportunities for investors in Gqeberha and George:
Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA): With new policies supporting such developments
investors can benefit from constructing dedicated student-housing complexes that meet regulatory standards and cater specifically to students' needs
These properties can offer amenities such as study areas
making them attractive to students and their families
Public-private partnerships: There is also potential for public-private partnerships (PPPs) in the student-housing sector
Local governments and even educational institutions are increasingly open to collaborating with private investors to address the housing shortage
Such collaborations may even come with incentives that ensure long-term profitability
Renovation and upgrading of existing properties: Of course
the opportunity exists in renovating and upgrading existing properties to meet the new standards set by local policies
Many off-campus accommodations require significant improvements to comply with safety and quality regulations
By investing in the refurbishment of these properties
there is potential to enhance their value and appeal to the student market
Expansion into emerging markets: While Gqeberha and George are the primary focus of this article
there are emerging markets within the broader region that also present opportunities
Smaller towns and cities with growing educational institutions are experiencing similar housing shortages
Investors can tap into these markets early
establishing a presence and benefiting from the rising demand for student accommodations
Sustainable and green-housing solutions: With an increasing emphasis on sustainability
as educational institutions fill with GenZ
there is a growing market for eco-friendly student housing
Investors can differentiate their offerings by incorporating green building practices and energy-efficient designs
Such initiatives not only align with global sustainability trends but also appeal to environmentally conscious students and institutions
Technology integration: Integrating technology into student housing can significantly enhance the living experience and attract tech-savvy students
can set properties apart from traditional accommodations
Investors who embrace technological advancements can create innovative living spaces that cater to the modern student's lifestyle
The student housing market in Gqeberha and George is ripe with opportunities for investors
“Savvy investors willing to venture beyond the more crowded property landscapes of traditional educational strongholds are likely to be well rewarded,” concludes Connett

The South African Airways (SAA) has lamented the SAA Pilots’ Association and the National Transport Movement’s decision to commence “work to rule” industrial action
SAA says it had recently provided the pilots with what it terms a “comprehensive and favourable” final salary offer
indicated in a statement that SAA had implemented strong contingency measures to minimize the impact of the industrial action
adding that their focus was to ensure an uninterrupted service to their customers
SAA pilots are said to have rejected an average 7,2% salary increase tabled by SAA in December last year
