TZANEEN – Traffic is heavily affected on the R36 road following a horrific crash that occurred earlier today near the Ledzee turn-off, just before the Lafarge area outside Tzaneen.
The accident involved two vehicles, with one of them coming to a stop in the middle of the road, causing a complete blockage of traffic flow in the area.
Emergency services are currently on the scene attending to the situation. At this stage, details regarding the number of casualties or injuries remain unclear.
Motorists traveling on this route are urged to be patient and exercise caution, as traffic officers have temporarily closed the affected section while clearing operations continue.
Road users are advised to consider alternative routes to avoid long delays.

Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Finance at the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality, Michael Makgoba says the rehabilitation of the Old Checkers Building in the Tzaneen CBD, will not only improve revenue collection, but will also bring much-needed job opportunities.
The economic hub, which has since been sold to a new owner, was left abandoned for years and the previous owner was owing the municipality R35 million in rates and taxes, before it was later declared insolvent by the high court in 2023, following an application by the municipality to recoup the money.
The insolvency prevented the municipality from recouping the money and it was later put on auction in April 2024 and the new owner has since asked the municipality to set aside a portion of the debt to allow him to register the building.
Business owners near the building have previous raised concerns that the abandoned premises were used for illegal purposes and threatened not only to their businesses but the economic activities in the area as well.
A special council sitting on Thursday has resolved to reduce the R35 million debt to R6.5 million as requested by the new owner and presenting the report in council, Makgoba detailed other recommendations outlined in the report.

POLOKWANE – A 68-year-old pastor is expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 5, 2025, after being arrested for allegedly providing false information to the police regarding a staged hijacking.
According to Limpopo police, the pastor opened a case at Westenburg Police Station on May 2, claiming he was hijacked at gunpoint on April 11, 2025. He alleged that the incident occurred after he had picked up two unknown men while driving towards Polokwane in a Daihatsu Terios.
He further claimed the suspects hijacked the vehicle and that he later found it abandoned along the R37 road, stripped of its gearbox.
However, a thorough investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) revealed inconsistencies in the pastor’s statement.
Police established that on the day of the alleged hijacking, the pastor had actually experienced mechanical issueswith the vehicle and had called a tow truck to transport it to a car repair clinic in Lebowakgomo. He was accompanied by his driver at the time and had made a partial payment for gearbox repairs.
The investigation also found that the gearbox was stolen after the vehicle was already in the workshop, and there was no evidence of a hijacking.
When confronted with the findings, the pastor reportedly confessed that the hijacking had been fabricated. He was immediately arrested for defeating the ends of justice by providing false information to law enforcement.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the arrest and emphasized the seriousness of reporting false crimes.
“Lying to the police wastes valuable resources and delays investigations into actual crimes. This arrest sends a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated,” he said.
The case is still under investigation, and more charges could follow depending on the outcome.
The Greater Tzaneen Municipality has reassured residents that it will do its best to keep the lights on, amid a court order that threatens to leave thousands of households in the Tzaneen area without electricity for extended periods.
The order was obtained in March 2024 by farm owners who claim there has been no lease agreement between themselves and the municipality in relation to a sub-station erected on their property and are now threatening to evict the municipality.
The substation in question is used by the municipality to distribute electricity to various areas.
The sub-station was built before the current client purchased the farm in 1999.
The municipality says it had an agreement in place with the previous owner, who has passed on.
Legal representative Mpikanisi Mathebula of Letsela Nkondo Attorneys has made it clear that their clients are not willing to sell the land, with a lifetime servitude currently the only offer on the table.

POLOKWANE-The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning to the public about a growing online scam involving WhatsApp and fraudulent One-Time PINs (OTPs), which has left several victims with emptied bank accounts.
According to SAPS, scammers are targeting unsuspecting individuals by sending WhatsApp messages that appear to come from someone in the victim’s contact list.
The messages typically contain a request to participate in a quick survey or competition and then prompt the recipient to provide an OTP.
These OTPs are often generated by banking apps or digital platforms and are meant to verify transactions. Once the victim shares the OTP, scammers use it to gain access to their bank accounts and drain funds.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo explained, “Fraudsters are exploiting trust by using familiar contacts. Victims believe they’re helping a friend or family member, but instead, they’re giving cybercriminals direct access to their finances.”
Masondo emphasized that legitimate financial institutions will never ask customers to share OTPs via messaging apps. He also urged the public not to share personal banking information — such as bank card numbers, PINs, or login credentials — over electronic communication, especially with unknown sources.
“Be cautious. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always verify before you act,” Masondo added.
To report suspicious activity, members of the public can contact the police through the MySAPS App or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111. For cases of extortion or fraud, the National Anti-Corruption Hotline is available at 0800 911 011.
The SAPS continues to investigate and urges citizens to stay informed and alert to avoid falling victim to such scams.
TZANEEN-The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has raised alarm over the deteriorating condition of the D1350 road in Deerpark, calling on Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure MEC Ernest Rachoene to urgently intervene and provide clear timelines for its maintenance.
This follows an oversight inspection by DA Councillor Chrisma Bredenkamp, who found the road to be in a severely dilapidated state, riddled with large potholes and lacking proper upkeep for years.
Bredenkamp warned that the poor condition of the road poses a serious risk to motorists and pedestrians.
The D1350 road, which stretches from the Deerpark T-junction to Madumane via Morutji and the Madumane four-way, is a key route for workers, learners, and residents in the Greater Tzaneen and Greater Letaba municipalities.
Despite claims from the Greater Tzaneen Municipality and the Public Works Department that contractors have been appointed for its maintenance, the DA says there is little visible evidence of any work being done.
“Promises won’t fill the potholes,” the DA said, urging the department to act swiftly and ensure the road is made safe and accessible for all who depend on it daily.
The Democratic Alliance in the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality is demanding accountability from the municipality given the amount of money spent in outsourcing security guards who still fail to keep employees safe.
DA councillor in the municipality Chrisma Bredenkamp says they seek answers on whether the R30 million is truly required to secure the municipality’s assets.
Bredenkamp says they demand answers on whether the Service Level Agreements entered into with two security companies providing security services align with their municipality’s actual security needs and how the contractors’ performance is monitored and controlled to ensure an effective and efficient spent.
Municipal spokesperson Neville Ndlala says the municipality needs accurate security to protect its assets and there are areas that are still not covered and as such, the R30 million used yearly for security is not enough.
Ndlala says they have about 109 security guards who work an 8 hour shifts daily, and they are still not enough.
He has refuted claims that there was a municipal employee who was held hostage while there was security in the building, saying community members simply came to the offices to raise concerns after their electricity was disconnected.
The Greater Tzaneen municipality has been given until next week Wednesday to consider a final settlement proposal in relation to an ongoing legal battle over the land that’s housing an electrical substation.
Officials from the municipality and Letsela Nkondo Attorneys, which represents the owner of the property where the substation is erected, met last week in efforts to halt the execution of an eviction order against the municipality.
The landowner was granted the court order in March 2024, claiming the municipality has been occupying the property unlawfully.
Attorney at Letsela Nkondo Attorneys, Mpikanisi Mathebula has declined to disclose the contents of their final settlement offer but confirmed giving the municipal officials more time to discuss the proposal.
Mathebula says their next course of action will be determined by the response they receive from the municipality but has warned that should the feedback be unsatisfactory, they will enforce the eviction order – a move that threatens to leave thousands of households in the Tzaneen area without electricity.

Residents of the Nkowankowa township outside Tzaneen in Limpopo have been blockading streets with burning tyres since last night over power and water outages
They are demanding an end to Eskom’s load reduction and the Mopani District Municipality’s water supply disruptions
The Tzaneen Municipality has urged residents to stop the protest saying it is engaging both Eskom and the Mopani District Municipality
Several areas near Tzaneen in Limpopo are experiencing an outbreak of water-borne disease
The parasitic infection has been detected in areas such as Nkowankowa
More than 140 learners from Malwandla Primary School were diagnosed with the condition
The health department says the children were treated with anti-parasitic medication
Water supply at communities such as Petanenge
Sasekani and Zangoma villages is inconsistent
There has been an increase in cases of the Bilharzia water parasite in the broader area
The hardest hit since the re-emergence of the disease are schools neighbouring the Letsitele River
Health department spokesperson Neil Shikwambana is calling on parents to have their children tested immediately if they show symptoms
“All these villages are actually nearby
That means our scope of testing and screening will then increase to look at school children in those areas
But to make our lives easier and also to make the process much simpler
we call on parents and guardians to actually present their children to their nearest healthcare facilities for screening as soon as they see any symptoms or anything that raises suspicions to the effect that the children would be having Bilharzia
Because school has programmes … it might actually take a little bit of time due to resources
But it is easier to get children tested in the nearby facility,” adds Shikwambana
Some desperate residents fetch water from rivers and streams that are contaminated.
They say that they have been without water supply for years.
“We don’t have water. It’s been a long time. People of Petanenge don’t have access to water. Contractors who were hired to fix pipe lines have not fixed the problem. It’s been years. There’s a disease that has been discovered from the school learners. They have Bilharzia. This prompted the municipality to supply us with water using the tankers,” says one resident.
“We don’t have water. When you want to cook, we wake up early in the morning, we book the water and cook. School learners are sick at Malwandla primary, they said 145 have been affected. They said they have Bilharzia. They took more samples and we haven’t got the results. We don’t have water at wards 24 in Petanenge. It’s Petanenge, mohlaba, Sasekani and Zangoma,” says another resident.
Doctors at Letaba Hospital have treated learners who tested positive with the condition recently.
Pediatrician specialist Dr Lehumo Makwela says some of the common symptoms include abdominal pain and a urinary tract infection.
“The organ that is affected the most by this parasite is the urinary tract, the bladder, the kidney and that is where you get most of the complications. We see it varies; it can cause renal failure which is the kidney not functioning the way in which it should,” says Makwela.
“It has also been associated with the development of cancer of the bladder. So, those are some of the complications. Most of the patients we see present with passing blood in the urine,” adds Dr Makwela.
Meanwhile, the Mopani District Municipality spokesperson Odas Ngobeni says they have conducted tests in the water source at Malwandla Primary School.
“The results from the water sample taken from a borehole at Malwandla Primary School came back negative, which has been our stance all along that the disease can not be from underground water or any of bulk water supply network,” says Ngobeni.
Communities have been advised to refrain from swimming in rivers or streams or consuming water suspected to be contaminated.-Reporting by Avhapfani Munyai

HOEDSPRUIT – Tragedy struck the R531 near Hoedspruit in Maruleng Local municipality on the morning of Tuesday, 29 April 2025, as two separate vehicle crashes claimed three lives and left 63 people injured.
The first accident occurred at approximately 06:30 near Kampersrus village. A Hyundai light delivery vehicle, reportedly transporting workers, overturned after the driver lost control.
One person was declared dead at the scene, and 23 others sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Just over an hour later, at around 08:00 near Marepe Lodge, a second crash took place involving a heavy motor vehicle and a tractor.
According to initial reports, the truck was attempting to overtake when it collided with the tractor. Two people tragically lost their lives, and 40 others were injured. Both vehicles were also transporting workers at the time.
Emergency services responded swiftly to both scenes, and the injured were transported to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact causes of the crashes.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish those injured a full and speedy recovery.
Eskom in Limpopo has made it clear to residents in the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality that it remains committed to imposing a R6000 penalty for areas that have connected electricity illegally, as well as load reduction for non-payment of services, despite threats of protest action.
Residents in Nkonwankwa have threated to march to Eskom offices in Polokwane to hand over a memorandum, which demands clarity on the continued load reduction in Nkowankowa Section A, Dan village, and Lenyenye Town among others, as well as a R6000 fine imposed for non-payment of services.
Eskom provincial spokesperson Matshidiso Phaladi says the growing culture of non-payment and illegal connections in the municipality has forced Eskom to implement load reduction and impose a R6000 penalty for illegal connection, which is non-negotiable.
With the 24th November deadline for users to update their prepaid meters fast approaching, Phaladi says those who continue to connect electricity illegally could be completely switched off, as some have already been switched off.
CENTURION – Two bodies believed to be those of the three missing South African Police Service (SAPS) members have been recovered from the Hennops River in Centurion, Gauteng.
The officers, who were reportedly en route to Polokwane from the Free State on a deployment last week, went missing under mysterious circumstances. They were last seen in the early hours of Wednesday, 23 April 2025, travelling in a white VW Polo.
Search and rescue teams, assisted by drone operators, located a submerged vehicle believed to match the description of the missing officers’ car. However, it has since been confirmed by sources on scene that the vehicle found in the river is not the white VW Polo the trio was travelling in.
Despite this, two bodies have been recovered and positively identified as the missing police constables, both of whom were reportedly attached to the Free State Crime Intelligence Unit.
The search continues for the third officer, a female, who is still unaccounted for. Police teams are now intensifying their efforts along the Hennops River as part of the recovery mission.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased officers pending family notification.
This incident has cast a shadow over SAPS as questions arise regarding the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and how the vehicle ended up in the river.
Further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.
The Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality has sought to assure residents that the planned12-hour power shutdown by Eskom has got nothing to do with recent events related to electricity meter upgrades.
The shutdown by Eskom will take place on 1st December and will affect residents in Lenyenye, Nkowankowa, Dan village, and all surrounding areas as part of maintenance of its infrastructure which has been severely affected by illegal connections.
This has sparked concern from communities who fear that the shutdown may have something to do with the failure to re-code meters by many residents, particularly those who have not been paying for electricity.
But municipal spokesperson Neville Ndlala says Eskom has emphasized the need to maintain its infrastructure, particularly transformers, which have been badly damaged by illegal connections and as such, it is forced to implement longer hours of power interruptions.
He adds that from this week, they will be assisting over 80 000 households who are zero buyers to upgrade prepaid meters.
Communities in the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality have called for joint effort among various stakeholders to deal with increasing levels of crime since the start of the 2024 festive season.
There’s been an increase in incidents of gangsterism in Dan village, Nkowankowa, Lusaka villages and surrounding areas, which have led to residents being robbed of their belongings and even reports of a violent attack leading to death.
While a meeting is expected to be held on Thursday with Ritavi police and stakeholders to discuss these challenges, community leader in Dan Village Collen Manyike says they no longer have confidence in councillors and police capabilities in addressing this scourge.
Manyike says they need the involvement of various other stakeholders including the municipality, to provide a budget for the formation of effective community policing structures in all communities.
He says one of the main contributors of the high crime levels is the high youth unemployment rate, adding that urgent intervention is needed.
Some residents in Tzaneen and surrounding areas in Limpopo say government must resuscitate old mines to create job opportunities and stop illegal mining.
They were speaking after the task team established to fight illegal mining, Operation Vala Umgodi conducted a search at the old Modipa gold mine outside Tzaneen.
This is one of the 12 non-operational mines that have been identified as potential hotspots for illegal mining.
Members of the community say reopening old mines would also reduce unemployment in the province.
“Reopening these mines would create jobs and curb illegal operations, addressing the desperation and poverty driving individuals to illegal activities. We would greatly appreciate it if the mines could be reopened, providing employment opportunities for the community. This would make a significant positive impact.”
“We urge the government to reconsider reopening the closed mines, as young people like us are struggling to find employment and roaming the streets. The revival of these mines would provide much-needed job opportunities and help alleviate unemployment in our community.”

The Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality has refuted allegations by a group of residents in Nkowankowa, regarding the employment of Expanded Public Works Programme workers that are currently working on two projects.
Last week, the group raised a dispute around the projects valued at a total R2 million, one being the construction of an ablution block and storage facility at the driving license testing ground and the other, the renovation of home affairs offices.
The group is alleging that the municipality is not following proper procedures in hiring workers, claiming that the municipality only employs its own preferred people.
But municipal spokesperson Neville Ndlala says the allegations are just part of the group’s concerted efforts to discredit the municipality by continuously making baseless accusations on service delivery issues and even mobilizing community members.
Ndlala says the municipality has a database which can be accessed on their website and social media platforms, where community members can register for EPWP opportunities and proper processes are followed when selecting suitable candidates.
Patience Mlengana is proud of the support she has received which has enabled her to operate a sustainable poultry enterprise
A cash injection boost through the Industrial Development Cooperation (IDC) and the department of trade
industry and competition (DTIC) has enabled a poultry farmer in Tzaneen
Limpopo to reach her goals and take the family business to greater heights
The funding Patience Mlengana received from the DTIC was made with the key intention of implementing some of the aspects of the Poultry Master Plan
which were evident through her farming operations at PMM Agri
“The objectives of the plan include stimulating investment
and the establishment of black contract growers
The funding has enabled her to grow the business exponentially from producing 40 000 chickens per cycle to 350 000 per cycle
“The PMM Agri is one of the fourteen companies that have been supported through the Agro Industry Fund
More than 850 jobs have been created in the process,” the department stated
Mlengana said taking over the business from her parents was not easy but she had to step in to keep the legacy of the family and many livelihoods that depend on the farming operations
Her mission began with a loan from a commercial bank to add three chicken houses to the one her parents had built
The IDC approved the construction of the three additional chicken houses
“It really makes me happy to have managed to grow my parents’ business from 40 000 chickens per cycle to 350 000
“Even more fulfilling is the fact that this business is impacting the lives of the local people positively
by creating employment for them and changing their lives for the better
We are providing jobs to 15 permanent and 30 temporary employees,” she said
Mlengana said it is also encouraging when the government supports transformation
She currently supplies Bush Valley Abattoir
“There will always be room for growth in the broiler chicken industry in South Africa
we are importing more than 500 000 tons of chicken meat per year
The support that is provided as part of the Poultry Master Plan helps us contribute to increasing production in order to decrease imports
the implementation of the plan needs to ensure that black businesspeople are assisted to occupy the entire value chain of the industry from parent stock
She said she has started expanding the business by adding 18 more chicken houses
This will take her production to more than 1.2 million chickens per cycle
She is happy that an increase in production will translate into more jobs

‘We bring you the latest Garden Route, Hessequa, Karoo news’
We are gathered here to bid farewell to one of the most illustrious sons of our motherland South Africa. Our hearts are heavy because of this great loss. But we are also here to celebrate a life well led. A life that is replete with many lessons
On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, I convey my deepest sympathies to the family of Tito Titus Mboweni on the loss of their father, brother and uncle.
I convey my sympathies to the leadership and the membership of the African National Congress – a movement he served with integrity, in exile, during the journey to democracy and beyond.
We have lost a respected leader, friend, comrade, teacher, mentor and compatriot.
He was known by many names to many different people:
Comrade Tito, Uncle Tito, Gov8, erstwhile National Breadwinner, unpaid impresario for Lucky Star, The Duke of Magoebaskloof.
He was larger than life because he led such a big life and touched the lives of many people.
He fraternised with heads of states and government such as Presidents and Prime Ministers.
He was on first name terms with central bankers around the world.
He was respected by leading economists, titans of business, labour leaders and ordinary people in our country.
Yet despite his stature and profile, he never lost the common touch. He had a gift to connect to people. He understood them and he had a way to make people feel special and made them have a sense that they mattered.
Governor 8 could relate to people from all walks of life. He was an empathetic man. He valued character over pedigree. And he was no cynic. He looked for the good in each person – and usually found it.
Tito taught us that public service is noble and necessary; that one can serve with integrity and hold true to the important values, like faith and family. He strongly believed that it was important to give back to the community and country in which one lived. He recognised that serving others enriched the servant’s soul. To me he was the shining star that shined brightest in a maze of a dark period in the life of our country we called state capture.
He had already left public service when i knocked on his door asking him if he would return to public service as Minister of Finance.
I just said Cde Tito your country needs you to do another tour of service.
He agonised about giving up the material value he was building for himself and his family. But after a while he came through for the people of South Africa and agreed to serve as Minister of Finance.
Memory and truth are great virtues. The memories that people have shared of Cde Tito over the last few days tell us much about his personality and the relationships that he formed.
Some of the finest tributes have come from our nation’s journalists.
We hear of a senior Minister who was always accessible, who pored over every detail in their stories, and who challenged and sparred with them.
We remember how he would dramatically bring a potted Aloe Ferox plant to his Budget speeches to illustrate his approach to fiscal discipline.
Through the Aloe Ferox he sought to illustrate that like our country, the Aloe Ferox survives and thrives when times are tough.
We continue to admire how he always sought to demystify matters of the economy for our citizens.
He insisted that government must communicate with the people on how the economic decisions we take impact their lives.
We will remember his aversion to a flashy lifestyle.
He wasn’t just an avowed enemy of corruption throughout his life in public office.
In time we will look back at those social media posts of Tito defending his infamous brown shoes that had seen better days.
We may then read what was perhaps the deeper, intended meaning:
That when you hold public office, when you are entrusted with leadership, you must be of the people. Not standing above them, not looking down on them.
For Tito, when you hold public office, perception matters.
Tito’s endearing self-deprecation, affability and humility belied an illustrious career.
His remarkable life spans the history of our democratic journey.
He was an activist in the struggle against apartheid.
He played a formative role in the development of the ANC’s economic policy as it prepared to govern.
As the first Minister of Labour of our democratic government, he oversaw the construction of a new labour regime that would reflect the values of a democratic constitution.
During his tenure, groundbreaking labour laws were passed.
He introduced legislation on collective bargaining, basic conditions of employment, labour relations, health and safety, and employment equity that have served our country well over nearly three decades.
These laws fundamentally transformed the labour relations landscape.
They restored dignity to the workers of this country that had been denied them for centuries.
He was the first black governor of the South African Reserve Bank.
He introduced inflation targeting and convened the bank’s first monetary policy committee meetings.
To keep the citizenry abreast on economic policy matters, he introduced a televised monetary policy statement.
Later, as Minister of Finance, he undertook one of the most difficult of roles.
It requires an ability to take difficult decisions and to withstand extreme pressure.
In a country such as ours, it also requires someone with a keen understanding of the imperatives of development, social transformation and redress.
All of which must at the same time be matched by pragmatism.
He often had to tell his cabinet colleagues that there was no money for their ambitious plans.
As National Breadwinner, it was up to Tito to put things plainly.
As a country, we are better off for his steadfastness and resilience.
He championed economic transformation, just as he championed fiscal discipline and evidence-based policymaking.
Through his leadership, the National Treasury steered our economy through an extremely difficult period.
He became Minister of Finance when the country was emerging from the era of state capture and as the country had to confront a devastating global pandemic.
With him at the helm, the National Treasury set itself on a collaborative course with the rest of government to restore policy and regulatory certainty.
This would culminate in the establishment of Operation Vulindlela, a joint initiative of the Presidency and National Treasury to speed up the structural reform process.
Since it was established, the reforms driven through Operation Vulindlela have made considerable headway towards resolving challenges in our economy.
What many will remember but perhaps others do not know, is that Tito was instrumental in developing the strategy underpinning the reforms we needed to embark upon in the network industries
His insights and initiatives continue to have a very real, material impact on our economy and on the lives of South Africans.
It is gratifying that Tito got to see the impact of his hard work during his lifetime.
He got to see how the lives and conditions of workers were improved.
He was able to see how safeguarding the independence and mandate of the South African Reserve Bank works.
He was able to see how reinforcing prudent and transformational fiscal policy is beneficial to a country.
On initiating far-reaching structural reforms.
The Bureau of Economic Research, which Tito often collaborated with, has said it is difficult to think of any other economic policymaker who has left such an enduring legacy.
Tito was particularly popular with the younger generation.
Who, but Uncle Tito, could have a chart-topping rap song titled with his name?
Who, but the Duke of Magoebaskloof, could share tips with 1.5 million followers on the best curry powder to cook a chicken with and impart economic education at the same time?
Our younger generation, many of his social media followers, have a delightful phrase: understanding the assignment.
Loosely deciphered it means knowing what must be done and doing it well.
Cde Tito and I shared a deep passion for trout fly fishing and would spend time talking about the skill of casting a line to catch a brown trout and compare that to prudent macro-economic policy management.
I kept fearing that on Budget Day we would bring a dead trout fish to the National Assembly and talk about it.
To the Mboweni family, you are all having to deal with the raw heartache from his death, but we want you to know that we are all feeling the pain together with you.
Tito’s departure has left a void in our hearts.
Comrade Tito, you understood the assignment.
As we bid you farewell my brother, my comrade, my fellow fly fisherman, your legacy is of a successful transformation from a freedom fighter to a businessman, central banker and politician.
You were a true servant leader, admired and loved by the people.
You delivered on what was required of you.
You acquitted yourself with dignity and with honour in the ANC, in government and beyond.
You depart this world with that dignity, that honour and that reputation intact.
You did not disgrace or betray your movement or the people of this country.
This is the most we can hope for as leaders. This is the highest we should aspire to.
Like Tito, we should strive to be true servant leaders.
We should each aspire to do everything that our country asks of us.
Executive Mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Mr Pule Shayi;
Executive Mayor of Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality, Mr. Gerson Molapisane;
Deputy Ministers of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr. Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe and Dr. Dickson Masemola;
MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs, Mr. Basikopo Makamu;
MEC for Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure, Mr. Tony Rachoene;
His Majesty, Mailausumbwa Thovhele Vho-Kennedy Tshivhase;
Ba-Phalaborwa Ba Shai Chieftaincy, Kgoshigadi Shai;
Chairperson of Limpopo Provincial House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, Hosi Penny Ngove;
President of Contralesa, Kgosi Mathupa Mokoena;
I visited Nandoni Dam and the raw water pump station to witness the water flowing from Nandoni Dam to Giyani via the 40.5km pipeline. Then, I went to the water canal at Xikukwani village, where the raw water from Nandoni is discharged before flowing to Nsami Dam and the water treatment plant.
I am pleased with the progress but want to see the speed of execution to ensure reliable water services to communities.
In this regard I have instructed the Minister and technical team of DGs that we must ensure that there are no disruptions on the project and critically ensure that we realise this project in record time. I have also engaged the Minister of Finance to available funding for the Department of Water and Sanitation so that we can complete the project without any challenges.
I am raising this because I met with the President and Leadership of the New Development Bank in Cape Town a few weeks and they have committed to fund infrastructure projects specially water related infrastructure projects in our country.
I will assess progress in three months, and there will be consequences if there is no movement!
I am grateful to address you as we celebrate and pay tribute to Her Royal Highness, Hosi Dr N’waMitwa II, a trailblazer among the Vatsonga people and a beacon of female leadership in our country.
Equally significant is that the 16th anniversary of N’waMitwa Day unites vital aspects of our democratic society. It coincides with the conclusion of Women's Month and Heritage Month's observance. It demonstrates our progress in advancing the constitutional values of gender equality and non-sexism in the country.
Her Royal Highness, Hosi Dr. N'waMitwa II's accession to the throne symbolises resilience and progress in our ongoing journey to realise women's full potential in leadership roles. Her path inspires all, particularly the millions of South African women whose voices and contributions are essential in shaping our nation’s future.
In this regard, Hosi Dr. N'waMitwa, we recognise your impact in advocating for women's rights. You have been a living example of what you said during your acceptance speech for an honourary doctorate in 2020, when you said:
“We would stand on the threshold of a new beginning as a country if we shake the foundation of patriarchy and gender-based violence by reconstructing the gender-justice paradigm and expand circles of relations in which women are empowered, affirmed, and celebrated.”
We are proud that you have upended patriarchy by claiming your rightful place on the Valoyi royal throne. You have demonstrated to women that their role extends beyond the norm and they can assume leadership positions in society, performing equally or better than men.
What remains is that we must fight patriarchy and stand together as government and traditional leaders to root out the persistent inequalities and Gender-based Violence (GBV), which continue to erode social cohesion in South Africa.
In the embrace of our cherished traditions, let us not permit the darkness of violence to continue to exist, covered up in the guise of culture. Our African culture does not condone abuse; only wicked people exploit it to mistreat women, children and the vulnerable.
Under no circumstances should we ever permit these wicked elements within our society to exploit culture as a means of justifying the abuse of women and children.
This multi-sectoral council brings together the expertise of all stakeholders, including civil society, labour, and business, to strengthen national efforts to eliminate gender-based violence. It takes a more inclusive, focused, and well-resourced approach. Therefore, we urge you, as traditional leaders, to be part of this council and support our efforts to eradicate GBV across all sectors of society.
Together, we must protect and defend our children, youth, and women who are vulnerable to discrimination, violence, drug abuse, high suicide rates, prostitution, alcoholism, and other social ills associated with poverty.
Furthermore, we must address rural people's exclusion from communication and information exchange with the rest of the world as a result of limited access to information and communication technology services in rural communities.
In this regard, we have this year launched Phase 2 of SA Connect which is government’s effort to bridge the digital divide by increasing the connection speed to facilitate effective teaching and learning, e-health and access to government services in order to fast track service delivery by government.
The government is also moving quickly to handle the land issue, which, for many, remains a substantial hurdle. We must share the land equitably among those who work it.
Establishing community agriculture hubs supported by cooperatives in rural impoverished communities, regardless of whether they operate in the formal or informal sector, is a crucial step towards a comprehensive land reform process. These initiatives assist local people in generating income, ensuring food security and economic growth, thereby reducing inequality and fostering inclusive growth.
The preamble of the 1996 Constitution reminds us that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity, and calls upon us to heal past divisions and establish a society based on democratic values, social justice, and fundamental human rights.
In democratising the heritage landscape after 1994, it has thus been very important to recognise, re-humanise and celebrate the significance of our diverse living heritage, safeguard it for future generations, and harness it as the basis for social cohesion and nation building.
Therefore, N'waMitwa Day is not just a testament to our rich cultural heritage, but is also a reflection of the strides we have made in breaking barriers to achieve equality, unity, and social cohesion.
Hosi Dr N’wamitwa II, what truly stirs my spirit is your choice to honour this day alongside leaders from varied cultural realms, a testament to the beauty of our rich heritage and the vibrant tapestry of diversity. This is also a reminder of the value that women-leadership offers in embracing difference and prioritising inclusion. We truly honour you for your bold and sterling leadership in this regard.
In this joyful spirit, we must devote ourselves to fostering and conserving our collective memory as a people. Our history is unique, and it has inspired many nations to embrace unity and diversity, demonstrating that difference can be used for progress rather than devastation and separation.
N’waMitwa Day affords us an opportunity to reconnect with our roots, honour our ancestors, and pass on important cultural practices and values to the next generation.
Standing here witnessing a vibrant tapestry of colourful attire and the rhythm of our traditional dance ignites in me a fervent desire to protect and preserve our rich traditions, customs, and languages.
Hi khutaza n’wina Vatsonga, ku sirhelela ndhavuko lowu wo saseka na ndzhaka ya n’wina.
Tanihi mfumo, hi hoyozela Hosi Dr. Nwamitwa hi ku tsundzuka siku leri lembe na lembe, tani hi leswi ri tlangaka xiave xa nkoka eku hlayiseni ka ndzhaka ya ndhavuko.
We must also collaborate with the South African Heritage Resource Agency (SAHRA) to develop community skills and capacities to help identify and protect heritage resources.
Moreover, traditional leaders should facilitate the implementation of development proposals by assisting municipalities in building consensus regarding development. This is a critical in combating poverty and unemployment, as a significant portion of our population lives in rural areas where traditional leadership institutions are prevalent.
Since traditional leaders are closer to the people than municipal entities, they should be an integral part of the stakeholders' efforts to improve the local economy.
As the President has assigned me to promote social cohesion initiatives, with a particular focus on Tradition and Khoi-San Leaders, I pledge to work closely with you to bridge the divide between the government and your subjects.
In our fight against social ills, we must create a strong social compact that ensures intimate, friendly, cooperative, and peaceful working relationships and devise strategies to develop rural communities.
We want to partner with you to grow this community through various projects that will keep our youngsters off the streets. Since the first annual N'waMitwa Day in 2009, the Valoyi Traditional Authority has reportedly solicited a number of projects through social compacting, with support from the Department of Tourism and the Department of Arts and Culture.
Examples of these community development projects include the Valoyi Cultural Village, where we are celebrating today, and the adjacent Royal Khalanga Lodge, contributing to the fight against unemployment.
As a government, we want to see the same development in other rural areas. We would also like to see the development of new smart cities in rural areas to create new economic hubs that include retail, mixed-use residential, new lifestyle estates, high-quality office and business parks, and logistics. This dream can become a reality if we work together to create a conducive environment for investment in our communities.
The government is concerned about unequal service delivery in our communities. The president has delegated me to assist in the roll-out of the District Development Model through effective coordination of the different spheres of government. This will improve the functioning of municipalities and address community concerns.
The District Development Model enables all levels of government to effectively plan, budget, and implement projects and activities. This commitment and teamwork will benefit communities by enabling more integrated service delivery actions.
I look forward to collaborating with you to accelerate service delivery in your areas by identifying bottlenecks.
Despite challenges, we must appreciate that, since 1994, we have made significant progress in providing essential services such as housing, education, healthcare, and basic infrastructure.
* The percentage of households with electricity access has increased from 58% in 1996 to 94.7% in 2022.
* Housing conditions have improved, with almost 90% of South Africans staying in formal housing.
* Access to clean drinking water has also improved, with a decrease from 19.7% to 8.7% in 2022.
As we move forward, we must recognise that pursuing social cohesion is fundamentally about building a compact between the government and the governed. As Hosi Dr N'waMitwa has already laid the groundwork, we must collaborate to create a more equitable and united South Africa towards another 30 years of democracy.
Let us all recommit to the National Development Plan's goal of ending poverty and reducing inequality by 2030. This requires us to rely on each other's energies, expand an inclusive economy, develop capacities, and foster leadership and collaboration throughout society.
TZANEEN – A refrigerated truck loaded with frozen chicken was looted in broad daylight on Saturday morning at Claude Wheatley Street, near the Letaba TVET College four-way intersection (commonly known as the CTM four-way) in Tzaneen Cbd.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. after the truck reportedly broke down while en route to deliver chicken to outlets in the Tzaneen CBD and surrounding areas.
Within minutes, opportunistic looters descended on the vehicle. Eyewitnesses claim the looting lasted no more than 10 minutes, with dozens of people seen running away carrying boxes of frozen goods — believed to be chicken — from the back of the truck.
Video footage shared on social media shows chaotic scenes as people scrambled to grab what they could before police arrived at the scene.
Authorities have since responded, and police are currently on-site to assess the situation. No arrests have been confirmed yet.
