JOHANNESBURG - Pupils who matriculated at Thubelihle High School in Jabavu, Soweto said that infrastructure challenges negatively impacted their studies in 2024.
The school is made up of mobile units that were erected when the cohort began high school in 2020.
Some learners told EWN that at times, classes would be conducted under a tree due to unbearably high temperatures in the mobile units.
Only one of the school’s blocks is currently under construction while the rest consists of mobile units.
One pupil, Sandile Mthethwa, said that the infrastructure was not the only issue they had to contend with, saying there was a time when they did not have tables or chairs.
Although he passed his matric year, he said that some of his peers were negatively impacted by having to learn outside the classroom.
"We usually go to the playground or just find a place where there’s shade, then we settle there and we study and then in winter but obvious some of the learners were struggling and they were complaining of the temperature of the mobile, so we had to study outside for sunlight."
He said he hopes the department can intervene to better the schooling conditions for those who remain.

But they have also monitored him while playing for the national team and they made their decision to bring him on board

A second insider informed the Siya crew that despite Kaizer Chiefs' initial interest, they neither pursued Mavuso nor made official contact thereafter.
"I really think Chiefs have lost out on this player. Thubelihle (Mavuso) is a very good midfielder and he could have fitted very well at Chiefs but that is how football is. You win some, you lose some. Magesi have gained a very good player and I don't think he will stay much longer there as well," the second insider observed.
Mavuso has already featured for the eSwatini national team, playing in a few international matches.
Soccer Laduma contacted Magesi for comment but received no response at the time of publication.

Soweto after parents complained about the state of the infrastructure at the school
Image: Penwell Dlamini Learning was disrupted at Thubelihle High school in Jabavu
on Thursday morning after parents shut the school
demanding that the Gauteng department of education addresses the issue of poor infrastructure
Members of the school governing body (SGB) told Sowetan that the school has been in a bad state over the past five years
“Yesterday [Wednesday] there was a meeting between the principal and the parents of Grade 12 learners
That is when the parents expressed their anger that the school has been in a bad state for five years now
As parents we feel we need to act and take up this issue
“As the SGB we’ve submitted a letter to the office of the MEC [Panyaza Lesufi]
We also sent an email expressing our dissatisfaction about the conditions of the school but no action has been taken,” said Brenda Mfazi

The school which is situated next to an old church has an old dilapidated block with a zinc roof that is falling apart
Parents fear that the roof may be blown away by the wind and harm the children
The school has an agreement with the church to accommodate Grade 12 pupils at the building
Mobile classes that have been provided by the department have broken windows and the wooden floors have holes
Toilets are broken with water all over the floor
“We are the only school in Soweto that is still using the rotational system
We want the MEC to come and meet us to address our concerns,” Mfazi said

Another SGB member, Zukile Buda, said the department started the project of refurbishing the old classrooms in 2019 and only six classrooms were upgraded.
“Even those classrooms have not been fully completed. It is really frustrating for us as parents,” Buda said.
Pupils who spoke to Sowetan said learning inside the mobile classes is difficult.
“These classes are extremely cold now that it is winter. It is difficult to concentrate when we are taught. When it rains, the rain comes in because the windows are broken. It is really unacceptable for us to be expected to learn under such conditions,” said one grade 10 pupil.
Despite the poor infrastructure, Thubelihle High has been able to do well in its results, achieving a 97.8 % matric pass rate last year, and 88% and 91% in the previous years.
Sowetan has sent questions to the Gauteng department of education on the issues raised by the parents.

Our heroes this week are the brave teachers at Thubelihle Intermediate school in Soweto who contacted Corruption Watch at the beginning of this year to report appalling financial governance at their school
which was robbing learners of their Constitutional right to a quality education
Corruption Watch investigated the allegations and commissioned a forensic probe into the school’s financial affairs. The result was a damning report detailing grave fraud and misconduct by the principal and ex-school governing body head. Read the full article here
The district office of Gauteng’s education department has now recognised this
For their vigilance and proactivity in fighting such gross abuse of public resources
these educators at Thubelihle have earned the honour of heroes for the week
When the teachers approached Corruption Watch
they expressed how they were being undermined by the principal
and former school governing body (SGB) chair Isaac Ngwenya
“We are continuously told that our place is in the classroom
that’s where we should focus our attention,” they said
“Every time we ask the principal for stationery and other learning material
she always says that the school has no money
We find this statement unacceptable because there is nothing to show for what the money was spent on.”
The teachers told Corruption Watch that their troubles with the principal started about a year ago
when they asked the principal to renovate the school buildings and install new windows and doors
“How can you teach children when they are shivering inside a classroom?” asked one teacher
The principal told the teachers the school had no money to fix the doors and windows
and that’s when they started questioning its financial affairs
They were particularly interested in how the school’s budget was being spent and where donations from Norway
Once Corruption Watch had completed its investigation and the commissioned forensic-report findings were made known
the district office of the Gauteng education department contacted Corruption Watch offering to assist in normalising the school
Corruption Watch felt duty-bound to hand a copy of the forensic report to the district office to take swift action
We devoted significant resources to investigating these allegations,” said Corruption Watch’s executive director David Lewis
“While we would not be able to repeat this in respect of all allegations of schools corruption made to us
learners and parents could themselves ensure that school resources are spent for advancing education rather than for the private gratification of a few people.”
the teachers were delighted at the findings of the forensic report
saying they were thrilled that Corruption Watch had managed to find concrete proof of financial misconduct at the school
They could no longer sit and watch as their school “was going down to the dogs”
“Our learners have suffered enough over the years because of this principal and it is high time we stand up as teachers and do something about it,” added one

Mpisi has not allowed the condition or insults to limit his ambitions. He says were it not for the condition, he would not have become the perfectionist that he is today.
Mpisi, from Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, got seven distinctions in Grade 12. He is now a second-year LLB student at the University of Pretoria.
He says the discrimination he experienced since childhood has made him a better person.
Being called names encouraged him to write his autobiography, called 'Talkative Skin'.
The book, which takes the reader on the journey of Mpisi's life and challenges, is due to be released early next year.
Mpisi believes that one has to be a strong and motivated person to beat the odds. He says the biggest challenge is myths about people with albinism.
"I always say all of us are victims of discrimination - from the cradle to the grave.
"The condition has made me examine my own prejudices. I don't allow for mistakes because we are always judged because of the colour of our skin.
"From childhood I have experienced so much discrimination. Teachers and students used to give me attitude, but I never cared because my parents loved me. Whatever they said motivated me."
Mpisi says: "If we do not respect ourselves no one else will."
He says he hopes the book will also debunk the myths about albinism. Myths such as albinos do not die like other people but just disappear and that their blood is not red but blue.
"We die like everyone else," he says.

one player they were targeting who is both young and experienced is Thubelihle Mavuso

but could now be heading to Magesi FC insead

He is a very skilful young player who will benefit the club if they use him in the right way
It’s a very good signing for Magesi at this stage,” said one source on Dikwena beat Chiefs to Mavuso
A second source claims Chiefs did not follow up after declaring interest in Mavuso.
“I really think Chiefs have lost out on this player
Thubelihle (Mavuso) is a very good midfielder and he could have fitted very well at Chiefs but that is how football is
Magesi have gained a very good player and I don’t think he will stay much longer there as well,” said the source to the same publication.
