THOHOYANDOU– Tshitereke Baldwin Matibe has retained his position as Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Vhembe Region, following a high-stakes in 9th ANC Vhembe regional elective conference held on Sunday, 05 May 2025 at Kalahari Water Front in Thohoyandou.
The new leadership collective will serve for the next three years, with Miyelani Mabanana Chauke elected as Deputy Chairperson.

Matibe’s re-election comes after a tense build-up to the conference, which was nearly halted by urgent court applications.
Members of the ANC Vhembe Regional Task Team (RTT) lodged two separate legal bids to interdict the regional conference, claiming the preparations for the event violated the ANC’s revised national guidelines.
Specifically, they objected to the decision allowing each branch to send five delegates to verify nominations.
However, the Thohoyandou High Court struck both applications off the roll — one with legal costs, including counsel fees. The rulings cleared the way for the conference to proceed, following a directive from ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula.
“The application to interdict the ANC Vhembe Regional Conference has been struck off the roll with costs. The conference shall proceed as scheduled,” the court confirmed on 04 May 2025.
The conference was attended by ANC delegates from across the Vhembe District, including representatives from the region’s five
subregions: Thulamela, Makhado, Musina, Collins Chabane, and the Vuwani area.
Matibe’s re-election marks a significant victory for his faction and reinforces his influence in the region. His leadership will be critical as the ANC Vhembe Region prepares for upcoming local government responsibilities and works toward consolidating political unity ahead of the 2026 municipal elections.
The ANC Limpopo Provincial Executive Committee has welcomed the outcome and called for unity within the organization.

Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Tshitereke Matibe has warned South Africans against the practice of registering businesses only to lease them out to foreign nationals who do not qualify to operate a business in the country.
Matibe was speaking at the launch of the Limpopo Spaza Shop Registration Drive at the Ngoako Ramathlodi sports complex in Seshego today.
All spaza shops and food handling facilities have been mandated to register their businesses within the 21-day period announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in response to the recent spate of reported cases of food-borne illnesses and deaths across the country.
The directive mandates that foreign nationals must have business permits and a minimum capital of R5 million to open a business in the country.
Matibe says while they have observed a low turnout of people coming out to register their businesses, others are registering only to lease them out to foreign nationals, especially the illegal ones who do not qualify.

According to deputy speaker in the Limpopo Legislature Jerry Ndou, Matibe’s appointment follows the resignation of ANC Norman Mashabane regional secretary Goodman Mtileni, whose current regional position doesn’t allow him to remain an MPL.
