Maria Guedes and Daniel Mota about Paraíso
which features never-before-seen archive footage of raves in castles and interviews with key figures from Portuguese dance music history
A new documentary digging into Portugal’s rave and dance music history is set to be released
The illuminating 78-minute film maps out a dance music movement that took root in the early ‘90s during the emergence of rave culture
Knitted together from hours of never-before-seen home footage
Paraíso takes viewers backstage at parties and straight to the heart of 5,000-person raves in castles
The extensive VHS archives were amassed from private collectors and national broadcasters Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) and Sociedade Independente de Comunicação (SIC)
Guests often spoke about flyers and footage they had stashed away at home
which sparked the idea for a visual project
“We realised right from the start that radio would not be the ideal medium to tell this story as it would be incomplete because it lacks the visual side of it all,” Ervedosa told DJ Mag
Armed with “three or four IKEA bags full of VHS tapes,” Ervedosa and Guedes used their holidays to go through the footage
which spanned everything from home-taped Portuguese television shows and adult videos to candid handycam footage from parties
whatever would be in the party,” said Guedes
“And it was all so cool to watch because it looks like a party from the future
And it looked very intentional and very fun,” she added
“Someone had a handycam at the castle rave,” continued Guedes
And everyone was just vibing in a fucking castle...
In order to bring the expansive project to life
the pair linked up with director Daniel Mota
They began shooting in-person contributor interviews around 2017
favouring an interview style that paired people based on their prior relationship within music
Subjects were often interviewed in a location that held some significance to their musical involvement
Mota recalled his initial doubts about being able to pull it all off
until they came across the work of photographer Da Fonseca
“He had an absurd amount of photographs from that time,” said Mota
this is why this documentary hasn't been made before
Following the painstaking digitisation of some 1,000 photographs
the Paraíso documentary began to take shape
One of the historic aspects that stood out for Mota was the way in which the Portuguese media haplessly handled the surging rave movement at the time
There’s one Portuguese journalist who describes it as ‘the raven party,’” he recalled
Mota’s eyes were opened to a rave history about which he knew very little
“A lot of people don't know about what happened in this space of Portuguese music
“I think it surprised me how emotional I got
not only because of the time that was spent making this movie
Guedes was impressed by the decentralised aspect of the scene
“That's one of the most iconic things we learned
it was not focused on either Lisbon or Porto at all.”
“Because there were more [events] in these cities
but the rest were happening everywhere,” agreed Ervedosa
really organised and all done by themselves,” said Guedes of the DIY ethos of the movement
This DIY approach extended to the making of the documentary. “It was all done with Daniel's equipment. Inês [Coutinho – aka Violet, who assisted on the film] and me and João and Marco [Rodrigues – aka Photonz
who also assisted] would have hair ties pulling up the mics and stuff
It was all as DIY as you can get,” explained Guedes
Paraíso depicts the golden age of ‘90s rave culture in Portugal while zooming out on some of its landmark moments
such as the international success of ‘Touch Me’
“I think when Portuguese media caught up to the club scene
mainstream and slightly less interesting,” offered Mota of dance music’s commercial transition
“We're always talking a lot about whether this is a documentary that we want to see
because some of those guys who achieved that level of popularity are right now personal trainers
and it’s also a really harsh criticism of the way Portugal treats its culture
it’s just that Portugal doesn't handle its cultural beings
and the governments keep on not supporting culture.”

one of the leading organisers of the event
will be hosting its 21st edition over the five days
during which time it will host a variety of swimwear brands
Vogue Mexico and Latin America will also be leading a runway show for Latin-owned swim and resort wear brands
New on the agenda for this season is Paraiso’s strategic partnership with The Ritz-Carlton
pop-up shopping experience and a show for the brand Sigal at its oceanfront venue
It will also be the first time the event will hold its Swimwear Icons Hall of Fame initiative
visionaries and icons “who have shaped the swimwear industry”
to be hosted by Sports Illustrated Swimsuit star Camille Kostek
with special honours to be given throughout the night to “tastemakers” like Molly Sims
A series of runway shows throughout the fashion week will spotlight swim
as well as notable collaborations between brands such as Montce Swimwear and Quay Sunglasses
These will run alongside interactive activations
The week will kick off with a Shan x Select Model Management at Mila Lounge
before rounding out with an invite-only closing party by Contra and Wilhelmina at Casa Neos
Paraiso has continued to reaffirm its position as what its co-founder
says is a “trusted and influential force in the fashion world”
This is underlined by the organiser’s predictions for this year; with over 30,000 attendees forecast to descend on Paraiso Miami Swim Week
Paraiso’s emphasis on its status comes at a time when the firm is facing legal challenges regarding the Miami Swim Week name
The company has been in a long-lasting dispute over the ‘Miami Swim Week’ trademark with its competitor
an event run by DC Swim Week Group that is held simultaneously to Paraiso Miami Swim Week
had announced a “major legal victory” back in March
when it stated that a court had ruled for DCSW’s trademark registration for ‘Miami Swim Week’ to be cancelled
Funkshion had alleged DCSW’s trademark had been “improperly registered” and was "causing confusion among the industry”
DCSW has since retaliated by filing a lawsuit in Florida against Funkshion for trademark infringement
false representation and fraudulent claims
challenging Paraiso’s own trademark application by alleging that it is “based on false specimens of use and declarations”
this coming edition of Paraiso Miami Swim Week “holds great significance as the recent court ruling affirmed our exclusive right to the Miami Swim Week trademark”
Dedic-Stojanovic said: “This decision strengthens our resolve to protect the integrity of the swimwear industry’s leading platform
ensuring it remains free from trademark infringement

A man accused of stealing a Rolls-Royce from a Miami neighborhood was arrested on Sunday, police said.
According to Miami Police, the theft of the $400,000 Black Badge Rolls-Royce happened in a matter of minutes that same morning at the luxury Paraiso Bayviews condominiums in Edgewater.
The vehicle's owner, Jonathan Sanchez, said he was heading to an urgent care center when he moved the car from his parking spot to the valet area.
Police said Sanchez told the valet to watch his car while he ran upstairs to get his wallet. He left the vehicle running and unlocked, but took the key with him.
Get local news you need to know to start your day with NBC 6's News Headlines newsletter.
As Sanchez ran upstairs, he said his phone started ringing. It was the valet, saying someone had stolen his car.
According to authorities, the suspect, 36-year-old James Brown had "walked up to the vehicle and said, 'This is my car,'" hopped in and drove off.
"I'm like, how does this happen? I gave you the car. You just let him get in the car and roll off?" Sanchez said. "I'm furious, but what comes to mind first is just, do better."
Sanchez said surveillance images show Brown approaching the Rolls-Royce and driving away.
"You're supposed to feel safe in your area. You're not supposed to feel like you need to safeguard your stuff," the victim said.
Sanchez said he contacted police and Rolls-Royce to track the thief. He and a friend drove around Little Haiti until they were able to track the car down to a gas station at Northwest 7th Avenue and Northwest 54th Street.
When police arrived, they said Brown had already gotten out of the car and a customer told them he was at the AutoZone "across the street having a confrontation" with a witness.
When police approached, Brown allegedly took off, running through the parking lot and jumping a fence at the back of the property.
Eventually he was caught and charged with grand theft of a vehicle, resisting an officer without violence and petty theft. His bond court hearing is set for Monday morning.
A picture shows the subject pinned to the ground as officers handcuff him.
Sanchez, meanwhile, got his car back—but in rough shape. He said it had been crashed into a pole several times.
"The chassis, the suspension, windows are cracked, vandalized inside," he said. "It's just sad to see that something so careless could've just been prevented by doing simple procedures."
NBC6 has requested comment from Paraiso Bayviews about the theft.

2025Felipe Gustavo has been killing it for as long as I remember
You could say the dud is known for his technical precision and effortless style
but he's more than just another talented skateboarder
His latest adidas Skateboarding shoe just dropped—a sleek new Superstar ADV with hints of Felipe's aesthetic peppered in—and the Three Stripes squad just dropped a bangin' new video part to celebrate
Shot by Chris Mulhern (only mentioning that so you know it's the real deal)
the part follows Felipe as he tears through the pristine marble plazas of Eastern Asia alongside Vincent Milou and Miles Silvas
You know how people will refer to certain places as concrete playgrounds
The Vincent Milou and Miles Silvas clips are obviously a nice touch—total bonus—but Felipe is still the star of the show here
The way he pieces together some of these lines will make the heaviest pros in the game a little envious.

Colombian actor Fabián Ríos has been secluded for weeks at the estate where Telemundo's reality show 'Los 50' is filmed. Before the show, he spoke with ENSTARZ ¡Latino!
Among his upcoming projects is a return to his iconic character
in the next chapter of the 'Sin Senos Sí Hay Paraíso' saga
I'll push through," Ríos said before his isolation began
The outdoor setting drew him to the experience
"I love the countryside; that's where I come from
Ríos knows that some colleagues have left similar shows with damaged reputations
"I've never been under pressure like this and wanted to test myself..
That's part of life and the risks we need to take
A post shared by instagram
"We were about to start a new season of 'Sin Senos,' but it got postponed, allowing me to do 'Los 50' instead. I'm certain that once 'Los 50' wraps, preproduction for 'Sin Senos' will begin, along with a film we have lined up in the Dominican Republic," he said
With 'Sin Senos' returning, Ríos steps into the role of Albeiro for the sixth time. He first portrayed the character in the Telemundo telenovela 'Sin Senos no hay paraíso,' followed by three seasons of 'Sin Senos Sí Hay Paraíso,' and later 'El Final del Paraíso,' which was initially seen as a farewell to the characters.
"It's been an incredible role since the day [writer] Gustavo Bolívar created it. It fits me like a glove, a huge blessing from God. I'll play him as long as I can. Until when? Until God wills it, right? I'm very grateful," he concluded.

a Rosewood Resort provided TPG with a complimentary three-night stay so that we could get an inside look at the hotel and its amenities
The opinions expressed below are entirely those of the author and weren't subject to review by the hotel or any external entity
The coast of Los Cabos at the southern end of Baja California brims with luxury resorts such as the new Four Seasons Cabo San Lucas at Cabo del Sol and Zadun, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
The towns and villages in the region were often overrun by caravaning surfers
sport fishers on the hunt for a record catch and spring breakers out to party
Las Ventanas al Paraiso introduced a new level of luxury for the once-sleepy area
Set along a golden sand beach with low-rise white stucco buildings
dramatically curving pools and gourmet restaurants serving elevated Mexican cuisine
a Rosewood Resort soon became the byword for luxury in Los Cabos
The first time I stayed there was over a decade ago
so I was eager to experience the hotel again after visiting many of the area's newer resorts
I wanted to see if it could still set the standard for a high-end stay in Cabo
is located along Los Cabos' so-called Golden Corridor — a stretch of highway between the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo
From Los Cabos International Airport (SJD)
it takes about 30 minutes and costs around $30 to $50
depending on whether you use a ride-hailing service or a taxi company
The town of San Jose del Cabo is about a 20-minute
$20 ride away; Cabo San Lucas is 20 minutes and $20 in the other direction
For the best rates and limited-time packages
including fourth-night-free reservations with free daily breakfast (available at time of publication)
You'll receive perks like availability-based upgrades
up to a $100 credit to use on-property during your stay for things like drinks or meals
complimentary daily breakfast for two and guaranteed late checkout
Unfortunately, the hotel does not participate in Chase's The Edit or the Capital One Premier Collection
Beware that taxes and service charges can add an extra 35% to your bill
Arriving guests veer off the highway and past imposing white walls down a palm-lined drive
The shift of tone from hectic to halcyon is palpable

your gaze might drift past a cadre of smiling
waving staff – one of whom might even present you with a frosty
foamy lemonade — to the sweeping views over the resort's main pool and the Sea of Cortez beyond
Get to know the hotel's layout more intimately as your personal butler gives you a guided tour
drifting along the succulent- and bougainvillea-bordered paths
You'll also pass the sun-dappled Sea Grill
where other (mostly American … mostly from California and Texas) guests are likely lingering over a leisurely lunch of fresh-caught fish and wood-fired pizzas
You'll notice the clientele ranges from romantic couples to multigenerational groups
you might never want to leave — especially if yours has a private pool along with its own patio or terrace
But it would be a shame to miss out on the resort's many amenities or the chance to stroll down the nearly deserted beach
you just might find a personalized sewing kit with thread colors selected to match your vacation wardrobe
This is another of the many "only-here" touches at Las Ventanas al Paraiso
The accommodations at Las Ventanas al Paraiso range from spacious (starting at 960 square feet) Junior Suites to the palatial
Guests of the mansion are served by a dedicated chef and can even request private fireworks displays

which measured up at 3,900 square feet of indoor-outdoor space
was at the western edge of the property; it had its own set of steps down to the beach from the vast outdoor area
The exterior space included a shaded sea-facing lounge area
an infinity-edge pool with a fire pit and desert landscaping
a sunbathing deck and even a wet bar of sorts if you wanted to entertain

Previous slideNext slide1 of 5ERIC ROSEN/THE POINTS GUY01234The villa also had its own small private kitchen for in-room catering (where room service would drop off items if I had my do-not-disturb sign on) and both coffee- and tea-making amenities

The hotel offers guests a sheet menu where they can choose from options like Egyptian cotton

shelves holding vases and art books and a fireplace
Another special touch: There was a candle diffuser with a menu of mood-based scent options that housekeeping would illuminate at turndown to perfume the room
there was a large closet with plenty of space to store suitcases and hang clothes; there was also a hulking wardrobe with drawer space
Stocked with a plethora of Bulgari The Vert products
the Travertine-accented bathroom had two painted tile sinks set into a single counter with a large mirror
A separate water closet held the toilet and bathing area
which featured a jetted tub with jars of scented bath salts and oils as well as a walk-in shower

I enjoyed a hearty crabcake with green apple

An extensively renovated house built in 1924 in the lake block of Brazilian Avenue in Midtown Palm Beach, Florida has sold for a recorded $15.5 million
Known as Villa Del Paraiso, the Mediterranean-style house had been the home of the late Eleanor J. Gross and her late husband, real estate developer Ronald “Ron” S. Gross. He died at 84 on Jan. 2
a little more than two years after his wife’s death
The four-bedroom house was sold by Laura Rosenberg and Jane Greenblatt
who acted as co-trustees and personal representatives of their father’s estate
The family has longtime ties to the Philadelphia area
The buyer on Brazilian Avenue was a Colorado limited liability company
with a mailing address in care of O2B Services LLC of Chicago
No other information about the buying entity was available in public records
the house that just sold stands on a narrow lot of two-tenths of an acre on the south side of Brazilian Avenue
The Grosses’ bought the property for about $3.5 million in 2017
The subsequent renovation effectively rebuilt the house
repositioning the front door and making other changes to the layout
Photographs used to market the property show interiors finished with a blend of traditional- and contemporary-style elements
oversized French doors with a dark-gray finish
a Parisian-style elevator and a sleek kitchen accented by dark-wood cabinets
The Corcoran Group’s sales description described the house as having “Old World architecture integrated with today’s finest interior finishes and premier products.”
The guest quarters attached to the house have a layout that provides them with separate entrances to ensure privacy
high hedges screen the brick-paved patio and the pool with a whirlpool spa at one end
More luxury homes: House sells near Trump's Mar-a-Lago, marks fourth sale there since mid-December
The property was co-listed by Corcoran agents Shelly Newman and Kerry Warwick
Agent Senada Adzem of Douglas Elliman Real Estate handled the buyer’s side of the sale
She and Newman declined to discuss the transaction
Ron Gross pursued a real estate career that included historic restorations and residential and commercial developments
He initially practiced law in Philadelphia
before founding American Equity Properties of Elkins Park
He and his wife were married 59 years. She died on Dec. 3, 2020, according to her obituary
Ron Gross also owned a condominium in Palm Beach, property records show. He paid $4.5 million for that two-bedroom apartment, No. D1, at 100 Royal Palm Way last July. He had his apartment homesteaded as his primary residence in the latest Palm Beach County tax rolls
Newman and Warwick have the Royal Palm Way apartment listed for sale at $5.25 million

the leading organiser behind global swimwear show Miami Swim Week
has said that it has secured a “major legal victory” in an ongoing legal dispute over the trademark rights of the ‘Miami Swim Week’ name against another event producer from out of state
the ruling will cancel a trademark registration from the Miami Swim Week The Shows
which reportedly was “causing confusion among the industry and its consumers.”
It must be noted that no final ruling has been made against DCSW’s ownership of the ‘Miami Swim Week’ trademark
which is still currently registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and remains under the ownership of the DCSW Group
Funkshion’s trademark application for ‘Miami Swim Week’ is still pending with the USPTO and legal proceedings in regards to the dispute between the two organisers remains ongoing
The two event organisers have been embroiled in a legal dispute since 2022
with both hosting independent schedules during the period with a varying line up of presenting brands
Funkshion said that the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board determined that DCSW’s Miami Swim Week The Shows had “improperly registered” the ‘Miami Swim Week’ trademark
the event producer’s ongoing use of the phrase was leading to a misunderstanding among consumers of the differences in events
the ruling alleged there was evidence that the out-of-state event had used images from Paraiso Miami Swim Week’s fashion shows without permission
reinforcing its perceived intent to leverage and capitalise on the event’s leading reputation
DCSW has since filed a federal lawsuit in the Southern District of Florida against Funkshion for trademark infringement
The filing challenges Paraiso’s trademark application
which DCSW has alleged is “based on false specimens of use and declarations”
DCSW is calling on the court to “review and vacate a recent decision” made by the Trademark and Appeal Board
underlining the company’s intent to “stop Paraiso and Funkshion from wrongfully asserting ownership of its registered trademark”
"This ruling reaffirms Paraiso Miami Swim Week’s unwavering commitment to protecting Miami Swim Week mark
and counterfeiting,” said Natalija Dedic-Stojanovic
co-founder & creative director of Paraiso Miami Swim Week to FashionUnited
we’ve built a trusted space for brands that set trends and shape the future of swimwear
Defending our intellectual property is not just about safeguarding our legacy
it’s about ensuring integrity in our industry
and the evolution of the swim and resort markets as key pillars of global fashion."
As Miami continues to evolve into a global focal point for swimwear and swim fashion
the importance of events like Paraiso Miami Swim Week is thrown into sharper focus
As a multi-platform event that brings together key players from the industry
the event helps capture Miami’s signature energy and leverage it into real swimwear sales for an 18.85 billion dollar market
“This decision sends a strong message about protecting intellectual property and the hard work behind building a reputable platform and brand,” said Aleksandar Stojanovic
the official producer of Paraiso Miami Swim Week
“Miami Swim Week is an internationally recognized event
and this ruling helps safeguard its identity from being misrepresented.”
The ruling comes ahead of the upcoming Miami Swim Week and further cements Paraiso Miami Swim Week’s positioning in the industry as the definitive authority on Miami Swim Week
With the 2025 season set to run from May 28 to June 1
the upcoming edition will showcase an extended lineup of designers
and revised programming to help support and form the future of the swimwear industry
Paraiso Miami Swim Week 2025 will feature top swimwear brands on the runway and at exclusive poolside presentations
and experience exclusive brand activations
the event will also honor swimwear icons who have shaped the industry for past and future generations

With killer performances from Brown as a top Secret Service agent and James Marsden as the president he is sworn to protect
thought-provoking thriller is an absolute winner
Who could ask for more? This article is more than 3 months oldWith killer performances from Brown as a top Secret Service agent and James Marsden as the president he is sworn to protect
about a brilliant cleaner-slash-intellectual who becomes her local homicide department’s most dazzling crime solver
more prestigious and higher-concepted endeavour that provides just as much entertainment bang for your watching buck as the others
the last 10 days or so have been like working your way through an absolutely winning box of audio-visual chocolates
Paradise is hard to write about without spoiling an important part of the concept
The story is set in what seems to be the classic American idyll – an affluent town full of professionals and large houses in the ’burbs
with neat gardens and safe streets for children to play in
Sterling K Brown (maintaining his recent run of great roles and performances) stars as Xavier Collins
a widower and Secret Service agent appointed five years ago – we see
in flashback – to lead the recently re-elected president’s protection detail
played by James Marsden – who arguably has never become an A-list actor because he is too good at everything and can’t be easily slotted into a producer or viewer’s mind as the man for that kind of thing
in his genuine wish to do right by America and its people (when “the world is 19 times more fucked than anyone realises”); part Bill Clinton – the supposed dark side
a southern progressive who chooses Collins not just because he’s the best
but because it doesn’t hurt his optics to be seen with a Black man by his side
because the responsibility of everything weighs so heavily on him
The presidential safe is open and a boxful of national security secrets is missing

Photograph: Brian Roedel/APCollins is the man who discovers him and who shortly thereafter finds himself as a possible suspect
Courtesy of more flashbacks and minor reveals foreshadowing the big one
more and more reasons for his hatred of a man for whom he once took a bullet emerge
It is partly the light racism (“Does my directness bother you?”)
partly something to do with the death of Collins’ wife
and partly something to do with the idyllic surroundings which simply cannot be as idyllic as they seem
Building elsewhere in the first three episodes released by Disney is a plotline involving Julianne Nicholson as a tech billionaire shaping up to be the real power behind the throne (one of many timely touches – like Bradford dismissing his re-election because he beat “an idiot goldendoodle” – that are never overplayed)
and who is also pursued by a terrible grief
the delicious and compelling concept will have you hooked – but the greatest achievement of Paradise is to keep the psychology of the inhabitants as its prime concern
The premise may be essentially ridiculous (or is it?) but the people are real and there is an unsettling air suffusing the atmosphere from the beginning
The series gradually becomes – amid the well-wrought whodunnit-and-why plot – a thought-provoking interrogation of what impact the life-changing decision the town’s inhabitants made would have on a community
what fractures us individually and collectively
and how you reconcile bereavements and other awful
All of this is helped along by a script that is much better than it needs to be and doesn’t forget to scatter some witty lines over the whole
and Brown in particular – an actor with limitless gravitas as well as charisma
who can play every nuance there is to find and who cannot help but encourage his audience to think too

parent company of Miami Swim Week - The Shows
has filed a lawsuit against its competitor
as it seeks to protect its claim of the ‘Miami Swim Week’ trademark
The move comes after the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled that DCSW had “improperly registered” the trademark and that its ongoing use of the phrase was leading to alleged misunderstandings among consumers.
While DCSW maintains ownership of the trademark, currently registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Paraiso’s parent company, Funkshion Labs LLC, claimed the ruling could ultimately cancel the registration in its favour.
Funkshion’s attempt to file its own ‘Miami Swim Week’ trademark with the USPTO is currently pending.
Now, however, DCSW is stepping up in an effort to retain its ownership rights, appointing the law offices of Elysa Galloway and Charlotte Towne Law to file a federal lawsuit in regards to the registration dispute with the Southern District of Florida.
In the filing, DCSW alleges that Funkshion Labs LLC had infringed on its trademark, enacted “false representation” and had made “fraudulent claims of prior use”. Next to calling for legal declaration reaffirming its ownership of the ‘Miami Swim Week’ mark, DCSW is also seeking damages, attorney fees and injunctive relief.
In a statement to FashionUnited, DCSW said: “The lawsuit challenges Paraiso’s trademark application for Miami Swim Week, which DCSW alleges is based on false specimens of use and declarations, and asks the Court to review and vacate a recent decision in the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
“DCSW is committed to enforcing its rights in ‘Miami Swim Week’ to prevent confusion in the marketplace and stop Paraiso and Funkshion from wrongfully asserting ownership of its registered mark.”

Jaén pressed relentlessly and Barça looked to use counter attack but with little success
The home side sent out a warming hitting the post before João Salla gave them the lead on 13 minutes
Barça hit back just five minutes later when captain Lozano picked up a rebound to finally find the net
The second half did not start auspiciously for Tino Pérez's team as Rosa stole the ball from blaugrana keeper Dídac to make it 2-1
captain Lozano came to the rescue to make it 2-2 and despite chances for a both side
the extra period was not to end happily - Jaén took the lead with Rosa again on target and without time to react

This connection to culinary traditions is exemplified in the story of Trixia Paraiso and her family who
after migrating from the Philippines in 2005
quickly immersed themselves in the local Filipino dining scene
They bought a restaurant called Kusina Filipina in Beacon Hill
and a young Paraiso would watch her parents and older sister moving throughout the kitchen—the smells reminding her of the family’s old restaurant in the Philippines
and gather around the tables in family groups
it was just a chore for her; a way to contribute to the family’s main source of income
“It’s kind of instilled upon us at a young age to help the family whenever you can
“So when my parents and my sister took the risk of investing most of our savings into the restaurant
I knew the best way for me to help is to be in the restaurant.”
Paraiso continued to be a helping hand for her family
but one day realized that being in the kitchen felt natural to her
She enjoyed cooking for friends and family
“I knew that [with] the background I had with the restaurant and growing up in the Philippines
that this is something that I could do for the rest of my life
with this community that we are now a part of,” Paraiso said
Although she didn’t attend culinary school
Paraiso knew that food was a way she could both represent the Filipino culture of her past and share it with the broader Seattle community she is now a part of
The Paraiso family started a food truck in 2016
called CheBogz — the name was chosen as a homage to the Paraiso parents as a nod to their nicknames
Kusina Filipina closed down in 2017 due to a rent hike
The family eventually rallied community support to open a new restaurant
The menu from Kusina Filipina to CheBogz was simplified to feature only key dishes
such as a plate with a combination of ribs
“That one has always been a hit in the food truck because they have the meaty party and then the sweet
savory garlic flavor of the sausage,” Paraiso said
“You have your two carbs which are the rice and the noodles
It’s a hit for everyone no matter how old they are.”
The community was able to raise over $48,000 through Kickstarter so the Paraiso’s could open CheBogz in a newly finished building in Beacon Hill in 2023
CheBogz keeps the flavors and dishes very traditional
While they are open to creating more experimental dishes in the future
Paraiso’s current focus is on providing Filipinos with a space where they can sit down and enjoy distinctly Filipino flavors
She also wants to preserve these tastes so she can pass them down to her own daughter
“Allowing people that experience of going to a restaurant and having that moment where they are like ’Oh my God
I went to family parties that served this dish and it tasted just like this,’” Paraiso said
“Those are really the compliments that we look for and that keep us going.”
Paraiso is far from the only chef in Seattle who was inspired by her family and wants to share their Filipino heritage through food

“It’s really important for him to maintain our cultural identity and to know Filipino food,” Miranda said
“I’m really grateful that my dad pressed it and made me proud of what I am and the food.”
Musang is an opportunity to show the Seattle community what Filipino flavors can taste like while also integrating Pacific Northwest ingredients
Musang includes green apples as they are in season right now and add a nice sour agent to the dish
it’s giving them the opportunity to have a space where they can celebrate
and being able to see their food at a restaurant and not just at home,” Miranda said

the flavors of Filipino food are not just what make it important
it’s not just all about ’Oh I need to eat to stay alive.’”
Cordova was born in Seattle and both sides of his family are immigrants from the Philippines
“The best way to get people to open up their mouths is to stuff food in it.”
“I have always eaten Filipino food and know the unique flavor profile,” Cordova said
“ I really like learning from my grandmother
she makes really good adobo and my dad is more of a soup person
Cordova said his favorite dish is dinuguan—pork cooked in pork blood
He described the memory of how his mother convinced him to try it for the first time
“I was about 5 years old and my mom told me it was ’chocolate meat.’ I was like ’I don’t think that tastes good,’ but I tried it
It’s now one of my favorite dishes ever.”
Cordova goes to food gatherings throughout Seattle and UW
Cordova has even started taking on cooking himself
His recommended beginner dish is chicken tinola
a soup dish just like what his father enjoys making
“Everybody has their secret ingredients or secret method of preparing their food,” Cordova said
“As long as it’s good and as long as they’re learning
