The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that a grade eight learner stabbed an educator at Hoërskool Die Burger
The police and parents were informed and the learner has been apprehended
Department Spokesperson Steve Mabona says the educator received immediate medical attention and was rushed to the hospital for further treatment
“Subsequently a police case has been opened by an educator and as such circumstances surrounding this incident will then be investigated by the police while we also focus on the departmental one
as it is known that the SGB has a responsibility of making sure that there is discipline at the school
so they will also conduct their own investigation and take necessary steps accordingly.”
Minibus taxis traditionally dominate the bustling heart of Randburg's Central Business District
engaging in animated conversation as they await their next load of passengers
Amid the cacophony of honking horns and boisterous driver calls
commuters and pedestrians alike must navigate the disordered milieu
manoeuvring past vehicles that ebb and flow in constant motion
The City of Johannesburg's Transport Department has transformed an abandoned site adjacent to the Randburg taxi rank into a designated taxi holding facility
The plan envisions a structured area where taxis can queue methodically
eliminating the need for haphazard street parking that has congested Randburg's thoroughfares
This facility is anticipated to streamline traffic
enhancing ease of movement for both residents and visitors
while also benefiting local commerce through improved access and reduced gridlock
Previously under the custodianship of the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC)
the land had devolved into a derelict refuge for recyclers and pests
This neglect turned the area into a public health hazard
creating a rodent infestation and jeopardising the safety of residents and commuters
Recognising the urgent need for revitalisation
the Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) department spearheaded a multidisciplinary initiative to reclaim and rehabilitate the site
After extensive dialogue between the City's Transport Department and the JPC
the green light was given to repurpose this land for the taxi holding facility
the City's Transport Department orchestrated a comprehensive three-day operation
enlisting a coalition of stakeholders including Pikitup
the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD)
the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD)
and Randburg's South African Police Service (SAPS)
all meticulously preparing the grounds for the handover
The highly anticipated ceremonial handover took place recently
He was joined by officials from the Executive Mayor's Office and SANTACO's Deputy Chairperson
Regional Director Sello Lemao welcomed the assembly and acknowledged the concerted efforts that had culminated in this historic occasion
Lemao emphasised the significance of the new holding facility in diminishing criminal activity that had previously plagued the site.“We are elated to affirm that this land is now secured and under the taxi industry's stewardship
a decisive step towards curbing the criminal behaviour that had once taken root here," said Colonel Mudau of Randburg SAPS.Representing the taxi industry
“We are profoundly honoured to assume responsibility for this space
Our impeccable record in maintaining taxi ranks to the highest standards of cleanliness and order speaks for itself".In his keynote
Cllr Kunene commended the collaborative efforts that brought the initiative to fruition
acknowledging the industry's commendable history of upkeep across taxi ranks
which experience minimal crime under their watchful management
The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony
symbolising the official handover of the land to the Northern Taxi Liaison Committee
punctuated by a dynamic procession of taxis and patrol vehicles from affiliated associations.Accompanied by the Regional delegation
the MMC was given a tour of the newly instituted facility by the Northern Taxi Liaison Committee

The current conditions that the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and Licensing Department are enduring at the Randburg Civic Centre are utterly deplorable
What was once a functional council chamber and radio room for the city in Region B has now deteriorated into one of the worst council-owned buildings we have seen during our oversight visits across the regions
The top two floors of the building have been completely stripped of essential infrastructure – cables
Water leaks persist due to the theft of taps and other fittings
and unchecked tree growth from the outside is creeping into office spaces
The former council chamber has been stripped down
The kitchen that once provided meals for councillors is in complete disrepair
further exacerbating the extensive water damage visible throughout the premises
thousands of licensing documents are stored in what has become a health and safety hazard
This section of the building was flooded and had to be bolted shut due to the risks it poses
the finance side of the building was gutted by fire two years ago
forcing employees who previously worked in designated payment booths into overcrowded offices
This has resulted in long queues and frustrating delays for residents
while large portions of the building remain vacant and could easily be repurposed with proper upgrades
The safety concerns in this building are alarming
leaving only two small entry points available
the likelihood of people escaping on time is extremely slim
This is an unacceptable situation for the very officers and staff who are expected to deliver a “world-class service.” Staff have even taken to calling the building “HELL,” a sentiment that speaks volumes about the ongoing neglect they face daily
This crisis is yet another glaring example of the Johannesburg Property Company’s (JPC) failure to maintain city-owned buildings
JPC has become the City of Johannesburg’s biggest slumlord
The conditions at the Randburg Civic Centre are not reflective of a
“World Class African City,” but rather an example of extreme neglect and mismanagement
Instead of paying exorbitant rents for departments displaced from the Metro Centre
funds should be reinvested into the buildings the City already owns
It is deeply concerning that the Metro Centre was shut down for conditions far less severe than those currently experienced at the Randburg Civic Centre
We will be demanding urgent answers from the CEO of JPC on what immediate and longterm plans are in place to remedy these issues
not only at this site but at all regional offices under their control
The City of Johannesburg cannot continue to allow its critical service departments to operate in these inhumane conditions
and efficiency to the Randburg Civic Centre and all city-owned buildings

the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over Gauteng

flooding a popular pedestrian bridge to Delta Park in Randburg
causing significant damage to the structure and barriers
— SA Weather Service (@SAWeatherServic) March 26, 2025
a pedestrian crossing over the Braamfontein Spruit in Delta Park
has been rendered unsafe following two major storms – first on 5 March and then last week on Wednesday
originally built in 2006 to provide safe passage for domestic workers
now serves thousands of residents weekly for recreation and commuting
heavy flooding has caused the central joint to dip by about 15 cm
which connects Craighall Park to Delta Park
was damaged after heavy storms caused flooding
The Johannesburg Roads Agency attempted to close the bridge
but residents and commuters removed the barriers and continue to use it
Ward councillor Martin Williams confirmed that the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) declared the bridge unsafe after his inspection on 6 March. He said that the bridge had initially been requested by Parkhurst and Craighall councillors as a safe crossing for domestic workers.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
This was particularly important after a tragic incident in 2004
where a domestic worker drowned while attempting to cross the river with her children
“A lot of people would have been washed away if they’d been anywhere near that bridge the other night,” said Williams
A sign was put up at the entrance to the bridge to stop pedestrians from using it
but commuters have just bent aside the metal sign and some residents and commuters are still using it
The bridge closure has disrupted access for local businesses such as Delta Café
“We see the restoration of [the] park access as critical for commuters/workers for thousands of people – that’s why it was originally built in 2006 – as well as extensive recreational and fitness use for thousands of residents from far and wide across Johannesburg,” said Markus Borner
chair of the Craighall Residents Association
Despite years of warnings about the bridge
Councillor Williams has repeatedly raised concerns about erosion and structural weaknesses
The popular path next to the Braamfontein Spruit is at risk of collapsing due to severe erosion
had his garden and basement flooded during the recent storm
Councillor Williams said he joined the JRA for an environmental impact assessment on the river bank erosion
but said repairs are unlikely to be prioritised unless there was an immediate threat to life or property
“It could stay on their priority list forever,” said Williams
The bank of the Braamfontein Spruit has eroded significantly over time
threatening to collapse a well-used path in Delta Park and even causing flooding in residents’ gardens and basements
Braamfonteing Spruit has shifted more than 15m over the past few years
eroding the bank and threatening nearby paths and infrastructure
Resident Michael Moore put tyres in the waterway in a bid to divert the flow and prevent further erosion during flooding
Tyres placed in the waterway in an attempt to redirect the flow and reduce erosion during floods
Community-led initiatives hampered by budget shortfalls
The Craighall Residents Association is spearheading community efforts to address the issue. advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
The association’s Borner emphasised growing community support: “Local residents and businesses are working with a task force. Support has been huge. We now need to pull it together with [the City of Johannesburg] to get this fixed ASAP.”advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
“We can’t let this … be a long-term situation
Delta is one of Joburg’s prime assets,” emphasised Borner
especially since [the Covid-19] lockdown.”
progress is slow due to bureaucratic delays and the city’s financial constraints
A statement released on Friday by Williams reveals that no budget allocations are directly earmarked for Ward 90 in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) tabled in the Johannesburg Council this week
Although R53.6-million has been allocated for “Bridge Rehabilitation Renewal Bridges (Pedestrian and Vehicles)” city-wide
there is nothing specifically designated for the Blue Bridge
“Certainly nothing for the Blue Bridge across the Braamfontein Spruit
which has deteriorated further after the storms,” said Williams
urging residents to include the Blue Bridge in their submissions to the IDP
Conflicting assessments and JRA responsibility
securing reliable assessments and effective repairs remain challenging
A private engineer deemed the bridge to be unsafe
while another suggested it was stable for use
Williams stressed that only JRA engineers could officially assess its safety and cautioned against relying solely on private assessments
“I don’t want to encourage anyone to say that that bridge is safe,” Williams said
Daily Maverick reached out to the JRA on Friday
but the agency had not responded at the time of publication
First question: Where is the 100-year flood line
Why is a bridge built in 2006 collapsing after 19 years Oh forgive me

the 23-year-old son of acclaimed actress Sonia Mbele
will appear at the Randburg magistrate’s court on Monday on two counts of rape
Mbele made a brief appearance in court in March
which has garnered significant public attention due to Mbele’s familial ties and prior legal controversies
was postponed to April 14 to allow for the disclosure of the contents of the case docket
as confirmed by National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane
a decision that has sparked debate among observers
with some questioning the adequacy of the bail amount given the gravity of the allegations
The charges stem from a complaint filed by Mbele’s 17-year-old girlfriend
who alleged that he raped her on December 14 and 15 at his residence in Morningside
According to her statement to the Sandton police
the couple had been on a date at Clearwater Mall on December 14
Mbele reportedly suggested stopping by his home to charge his phone
and it was there that the alleged incidents occurred
describes feeling violated allegedly by someone she trusted
This is not Mbele’s first brush with controversy
he faced accusations of physical assault from a former girlfriend
though that case was struck off the roll when the complainant failed to appear in court
Sonia Mbele publicly condemned her son’s actions
stating that he would face consequences and undergo rehabilitation
The recurrence of serious allegations has fuelled public discourse
with some online commentators expressing frustration over the latest postponement
while others speculate about the complexities of the case
with prosecutor Given Mbenzi requesting additional time to strengthen the state’s case through further consultation with the complainant
appearing composed and using crutches due to an unrelated incident

South Africa (25 October 2024) – The Randburg SPCA has extended their reach by opening a second charity shop in Linden
The shop is stocked with furniture and curated second-hand goods to cater to a new market
Charity shops are our favourite kinds of shops which is why we have a list dedicated to them and regularly feature those that are needing some extra help
Many charities fund themselves by having a charity shop on the premises which sells second-hand items and sometimes even new items
These little shops are treasure troves filled with hidden gems and secret finds at prices that would make your purse stay flush
Charity shops are a great asset to society because they offer a resource for finding affordable alternatives while giving back
They are a great option for people who have stepped away from fast fashion retailers and need a good source of clothing to shop for
Bookworms who cannot afford the newest books can purchase bags full of them from a charity shop
The second Randburg SPCA charity shop will sell goods to raise funds for their animal welfare work too
They are in need of good quality donations to keep the shop stocked
The Linden shop is an exciting new addition and this is all you need to know:
They would love support of shoppers and donors alike

The majority of the reported issues originated during the storms,” Mangena stated
Randburg and Hursthill Service Delivery Centres (SDC) emerged as the most severely impacted areas

Mangena assured residents that teams are actively working on the ground to restore power and resolve the backlog of logged outages
“While we have strengthened our operational teams to tackle this situation
localised flooding presents significant challenges for timely responses

“We acknowledge the frustration our customers are experiencing
