Large parts of Vanderbijlpark will most probably be left without power for quite some time after Monday night’s fire at a large substation in Curie Boulevard
The affected areas include the old part of Vanderbijlpark as well as the small holdings where approximately 12 000 families reside
It is likely that most of these families do not own generators and will be forced to discard perishable foodstuffs
It will deal a severe and needless financial blow to residents who are already struggling to make ends meet
Vereeniging) probably also does not have the funds needed to repair the substation
The fire destroyed basically all the substation’s electric components
The Municipality’s Electricity Department has already started removing the damaged parts
The biggest concern is replacing the damaged electric panels as they are not off-the-shelf items
The panels have to be ordered from specific suppliers
the Municipality already owes the specialised company contracted to work on the substation more than R4,5 million – which poses an additional financial challenge
The FF Plus has asked the Municipality to settle the contractor’s outstanding account to ensure that the affected areas’ power is restored as soon as possible

JOHANNESBURG - Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng runs the very real risk of turning into a ghost town
This is if ArcelorMittal goes ahead with shutting down some of its long-steel plants

Gauteng – A major drug lab was uncovered in Vanderbijlpark this past Friday
leading to the arrest of a 46-year-old suspect and the seizure of mandrax worth R500,000
The discovery came as part of a cross-border operation between the Western Cape Organised Crime Investigations (OCI) and the Head Office Narcotics team
showcasing the power of teamwork in tackling South Africa’s drug scourge
is expected to face the music in court soon
The operation kicked off when tactical teams swooped in on a property in South Crest
they seized an unlicensed firearm and over 7,000 mandrax tablets
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk revealed that further digging led the team to a hidden gem of criminal activity – a fully operational drug lab in Vanderbijlpark
“Further investigations led the team to a property in Vanderbijlpark
where they uncovered a fully operational drug laboratory
and a quantity of mandrax powder and mandrax tablets with an estimated value of R500 000,” Van Wyk said in a statement
making this one of the biggest drug busts in Gauteng this year
For residents of Vanderbijlpark and surrounding areas
the news has sparked a mix of relief and concern as the fight against drugs hits close to home
The South African Police Service (SAPS) highlighted the success of collaboration in a statement on X
“A cross-border operation between Western Cape Organised Crime Investigations (OCI) and Head Office Narcotics has led to the discovery of a clandestine drug laboratory in Vanderbijlpark on Friday
dismantling a sophisticated setup designed to pump mandrax – a popular illegal sedative – into the streets
Reports from The Citizen and IOL News confirm that the suspect
The operation’s success didn’t just stop at the lab
The Alberton search also uncovered additional evidence
tying the suspect to a broader drug network
With mandrax tablets fetching high prices on the black market
this bust has dealt a hefty blow to the local drug trade
The lab was kitted out with everything needed to churn out mandrax on a large scale
Alongside the R500,000 worth of mandrax powder and tablets
officers confiscated a tablet press – a machine used to shape the drugs into pills – along with various chemicals and manufacturing gear
This setup points to a well-organised operation
likely supplying dealers across Gauteng and beyond
The South Crest search added another layer to the case
suggest the suspect wasn’t just cooking drugs but was potentially armed and ready to protect his illegal empire
this haul is a double win – taking drugs and a dangerous weapon off the streets
The Vanderbijlpark community has been buzzing since the news broke
Local resident Thandi Mokoena told Scrolla.Africa
Knowing the police are fighting back gives us hope
but it’s scary to think this was happening right under our noses.” The bust has shone a spotlight on the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in South Africa
SAPS has been quick to celebrate the victory
“The operation led officers to an address in South Crest
where a search of the suspect’s premises and vehicle resulted in the seizure of an unlicensed firearm and over 7 000 mandrax tablets worth more than R560 000.” It’s a clear message: the law is closing in on drug lords
The 46-year-old suspect is set to appear in court soon
though an exact date hasn’t been confirmed
Legal experts say he could face charges ranging from drug manufacturing and trafficking to possession of an unlicensed firearm – crimes that carry heavy penalties under South African law
Van Wyk hinted that the investigation is far from over
with teams working to uncover any accomplices or linked operations
The bust has alo sparked calls for tighter community policing and more resources to tackle drug labs popping up in residential areas

Arcelor Mittal South Africa has delayed the closure of its long-steel plant operations by a month pending talks with the government to try to save the business
The company had planned to start winding down the loss-making long-steel business by the end of last month
but has delayed it due to “continuing discussions with the South African government” as well as higher than anticipated orders
It added it would announce the talks’ outcome before the end of this month
“We have asked the government to normalise a few things
and to act quicker in terms of border protection for the steel industry,” Arcelor Mittal South Africa CEO Kobus Verster told a news briefing
“We were clear to say we are not going to carry any further losses,” Verster added
The company wants the government to reduce the discount on scrap metal offered to South African recycling mini-mills
saying this put its long steel operations at a disadvantage

The company received a R380 million loan from the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa

to facilitate the continued operations of its long-steel business
Arcelor Mittal South Africa also reported a headline loss of R5.1 billion for the year ended December 31
compared with a R1.89 billion headline loss in 2023
It said the losses were driven by poor financial performance in its long steel business
The shutdown could affect about 3,500 direct and indirect jobs in total

The protest and looting of shops belonging to foreign national has spread to Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal. The looting had been concentrated in Sharpeville.
It is believed the unrest was sparked by the murder of a South African businessman allegedly by a foreign national last night. However, police are yet to confirm this.
Residents say they no longer want foreign nationals to operate businesses in the area.
Some foreign nationals say they are fearing for their lives.
“We are feeling bad. We are here to make business not to fight people. I heard they shot one South African local. Now they started looting shops. We don’t know what is our future because we invested a lot of money here,” says one of the business owners.
Meanwhile, five people have been arrested for public violence in Sharpeville. Gauteng Police Spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says the situation remains tense and police continue to fire rubber bullets to try and disperse the crowds.
“The situation is tense in Sharpville following protests that started on Tuesday, 15 October 2024. The community members looted foreign national tuck-shops and on 16 October 2024, a local businessman was fatally shot while his employee sustained a gunshot wound,” says Nevhuhulwi.
The shutdown could affect about 3,500 direct and indirect jobs in total.($1 = 18.5867 rand)Reporting by Nelson Banya; Editing by Sherry Jacob-Phillips; editing by Barbara Lewis

A shocking revelation surfaced during the continuation of Keneilwe Shalaba’s bail application, reports Sedibeng Ster
the investigating officer probing the multiple charges against the 32-year-old — including the kidnapping of her two-year-old Kutlwano Shalaba — revealed that the mother of three allegedly received a whopping R75 000 into her account moments after reporting her son had been kidnapped
Keneilwe is facing charges of human trafficking
and making a false statement to the police
During the dramatic proceedings at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court
Sergeant George Motloung said Keneilwe acknowledged receiving the funds
The suspicious timing of the financial windfall has raised questions about her involvement in her son’s disappearance
Kutlwano was reported missing in November last year
sparking a frantic search by Boipatong police
This comes after Keneilwe claimed Kutlwano was snatched from her back by a trio travelling in a silver-grey VW Polo while she was walking in Batloung Street
investigations uncovered that she may have sold her son and reported the case to divert attention
Motloung said: “We managed to get her banking record
We know how much was deposited on the same day she alleged the child was kidnapped
R75 000 were deposited into her account on the same day she opened a kidnapping case.”
Giving reasons why Keneilwe should not be granted bail
Motloung said the pregnant mother is a danger to the community
there’s a likelihood that the ones she is carrying [twins] might go through the same as the two-year-old,” said the investigating officer
Motloung stated that Keneilwe would interfere with the investigation if released on bail
saying she must contact the father of the missing child and ask him to deposit R40 000 for Kutlwano’s release
She also told one of the people she went to Durban with that if the police asked if she was with her son
She said she would pay the person and do anything for her,” said Motloung
Motloung said the state has a strong case against Keneilwe
