supply the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL) with fifteen additional 52-metre long new-generation automated metro trainsets, at a cost of around 210 million euro[1] These new trains will complete the first batch of 27 trains already ordered by the MEL (equipped with the state-of-the-art Urbalis Fluence signalling and automated control system) The metro trainsets in this new order will replace the old VAL-208 trainsets from 2028 onwards This order is part of a general policy to modernise the Lille metro network with the aim of introducing new rolling stock and modifying the automated train control system to improve transport services on lines 1 and 2 “Alstom is delighted with this new order from the Métropole Européenne de Lille for this new-generation equipment modern and comfortable metros represent a considerable asset for improving the network and the passenger experience,” said Frédéric Wiscart Based on Alstom’s rubber-tyred metro solutions the new 52-metre metros will offer greater comfort improved accessibility and better passenger information Each train will be able to accommodate up to 545 passengers and ease passenger flow thanks to its “boa” configuration (wide gangways and open circulation without separations between the four cars) which allows passengers to move from one end of the train to the other The addition of those 15 new metros will give line 1 a fleet exclusively made up of new-generation trains passenger information will be enhanced by multimedia displays and screens located throughout the train There will be areas dedicated to people with reduced mobility and an integrated video protection system will contribute to passenger safety on board the trains and on the platforms The Lille metro’s new environmentally friendly metros are fitted with high-performance traction equipment for improved energy efficiency The trains will be equipped with the new-generation Urbalis Fluence autopilot system the first worldwide application of which is for the Métropole Européenne de Lille which embeds the system’s intelligence into the trains making them more autonomous and improving the system’s overall performance The Lille metro network will remain the most frequent metro in the world with a train running every 66 seconds during rush hour The new trains will be designed and assembled in France Six of Alstom’s sixteen sites in France are fiscal year The race for the remaining Champions League places behind Paris Saint-Germain remains wide open in the French league after Marseille drew 1-1 at Lille. With two rounds left and PSG already crowned champions, second-placed Marseille missed the chance to open up a three-point gap on Monaco after goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli's blunder in the 74th minute on Sunday (Monday AEST). The top three teams qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, with the fourth team getting a spot in the qualifying rounds.  Marseille have a one-point lead over Monaco, who won 3-1 at Saint-Etienne on Saturday, with a trio of chasing teams - Nice, Lille and Strasbourg - one point further back. Lille striker Jonathan David intercepted Rulli's attempted pass inside the box and headed the ball towards Matias Fernandez Pardo, who shot past the goalkeeper into the back of the net. Amine Gouiri had put Marseille in front in the 57th minute from Adrien Rabiot's assist. PSG secured the French league title last month with six matches to spare, but the fight for the Champions League places has not been lacking suspense. Just five points separate second-placed Marseille from seventh-placed Lyon.  Lyon's hopes of European soccer next season took a blow as the seven-time French champions lost 2-1 against Lens.  Anass Zaroury scored the winner with a superb 30-metre strike into the top corner five minutes from time, soon after Georges Mikautadze levelled for the hosts with a header.  The result left Lyon outside of the European places, six points above eighth-placed Lens. Lyon enjoyed much of the possession but lacked a cutting edge and went behind when Goduine Koyalipou scored after a corner in the 21st minute. Substitute Jim Allevinah scored his first goal for Angers in the French league as his club won 1-0 at Nantes to leapfrog their rivals and take a big step towards survival in the top division. In a match of few chances for both squads, Allevinah scored with a low strike in the 52nd minute. It was the first shot on target in the match. Allevinah, a Gabon international, came on after 20 minutes as a replacement for the injured Zinedine Ferhat. Angers moved to 14th place in the standings, one point above Nantes and two points above Le Havre, currently in the relegation playoff spot.  Le Havre won 2-1 at Auxerre to move four points above the drop zone. In the day's other match, Brest beat last-placed Montpellier 1-0. Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved. (AP Photo/Christophe Ena, File) LILLE, France (AP) — Jonathan David is considering a new contract from Lille and says his chances of staying at the French club are “50-50.” The 24-year-old Canada striker is enjoying his fifth season at Lille and tops the league’s scoring charts with 11 goals from 15 games. He is out of contract at the end of June and has reportedly been offered a two-year contract. “As the president (Olivier Létang) said several times, discussions are going on. We’re talking but no decision has been reached,” David told regional newspaper La Voix du Nord on Monday in an interview. “The door is never closed. It’s 50-50.” He is one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe and Lille risks losing him for nothing if he does not sign a new deal. However, Létang previously made it clear he would not sell David during the January transfer window. (AP Photo/Matthieu Mirville, File) PARIS (AP) — If Lille needs further motivation in its drive to qualify for the Champions League next season, then it need only look at Nabil Bentaleb’s remarkable return. The Lille midfielder scored four minutes after going on last Sunday in a 2-0 win at Rennes and was mobbed by his teammates. The 30-year-old was put into an artificial coma and fitted with a pacemaker-defibrillator days later. Doctors doubted the Algeria international would ever play again let alone resume his career at the top level. “It’s a story worthy of a movie. It brings Nabil even more joy and emotion because he is a boy who is very well liked in the group,” coach Bruno Genesio said. “It’s pretty rare to experience this. It’s a moment that will remain engraved in the history of the club.” Bafodé Diakité said the atmosphere in the dressing room after last Sunday’s win was something special. “I had never experienced anything like that,” he said. “It goes beyond football.” Now Bentaleb and his teammates must focus on catching Monaco and Nice in the Ligue 1 race for a top-four Champions League spot. Fifth-placed Lille is only two points behind Monaco and Nice in third, so things could change on Saturday when Lille hosts Monaco. When Nice takes on rock-bottom Montpellier on Sunday, former strike partners Gaëtan Laborde and Andy Delort are set to face each other amid contrasting circumstances. Laborde has nine league goals for Nice this season, while Montpellier signed Delort on loan from Algerian side MC Alger to help in its desperate relegation battle. Laborde and Delort enjoyed three full seasons together at Montpellier from 2018-21 and formed a strong partnership, with Laborde netting 33 league goals and Delort getting 38. They began the next season together before both left. Their paths quickly met again when they played half of the 2022-23 season together at Nice — before Delort joined Nantes and angered Nice fans. PSG has not lost anywhere since Nov. 26 at Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Rayan Cherki has found top form for Lyon in recent weeks and Fonseca has unearthed a surprising finisher. Veteran midfielder Corentin Tolisso has scored in all three games since Fonseca took over and is enjoying his best scoring season since the 2017-18 campaign with Bayern. (AP Photo/Christophe Ena) AP Sports Writer (AP) — Just a year ago, Bruno Genesio left Rennes amid general indifference. Back to work at Lille this season, the French coach is being hailed as a master tactician, drawing comparisons with his most famous peers. Genesio previously led Lyon to a win over Guardiola’s Manchester City, and Mourinho’s Fenerbahce lost at Lille in Champions League qualifying this summer. What is even more impressive is that the 58-year-old Genesio has handled an avalanche of injuries in his squad since he replaced Paulo Fonseca at Lille in June. The former Lyon coach needed great adaptation skills and versatility to help Lille climb to fourth place in Ligue 1. Lille has gone seven games without defeat, its longest unbeaten run since December 2023. “These results perfectly symbolize the strength of my group and the state of mind it’s in,” Genesio said after a 1-1 Champions League draw against Juventus, another side with a great European pedigree. “We only had 20 players on the team sheet, including three young players who have never played in Ligue 1.” At the various clubs he coached, Genesio has been truthful to his ideal of a game based on possession, pressing and taking risks. “He dares to do things that perhaps others wouldn’t dare to do, like fielding attacking players and pressing high up the pitch against big teams,” said Gilles Rousset, who was part of Genesio’s staff at Lyon and when he coached in China. “He likes to try and cause problems that his opponents don’t expect. It’s not for nothing that his teams often beat the big clubs,” Rousset told French magazine So Foot. Sunday’s match against Rennes will give Genesio the chance to add another win against a famed tactician: Jorge Sampaoli, the former Argentina coach, who signed an 18-month deal with Rennes during the international break. In other matches, leader Paris Saint-Germain hosts Toulouse on Friday, and second-placed Monaco takes on Brest. Third-placed Marseille travels to Lens on Saturday. Lille fight back to spark hope in return leg against Dortmund Hakon Haraldsson scored the equaliser as Lille fought back to earn a draw at Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie Dortmund had taken the lead through a brilliant strike from Karim Adeyemi in a first half in which last season's runners-up were by far the superior side But Haraldsson's goal during Lille's much-improved showing after the break put the tie in the balance before the return leg in France on Wednesday The game lacked spark in the early stages but Adeyemi produced a moment of brilliance after 22 minutes to score from a corner and put Dortmund ahead Julian Ryerson's delivery was met by Lille defender Alexsandro Ribeiro but his weak headed clearance fell for Adeyemi who planted a sublime half-volley from the edge of the box into the bottom corner Niko Kovac's side had the ball in the back of the net from a corner again before the break but the visitors were saved by the assistant referee's raised flag for offside when Pascal Gross turned in from close range Lille were barely given a look-in by the Dortmund defence in the first half and the closest they went to scoring was when Thomas Meunier exchanged passes with Haraldsson before firing into the side-netting were far more lively in the second period and deservedly secured the draw when Iceland midfielder Haraldsson ran on to a through ball from Jonathan David and poked past Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel while off-balance Lille substitute Andre Gomes was lucky to escape a late red card for an awful challenge which forced Daniel Svensson off with an injury as the visitors held on Hakon Haraldsson's equaliser was his second goal in the Champions League this season Lille have never reached the Champions League quarter-finals Bruno Genesio's side have put themselves in good stead they were a shadow of the side that beat Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to finish seventh in the competition's league phase But their performance picked up after the break with the prolific David linking up with goalscorer Haraldsson far more fluently saw his effort blocked by Svensson after wriggling through Dortmund defenders in the box seven minutes into the second half Though the Canada forward did not add to his six goals in Europe this season he still played a pivotal role in the result by providing on the continent are probably still unaware of David's existence That is made all the more bizarre by the fact he is now in the final six months of his contract at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy and will almost certainly be available on a free transfer in the summer window It is very rare for a 25-year-old boasting the talent and track record of David to be overlooked like this He should have a queue of suitors lining up for his signature already but has yet to break out of the tabloid gossip lists There is a shortage of top centre-forwards in the modern game so why on earth is no one talking about David? thanks to another one of his teammates being offside just seconds before the Dutchman put the ball into the back of the net while Dusan Vlahovic saw LIlle keeper Lucas Chevalier make a great reflex save at the near post 10 minutes before halftime You have even two of those three chances become goals and even the latest big Champions League goal from Canadian striker Jonathan David isn’t standing tall as the only goal in the first half But because of this game sometimes providing Juventus with absolutely terrible luck they were down 1-0 at the half thanks to a picture-perfect counterattack rather than being up by two or three goals and reflecting how well they were playing for much of the opening 45 minutes the frustrations of the first half didn’t cause this team to essentially become their own worst enemy and suddenly not replicate how they had been playing The team that played better Tuesday was very easy to see and it wasn’t the squad that already has wins in the Champions League over Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid Juventus had Lille pinned back and it just felt like it was only a matter of time before they actually scored with all of the terrible luck in the first half Dusan Vlahovic’s penalty at the hour mark tied the game rather than extend Juve’s lead but one of Juventus’ biggest problems this season — finishing chances in the final third — popped up once again That’s why I feel like with how they played so much of the Juventus camp will think they should have won with the way they played on the whole an away draw at a tough ground like at Lille isn’t a truly terrible result with how they had been playing the last month after a tough start to the 2024-25 season Juventus should have won this based on how they played compared to Lille And they would have with a little bit better luck It’s frustrating as all hell — especially when it’s in the Champions League and this new-look format is still taking some getting used to — but it sure is better than what happened the last time Juve played in Europe Writing by Julien Pretot; Editing by Toby Davis FT: Manchester City 3-1 Club Brugge - hosts set up play-off meeting with either Bayern or Real LILLE, France (AP) — Nabil Bentaleb, the former Tottenham and Algeria midfielder who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest less than seven months ago, is back training with his club Lille. Coach of the Ligue 1 side, Bruno Genesio, said Bentaleb resumed individual training a few days ago with a physical trainer and started practising with the ball on Monday. “I’ve seen him, and spoken to him for the past two or three days. He’s in good spirits, he’s motivated,” Genesio said. Bentaleb collapsed on June 18 while playing a five-a-side match with friends, French media reported at the time. At Lille University Hospital, he was put into an artificial coma before being fitted with a pacemaker-defibrillator days later. Bentaleb joined Lille in 2023, returning to the club where he honed his skills as a youngster. He was born in the northern French city and trained at the club academy after his talent was spotted when he was just 10 years old. After being released, he started his senior career in the Premier League with Tottenham, where he made more than 60 appearances, then joined German side Schalke. Bentaleb also played for Newcastle and Angers. Lille's Jonathan David scored twice as the French side stunned hosts Atlético Madrid with a 3-1 comeback Champions League win on Wednesday to make it two wins from their last two matches while piling more pressure on the struggling Spanish team Lille, who have their keeper and man-of-the-match Lucas Chevalier to thank for the win, have now beaten their second Madrid team in consecutive matchdays after also stunning holders Real Madrid 1-0 earlier in October David became the all-time top Canadian scorer in Champions League history with six goals while Atlético are on three with just one win from their three games so far "We had a complicated start because we conceded a goal that was avoidable," said Lille coach Bruno Genesio "In the last 15 minutes of the first half we felt we had renewed energy We had a chance to level just before the break and I was confident we would not concede a second goal and that we would have opportunities to draw level We have taken a step towards qualification we can dream of progressing to the round of 16." His team found themselves on the back foot at the start as the Spaniards went in search of an early goal They got it in the eighth minute with Julian Alvarez intercepting a weak back pass from Lille defender Ousmane Toure and slotting in to give them the lead There was more bad news for Lille when they had to take off injured midfielder Remy Cabella in the 16th minute, bringing in Edon Zhegrova Atlético had only themselves to blame for not going into the break with a far bigger advantage or even killing off the game with Alexander Sorloth wasting three golden scoring opportunities in the first half after being denied by Chevalier but we lacked efficiency after creating many scoring opportunities," Alvarez said Lille's best chance in the first half came only in stoppage time with Zhegrova firing over the bar but the introduction of the Kosovo international would later prove crucial Zhegrova whipped in a superb left-footed shot into the top far corner in the 61st to draw the visitors level Atlético almost bounced back instantly when Antoine Griezmann found himself unmarked in front of goal but his volley flew well over the bar Instead it was the French side who scored again to seal their comeback courtesy of a 74th-minute penalty by David who had also scored the winner against Real With Chevalier pulling off another superb save to keep them in the lead late in the game, Canada international David sealed their win with his second goal of the evening as his deflected effort found the net in the 89th minute Lille's Jonathan David scored twice as the French side stunned hosts Atlético Madrid with a 3-1 comeback Champions League win on Wednesday to make it two wins from their last two matches while piling more pressure on the struggling Spanish team Lille, who have their keeper and man-of-the-match Lucas Chevalier to thank for the win, have now beaten their second Madrid team in consecutive matchdays after also stunning holders Real Madrid 1-0 earlier in October \"We had a complicated start because we conceded a goal that was avoidable,\" said Lille coach Bruno Genesio \"In the last 15 minutes of the first half we felt we had renewed energy we can dream of progressing to the round of 16.\" They got it in the eighth minute with Julian Alvarez intercepting a weak back pass from Lille defender Ousmane Toure and slotting in to give them the lead There was more bad news for Lille when they had to take off injured midfielder Remy Cabella in the 16th minute, bringing in Edon Zhegrova but we lacked efficiency after creating many scoring opportunities,\" Alvarez said Atlético almost bounced back instantly when Antoine Griezmann found himself unmarked in front of goal but his volley flew well over the bar With Chevalier pulling off another superb save to keep them in the lead late in the game, Canada international David sealed their win with his second goal of the evening as his deflected effort found the net in the 89th minute Defending champions Real Madrid were beaten away at Lille on Wednesday night following a lacklustre performance The only goal of the game came via the penalty spot, with Jonathan David scoring following a handball by Eduardo Camavinga Endrick, 18, made his first start in the Champions League, on a night where Kylian Mbappe was named on the bench Tomás Hill López-Menchero analyses the key talking points from Madrid’s defeat in France It had been 36 games and almost nine months since Real last lost in any competition — a 4-2 extra-time defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey round of 16 in January — but Lille somehow did the unthinkable against Carlo Ancelotti’s side What’s more, this was Real’s first loss in the Champions League since the 4-0 humbling at the hands of Manchester City in the semi-final second leg in May 2023 Rudiger had two late, late chances — one cleared off the line, one saved by Lucas Chevalier — as Madrid looked to rescue something, as they have so often done in this competition. And Arda Guler also sent a point-blank header straight into the goalkeeper’s hands Patience has been the name of the game since Endrick signed for Madrid from Palmeiras as a 16-year-old in December 2022. The Brazilian had to wait a year and a half to turn 18 before he could join his new side under FIFA regulations he’s had to accept a secondary role from the bench with Mbappe ahead of him in the pecking order The Frenchman’s thigh injury last week appeared to give Endrick an opportunity for his first start but he was restricted to a cameo off the bench at Atletico on Sunday in the 1-1 draw in the Madrid derby So it was something of a surprise to see the Brazilian from the beginning here — making him Madrid’s youngest Champions League starter since Raul at 18 years and 73 days old but he wasn’t able to get a grip on the game There was a fine run with a finish straight at Lille goalkeeper Chevalier in the 19th minute but it was no great surprise when he was replaced around the hour mark having only produced one other shot There will be more opportunities for Endrick, who has already shown his quality with powerful efforts against Real Valladolid in La Liga and Stuttgart in Real’s Champions League opener But Madrid fans will have to be patient with him too This was once the kind of night Luka Modric and Toni Kroos would have dominated as starters for Real Madrid — but times have changed Modric is now more likely to be used from the bench at 39 (which he was last night) while Kroos’ decision to retire at 34 this summer surprised everyone This was Madrid’s youngest Champions League XI in five years at 25 years and 247 days old — and, at 26, Federico Valverde was the only player in midfield or attack older than 24 Camavinga injected some much-needed energy alongside Tchouameni and showed some bright flashes in the first half but his night soured with the penalty he gave away in first-half stoppage time — bringing his arms up from an Edon Zhegrova free kick Whether or not it was unnatural was debatable but it was cruel on a player who otherwise looked to be enjoying his return from injury A yellow card in the 59th minute and being substituted on 67 minutes summed up a frustrating night for the Frenchman Speaking at his post-match press conference Ancelotti said: “We struggled in transition We have to keep a cool head but we have to improve There is a dynamic that needs to be improved “The last defeat when we lost the derby was a fantastic wake-up call Hopefully this can be a fantastic wake-up call.” Saturday, October 5: Villarreal (home) (Top photo: FRANCK FIFE/AFP via Getty Images) Writing by Julien Pretot; Editing by Ed Osmond
