“Trailer park homes” in the Northern Cape town of Postmasburg
apparently declared unsafe over 10 years ago
raised the ire of a local councillor who wants the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) to “attend to derelict military accommodation”
Postmasburg is part of Tsantsabane Local Municipality which includes the SA Army Combat Training Centre (CTC) at Lohathla 34 km away
the annual SA Army capability and readiness exercise Vuk’uhlome
which sees an influx of troops supported by maintenance
Personnel from these units are housed both at CTC and in houses and “temporary park homes” declared uninhabitable over a decade ago in Postmasburg
His unhappiness over the accommodation in the town’s Postdene suburb saw an oversight visit earlier this month confirm the temporary accommodation was still in place
Boucher maintains it is the SANDF’s duty to remove the trailer park homes and provide alternate accommodation for its personnel
This was given further weight by way of a Parliamentary question as far back as last October
Questioner Carl Niehaus (Economic Freedom Fighters) wanted to know from Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga whether an inquest docket was opened following two deaths in the temporary military Postdene accommodation in May last year
The first fire destroyed an unoccupied park home while the second claimed the lives of the wife and daughter of a sergeant
Boucher maintains the national defence force has “done nothing to maintain and secure its rundown brick homes which are still accommodating people”
The empty brick homes are being vandalised and stripped
ceilings missing and cupboards and taps stripped
are too scared to leave their homes “for fear of them being emptied out by vagrants and drug users
The fencing around the property is broken and the entrance gate hangs from a hinge,” Boucher added
Additionally he puts blame for non-maintenance of “empty erfs the SANDF leases from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI)” on the SANDF “tacitly relinquishing responsibility,” creating an eyesore
The matter has been referred to Ofentse Mokae
DA Member of the Select Committee on Security and Justice
to take up with the Minister of Defence during the next question and answer session
The SANDF must reclaim its properties and its place as the pride of Postmasburg
The Department of Defence (DoD) Works Formation
with units in each of South Africa’s nine provinces
is tasked with upkeep of building and facility maintenance where the SANDF is the occupant
The formation has its roots in an SA Army Works Regiment established by former landward force chief Solly Shoke
later to become SANDF Chief in the wake of DPWI not providing satisfactory maintenance to buildings and facilities used by the air force

A LARGE-scale police operation targeting drug dealing in Postmasburg has led to the conviction of a 33-year-old Congolese national, Leki Martin, who was sentenced in the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court this week.
Martin’s arrest was the result of Operation Didiba, a joint effort by the Northern Cape SAPS Provincial Organised Crime Investigations unit, SAPS Crime Intelligence, the Kuruman Public Order Policing unit, and the SAPS Local Criminal Record Centre.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock revealed that officers executed an undercover entrapment operation, where an agent successfully purchased drugs from Martin at his residence in Newtown, Postmasburg. The operation culminated in his arrest on February 26, 2024.
The police opposed bail, ensuring that Martin remained behind bars until his sentencing. He was found guilty of dealing in drugs and was sentenced to either a R30,000 fine or three years in prison on February 12, 2025.
The SAPS Northern Cape management lauded the efforts of the units involved in the operation and also emphasised the importance of community co-operation in the fight against crime.
“The police need the community, and the community needs the police,” Lieutenant-Colonel Kock stated, urging residents to continue reporting criminal activity via the MySAPS app or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
Giancarlo and Santiné van der Merwe, two siblings from Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, have achieved extraordinary success at the prestigious 2023 Genius Olympiad in the United States of America. Their projects earned them silver medals and renewable scholarships worth $20,000 each to the renowned Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in the United States.
MP – Constituency Head of Idwala27 Nov 2024 in Press StatementsThe Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Northern Cape has called on the provincial health department to develop a turnaround plan for the Postmasburg hospital after an oversight inspection revealed serious service delivery failures
The oversight was prompted by a delay in the transfer of a learner who had been stabbed
to the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital in Kimberley
the DA also conducted oversight at the hospital after a patient was found lying on a dirty floor
The hospital continues to epitomize the critical lack of care in the provincial health sector and remains in urgent need of reform
despite previous concerns raised with the department
It doesn’t have any surgeons or theatre nurses and requires two surgeons and four theatre nurses to operationalise its theatre
Patients are therefore referred to Kimberley
aggravating the growing surgery backlog in the province
The hospital also only has two midwives as opposed to six
to oversee between 10 and 12 maternity patients on any given day
The single midwife must also assist in the TB ward and the casualty section
she has to leave her patients in the care of a nursing assistant
This significantly compromises patient care she can provide to patients and presents cross-ward infection and places immense strain on the midwives
Only one machine is working in the laundry room
while the dryer has been out of order for seven months
Linen must either be sent to Kuruman or dried in the sun
which presents a further infection control risk for sterile linen and gowns
Aging infrastructure is also not maintained and sewage spills on the premises pose further health and safety risks to patients and staff
The challenges experienced at Postmasburg hospital are not isolated
like implementing the poorly planned National Health Insurance
The DA has submitted our findings to Health MEC
We have also urged him to develop a step-by-step turn-around plan
to be able to transform service delivery at Postmasburg hospital
and the many other health facilities like it

THE UPINGTON Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit is on the hunt for suspects linked to two separate carjacking and armed robbery cases that took place in the Postmasburg area in recent months.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Masegela, the incidents occurred in November and December 2024, with the victims allegedly being held at gunpoint and robbed of their valuables, including bank cards that were later used to withdraw cash at local ATMs.
Following intensive investigations, the police have obtained surveillance footage of the suspects and are now appealing to the public for assistance in identifying them.
Sergeant Masegela urged community members to assist with any information that could lead to the arrest of these individuals. However, members of the public should not approach them, as they could be dangerous, he cautioned.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Christoffel Van Zyl, at 076 016 4252 or submit an anonymous tip via the MySAPS app.
“All information will be treated confidentially,” Sergeant Masegela assured.

A 37-YEAR-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was convicted of raping his girlfriend’s 13-year-old sister, who had been left in his care in Postdene, Postmasburg.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the incident occurred on September 18, 2022, when the victim’s sister left home to visit their mother in hospital.
"Instead of looking after her, he rather took advantage of the situation and he sexually assaulted and raped the girl at about 7.30pm. Upon her return from the hospital, the sister found the child extremely upset," said Shemane.
A case of rape was opened the same night after the victim reported the assault. The accused was arrested the following day, on September 19, 2022.
Shemane said the accused was found guilty and sentenced in the Postmasburg Regional Court. He received 20 years’ imprisonment and an additional life sentence for rape. The sentences will run concurrently.
"The accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered into the National Register of Sexual Offenders. He was also declared unfit to work with children," he added.
The Northern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the sentence and applauded the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Gaolatlhe David Mongake attached to the Postmasburg SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit, for the thorough investigation that led to the conviction - ensuring that the accused is permanently removed from society.

RRM contract ripe with economic opportunities for Tsantsabane and Kgatelopele Municipalities
Caption: SMMEs attended SANRAL’s information session in Postmasburg to understand the project participation opportunities.
Northern Cape, 15 September 2024 – The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has this week introduced the contractor on the R128-million Routine Road Maintenance (RRM) contract that spans the Tsantsabane and Kgatelopele Local Municipalities in the ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, to its stakeholders at information sessions in Postmasburg and Danielskuil.
The five-year project, which covers 177km, includes maintenance on the R31 from Kgatelopele/Ga-Segonyana border to Kgtatelopele/Dikgatlong border, the R385 from Danielskuil intersection to Postmasburg and the R325 from Postmasburg to the N14/R325 intersection.
Speaking to small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in Postmasburg, SANRAL Transformation Officer for the Western Region, Morné Windvogel, introduced Ndoko Projects (Pty) Ltd, the main contractor who started this project on 1 September 2024.
“Ndoko Projects was once a subcontractor, just like many of you but today they are the main contractor on this maintenance contract. So, when we say that SANRAL is committed to enterprise development, supporting, mentoring and growing small contractors to become big contractors, it is not just talk,” said Windvogel.
SANRAL Project Manager, Martin Maswanganyi explained that the project is currently in the mobilisation period, which spans six months. During this time, the main contractor will, among others, establish the site office, determine the extent of the work and the related requirements, do a skills audit of the target area, compile the contract participation goals (CPG) plan and advertise work packages for subcontracting.
Elizabeth Tshazibana from Umhlobo General Traders and Hillie Lekhula-Olyn from Hillarious Trading (Pty) Ltd agreed that working on this project would give them the opportunity to” show their worth and make their mark”.
“This is exactly the break we need to prove ourselves,” they said.
Members of the Project Liaison Committee (PLC) were also introduced and given the opportunity to address the community on their commitment to ensuring fair and transparent processes for the appointment of subcontractors and local labour.
“Over and above having oversight of the processes, our work entails taking this information to all the relevant wards so that nobody misses out on potential opportunities. We will also make it very clear that there is no place for nepotism and favouritism. Knowing a member of the PLC will not guarantee you a job on this project,” said PLC member Simozana Mdala.
Luphelo Ngalo, SANRAL Stakeholder Coordinator for the Western Region, explained that a labour database as well as a database of targeted enterprises will be compiled under the careful oversight of the PLC.
“If you’re worried that we’ll simply take the existing databases, let me assure you that we will not. This project will have its own database, created from scratch,” he said.
SANRAL will continue using its procurement power to roll out more projects into the market, not only to improve infrastructure development but to use those infrastructure projects to unlock economic benefit at scale.
POSTMASBURG – In a heartbreaking incident that has left the local community in shock, four members of a family, including a six-year-old child, lost their lives after a bakkie collided with a goods train near Postmasburg on Sunday afternoon.
The tragedy unfolded around 15:00 on August 4, 2024, at a railway crossing close to the Groenwater area. The family was using the tracks as a shortcut to a nearby village when their bakkie stalled on the tracks as the train approached.
According to police reports, the bakkie was carrying 12 passengers at the time of the incident. In a desperate attempt to save themselves and their loved ones, several adults jumped out of the vehicle to push it off the tracks.
Despite their efforts, they were unable to move the bakkie in time, and the incoming train struck the vehicle with devastating force.
Colonel Cherelle Ehlers, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), confirmed the incident and provided further details. “It is believed that the bakkie was crossing the railway tracks when it collided with an incoming train. Some of the adults tried to push the vehicle off the tracks, but sadly, four people inside the bakkie, including a young child, did not survive the impact,” said Colonel Ehlers.
The victims have been identified as two women, one man who was driving the bakkie, and a six-year-old boy. The names of the deceased have not yet been released as the police are still notifying their next of kin.
In addition to the four fatalities, three other occupants of the bakkie sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. The extent of their injuries has not been fully disclosed, but they are reportedly in stable condition.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with using unauthorized crossings and the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations near railway tracks. Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid taking risks that could endanger lives.
The Postmasburg community is now in mourning as they come to terms with the loss of four of their own. The SAPS in Postmasburg are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, and further details will be released as they become available.
Local leaders and community members have expressed their condolences to the grieving family and have called for increased awareness of railway safety to prevent future tragedies of this nature.

The 100 MW Redstone Concentrated Solar Thermal Power (CSP) Project is not only the first CSP project in sub-Saharan Africa
but also one of the largest renewable energy investment projects in South Africa
3 (Xinhua) -- Upon arriving at Postmasburg
a town in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa
one may be pretty amazed by a towering structure that heaves into view
Enveloping this nearly 100-story-high tower are thousands of large rectangular mirrors
strategically positioned to capture the sun's rays and redirect them towards the pinnacle of the tower
these mirrors resemble a colossal sunflower
symbolically blossoming on the soil of the vibrant "Rainbow Nation."
This is the 100 MW Redstone Concentrated Solar Thermal Power (CSP) Project being built by SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Corporation
It is not only the first CSP project in sub-Saharan Africa
are designed to accurately follow the sun's trajectory and redirect sunlight towards a designated focal point
such as the central receiver atop the tower
the 248-meter-high tower will be surrounded by over 40,000 heliostats arranged in concentric circles," he told Xinhua
it is projected to generate approximately 480 GWh of electricity annually for the national grid
This substantial output will effectively cater to the power requirements of over 200,000 South African households
extends beyond addressing the country's power deficit
It will also play a crucial role in expediting South Africa's transition towards renewable energy sources
project manager of its South African partner
highlighted the project's contribution to local employment
with over 2,500 jobs created in South Africa and 650 of the jobs taken by employees from the local community
fostering economic growth within the region
On top of that more than 400 local engineers and technicians have received training
thereby enhancing the overall skill of the local workforce through knowledge and expertise sharing
In 2021 when the Redstone project was launched
Gloria Kgoronyane founded a local cleaning company with just two employees
Since being subcontracted by SEPCOIII to provide cleaning services for the project
her company employs a team of 18 individuals
indicating her business expansion and increased demand for their services
Kgoronyane is thankful for the opportunities offered by the Redstone project
she has a firm that has created employment opportunities for people in the community
who started as a grassroots employee and has been working for the Redstone project for over three years
providing opportunities for career advancement
she appreciates how the project has allowed her to contribute to her community by creating employment opportunities and facilitating professional development for others
"It also assisted me to further my studies and take part in seminars and workshops that are required by my professional board
I will be on a much higher level than I was when I entered," said Xengana

The Kolomela mine is located 22km from Postmasburg in the Northern Cape province of South Africa
The mine produces direct shipping iron ore
and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) shareholders (26.1%)
The mine is operated by the Anglo American group company Kumba Iron Ore through its subsidiary Sishen Iron Ore Company (SIOC)
SIOC is 76.3% owned by Kumba while the remaining interest is held by Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) shareholders
Anglo American holds a 64.7% stake in Kumba
Industrial Development Corporation holds 14% and the remaining is free float
It started commercial production in December 2011 and was awarded ISO 14001 certification in July 2013
Kolomela’s life is estimated to be 14 years
Formerly known as the Sishen South project, the Kolomela mine project is a direct shipping iron ore project completed in late 2011. The project surpassed the expected full-scale production capacity of nine million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) in 2013
The first impact studies of the project were carried out in 2001
although the exploration works for the project were undertaken in the 1950s
The construction works of the R8.46bn ($933m) project started in mid-2008 and were completed by July 2011
A revised mining plan was implemented in 2016
which included the cessation of mining at one of the pits
This resulted in a 4% increase in production and an increase in waste mining to 45.7Mt
Production at the mine increased by 9% following the implementation of the company’s Operating Model in 2017
The model follows a phased implementation beginning at the project set-up phase and terminating with the stabilisation and sustaining phases
The mine was granted approval for an application to expand its current mining operations within the adjacent Heuningkranz area in 2018
An infrastructure upgrade was undertaken at the mine’s dense media separation (DMS) plant in 2019
along with a drill performance improvement project
The Kolomela mine comprises three separate ore bodies located on the southern tilt of the iron bearing belt that hosts the Sishen deposit towards the north
The lithologies are identified to be of Griqualand West Supergroup
The ore bodies delineate the western margin of the Kaapvaal Craton in the Northern Cape province
The ore bodies measure up to 2km in length
The deposit consists of four varieties of high-grade haematite ores
collapse breccia (10%) and conglomeratic (8%)
The lump to fine ratio of the ore is 60:40
The estimated ore reserves stood at 159.3Mt grading 63.7% Fe as of 31 December 2019
The reserves comprise 103.9Mt of proved reserves grading 63.5% Fe and 55.4Mt of probable reserves grading 64% Fe
Production declined by 5% in 2019 to 13.2Mt
The mine employs the conventional open-pit mining method involving drilling
The extracted ore from the mine is sent to the nearby processing plant
secondary and tertiary crushing at the plant
The crushed ore is scalped and screened before being sent to the stockyard
The mine has a stacker-reclaiming facility
at which different grades of processed ore are blended to ensure the grade requirements of the clients
Sishen mine’s products are also blended with the mine’s products before the final shipment of the ore
The export ore is sent via a conveyor to the load-out terminal of the mine
it is transported via the newly constructed 36km rail line linking the Sishen-Saldanha export line connected to the Saldanha Bay Port
A fatigue centre designed to provide facilities for fatigue breaks was completed at the mine in 2013
It is expected to reduce fatigue and workplace incidents
Hatch was awarded the R2.5bn ($276m) engineering
project and construction management (EPCM) contract for the project
The company was responsible for delivering the crushing and sizing plant
Murray & Roberts Construction unit Concor Roads & Earthworks carried out the earthworks
as well the construction of a new railway line connecting the iron ore mine with the Sishen-Saldanha export line
It also received several other contracts in 2012 for additional construction works of the project
The drilling contract for the mine was awarded to Master Drilling
