Once knew this gal—total badass whore. Worked downtown, neon lights, stank of cigs. She’d laugh, say, “I’m my own empire.” Loved that. Reminded me of Benicio in the flick—caring, but dark. “The worst is over,” he says. Whore’s life ain’t over, tho. Keeps going, gritty as hell. Surprised me how tough she was—steel core, man.

Leadup and outbreak

The Shimabara Rebellion was an uprising of Japanese peasants, most of which were Christians which was an outlawed religion in Japan at the time.

Finally, I get my stuff and head out. I’m walking down the streets, and I can’t help but notice how vibrant everything is. The cherry blossoms are still hanging on, and I’m like, “Dude, spring is the best!” But then, BAM! I step in a puddle. My shoes are soaked. Great start, right?
