Premier Alan Winde took part in the official sod-turning ceremony for the multi-million Rand renewable energy project being constructed in Riversdale
and renewable energy to this growing hub of economic activity and job creation.
Executive Mayor of Hessequa Municipality and Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy Samantha Graham-Maré joined him for this momentous occasion
“While I join millions of Western Cape residents in welcoming the over 300-day respite from load shedding
we must not allow ourselves to be lulled into a false sense of energy security,” remarked the Premier
“Now more than ever we must use this opportunity to keep enabling municipalities in our province to explore and invest in alternative energy solutions
with an added focus on making power more affordable and environmentally friendly
We know that Eskom is threatening a staggering 44% in electricity sales to municipalities in the upcoming financial year and a project like this will help the municipality absorb some of the worst of these price increases and pass on those benefits to its residents
This project is not just ensuring energy resilience
which is much needed after the disastrous spate of power cuts
we are also taking a more responsible approach to power generation through renewable and affordable energy provision.”
This energy project will be critical in protecting the residents of Riversdale and its surrounds from any further Eskom power cuts in the future
and driving job creation in the region.
The Western Cape Government encourages the private sector to keep playing its part in building up a sustainable and cost-effective energy system in the province
“The energy sector is bristling with opportunity and we stand ready to build partnerships to avoid the return of load shedding,” stated the Premier
As much as the energy crisis has plagued South Africa
the exorbitant cost of electricity is also compounding the country’s economic growth woes
Eskom has applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) for a more than 40% increase in electricity tariffs
“The provincial government strongly opposes this
This would put our residents under even more pressure
This is why we must enable private sector stakeholders to help us reduce our reliance on Eskom for our energy needs. Where there is a reliable energy supply there is economic growth, investment
“Today is a historic moment as Riversdale is on course to become the first town in the Western Cape
This renewable energy project will provide reliable power to the town’s residents
It is a bold step forward in addressing the energy crisis
while also helping to boost Riversdale’s economy.”
“Let us see the soil we turn today as a symbol of hope and growth
May it mark the beginning of new opportunities
In lauding the Western Cape Government and Hessequa Munipality’s forward-thinking approach to tackling the energy crisis, Deputy Minister Graham-Maré said, “I want to applaud the Western Cape Government for its vision and proactive leadership in helping municipalities integrate renewable energy into their business model
and to Hessequa Municipality for playing a leading role in the country in leveraging renewable energy for the benefit of all residents”
The Western Cape Government’s efforts to ensure affordable
reliable and renewable energy extend across the province

A Riversdale man who was wrongly sentenced and convicted to three years’ imprisonment for a traffic violation has been acquitted by the Western Cape High Court after the “gross irregularity” was discovered
Ashlon Jacobs pleaded guilty to a traffic contravention where he was charged for intentionally and unlawfully operating a vehicle without the consent of the owner or the person in lawful possession of the car
This was after he was arrested near Bali Trading
Jacobs never admitted to “driving” or “riding” in the vehicle
he admitted that he alone pushed the car to the airfield
not admitted facts sufficient to sustain the elements of either “driving” or “riding” in the car
The accused also conveyed that he was not inside the vehicle at the time he was found with the car
Jacobs was convicted and sentenced for a different crime than the one mentioned in the written guilty plea
he was sentenced for contravening the General Law Amendment Act (“the GLAA”)
After Jacobs served a year of his sentence
the magistrate discovered a mistake in the conviction and sentence while preparing for an annual quality control inspection
In the special review received by high court judge Robert Henney
the magistrate noted: “The following mistakes made by me were detected while I was preparing for my annual quality control inspection and doing overhead checking of the cases I finalised
“The accused pleaded guilty to a charge of contravening section 66(2) Act 93 of 1996… It is now evident to me that the accused actually pleaded guilty to contravening section 1(1) Act 50 of 1956
This oversight cannot be explained by me and any attempt might sound as an attempt to exonerate me of any blame
I proceeded to sentence the accused on 2023/9/13 to a period of 36 months’ imprisonment
I can merely speculate that I read the provisions of section 89(3) of Act 93 of 1996 incorrectly or confused the two section(s)
“I can even speculate that I read the plea before imposing sentence and sentenced the accused as if he was convicted of contravening section 1(1) Act 50 of 1956
at fault and am now attempting to remedy the situation,” the magistrate proffered in his special review application
Henney said the oversight of the magistrate was a “gross irregularity” and that it should have been apparent to the magistrate
and Jacobs’ legal representative that he was found guilty of a different crime
“The charge could have been amended and a not guilty plea could have been entered
the appellant’s attorney could have consulted with the appellant to take instructions on whether the appellant still wished to plead guilty to the wider offence of ss 1(1) of the GLAA or to contravening section 66(2) of the RTA
“The failure of the appellant’s legal representative to intervene is also a major factor that contributed to the injustice
As the person who drafted the written guilty plea statement
the legal representative should have been aware of the substantive requirements of the relevant crimes
It is implicit that the legal representative must have explained the different crimes to the appellant
“The effect of the error is that the accused must still serve two years of a three-year sentence of a crime he did not plead guilty to and for which a wrong sentence was pronounced
The prejudice and injustice to the appellant in these circumstances are apparent and do not require further elucidation,” said Henney

Riversdale in the Western Cape will become the first small town in the country to supply its businesses and residents with solar power. A sod-turning ceremony was held for the R210 million, 10-megawatt solar farm, which will consist of about 20 000 solar panels and battery energy storage.
Representatives from national, provincial and local government attended the event.
The country has been loadshedding-free for more than 300 consecutive days but the energy crisis is far from over.
The Western Cape wants to become less dependent on Eskom through its energy resilience programme.
The province is leading the way in energy innovation.
“The Western Cape is an example for renewable energy in other provinces,” says Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy Samantha Graham-Maré.
The solar farm will ensure an uninterrupted power supply to the town and is already attracting more investment and development opportunities.
The first phase is expected to supply power to local businesses, by the start of next year. And after three years, it should be rolled out to all residents of the Hessequa region.

GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - A veld fire in the Jongensfontein area that had previously been extinguished, flared up quickly and became uncontrollable due to strong south-easterly winds the day before Christmas.
Emergency backburning was implemented and continued throughout the night, with the close-out of two burns on the south-westerly and north-westerly flanks achieved by 06:00 on Christmas morning. The wildfire remains contained.
"GRDM Fire and Rescue Services have scaled down their main station crew for this incident," said GRDM Executive Mayor Andrew Stroebel.
Mopping up and patrolling efforts will now be handled by the GRDM Riversdale crew and the Working on Fire Riversdale ground crew, with standby support readily available from Hessequa Municipality.
Fire Chief Deon Stoffels said: "We remain on high alert due to a predicted change in wind direction from the west later today and into tomorrow."
Garden Route District Wildfire: Kammanassie, George Municipal Area
The eastern flank of the Kammanassie wildfire remains active in an inaccessible area and is slowly spreading toward the east and Potjiesberg. Firefighters were able to make great progress throughout the night.
"Forecasted high temperatures, low humidity, and variable wind conditions are expected to challenge firefighting efforts. These factors, combined with the rugged terrain, may contribute to increased fire behavior and complicate containment strategies toward the east especially," said Deon Stoffels, GRDM Fire Chief.
Farms and structures are further east, and this is being closely factored into planning and response efforts.
The Garden Route District Municipality, the Southern Cape Fire Protection Association (East Region), and Working on Fire are attending to this wildfire. Should you spot a wildfire, please report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or send a WhatsApp message to 081 709 5193.
Garden Route District Wildfire: Buffelsdift (N9), Oudtshoorn Municipal Area
A lightning strike caused a wildfire north of the N9 near Buffelsdift late yesterday afternoon, Thursday 26 December.
Fire Management Units and farmers from Red Dot Farms and surrounding farms, played a significant role in containing the wildfire, using tractor carts to prevent its spread to the north, east, and south.
Currently, the only active fire line is on the western side, as confirmed by the Garden Route District Municipality Fire Services during assessment last night.
Efforts this morning will focus on addressing the western wildfire line to prevent further spread.
Garden Route District Wildfire: De Kombuys, Oudtshoorn Municipal Area
A lightning strike has caused a wildfire north of Oudtshoorn, in the De Kombuys area, just north of Wilgewandel.
The fire is active in mountainous terrain, which is currently inaccessible for firefighting crews.
Oudtshoorn Municipality teams are closely monitoring the situation, as structures are approximately 1.5 kilometers to the south.
Garden Route Wildfires: Robinson Pass, Mossel Bay Municipal Area
A lightning-induced wildfire was detected on Robinson Pass late last night, initially burning with high intensity on the western side of the Pass.
Currently, the area is covered in mist, and the fire line appears broken at this stage.
CapeNature, Oudtshoorn, and Mossel Bay teams are monitoring the fire, which remains active in higher elevations of the mountain. Garden Route District Municipality will attend this fire later this morning.
Favourable weather conditions are forecasted for later this afternoon, with an expected 2mm of rain that might help extinguish this wildfire.
Should you spot a wildfire, please report it immediately to the GRDM Emergency Call Centre at 044 805 5071 or send a WhatsApp message to 081 709 5193.

The storied Riversdale Cup produced more final-day drama in its 2025 edition with two come-from-behind winners at Riversdale Golf Club in Melbourne on Sunday
birdied the first playoff hole to prevent Amelia Harris (Yarra Yarra) from repeating her women’s event success from 2023
while Max Moring (Yarra Yarra) won the men’s title by closing with a 6-under-par 66 to run down Hamish Farquharson (Metropolitan)
Seventeen-year-old Jang fired a final round of 5-under-par 68 in the final round to catch Harris
who had started a blustery Sunday with a six-shot lead
Jang birdied four of her final seven holes to be one shot in front when she finished her round
the Victorian calmly birdied the short par-4 finale to draw level but couldn’t get up and down in the playoff
while Jang hit an outstanding bunker shot to inside two metres and rolled in the putt for the clinching three
“Winning the tournament is just such a gift to me,” Jang said
“I wasn't even thinking about winning
Jang’s win sees her name added to a women’s trophy that also features LPGA Tour members Sarah Kemp and Karis Davidson
Moring trailed Farquharson by five shots overnight but ate into his fellow Victorian’s margin with birdies at the fifth
12th and 13th while Farquharson gave up the lead when he bogeyed the par-4 16th
a birdie at the final hole not quite enough to force the second Sunday playoff
Moring finished on 11-under-par after earlier rounds of 65-72-74
This is one of my favourite events of the year
so it's great to get my name on the trophy,” Moring said after coming the latest winner of Australia’s second oldest amateur event
“I was in the final group a couple of years ago
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the eventual winner
who had to overcome the unwanted surprise of a shank from the middle of the fairway on the seventh hole
He recovered from that mishap to make a par-5 and ended up being bogey-free in the final round
That's probably the highlight and a pivotal moment,” the 19-year-old
Moring joins a list of Riversdale Cup winners that includes Robert Allenby
Tom Ryan from Eastwood Golf Club clinched the All Abilities title by a shot after driving the green on the final hole and making a birdie to hold off Steven Alderson (Willunga)
Highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 15th on Sunday
Ryan shot rounds of 73-76 to Alderson’s 77-73

Tata secures a key position in the JV formed to develop the Mozambique Coal Project
as well as a 40% share of the off-take for coking coal
Tata will also have the option to participate above this level of tonnage
and may participate with Riversdale in future opportunities on Riversdale's surrounding tenements
The JV comprises two licences (the Benga and Tete licences) and covers an area of 24,960 hectares (approximately 96.7 square miles)
Riversdale Mining holds a total acreage of over 290,000 hectares (1,120 square miles) in Mozambique
Riversdale Mining had recently announced a major coal resource in the Benga Licence
Based on the drilling results undertaken by Riversdale
the total Resource is estimated at 1.225 billion tonnes categorized as Inferred Resources and is in accordance with the JORC Code 2004
a total of 720 million tonnes is considered to have the potential to be extracted by open-cut methods
The coking coal derived from this project will be supplied to the Tata Steel Group's facilities in Europe
At the signing ceremony in Sydney on 30 November 2007
Riversdale Chairman and CEO Mr Michael O'Keeffe said that the formation of the Joint Venture with the global steel major Tata Steel would ensure the coal project in Mozambique was well positioned to exploit the full potential of the Moatize region
The value of Tata's on-the-ground experience should not be under-estimated for a project of this scale
This was a major consideration for Riversdale
and we look forward to working with Tata as the project advances
"The JV with Tata Steel represents the best possible outcome for these tenements in Mozambique
The global steel business of Tata has an increasing need to source coal
and the Mozambique Coal Project is well positioned to help meet their future demands for hard coking coal." Riversdale recently announced a capital raising that will see up to AUD235 million (approximately 206.988 million USD) of additional funds available to develop the company's projects in Mozambique
"We are in an extremely strong position to develop into a regional force in the coal markets
Riversdale now has an extensive portfolio of tenements in Mozambique of over 290,000 hectares (1,120 square miles)
an initial JORC Code compliant inferred resource of over 1.2 billion tonnes of coal
and over AUD300 million (approximately 264.24 million USD) of funding to advance its interests in the region," Mr O'Keeffe said
"Riversdale has a dominant land holding in a coal region of increasing global significance
a supportive government and strategic joint venture partner of similar standing in Tata Steel
Our overall position and timing could not be better," Mr O'Keeffe said
Mozambique is fast-becoming a region of global significance for the coal sector
In addition to Riversdale and Tata Steel's involvement
Companhia Vale do Rio Doce ("CVRD") has also invested significantly in plans to advance a massive coal project next to Riversdale's tenements in Moatize
The Managing Director of Tata Steel Limited
Mr B Muthuraman said: "Tata Steel is very pleased to have signed this agreement
Tata Steel has vast experience of coal mining spanning over several decades and will be contributing technical expertise to the Joint Venture"
Mr Muthuraman further stated that this investment is a significant step in Tata Steel's initiatives for raw material security
It gives Tata Steel an opportunity to participate in the development of the region as a coal resource for its global operations
This will enhance Tata Steel's long term competitiveness
Mr Muthuraman further added that it is Tata philosophy to participate and be a part of a country's development process and Tata Steel through its well known and well acknowledged social initiatives will make a positive impact on improving the quality of life of the people of Mozambique

A full brother to the promising 3-year-old Zetalyn, this colt is out of a city-placed, two-time-winning half-sister to the Group winners Cosmic Force and Onemorezeta (Onemorenomore) and the Listed winner Razeta (Deep Field).
Hailing from the debut crop of a horse whose foals have created a big impression, this bright chestnut is a half-brother to three winners including the Nishikado (Invader) who was unbeaten in Australia before heading to Hong Kong.
An Ascot-placed winner, his imported dam is a daughter of the Group 1-placed, two-time Group winner Macleya (Ger) (Winged Love {Ire}), also dam of the stakes winner Saltonstall (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and grandam of the G2 Italian Oaks winner Tomiko (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}).
His third dam Minaccia (Ger) (Platini {Ger}) is also a stakes-winning successful broodmare represented by two stakes winners and two stakes placegetters as well as being grandam of the dual Group 1 winner Tribhuvan (Fr) (Toronado {Ire}).
Five of the six runners bred on this filly's Extreme Choice/Fastnet Rock cross are winners including the stakes winners Wollombi and Meridius and the former, like this filly, also carries a strain of Snippets.
That stallion's dam is the wonderful mare Easy Date (Grand Chaudiere {Can}) whose grandson Not A Single Doubt is Extreme Choice's sire; and he has also sired the Group 1 mare Espiona bred this way.
So the odds are in your favour with this filly from the debut crop of her Rosemont Stud-based, Group 3-winning sire.
She is a three-quarter sister to the Group 2-placed $400,000 Magic Millions graduate Extreme Diva (Extreme Choice) out of the city-placed winner On A Given Day (Fastnet Rock) whose stakes-placed dam Full Bloom (Snippets) is a granddaughter of the stakes-winning classy broodmare Snow Finch (Ire) (Storm Bird {Can}).
The dam of Snippets' stakes winners Captain Bax and Snippets' Lass, she is also the grandam of Snitzel and Hinchinbrook and the third dam of Private Eye (Al Maher).

"He went on a golf tournament with some of his friends
and they were expected to come back on Monday

Koertzen was born in Knysna and worked as a clerk for South African Railways until he became an umpire in 1981
He was appointed to several high-profile matches and retired in 2010

He officiated in 331 internationals including 108 test matches
Paying tribute to Koertzen’s contribution to cricket
Pholetsi Moseki said: “The passing of this titan is a sad loss for the game
to which he spent the better part of his life speaks volumes about his selfless dedication and commitment
another curtain of a rich legacy has fallen
let’s decree to embody his passion for umpiring and unearth a crop of umpires who will carry the fortunes of the game into the future.”

The Waikaka Rugby Club commemorated its 125th year at the weekend with more guests than anticipated
including a returning member from Melbourne who flew back to his old stomping ground
Organiser Tegan Pay said the club had been hoping for about 250 participants
but in the weeks before the reunion the guest list kept getting "bigger and bigger"
The weekend included a muster on the Friday night
children’s games and challenge cups for the adults on the Saturday followed by a formal dinner and then a golden oldies game to round it off yesterday
Waikaka Rugby Club veterans Wallace Davidson and Bruce Smillie
could be found in the team officials box on game day
having earned the overlooking spot through years of service
"I’ve been in there for about 25 years," Mr Davidson said
this was the third of its jubilees he had attended
He said the part of the weekend he was looking forward to the most was the oldies round yesterday
though at 77 he would be watching safely from the sidelines
saying he struggled to play at the last jubilee
Mr Smillie said returning members coming from the top and bottom of the country
showed the "camaraderie" the club continued to share
the Waikaka and Riversdale Rugby Clubs merged three years ago
a decision which Mr Davidson said was due to necessity
Mr Smillie said the merger was what the players wanted and what the club had to do to keep providing the game of rugby to the area
The Waikaka’s Senior B team and the division one Vikings both played their Wyndham rivals on Saturday for three shields between the regions
the Vikings lost against their opponents 27-28
the team and its local supporters were whisked away on party buses to Gore’s Town & Country Club to celebrate 125 years of rugby in the rural settlement
GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - Thanks to effective policing
Volvo XC60 that was stolen in Courtenay Street in George on Saturday evening
was recovered in Riversdale the following day
farm watches and local security companies combined resources in pursuit of the Volvo when they spotted the vehicle travelling along the N2 from the direction of Still Bay to Riversdale on Sunday
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies
the team pulled over the vehicle at a petrol station at the entrance of Riversdale and a search ensued.
were found in possession of the driver of the vehicle
All four occupants of the vehicle were arrested on a charge of possession of stolen property,” said Spies
Further investigation took the Flying Squad and Garden Route District Crime Combatting Team (CCT) members to a house in Adriaan Street
A search of the residence led to the recovery of various items
including music instruments and sound equipment
is also facing charges of possession of drugs as well as an additional charge of possession of suspected stolen property
All the suspects remain in police custody and are expected to make their first court appearance in the Riverdale Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 1 August
Riversdale Arts president Christine O’Connor said its yearly exhibition
can not go ahead this winter with the number of helpers the group now has on board
"I don’t think people actually realise how much work goes into it or how few people are doing it," she said
which hosts art classes and workshops for locals
has a cafe which is also in danger of closing as they can not find a caterer to fill the space
"We’re just going to have to downsize things just to be able to keep it going."
The multimedia exhibition takes place in the Riversdale Community Centre for two weeks and is the community centre’s biggest earner for the year
The exhibition also attracts schools in the area which have had their own designated section in the show and visited the centre for educational outings
It also had its own $1000 prize for the emerging artists category to foster young talent
Riversdale has a "very big" sporting community but Mrs O’Connor was passionate about maintaining the arts in the area because there needed to be something for people to do other than sports
The artist and farmer mentioned an ageing population and a change in lifestyle as reasons for the lack of volunteers
when women would stay at home and look after the children
people had children later as well as busy jobs
meaning they did not have as much time as they once did to get involved in community efforts
"We’ve got some young members of our group
Mrs O’Connor thought that just a few more hands were needed to make the show go ahead
if they realise what dire straits we’re in
Regardless of the future of the exhibition and the cafe
the Riversdale Arts Centre would still carry on regardless
with art classes available to members of the public looking to express their creative side
The centre also has its own pottery rooms and wheels and holds "teacup classes" run by local pottery guru Kerryn Miller
The rooms are open on the first and third Wednesday of every month for locals to work on their creative outlets

Since starting his farming journey in 1992
CD du Toit embraced conservation agriculture as his sole approach
understanding its necessity in working with nature
it will hurt you; it will take you out.” These words by CD du Toit
encapsulate the very essence of his remarkable journey
Du Toit’s story begins against the backdrop of a farm east of Riversdale in the Southern Cape
embarking on a journey that would change not only his life but also the landscape itself
While many saw the land merely as a resource to exploit
he saw it as a delicate ecosystem that required careful nurturing
His journey led him to become a qualified soil expert
deeply immersed in understanding the intricacies of soil biology and the delicate balance of carbon levels
there was never an alternative path; conservation agriculture was the only way forward
“The agricultural experts who help SSK’s conservation farmers all have their lands in good balance
I have a great passion for land,” he declares
His passion for conservation agriculture found a fertile ground in this relatively high-rainfall district
a stark contrast to the dry landscapes he had previously worked on
offered the opportunity to enhance soil quality and maintain its health
“I actually moved here because of the rain,” he reveals
reflecting on his choice to cultivate in this lush environment

In a world where profit often takes precedence over sustainability
Du Toit’s approach is a breath of fresh air
He practises conservation agriculture primarily by sowing cash crops and reserving a portion of his land for grazing ostriches
It’s a carefully thought-out strategy that balances profitability with environmental responsibility
“[Whether] you are a cattle or grain farmer
A cattle farmer whose soil is not right is not going to be successful
You have to get the ground right first,” CD emphasises
highlighting the importance of soil health as the foundation of agricultural success
Balancing the calcium-magnesium ratio in the soil
and preserving the moisture content in his fields are all part of Du Toit’s meticulous approach
His dedication to nurturing the land has resulted in the soil so fertile that it effortlessly absorbs moisture
a testament to the thriving underground ecosystem he has cultivated
his commitment to conservation extends to the preservation of native wildlife
His efforts have led to the resurgence of bushbuck
As the region embraces conservation farming practices
He dreams of a day when organic material in the soil reaches 6%
a level that would not only facilitate carbon capture but also secure sustainable profitability for farmers
His message to fellow farmers is clear: “You just need to start”
and his story serves as a powerful testament to the potential of conservation agriculture
showing us that it is possible to cultivate both land and prosperity while preserving the delicate balance of nature
guiding us towards a more sustainable and harmonious future with the land that sustains us all

Today the StarPhoenix talks to Mel and Alisa Skalicky and their son Jackson
who opened Loqui Restaurant in Riversdale in June
Article contentThe family took a lot of time touring restaurants across the country to find the right fit for their own restaurant
They had a local contractor build Loqui (pronounced ‘low key’) from the ground up in Riversdale; Mel did some of the interior work himself
Subscribe now to read the latest news in your city and across Canada
Create an account or sign in to continue with your reading experience
Loqui features a wide variety of items in an ever-evolving menu
They have created a casual and relaxed environment in a unique space for customers from all over the world
Mel: My son really wanted to do the restaurant
He is a chemical engineer and he was kind of tired of it
So we looked around and we decided if we build it ourselves
Jackson and myself traveled right across Canada going to different restaurants and even down into Austin
We just wanted to get different ideas of restaurants
And then we had Miners Construction as the general contractors building it
Mel: I own a smaller café called Tastebuds Café on Lorne Avenue
but it’s a much smaller project than this one
Jackson: I grew up in the restaurant industry with Tastebuds Café
I graduated from chemical engineering in 2011
and I went and I sold engineering equipment for 11 years
I just got different ideas about cocktails
Some people might say it’s slanted more Asian a bit
Jackson: Our whole menu is kind of meant to be shared
We do globally-inspired and locally sourced
We really try to make sure that we have a lot of options for any dietary concern
we have a gluten-free fryer that’s also a vegan fryer
Just in general we have quite a few vegetarian and vegan options
We tend to find a decent amount of vegans like to visit us just because we have quite the options
Right on our menu there are symbols for each dietary restriction

Mel: Our number one seller is our Khao Soi
It’s a chicken breast on a bed of noodles with a curry broth
Jackson: Our Khao Soi (comes with) a northern Thai curry served with rice noodles
It’s a coconut curry broth topped with crispy rice
Jackson: Gua Bao is served with a ginger glaze on the pork belly
It’s a smaller plate and people can snack on it
The Gua Bao are coming from Taiwan originally
They are a fluffy steamed bun served open-faced
Jackson: It’s a mid-century modern esthetic
We used an Indonesian tropical hardwood called balau
There are planter boxes with all the same wood
We had custom tables designed and built from a company called Seen Furniture
They are in our neck of the woods in Saskatoon
Mel: We noticed that a lot of people were going back to lots of wood
We put quite a bit of wood on the inside of the restaurant
The solid walnut tables are all handmade by a local furniture maker
We used just local guys for everything in here
There are six big skylights in the ceiling of this place that are all 4 ft by 4 ft
And then we’ve got a big courtyard in the backyard that’s all fenced in where we usually have pub tables
But now that it’s (winter) it’s just a big area with lights and stuff
What we hope to do next year in the courtyard is go with more games
like cornhole or ping pong or stuff like that
If we find something that’s not selling then we’re open to trying something else
So now we’re doing a Diefenbaker Lake trout
Q: Could you tell us about that Diefenbaker trout
The Diefenbaker trout is served with a cream sauce and then we have local lentils underneath with locally sourced flavors
We use a lacto-fermented chanterelle butter
tomato and lentils are kind of the bed of the dish
One of them isn’t a beer — it’s shaft from Lucky Bastard here in town
But the other are nine different types of draft
The ninth is a beer we really like out of Calgary
It’s a brewery there that we visited called Ol’ Beautiful
Alisa: We have a nice compilation of wines and sparkling wines
They’re all curated very specifically to compliment what we have on the menu
Our staff are very knowledgeable in our selections
We do have a beautiful orange pinot grigio
One of them is a banana cream pie that is vegan
And we have a sticky toffee pudding with ice cream on top that we locally source
Jackson: Loqui means to talk or to speak in Latin
and that’s what we’re trying to facilitate
people joining together and people sharing food
Mel: We also wanted to make it that the restaurant is ‘low key’
You don’t have to get dressed up formally to come to the restaurant
Q: What sets you apart from other restaurants
Mel: I think the decor and our food choices
so many people have walked in and said you don’t even think you’re in Saskatoon when you walk into this restaurant
Chef Justin is very good about putting the food together and he’ll come out and talk to people when he gets a bit of a break
I think people like to see that the owners are around and paying attention to the restaurant

There was a considerable stir in Cromwell on Saturday morning when it became known that the Kawarau Gold Mining Co had
pegged off sites for the erection of dams at the outlets of Lakes Hawea and Wanaka
is filing applications for dam sites in the Warden’s Court at Cromwell
and the company’s agents are now pegging off the Molyneux for some distance below Cromwell
It appears that several people had already pegged off sites in the Kawarau River
and had been "sitting" on them to see if they could get in
and these people will have to show that they are bona fide miners
The whole matter will have to be discussed in the Warden’s Court and
it is not going to build dams for other people

Suitable subjects who are willing to give their blood for transfusion in emergency cases are not always available
and to overcome this difficulty the Auckland Hospital authorities are seeking the names of those who would be willing to volunteer when required
In most instances (says our Auckland correspondent) the relatives or friends of patients are quite willing to give their blood
have no one who would act as a "donor." It is to meet such cases as these that the hospital authorities are seeking to have a list of persons on any of whom a call may be made
It is anticipated that as a result of the appeal there will be a sufficient list of people who are ready to be called on when wanted
A test of his blood showed that he was a suitable donor
and his blood was used on Friday in an emergency case
Remuneration is offered to those whose blood is taken
though in some cases volunteers are willing to act as donors without any payment

The casket was up for sale by Invercargill woman Trish Turner
who was moving to the North Island and needed to downsize
She originally bought the coffin "for an absolute bargain" from a Dunedin builder who had gone into liquidation
I was going to get my brother to put some shelves in it and use it has a novelty bookcase."
While the coffin is being relocated to its new Riversdale farm home
New owners Marcus and Tracey Pennicott plan to use it as a prop in the back of their hearse
They will have it airbrushed to match their custom-painted hearse and Harley-Davidson’s paintwork
The couple often entered their hearse in car shows
They were hoping it would be well received at the next Balfour Backyard Beauties exhibition this weekend
Ms Turner assured the Otago Daily Times the coffin was in unused condition
One of its handles was still plastic-wrapped
plan B had been to use for its original purpose
it’s always something that you’re going to need ..
Visitors to her property had been put off by its presence in the lounge because it "creeped them out"
She failed to understand why people found it creepy
But after someone failed to refit the lid properly after looking inside
there’s no way in hell I would’ve slept in the same room with it."

Those who won scholarships were Harley Sheat
Ms Sheat was studying veterinarian nursing in Invercargill
Ms North was studying teaching through the University of Otago

Mr Nicholson said it was important to help young adults follow their passions and achieve their goals
The scholarships have been running for about 10 years

The station was found to be in need of strengthening
The expected cost to build the station was about $150,000 in 2015 but when contacted by the Otago Daily Times
