Gautrain Chief Executive Officer Tshepo Kgobe says train services between Rosebank and Park Station could resume by next week
An illegal borehole drilling activity on a private property has compromised a section of the Gautrain tunnel system
Services between Park Station and Rosebank have been halted since Saturday.
Kgobe says they have scaled up their bus services to mitigate the disruption.
“We are looking at it to be in place for this week at least. And we have already decided on the method of repair and that in itself will take about a week, and then with us making sure that in the coming week we could then return to proper service. “

A judge in Edinburgh has ruled that the 2023 decision to give the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas development plans the go-ahead was "unlawful" and failed to take into consideration the resultant carbon emissions of the extraction
In what is now being celebrated as an ‘historic win for the ocean and for the world’
the decision to greenlight a giant new oilfield off Shetland has
The proposed Rosebank development – the UK’s biggest untapped oilfield – had been given the go-ahead in 2023 under the previous government
granting consent to develop oil and gas fields across the Rosebank to the north west of Shetland and the Jackdaw gas field off Aberdeen
a judge in Edinburgh has upheld a legal challenge levied by Greenpeace and Uplift against the decision
The environmental campaign groups argued the UK Government and North Sea Transition Authority (NTSA) had acted unlawfully when granting consent to the projects
the courts have ruled that environmental impact assessments into the development of oil and gas fields in the Rosebank and Jackdaw at the time failed to take into account downstream emissions resulting from the burning of the extracted fossil fuels
executive director and vice president at Oceana UK
has called the ruling an “historic moment” that “marks the start of a new path to clean energy and clean seas”
and a toxic cocktail of pollutants are already ripping the heart out of UK seas
blighting our internationally important wildlife
from seabirds to seals,” he said in a statement posted to the Oceana UK website
“A major oilspill from Rosebank could have devastated no less than 16 UK marine protected areas
“This marks the end of lying to ourselves about the reality of the climate crisis and the deep harm to the ocean perpetrated by Big Oil.”

The former Conservative-led UK government first approved Shell’s proposals to develop the Jackdaw field in 2022
and cleared Equinor and Ithaca Energy’s plans to drill in the Rosebank field in September 2023
Lord Ericht said the decision to grant this consent was unlawful
and ruled the consent should be ‘reduced’ and reconsidered
he said: “Having considered all the circumstances of the case and the various public and private interests
I have reached the conclusion that the balance lies in favour of granting reduction
The public interest in authorities acting lawfully and the private interest of members of the public in climate change outweigh the private interest of the developers
Equinor and Ithaca in respect of their private interest do not justify the departure on equitable grounds from the normal remedy of reduction of an unlawful decision.”
The ruling has ordered the reduction be suspended pending the Secretary of State’s re-consideration of the matter
which he said would give companies ‘options’ on how to proceed in the interim
that no oil or gas should be extracted before a new decision on consent is made
“The government now has the chance to remake the decision after their oil and gas consultation concludes in the spring,” said a spokesperson from the campaign group
we can and must stop new oil and gas developments now to stay within ‘safe’ climate limits
But this mustn’t come at the expense of workers and communities that have relied on these industries for generations
“New fields like Rosebank won’t solve the decline of jobs in the North Sea
the number of jobs supported by the oil and gas industry in the UK has more than halved
the way to create long-term secure jobs is to invest in a ‘just transition’ and support workers to transition into clean energy industries that have a future.”
Shell has called for swift action from the government as it seeks new consents
while Equinor has “welcomed the ruling” as a chance to continue with progressing the Rosebank project while waiting for new consents
A spokesperson from the Department for Energy Security and New Zero
said: “The government has already consulted on revised environmental guidance to take into account emissions from burning extracted oil and gas to provide stability for industry
#StopRosebank concluded their statement with a call to action
“Today has been a massive step forward towards a sustainable fossil-free future for all
The next months will set the course for the UK’s energy future
Let’s make sure it’s a future we can be proud of.”

Exclusive: Future of further projects uncertain after Rosebank and Jackdaw licences were found to have been unlawfully granted
Thirteen more oil and gas licences could be cancelled as ministers decide new guidance for fossil fuel extraction after a landmark court case
The admission that many more licences may ultimately be unlawful comes on the back of cabinet tensions over the future of two major oil and gas fields – Rosebank and Jackdaw – whose licences were last month found to have been unlawfully granted
A judge ruled their applications did not take into account the emissions that arise from burning the oil and gas extracted from the projects
suggested she was keen to find ways through new guidance to allow the licences to proceed
who has previously described drilling at Rosebank as “climate vandalism”
is in the midst of a consultation about how new oil and gas projects should account for these emissions
The result of that consultation will ultimately decide whether such projects are allowed to take place
It can now be revealed there are more oil and gas projects whose futures hang in the balance. In an exchange with the Green MP Carla Denyer, the energy minister Michael Shanks was forced to admit that 13 oil and gas fields currently at consent phase are subject to the recent court ruling
A number of Labour MPs told the Guardian earlier this month that they believed there would be significant resistance in the party if the guidance ultimately led to the drilling being allowed to go ahead at Rosebank
But Shanks told parliament this week that the impact of the court ruling was likely to extend beyond Rosebank and Jackdaw
He said “existing licences will be honoured
and we will not remove licences from fields that already have a licence
consents – the point at which extraction takes place – must take into account climate tests
and not least the compatibility test laid down by the supreme court
Any applications now or in future must take account of that.”
A source at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said licences that were at “consent level” would be subject to this consultation which is being helmed by Miliband
The result of that consultation may preclude the development of new oil and gas projects in the North Sea, the source said, but would depend how far along they were in their application phase. Government data shows there are 13 licences at that stage
The guidance will cover how companies can account for “scope three emissions” – those caused by burning fossil fuels
It comes after a landmark case last year which set a precedent that these emissions have to be accounted for in planning applications
This guidance is under consultation but it is expected to set out how scope three emissions can be recorded and accounted for
Climate experts including Tessa Khan at Uplift
who brought the successful case against Rosebank
have argued that no scope three emissions are acceptable and that allowing new oil and gas fields would breach the UK’s climate goals
Alexander Kirk, a fossil fuels campaigner at Global Witness, said the consultation should result in the cancellation of all the new licences in the pipeline. He added: “What the vast majority of people in the UK want is energy that’s cheap and clean, like wind and solar. Fossil fuels are dirty
and we know that they’re turbo-charging climate breakdown
“If this government wants to stay true to its climate promises
From the LA wildfires to devastating floods closer to home – from Leicestershire to Valencia – our climate is reaching boiling point
Our politicians must do what they can to prevent further damage and that means keeping oil and gas in the ground.”
A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero spokesperson said: “Fields with a licence but not yet consented may be awaiting additional guidance before determining whether to proceed with their developments – this depends where they are in the regulatory process
this is a commercial matter for the relevant companies.”
