A woman has been charged over an alleged multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud to launder funds on behalf of a crime gang selling black market tobacco
has been accused of fraudulently inflating her income to secure 10 home loans worth almost $7 million since 2020
She then allegedly laundered funds from organised criminals in the illegal tobacco trade via the repayments
Following her arrest at Berala in the city's west on Friday
seizing $2.5 million worth of cigarettes as well as loose tobacco
more than $100,000 in cash and a luxury SUV
An illegal gambling den and an unlicensed tattoo parlour believed to be linked to the organised crime group were also uncovered
NSW Police Financial Crimes Squad Commander Gordon Arbinja said the use of fraudulent mortgages showed the lengths organised criminals would go to conceal their activities
'We will not tolerate criminals who undermine the integrity of our financial system,' he said
The seized assets have been frozen and the state of NSW will attempt to claw back the alleged criminal proceeds
Xue was granted bail in Burwood Local Court on Friday after being charged with 20 fraud and criminal proceeds offences
She will have to hand over passports and report to police daily
while $100,000 will need to be deposited to secure her release
Xue is due to face court again on April 30
The arrest comes after an investigation into seven properties spanning more than six months
state police revealed there had been a string of attacks on tobacconists in northern NSW
sparking fears Victoria's cut-throat turf war over the illicit cigarette and vape trade had spilled across the border
More than 100 arson incidents in the southern state have been linked to Middle Eastern organised crime syndicates and outlaw motorcycle gangs fighting to control the black market

New South Wales Health has issued an urgent warning following a confirmed case of the highly infectious measles disease in Greater Western Sydney.
A Sydneysider recently returned from Vietnam, currently experiencing a widespread measles outbreak, and attended Family Doctors Berala last Saturday with the virus between 10am and 11.15am.
The state's health body has advised those in the western Sydney area to remain alert to any signs or symptoms of measles.
South Western Sydney Local Health District Director of Public Health, Dr Mitchell Smith, said while the clinic poses no ongoing risk, people who visited on Saturday morning should monitor for symptoms.
'Symptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes, runny nose and a cough, usually followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that starts on the head and face, then spreads to the rest of the body,' Dr Smith said.
'It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear after being exposed, so it's important for people who visited this site at that time to look out for symptoms up until Wednesday 5 February.
'If you experience symptoms please call ahead before visiting your doctor.'
Measles is one of the most contagious diseases.
Coughs, breaths, and sneezes from an infected person can be enough to spread the virus.
Dr Smith said Australians should ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations in light of the case.
'Anyone born after 1965 needs to make sure they have had two doses of measles vaccine,' he said.
'This is especially important before overseas travel. Measles outbreaks are occurring in several regions of the world at the moment.'
On Monday, Vietnam's Ministry of Health reported more than 20,000 suspected measles cases in 2024.
There have been at least 13 confirmed deaths as a result of the outbreak.
Government bodies warned Australians travelling to any country overseas to remain vigilant in the face of the outbreak.
Last week, a child returned from Vietnam to South Australia and visited several medical centres and shopping centres.
The child carried the state's first measles case for the year, with just six cases of measles reported in South Australia last year.

Concern over low testing numbers in NSW as health authorities urge anyone who visited the BWS store in Berala get tested and isolate for 14 days
New South Wales has recorded two locally acquired Covid-19 cases linked to the Berala cluster in Sydney’s west
while Victoria reported three new community cases
The latest two NSW cases were picked up overnight
after there were zero local cases recorded in the 24 hours until 8pm Sunday – the first time the state has had no community cases since 15 December
The latest cases will be included in tomorrow’s figures
The acting premier John Barilaro said the results were “good news”, but urged more people in western Sydney and Wollongong to get tested, describing the testing figure of 22,000 as “far too low”.

“given the large number of people” who attended the BWS bottle store and Woolworths in the suburb
potential exposure dates for the BWS were increased to cover an 11-day period
said the latest people who were infected at the bottle shop were a man in his 40s who visited on Christmas Eve and a woman in her 40s
She said it was “critical” that anyone who attended the store “even for a few minutes” between 22 and 31 December should get tested and isolate for 14 days – even if they received a negative test result
“We are deeming everyone close contacts,” Chant said

but I can make this clear today - there won’t be any lockdown of the Cumberland area
no other lockdown in any other parts of Sydney,” Barilaro said
Fines of $200 for breaching new mandatory mask rules in greater Sydney also became enforceable on Monday
NSW health minister Brad Hazzard told anyone not prepared to wear a mask to stay home
You don’t have to go into the shopping centre and put other people in danger.”
Chant said NSW residents “should get used to wearing masks whenever we’re in indoors”
indicating the rule may remain in place even after a vaccine is rolled out
“As we get the population vaccinated and as we open our borders
it’s unlikely the vaccine will eliminate Covid,” she said
“We now will need to learn how to live with it and some of the practises of mask-wearing may well be important going forward
but I think people just need to get used to wearing masks.”
she also asked people to be “compassionate” and not police people without masks as some have medical exemptions
“When they actually see someone not wearing a mask
leave that judgment to police or to other enforcement officers because you never know what is behind that for that individual,” she said

Victoria’s decision to close the border to all of NSW on New Year’s Day resulted in thousands of travellers rushing to return to the state
They were all required to get tested immediately
Allan said Victoria had received about 2,200 entry exemption applications since the border to NSW closed
Hazard said the public response to the new rules in greater Sydney had been promising
However, he said a 27-year-old woman from Cronulla, who had been ordered to self-isolate in Byron Bay, had been fined after she received “two infringement notices in the past three days”.
A wedding operator in the suburb of Fairfield was also fined $5,000 for holding a wedding on Saturday with 600 to 700 people in attendance, according to police, which Hazzard said was “almost double” what was allowed.
Barilaro also said that the Sydney Cricket Ground’s board would make an announcement later on Monday about the Sydney Test match due to start on 7 January.
In response to calls for the event to be called off, he said he was “confident” in health measures in place, however he discouraged people from regional areas from travelling to the city to attend.
“We have shown that we can run events in this state in a safe way … NSW Health through Kerry Chant’s team, have been working with the SCG and cricket to find that framework.”
However, he said every day they were “confronted with other issues”.
“If it is wet weather, what does that look like? Will people be leaving their zones seats and congregating under the shelter? They’re the things we got to deal with. What do we do about mask-wearing and maybe going up to the bar? Transport on the way in?
“We’re also giving consideration to the numbers as ticket sales continue and I will advise today that the SCG and cricket later today will be making an announcement in relation to the test.”

The NSW government says it won't introduce further lockdowns in Sydney in spite of growing concerns about the Berala cluster in the city's west.
While only two new cases have linked to the cluster today -- residents in western Sydney are being strongly urged to get tested.
The State Government is considering tougher penalties for businesses that flout COVID restrictions after a wedding venue operator allowed hundreds of people to gather at the weekend.

A two-year-old boy has suffered significant injuries in a fall from an apartment balcony at around 12.45 on Tuesday afternoon
The boy fell from a height of around 10metres from the home in Crawford Street, Berala, about 20km west of Sydney's CBD
A NSW Ambulance spokesman told Daily Mail Australia that the child was treated at the scene by paramedics.
He was then taken to Westmead Children's Hospital, 12km away, in a 'serious but stable condition' for further treatment.
Several emergency services personnel and vehicles were pictured at the scene.
Among those were police officers gathering evidence in front of the building from where the child had fallen.
Another officer was pictured inside an apartment, with a toddler in a nappy also visible in the photo.

Thousands of customers at a busy Woolworths store in Berala will be plunged into isolation after a coronavirus infected staffer worked 11 days over Christmas.
A nearby BWS store in the western Sydney suburb has already become the epicentre of an outbreak after two infected workers came into contact with at least 2,000 customers over the same holiday period.
The Woolworths staff member worked consistently from December 22 until December 31, potentially exposing thousands of locals to the deadly respiratory virus.
Any customers who visited Woolworths at any time of the day between those dates must get a Covid test and self isolate immediately until they receive a negative result.
Updated information released on Monday night also explained that any customers at the infected BSW, next to Woolworths, at any time of the day between December 20 and December 31 should also get tested and isolate.
While no new Covid cases were recorded on Monday, two new cases have since been linked to the cluster which will be included on Tuesday's figures, taking the total for the Berala cluster to at least 15.
NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the Berala cluster was concerning as transmission happened despite people spending very short periods of time inside the bottle shop.
He said he would not rule out a local lockdown, similar to what was seen in the Northern Beaches.
'We will always consider what we can do in relation to a lockdown and further restrictions, especially where there is a hot spot,' he told the Today Show.
'One of the things we said when we were lifting restrictions was that if we had to respond, it would be fast and it would be hard and local, just like we have done for the peninsular.
'There is no reason we couldn't do that for Berala, Cumberland LGA area.'
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said there are more than 2,000 people who may have visited the Berala store over the Christmas period.
Contact tracers are relying on CCTV and Rewards cards data to track close contacts.
But there are concerns that people who were exposed to the virus in that period could have already spread Covid throughout the community, potentially exposing tens of thousands of people along the way.
Get tested and isolate for two weeks regardless of result

Outer pockets of Western Sydney are on the brink of becoming the city’s newest millionaires’ rows due to an unexpected spike in demand from buyers during the pandemic
Berala and Cecil Hills currently have median prices above $960,000 and are tipped to soon hit $1 million if recent growth continues
Other western suburbs in Sydney’s middle ring that were once among the cheapest areas within a 30km commute from the CBD are also closing in on $1 million average house prices
These suburbs include Panania and East Hills in the Canterbury-Bankstown region and Wentworthville

Recent growth has come as housing experts reveal increased work-from-home arrangements during COVID-19 have encouraged homebuyers to look further afield
This increased competition for “family-friendly” houses on larger blocks at a time of reduced sales — pushing prices upward
This Wentworthville house sold for $1.28 million in October
Realestate.com.au chief economist Nerida Conisbee said many of the suburbs on the brink of $1 million were defying the recession and recording phenomenal growth
“They’ve been strong growth suburbs over the past year,” she said
“Families who have not been affected by employment cuts often have more money in savings now because they have been spending less during the pandemic
That money is going into larger properties with more space.”
McGrath Estate Agents founder John McGrath said the pandemic was driving families back to suburbia in pursuit of the “Aussie dream” — a house on a quarter-acre block
This was reversing a trend from recent years where more families were embracing higher density living

Clergy and lay members rejoiced to hear that the gospel is flourishing in the Western Region parishes of Berala and Pitt Town as they voted to return these two provisional parishes to full parish status on the third night of Synod.
God has been faithful over half a century
“[Berala’s] been a provisional parish for at least 50 years,” rector the Rev Mike Doyle informed the Synod
God has been faithful – working alongside the parish as members sought to share the gospel.
79.1 per cent of Berala’s population speaks a language other than English at home
and ensure the parish is proactively connecting with the community
and provides multilingual services and Bible study groups in languages other than English
These efforts have resulted in many baptised as they come to know Christ plus a thriving kids’ and youth ministry.
Mr Doyle also said that Berala aims to begin a second service next March catering more to younger people
and continue to “make followers of Jesus and bring about growth in our members’ relationships with God and each other”
this will “raise leaders from within those languages and cultures” in the local community
so that the gospel can spread more easily without fear of miscommunication.
groups and individuals that have supported and encouraged Berala’s ministry spiritually and financially – including the Rev Andy Chung and his wife Leisel
the Centre for Ministry Development and the Geneva Push
Mark Leach and the parishes of Church Hill and Sutherland
Berala were in the public gallery on the night
and were jubilant to see their parish reclassified.
rector the Rev Greg Peisley with his wife Sue (who were then working at Wilberforce) launched a church plant at nearby Arndell Anglican School with only 15 adults and 20 kids
Over the next 10 years the church plant grew steadily
with most of its growth coming through conversions within the school community.
Mr Peisley became rector of Pitt Town in 2008
and continued to run the church at Arndell until
the church plant decided to relocate from the school to Pitt Town to “allow [for] more opportunity to share the gospel with people who had no connection with the school”.
the community’s eagerness to hear God’s word has caused attendance to grow so much that “we’re struggling to make room”
There is now a regular attendance of about 300 adults and 60-80 kids across four church services
plus more than 100 more kids at youth group.
Results from the most recent National Church life survey showed that 12 per cent of Pitt Town’s members became Christian as a result of the parish’s ministry
The video accompanying the presentation noted that
our focus has remained on mission with well over 100 adults and young adults turning and trusting Jesus with their eternity”
It has also strengthened hundreds more in their faith
“It’s been something that God has blessed and we’re very thankful for that,” Mr Peisley said
“It’s been a privilege.”

A detective investigating a mysterious stabbing was the laughing stock of his police station after demanding mangoes be fingerprinted - until they lead to charges being pressed
Detective Senior Constable Troy Platten was called to a case in Sydney's west which would eventually be known as the 'mango tree murder'
had been knifed outside of his mother's house in Berala
he had managed to stumble back inside and was rushed to hospital - telling police five males had attacked him before he passed away the next day
revealing the first thing he noticed as he arrived at the crime scene in the early hours of the morning were mangoes strewn across the street in front of the house
'I was going around telling everyone these mangoes were going to get printed. I was the laughing stock of the local area command,' Mr Platten told The Daily Telegraph.
Despite his colleagues' skepticism he was confident the firm, smooth surface of the mangoes would be ideal for pulling prints and demanded the forensic crew examine the fruit.
He was also racing against incoming rain that could wash away any clues.
'I said: 'We've got murderers on the run, bad weather coming and limited resources. Make it happen and I'll take the blame for it if it doesn't work out',' he said.
It did work out, with the mangoes yielding clear fingerprints after being rushed to Parramatta's forensic services hub in evidence bags.
Police canvassing for witnesses had also discovered five local boys were seen roaming the suburb's streets on the night of the attack - each with criminal records.
Police compared their prints on file to the mangoes and they had their suspects.
The group were five were teenage delinquents from the area.
Mr Laxdale had told officers five males who had climbed the mango tree in the middle of the night had attacked him after he tried to chase them off.
The teenagers turned on him, he told police, and began bashing him before most of the group ran off.
One of the attackers, he claimed, stayed back and had been carrying a 'butterfly' knife.
Mr Laxdale was stabbed twice in the chest, in three places on his back, and twice on the arm.
A 17-year-old and four 16-year-olds were charged over the crime.
The oldest boy, who was seen by witnesses washing a knife, was convicted of murder in the NSW Supreme Court.
However, he was acquitted under a technicality in a subsequent retrial.
Officers, believing him to be 18-years-old, had interviewed him without a support adult present.
The court found at the re-trial that he was aged only 17 years and six months and quashed the conviction.
