is the third-busiest airport in Portugal (after Lisbon and Faro) based on aircraft movements and passenger numbers
It handles five million passengers and 55,000 aircraft movements a year
the airport welcomed its six-millionth passenger
The airport is situated 11km north-west of the city of Porto
and is managed and operated by national airport company Aeroportos de Portugal SA (ANA)
It has gone through various incarnations throughout its history
and the latest sees it named after a Portuguese politician who died in a plane crash on his way to the airport
one cargo terminal and one 11,417ft-long asphalt-paved runway
the terminal was capable of handling just over three million passengers
ANA became concerned about of its future passenger traffic figures and a plan was formulated to increase the airport’s capacity
It was determined that the passenger terminal
was woefully inadequate to handle the six million passengers that was estimated for 2010
A terminal building worth €108m (covered by a loan from the European Investment Bank) was planned to increase capacity to the required six million
The new glass and concrete structure was built between 2003 and 2006
and was opened in the fourth quarter of 2006
The new facility has increased the amount of space at the airport for check-in; there are two additional luggage carousels and more space for retail concessions and facilities such as coffee shops
a two-level underground car park (1,000 spaces) and a 500-space
The redevelopment of Oporto Airport was designed by one of Portugal’s main architects and design-build consultants ICQ
The ground-breaking design involving five central skylights in the centre of the main terminal roof
which was constructed by engineers WS Atkins
use the Macalloy 460 tendon support system
The concept behind the skylights was to provide maximum natural daylight in the terminal to extenuate the features of the design
The terminal also has a glass wall looking towards the airside so that departing passengers can view aircraft
The terminal extension also contains Macalloy 460 tendons
the Fläkt Woods representative in Portugal
The order included 76 Air Handling Units of various sizes ranging from size EU 22 up to EU 63
Additional projects that came to fruition in 2006 include a new air traffic control tower
which was built to make room for the air terminal extension
which was built at the western end of the runway
a freight receiving area and an access area for ground vehicles
The area also required a new lighting system so that operations could be carried out safely at night
A new training ground for the airport’s fire service was completed in 2007

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Maia will be closed all day today for runway rehabilitation works
Runway rehabilitation works began at the end of July and will take place from Monday to Saturday, between midnight and 06:00 “to minimise the impact on airport operations” throughout the 19 months of work, ANA Aeroportos de Portugal explained in May when signing the contract with Aciona.
When questioned by Lusa, ANA said in a statement that the airport would reopen at 06:00 on the 11th, adding that on this day of total closure, “the remaining interventions will be carried out between 00:00 and 06:00, from Monday to Saturday”, as has been the case until now.
The forecasts indicate that the structural reinforcement works on the runway will be completed in February 2026, ANA also said.
The president of ANA explained that “this date was chosen based on the probability of favourable weather conditions”.
“We are keeping our fingers crossed that the conditions will actually be favourable for the works to be carried out”, he said.

On Aug. 17, 1988, a C-130 military aircraft carrying Pakistani President Zia-ul-Haq, his five generals and US Ambassador Arnold Lewis Raphel crashed near Bahawalpur, approximately 530 kilometers south of the capital Islamabad. In the accident in which there were no survivors, investigators focused on the possibility of sabotage.

An international commission established to investigate the plane crash announced in a report shared with the public after two years of research that the plane crash was the result of "pilot error.”
On April 10, 2010, a Tupolev 154 plane carrying 96 people including Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski and his wife arrived at Russia's Smolensk Airport, where they were to attend a ceremony commemorating the Katyn Massacre, in which approximately 22,000 Poles were executed during the Stalin period. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was not the first leader to die in a helicopter crash
There is a long list of European political and military figures who have been killed in accidents or mysterious incidents despite the often stringent security measures applied to protect them
Most deadly helicopter or plane crashes are caused by technical faults
but some are also linked to wilder conspiracy theories
These are some of the most high-profile cases
was killed in a passenger plane crash in Zambia on 18 September 1961
But the circumstances of the crash are still unclear
The second-ever Secretary-General of the United Nations was on a plane belonging to the Swedish airline Transair bound for the Republic of Congo
He was on his way to participate in ceasefire talks between the UN forces and troops from Katanga
A 1962 inquiry claimed pilot error was to blame
The Guardian reported in 2011 that there was new evidence the plane was shot down over Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia)
with the British colonial authorities allegedly covering up the incident
Mining companies and Russia's former intelligence service
have separately been accused of being behind the alleged plot
Euronews cannot independently verify either claim
Džemal Bijedić was a Bosnian politician who served as Prime Minister of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
who fought in World War II as a Yugoslav Partisan but made a name for himself in a string of high-profile political roles
was killed in 1977 when his Leerjet crashed into the Inač mountain in Bosnia-Herzegovina
His wife Razija and six others were also killed
Bad weather has been blamed for the incident
but that has not stopped conspiracy theorists from suspecting a sinister plot by his rivals
Bijedić was eyed by some as a successor to the ageing Tito
who led the Partisan movement and helmed the socialist state since 1945
died three years later of complications due to gangrene
and Yugoslavia fell apart in a series of wars in the 1990s
Two sons and a daughter survived Bijedić and his wife
A household name since the 1974 Carnation Revolution
Francisco Manuel Lumbrales de Sá Carneiro led the right-wing Democratic Alliance that won Portugal's 1979 general election
the popular politician's Cessna piled into a building just moments after takeoff
An initial joint investigation by police and civil aviation officials ruled that the crash was caused by engine failure
modern chemical analysis of parts of the wreckage of the aircraft in 2004 indicated a bomb was planted beneath the cockpit
Various theories exist that the target of the supposed assassination was Defence Minister Adelino Amaro da Costa
who was travelling with Carneiro and allegedly taking documents relating to the October Surprise conspiracy theory to the UN
The 1980 October Surprise theory claims Ronald Reagan's campaign secretly delayed the release of US hostages in Iran to hurt President Carter's re-election chances
The hostages were released just after Reagan's inauguration
Separate inquiries by the US Congress found insufficient evidence to support this theory
Lech Kaczyński was president of Poland until he died in a plane crash on 10 April 2010
The crash happened near Smolensk in western Russia
dignitaries and Kaczyński's wife were on board the plane meant to take the delegation to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre
where thousands of Polish officers were executed by the Soviets during World War II
The aircraft tried to land in dense fog at Smolensk North Airport despite warnings about the poor weather conditions and advice to divert to another airport
lost control and crashed into the forest near the runway
The crash had significant implications for Poland
It plunged the Eastern European country into mourning and raised questions about decisions leading up to the crash
including possible pressure on pilots and whether the aircraft was adequate
The tragedy also sparked debates about Polish-Russian relations
given the historical context of the Katyn massacre and ongoing political tensions
As Kaczyński was turned into a national martyr figure
his twin brother Jarosław — nationalist right-wing Pis party unofficial leader — used Lech's death to warn of Russian meddling and malign influence in the country
She did not produce evidence for this allegation

Porto’s tourism industry is reaching new heights
with more visitors flocking to the region every year
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport welcomed an impressive 15 million passengers
marking a 20% increase compared to the previous year
questions are being raised about whether the airport can keep up without major expansion plans
the president of Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal
“We’ve seen what years of indecision have done to Lisbon Airport—we must avoid making the same mistakes.”
Porto’s international airport is a cornerstone of the region’s economy and tourism
With the ability to expand to accommodate up to 40 million passengers
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport has the infrastructure needed to support future growth—if plans are put in motion now
“This is the perfect moment to start thinking about the airport’s next chapter,” Martins emphasised
“Sá Carneiro is more than just a transport hub; it’s a key driver of tourism and investment in the North
Tourism leaders are urging collaboration between public and private sectors to ensure Porto remains competitive on the global stage
Martins warned that delaying expansion could jeopardise the city’s position as one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations
but that won’t last forever without careful planning,” he added
“Expanding Sá Carneiro Airport is vital for our long-term success and will solidify Porto’s role as a top destination for travellers worldwide.”
With record-breaking passenger numbers and a booming tourism industry
the message is clear: Porto’s future depends on bold decisions—and it starts with Sá Carneiro Airport

Brazilian superstar Neymar is set to be unveiled as Paris Saint-Germain's world-record £198million signing by the end of the week after undergoing his medical with the French giants in Portugal
Neymar arrived in Porto on his private jet on Wednesday after a brief visit to the Barcelona training ground to say his goodbyes to team-mates
He will sign a five-year deal worth £596,000 a week after tax with a £45m signing-on fee, as revealed by Sportsmail two weeks ago
the deal will cost PSG a mind-boggling £398m
Sportsmail first reported that PSG were confident of smashing the world record for the 25-year-old on July 20
At first Barcelona denied they could lose Neymar
dismissing secret talks between the player’s father and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi as a ploy by the former to get a new contract for his son
But on Wednesday morning Neymar made a 40-minute appearance at Barcelona’s training ground where he met club directors and said goodbye to team-mates
Barcelona then issued a lunchtime statement confirming Neymar had requested to leave before exiting to finalise his move to PSG
On Wednesday night the agent Wagner Ribeiro
who is working with the Neymars on the deal
confirmed the fee will be paid in the next 48 hours and the player could be presented in Paris as early as Friday
Sportsmail understands there was no grand speech in the dressing room when Neymar said farewell
But he embraced team-mates one by one and later Lionel Messi posted on social media: ‘It was a huge pleasure to share these years with you my friend Neymar
I wish you the best of luck in the new stage of your life.’
Barcelona are in no mood for such fond farewells and the club went on the offensive with the player’s father — who is set to earn a huge commission for brokering the deal only 10 months after committing his son to a new contract at the Nou Camp until 2021
Barcelona confirmed they have not paid Neymar’s father commission for that renewal
despite a payment of €25m (£22m) being due last Monday
The club have deposited the money with a lawyer in the city and will take legal advice after Neymar’s transfer has been concluded
to see if they can pay only a percentage of the fee — in keeping with the proportion of the deal which Neymar served
Spanish media reported on Wednesday night that when Neymar met with Barcelona directors on Wednesday morning they were shocked to hear him enquiring when the money owed to his father would be paid
Neymar flew to Porto on Wednesday where he had a medical in the presence of PSG’s Portuguese sporting director Antero Henrique
2) Paul Pogba (Juventus to Manchester United
4) Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United to Real Madrid
7) Romelu Lukaku (Everton to Manchester United
10) James Rodriguez (Monaco to Real Madrid
All that remains is for PSG to deposit the monster fee with the Spanish league
PSG had fought against paying the money as a buy-out clause to the league because it means releasing all the funds immediately and incurring additional tax
But Barcelona were not prepared to allow the French club to treat the transfer as an orthodox deal
They are also likely to put pressure on Uefa to fully investigate how PSG fund the payment of the clause — which they once thought beyond the reach of every club in the world
The full extent of Neymar’s commericial pulling power has been evident over the last week
He was in China on Monday fulfilling various commercial commitments
including pulling on the Rakuten-sponsored Barca shirt he will now not be wearing next season
During the club’s US tour various Barcelona players tried to change his mind but
the club became resigned to losing him after a series of negative meetings with the player and his father
PSG will now use Neymar’s image to promote their club
the French league and the 2022 World Cup to be staged in Qatar
There has even been the suggestion that Neymar will sign a €300m (£269m) five-year publicity contract to promote the Qatar World Cup — a development that will interest UEFA's financial fair play team if it becomes a reality
Barcelona are understood to have already made contact with top Premier League clubs to ensure the game’s governing body thoroughly investigates the French side’s financing
The player’s departure from Barcelona has left a bad taste with supporters
Posters have appeared close to the Nou Camp stadium with dollar signs on Neymar’s face under the words ‘traitor’ and ‘mercenary’
The club must now turn their attention to buying a replacement
Neymar’s playboy lifestyle had raised eyebrows in Spain
But his fondness for partying with British Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton and Canadian singer Justin Bieber
was more than countered by his brilliance on the pitch
There was a training-ground row with Barcelona’s assistant coach Carles Unzue last season
with Unzue urging him not to end up like another Barca Brazilian
whose prolific social life cut short his career
And he also fought with Barcelona summer recruit Nelson Semedo on the club’s tour.
But the good outweighs the bad and PSG have taken a huge step towards their goal of winning the Champions League for the first time by signing the player Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City were offered but could not afford.
Barcelona will begin rebuilding once they have cashed the biggest cheque in the history of the game. Supporters want them to sign Paulo Dybala of Juventus and Monaco desperately want them to enter the race for Kylian Mbappe, to increase his fee.
There are other targets, although Barca have been told 100m euros (£89m) will not be enough to get them Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho. To land Antoine Griezmann this summer will cost €200m (£178m) because his buy-out clause has been doubled for the duration of Atletico Madrid’s transfer ban. They have informed Atletico they will not try to sign him in 2017.
Borussia Dortmund’s Ousame Dembele is also a target, although it will hurt Barca to sign the Frenchman for the £90m asking price after missing out on him last summer when he cost only £15m.
Barcelona star Neymar is off to PSG for world record fee of £198mCommenting on this article has endedNewest{{#isModerationStatus}}{{moderationStatus}}

The major seafood retailers and restaurant franchises rave about the fabulous Patagonian or the European squid they import but those in the know are acutely aware that this is mostly inferior quality and thus cheap and assume that our South African palates won’t know the difference
The fact of the matter is that some of the world’s finest squid and calamari come from the good old Eastern Cape
Us Saffers just don’t get to have it because it is highly sought-after and thus mostly exported to Spain and the other Mediterranean countries for top dollar
It’s a personal gripe of mine that we produce some of the best calamari on the planet but seldom get the chance to taste it
A bit like working in the Ferrari factory but never getting a chance to drive one
when taking a recent trip to the area I made a point of looking up my mate Peet Kemp and booking us a lazy Friday afternoon lunch for a catch-up
a glass of wine and a chat about interesting things and matters of a calamari nature
Now Peet is the unofficial ambassador of the St Francis Bay area and volunteers for everything from the NSRI to the local tourism office
is a major influence in their annual calamari festival
The fact that that he’s also a splendid fellow to lunch with just adds the ice to the proverbial gin
he was constantly prattling on about this little place called Clive’s Chokka Block and how good the food is and
the fact that they are one of the very few eateries in South Africa that serves local St Francis Bay calamari
so I insisted that he book us a table at Clive’s to see if it lived up to his hype
Just as you’d expect at a family-run restaurant
Owned by husband and wife team Clive and Sam Canter
the heavily seafood-orientated menu chalked on the specials blackboard above the kitchen has a decidedly Afro/Mediterranean theme
It’s a classic “Mom & Pop shop” in the best sense
with both of them there most of the time overseeing staff and the kitchen
chatting to customers and dealing with suppliers and stock on the top floor of the aptly named “Squid Centre”
overlooking the bustling harbour of Port St Francis
The aromas that greeted us were already telling tales of the sea
lends itself to that Mozambique/Portuguese harbour scene
chokka boats bobbing in the harbour along with all the noise and bustle of a working wharfside and Sakkie the resident seal flopping around in the water below
Perfect for a lazy catch-up and a chin wag over a sip or two of wine while sampling the frutti di mare
Together with a crisp and refreshing Endless Summer (blonde ale) from the nearby Brewhaha JBay brewery to wash the Karoo dust from my parched throat
our main man Dennis and his sidekick Rochelle brought a perfectly chilled bottle of Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel for my better half Rose and Peet
followed swiftly by a spicy brandy flamed chorizo to kick proceedings off
The blonde ale paired perfectly with the juicy and piquant fermented sausage that is chorizo
with the hint of umami coming through from the brandy flames nicely
while Rose and Peet declared that the spicy smoked paprika flavours and fine bubbles of the vonkel were just a splendid marriage
the amicable and friendly Clive ambled over to offer some advice
but there were so many options to choose from we could not settle on anything specific
so we all decided to pool our resources and order a few different dishes to share
so he opted for a classic burger and chips
Clive chatted to us about the local squid (calamari) industry and how far superior it is to the imported stuff
it may be a fraction tougher than the enzyme-treated imports but it packs a lot more punch in flavour
He is super knowledgeable and even offers calamari tastings as part of the menu
insights into the industry and various ways to prepare it – nice!)
Possibly inspired by Clive and quite unusually
tentacles and strips with hand-cut chips and a salad while Peet ordered the fresh butterflied panga with lashings of lemon
as we generally like to order different things then swap halfway
I scuttled off to fish a bottle of Cederberg rosé out of the nearby wine fridge (it’s that kind of place) and returned to find Peet in the middle of a full-on lecture on how squid is caught
replete with jigs and hand lines – evidently part of Clive’s tasting arsenal – to an enthralled Rose and Max
He was also full of interesting information about the little port itself
It is not only home to a large fleet of squid
hake and pilchard vessels but also charter boats
deep-sea fishing boats and yachts from all over the world
The moorings are surrounded by Mediterranean-style penthouses and apartments and tall palm trees that are home to a large flock of lovebirds
Apparently a local resident’s pet lovebirds escaped from their cage a few years ago and did what their name suggests with magnificent success
The result is that the port has a resident population of wild lovebirds rivalling that of the seagulls
The mains arrived just in time to top up our glasses and appreciate the honest simplicity of the dishes
honest food that makes you think you are on holiday
crunchy outside and soft and floury inside with a little side salad that doubles as a garnish and a small bowl of tartar sauce
lemony bliss with a sprinkling of parsley and a few slices of lemon
Peet’s fresh butterflied panga with lashings of lemon
served on a fresh bun with a layer of sweated onion; pickles
tomato and crispy fresh lettuce finished it off
Photo: Max Wright (just before demolishing it)
Washed down with a glass of the refreshingly dry Cederberg rosé and some Friday afternoon banter
it all made for a most splendid experience
whenever I look for a classic seafood restaurant
it must have a few basics in order to pass muster in my book
I don’t really care about the décor or the sideshows
or the beautiful people swanning by on the promenade
If you get those right you are onto a winner in my book and anything extra is just a bonus
Clive and Sam have nailed it at their Chokka Block and the little Port of St Francis is so much the better for it
Get there before everyone finds out how great it really is and you can’t get a table

One of the main concerns with the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP)
which aims to improve the country's mass public transportation
is the whooping price of modernized jeepneys that cost more than a million pesos
and buses older than 15 years will be phased out to be replaced with modern ones that are Euro-4 compliant vehicles
further supporting the government's goal of providing a "more dignified [and] humane" transport system
To address the concerns about the costs of modern jeepneys
one of the jeepney manufacturers in the country
launched its version of an e-jeepney dubbed "Francisco Jeepney." Its price
a significantly lower rate compared to the proposed modern e-jeep which ranges between P1.3 million to P3 million.
In an interview with Gising Pilipinas of Radyo 630 last December
said the cost for the first 1,000 units of their proposed electric jeep is P985,000 each
Hindi ito kailangang i-import galing sa ibang bansa
Kada piyesa nyan dito sa Pilipinas gagawin," he said
Elmer also stated that a Special Economic Zone will be built to produce these electric jeeps
He also claimed that if they proceed with full operations
they could produce up to 25,000 e-jeeps annually
In a Facebook post, Francisco noted that the jeepney manufacturing company will no longer create diesel-empowered jeepneys for several reasons: the need to modernize
combat the alarming increase in fuel prices
"Replacing old fossil fuel-powered Jeepneys with new fossil fuel-powered ones is not changing anything
Francisco Motors have decided to go all in and go full electric and set-up charging nationwide stations powered by renewable energy," he said in a conversation with PhilSTAR L!fe.
this move will also cater to more job opportunities for Filipinos.
"Among the impacts that are very close to our hearts is that we can generate tens of thousands of direct jobs and millions of indirect jobs for our fellow Filipinos at home
If we simply import mini-buses to replace our Jeepneys
we would be giving away jobs that are supposed to be for our fellow Filipinos to foreigners mostly to China," he told L!fe.
Tembo E-LV
has signed a joint venture agreement with Francisco Motor Corporation to develop and supply electric utility vehicle (EUV) electrification kits for a new generation of electric jeepneys
the iconic 'King of the Road' look will remain despite the modernization process of the vehicle
"We came up with the modernized full electric Francisco Jeepney in order to preserve; moreover
of which the Jeepney is a huge part," Francisco told L!fe.
"Anywhere you go in the world when you mention 'jeepney' to any foreigner
the only place that will come to mind is the Philippines
It is often part of their bucket list to have their photos taken in one of our very colorful Jeepneys," he continued
adding that removing the iconic designed Jeepneys with mini-buses from other countries is like removing a piece of our identity
why replace these beautiful iconic designed Jeepneys with mini-buses from other countries when we Filipinos practically invented the jeepney
It would be like remov[ing] a piece of our identity."
the Francisco Jeepney also features an electronic door at the main entrance/exit on the front right side for safe loading and unloading
It is equipped with an emergency exit that doubles as an entrance for wheelchair passengers as it has a built-in ramp
said that the updated design was a result of careful evaluation and consultation of its prototypes with different PWD Associations
the full electric jeepney also has a 4-channel CCTV system
and speed limiter (80kph) for security purposes
It will also use an "Automated Fare Collection System" wherein passengers may pay using their phones' QR codes or NFC (Near Field Communication) Cards that they can simply tap
Other features include onboard audio and video equipment for passengers' entertainment
All units are also fully airconditioned and can accommodate 30 passengers
with 11 seated on each side plus eight standing passengers
Fransisco also emphasized that a passenger up to 5'9" tall can stand comfortably inside the e-jeep.
Potential buyers can reserve their units here
They can also receive updates on Francisco Motors' electric jeep by signing up on its website
and corporations can buy a full electric Francisco Jeepney directly from them
the Department of Transportation has earmarked P280,000 equity subsidies for the first 5,000 units sold in 2024
Francisco assured jeepney drivers of financing options with his company's TsuperHero Program
"With the TsuperHero Program of Francisco Motors
jeepney operators no longer need to borrow money from banks to buy our jeepneys because we have a much better program for them of which they will even earn more than what they are already earning," he said
they are prioritizing their "own jeepney operators who have already consolidated with Francisco Motors before the December 31
we have already received Letters of Intent to purchase of over 37,500 units from various transport cooperatives and corporations of which we have already received over 1,300 units of purchase orders out of the 37,500 to date," Francisco shared
The rollout of the Francisco Jeepney will be by batch starting in the second quarter of 2024
