Nottingham Forest are monitoring Callum Hudson-Odoi, who came off with a hamstring issue during Thursday's league defeat by Brentford. Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said in his pre-match press conference that last weekend's FA Cup semi-final defeat had taken a lot out of his players and that he would need to manage his squad carefully. Crystal Palace have only won one of the past 14 league meetings and are winless in eight (D5, L3). Forest have never lost in nine Premier League encounters with Crystal Palace (W4, D5), the only opponent they have faced more than twice in the competition without losing. Crystal Palace are winless in four league matches (D2, L2) but they did beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals last time out. Palace are unbeaten in their past four home games (W3, D1). They conceded 14 Premier League goals in April, more than any other team, and the joint-most they had ever conceded in a single month. Palace have won just three of their last 24 Premier League matches played on a Monday (D9, L12). However, one of those came in their last home Monday game in May 2024 when they thrashed Manchester United 4-0. Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored 10 goals in his last 13 Premier League appearances. Nottingham Forest have lost four of their past five matches in all competitions. Forest could win 10 top-flight away matches in a season for just the fourth time. They have won two of their last three away league games in London. Chris Wood could become the first Forest player to score 10 Premier League away goals in a season; he currently has nine. As the new Biomass satellite settles into life in orbit following its launch on 29 April ESA has released its most extensive satellite-based maps of above-ground forest carbon to date the dataset offers the clearest global picture yet of how forest carbon stocks have changed over time Developed through ESA’s Climate Change Initiative this new long-term record integrates data from multiple satellite missions – and will soon be further enhanced by data from the Biomass mission itself It tracks the carbon-rich woody parts of vegetation across the globe for different years between 2007 and 2022 at resolutions ranging from 100 m to 50 km it is tailored to support climate and carbon modelling and national greenhouse-gas reporting activities as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Paris Agreement is a pivotal moment for climate science as it provides an unprecedented level of consistency and timeliness in the provision of above-ground biomass estimates globally “This empowers researchers and policymakers alike to track carbon dynamics with the temporal precision necessary for meaningful climate action.” Trees play a vital role in the global carbon cycle storing large amounts of carbon as biomass While this carbon stock increases as forests grow it can be rapidly released back into the atmosphere through deforestation and wildfires – contributing significantly to rising carbon dioxide levels and The dataset draws from different Earth-observing satellites including ESA’s Envisat and Europe’s Copernicus Sentinel-1 Thanks to close international collaboration particularly with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency this latest release significantly improves on the accuracy of biomass estimates and corrects long-standing underestimates in high-biomass regions Refinements to the biomass retrieval algorithm have resulted in a dataset that delivers more consistent and reliable information across the world’s forest biomes – though it remains most accurate up to 400 tonnes of biomass per hectare who leads ESA’s Climate Change Initiative Biomass Project “The new dataset provides a much more accurate representation of global forest biomass particularly in regions where earlier versions underestimated high-density forests.” Lucas added that challenges remain in capturing the most carbon-rich ecosystems “Detecting biomass densities above 400 tonnes per hectare is considerably more difficult because the relatively short wavelengths of current radar sensors don’t fully penetrate or interact with the larger woody components of dense tropical forests.” “When assessed against independent reference data from all over the world better characterisation of the states and dynamics of carbon stored in vegetation is still necessary which will be facilitated by ingesting additional satellite data from past missions which is set to transform how we assess the planet’s forest carbon stores Equipped with the first spaceborne P-band radar this pioneering satellite will be capable of penetrating thick forest canopies to measure the carbon locked in even the densest vegetation It promises to drastically reduce uncertainties in forest carbon estimates especially in tropical regions such as the Amazon “We hope and anticipate that data from the Biomass mission will be able to extend the record of biomass stored in the world’s forests with this reducing uncertainties in the global carbon cycle and its contribution to climate change,” added Prof The ESA Climate Change Initiative Biomass Dataset Version 6 is free and open: access here Read more: How Biomass the mission will be used in the Climate Change Initiative Biomass Project Above-ground biomass global datasets 2007–2022 SILVER CITY, N.M. — A wildfire located on the Iron Mesa An evacuation order for Snow Lake is in effect According to Watch Duty, the evacuation order is only for recreational facilities at Snow Lake No evacuation order has been issued for any residences Forest Service lists the following areas as at-risk: Willow Creek recreational facilities and threatened or endangered wildlife species Iron Fire is located within the Whitewater Baldy burn scar and is burning grass Several agencies are responding including the Gila Hotshots and Idaho City Hotshots two additional hotshot crews have been order and additional engines The Southwest Area Type 3 Incident Management Team has been ordered to take over management of the wildfire on Tuesday morning Any person with disabilities who needs help accessing the content of the FCC Public File may contact KOB via our online formor call 505-243-4411. On Tuesday, a federal judge rejected a request for a temporary restraining order that would have paused the camp removal drove along Horse Butte Road with Jesse Rabinowitz the day before the May 1 closure Jesse Rabinowitz drives to Shawna Roberson's trailer home while Mandy Bryant directs him through the Deschutes National Forest on Apr The two got word that law enforcement were at Roberson's trailer the campaign and communications director with the National Homelessness Law Center described the closure as the largest eviction of people living on federal land in recent memory Bryant had been living in the forest for years with her boyfriend who said he used to judge people living unsheltered before it happened to him Under the banner of updating the city’s parking code last year councilors voted to require people to move their vehicles every 24 hours Some people driven out of the city moved to more rural areas to the north to an encampment known as “Dirt World.” Others moved south which residents refer to as “China Hat” and “Horse Butte.” The Forest Service calls its plan to close this area the Cabin Butte project A recent point-in-time count showed homelessness in Bend has decreased while increasing in surrounding rural areas Deschutes Forest manager Holly Jewkes alerted local officials in a 2022 letter that city sweeps were pushing people onto federal land Thursday’s camp removals have the potential to move people back into more urban areas with tight regulations and limited resources for services The week leading up to the Cabin Butte closure both Bryant’s and Daggett’s vehicles broke down Bryant called it “a perfect storm of adding onto an already stressful moment.” She said it seemed to be happening to a lot of people who were trying to get their things together to leave Mandy Bryant looks out into the forest in the Horse Butte area of the Deschutes National Forest on Apr Bryant moved out of the Deschutes National Forest just before the May 1 closure Rabinowitz picked up Bryant and drove out to have a pizza party in the forest a goodbye event for a community where some residents have lived for years local volunteers from Bend Equity Project and The National Vehicle Residency Collective gathered to share food and support people getting their things together in the last hours before the closure Colleen Thomas supervises Deschutes County’s Homeless Services Outreach Team She said the impact of this closure feels “a lot heavier” than the sweeps in Bend some of them may have been living in this area for four “so they’ve created community and their homes are much more complex than just a tent on a sidewalk.” the Homeless Outreach Services Team supervisor for Deschutes County Bryant said that when new people would move into their area they’ll give you something today even though they know they’re going to need it tomorrow just because you need it that day,” she said As the afternoon grew long on the day before the closure Shawna Roberson was trying to bag up clothes She wore a brace to support her back and said moving was painful Roberson was one of the 80 people to file a disability claim against the U.S Department of Agriculture in an attempt to slow the looming forest closure Local advocates also sought a restraining order against the Forest Service last week a law enforcement officer had just been by “They were actually really nice today,” she said She said they told her that before midnight “we gotta be on the other side of the gate.” Shawna Roberson's walker in the Deschutes National Forest on Apr Roberson was one of 80 people who filed a disability claim with the USDA in an attempt to delay the project even as local and federal law enforcement were on site The Forest Service said people won’t be able to move in and out of the area to get things they left behind but abandoned property would be held for up to 90 days People need to be able to show proof of ownership to claim their property Webb didn’t immediately know where the items would be held or what people might do if ownership documents are inside the confiscated property Tags: Homeless, Homelessness, Bend, Central And they are almost certain to secure European football of some kind for the first time since 1995-96. There is not one Forest fan who would have sniffed at the thought of that But there has been one major change in recent weeks the expectation around the wider football world had been that Forest would slip out of contention because they were overachieving and it could not last forever There was very little pressure on the Forest players because even after being in the top four since December But as we approached the final stages of the campaign the possibility of Champions League football became a stark reality They absolutely still can get over the line if they can play with the same conviction as before Forest won three penalty shootouts on their way to the FA Cup semi-final won at Anfield and Old Trafford and beat Manchester United and Manchester City at the City Ground They have got this far on the back of tremendous spirit and belief and Forest’s almost unique identity has been at the core of their success lure them into a position where there is space to exploit and hit them on the counter-attack Forest have averaged 40.3 per cent possession The issue is that when they are allowed to dominate the ball Since promotion from the Championship in 2022 Forest have won just one of their 15 games in the competition in which they have had at least 51 per cent possession (D8 L6) they face a Palace side who have a similar mentality — they have averaged just 42.7 per cent possession at Selhurst Park Forest’s other remaining away game is at West Ham who have averaged 49.4 per cent possession at home The upcoming home games against already relegated Leicester City and Champions League qualification rivals Chelsea will have a different dynamic Leicester have conceded 42 goals in 17 away games including 14 in their last six matches on the road which has seen them collect only a single point from a 2-2 draw at Brighton They have not won any of their last 12 outings in all competitions Nuno often states that there are no easy games in the Premier League But that is a fixture that — even taking local rivalry into account — a side with Champions League aspirations should be expecting to win who visit for what feels likely to be a huge fixture on the final day have averaged the second-most possession on the road this season (59.7 per cent) behind Manchester City (60.5 per cent) The City Ground will be rocking for both of their home games; fans will ensure there is an intimidating But the challenge in their away games will be to find a way to get something from Palace and West Ham who are not teams that generally dominate on the ball Forest have never been the most prolific scorers this season The 1.53 goals per 90 they have averaged (53 goals from 34 games) puts them joint-ninth in the Premier League Where they have thrived is in their ruthless level of finishing The 52 non-penalty goals Forest have scored exceed their 40.4 xG (expected goals) by 11.6 But Forest have failed to score in three of their last four games in all competitions and they have found the net only twice in their five home games Chris Wood has scored 19 of Forest’s 53 goals He has contributed 36 per cent of his team’s tally which is a bigger percentage than any other player in the top flight Elanga has scored six and Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi — who now has a hamstring injury that makes him a doubt for the remaining games — have provided five The New Zealand international has recently been sidelined with a hip problem suffered while playing for his country in late March Wood has scored just once in nine appearances for Forest his worst run of scoring form since the first nine games of last season he was used as a sub in seven of those fixtures Wood’s contribution to Forest’s rise has been massive But in his three league games since returning from injury he has had only three shots (one on target) Wood is a player who has flourished despite a limited number of efforts on goal — he has averaged a relatively modest 1.84 per 90 during the current campaign Where he has excelled is in making the most of his opportunities His rate of 0.30 goals per shot is the most prolific in the Premier League — for comparison Wood came close to scoring against Brentford with a header And even he cannot put away the chances he doesn’t get With Forest having lost eight of the nine games in which they have not scored the first goal their ability to find their own scoring touch again will be vital The rise in trail use at forest preserves and parks throughout the region comes with words of caution from those who oversee the facilities especially when it comes to electric bicycles “We’ve seen an increase in both e-bike use on our trails and public concerns about cyclists riding too fast or unsafely,” said Beth Schirott communications specialist with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County The same is true at the Lake County Forest Preserves where e-bikes are allowed on any trail where traditional cyclists can ride “These bikes are a great vehicle for older adults or persons with mobility issues to get out and enjoy our preserves,” said Ron Davis many visitors aren’t aware that Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed in the preserves DuPage is partnering with forest preserve districts in Kane and Will counties, the McHenry County Conservation District and the Fox Valley and Naperville park districts in an initiative focused on trail safety, rider etiquette and understanding e-bike classifications and regulations The agencies are distributing pocket-size handouts with trail safety guidelines and e-bike regulations while adding social media posts and trailside signs to remind visitors of key safety messages we saw this as a good time to not only promote safe and courteous trail use but also collaborate with other agencies to raise awareness of bike regulations,” Schirott said Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach a speed of 28 mph are not permitted in those jurisdictions, nor are they permitted on Forest Preserve District of Cook County trails, which lists rules and safety guidelines on its website. Lake County also asks trail users to walk and ride on the right, pass on the left; move into single file when passing for approaching others; say, “On your left,” when passing from behind; use your voice instead of bells around horses and ask riders if it is safe to pass; and ride single file if biking in a group. At roughly 3:30 a.m. May 1, Deschutes National Forest officially closed 34,600 acres just south of Bend for a forest management project aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire and improving forest health It’s a critical project given the forest’s proximity to a population center that has grown to more than 100,000 over the past decade But the closure gated off one of the few places the city’s population of nearly 1,000 unhoused residents could reside for an extended period The camp was home to as many as 300 people at one point spread in 90 different encampments across roughly 900 acres The closure is scheduled to last about a year homeless advocates said at least 40 to 60 people remained behind the closed gates despite warnings they could be cited for $5,000 or forced to spend six months in jail executive director of the nonprofit Home More Network and a former resident of the camp said she had hundreds of phone calls and texts from “frantic people all through the day” and into the night who’d discovered they could leave the area but no longer return to retrieve their belongings “Please have compassion,” she said at a news conference where homeless advocates and members of the camp gathered to take stock of the situation and where some food and drinks were being served along Forest Road 18 And please work together in giving people an opportunity to rebuild.” She said many members of the camp had jobs didn’t use drugs and sought to live a normal life but that the combination of skyrocketing housing costs in central Oregon combined with “one bad day or a few bad decisions,” had landed them without a home and at the camp Forest Service officials said that “any abandoned property of value left within the closure area will be impounded into safe keeping for 90 days Individuals may reclaim impounded property if they can show proof of ownership." Those looking to reclaim property can call 541-383-5562 As the cost of living has exploded in central Oregon the number of people living in national forests just outside Bend and Sisters has increased dramatically In 2022, the Statesman Journal reported on a collection of people who were employed in Sisters but couldn’t afford the price of rent to live in town They commuted to work in the morning and returned home to live in RVs vehicles or tents in Deschutes National Forest The official term is “non-recreational camping,” a phrase the Forest Service uses to describe people who camp in a national forest for longer than the designated limit which in the Deschutes and most Oregon national forests is 14 days within a 30-day period have become established and become not only a home for people but also places that police and deputies took people to get them off city streets campaign and communications director for the National Homelessness Law Center said many people at the China Hat camp were actually brought to the camp by Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies A major question was where residents of China Hat would go next Some said they planned to travel to Juniper Ridge another homeless camp on federal land outside town others said they planned to try the local Walmart parking lots “They’re just displacing people and displacing people basically playing whack-a-mole with their lives And that just forces them deeper into this cycle of poverty and makes it even harder to get or keep a job get services or find housing,” Rabinowitz said Forced displacement leads to many negative impacts including the increased threat of sexual assault “People don’t know where to go,” Rabinowitz added The plan was for the Forest Service to work with local providers to find resources for the camp well before the closure happened the Forest Service said it had been collaborating with the county and local providers for months But camp residents and homeless advocates said there had been basically no action to help campers move their belongings “There’s been literally nothing,” Daggett said “The Forest did not propose or agree to coordinate transitional services and support or alternate housing solutions for unhoused community members impacted by the closure,” the Forest Service said in a statement and local service providers would be best equipped to share transitional support services and plans.” Why is the Cabin Butte Project needed?A critical reason for the Cabin Butte Project is reducing the risk of wildfire and it’s not hard to understand why it’s important once you look at a map wildfire danger has increased dramatically in the forests of central Oregon at the same time housing is moving closer than ever to the forest conduct prescribed burns and clean up hazardous materials in the area Deschutes National Forest said in a news release In June 2024, the Darlene 3 Fire, which threatened to burn La Pine, ignited at a homeless encampment outside town Other wildfires have been traced to homeless camps and in a tinder-dry forest “We understand the need for fire mitigation,” said Chuck Hemingway “But we were disappointed that there wasn’t an organized effort that would have permitted an orderly relocation of people instead of what resulted — a mass exodus that spread into the early morning.” Zach Urness has been an outdoors reporter in Oregon for 18 years and is host of the Explore Oregon Podcast. has issued the group behind a transformative and controversial development project in Castle Hayne a series of permit violations sent to Copper Builders founder Wade Miller on April 14 include building a structure without the appropriate building floodplain and Coastal Area Management Act permits which protects coastal resources from development impacts The notice is tied to what Miller described as a “premanufactured and had been put there within the past few weeks Hunters on the property had noticed the structure and New Hanover County received pictures of it triggering the notice of violations letter The county threatened fines of $100 per day unless Copper Builders removed the structure or completed commercial building application permits by April 24 Those applications have been submitted and are under review “Apparently in response to a complaint from a motivated citizen the County inquired about this use and issued a notice of violation,” Miller “We…will continue to work with the County to resolve this concern in an appropriate and legal manner.” who argue the project will negatively impact traffic “This was never meant to be developed this way,” said Julie Hurley Copper Builders has been adamant they’ll see the project through despite objections though said they have adjusted parts of their plan based on community feedback The project doesn’t need county commissioner approval a subdivision of the development will go in front of the county’s technical review committee next week to iron out more specifics whose property is a stone’s throw from a piece of the development site the notice of violations is a cause of concern “This has thrown up a lot of red flags about what possibly come as far as trustworthiness and transparency,” she said Service says the fire has consumed 950 acres of forest and remains 60% contained They say more than 80 personnel are now assigned to the incident The Black Swamp Fire was first noticed on Sunday North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and the National Park Service were called in to help with battling the wildfire The Forest Service say crews are making good progress soaking the smoldering organic materials around the perimeter of the fire with the sprinkler system Earthen dams will be installed to help in pumping more water to areas around the fire 195,000 gallons of water have been dropped on the fire by helicopters Closures remain in effect for Black Swamp Road Great Lake Boating Access Area and Sheep Ridge Wilderness Area Smoke from the fire can cause limited visibility and living in Deschutes National Forest south of Bend Deschutes National Forest will close roughly 34,600 acres that’s part of a wildfire risk reduction project on May 1 in the China Hat Road area Anyone remaining in camps in the area could be subject to fines or jail if they remain District Court Judge Michael McShane denied a request for a temporary restraining order that would have stopped or delayed the closure A lawsuit filed by homeless advocates argued the closure would “cause irreparable harm to more than 100 persons experiencing homelessness currently living within the area to be closed.” The lawsuit also sought relief for 76 other disabled China Hat Road residents The denial sets up what could become the “largest federal eviction of a homeless community in recent history,” advocates said and those of us living in the forest are trying our best to survive,” Mandy Bryant said in a statement sent by the National Homelessness Law Center “People I care about are facing the unimaginable: losing everything they own or risking one year in jail and a $5,000 fine.” The closure is moving forward to begin the long-planned Cabin Butte Vegetation Management Project The project is intended to address “critical forest restoration efforts” and will thin forest “The work aims to reduce wildfire risk and restore damaged habitats in the Wildland Urban Interface near Bend,” a news that stayed in the forest past the May 1 deadline In 2022, the Statesman Journal reported on a collection of people who were employed in Sisters but couldn’t afford the price of rent to live in town A 2015 survey conducted by the Pacific Northwest Research Station found 75% of rangers reported encountering non-recreational campers at least once a month more than half the rangers in Oregon and Washington said the amount of time they’d spent addressing homelessness had increased The situation in central Oregon creates a difficult situation Many people simply can’t afford to live even in a ignited at a homeless encampment outside of town The issue has become a flashpoint in the China Hat area outside of Bend But many people have nowhere to go if they’re evicted “This eviction is a waste Whether the administration’s move will boost lumber supplies as Trump envisioned in an executive order he signed in March remains to be seen. Joe Biden’s administration also sought more logging in public forests to combat fires, which have become more intense amid drier and hotter conditions linked to the climate crisis, yet US Forest Service timber sales stayed relatively flat under his tenure. The Cabin Butte Vegetation Management Project, a wildfire mitigation treatment on some 30,000 acres (12,000 hectares), is prompting the closures in the Deschutes national forest. The goal of the work is to reduce wildfire risk and restore damaged habitats where development encroaches on natural areas near Bend, Deschutes national forest officials said in a statement. Recreation sites and trails in that area will be closed through April next year. Multiple US Forest Service officials and vehicles were stationed at the Deschutes national forest road closure on Thursday. A sign on the metal gate blocking the road said the temporary emergency closure would last at least one year. Violators could face up six months in jail, fines up to $5,000, or both. On Wednesday night, Mandy Bryant, who said she had lived in the encampment for about three years, was cleaning up her site and trying to get a trailer to start so she could move it. “You could feel the heaviness in the air and just the stress and depression that people are feeling,” she told the Associated Press. “We’re up there on the list of groups of people that society doesn’t really care for.” Four people living in the encampment including Bryant, along with two homeless advocates, filed for a restraining order to stop the closure earlier this month. The claim argued it would cause irreparable harm to more than 100 people who were living there, many of whom have disabilities. “The public’s significant interest in restoring natural habitats and preserving the overall health of Deschutes National Forest is not outweighed by the interest of 150 or so individuals in residing on this particular plot of land,” he wrote in his ruling told the Oregonian/OregonLive that the government’s goal is “voluntary compliance” but Forest Service officers and staff will patrol and “enforce the closure and ensure public safety” designed to provide unprecedented insights into the world’s forests and their crucial role in Earth’s carbon cycle The satellite lifted off aboard a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou on 29 April at 11:15 CEST (06:15 local time) Biomass separated from the rocket’s upper stage the satellite controllers at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre in Germany received the all-important first signal relayed via the Troll ground station in Antarctica that Biomass is working as expected in orbit Controllers will spend the coming days carrying out the ‘launch and early orbit’ phase meticulously verifying that all systems are functioning correctly This critical phase also involves a series of intricate manoeuvres to deploy the satellite’s 12-metre-wide mesh reflector supported by a 7.5-metre boom Biomass will join the portfolio of pioneering missions operated from ESA's mission control centre Carrying the first P-band synthetic aperture radar in space the Biomass mission is designed to deliver crucial information about the state of our forests and how they are changing and to further our knowledge of the role forests play in the carbon cycle ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes “I’d like to extend my congratulations to everyone who has been involved in developing and launching this extraordinary mission Biomass now joins our esteemed family of Earth Explorers – missions that have consistently delivered groundbreaking discoveries and advanced scientific understanding of our planet we are poised to gain vital new data on how much carbon is stored in the world’s forests helping to fill key gaps in our knowledge of the carbon cycle and Forests play a vital role in Earth’s carbon cycle by absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon dioxide helping to regulate the planet’s temperature they absorb around 8 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide annually deforestation and degradation – especially in tropical regions – are releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere A major challenge for scientists and policymakers is the lack of accurate data on how much carbon forests store and how these stocks are changing owing to factors such as rising temperatures increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels Biomass is the first satellite equipped with a P-band synthetic aperture radar which is capable of penetrating forest canopies to measure woody biomass – trunks and stems – where most forest carbon is stored These measurements act as a proxy for carbon storage the assessment of which is the mission’s primary goal Data from Biomass will significantly reduce uncertainties in carbon stock and flux estimates including those related to land-use change The satellite was developed by over 50 companies led by Airbus UK Europe’s Vega-C rocket can launch up to 3300 kg into space including small scientific and Earth observation satellites Vega-C weighs 210 tonnes on the launch pad and reaches orbit with three solid-propellant-powered stages before the fourth liquid-propellant stage takes over for precise placement of satellites into their desired orbit around Earth Vega-C is the evolution of the Vega family of rockets and delivers increased performance greater payload volume and improved competitiveness How to watch the Premier League match between Crystal bonuses go up precipitously if the merger is enabled I remember the days when Oregon Health & Science University was all about research/discovery and teaching/education Now these missions are never even mentioned by OHSU although research was addressed by you indirectly in the article I suspect that if OHSU bigwigs were offered higher salaries and bonuses in exchange for dropping the proposed merger I reiterate that the results of the climate survey were no different than the results of the previous four climate surveys OHSU has been a terrible work environment for decades Joe Robertson may have been a good ol’ boy I am surprised that you view the unions as highly supportive of OHSU administration and the unions despised Joe Robertson and his administration Although I haven’t of wildfire danger and climate disruption is learned informative and timely [“Hotseat: Matt Donegan” the flow of the original interview with the Oregon Journalism Project dances around serious considerations and contradictions that should be addressed citing the National Environmental Policy Act as an impediment to good forest management exploits lack of public awareness of NEPA’s keystone and historical role in environmental protection as well as the Trump administration’s intentions to weaken or eliminate it the facile conflation of “Indigenous and Western science” by Susan Jane Brown as regards forest management fails to acknowledge the ecological asymmetry of First Nation and Settler communities historically and is one that is increasingly exploited while failing to warrant a deeper understanding and examination Donegan raises the challenge of biomass waste disposal then except for referencing the fears that environmentalists hold regarding large capital investments in mills he avoids coming clean on whether he supports innovative waste wood resource markets the handsomely financed wood pellet export and electric generation industry which has a notoriously In a case that drew attention from cattlemen's groups and western landowners Charles and Heather Maude were facing federal theft charges over a fence line dispute with the Forest Service that involved a center pivot on their ground that crossed over into Forest Service land Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Wednesday led a press conference outside USDA headquarters on the National Mall with the Maude family Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem -- the former South Dakota governor -- and other officials from South Dakota and Wyoming They announced charges against the family had been dropped by the Trump administration "This family was targeted solely over what should have been a minor civil dispute over grazing rights on 25 acres of public land was prosecuted credibly threatened with jail sentences so extreme that they were told to find alternatives to raise their young children," Rollins said Rollins reached back 250 years to the battles of Lexington and Concord to point out the country was founded by average people fighting against a tyrannical government filled with people who believed they could do as they wish against everyday Americans Rollins called the prosecution of the Maude family they have endured a torturous legal process and suffered as victims of the Biden regime's reckless warfare Just imagine a government that would be willing to de facto orphan American children over a mere dispute of 25 acres of land," Rollins said "The men of Lexington and Concord knew what that sort of government was like .. faced with destruction at the hand of the state made their appeal to heaven and Providence answered Thanks to the leadership and the unequivocal and bold leadership of President Trump and his directive to put Americans first we have the pleasure to announce that the criminal prosecution of the Maudes is now over and their children will grow up with the mother and the father they love and who love them." To respond to what she said was "egregious lawfare from the Biden administration," Rollins announced USDA is launching a portal on the https://www.usda.gov/… website for producers to share details about government overreach "We are ending regulation by prosecution in America and investigating how and why this wrongful prosecution of an American ranching family ever occurred in the first place," Rollins said While pointing to an egregious use of federal courts against a South Dakota ranch family Wednesday's event helping mark the first 100 days of the Trump administration was also a way to deflect from bad news about the economy trade disruption and Trump's overall sagging polling numbers in the first three months of this administration Rollins was on Fox News touting that the administration was in the early days of trade talks and potential bailout of American farmers might not be necessary even though a contingency plan is being put in place The Maudes operate a ranch and farm that is now in its fifth generation in Pennington County raises 250 head of cattle and has about 40 sows Their property is adjacent to the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands "Our families have a combined 250 plus years in production agriculture," she said saying there was a pause when members of the family fought for the country in World War II Maude became emotional thanking R-CALF USA and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) that it's been in Charles family since 1910," Heather Maude said "Our neighbors who stood up for us at the threat of retribution to their operations that they still face until we get this completely resolved," Heather Maude said "And we are so thankful for the efforts that are being rolled out today to help make progress in the right direction." specifically said the prosecution of the Maudes would have never occurred if former Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack had just gotten engaged in the dispute Noem said she first wrote a letter to Vilsack then spoke to the former secretary about it "He completely ignored our pleas for justice," Noem said I know I'm a farmer and rancher of many generations and land is everything to farmers and ranchers Vilsack told DTN Political Correspondent Jerry Hagstrom in an email "Respect for property rights is a two-way street when public lands are involved Efforts to protect our public lands proved unsuccessful leading to the enforcement action that was taken We made every effort to respond to inquiries from the South Dakota delegation so the reasoning behind the action taken was fully explained." who also ranches about 70 miles from the Maude family said the case was not about picking a battle with the Biden administration or getting headlines "It was about delivering real results for Charles and Heather Maude," Rhoden said Secretary Vilsack and President Biden ignored our pleas President Trump was elected by the American people." Rhoden said he believed there was a breakdown in communication over the years between the Forest Service and the landowners That then eventually culminated with the criminal charges I was pretty appalled by the severity of the charges and the way they were brought about regardless of the circumstances," Rhoden said said federal officials who have pushed to prosecute farm families for these kinds of situations need to be held to account He added he looks forward to "running out every single bad actor in these federal agencies." Rounds also said he will be introducing legislation to mandate federal mediation in disputes between landowners and the Forest Service "The Maudes were on this land even before the Forest Service existed," Rollins noted Hageman also criticized the federal armed "agent" who showed up at the Maude's ranch to press the issue and federal indictment "The agent had complete disregard for the decades-long relationship between the Maude's family and the agency and used his role in an unconstitutional effort to make felons out of farmers," Hageman said "Gone are the days of the government working against the people under the leadership of President Donald J Trump and those individuals he surrounded himself with." could reshape wildfire insurance nationwide the Tahoe Donner Association has secured a first-of-its-kind policy that links premium pricing directly to decades of active forest management The innovative agreement—developed in collaboration with former California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones a business of WTW—marks the first time an insurance company has factored large-scale fuel reduction work into wildfire risk assessments and policy pricing the $2.5 million wildfire resilience insurance coverage has been developed for Tahoe Donner The policy covers over 1,300 acres of high-risk open space within Tahoe Donner one of the largest landowners in the region behind the U.S proximity to ignition sources like Interstate 80 and the potential for human-caused fires—have seen direct threats from wildfire “Because of the work we’ve done in forest management it’s more likely that we’re gonna have a lesser impact because we reduce that risk,” Jason Hajduk-Dorworth Director of Administrative Services for the Association helped launch the project by connecting the Association with The Nature Conservancy and UC Berkeley School of Law Tahoe Donner’s long standing record of fire mitigation along with its trove of historical data on forest stewardship made it a uniquely strong candidate for this pilot “They had been looking to do this kind of work for a long time…but they didn’t have the correct partner,” Hajduk-Dorworth said “Tahoe Donner was the correct partner at the right time.” underscored that the Association’s fire readiness work has evolved over decades “We’ve been doing fuel reduction work for forest health and resiliency and now really transitioning into that defensible home wildland fire impact mitigation work,” she said have that historical body of information that we can share,” Hadjuk-Dorworth added.  The Nature Conservancy is covering the cost of the insurance premium through a grant making Tahoe Donner’s participation financially viable while also establishing metrics that could help scale the program to homeowners “This isn’t a cure-all—it’s just one more new tool in the tool bag,” Rosenfeld said “We believe that we’ve positioned our organization to have the best outcome it can if the fire comes through.” While the pilot policy applies only to Association-managed land officials hope its success could eventually influence homeowner policies and broader insurance practices “We have quantifiable actions that are being acknowledged in a quantifiable premium reduction,” Hajduk-Dorworth said.  As wildfire risk intensifies and insurers retreat from high-risk zones the Tahoe Donner policy is being viewed as a potential model “Hopefully other insurance companies can look at homeowners insurance in the same way,” Rosenfeld said “We’re a town within the town essentially We have a vested interest not just in our community but the whole entire community of Truckee-Tahoe.” A member education campaign is set to roll out this summer to explain how forest-wide insurance efforts could eventually benefit individual property owners In a state where many homeowners have lost access to fire insurance altogether Tahoe Donner’s policy may signal a way forward.  “Fire is something that we have to live with for the future,” Rosenfeld said and how are we adjusting what we’re doing on the land to live with fire?” and beyond make Biomass will use its revolutionary P-band synthetic aperture radar instrument to measure forest biomass to assess terrestrial carbon stocks and fluxes to enable scientists to better understand the carbon cycle and its effects on climate change Launched on a Vega-C rocket from Europe’s Space Port the satellite will scan the Earth’s forests from an altitude of 666km during its five-year mission “Biomass will give scientists and climatologists unprecedented data on the state of the world’s forests further enhancing the understanding of the climate cycle The spacecraft is now safely in orbit and ready to deliver its precious data,” said Alain Fauré Head of Space Systems at Airbus Defence and Space Biomass carries the first space-borne P-band radar to deliver exceptionally accurate maps of tropical temperate and boreal forest biomass to help improve the understanding of the part that forests play in regulating climate Biomass will also be able to measure paleo aquifers in desert regions to find new water sources in arid regions as well as contribute to observations of ice sheet dynamics Biomass’ P-band radar will see through the forest canopy to the ground improving current Digital Elevation Models in densely forested areas and provide a completely new view of the Earth’s surface The spacecraft features a large 12 metre deployable antenna to capture the reflected SAR data to show changes in biomass due to forest loss (for example from logging/burning) and regrowth built and tested the satellite in Stevenage (UK) Friedrichshafen (Germany) and Toulouse (France) before it was shipped to French Guiana in February 2025 The teams are preparing for the in-orbit commissioning and operational phases with a separate team managing the delivery of the ground calibration transponder Development and testing of the Biomass spacecraft involved more than 50 companies across 20 countries a UN climate change initiative aimed at reducing emissions due to deforestation by systematically monitoring forests in vulnerable areas with no need for ground intervention
