Port of Antwerp Bruges is closely monitoring developments around US import tariffs and says that so far there have been no significant traffic shifts directly linked recent trade policy measures taken by the US or European Union In a statement the port authority said “a marked increase in exports to the US has not materialised” Antwerp Bruges terminals exported more than 613,400 TEUs in 2024 It outlined that the US is the second-largest global trading partner for the ports and has been for two decades It reported that maritime trade volume totalled 28m tonnes in 2024 accounting for around 10% of the joint ports’ overall cargo traffic Container exports from the ports (613,437 TEUs) mainly consisted of automotive and machinery parts 206,000 finished vehicles were shipped by ro-ro vessel from the ports to the US while 76,000 vehicles were imported from there This makes Antwerp Bruges responsible for over a quarter of Europe’s transatlantic finished vehicle traffic Read more about vehicle shipments from Antwerp-Bruges in our annual review of the top European vehicle-handling ports Container exports to the US from Antwerp-Bruges rose by 3.2% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year which the port authority said is below the overall container traffic increase of 4.6% Car exports declined by 19.5% for the quarter to 37,743 in line with the overall decline in car exports (-13.5%) “Although the direct impact remains limited for now it is clear that further developments in trade tariffs and geopolitical tensions could affect the logistics chain,” said the port authority in a statement “Port of Antwerp Bruges remains in close contact with companies and terminals active in container shipping and is continuously monitoring the situation.” Since April 3 vehicles and car parts from Europe have been subject to a 25% tariff The EU has announced its own countermeasures including €18 billion worth of industrial and agricultural products both sides have temporarily paused measures during a 90-day negotiation window this means a provisional 10% import tariff applies during the negotiation period In a press conference held at the end of January this year the Port of Antwerp Bruges’ CEO Jacques Vandermeiren said that ports were now having to deal with a world less organised by shared rules and moving more into a world in which competing trading blocs were living by their own rules He noted the uncertainty caused by Donald Trump’s return to the Whitehouse and the raft of tariff threats made in his first week there Vandermeiren said the trend toward tariffs on trade including those taken by the EU against China though he noted that Chinese carmakers seemed largely undaunted and ready to absorb the additional import costs USMCOC’s "Last year before the [Belgian league] playoffs I told her we wanted to do something crazy, and in the end winning the title was the result. "Am I deeply religious? No, but I do feel that it is something for me. I must believe there is something," Hayen added. He signed a permanent deal as coach in June and has steered Brugge into this season's Champions League playoff, plus second place in the Belgian standings. He said he expected a tough night in Bergamo on Tuesday. "Atalanta will definitely play more attacking. At home they also want to be more dominant. They also have the team for that, so we expect a difficult evening," he said. "We have to play our own game and especially show the tactical discipline of last week. "My plan for the match hasn't changed because it was 2-1 last week. We did very well, because Atalanta is a very strong team. I believe in my squad. The pace was high, helped by a strong tailwind. A powerful Tim Declercq and his colleagues made sure the breakaway never got too far. (Spada/LaPresse via AP) BERGAMO, Italy (AP) — Chemsdine Talbi had dazzled observers last week with his tremendous dribbles, precise crosses and strong ability to win both attacking duels and recover the ball in defense. In addition, the Belgian-Moroccan player had delivered an assist to Ferran Jutglà in a man-of-the-match performance that helped Club Brugge to a 2-1 win over Atalanta in the first leg of their Champions League playoff. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder did it again Tuesday in the Italian city of Bergamo. This time, he turned from provider to scorer — twice in a 3-1 victory. And Brugge advanced to the last 16 of Europe’s top tournament with a 5-2 aggregate win at the expense of the Europa League holders. The Belgian champions had progressed from the league phase in 24th place, the final qualifying berth. Talbi broke the deadlock in Brugge’s first attack, putting the Belgian side ahead after only three minutes. He was at the conclusion of a fast move after Hans Vanaken found Jutglà, who passed the ball to Talbi to his right inside the box for his teammate to slot the ball into the back of the net at the far corner. That was just the beginning of his show of class. Talbi doubled his team’s lead on the evening in the 27th minute after another slick move with a shot from the rebound following goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi’s reflex save. Jutglà then made it 3-0 with a powerful strike just before halftime. Atalanta pulled one back in the 46th through Ademola Lookman. The Italian team had the best chances — 89 attacks and 28 attempts. It missed a golden opportunity to reduce the gap when Lookman saw his poor effort from the penalty spot saved by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with 29 minutes left to play. Atalanta captain Rafael Toloi lost his temper in the closing stages and was shown a red card after angrily chasing down and bumping into Maxim De Cuyper. A fast player with great technique, Talbi grew up in Molenbeek and was trained in Tubize-Braine before he joined Brugge in 2015. He made his debut with the U23 squad three years ago before joining the first team in 2023. Writing by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; Editing by Peter Rutherford The Lidl-Trek women were in high spirits this morning on the start podium in Brugge. With little wind and bright sunshine, conditions were perfect for racing. For much of the race, the peloton remained tightly controlled. Two riders eventually found the courage to attack, but their move was short-lived. Then, with just over 30 kilometers to go, 18-year-old Cat Ferguson launched a bold solo move. However, the peloton had one clear goal: a bunch sprint. Ferguson’s lead never stretched beyond 30 seconds, and with two kilometers to go, her impressive effort came to an end. A massive crash threatened to disrupt the finale, but the top sprinters managed to avoid the chaos. Unlike yesterday’s dramatic finish, this time all the big names were in position to contest the sprint. The Lidl-Trek lead-out train executed their plan to perfection, with Clara Copponi delivering Elisa Balsamo into prime position. Elisa gave it her all, but in the end, she had to settle for third place behind Lorena Wiebes and Chiara Consonni. I really have to thank my teammates. They did an amazing job with a perfect lead-out. My legs weren’t at their best today, and the first two riders were simply stronger, but I’m really happy with the team’s performance. I knew the finish well and wasn’t worried about crashing because we stayed perfectly positioned at the front the whole time. Wiebes is incredibly strong and she deserves the win. The E3 Saxo Classic delivered the promised spectacle, with action from start to finish and a well-earned podium spot for Mads Pedersen after a fantastic race. (AP Photo/Peter Dejong) City flirted with a disaster before rallying to beat Club Brugge 3-1 in a must-win game. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, and then sitting 26th in the live standings, the 2023 title-winner was sparked by substitute Savinho to avoid elimination. The French champion impressed again after a crucial 4-2 comeback win over Man City one week ago, and rose to 15th place. Still, that puts PSG on a path to meet either Liverpool or Barcelona in the round of 16 in March if it wins an all-French playoff against either Monaco or Brest. Liverpool topped the standings despite a 3-2 loss with a weakened team at PSV Eindhoven, and Barcelona ended runner-up after a 2-2 draw with Atalanta. Only the top eight teams go direct to the round of 16 and that excludes Madrid, which won 3-0 at Brest, and Bayern, a 3-1 winner against Slovan Bratislava. Inter Milan, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid sealed top-eight finishes as expected with low-key wins. Inter beat Monaco 3-0, Arsenal won 2-1 at Girona and Atletico won 4-1 at Salzburg, which had a woeful campaign. Bayer Leverkusen, Lille — which thrashed Feyenoord 6-1 — and Aston Villa completed the top eight. Stuttgart dropped to 26th place and was eliminated along with Dinamo Zagreb, despite its 2-1 win over AC Milan whose United States playmaker Christian Pulisic had leveled the game. Milan can face Juventus in the playoffs round. Brugge took the 24th qualification place ahead of Dinamo on the tiebreaker of goal difference. An unprecedented Champions League night of 18 games playing at the same time — completing the new 144-game opening phase format – ended with no shock exits though final standings that defied expectations. Three English teams finished in the top eight but not Man City. Two Spanish teams finished in the top eight but not Real Madrid. The one German team in the top eight is not Bayern, and the one French team is not PSG. Those four wealthy powers of European soccer found the new eight-game format trickier than expected. They now have the burden of two extra games on back-to-back midweeks in February to earn round of 16 places that were routine in the old group-stage format. Villa joined Liverpool and Arsenal in the top eight by beating Celtic 4-2 to rise to 16 points — the cut that meant avoiding the playoffs. UEFA’s preseason prediction of eight points to enter the knockout phase proved far off the mark. Dinamo got 11 points and still was eliminated, ensuring no team from eastern Europe will be in the knockout phase. The lowest-ranked country in Friday’s playoffs round draw is Scotland, whose champion Celtic finished 21st, one place and one point above Man City. The referee pointed to the penalty spot, and Hans Vanaken converted to the delight of the crowd at Jan Breydel Stadium the Belgian champions were the better side on the night forcing Martinez to make several key saves to keep his team in the game Unai Emery's side, who had won their opening three games of their first appearance in Europe's elite club competition in 41 years, have nine points after four matches, leaving Liverpool top of the table as the only team with a 100% record Brugge moved provisionally up to 20th in the table on six points It was an unfortunate Champions League debut for Mings who recently returned after being out for 445 days due to a knee injury The penalty was the only goal Villa have conceded in their European club competition campaign Martinez headed directly for the officials after the final whistle to plead his case Villa's World Cup-winning keeper was pressed into action early by Brugge, who had seven shots on target to the Premier League club's one Ferran Jutglà was denied by the post before Christos Tzolis pounced on the rebound sending in a low hard shot that the Argentinian keeper pushed away with his finger tips after diving at full stretch Mings side-footed Casper Nielsen's header off the goal line, and then Martinez was forced to make a diving save again from Ardon Jashari's shot Villa's John McGinn had a terrific first-half chance after Boubacar Kamara drove into the space before sending a looping ball over the top to McGinn at the back post but the Villa captain's header was just off target Villa's loss was the latest in a string of disappointing performances for Emery's side, who suffered a 4-1 league loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday on the heels of being eliminated from the League Cup by Crystal Palace Villa keeper Emi Martínez had just lined up a goal kick, sending a short pass to Mings, who then picked up the ball and gave it back to the Argentinian. They are 20th in the table after wins over Aston Villa and Sporting CP and a home draw with Juventus on matchday seven "I've been here many years in the Champions League and these types of games I've played many times," Guardiola said "Sooner or later you have to play them where if you win you go through and if you don't you go out We are here for the reasons we know that we have not been good enough and this is a situation we have lived many times." City are enduring a difficult season by their own standards, but head into the game against Club Brugge on the back of an impressive 3-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday "It's obviously a final for us," defender Josko Gvardiol said "We want to qualify for the next stage and our confidence is very good especially after the last game [against Chelsea] there is a reason they are here in the Champions League and it is not going to be easy." The genre is awash with phone-it-ins featuring as the entire supposed appeal of the thing an audience-drawing actor and a family-pleasing premise barely more detailed than: it’s Christmas see Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever (2014) Helpfully, there’s something we can do about this. Move (or, more accurately, widen) the goalposts ever so slightly, to include not just films whose primary subject is Christmas but also films that provably take place during the festive period, and a whole host of bangers become fair game for festive viewing Die Hard is the obvious one here given the amount of debate its potential Christmas Movie status has generated in recent years and we’re liable to overlook the best Christmas-set film of them all A 2008 comedy-thriller that takes place in the lead-up to Christmas in one of the most Christmassy-looking film locations you’re ever likely to see on screen That 2008 comedy-thriller is of course In Bruges after Ray made a bit of a balls-up of their last job—the kind of balls-up where you shoot and kill a child more mature Ken is happy moseying around the beautiful streets of Bruges ("It's in Belgium," as Ray tells us as narrator) taking canal boat tours and going to see a bit of Jesus’s blood in an old church with all of that fantastic toddlerness that perhaps only Colin Farrell can summon Belgium having little more to offer than “chocolates and child abuse” as far as he’s concerned they float around in this purgatorial state and Ray’s boredom (or perhaps just innate rebelliousness) makes for plenty of mischief—his punching of an “American” tourist (who turns out to be Canadian) in the name of avenging John Lennon his goading of a (this time genuinely) American family into chasing him around the square after he tells them they’re too overweight to climb the clock tower And a lot of it is a lot more fun than the sort of mischief a hitman typically gets up to When Harry tells Ken the real purpose of their trip—a final holiday followed by a swift execution for Ray to be carried about by Ken—the laughs fade to black as Ken contends with whether or not he’s going to be able to kill a man whose extensive whining he has clearly hated tolerating but who we suspect he might still consider Brendan Gleeson’s gruff stoicism is perfect in this moment When he opts for the personal and professional sacrifice that he knows letting Ray escape will constitute no wrestle with any inner demon wrought on his face There’s only a resolute acceptance of the consequences of what he’s decided was absolutely the right decision Ralph Fiennes is also brilliant fanatically and fantastically losing the rag as Harry while Gleeson’s Ken calmly informs him of his decision to let Ray go (Harry’s implicit acceptance of Ken’s assertion that he’s a cunt by insisting that Ken “retract that bit about my cunt fucking kids” but saying nothing about Ken’s description of Harry himself is a hall-of-fame unity of comic writing and performance) The frantic finish this sets up—in which Harry wants to kill Ray We get all of the shooting-shouting-chasing action and wrapped inside it is a grossly violent sequence that’ll shock you with its emotion while still managing to genuinely serve the action of the plot In its final moments, as the snow falls around him, Farrell's Ray delivers the heaviest bit of dialogue of the whole film. And so is completed its masterful descent—from lightness and cheer at its outset to a rumination on the nature of death itself, by the end. Merry Christmas everyone!
