Cars and fences have been graffitied with anti-Israel slogans at Woollahra in Sydney's east overnight
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as an "outrage" and has spoken with the Australian Federal Police commissioner
Police said they wished to speak to two people
Link copiedShareShare articlePrime Minister Anthony Albanese has condemned the anti-Israel graffiti sprayed on properties in Sydney's east in what authorities have described as an anti-Semitic attack
NSW Police said they were called to Magney Street in Woollahra at 1am on Wednesday to reports a car was engulfed in flames
the fence of two homes and footpath graffitied with "Kill Israiel [sic]" and other offensive slogans
NSW Police set up a crime scene in the area and said officers wished to speak to two people
Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said the car that was set alight was one the offenders drove to the area
that they have spray-painted on those houses and footpath
A crime scene was set up at Woollahra in Sydney's eastern suburbs
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said two males were seen running from the area
"The perpetrators were disguised and we need public assistance to come forward and help identify those two people and any information they have is welcome," she said
"There is no place for hate of this nature in Sydney or anywhere in Australia
and we will be using all our resources to investigate this matter."
Mr Albanese said the act of vandalism was aimed at "promoting fear" in the community
"[Anti-Semitism] diminishes us as a nation
when we have events such as we saw here again overnight," he said at a press conference
Anthony Albanese said he had spoken to the Australian Federal Police commissioner about the incident
Mr Albanese announced $8.5 million would be spent on the redevelopment of the Sydney Jewish Museum
He said about 55,000 people have visited the museum this year
"I want them to learn about this history," Mr Albanese noted
The prime minister said he had spoken to the Australian Federal Police commissioner and would be briefed by officers from a new anti-Semitism task force
"There's no place for anti-Semitism in this country or anywhere else for that matter
"This is an attack on people because they happen to be Jewish."
Police and firefighters responded to reports of the car fire and graffiti
NSW Premier Chris Minns described the incident as a "hate crime" designed to strike fear into the Jewish community
Mr Minns said the location of the incident and sequence of events pointed to it being an anti-Semitic attack
"This is not simply just an act of vandalism on the streets of Sydney
We need to call it out for what it is," Mr Minns said
Premier Chris Minns said it was an "anti-Semitic attack"
Sydney's eastern suburbs are home to a large Jewish community
"Those communities migrated to Australia specifically and precisely to avoid this kind of hatred and division," he said
Two men have been charged with more than 20 offences each after buildings were vandalised and a car set on fire in another part of Woollahra on November 21
On Tuesday, an arson attack at the Adass Israel Synagogue in the heart of Melbourne's Jewish community on Friday was declared as a "likely terrorist incident" by authorities.
Police say there are three suspects in that incident but no-one has been charged.
Assistant Commissioner McKenna said it was not believed the overnight attack and the one last month were linked.
Police are investigating the lighting of the car and graffitiing of anti-Israel slogans. (ABC News)
Rabbi Benjamin Elton, chief minister of Sydney's The Great Synagogue, said the vandalism in Woollahra was "not an isolated incident" following recent attacks.
"This is now a pattern, and it's reached a new level of seriousness ... we've reached a new low of racism in our country," Dr Elton said.
Benjamin Klein, a board member of Adass Israel Synagogue, said it was "really quite scary" to see anti-Semitism continue to fester in Australia.
"People have to wake up, the government has to see, the police have to see, that this is something that really needs to be sorted through and stamped out," he told ABC News Breakfast.

In a statement, Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin said the Australian Jewish community had awoken to scenes of "terror and devastation".
"We expect the new AFP task force to bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice."
Zionist Federation of Australia chief executive Alon Cassuto described the incident as a "vile act".
"Jew-hatred is escalating into domestic terrorism, fuelled by the demonisation of Israel and a persistent failure to call out incitement," Mr Cassuto said.

Federal MP for the area Allegra Spender said people were devastated.
NSW Member for Vaucluse, which includes Woollahra, Kellie Sloane said the community was in shock and Jewish locals felt scared.
"I spoke to a couple of people this morning, a Jewish lady and her daughter, and they were in tears," Ms Sloane said.
"This is an attack by a couple of cowards who have come into this street in the middle of the night with spray paint and evil intent in their hearts."
A statement from the NSW Faith Affairs Council described the incident as "an act of hatred".
"This is an act designed to intimidate and distress members of our community. We condemn hatred directed against any community in Australia," the statement said.
"Hatred has no place in religion. It has no place in NSW."
Mr Albanese said with the exception of First Nations people, all Australians were migrants or the descendants of migrants.
"We can be, at a time where there is so much trouble and conflict in the world, we can be a microcosm for the world," he said.
"That's what we need to be, a beacon of hope and light".

Scott Marshall and Tammie Farrugia charged regarding December graffiti attack in eastern suburbs but police say alleged ‘principal offenders’ not yet arrested
A couple allegedly named on a police warrant as part of an investigation into a caravan laden with explosives has been charged in relation to a separate alleged arson and graffiti attack in Sydney’s east
New South Wales police on Tuesday charged Scott Marshall
over an incident in Woollahra on 11 December last year when an allegedly stolen car was set alight and anti-Israel graffiti was painted on cars
was charged in mid-January in relation to the Woollahra incident
She is accused of participating in a criminal group and damaging property

Marshall was arrested in Parklea prison on Tuesday – where he was being held on remand on unrelated charges – and charged with allegedly participating in a criminal group to contribute to criminal activity; destroying or damaging property as an accessory before the fact; and taking and driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner.
Det Supt Darren Newman said NSW police would allege Marshall and Farrugia were “involved in preparing” the car and jerry cans ahead of the Woollahra attack.
The head of Strike Force Pearl told reporters on Wednesday the alleged “principal offenders” behind the 11 December incident had not been arrested.

Neither Faruggia nor Marshall have been charged in relation to the caravan and Guardian Australia does not suggest any wrongdoing on their part
Marshall is the 13th person to be charged under Strike Force Pearl – a police operation set up to investigate acts of hate across Sydney
It is examining a spate of arson attacks and antisemitic and anti-Israel graffiti on streets and synagogues
Newman was asked on Wednesday about earlier police suggestions some of the attacks were conducted by people who were paid to commit crimes

police also released CCTV footage linked to an alleged antisemitic graffiti attack on 30 January on Mount Sinai College
a nearby home and a shopping centre in Maroubra
“I specifically am requesting members of the public to look at an image that has been circulated today
which has been taken from one of our [road] tunnels in the south of Sydney,” Newman said
Newman said police believed the three incidents were linked

The unrenovated two-bedroom terrace at 14 Rush Street is just steps from Queen Street village and drew seven active bidders. The auction began at $1.7 million and quickly became a showdown between a couple from the upper north shore and a local builder with deep pockets and grand plans for a major makeover.
But this blew us away,” said Ray White Woollahra selling agent Jack Taylor
“But it came to the location and the street
There have been a few good sales here in the past couple of years
Taylor said the couple won the auction but he wasn’t sure what they planned to do with the home
He said the property was sold as a deceased estate for beneficiaries in the UK and marked the end of a two-year saga in which his team cleared out hoarded belongings and navigated a maze of public trustee hurdles
“No one had lived there for two years and it had been years since the owner had filed a tax return,” Taylor said
“It was a hoarder house and we had to empty the whole thing out

In Dulwich Hill a young couple ended their year-long search for a family home when they splashed $2.8 million on a three-bedroom home
The property at 54 Abergeldie Street had a price guide of $2.5 million and a reserve of $2.75 million. It had remained in the same family for almost four decades and sits on a 487-square-metre block.
2 Baths2 ParkingView listing While three registered bidders attended the auction, just two competed for the keys. Bidding opened at $2.5 million.
Adrian William Real Estate selling agent Joseph Ferreira said bids rose quickly in consistent $50,000 increments until the underbidders – another young upsizing couple – were forced to bow out.
He said the result underscored how tightly held homes in the pocket were, with many of them staying in the same family for decades.
“This is one of the best streets in Dulwich Hill and homes don’t come up like this very often,” said Ferreira.

In Engadine a downsizing couple from Hurstville defied expectations by outbidding young upsizers from the inner west to secure a three-bedroom family home for $1,345,000
Bidding for the property, which sits on a 644-square-metre block at 15 Dural Crescent, opened at $1.25 million and climbed to $1,315,000 in six bids before the underbidders dropped out.
Selling agent Rhys Christofa of McGrath then convinced the downsizers to bid against themselves and increase their bid to $1,345,000, just below the original $1.35 million reserve.
“Everyone loved the quiet street, reserve views and neat, single-level layout,” Christofa said.
“I thought it was a young family’s dream, but this shows you never know who your buyer is.”
Christofa said Engadine’s affordability and lifestyle had made it a magnet for out-of-area buyers.
“The inner west buyers told me they’d pay $3 million for the same home there,” he said.
2 Baths2 ParkingView listing A determined family splashed $3,715,000 on their dream home at 120 Koola Avenue, Killara, after almost 52 Saturdays of Wollongong-to-Sydney commutes. They paid well more than the $3.3 million reserve, outbidding two others.
The home features a 917-square-metre block near to national park trails. Bidding opened at $3.1 million and bids quickly pushed the price to $3.5 million, before two bidders traded $6000, $8000 and $10,000 blows until the hammer fell.
Ray White selling agent Jessica Cao said the winning family had been struggling to break into the Sydney market for months after deciding to move north for work and their children’s schooling.
“They were so happy and so relieved to get it. Can you imagine driving from Wollongong to Sydney every Saturday for a year with kids?” Cao said.

Seven's Edwina Bartholomew has sold her gorgeous apartment in Sydney's eastern suburbs
The 41-year-old Sunrise star bought the two-bedroom
one bathroom flat in Woollahra in 2009 for $660,000
She reportedly sold for a whopping $1.57million - way more than the $1.35million she hoped for when when it went to auction on April 12
'I'm sad to see it go,' Bartholomew admitted
having rented out the home for between $900 and $1000 per week
Edwina and her husband Neil Varcoe have ambitious plans to convert what was once a dilapidated country pub into a boutique hotel
The TV star bought the 177-year-old building in Carcoar in May 2022 for $2.1million
Edwina told the publication that she was 'sad' to list her old flat
which she lived in for nine years before buying a three-bedder in Dulwich Hill for $1.59million
the Woollahra property is on the top floor of a delightful art deco block situated in one of Sydney's most sought after postcodes
French doors and a freshly renovated marble kitchen
Other highlights include a new bathroom with aged brass fittings and a 'natural' stone vanity
the property is worth as much as $900-a-week as a rental
Days ago, Edwina had given a very hopeful health update about her recent heartbreaking cancer diagnosis.
The Sunrise star, 41, revealed she had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML)—a type of blood and bone marrow cancer—live on air in September.
the TV presenter has revealed she is nearing 'molecular remission'
saying her leukaemia is 'almost undetectable now'
'I am almost in what they call molecular remission,' she wrote
thanks to my daily medication and my incredible specialist
and also really the gift of time that I've been given by Seven
by working part-time here at Sunrise to focus on my health
the leukaemia has essentially been eradicated from my body to the point that it's almost undetectable now.'
Edwina went on to say she is still required to take medication for at least the 'next few years'
but doesn't let that overshadow the 'fantastic news'
'I still need to take tablets for the next few years' she said
and I do share it this morning knowing lots of people are watching this going through their very own serious cancer battles
so it's not lost on me how extraordinarily lucky I have been,' she said
It comes after Edwina revealed at Marie Claire's International Women's Day luncheon in Sydney just how much the cancer diagnosis has impacted her life
'I was fortunate that I had a month where I knew about it before I told everyone
I had this experience without having to go through the trauma of chemotherapy,' Edwina began
I didn't have to go through a really intense experience of being 'in' cancer and absorbed by it.'
Edwina added she was extremely grateful her symptoms were manageable and she was able to continue with most of the activities in her daily life
'I had a meeting with my specialist this week and I forgot to go get my blood test
that I have been able to continue on semi-normal..
It's been a real re-think in slowing myself down.'
Edwina's diagnosis is a 'mild' form of leukaemia and can often be managed without having to undergo chemotherapy and dealing with the disease's more severe symptoms.
The TV presenter shares two young children—Molly, five, and Tom, three—with her husband Neil Varcoe.
In September, Edwina revealed live on-air she had been diagnosed with cancer in a tearful admission.
'I have been diagnosed with cancer. That's a shock and hard to say,' she told viewers.
'It is a really good kind. It is called chronic myeloid leukaemia. It can be treated with a daily tablet. If I can take care of myself, I will be completely fine.'
The veteran TV star then began to break down in tears before telling the audience: 'I thought I could keep it together.'
According to Mayo Clinic, CML is an uncommon type of cancer in the bone marrow and is very slow to progress.
Advances in treatment have improved the prognosis of people with CML and most people diagnosed with it can achieve remission and live for many years.

Prime minister calls vandalism in Woollahra a ‘hate crime’ as NSW premier promises ‘massive’ police response
Cars and buildings have been vandalised with anti-Israel graffiti in Sydney’s east with the New South Wales premier condemning the attack as “shocking” antisemitism
Emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle on fire in Magney Street
two buildings and the footpath along Magney Street
NSW police said the car set on fire was likely stolen and had been driven to Woollhara by the perpetrators
who had then torched it to destroy evidence
“It was not a resident’s car,” assistant police commissioner Peter McKenna told reporters
“So it’s the graffiti itself and the antisemitic remarks that they have spray-painted on those houses and footpaths that we are investigating.”
The NSW premier, Chris Minns
said the vandalism in Woollahra was a “hate crime” and an “antisemitic attack”
“Civic and civil society is completely appalled by these acts of violence,” he told reporters
“This is an attack on our community and the Jewish community in Sydney. It is antisemitic and needs to be met with a full response from NSW police and the NSW government.”

the suggestion [in the graffiti] that they should kill Israel
the sequence of events following the burning down of a synagogue in Melbourne
the demonstrations outside religious institutions”
Minns said there had to be “zero tolerance when it comes to people that want to … rip apart our community”
The premier told reporters he had spoken to Israel’s ambassador to Australia to assure him “we regard this as a disgusting display of antisemitism and the vast
vast majority of people that live in NSW are horrified by it and recognise Israel as an ally and friend of Australia”

“Offensive” graffiti was also spotted on the walls of a construction site in Arncliffe on Monday night by NSW police
Pictures in media outlets showed the graffiti praised Hitler and included antisemitic tropes

“I stand with the Jewish community and unequivocally condemn this attack,” the prime minister said
“There’s no place for antisemitism in this country
“This is an attack on people because they happen to be Jewish
The idea that we take a conflict overseas and bring it here is something that is quite contrary to what Australia was built on
which is one where we have great strength [that] comes from the fact that people can live with different faiths
“We need to find the people who did this and really show that … it is unacceptable.”
said the Albanese government was seeking to “continually demonise Israel”
“Jewish Australians quite rightly feel besieged and threatened right now
they feel that the government and their political leaders are letting them down.”
Albanese on Wednesday said it was a time for unity – not divisive comments seeking political advantage.
Police wanted to speak with two people believed to have been in the vicinity at the time, who had slim builds, were aged between 15 and 20 and had face coverings and dark clothing.

Watch 14m Sarah Ferguson speak to Allegra Spender, the federal member representing the area in Sydney.
PRIME MINISTER: I unequivocally condemn these shameful acts of violence aimed at the Jewish community
NSW PREMIER: This is an attack on our community and the Jewish community in Sydney
NSW POLICE COMMISSIONER: What happened last night is disgusting
JASON OM: Amid ever rising fears in the Jewish community of further escalation
NSW JEWISH BOARD OF DEPUTIES: This is the latest incident
the latest attack in a sustained campaign of intimidation
harassment and terror against the Jewish community
JASON OM: Overnight in Sydney’s inner suburb of Woollahra a car was set alight
walls and footpaths vandalised with graffiti
KAREN WEBB: There is still a very active crime scene investigation at that location in Woollahra
and police have been working around the clock to follow all leads
JASON OM: Police here have closed off the street and this morning forensic investigators were searching for clues
Two men believed to be in their late teens or early 20s were seen leaving the scene in disguises
This is the second attack in this suburb in three weeks
NSW POLICE ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER: We will get to the bottom of this
We do not believe that the two attacks are linked at this stage
buildings graffitied and Matt Moran’s famous Chiswick restaurant
This latest attack has left some residents rattled
VOX POP: It was kind of scary in the middle of the night
JASON OM: Rabbi Rafi Kaiserbleuth from a nearby synagogue came to inspect the street
Are you worried that this seems to be escalating
people have been given permission to act on their base instincts
and we need to work even harder to put those back where they come from
JASON OM: What security measures have you put in place now
RAFI KAISERBLEUTH: Quite a bit which I’m not at liberty to discuss
JASON OM: The attack comes just days after Melbourne’s Adass Israel synagogue was firebombed in what police say was an act of terrorism
But there’s been growing frustration among some in the community about the response to antisemitism in Australia
ANTISEMITISM SPECIAL ENVOY (Monday): We haven’t seen the policing really be active
a lot of the policing has been let’s keep the peace
JASON OM: Today the New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb joined the Premier and community members in condemning antisemitism
The commissioner said police would be increasing their response under Operation Shelter launched after the October 7 attack last year
KAREN WEBB: They will be tasked to engage with the community
the antisemitism special envoy Jillian Segal has said she hasn’t seen enough active policing
Has New South Wales Police done enough to..
KAREN WEBB: I'm not sure whether she’s talking about New South Wales but let me say Operation Shelter has been running since October 23
Seventh October post that day our operation has been running and we’ve been committed to that ever since
inquiry has been made of police has been investigated
Every complaint of racism reported to police has or is under investigation
JASON OM: Does there need to be more patrols in Jewish communities
KAREN WEBB: I think that’s the commitment today is increasing patrols
JASON OM: At one of Australia’s oldest synagogues in Sydney’s CBD
Rabbi Benjamin Elton says many in the community are on high alert
THE GREAT SYNAGOGUE SYDNEY: I feel less safe than I did
I think it’s either a miracle or good luck that no one has been seriously hurt or even killed in these three violent attacks each one of which included setting fire to cars or indeed a synagogue
We’ve escaped without any injuries or death so far I'm very concerned that our luck will run out
JASON OM: He’s welcomed today’s police response but believes a stronger police presence in Jewish communities is needed
Would you like to see more police on the streets tonight
It shouldn’t be left to the local police force in Sydney city to do it or those that look after Woollahra
They should be mobilised from wherever they are needed and sent to the areas which require a physical show of force and a show of security and intent to enforce that security
PRESENTER: The attack happened in the federal seat of Wentworth
who joined the Prime Minister today at an event at the Sydney Holocaust Museum
SARAH FERGUSON: How can Jewish people in your community be made to feel safe
ALLEGRA SPENDER: I think this is a lot about the policing and today I met with the New South Wales Police Minister
and local police in the Eastern Suburbs as well as the city about how we can do that and that is about
firstly about the visible policing is really
really important and I'm reassured to know that the police are going to those key Jewish locations such as synagogues and schools
I think that message really needs to get out there
I think the other way is also really making sure that people who have committed these terrible crimes are brought to justice and I think it's really important to recognise right now that those people
two weeks ago who vandalised and firebombed a car in the Eastern Suburbs
That is really important because I think we need to
they will feel safe when any actions have real consequences and
SARAH FERGUSON: Those people you are referring to are in custody awaiting trial so
you're talking about policing specifically Jewish locations
the attacks that took place last night were not on Jewish locations
they were just located in the Eastern Suburbs
the truth is I think the community will feel safe when these stop and when also the graffiti which I see everywhere
I saw some yesterday from Centennial Park which said
‘Kill the Jews’ on one of the street signs
When that stuff stops and I think we just need to recognise that this sort of behaviour has no place here in this country and it should not be tolerated and
when people are committing that sort of graffiti
that's what my community is really seeking right now
SARAH FERGUSON: Do you think policing to this point has been inadequate
I think that the community is really frustrated that they feel there has been an emphasis on keeping the peace
I understand that the police are trying to take the temperature down and trying to avoid conflicts and confrontations
I really appreciate that's what the police are trying to do but I raised this with the police today that when members of the community are told
You would never ask somebody to take off a headscarf or any sort of behaviour like this
I think we need to not only make sure that we don't have confrontations but we need to make sure that people can go around in their lives expressing their faith in an appropriate and reasonable way
SARAH FERGUSON: Is there a direct correlation then in your opinion between permissiveness in relation to hate speech and actions like the one we saw last night and indeed the heinous act in Melbourne last week
words matter what politicians say and words matter what community leaders say and certainly there have been some really awful things said by some extremist preachers
People who called for things like the final solution with the Jews
Under our current laws that sort of language is not
is not able to be addressed under our current situation
We have some laws in front of the parliament at the moment
but I personally believe they need to be strengthened to include serious vilification as well
SARAH FERGUSON: You were at the Sydney Holocaust Museum with the Prime Minister today
but criticised for weakness generally in relation to the rise of antisemitism
and then in particular for what some people described as a slow response to the events in Melbourne
Were you satisfied with his response today
I think the things that I have been asking for were
this coordination between the different levels of policing
I spoke to the Prime Minister on Sunday about that
and I think that's really positive that came forward
But I think we're going to have to wait and see
we just need to stamp it out and we're going to have to keep on the pressure
but also in how we build social cohesion as well
SARAH FERGUSON: But this is a problem that has now been present in this society since October
I want to reference the attack on Josh Burns’ office
sledgehammers were used against his electorate office
wasn't that enough of a warning of very ugly sentiments embedding in the community
I think that was absolutely shocking and I think with 20/20 hindsight we should have done
should have done more and pushed further on
looking at every single option we have to really
SARAH FERGUSON: Does that mean the Prime Minister did move too slowly to act
I would love to have seen more done at that time
but I think that where we are now is where we need to go
We're not the only country in the world that is struggling with antisemitism
and I think we are trying to work out how to solve it - everybody
I would have loved to have seen more done then
I would loved to have never have seen these attacks but they have happened and I think now we need to keep on pushing forward
SARAH FERGUSON: At the same time there has been criticism of the Opposition Leader Peter Dutton for politicising particularly the attack on Melbourne
but again the general issue of antisemitism in Australia
Do you think that he has politicised the issue
ALLEGRA SPENDER: I'm trying to avoid the political commentary altogether and the reason I am trying to do that is because I don't think this is helping us right now
we met with the New South Wales Police Minister
state and federal government of all political hues and descriptions
We all hate antisemitism; we all see there's no place for it here and I think that's what we really need to be doing right now
I think that's what our community wants us to be doing is uniting as much as we can
I'm going to do my best to avoid that political commentary
I don't think that's what people want from us right now
SARAH FERGUSON: These questions have been about you as the representative of your local community
I want to ask you a question about being a teal
Retiring opposition frontbencher Paul Fletcher saved his best ‘til last
In a speech he gave just before announcing his retirement he called you and your fellow teals
"A giant green left con job," no less than seven times in a speech
Not least because he insulted the voters and said
you've all been conned and look how stupid you were and I think this is where I wish the Coalition would look in the mirror and say
the community expects action on climate definitely in the next decade because it's really important
The community expects an equal representation of women in parliament
rather than two women who have been pre-selected out of 19 sitting Queensland seats
Those are the sorts of things that people expect
when Paul Fletcher goes out there and calls me names
when I spoke to the Sydney Institute I talked about economic reform
When you spoke to the Sydney Institute you talked about the teals
Why waste an opportunity and opportunity to talk about what really matters to people right now which is actually
SARAH FERGUSON: When you were asked about this earlier day
you said the current Liberal Party is now a long way from small l Liberal values
If the Opposition doesn't have small l Liberal values
ALLEGRA SPENDER: I think you have to ask them because I think they are certainly far to the right of the Liberal Party that I grew up with
But on other areas such as the nationalisation of the nuclear industry
that seems quite sort of left wing and plus the National Party
So I don't know what their values are anymore
I know what my community's values are
we care about actually kindness and frankly social cohesion
and we know that actually it's only by business succeeding that the economy succeeds overall

This contemporary retreat is set behind an unassuming neo-Georgian façade in the heart of Sydney’s Woollahra Village; a serene home designed by Australian practice Tobias Partners
the team – founder Nick Tobias and principals Matthew Krusin
John Richards and Richard Peters – aims to design ‘architecture that will uplift
and have the power to transform people’s life experience’
Their latest project in Woollahra involves the remodelling of a neo-Georgian house on a quiet residential street and was led by Matt Krusin
Complementing the adjoining terrace houses
arranged around a tranquil courtyard garden
‘Our clients were returning to Sydney after an extended time spent overseas
bringing with them a lifetime’s collection of art
books and belongings from their travels,’ explain the architects
‘They chose to keep their new home modest in footprint and height – opting for just two storeys rather than the permitted three – to maximise natural light throughout the day
Woollahra Village House’s street façade
featuring traditional sash windows with multiple small panes
is mirrored and updated in the house’s striking new back façade
a grid of four floor-to-ceiling glazed panels that looks like an oversized
The architects deliberately raised the garden to allow a magnificent existing Chinese elm to sit undisturbed
This also means that the lush greenery is now at eye level in the main living space
with beautiful oak joinery by Saltwater Joinery providing plenty of storage space in the kitchen and adjoining library
‘The new configuration of the roofs of the main residence completely changes the nature of the house by creating two opposing pitched roofs allowing both bedrooms light and cross ventilation all day
with a sunken roof in between over the bathroom,’ explains Krusin
escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox
the two ensuite bedrooms have walls clad in soft lime mottled plaster
The back bedroom opens onto the courtyard and elm tree
A staircase with floating treads allows natural light to reach the centre of the house
‘The staircase void is topped by an oak framed full-width skylight that filters light through operable portals into other spaces,’ says Krusin of this key element
‘The top flight of dog-legged stair floating to further allow light to filter down into the kitchen from above.’
with a self-contained studio room above to accommodate visitors
It's a perfectly judged composition of materials
‘Creating the flanking brickwork walls was a huge undertaking
but incredibly exciting and rewarding,’ explains Krusin
‘The walls had to contain zinc roofing and steel portals
so they’re as wide as the width of the brick
which contain pins to connect the steel hoods and zinc roof
doing hand sketches to work out how the steel hoods would connect into the brickwork
we were trying to work it out in finessing detail and junctions from one material to another
the bricklayers were working out how to lay the bricks onto the structure without impacting the neighbours
and the engineer was telling us how often we needed support for the bricks,’ continues Krusin
‘It was a great team effort and that is what we are so often proud of
We did not stop until everything was perfectly aligned and looking as effortless and timeless as we always strive for in our work.’
Tobias Partners is currently working on a new off-form concrete house with vaulted roofs that steps down a steep corner site overlooking Double Bay
‘This is very present from the public domain and so deep consideration needed to be given to the building in the round from all sides as well as ensuring privacy for the clients on a day to day basis,’ says Krusin

The son of slain bikie boss Mick Hawi is one of the nine people charged over the spate of antisemitic attacks in Sydney
as police investigate the possibility of foreign actors and organised crime being responsible for the incidents
Adam Hawi was last week charged over his alleged role in the lead-up to an incident in Woollahra in November

Police say estimated value of damage is close to $100,000
Detectives will allege that Hawi’s car was used in the attack and that he refused to tell detectives who was driving it
Investigators have issued the 21-year-old with a future court attendance notice
and he is expected to attend Waverley Local Court in March
each charged with 14 counts of destroying or damaging property
along with trespassing offences and offensive behaviour charges

the former national president of the Comanchero
was assassinated as he left Rockdale’s Fitness First in 2018
That murder was the first in a long series of fatal public place shootings in attempts to control the city’s lucrative drug trade
The elder Hawi had been convicted for murder over the notorious 2009 Sydney Airport brawl between the Comanchero and Hells Angels that killed Anthony Zervas
but successfully appealed his conviction in 2014
AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw this week said police were investigating whether “overseas actors or individuals have paid local criminals in Australia to carry out some of these crimes in our suburbs”
NSW Police sources have previously said some of the attacks bear the hallmarks of organised crime murders
including using stolen cars and cloned number plates

men responsible for a fire at a Bondi Beach brewery fronted court over the attack
Court documents revealed they asked if they had been given the wrong location and whether they would still be paid after a furious spray from the man who had sent them to light it
“Use [sic] f---ed the whole thing now If use [sic] f---ing couldn’t do it from the start then why did use [sic] even went there for f--- me It’s not even 2% burned f--- me dead,” a person using the name “James Bond” on an encrypted messaging app wrote to Guy Finnegan the day after a botched fire at beachside Curly Lewis Brewery
The failed fire was deliberately lit on October 17 by Finnegan
Despite the fuel poured in the entryway of the Campbell Parade business
it self-extinguished in about a minute but caused $65,000 worth of damage
Finnegan and Bantoft questioned whether they would still be paid and whether they had been sent to the wrong address
“So what now,” Bantoft texted Finnegan the next day
Bantoft said “James Bond” continued to send angry messages

Finnegan said later: “I’m starting to think he has sent us to the wrong place LoL.”
Damage from the fire at Lewis’ Continental Kitchen
established to investigate the spate of antisemitic attacks that have been plaguing Sydney for months
have been investigating whether the fire at the brewery was the result of a mix-up
with the intended target being a Jewish business hit by fire three days later
a kosher catering business and deli 1200 metres from the brewery
caught fire in the early hours of October 20
Police initially said the fire was not suspicious
but later appealed for information and footage
have since been charged over the fire at Lewis’ Continental Kitchen
Neither Bantoft nor Finnegan have been charged over the second fire
Bantoft is being held on remand on unrelated matters and will return to Waverley Local Court in March for sentencing
Finnegan was sentenced on Wednesday to 10 months’ imprisonment for damaging property by fire as part of an 18-month aggregate sentence for a range of offences

asking to be released on bail through his barrister
Rodger told the court the trip to Bali was a holiday booked before the alleged graffiti spree
Police prosecutor Andrew Maldigri told the court Farhat had searched for the location of a local Jewish hospital
not the Israeli embassy – meaning the attack was allegedly “targeted towards Jewish people”
“He wasn’t looking up the location of the Israeli embassy
but the location of the Jewish hospital,” the prosecutor said
The court heard forensic evidence linked Farhat and a co-accused to a car used in the attack
Farhat has a large Hezbollah tattoo running from his collar up his neck; Maldigri said it was a sign of “brazen” support for the terrorist organisation
“If someone is as brazen as to get a tattoo of a swastika on their neck it would go toward the risk to the community,” the prosecutor said
Magistrate Susan Horan refused his application for bail
despite a $500,000 surety offered by Farhat’s “pro-social” family
The attack was condemned by both Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns
as part of a wave of anti-Israel vandalism
Conflict overseas cannot be made a platform for prejudice at home,” Albanese said

Woollahra was hit with a second wave of vandalism
with more cars burnt and anti-Israeli messages spray-painted on homes
There is no suggestion this attack is linked to Farhat

Police will increase patrols amid safety concerns to the Sydney community after a prominent Jewish suburb came under attack again
with a manhunt underway for two young masked men
A major manhunt is underway for two young men suspected of spray-painting antisemitic slurs on homes in a second attack on a prominent Jewish community
Firefighters extinguished the flames that seriously damaged a red Toyota Corolla parked on the road
while officers said "two buildings" and a footpath were vandalised
The latest attack comes just three weeks after Woollahra was targeted by two perpetrators - who are before the court - after several cars and homes were damaged
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb on Wednesday confirmed the ongoing of Operation Shelter
a coordinated police response first established days after October 7 last year when terror group Hamas attacked Israel and led to ugly protests in Sydney
The operation will see more officers deployed to Woollahra and other suburbs across the city amid the heightened tensions
"What happened last night is disgusting and there is no place for hate of this nature in Sydney or anywhere in Australia," Comm Webb said at a joint press conference with NSW Premier Chris Minns
"We will be using all our resources to investigate this matter."
She stressed there may not be an outcome for days as detectives are actively interviewing Woollahra residents and collecting evidence to track the men down
were spray-painted with hate speech including one phrase that read "kill Israiel" (sic)
Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna provided further details on the attack
saying the car that was set on fire may be stolen and was driven there by the perpetrators
It is believed the pair drove to the city's east
and then spray-painted a slur on the Corolla before setting it on fire and fleeing the scene
Asst Comm McKenna said the first and second attack are not believed to be linked
He also reiterated that extra resources have been deployed to investigate the latest incident and officers will increase engagement with the on-edge Jewish community
"I would like to say to the community we are with you
we have worked very closely with our Jewish community
"We can surge resources into these things at any given time and that is what we will be doing
because we want people to not only be safe but to feel safe and we will take any questions if you have them."
Mr Minns said he is concerned about the rising antisemitic attacks across Australia
in reference to the firebombing of a Melbourne synagogue late last week
The NSW Premier added he did not want to "sugarcoat or downplay" the incident
saying be believed the Woollahra attack was "designed" to incite hate and intimate
The government is working closely with Jewish communities
leaders and synagogues to ensure their safety particularly in the lead up to Hanukkah later this month
In a subtle swipe to Prime Mininster Anthony Albanese - who is facing increasing pressure to address antisemitism - Mr Minns admitted more can be done to stamp out hate
And I'm not closing the door to changes to the law," he said in response to a reporter's question
"We cannot have a situation where we are importing conflicts around the world onto the streets of Sydney and saying
it's just inevitable because something happened on the other side of the world'
That is not going to be the case in Australia."
Mr Minns later visited the crime scene on Magney St with senior police and President of the NSW Jewish Board David Ossip as forensic officers searched for clues
Police earlier could be seen examining a burnt jerry can
Woollahra and Jewish resident Michelle Gold told Sky News she was going about her usual morning when her kids told her a "movie" was being filmed nearby
Ms Gold wandered to the family home's balcony and noticed police tape
news cameras and journalists holding live crosses back to respective studios
"The sad part is it's not movie and I've got to explain it to my children
We've seen a synagogue in Melbourne burnt down," she said to senior reporter Kenny Heatley
"It started with what happened on the Opera House steps
And it should have been nipped in the butt in October a year ago
"And it's been allowed to fester and continue on
All citizens of Australia deserve the right to live in peace and harmony and practice their religion freely
"I don't understand why the Jewish community is being targeted in this way."
Ms Gold claims there have been other incidents outside of the two antisemitic attacks happening in the suburb
saying she has increasing fears for the safety of her kids

Burgeoning developer Toohey Miller is continuing its expansion into Sydney's most expensive property markets
The developer, led by third-generation family member Nick Couloumbis whose grandfather founded Toohey Miller back in 1955 as an architecture practice, is heading to Woollahra
where they've convinced 16 owners to team up and part ways with their units in an interconnected
Two basement levels will provide 31 parking spaces
while the huge four-bedroom penthouse will occupy the whole top floor and also have access to its own private rooftop terrace
The existing building was considered for adaptive reuse; however
it does not comply with current Building Code of Australia (BCA) standards concerning accessibility
the decision was made to demolish the current structure and replace it with a new residential development that pays homage to nearby heritage and contributory buildings
The site is located within the Woollahra Heritage Conservation Area (HCA) and the Rosemont Precinct
It is adjacent to a heritage-listed item on its east side
The development aims to respect the heritage items in the vicinity and the heritage significance of the HCA
enhancing the streetscape and contributing positively to the area
Although the new building will be taller than the existing structure
it has been designed to minimise any adverse visual impact on nearby heritage items and the HCA
Tall mature trees will largely obscure the view of the new development
and materiality have been planned to be sympathetic to the surrounding heritage items and the HCA and the use of face brick will align with the existing inter-war flat buildings in the Rosemont Precinct
enhancing the site's streetscape presentation
Since announcing themselves on the development scene in 2022, Toohey Miller has been busy acquiring sites across some of Sydney's best suburbs
