Zero Carbon Charge recently launched South Africa’s first-ever off-grid electric vehicle charging station – and the company has aggressive plans to cover South Africa’s national roads with a network of 120 such stations in the next 12 months
TechCentral recently attended the launch of the first station – 20km outside Wolmaransstad on the N12 between Johannesburg and Kimberley – and filed the video below
featuring on-site interviews with co-founders Joubert Roux and Andries Malherbe as well as several EV industry experts
The Wolmaransstad site is the first in a R2.3-billion plan to build off-grid charging stations – which use no Eskom- or grid-supplied electricity – every 150km along South Africa’s national roads
offering a mix of fast DC (aimed at EVs) and slower AC (for plug-in hybrids) charging points
can supply up to 480kW of electricity to vehicles that support this
each station will consist of a field of solar panels
and a coffee shop or farm stall where drivers can relax while they wait (typically no more than 25 minutes on the DC chargers)
Charge’s technology partners are China’s Greencore Energy Solutions and Magic Power
which provided the charging hardware for the Wolmaransstad charging station and which will supply the platform for the other charging stations that must still be built
Founded by executive chairman Roux and director Malherbe, Zero Carbon Charge – which is rebranding itself simply as Charge – appears to have timed its entry into the market well
driven by new Chinese entrants into the market
expected to lead to a big uptick in EV sales in South Africa from next year
Charge has developed an app for Android and iOS that will give drivers a “seamless
user-friendly experience for managing their charging needs and transactions”
along with the entire network of 120 charging stations
will create an income stream for landowners on which these facilities are built
Landowners will earn 5% of the revenue generated from vehicles charging on their land,” the company said in a statement following the Wolmaransstad launch
“We believe that the roll-out of our off-grid charging stations across the country will serve as a crucial catalyst for EV migration in South Africa,” said Roux in the statement
“Our own research shows that an EV charged from Eskom’s predominantly coal-fired power grid indirectly emits 5.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year
an average petrol-powered car emits only 4.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year
It is clear that the development of a network of off-grid
renewably powered EV charging stations is the only way we will reduce transport emissions in the country.”

once lived and dug for diamonds in the Wolmaransstad area of North West
they found a “donderse groot goen” (an extremely large stone of immense value) just when they’d practically given up on their diggings
Such was the shock of discovery that one brother immediately fell to the ground and had himself an epileptic fit. The other ran straight into the bush and was never heard from again. The third one, however, had a bit more sense: he went to town, bought a bottle of brandy and celebrated until the wheels fell off.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
I have to say it sounded a lot funnier when Gert Jacobs of Wolmaransstad told it to photographer Les Bush and I back in the autumn of 2004
Not many tourists travel through diamond country northwest of Kimberley
of an industry that began back in the 1920s and somehow never stopped – although it did falter from time to time
and you see the diggings like massive anthills with machines
If you want to get caught up in the historical account of the most eccentric diamond rush ever, read Weerlig in die Weste: ’n Geskiedenis van Lichtenburg (Lightning in the West: a History of Lichtenburg), by author Johannes de Beer.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
He tells the story of how the first diamond in the Lichtenburg area was found on Elandsputte Farm in December 1924
by a worker who was digging a hole for one of the legs of a new cattle dip
He gave the little stone to the owner’s son
who in turn took it to the local chemistry teacher for testing
but after dropping it into a bottle of acid overnight
it emerged all bright and shiny in the morning
An old-time diamond jig on display in Wolmaransstad
Mr Voorendyk Snr then wrote to the state geologist and prospector
The stone you found was probably brought there by an ostrich from somewhere else.”
A few kilometres north of Elandsputte Farm
While walking off to a nearby farmhouse to ask for help
Dr Harger inspected the dug-up gravel at the fresh grave of a donkey
so much so that a few weeks later he came back with a team of workers and 14 fine oxen
Within the first day of washing the gravel
Dr Harger’s group had found 21 diamonds of various sizes
Farmer Voorendyk sold more than £40-000 worth of water to the diggers within the initial six months of the operation.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove adsadvertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
More diamonds were found at other sites in the area
and the world’s eyes were firmly focused on the little dorp of Lichtenburg
Thousands of prospectors pitched up from everywhere
and when the ringmaster saw what was going on
Read more: Diamond rush — The precious memories of a diamond dorp on the West Coast
more than 20,000 eager diggers gathered on Grasfontein Farm for a four-kilometre “claim run”
watched by a massive crowd of cheering onlookers and 300 mounted policemen
Olympic-standard runners were hired for their strong legs
but there were also a few women in skirts and an old gent with a wooden leg among the hopeful competitors
The late Les Bush: a fine photographer and fellow traveller
There was a false start, as a few dozen runners suddenly burst forward over the veld. They were cornered by the horseback cops and sent back to the lines. It turns out a little steenbokkie had been flushed and then chased by some of the younger men. This led to such complete chaos that the Minister of Mines postponed the event to March. advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Lichtenburg was the richest public diggings in the world
It became home to more than 150,000 people, and had a business centre with 250 diamond buyers’ offices and 60 “tearooms”. Then the surface gravels played out, the boom was over, the diggers moved on and the town slumped back into obscurity.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Shortly after pitching up in Wolmaransstad
we met with local diamond cutter Fred van Wyk
He sat there working his wheel like a daytime deejay playing some tunes
which heightens the creative challenge Fred faces
“Our diamonds come mainly from the Bamboesspruit
which was once a bigger river than the Orange (now Gariep),” he told us
“As a child growing up on a farm around here
I was always interested in the stones lying around in the veld
someone offered me a job as a cutter and that’s what I’ve been doing – for more than 20 years.”
Fred could probably have found a job as a diamond cutter anywhere in the world
“The rush seems to be over,” he said. “You have to dig really deep for the diamonds now. A lot of diggers are moving off to more profitable fields in Barkly West and Douglas, but there’s still enough work around here to keep me busy.”advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Brandy making was a hobby for Oom Pieter Ernst
but three strong hits of Oom Piet’s Klipspruit Brandy (run-over ice cubes
with a hint of spring water added) made me an immediate convert to the browner stuff
A couple of hours later found us deep in mealie country at Doep’s Bar on a social visit
This was a genuine farmer’s pub and restaurant
not simply an after-work refuge for the boys
The next morning we were with Mariana Marx out at the Uitval Witblits Farm
Mariana is one of only four South African women with a licence to still
She doesn’t produce her velveteen mulekick moonshine in great quantities
and De Wijnwinkel in Wolmaransstad is her major outlet
“In the old days when a witblits stoker died
the Customs and Excise man would come out and chop down the still with an axe so the children could not continue the tradition,” she said
Her husband Frans took us on a tour of his diamond diggings
“How do you recognise a diamond among all the other stones?”
he stands out like a gentleman in a tuxedo in a crowd of labourers,” he replied
Even though he had salted one of the pans with some diamonds
the thrill of discovery was still there as we spotted the shiny stones
instead of running off with both arms waving
we left the little diamonds right there and returned to Mariana’s still for another fine shot of bushveld grape juice

CHARGE has commissioned the first of its impressive off-grid EV charging stations in the North West
Located on the N12 between Klerksdorp and Wolmaransstad, it seems an odd location to pilot the first of South Africa’s off-grid EV charging stations
But its location makes sense when considering actual South African journey dynamics
Few current EV owners have the confidence to use their vehicles for authentic destination tourism
For journeys beyond South Africa’s urban borders (the ‘road trip’ idea)
South Africa needs better high-capacity charging network distribution
CHARGE’s mission is to create a network of powerful EV charging stations at 150km intervals
The distance-to-demand ratio on that rollout is data-guided
and CHARGE offers a power-up source independent of Eskom
Load-shedding might have miraculously ebbed this year, but the global pressure on governments to incentivise and manage carbon-neutral power infrastructure isn’t ebbing

Wolmaransstad has a municipal manager by the name of Ronnie Jonas
mutually-beneficial relationships with some highly-placed ANC provincial officials
By August last year, this town’s administration was found to be in such chaos and disarray that it was not able to fulfil one of its most basic functions: providing water to its citizens. The provincial government exercised its powers under the Constitution [most notably Section 139 1(b)], and placed the municipality under administration.advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
according to administrator attorney Iqbal Motala
is that while the council could still do its legislative work (i.e pass budgets and make by-laws)
its executive function (i.e the provision of basic services
payment of bills and other boring administrative stuff) was taken over by himself
was investigate the state of the town’s management
he uncovered fourteen cases of severe financial misconduct on the part of the municipal manager
“This is a loophole in the law,” says Motala
“which has been exploited by municipal managers if they want retain their positions
There is currently a bill in progress to close this loophole
but until it is passed that discrepancy in the law remains.”
So Jonas – disregarding the fact that his own poor performance had plunged his municipality into crisis and that he really should have resigned in disgrace – took Motala to court to retain his powers
In the meantime he still arrived for work every day
as the municipal staff were confused about to whom they should be reporting
Motala sought an interdict to keep Jonas off the premises
Jonas promptly brought a counter-application
It made life extremely difficult for the administrator
who was trying to rescue a sinking ship with a disgraced municipal manager breathing down his neck
Even the ruling ANC in the town was unhappy with this state of affairs
“The administrator wasn’t given space to work,” says a senior ANC member in Wolmaransstad who declined to be identified (for obvious reasons)
“He was starved of resources and constantly undermined.”
Some of the decisions taken by the Municipal Manager are quite breathtaking in their audacity
“There was a dispute about the employment of three people,” says the ANC source
was to negotiate a settlement with these disgruntled parties
to the satisfaction of everyone – except Jonas
The judge was less than pleased with Jonas’s conduct
saying that it appeared Jonas was ‘on a crusade of his own’
He ruled against Jonas and ordered he pay the costs in his personal capacity
Jonas claimed that the council had mandated him to oppose the court case
and say that if he has falsified the council minutes
Against this backdrop of continuous fighting
“In Leeudoringstad,” says DA councilor Don van Zyl
“the council workers are sitting all day on the pavements because no-one has given them any work to do
They tell me they have no transport and no equipment to do any work.”
Apart from the sickness caused by drinking dirty water
two children have drowned in the last few months in unfenced sewerage dams
“It is bad here,” says community activist Ncedile Molosi, who lives in Extension 10. “We have no services. The sewerage is running into houses, there are no roads, there are no streetlights. The problem is there is a lot of corruption in this council. I know they are going to kill me one day for speaking out, but I must speak the truth.”advertisementDon't want to see this? Remove ads
Motala’s six-month oversight tenure was extended three times
The threats against him increased until he was having to employ three bodyguards
“I was continually getting death threats,” he says
“But I think we managed to contain a lot of the damage
We managed to rein in the spending and pay creditors
At one stage Eskom was going to cut the town off
Iqbal Motala’s last term came to an end in June
the Wolmaransstad council got a warning from the National Treasury
During the course of their routine monitoring of council performance
they had picked up that Wolmaransstad was still in deep trouble
unless some serious and rapid steps were taken to solve the problems of mismanagement
the town faced the danger of having their Treasury funding cut off
“This is a very serious threat,” says Motala
“and it is very rare that the National Treasury should issue such a stern warning.”
the decision was taken by the provincial executive that Wolmaransstad had turned itself around so successfully that the administrator was no longer needed
“I was really amazed by this,” says Motala
“as I had not yet briefed anyone on the council performance.”
“I have prepared a dossier for the Hawks and the Public Protector,” he says
“We’ve reached the point where there will be arrests.”
Wolmaransstad and the other towns in the Maquassi Hills district remain dysfunctional
But surely it should not be so difficult or costly to remove a man who is so clearly a destructive force in his job
“Just like in Bloemhof” (where three babies died from polluted water and three top council officials were fired) “the council or the MEC or the minister can dismiss these officials.”
“But Jonas has friends in high places,” says van Zyl
“As long as the ANC is in charge in the province
and the office of the provincial spokesperson went unanswered

Zero Carbon Charge broke ground on its first 100% renewable energy charging station in what will become South Africa’s first national network of 120 solar-powered charging facilities spaced at 150 km intervals
Unlike other charging stations that connect to Eskom’s grid (and thus use coal as their primary energy source)
Zero Carbon Charge’s charging stations are powered by South Africa’s abundant and renewable supply of sunshine
“We are thrilled to begin construction of the first 100% renewable energy charging facility in Wolmaransstad today
and it is great news for motorists who will not have to worry about load-shedding preventing them from charging their vehicles,” says Joubert Roux (Co-director and Founder of Zero Carbon Charge)
Each Zero Carbon Charge charging station generates electricity on site using solar PV and stores energy in lithium iron phosphate batteries
with generators fuelled by hydrotreated vegetable oil as a back-up power source
Hydrotreated vegetable oil is used as it offers a reduction of carbon emissions of up to 90% compared to diesel
According to Zero Carbon Charge’s other Co-founder and Director
South Africa needs to prepare for the global transition to EVs: “Zero Carbon Charge is forging ahead in preparation for the EV revolution that is coming to these shores
we expect electric vehicles to account for 25% of all new car sales in South Africa
Our network of 100% renewable charging stations will offer consumers a clean and fast way of charging their vehicles,” he says
Using 720 DC ultra-fast charge points for EVs
plus 240 AC charge points for plug-in hybrids
each Zero Carbon Charge charging station can charge an EV in about 20 minutes
it will take a standard ‘on-grid’ AC charging station around four hours to fully charge an EV
pending various planning and land-use approvals
Zero Carbon Charge will have its full network of solar-powered charging facilities operational by September 2025
the Mayor of Maquassi Hills Local Municipality
says: “We are excited that our municipality is leading the way with the green transport transition
with the first approval for a facility like this in the country.”
the owner of the land upon which the site is being built
adds: “This is a great opportunity for rural landowners to become part of the energy value chain for EVs
to benefit from surplus energy generated and derive an additional income stream.”
Each Zero Carbon Charge station will include a farmstall so that motorists charging their vehicles can enjoy a quick snack and a cup of coffee in the 20 minutes it will take for their car to be fully charged
will boost South Africa’s rural economies by providing local jobs and an additional revenue stream for farmers
Landowners will earn 5% of the revenue generated from vehicle-charging on their land
whilst a percentage of revenue will also be reinvested in local socio-economic development initiatives

Police in the North West have cautioned members of the community to be vigilant when responding to social media advertisements as criminals are using numerous tricks to scam them
They say there have been numerous scams on social media platforms such as Facebook
Twitter and WhatsApp since the beginning of festive season
Provincial police spokesperson Adel Myburgh says two of the scams relate to places in Wolmaransstad and Makwassie in the Doctor Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality
“A 35-year-old victim saw an advertisement on Facebook of a kombi that is for sale
He made contact with the advertiser who alleged that he is the lawful owner
where the prospective buyer met the seller
who ultimately overpowered the buyer and his friend
tied them up and robbed them of cash and their cellular phones
a 42-year-old victim communicated with a prospective seller of goats
they overpowered and robbed him of his cellular phone and cash.”
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says a national government project to eradicate potholes is at an advanced stage
Mbalula was visiting a number of road projects along the N12 in the North West that were previously riddled with potholes
The N12 was previously riddled with potholes but after the intervention from national government it is now nearly in a drivable state
Road agency SANRAL has for the past few months been fixing potholes on the N12 where it passes through the towns of Potchefstroom
The work in Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp has been completed
while in Wolmaransstad work will be done soon
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula says he is happy with the progress made and that the next major step is to fix potholes across the country
“I am rolling out a national project and this project will be rolled out throughout the country working with municipalities
I am going to take the money that we have been allocating and use it to close these potholes and even have control over the money in terms of grants we have given to the provinces to direct them where we can account visibly,” says Mbalula
Motorists have applauded government for doing a sterling job
“If you can check this place is busy so we just want to thank SANRAL for fixing the road and it is very easy for us
It feels much better to drive where there are no potholes because potholes makes our bodies not to be comfortable in a car.”
“Minister has told us that the whole budget almost R45 million and this is what we see logically and construction is doing what is suppose to do,” says another motorist
it has thus far spent R14 million of R22 million budgeted to fix 1,6 kilometres of road in Wolmaransstad
“We have recycled 150 millimeter with the material that was there and sterlised it with cement and afterwards
Last layer will start on the 7th of July with a final surfacing of 40 millimeter and do the road marking
we can get five years of use of the road but planning is to come in three to four years from now to do total reconstruction of the surface layers.”
Mbalula’s planned community engagement in Wolmaransstad was cut short when those in attendance became rowdy
