The two giants of South African football will meet again at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday in the Nedbank Cup final
Augusto Palacios believes Saturday's match was a game of two halves
while also noting that the players struggled with clinical finishing
and the second half saw Pirates come out strong
It was a game marked by missed chances,” says the man fondly known as ‘Njenje’
It was a good game with an unpredictable outcome
"The final of the Nedbank Cup will be very challenging because both clubs will aim to win with a strong approach and attitude
It's also difficult to predict who will come out on top
"It’s unprecedented to have two derby matches within six days
Congratulations to the supporters of both teams for the past weekend
"The league game was played at a very good tempo
demonstrating a strong mentality throughout the match

"One of my concerns is the missed chance. That's something both teams need to address,” he adds.
Palacios believes the fact the upcoming clash will yet again have young players on show from both camps highlights the quality and future of Mzansi football.
"This upcoming match is particularly important as it is the last derby for the Pirates coach (Jose Riveiro) and a vital cup to win. The Pirates players understand the need to win this cup for their supporters, while the Chiefs coach (Nasreddine Nabi) is aware that this could be his first cup if circumstances align."

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi says Thabo Cele and Inacio Miguel were not fit enough to start the Soweto Derby on Saturday

Orlando Pirates’ former captain Happy Jele has given young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi profound advice ahead of the much-anticipated Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs
The Buccaneers will collide with Soweto rivals Amakhosi at the already sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon
The game is scheduled to kick off at 3.30pm
Mbokazi (19) has recently become one of coach Jose Riveiro’s trusted soldiers and an integral part of the Pirates squad since the injuries of Olisa Ndah and Thabiso Sesane
The teenager has been the talk of the town
building up to the biggest fixture on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) football calendar
as he is more than likely to make his first Soweto derby appearance
who holds the record for the most Soweto derby appearances for Pirates
advised Mbokazi to play the game and not the occasion
“I will first commend Mbokazi for how he has played because when he got the opportunity
He has been doing very well for the team,” Jele said during a wide-ranging interview on Sunday World Engage
“He has been playing in big games and competitions like the CAF Champions League against some of the best teams on the continent
my advice to him ahead of a big game like the Soweto derby
I would say that he must first be calm and relaxed because everyone is talking about him
he must play the game and not the occasion
anything can happen that can embarrass him
Perform the way he has been performing by taking it one game at a time and just enjoy the game – that is also another important thing
Amakhosi and the Sea Robbers go into the game both wounded after losing their respective games
building up to their back-to-back Soweto derbies
The two Soweto giants will also meet in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium next Saturday
both teams will be in search of three crucial points as Chiefs are fighting to solidify their top-eight spot while the Bucs are still chasing the league title against Mamelodi Sundowns

Orlando Pirates completed a Betway Premiership ‘double’ over Soweto derby rivals Kaizer Chiefs after claiming a 2-1 win at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
The Buccaneers came from a goal down to claim victory, bouncing back from their defeats to Pyramids FC (CAF Champions League) and Sekhukhune United (Premiership) in the past eight days to lay down a marker for a rematch against Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final next weekend. Pirates also closed the gap to league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns (who will be in action away to Cape Town City on Saturday night) to nine points.
As for the Amakhosi, this second successive loss extends their winless run in the league to seven matches, and is a further blow to their hopes of a top-eight finish. They remain in ninth, level with eighth-placed Chippa United, but have now played two more games than the Eastern Cape club.
The kick-off was delayed 30 minutes due to the late arrival of fans into the venue. Yet when the match did get going, it needed just 120 seconds to be set alight, as Chiefs claimed a stunning early lead: Dillon Solomons stole possession high up the pitch, drove forward and squared to Makabi Lilepo, whose first-time shot had the beating of goalkeeper Sipho Chaine’s right hand to make it 1-0.
Pirates were stunned by the early goal, but gradually worked their way back into the game and levelled at 1-1 in the 24th minute. Mohau Nkota played a well-weighted pass in behind the Chiefs defence for Evidence Makgopa, who provided a composed finish through the legs of goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.
The team in black nearly claimed the lead just past the half-hour mark when Tapelo Xoki headed on target from Deon Hotto’s free kick delivery, but Bvuma made an excellent reaction save to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Pirates continued to grow in confidence and created a chance for Makgopa a few minutes later, though this time his finish lacked the precision of the equalising goal, with the ball flashing wide of Bvuma’s right-hand post.
Chiefs ended the first half strongly and nearly went back in front in injury time before the break, as Yusuf Maart’s cross from the left was directed toward his own goal by Mbekezeli Mbokazi, but Chaine made a sharp save at his near post to keep the score level.
The Buccaneers made a tactical switch at the start of the second half, as Kabelo Dlamini replaced defender Paseka Mako, and Deon Hotto slotted into the left-back slot. Dlamini almost made an immediate impact, whipping a shot from the edge of the box just over the target in the 50th minute.
Pirates went ahead for the first time in the 69th minute, as Hotto and Relebohile Mofokeng combined to great effect, with the latter driving a low, left-footed shot through a crowded penalty to find the back of the net and put the visitors 2-1 up.
Bucs created further scoring chances for Nkota and Mofokeng, but Chiefs were able to survive and keep themselves alive in the game. The Amakhosi introduced the likes of Edson Castillo, Ashley du Preez, Tashreeq Morris and Thabo Cele to try and force an equaliser in the dying minutes.
However, the hosts were reduced to 10 men in injury time when Bradley Cross picked up a second yellow card and was sent off, effectively ending their hopes of a late comeback.
Pirates will be back in league action on Tuesday, 6 May, with a clash away to Golden Arrows, before they meet Chiefs again in the Nedbank Cup final at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban next Saturday, 10 May.

Orlando Pirates have revived their Betway Premiership title hopes, while Kaizer Chiefs’ chances of finishing in the top eight are hanging by a thread. The Buccaneers pulled off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Amakhosi at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon.
This was the 108th derby between the two Soweto giants.
Pirates were looking for a win to keep the pressure on leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while Chiefs were looking to return to the top half of the log. And it was Amakhosi who made it clear early on where they wanted to go.
DRC striker Makabi Lilepo caught the Buccaneers by surprise to score inside five minutes.
The hosts Chiefs looked to have settled down quickly. And Gaston Sirino should have punished the visitors, but he hesitated in the penalty area and the chance went to waste.
Amakhosi kept on piling the pressure, looking to increase the lead. Mduduzi Shabalala was looking for the penalty, but the referee waved play on. The Buccaneers started clawing their way back into the match. And they almost caught Chiefs by surprise with a quickly taken free kick, but they could not capitalise on the opportunity.
But it was just a matter of time before the visitors levelled matters. Evidence Makgopa made a brilliant run behind Chiefs’ sluggish defence and scored an equalising goal.
The visitors were now controlling the match, and they almost scored the second goal. But Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma made a brilliant save to deny Pirates captain Thapelo Xoki.
Makgopa had another chance to score his brace but he rushed his shot after doing so well to create the opening. Chiefs almost had a stroke of luck just before halftime.
Mbekelezi Mbokazi almost scored an own goal, but his goalkeeper Sipho Chaine came to the rescue.
The Buccaneers started the second half brightly. Relebohile Mofokeng made a good run on the left wing and laid the pass to substitute Kabelo Dlamini, who could not get his shot on target.
The visitors were on the attack again a few moments later, but Mohau Nkota’s dangerous cross was cleared by Bradley Cross.
Pirates finally took the lead. Deon Hotto made an entry in the box, but Mofokeng provided the finish to score his fifth league goal and his twelfth of the season in all competitions.
Nkota had a chance to increase the lead for his team, but his finishing left much to be desired. Pirates were now brimming with confidence, and Dillon Solomons almost scored an own goal from Deon Hotto’s cross.
Nkota was desperate for a goal, but he took the wrong option when he opted for a shot instead of passing Mofokeng.
The final score was 2-1 in favour of the Buccaneers, giving them back-to-back league wins over their bitter rivals this season.

Saturday’s match will be the first final between the two rivals since Nedbank took over as sponsors of this competition in 2008.
The last final between these two giants in this competition was in 2006 when Absa were still the sponsors.
Apart from feeling that decision went against them, the North African tactician says Amakhosi should also blame themselves for losing.

The biggest fixture on the domestic calendar normally defines how much both players and coaches endear themselves to fans at Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs
Riveiro has also given The Ghost all the bragging rights that come with succeeding in the derby
The Spaniard has now won five matches in this fixture
putting him in the same ranks as Stuart Baxter
He has needed just seven games in the derby to get his five
while Baxter had 11 matches plus two spells at Amakhosi to do the same
What makes it even better for Riveiro is that he is now the only coach to ever win five in a row in this fixture
The soft-spoken gaffer lost his first two but has since been on the winning side in this fixture since Sandile Mthethwa delivered an extra-time winner in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals two years ago as Pirates ran out 2-1 victors
Evidence Makgopa delivered the solitary goal in November 2023
before the next ended in a 3-2 win for Bucs
The fourth win came via Patrick Maswanganyi’s late winner from the spot in February
Then the fifth win was the 2-1 win on Saturday
No coach from both clubs has done five wins in a row like Riveiro since Pirates won the first PSL era meeting 4-1 in the Bob Save Super Bowl in November 1996
This is now the first time that Pirates have won five in a row against their closest rivals
the Glamour Boys have won on five consecutive occasions before
though worth noting is that it wasn’t under the same coach with Gavin Hunt
and Arthur Zwane all involved as head coaches
They won all five derbies played from March 2021 to February 2023
making it the first time that one of the two giants had recorded five consecutive victories in this fixture
Riveiro has one more derby to play on Saturday in the Nedbank Cup final
The Tunisian has lost back-to-back games against the Buccaneers but will be hoping to make it right this weekend in the Nedbank Cup
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has insisted his side should have received a penalty
which would have changed the outcome of the Soweto Derby
Amakhosi lost 2-1 to Orlando Pirates despite scoring in the second minute but goals by Evidence Makgopa and Relebohile Mofokeng saw Pirates run out victors
as Pirates completed back-to-back league doubles over their rivals
The result saw Chiefs remain outside the top eight
while Pirates close their gap on Mamelodi Sundowns to nine points
Nabi says referee Eugene Mdluli should have awarded his side an early penalty which could have made it 2-0
when Mbekezeli Mbokazi appeared to bring to down Mduduzi Shabalala inside the box
“I don’t think it’s a psychological thing,” he told SuperSport TV
“When we were leading 1-0 there was a clear penalty
If we get the penalty the game is going to be completely different
“It was individual mistakes that gave the opportunity to the opponent
We feel today we gave the victory to the opponent.”

Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye believes Orlando Pirates will beat Amakhosi in Saturday’s Soweto Derby
The Buccaneers enter the game 16 points ahead of their bitter rivals
While Pirates need to get back to winning ways to keep their slim chances of winning the Betway Premiership alive
Chiefs are fighting for a top-eight finish but have not won any of their last six league outings
The Sea Robbers also dominate the recent head-to-head record
and Khanye believes they will add another derby win on Saturday
I think they are bit nervous,” he told this publication
they’re better than Chiefs in terms of talent
and they’ve got players such as Maswanganyi
Nkota might win the Young Player of the Season as well
Thalente Mbatha is also better the Chiefs’ midfielders
“Pirates are also on a better position on the log as well
they are still in the race to win the league
they’re competing against a Sundowns that are very strong
“Pirates are in the better position compared to Chiefs who are fighting for top eight
Every time Chiefs play this game they get motivated
but also the nervousness comes to them as well
“Talent-wise we can’t compare Chiefs and Pirates players
my critic to him is that he had a whole pre-season with the players but he’s not improving the team
There are also some players who don’t deserve to play there
but I believe it was a wake-call for Pirates to lose against Sekhukhune
They will still have this belief that they can win the league
“I don’t see Kaizer Chiefs beating Orlando Pirates
I see another 1-0 like in the first leg.”

Chiefs welcomed back attacking duo Pule Mmodi and Gaston Sirino from suspension
with Patrick Maswanganyi not included in the match day squad
The embattled Amakhosi hit the ground running inside three minutes when Glodly Lilepo sneaked in the box and drilled into the far corner following Dillon Solomons’ cutback
Pirates weren’t rattled and levelled matters midway through the first half as Evidence Makgopa beat the offside trap to guide in a through pass from Mohau Nkota
The Amakhosi nearly conceded again on the half-hour mark with a glancing header from Xoki following a free-kick from Deon Hotto
but Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma denied him expertly
Makgopa fancied a first half brace a little later when he brought a long ball under control and got goal-side
while Sipho Chaine was called upon to keep out a potential own goal from Xoki at the other end
The Buccaneers withdrew Mako at the start of the second half and summoned Kabelo Dlamini on in his place
Dlamini almost enjoyed a dream entry from the bench when he got high-up to the edge of the box to meet a layoff from Mofokeng
Chiefs struggled to contain the pressure from the Buccaneers and trailed in the 68th minute when Hotto burst into the box before teeing up Mofokeng to slot in the far corner
Hotto remained influential a little later and pulled to the left of the area to cut inside to see Solomons nearly score an own-goal from his cross
who were reduced to ten men in added time when Bradley Cross was sent packing for bringing down Nkota
Pirates still had the fair share of chances as Dlamini sent a curling effort inches wide of the upright but they had done enough to secure maximum points
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana number one goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has looked ahead of the upcoming Betway Premiership Soweto Derby
saying it’s an important game for both sides
The Soweto giants go into the clash at the back of defeats to Marumo Gallants and Sekhukhune United
while also desperate for points for different reasons
Chiefs’ loss meant they dropped out of the top eight to ninth with 30 points in 25 matches
while Pirates’ defeat and results elsewhere meant they trail Mamelodi Sundowns by 12 points at the top of the log
Khune told iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago in edition 202 of the newspaper that it will boil down to how the sides prepare this week
He added that Amakhosi need to give their fans something and Pirates will want to give their outgoing coach Jose Riveiro a win in one of his last derbies
“We all know it’s a special fixture in our PSL calendar,” Khune told iDiski Times
“You know South Africa comes to a standstill whenever Chiefs and Pirates play each other
the same way things haven’t been going their way
the stadium will be painted gold and black
That’s what I respect about that institution
they haven’t been getting the results that the fans want
“And it depends on how you’ve been preparing for that encounter during the week
how ready the players are to win the three points and to also have those bragging rights
because the season is about to go to an end
There’s a lot of surprises that we can see going forward
“But it’s been an interesting season
they’ll come to this game fired up because they want to continue and do it for the coach
he is going to want to leave with a victory in the derby
“So there’s a lot that Pirates players are going to play for in honour of the coach in honour of their club
we can say the opposite that they need to come into that game for their pride and win the match for their pride.”

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has reflected on their incredible record of winning five Soweto Derbies since his arrival at the club
After losing the first derby when taking charge of Pirates
it’s a long time coming since a journalist sarcastically congratulated him for losing at the Calabash
Riveiro will also have the opportunity to break the record completely
having equalled Stuart Baxter’s five wins in this fixture
“That’s good [to win five derbies] definitely… hopefully [more]
not because of my record obviously,” he said.

you are the first Spanish coach to lose one game in FNB Stadium and now we’re sitting here with five victories.”

He is already the only coach to ever win four consecutive derbies through the PSL era years
The Spaniard has been on the winning side in this fixture since Sandile Mthethwa delivered an extra-time winner in the Nedbank Cup two years ago as Pirates ran out 2-1 victors
before the next ended in a 3-2 win for the Buccaneers
it was Patrick Maswanganyi with the late winner for a 1-0 triumph
No coach from both clubs has done four wins in a row like Riveiro since Pirates won the first PSL era meeting 4-1 in the Bob Save Super Bowl in November 1996
it will also be the first time that they have ever won five in a row against Chiefs
Amakhosi have won on five consecutive occasions before
though worth noting is that it wasn’t under the same coach
They won five derbies in a row from March 2021 to February 2023
then Stuart Baxter got a 2-1 victory in November of the same year
before taking another three points on a similar scoreline in March 2022

Kaizer Chiefs striker Wandile Duba and Orlando Pirates defender Nkosinathi Sibisi will miss the Soweto Derby this coming weekend due to suspensions
Chiefs have gone six matches without a win in the league and find themselves outside the top eight
they managed to reach the Nedbank Cup final
which is something that could salvage their season
Duba played a huge role Amakhosi’s Nedbank Cup semi-final victory over Mamelodi Sundown but the 20-year-old will miss the clash against Pirates this coming weekend after receiving his fourth yellow card in Chiefs’ loss against Marumo Gallants
Duba has scored six goals across all competitions this season
the Buccaneers have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last two matches against Egyptian side Pyramids and Sekhukhune United
Jose Riveiro will need to reshuffle his defence as they will miss Sibisi
The former Lamontville Golden Arrows received two yellow cards
in their 1-0 loss against Sekhukhune United
AmaZulu FC will miss three key players when they face Polokwane City – namely: Rowan Human
who has nine goal contributions this season
The three received their fourth booking in their 1-0 win over Lamontville Golden Arrows
The clash could decide the fate of Usuthu in their quest to finish in the top eight
as they will have only one game remaining for the season
Sekhukhune United will be without defender Sikhosonke Langa in their Limpopo derby against Magesi FC
Langa received his fourth yellow card midweek in their 1-0 win over Pirates
Babina Noko will have to do without him as they aim to cement their spot in the top three

Nabi was adamant his side can collect all three points at the Calabash on Saturday
which was decided on a small detail in the last minute (Patrick Maswanganyi's penalty)," said the Tunisian
"But we believe that we deserved better from that game through our performance
I think that Saturday’s game will be just like any other derby
We are more aware than the first one of what we can do
but the possibilities will be open for both teams
we believe we will be ready for what we are facing on Saturday
Even though we are not in the position we want to be
we know what this fixture means and how important it is to win it

The match, although significant in its own right, will also serve as a dress rehearsal for the Nedbank Cup final that will see the two teams clash once more on May 10 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Buccaneers got their reward in the 68th minute as Hotto did well to hold the ball up in the box before laying it off for Mofokeng
who unleashed a strike that sailed through Bvuma for his fifth league goal of the campaign
Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi responded with a double change for the final 13 minutes as Thabo Cele and Tashreeq Morris replaced Ngcobo and Pule Mmodi as they went in search of the equaliser
There would be no comeback for the Amakhosi

Orlando Pirates completed a Betway Premiership ‘double’ over Soweto derby rivals Kaizer Chiefs after claiming a 2-1 win at the FNB Stadium on Saturday
The Buccaneers came from a goal down to claim victory
bouncing back from their defeats to Pyramids FC (Caf Champions League) and Sekhukhune United (Premiership) in the past eight days to lay down a marker for a rematch against Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final next weekend

this second successive loss extends their winless run in the league to seven matches
and is a further blow to their hopes of a top-eight finish
but have now played two more games than the Eastern Cape club
The kick-off was delayed 30 minutes due to the late arrival of fans into the venue
it needed just 120 seconds to be set alight
as Chiefs claimed a stunning early lead: Dillon Solomons stole possession high up the pitch
drove forward and squared to Makabi Lilepo
whose first-time shot had the beating of goalkeeper Sipho Chaine’s right hand to make it 1-0
but gradually worked their way back into the game and levelled at 1-1 in the 24th minute
Mohau Nkota played a well-weighted pass in behind the Chiefs defence for Evidence Makgopa
who provided a composed finish through the legs of goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma
The team in black nearly claimed the lead just past the half-hour mark when Tapelo Xoki headed on target from Deon Hotto’s free-kick delivery
but Bvuma made an excellent reaction save to tip the ball over the crossbar
Pirates continued to grow in confidence and created a chance for Makgopa a few minutes later
though this time his finish lacked the precision of the equalising goal
with the ball flashing wide of Bvuma’s right-hand post
Chiefs ended the first half strongly and nearly went back in front in injury time before the break
as Yusuf Maart’s cross from the left was directed toward his own goal by Mbekezeli Mbokazi
but Chaine made a sharp save at his near post to keep the score level
The Buccaneers made a tactical switch at the start of the second half
as Kabelo Dlamini replaced defender Paseka Mako
and Deon Hotto slotted into the left-back slot
whipping a shot from the edge of the box just over the target in the 50th minute
Pirates went ahead for the first time in the 69th minute
as Hotto and Relebohile Mofokeng combined to great effect
left-footed shot through a crowded penalty area to find the back of the net and put the visitors 2-1 up

Amakhosi suffered their 12th defeat of the season on Saturday
going down to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby despite taking an early lead through attacker Glody Lilepo
a journalist asked Nabi if he thinks he is still the right man for the job and what gives him confidence that he can turn things around
which is something his side could not do after taking a lead within the first five minutes at FNB Stadium
I don't think you are the right man to decide if I am staying or if I am not
we can't expect immediate results," the Tunisian said via his assistant coach and translator Cedric Kaze
Nabi then decided to address the media himself
I told jouralists it's a transition season
you don't ask me why you stay here because of results
Don't provoke me because I am not a younger coach
Because it's not respect to tell me you have bad result

Amakhosi are having a dismal and are actually no better than they were last season or the campaign before that.
They've played 17 league matches in 2025 and have registered just four wins
Only four clubs in the league have conceded more than 30 goals and Chiefs is one of them
He's matched the club's worst number of loses in a season
and there's no telling what more could happen in the final two matches of the campaign
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi says they Soweto Derby is a unique experience with heritage that needs to be conserved
Nabi had a taste of the Rabat Derby between ASFAR and FUS in the Botola Pro
they Kariakoo Derby in Tanzania for three seasons when he dominated the domestic competition with Young Africans against Simba SC and the Kinshasa Derby between AS Vita Club and DCMP
he feels the fixture between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is something special
after experiencing it for the first time this season
where the game was settled with a last minute penalty by Patrick Maswanganyi three months ago
it’s not because I’m in South Africa… The Soweto derby is a South African
continental and international cultural heritage,” Nabi said about his first experiences of the game against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates
“It should be protected and promoted
like the Tunis derby with Club Africain and Esperance
“The Soweto Derby is more than football – we need to conserve and protect this heritage
I lived many of these moments of African derbies
it’s exceptional – but I love this Soweto Derby
It’s a cultural event that entertains
how people live the derby in South Africa…”

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has discussed why he felt comfortable to finish the Soweto Derby with six academy players
The Buccaneers started the game with Relebohile Mofokeng
while the Spanish coach also brought on Siyabonga Ndlozi
Boitumelo Radiopane and Simphiwe Selepe for his first-team debut in the second half
Riveiro stated that he doesn’t select based on age but based on talent
before explaining why academy players can give something special to the team
It’s about me putting them on the field but it’s because they are showing every week that they want to get the opportunity
they are prepared – you will never be fully prepared until you get the experience,” he said
And it’s about to give them the confidence
it’s going to give them a very important boost
what you get from the academy players is something that you cannot get from anybody else
They have something special; they used to look at the club in a different way
They spent some time around the team before
little by little absorbing the culture of that team
All of those things that play an important role in football
because like I said many times this is not Riveiro vision
“My job as a coach is to give them tools to do the things good
and that’s what we do and when the things are going well like today
you can imagine that the feeling for all of us is something special.”
