The Repsol Honda HRC rider takes two wins on the opening day in the Portuguese coastal town. Gabriel Marcelli finishes sixth. Viana do Castelo welcomed the TrialGP World Championship’s TR1 class for the first time ever this Saturday. The Repsol Honda HRC riders arrived eager to open their win account in the Portuguese town in style, and performed well. Toni Bou took victory in both races, while teammate Gabriel Marcelli claimed fourth and seventh place. In Race 1, the sections were slippery due to the constant rain the day before, yet the current championship leader was able to achieve success. Bou started off by stringing together a pair of zeros in the first sections, and despite accumulating two consecutive fives, he didn’t relinquish his lead, which he held until the end of the race. The Repsol Honda rider took his first victory of the day with 23 penalty points, to second-place finisher Jaime Busto’s 28. For Race 2, all the TR1 class riders took a step forward, accruing fewer points. Despite this, Bou managed to hold on and, making few mistakes, took another victory in Viana do Castelo. Overall, the Montesa Cota 4RT rider was crowned Saturday’s winner, taking the top step of the podium. He has a total of four wins so far in 2025. Gabriel Marcelli, riding in the race closest to home for him, had a series of struggles. In the first race, the Galician was fighting for victory alongside his teammate and Busto. A series of errors in the final sections ultimately resulted in him tying with Matteo Grattarola on points for third place, the Repsol Honda rider finishing fourth on time. Despite starting Race 2 with maximum motivation and confidence, luck wasn’t on Marcelli’s side. A big crash in Zone 10 caused mechanical problems that relegated him to seventh place, from fighting for the podium. With both results, the Repsol Honda rider finished sixth, earning 22 points overall. Toni Bou earned a total of 40 points between the two races, plus three extra points for being the fastest in the ‘Power Section.’ Marcelli took 22 points overall. Bou leads the World Championship and Marcelli in third position. Sunday’s action begins at 8:00 a.m. local time Toni Bou currently leads the standings after taking three wins at the first round of the year. Teammate Gabriel Marcelli is third with 62 points. The TrialGP World Championship moves on to its second round of the 2025 season this weekend in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, which will host the international series for the first time. Toni Bou is currently in the top spot in the standings after his strong debut at the first round of the year, and Gabriel Marcelli rounds out the top three in the overall classification. Bou heads into the second round of the TrialGP World Championship season after an impressive start to the campaign in Benahavís, Málaga. The Montesa Cota 4RT rider took three first places and one second place in the four races held less than a week ago. With 77 points, he leads the standings, and his goal will be to maintain his consistent performance and results this weekend. Marcelli will be eager to put on a good show. He will be racing just a few kilometres from his home, and is currently third overall with 62 points, just five behind second-placed Jaime Busto. Last weekend, the 25-year-old demonstrated his excellent form, securing three podium finishes from the four races. For the second round of the season, the Repsol Honda rider will be looking for his first victory in the class. The race in Viana do Castelo will consist of two days of competition. On Friday, riders in all classes will undergo administrative and technical checks, as well as site visits and practice. “We're approaching the second race of the season with enthusiasm after a strong start. We know it will be a very close year due to the new regulations; we saw that in the first race, so we'll have to be very consistent, which will be our strategy throughout the weekend. Mistakes are costly, so the key will be to maintain consistency across all four races. Portugal always has very good terrain, and we expect a fun race for the spectators.” “We're very satisfied with the team's start to the season. Toni has once again demonstrated his high level and his ability to quickly adapt to any terrain. Gabri has also done a very good job, establishing himself among the best riders and very close to second place. We're arriving in Portugal highly motivated and aiming to continue scoring important points. Viana do Castelo is a new venue, which always adds an extra challenge, but the team are ready to take it on.” The staircase is detached from the walls and slab and is joined by a loose concrete volume that rises from the floor and forms the first three steps of the staircase You'll now receive updates based on what you follow Personalize your stream and start following your favorite authors If you have done all of this and still can't find the email The modernisation of the surface fleet of the Portuguese Navy reached a significant milestone on 31 March with the start of the construction of the first of six additional Viana do Castelo-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) at West Sea – Estaleiros Navais' shipyard in Viana do Castelo This new batch of multimission OPVs was ordered on 29 December 2023 under a contract awarded by the Ministry of National Defence to meet the requirements of the NPO3S (Navios de Patrulha Oceanicos da 3ª série) project part of the navy's fleet renewal programme The commissioning of the six OPVs is scheduled to take place between 2027 and 2031 The fleet was designed to carry out a large payload of missions Gain unlimited access to Janes news and more.. now they were making content “I’m doing what I’m always doing—my very famous and favorite doctor in the whole world who I love so so much,” Betty responded “And you’re going to have what?” asked José after a mutual friend brought the recently widowed Betty to an opening at José’s art gallery in Cascais and it created in my subconscious the desire to protect her more It turned me on,” José said in his native Portuguese to an authorized biographer in 2010 José and Betty at their wedding in 1996.Abel Dias.José José found out otherwise a few days before their wedding More recently if you were to see José hosting at the NYC nightclub The Box you might assume she was a beautiful trans woman who is deeply Catholic and attends Mass every Sunday prefers not to use such labels: “I’m very well resolved José describes the decision to embrace both masculinity and femininity as a reaction to a life of hardship as well as sexual assaults starting at age 11 José!’ I was a trailblazer in this country I paved the way for people to feel free to be themselves.” became a cabinet minister in the nation’s newly independent government went on to become Portugal’s prime minister resigning last year.) A young José looked up to his iconoclastic brother who rebelled against their colonial family But even the socialist revolutionary Sérgio never accepted his sibling’s style of rule breaking José and Betty’s mainstream notoriety began in 2003 when the couple was apprehended at the Lisbon airport with 2 million euros’ worth of undeclared gems They claimed the 100-some diamond necklaces Soon José and Betty were minor celebrities with footage of José leaving jail broadcast prime time (José was eventually acquitted and the state returned the jewels.) was José’s first show—she won and became easily the most famous cast member José appeared in flashy swimsuits and took diving lessons The premise: José is sent to live in the Namibian bush Much of the storyline revolves around the “tribe” members’ confusion about whether José should integrate with its men or women and of someone cannily harnessing the spectacle of their own ostracization who calls José “my husband,” for her thoughts on gender “I never thought of those things,” she said was one of José’s many talents: “He can paint There was a fashion designer with whom José canceled a collaboration less than a week before a planned runway show The designs “would have given Betty a heart attack.” There was a security guard at an Upper East Side physical rehab facility where Betty was being treated who offended the couple by asking them to use a back entrance “One of the things I like about him is that he’s a little bit punk,” said José’s friend “He refuses to entirely be a product.” Motta recalled once helping José organize a messy part of the house Motta discovered his friend had secretly hidden thousands of pairs of false eyelashes “If the world goes into a big war and I have to fight for myself and Betty I will look my best,” José explained matter-of-factly doing sponsored posts for filler injectors at age 95 Betty was the member of the couple I observed to be more obviously performing going quiet again once they had stopped rolling She became most animated talking about her past especially lesser-known anecdotes of hardship Betty remembers going to school on England’s southern coast as bombs dropped Betty fell in love with an American GI and moved to New York to marry him “He broke my jaw when I found out he had a girlfriend,” Betty told me I was skeptical until I found his RICO conviction from 1991 and Betty went to work at a dentist’s office and at PepsiCo before marrying diamond dealer Albert Grafstein in 1959 A 1969 WWD article described Betty as a “real hidden gem” of a designer beloved by private clients who shopped for diamond-and-coral mushroom pins and emerald rings in her “sparkling east side apartment.” (Betty said Joan Crawford was among her clientele.) But what of the glittering apartment on East 62nd Street A 2019 New York Supreme Court opinion revealed that the apartment that hosted parties attended by Tina Radziwill and Studio 54 promoter Carmen D’Alessio was in fact a rental—and it was rent-stabilized (The diamond heiress paid less rent than I did!) who works in the diamond business in Belgium “Albert was a normal diamond wholesaler on 47th Street,” Cohen told me of his grandfather’s upper-middle-class background “And he was not particularly successful given that he lived in Portugal half the year.” When Albert died Cohen inherited an amount that was more like a gift and less than what it would have taken to buy a condo “Have you spoken to Roger?” Cohen asked me When I was spending time at José and Betty’s apartment this spring When I tried to reach him on his mom’s urging Then the news about the domestic violence allegations broke “I’ve been silent because this has been happening for years,” Basile told me “I didn’t want to say things people didn’t already know.” Basile said he first learned of domestic abuse in the late 1990s He got a call from friends of Betty’s and flew to Portugal where José knocked her down and kept kicking her on the ground.” Basile said Betty told him José abused her he tried to extract his mom from what he describes as a violent relationship José denied ever abusing Betty and said this incident in the late 1990s never happened When I asked José why Basile would say otherwise José told me that Basile has always disliked José and has been working for 28 years to break up the marriage for his own financial gain Portugal.Abel Dias.Basile is 75 and perhaps the only person in the couple’s orbit with no social media account Basile managed the family diamond business But he flatly denied that the business was a source of great wealth for his mom “My mom is penniless!” Betty lives off Social Security Although once a woman who “lived nicely,” he said today her only possessions of value are clothes dame commander of the Order of the British Empire “My grandparents were simple people,” Basile said of his mother’s family “I visited them once at their small house in the country.” Betty’s adoptive father who the couple said owned the men’s magazine The Yachtsman Census records confirmed that and also indicated that Betty’s grandfather—the one whose wife was supposedly lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary—was a publican came not from the Queen of England but from an Irish PR adviser and diplomatic consultant named Anthony Bailey A frequent guest at José and Betty’s parties over the years Bailey helped revive the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George and the Royal Order of Francis I such as “Dame,” to individuals including Margaret Thatcher and At some point the letters changed ever so slightly it was Bailey who had explicitly told the couple that Betty’s dameship was approved by the Queen of England Grafstein’s now lapsed entry into an Italian charitable order in 2001 allowed José to claim 23 years later she was a British dame or lady are clearly the rantings of a deranged fantasist,” Bailey told me Basile argued Betty was entirely innocent in any misrepresentation “My mother never made herself out to be more than she was,” in terms of wealth or titles “José pushed these stories and they became celebrities in Portugal And she went along with it because she liked the attention.” José had a history of playing up aristocratic grandeur going by the nickname “The Count” on reality TV The couple attends New York City designer Luar’s fashion week after party in 2023.Matteo Prandoni / BFA.com.But I wondered if Basile’s interpretation—that Betty had no hand in creating the myth of her own titles—may not give Betty enough credit Many a modern-day princess had christened herself In 2024 the aristocracy is largely made-up anyway—whether by a guy 400 years ago who said God made him king And plenty of followers had happily bought into the fantasy—myself included During my time in José’s and Betty’s lives I had been enchanted by the romance: their elegant disarray their odd combination of old-world manners and American quest for celebrity Perhaps the reality was just as fascinating as the myth it meant José likely hadn’t married her for her millions—or at the very least didn’t stay by her side for nearly 30 years for them When I spoke to José about Betty’s biography she seemed stunned at what I had uncovered and denied pressuring Betty to make up stories For months after ending up in the Portuguese hospital A lawyer visited her at her hospital in Portugal leaked photos showed Betty and caregivers traveling by plane from Portugal directly to another hospital in New York and her lawyers are currently fighting a travel ban I wondered about not just the current status of her and José’s relationship Cynics may say José and Betty were never in love just using each other for beauty or status Perhaps their lifelong performance of fame was a golden cage But it also seemed possible that the artifice was the passion All romance starts with a dose of delusion: We fall in love with the idea of someone until our fantasy of the other person either buckles under the strain of reality or carries on forever eclipsing whatever reality may have once existed two months after ending up in the hospital Betty got in touch through Basile and let me know she wanted to speak with me She and her son called me on FaceTime from a beige-walled rehab room on the Upper East Side Betty was wearing blue scrubs and simple beaded bracelets tell them I’m not here!” she said at one point when the phone rang At times her memory and energy level flagged But she was most clear and confident about what she described as her longtime bullying at the hands of José “He was always throwing a punch when I least expected it,” she told me “he punched me in the head like I was a football.” The abuse started “from the beginning,” Betty said When I asked Betty about inconsistencies in her biography she first stated that she hadn’t had time to review the details Only when prompted by her son did Betty admit that José had “made up stories” about her and about her adoptive grandmother who was supposedly a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary “José just likes to glorify everything and show off,” Betty said Betty seemed irritated by a question about the existence of her diamond fortune and avoided answering it directly “Let Roger say what he wants,” she responded with a side-eye when I told her her son said she had no assets But there was one aspect of Betty’s biography that she refused to walk back entirely When Basile prompted her to “tell the truth that you’re not a member of the British aristocracy,” Betty instead changed the subject and started talking about her home in Sintra I asked about a story she had told me months earlier she first learned she was a descendant of British royals as a teenager when her adoptive mother confessed the family secret I asked Betty to confirm this story once again In the end Betty couldn’t be sure whether her memories of her childhood were real or whether José had made them up José was adamant that she never physically abused Betty But José admitted to behavior that others may consider domineering: pressuring Betty to stand up from her wheelchair “Betty loves to look beautiful,” José said But spending time with the couple in New York I witnessed instances where José’s idea of beauty seemed more than Betty could bear Several times José tried to put a pair of Chanel flats on Betty’s swollen feet Betty grimaced and protested with a look of pain on her face People used to throw stones at me on the street because of the way I looked!” José wondered aloud if anything today could be considered abuse if definitions had changed so much to be unrecognizable According to the couple’s friend and hairstylist Alice Pires when José started passing up work opportunities to devote himself to the full-time job of Betty’s care “He wants her to be her old self: to walk normal but Betty’s not willing to do that anymore who am I to judge.” Perhaps José’s spunk was keeping Betty alive they sit at nursing homes waiting to die.” The fateful trip to Portugal that ended in the couple’s separation seemed at first like the perfect example of an adventure that was keeping Betty young “It’s so important to José,” Betty told me when we were alone The occasion was the baptism of José’s granddaughter Constança from a previous marriage before Betty.) There would be extravagant flowers In early March José called me and said they had bought tickets We scrambled to put together a photo shoot on the day before their flight Mystery boxes were stacked in an unusable shower One room looked like a Saks sample sale ravaged by raccoons I overheard the couple in tears in their bedroom I tried to calm things down then stayed for three more hours to help pack and gossiped about nonagenarian celebrities less youthful than Betty I watched the couple’s first few weeks in Portugal on social media José had a packed schedule of influencer gigs performing two shows at a drag cabaret called Glitters and making Cameo and Instagram appearances Betty tagged along and also attended events of her own Videos filmed by bystanders from the weeks surrounding the alleged domestic violence incident show José frustrated and fighting in public just days after Betty went to the hospital José waved to fans while celebrating in the streets of Lisbon for the 50-year anniversary of the Portuguese revolution Later that night José was filmed grabbing a man’s neck in a café José said the video was taken after the patron insulted Betty with the footage going online after Betty’s complaint The video shows José and a lawyer arriving outside the disputed villa in Sintra José slaps Pico in the face; Pico punches back José’s assistant Kiko recalled to me that a few minutes after the fistfight José wiped away a nosebleed and logged onto Cameo Photograph by Max Lakner.I asked José about the string of events in which she appeared to lose her temper and get physical Was it possible that José had also lost her temper with Betty “I not lose my temper with someone in their 90s,” José told me the events of that day unfolded as follows: Betty had been feeling weak and José gave her a B12 injection and brought her to a chair on the terrace of their hotel much less cross the single step that separated the terrace I’m going to fall,” José recalled her saying per José—as José struggled to get her to bed If Betty was now interpreting the incident as abuse it was because her mental faculties were failing Betty had a hallucination: “She was looking out of our window at the hotel and said she saw men in uniform cutting trees,” José said ‘Are you going senile?’” José argued that an already confused Betty fell under the influence of Basile at the hospital who manipulated her into making a domestic violence complaint When I asked Betty about the events on and after April 20 I asked Betty what words she would use to describe José’s behavior toward her When I first asked how she had ended up in the hospital “He pushed me out the window,” confirming that she meant José Betty then remembered something different: She had been outside her hotel’s entrance when José “pushed me down three flights of stairs.” I had visited the hotel in question when in Portugal It didn’t have three flights of stairs at any of its entrances I asked if perhaps Betty meant three individual stairs I asked Betty if it was possible she was confused about the specifics acknowledged his mother’s memory wasn’t particularly clear That’s why I had a hard time believing it was three floors up When I asked Betty about her and José’s love José “just needed that to build everything up,” Betty told me “I’m not going to commit suicide because I’m Catholic,” José told me when I relayed what Betty had said “The person I love for 30 years is no more the same person Like most everything about their final days together the location of the jewelry the couple once posed in for magazines is a confusing tableau of she said José admits to putting certain pieces in a bank safe days after Betty went to the hospital claiming that Basile was still holding her clothes and other possessions hostage Basile admitted to keeping the couple’s wardrobe but denied having any of their jewels The ending to this love story was not the one the couple had planned “I wish we can die at the same time,” José told me the last day we saw each other in Lisbon Everyone is dressed in black cocktail dresses And I want Betty to be beautiful,” José said “People can take everything from you but your dignity.” How Miriam Adelson Went From Big MAGA Winner to Casino Loser in Trump’s First 100 Days Trump’s Lies Are Finally Catching Up to Him The UK Has Found Another Reason to Be Mad at Meghan Markle “It’s About Him”: How Trump Is Perverting the Presidential Photo Stream The Ballad of Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson The Truth Underlying Pete Hegseth’s Job Security Why Are Americans So Obsessed With Protein How Sebastian Stan Became Hollywood’s Most Daring Shape-Shifter Every Quentin Tarantino Movie Meet Elon Musk’s 14 Children and Their Mothers (Whom We Know of) From the Archive: Sinatra and the Mob This section of the website is exclusively reserved for members of the FIM Family: CONUs members and honorary members of the commissions You are a member of the FIM Family and do not have your access? The genderfluid husband of a diamond 'heiress' has been accused of 'torturing her with boiling oil and putting hairspray in her eyes'.  Betty Grafstein, a 96-year-old British socialite met her third husband Jose Castelo Branco, 61, in the 1990s after the death of her second husband.  The couple became famous for their extravagant lifestyles, matching cosmetic procedures and designers clothes.  Although this year Branco has been accused of abusing Grafstein after she ended up in a Portuguese hospital with a fractured femur and injured wrist. Now Portuguese prosecutors have now charged Branco with repeatedly assaulting his wife in Lisbon and the US. With the indictment also alleging that Branco tortured Grafstein with boiling oil and put hairspray in her eyes while telling her 'don't cry, it ruins your makeup'. Branco, who has vehemently denied all allegations of abuse, has insisted that he's devoted to her care. The public prosecutor's office said in a statement: 'The indictment states that, since the start of the marriage, the suspect abused the victim physically and verbally.' The indictment claimed the assaults included 'punching her all over her body and pushing her', and squeezing her neck 'until she had difficulty breathing'. Branco allegedly described his wife as 'old' and 'ugly' on a daily basis. 'By carrying out the conduct described, the defendant directly and necessarily caused the victim Betty Grafstein to feel anxious and afraid, fearing the actions that the defendant might take towards her, namely that he would offend her physical integrity, humiliate her, intimidate her or even kill her,' it continued. Grafstein's son from another marriage, Roger Basile, 75, has also previously weighed in, echoing claims that the abuse has been ongoing for decades. 'I've been silent because this has been happening for years,' Basile told Vanity Fair. 'I didn't want to say things people didn't already know.' He recounted a horrifying alleged incident from the late 1990s when he said he found his mother 'black-and-blue' after Castelo Branco allegedly knocked her down and repeatedly kicked her. 'When I got there, she was black-and-blue, from her buttocks to her neck, where José knocked her down and kept kicking her on the ground ... She always took José back.' Alexandre Guerreiro, Grafstein's lawyer, told Portuguese media: 'It was encouraging to see that the public prosecutor's office had the sensitivity to understand the gravity [of the case] and the alleged aggressor's conduct towards Mrs Grafstein.'  She was born in London but moved to the US in the 1940s, where she married her second husband Albert Grafstein, a jeweller in 1959.  The couple bought a house in Portugal in the 1970s, where she moved after her husband's death in 1991.  She reportedly met Branco at a dinner in New York, where Branco claims he was unaware of their 30 year age gap.  He identifies as having both male and female characteristics, though looks and is often thought to be a woman because of his extremely feminine style and makeup.  They broke through into stardom after being arrested at Lisbon airport in 2003 with £1.6million worth of undeclared diamonds necklaces, bracelets, rings and watches.  However, it is believed that their glamorous lifestyle is far from reality after Basile claimed that his mother is 'penniless' and lives off Social Security. Their Upper East Side apartment, far from being a multimillion-dollar property, is also reportedly a rent-stabilized unit. Meanwhile, the 'Grafstein Diamond Corporation' appears to have been little more than a modest family business, not the source of great wealth it was portrayed to be. Even Grafstein's titles - she was often referred to as 'Lady Betty Grafstein DBE' - have been called into question. It's now alleged that her 'dameship' came not from Queen Elizabeth, but from a Catholic chivalric order with no official royal recognition. Despite the allegations and revelations, Castelo Branco maintains that his love for Grafstein is genuine. 'For me she is everything. My sister, my mother, my wife. Volume 1 - 2023 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fdpys.2023.1317426 Psychological theory and research demonstrate the positive effects of personal choice on human motivation there is evidence in adults that an overabundance of options can lead to choice overload Little is known about the early development of behaviors involving choice we investigated whether toddlers (M age = 2.5 years) preferred choice over non-choice and tested for the presence of choice overload using a novel sticker-book task we explored associations between children's executive function (EF) skills and choice preference behavior children preferred choice on 70% of trials and this preference increased as a function of the number of options from 2-26 Study 2 (N = 52) replicated findings from Study 1 with up to 53 options Age (inversely) and sex (female) predicted choice preference in Study 2 Some aspects of parent-reported EF were inversely related to children's preference for choice whereas a direct assessment of EF was positively correlated Future research should test for choice overload using alternative measures with a wider age range and clarify associations between EF and choice preference developmental research has focused on outcomes related to choice including motivation little is known about the act of making choices itself no studies to our knowledge have examined whether an overabundance of options leads to choice overload in toddlers Early childhood might be an especially meaningful period to investigate as children start to develop a sense of agency over their actions through choice-making increasingly demanding independence from their caregivers although emerging theory suggests that choice is related to children's EF skills we do not yet have empirical evidence to test these ideas We conducted two studies to address these gaps in the literature we investigated toddlers' preference for choice and tested for choice overload using a novel behavioral task We predicted children would prefer choice over non-choice and that this behavior would follow an inverted U-shaped pattern where preference for choice increases with the number of options up to a point indicating the presence of choice overload we predicted children with stronger EF skills would more strongly prefer choice over non-choice we sought to replicate and extend these findings using a modified task where we increased the upper limit of options Families were recruited from a metropolitan area in the midwestern United States. Overall, 106 typically developing children (49% female) ages 21–41 months and their parents participated at home due to COVID-19 (Table 1) Children were primarily non-Hispanic White (88% White Families reported a median annual income of $125,000–$149,999 with 41% completing at least a bachelor's degree and 55% completing a graduate or professional degree Study 1 descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations Families received an email invitation to participate in a remote study Participants were mailed study materials to their home address following consent Parents were instructed to play a sticker book game with their child and were provided with detailed instructions A subset of families (15%) completed the procedure live over Zoom with a researcher to verify they could follow instructions These sessions were recorded and later reviewed by the lead author Parents completed a 10-min survey via REDCap the Left/Right orientation was reversed along with the question order the sticker on the singleton side appeared among the stickers on the multi-option side This was designed to compare behavior when there was No Cost (the same sticker could be obtained either way) to when there was a Cost (an option is removed) All stickers were identical in size and shape and were comparable in design and attractiveness Each specific sticker was placed in each position across the full sample to guard against “favorite” stickers biasing the results parents were asked to photograph of each page and upload them for us to code children's selection on each trial (singleton or multi-option) The FIQ was used to collect demographic information from parents The BRIEF-P is a 63-item parent-report measure of EF in children ages 2–5 years parents were asked to report how often a behavior has been a problem for their child in the past 6 months (Never = 1 Items were categorized across five subscales including Inhibition We used overall and subscale scores in our analyses Overall, children showed preference for the multi-option side, selecting from that side on 70% of trials, p < 0.001, Cohen's g = 0.20 (medium effect) (Table 1) with 9% of children selecting the singleton on every trial 23% selecting from the multi-option side on every trial These overall choice preference patterns were unrelated to age and gender and were similar regardless of Left/Right orientation and Cost/No Cost conditions To test the choice overload hypothesis, following Shah and Wolford (2007) The dependent variable was the child's selection (singleton vs Our primary independent variable was the number of options we first conducted individual binary logistic regression analyses with study variables and decided to include them as covariates in the full model only if they showed significance only Left/Right orientation predicted choice: The odds of selecting from the multi-option side were greater when it was presented on the right-hand page of the book (OR = 0.64 [0.48 The results showed a significant association between the number of options provided and choice preference (OR = 1.04 [1.02, 1.06], p < 0.001) when covarying orientation. For each 3-item increase in the number of options, the odds of children choosing from that side increased by 1.04 (Figure 1) we did not find evidence for choice overload as the quadratic term was non-significant (OR = 1.00 [1.00 Choice preference by number of options in study 1 To test our secondary aim, we explored the associations between children's EF skills (parent-reported) and choice behavior. As shown in Table 1 none of the BRIEF-P subscales nor the total scores were associated with overall preference for choice we conducted a series of binary logistic regressions multi-side) onto BRIEF-P subscale and total scores Children with weaker inhibitory control (OR = 1.90 [1.07 p = 0.028) and working memory (OR = 1.96 [1.18 p = 0.009) according to parents were more inclined to choose from the multi-option side we modified the Choice Preference and Overload Task to address several follow-up research questions we adjusted task procedures to accommodate in-person testing we doubled the number of trials from 9 to 18 and increased the maximum number of options from 26 to 53 to test whether more options were needed to induce choice overload in toddlers we introduced a Descending condition in which the number of options on the multi-side decreased across trials This was designed to compare choice behavior when the number of options increased vs We predicted choice overload would be more likely to occur in the Ascending condition once children had acquired several stickers already whereas preference for choice would remain steadily high across trials in the Descending condition as children would be drawn to the novelty and salience of the multi-side at the beginning and then continue to prefer it as resources appeared to be dwindling Families were recruited from the same metropolitan area as Study 1. Overall, 52 typically developing children ages 23–38 months (48% female) participated (Table 2) Most children were non-Hispanic White (62% White Parents reported a median annual income of $125,000–$149,999 with 56% having completed at least their bachelor's degree 44% of data regarding family income and parent education were missing due to the school-based location of the study Study 2 descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations Children completed video-recorded sessions individually in a testing room Parents were invited to complete a 10-min survey via Qualtrics The verbal routing subtest of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales was included as a potential control variable (Roid and Pomplun, 2012) children were asked to apply knowledge of concepts and language to identify and define increasingly difficult words like dog and apple To accommodate the larger number of stickers we used poster boards instead of sticker books children were presented with one sticker on the left side of the board and an assortment of stickers on the right side “Do you want to choose this one or do you want to choose one of these?” The selected sticker was removed and placed on a blank sheet of paper the options on the right side of the board increased by 3 the Left/Right orientation of singleton vs the number of options on the multi-side increased in an ascending order across trials (2 to 53) this was reversed in a descending order (53 to 2) Given there was no effect of Cost/No Cost in Study 1 the stickers were designed to be comparable in size and attractiveness to reduce potential bias Each specific sticker's location was randomized across participants We coded this task based on the child's selection on each trial (singleton or multi-option) In Spin the Pots (Hughes and Ensor, 2005) children were asked to search for stickers in nine distinct boxes arranged on a Lazy Susan tray Seven of the boxes were baited with a sticker whereas two remained empty children were invited to search one of the boxes for stickers The boxes were covered with a scarf and spun around after each trial The task ended when all seven stickers were found or when a maximum of 14 attempts had been made Proportion scores were the number of stickers found divided by the total number of attempts The MEFS is a digital game-like measure administered on an iPad, requiring the use of working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility (Carlson and Zelazo, 2014) Children were asked to sort cards according to a specific dimension (e.g. size and color) and then were asked to switch the sorting rule (e.g. Starting level was based on age and the game automatically moved up or down depending on performance which accounts for accuracy and response time and standard scores adjusted for age and sex To examine the probability of selecting the multi-option side across trials we again conducted binary logistic regression analyses A similar approach to Study 1 was used to determine which covariates to include Age and gender were significant predictors (age: OR = 0.91 [0.88 p < 0.001; gender: OR = 1.53 [1.15 and thus were included as covariates in the full model younger children were more inclined to choose from the multi-option side compared to older children and females tended to prefer the multi-option side compared to males Given that sequence (Ascending/Descending) and Left/Right orientation were non-significant all groups were combined in the following analyses The results did not show a significant association between the number of options and choice (OR = 1.00 [0.99, 1.01], p = 0.73) when covarying child age and gender (Figure 2) Child age and gender remained significant predictors (age: OR = 0.91 [0.87 p < 0.001; gender: OR = 1.60 [1.20 we did not find evidence for choice overload as the quadratic term was non-significant (OR = 1.00 [0.99 Choice preference by number of options in study 2 We again examined associations between children's EF skills and choice behavior. Neither EF measure was correlated with overall preference for choice (Table 2) When we regressed choice on children's cognitive flexibility (measured by MEFS) covarying child age and gender children with higher cognitive flexibility were more likely to choose from the multi-option side (OR = 1.03 [1.01 The association between working memory (measured by Spin the Pots) and choice behavior was non-significant (OR = 0.93 [0.40 It is possible there are also developmental changes wherein children tend to become less maximizing and more satisficing with age Regarding our exploratory question concerning EF results were mainly non-significant or inconsistent we found individual differences in two of the BRIEF-P subscales negatively predicted preference for choice children with weaker working memory and inhibitory control according to their parents tended to choose from the multi-option array it may require children to engage self-control to resist choosing from a larger array of attractive stickers in which children with stronger EF according to a direct assessment (MEFS) were more likely to choose a sticker from the multi-option array it is possible that children with better EF are more inclined to seek out opportunities for choice The direction and strength of these associations may also be a function of the type of EF measure used (parent report vs Future research should consider including these measures to test for choice overload in children although we considered Left/Right orientation and whether a given sticker would be available from either side we did not systematically account for the potential bias of visual salience It is plausible that children selected from the multi-option array due to the quantity of options being more attention-grabbing We are addressing this limitation in a current study by presenting children with two different arrays to choose from such as one containing 6 identical options and another containing 6 unique options simple salience would not account for the finding that a subset of toddlers chose the singleton on every trial in both studies which was intended to investigate choice overload we demonstrated that toddlers prefer choice over lack of choice using a novel behavioral task suggesting that toddlers' affinity toward choice remained despite an overabundance of options individual differences in EF skills appear to be linked to choice preference future research should clarify the direction and strength of these associations using additional developmentally appropriate tasks to measure choice behavior and EF skills This is a promising area of research to advance our understanding about the development of children's personal agency and autonomy through choice-making and how it relates to Located just outside the city of Castelo Branco, in Portugal, the Quinta do Chinco gardens are a case study on how communities can grow their own food, while nurturing social cohesion. Quinta's atmosphere invites one to contemplate the importance of the environment, sustainability, conservation, healthy eating, and the implications that all this has on our quality of life. Quinta do Chinco is more than a community park or a simple vegetable garden. It’s a new concept called a social garden. Here, citizens of all ages and backgrounds can grow their own, healthy food, learn about organic farming and sustainability, while interacting with other members of the community. By empowering the less fortunate and engaging all citizens, the Quinta do Chinco social gardens have succeeded at growing a new sense of community spirit.   The main goal of the project was to promote social development, social cohesion, and active citizenship through family gardening. By providing economically disadvantaged citizens, or those with a disability, with a garden, the project aimed to help this population group learn new skills, support themselves financially, eat healthier, and become more involved in their communities.   To accomplish this, the project rehabilitated the Quinta do Chinco, an area just outside Castelo Branco.  The renovated gardens include 88 plots, which have been intertwined within the area’s existing architectural and natural heritage. With sustainability at the heart of the project, the gardens are 100 % organic, meaning that no pesticides or fertilisers are used. All gardeners attend a mandatory training on best practices in organic farming, where they learn about topics such as communal water use and traditional soil cultivation.  As the gardens developed, they started attracting the attention of citizens of all ages and backgrounds. In response, the project expanded its scope beyond providing gardens for lower-income citizens. Having now also become an ‘outdoor community centre’ or ‘living lab’, Quinta do Chinco regularly holds classes and activities on environmental protection, the use of natural resources, health and wellbeing, personal nutrition, and outdoor recreation.   Quinta do Chinco has far exceeded its aim of increasing community cohesion and encouraging active citizenship. Already, over 8 000 people have been involved with the social gardens, and the numbers continue to grow. This includes 3 400 people who have participated in one of the garden’s many workshops and educational activities. All the available garden plots have been claimed. The gardeners themselves represent a range of age groups and backgrounds: 41 % are female, 58 % are between the ages of 40 and 60, and 63.5 % are active workers. Together, they have grown over 13 tonnes of produce, which has been shared with other family members, neighbours, and friends.   Total investment for the project “Quinta do Chinco - Hortas Sociais” is EUR 1 009 479, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 680 307 through the “Regional Operational Programme Centro” for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Strengthening social and territorial cohesion”.
