Competing at the iconic McArthur Stadium, the same venue which saw him qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics almost five years back, Neeraj Chopra beat local athletes Douw Smit and Duncan Robertson to the top podium.
Smit, with a best mark of 82.44m on the day, and Neeraj were the only two in a six-man field who managed to beat the 80m-mark in the men’s javelin throw competition at the Potch Invitational Meet 2025.

Neeraj is also listed to compete at this year's Doha Diamond League on May 16

He will also headline a World Athletics Continental Tour javelin throw event in India in May
three-time Olympic and world champion Jan Zelezny of Czechia
The South African meet was the Indian ace’s first event under the javelin legend
It was also Neeraj’s first outing since finishing second at the 2024 Diamond League Final last September
The 2025 athletics season will be an important one for Neeraj
who will be looking to defend his World Championships gold medal at the upcoming edition set to take place at Tokyo’s National Stadium this year
Neeraj Chopra had won his historic Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 at the same venue four years ago
Nadeem, who had to settle for a silver medal at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, will also be out to dethrone Neeraj of his world title in Tokyo this year.
JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s best track and field athletes have gathered in Potchefstroom this week for the ASA Senior Championships.
The event will be hosted at the MWU McArthur Athletics Stadium from 24-26 April.

Joining them in Potchefstroom will be Abduraghmaan Karriem, Tsebo Matsoso and Retshidisitswe Mlenga, and local favourites Benjamin Richardson.
Viwe Jingqi will be defending her 100m national title against 17-year-old Hannah Hope Vermaak, who beat Jingqi at the recent Golden Grand Prix in Botswana, where both athletes clocked 11.44 seconds.
Olympian Prudence Sekgodiso will also headline the championships after winning the women's 800m world indoor title earlier this season.
But she will have to fight it out with Charne Swart, who won the 2024 national two-lap title.
In the field events, Olympic shot-put finalist Kyle Blignaut, who landed the shot at 20.32m at the Golden Grand Prix in Botswana two weeks ago, will be competing. As well as former World Athletics U20 Championships high jump medallist Brian Raats, who cleared 2.21m at an indoor meeting in Slovakia in February.

Potchefstroom, South Africa (22 January 2025) – The learners of Potchefstroom Gimnasium showcased the most touching display of humility and service as it welcomed its newest schoolmates
Instead of the typical awkward initiation rituals
this high school embraced a unique tradition where older learners humbly washed the feet of the younger ones
they performed this act of service to conclude the “Becoming-a-Gimmie” orientation weekend and officially welcome the Grade 8s into the school community
Just as the Bible describes how Jesus washed his disciples’ feet out of honour and humility
so too did the older students follow that example to show the Grade 8s that they care about them and want to serve them
This was also a message to the Grade 8s to always remain humble
An emotional video shared on Facebook by the school shows the learners humbly demonstrating the feet-washing ceremony and fervently praying over the Grade 8s
a moment that has deeply moved us and many other South Africans online
responding with heartfelt messages on the post
To see children showcase so much care and humility towards one another in a world that is largely fixated on self-interest
affirms that there is still so much goodness

Graduates from Potchefstroom Agricultural College in Potchefstroom
North West are poised to lead South Africa’s agricultural sector with innovative solutions and a commitment to sustainable farming practices
Potchefstroom Agricultural College in North West celebrated the graduation of a new generation of agricultural professionals
ready to make their mark on South Africa’s farming landscape
highlighted the critical role young graduates will play in ensuring food security
attended the ceremony and praised the enthusiasm and determination of the graduates
“These young professionals are stepping into a sector that is not just about producing food
A key highlight of the event was an inspiring address by Andy Mabe
chairperson of the College Advisory Council
who encouraged graduates to embrace challenges with a fearless attitude
“Fear can either mean ‘forget everything and run’ or ‘face everything and rise’,” she told them
urging them to take the latter path and shape the future of South African agriculture with courage and vision
Adding a touch of humour to the celebration
the executive mayor of JB Marks Local Municipality
“It’s not every day you see farmers in high heels and dresses!”
The graduation ceremony served as a reminder of the vital role young professionals play in advancing agriculture, ensuring food security, and adapting to the evolving challenges of the sector, remarked AgriSETA chief executive Dr Innocent Sirovha
and a commitment to making a lasting impact,” he said
“With determination and innovation at the forefront
these graduates are set to drive South Africa’s agricultural sector into a promising future.”
Sirvoha delved into the critical role of quality agricultural education.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy
yet it is often underestimated in terms of its educational value,” he explained
“We often focus on what farmers need in terms of resources and technology
Quality agricultural education is what empowers farmers to adapt to new challenges
we risk perpetuating outdated practices that don’t align with modern needs.”
Sirovha furthermore noted the need for agricultural education to be comprehensive
“It’s not just about teaching farming techniques
It’s about understanding the broader agricultural system – soil health
When we equip our future farmers with this knowledge
we provide them with the tools they need to thrive in a world that’s constantly evolving.”

St Andrew’s reversed an earlier loss to Potchefstroom Gimnasium
winning comfortably by 41 runs on the back of a fine batting performance by Andrew Sobiech
who has been a prominent figure for his side right through the weekend
contributing a well-constructed 68 runs from 61 balls
Leon Athanasiou provided the needed support with an important 35 runs
which lifted St Andrew’s beyond 140 – a total that has proved hard to chase in Potchefstroom – and on to 148/4 from their 20 overs
FG Botha continued the Bloemfontein side’s dominance
spinning a web around the local batsmen to snare 3/15 from his four overs
Athanasiou was in the thick of things again
as Potch Gimnasium mustered only 107 all out in reply
the main contributor in his side’s seven-wicket victory over the Northern Cape’s Kalahari
De Wet was devastating with the ball on this occasion and dismantled the Kalahari batting lineup
only Strauss van Heerden (16) and Liam Laing (11) made it into double figures
which left the Northern Cape side well short
Grey College needed only one of their batsmen to settle at the crease and Edrich Hanekom (20) did the job
His innings put Grey in a position to chase down the Kalahari’s total in 8.2 overs
Grey College will head into the final favoured to reverse their previous defeat to St Andrew’s

while former South African U19 captain Bryce Parsons added a brilliant 118 before being bowled by Dian Forrester
and seamer Daryn Dupavillon contributed a handy 41
Aaron Phangiso was the most effective among the Knights’ bowlers
Malusi Siboto with 2/58 in 19 overs and Dian Forrester 2/75 in 14 overs also made valuable contributions with the ball
Jacques Snyman and in-form Lesego Senokwane opened with a gritty 137-run partnership in 30.4 overs
Snyman was unfortunate to be run out by Prenelan Subrayen after a fluent 81 off 96 balls
an innings that featured 12 fours and a six
The Knights lost wicketkeeper Gihahn Cloete for six
Patrick Botha will join Senokwane at the crease when play resumes at 10:00 on Saturday
