in Mpumalanga have tempered electricity meters
This was discovered by the power utility Eskom after it embarked on electricity meter audit in Tekwane
Illegal connections were immediately cut-off
after Eskom employees removed electricity transformers
90 of 118 households audited were found to have tempered with their meters
But community members mobilized and attacked Eskom employees
“We are not saying Eskom cannot come and do their auditing
We are saying not everyone can afford the electricity
so them coming here there should be protocol
they must involve the community and say this is how it’s going to go
Not them coming here and disposing everything
So now we have an issue where everyone whether you are buying or not buying you are affected.”
“We are very angry about this happening here because we don’t have electricity
but they don’t know how to buy electricity
Energy experts have warned that if people continue with illegal electricity connections
it poses a threat to the already overstretched power grid
Senzo Nyundu has confirmed that many consumers buy electricity tokens from unauthorised vendors
SAPS members will continue to monitor developments in Tekwane South
“Police were attacked while they were working with Eskom offering protection and no one has been arrested so far
But the police are still at Tekwane south monitoring the situation,” says Col Jabu Ndubane
The audit will be extended to other areas to root out those who steal from the power utility

The department spokesperson Bongani Dhlamini says the contractor has so far started with excavations and concrete work as part of the engineer’s timeline.

The bridge on the D2296 Road in Tekwane South was washed away by the raging water following the heavy rainfall caused by Tropical Storm Eloise earlier this year
The bridge collapsed on February 5 and has since never been repaired
According to the Department of Community Safety
the accident that had claimed the life of one person
“Preliminary reports at our disposal suggests that a bakkie with five occupants was travelling towards Tekwane South
and when they approached the damaged bridge they drove straight over into the bottom of it
we don’t know if the driver wasn’t aware that the bridge had collapsed,” said Moeti
“Four people were rescued and rushed to hospital
The fifth person could not be accounted for for the better part of Sunday night
His lifeless body was only discovered on Monday morning
buried underneath water and rubble,” he continued
Moeti said a case of culpable homicide has been opened and the police are investigating
This is not the first incident to happen here
leaving one person badly injured and his vehicle beyond repair
told Lowvelder Express that a service provider has already been appointed to start repairs on the bridge
The former acting DG in the Office of the Premier
visited the bridge and promised to work with all speed to repair the bridge
“We understand what has happened here and it is important for us as officials to move with speed to assess the damage
I am happy that the Department of Public Works
the City of Mbombela and the Ehlanzeni District Municipality are here to help us
“We must quickly present a detailed report to the executive to declare the situation or state of affairs as a disastrous one,” said Nyoni

The bridge between Tekwane South and eNtokozweni leading to KaNyamazane has totally collapsed
The Lowvelder and its sister papers
reported early in the week that a sinkhole had developed on this bridge as a result of the heavy rainfall in the area
this sinkhole has led to the bridge totally collapsing
leaving motorists and pedestrians stranded
First to arrive at the scene was the ward councillor
who quickly alerted the police and authorities at the City of Mbombela Local Municipality
“I am still in shock but relieved that no one was hurt when the bridge collapsed
I am just worried about the people who own houses near the stream that separate these two townships,” said Mashaba
He urged motorists and pedestrians alike to avoid using this road
Earlier this week Tekwane South and eNtokozweni community members took to the streets
calling for the City of Mbombela to repair the sinkhole
they predicted that the hole would sink further and the bridge collapse

Work to repair storm-damaged houses in KaNyamazane, Tekwane South and Ntokozweni is underway.
This follows a week-long protest where residents took to the streets protesting against the delay in fixing their storm-damaged houses.
The department of Human Settlements in Mpumalanga says meetings with contractors have yielded positive results and they have agreed on rates and payable amounts per house.
Human Settlements spokesperson Freddy Ngobe says they have agreed that the damage on the various houses vary and costs allocated to each house will differ.
The City of Mbombela in Mpumalanga has warned motorists using the KaNyamazane road to avoid using the makeshift bridge that was erected by the community
The original bridge collapsed during the heavy rains early this month
The City of Mbombela says the makeshift bridge is not safe to use. Roads, houses, and bridges were damaged after the heavy rains that wreaked havoc in the Mpumalanga Lowveld
One of the busiest roads that connects Kanyamazane township and other villages had its bridge washed away forcing motorists to use an alternative route
The residents of Tekwane South and Entokozweni took a decision to erect a makeshift bridge to ease the delays on the N4
One of the young people who played a role in erecting the bridge is Cayous Shabangu
“We decided that we should come here and assist these people so that they can access the road
although there are other people that are going to work and others are going to school
The main purpose there is a high unemployment rate
Then we tried to get people so that they can do something everyday.”
Motorists allege that the alternative route on the N4 toll road is time-consuming
“It is time efficient unlike on the N4 because sometimes you just want to come here
but then the route you have to take is longer than this one
Find someone to fix this place,” says one of the motorists
the City of Mbombela is still planning to erect a temporary bridge
“We appreciate the initiative of the community
we want to appeal that precaution must be taken
That stretch of the road is actually a provincial road
we needed to engage with the province for the designs even of a bypass
We have since received the designs of the bypass
We needed to follow legislation in procuring services for such and the process has already started
It is unfortunate that it had to take long
but we could not jump that process,” says City of Mbombela Municipal
The residents of Tekwane South feel that the municipality is dragging its feet in erecting a new bridge
“That bridge is helpful because we can move in and out of the places
if the people from Mbombela especially … the spokesperson is saying that the bridge is not safe … what are they doing so that it can show that they do care for the community
It (the municipality) does not care for the community,” says one of the community leaders
Beneficiaries of a housing project next to Tekwane South outside Mbombela in Mpumalanga are calling on government to allocate the houses
More than 100 units of the more than 200 housing project were completed in 2019
The beneficiaries claim that they have been renting rooms for years now
Beneficiaries of the housing project are concerned about the delay in handing over of the houses
The beneficiaries say some of them have no money to pay their landlords because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
They fear that the RDP houses might be vandalised even before they receive them
a father of two is one of the beneficiaries
He has been renting a room for several years
“We registered 8 years ago but still there is no feedback
We are struggling a lot here in Tekwane South
The government must help us by providing the houses because we can see the houses are there but there is no information
Thulile Mavuso is unemployed and a mother of five young children
A Good Samaritan had offered her a house to live with her children for free for the past four years
the homeowner has now given her until the end of the month to vacate the house
I don’t know where to go because I am unemployed
some of my children are not attending school because of my situation.”
The Local Ward Councillor Joseph Mashaba says he is also in the dark as to why the houses have not been allocated to the beneficiaries
they are not even prepared to wait for water
I am trying to block them but the way they are coming anything can happen at any time.”
The City of Mbombela Municipality says the recent flooding in the area has contributed to the delay in handing over the houses
Spokesperson for the City of Mbombela Joseph Ngala explains
“The problem the people are not taking occupation of the houses currently is due to the recent disasters
the pipeline that was dedicated to that new settlement was washed away but what we are doing as the government we are building a bypass in the next two to three weeks so that water goes direct to the houses
It is in our interest that people take occupation of the houses before they are vandalised.”
the spokesperson for the Provincial Department of Human Settlement
Freddy Ngobe had this to say about the housing project
“What is proving difficult now is that the water pressure is not enough to go through the water household
there has been a meeting undertaken between the two institutions
we are expecting a technical report that will advise on how to best deal with the problem and we are hoping that after all that is done
will be able to supply the water to the houses and the people can move in because the houses are done.”
the province has a 250 0000 housing backlog
