Carve-outs and exceptions on new and used cars crossing Canada's border is good, right? Not necessarily, say industry experts

you can be forgiven if you’re getting lost in one of the world’s most consequential games of who’s-on-first
called the recent shifts in the car industry a five-headed monster
The impact on the used car landscape will be tangible
Desrosiers Consultants report a year-over-year increase in sales of over 10% for April—huge numbers
Current inventory on dealer lots is un-tariffed
it will be replenished with vehicles (as of this writing) sporting a fresh
Many manufacturers are reporting record sales
with Park saying Clutch has been buying new inventory at the rate of $2 million per day
He says they are currently seeing only modest year-over-year price increases in that space based on strong March and April sales as consumers make moves
He knows tariffs will completely change the complexion of the auto industry
but he also notes where consumers can look for some relief: “[Clutch] buys cars from their owners here in Canada
A closed-loop system is more resistant to tariffs,” says Park
He’s quick to point out Canada’s vehicle supply doesn’t just come from the U.S.
and headlines intended to get attention can also unnecessarily rattle buyers
Get your instant cash offer in under 2 minutes
the advice remains the same: if you’re already in the market for a new vehicle
Even untariffed vehicles could be subject to increased freight costs if they’re coming from farther away
or could be hit with parts costs increases even if they’re assembled here
Beware of unscrupulous sellers trying to tell you a car in their current inventory – a model you know is made here
or imported from somewhere other than the U.S
Used-car prices are on the rise; if you already own a car
Subaru announced recently that it would fill its Canadian inventory needs from Japan rather than the U.S.; Hyundai will pull Canadian-market Tucsons from Mexico; Mazda’s model line for Canada comes almost entirely from Japan; and now we can likely look for other makers to start feeding the Canadian market with similar workarounds
They use an algorithm to determine how much they’ll pay to buy a car from a private seller
as well as to figure out what they’ll sell it for; they do total reconditioning and necessary upgrading in-house
Looming tariff implications are unavoidable
but Park notes they’re also making life difficult for an industry predicated on long-term planning
“Practical implementation of these tariffs
makes for impossible tracking and calculations,” he says
His concern is echoed in every boardroom around the globe
senior manager of Insights and Residual Value Strategy
has noted a recent trend in the used-car market that consumers should take note of
“We have not yet seen the impact on price via tariffs for new cars
the used retail space has quickly moved pricing up as an anticipation of consumers flocking towards used vehicles again,” he says
and prices moving so quickly on the aggregate raises a flag.” Perhaps Clutch’s ‘closed-loop’ sourcing and selling is buffering out some of what CBB is noticing
Do people think Alfa Romeos are made in the U.S.?” Now is the time to learn where the vehicle you’re contemplating is made
and not to fall for unscrupulous retailers trying to capitalize on consumers who are being bombarded by headlines
Dan Park mused about the global redistribution that is taking place in the car industry
“It would be interesting to see if Porsche sends fewer vehicles to the U.S.
could [Porsche] prices here go down?” He says it with a smile
but that’s the kind of point-of-origin consideration consumers actually need to keep in mind as manufacturers do redistribute their stock
He also sees reason for optimism after this week’s step-down on the parts tariffs
“This is a positive development that helps offset the impact of the 25% tariffs
It’s an encouraging sign that the broader effort to shield the industry from severe disruption remains underway,” says Park
“I continue to believe we’ll see further concessions
especially in response to strong pushback from OEMs and the broader sector
which gives reason for optimism that a reasonable middle ground will emerge in the months ahead.”
Daniel Ross is staring at used retail numbers that defy explanation
the consensus is clear: it’s the uncertainty that is going to prevail
and it’s the uncertainty that is doing the damage
but to the reckless administration to the south of us
the incessant uncertainty will cost vehicle buyers on both sides of the border
It is also destroying livelihoods and thwarting long-term planning
The goal of protecting The Big Three will just result in creating The Medium Three
and that’s probably being generous in both size and number
no matter how big a “no trespassing” sign you put on your door
helping decipher a complicated industry for consumers who just need good information
ask her anything - except to do a car review

It is with great sadness the family of Lorraine Schmidt are announcing her passing

Lorraine was an angel here and now she will be watching over us
Lorraine leaves to mourn the love of her life Gord; her beautiful children: Allen (Terri)

We are grateful for her strength and wisdom
She was a kind and beautiful woman who was always excited and going out of her way to help family
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one
I’d like to leave an echo whispering
I’d like the tears of those who grieve
to dry before the sun of happy memories

Presenter of ITV’s Lorraine morning show says she expects to be ‘totally fine’ after surgery
TV presenter Lorraine Kelly has revealed she is having surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes
The 65-year-old said in a post on Instagram that the operation was “purely preventative”
She said the procedure was going to be done using keyhole surgery
Kelly said in the post: “I just wanted to let you know I’m having a wee procedure today
“I’ve not been feeling all that well for a little while
and I have to have my ovaries and my tubes taken out.”
the presenter said she felt “very lucky to be treated so well” and thanked gynaecologist Dr Ahmed Raafat and hospital staff for their care
keyhole surgery is a type of procedure in which small cuts are made to diagnose and treat conditions
It is recommended as the recovery time is generally faster than other types of surgery
Kelly has since received messages of support from celebrity friends such as TV presenter Julia Bradbury and Loose Women star Katie Piper
Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid added: “Sending you all the love in the world.”
Kelly celebrated her 40th year in television in 2024
with a special episode of her daytime chat show Lorraine
She began her journalism career on the East Kilbride News after turning down a university place to study English and Russian
She then joined BBC Scotland as a researcher in 1983
Kelly started in television as an on-screen reporter covering Scottish news and in 1990 she began her presenting career on Good Morning Britain

Lorraine Lillian Sheppard ("Lorrie") passed away peacefully
Ann Lorraine Sheppard (John Disano) and Brian James Sheppard
Barry Philp Sheppard and her brother Ronald Holsgrove
She will be remembered by her sister-in-law
Ontario and was raised by a single mother who ran a boarding house and served as cook and den mother to many Queen's University students (including Barry Sheppard)
Lorraine managed to put herself through university by working as a bank teller and a tour guide at Fort Henry
from Queen's (where she was proud of her role as editor of the Tricolor) and then a Masters of Social Work from Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfrid Laurier University)
Her intelligence and appetite for learning were apparent from the time she was recruited to lead a team of codebreakers at "Canada's Bletchley Park" in Ottawa during the cold war
through her 20 years of active participation in the Seniors Learning in Retirement (SLR) program at Western University
to one of her last (and favorite) trips when she attended summer school at Oxford University
qualities which stood her in good stead during her career at the Children's Psychiatric Research Institute in London
She was able to talk down a knife-wielding adolescent in the parking lot and
one day when the ceiling caved in and a large sink landed on her desk
simply said "it looks like the children on Crombie 2 are having another water fight"
non-judgmental and unfailingly positive - always seeing the good in everyone and the upside of every situation
She would tell our friends to "just call me Lorraine" and before you knew it
they would spill their tales of teenage angst to an always empathetic audience
Mom loved travel and had a real sense of adventure
including an overnight camel trip in the desert (at age 82)
The following year she broke her ankle on a trip to Brazil and didn't want to go home so she had the guide wrap a garbage bag around her cast to enable her to go white water rafting
She didn't love working out but went to the gym faithfully several times a week for over 40 years so that she could enjoy the après-exercise coffee and treats in the food court with her friends
she DID love art and music and thought nothing of getting in her car and driving by herself or with friends (including her fellow Jesse Cook groupies) to see plays and concerts throughout southwestern Ontario
She maintained lifelong friendships with Marian McPherson and Norma Connor who she met in grade 3 when
as members of the junior Red Cross “executive”
they contributed to the war effort by knitting “squares” and assembling ditty bags
our mother will be fondly remembered by Stewart and Olga Graham (Dad and Stew were born a day apart and our families grew up together too)
Jim Cochlin (another boardinghouse alumnus) and his wife Joan (both of whom acted as surrogate parents to Ann and Brian over many years at the summer camp they ran)
John and Heather Jarret and Helen Thomson (also of the Ottawa crowd)
the ‘western connection’: Dad’s former Waterloo Lutheran University student Ken Sime and his wife Marilyn and their families
and Mom’s London friends: Janine Smith (also connected through the university)
Mom’s neighbor and travel partner Joan Clarke and her sister Gloria
Ted and Gail Browne and Marg Tudor Roberts
and Jane as “wives of the ‘Four Squares’"
but their friendship took on a life of its own
We are grateful to Karen and the Self-Sufficient Seniors team who were a consistent presence in her final years
was a core member of Mom's inner circle and her visits were eagerly anticipated.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Carleton Lodge for their kindness and patience in caring for our mother over the past 2 and a half years
Joanne and countless other members of the nursing
activities and front desk teams cared for "Lorrie" with kindness
respect and dignity and made her feel special
A Celebration for the Life of Lorraine Sheppard will be held on Thursday

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Sharon Wilkinson
Sharon was born in Nanaimo on September 18
She was a hard worker and had the gifts of deep compassion and quiet strength which allowed her to excel in her career as a Registered Nurse
The last years of her career she spent as a nurse manager where she was well known for her ‘no nonsense’ approach
Though she had a tendency to be quiet and reserved
Sharon also had a sharp wit and wicked sense of humor
She loved to dance to anything by Marvin Gaye and you could count on her to never miss a Canucks game on TV
Some of her favorite memories were of her travels through Europe after nursing school with Julie
Her grandchildren were the joy of her life and she embraced her role of grandma with playful energy and unconditional love
Sharon will be remembered by her children Madeleine (Anthony) and Duncan (Deana); grandchildren Luca
Rosie and Nico; brothers Arnie and Larry; as well as many nieces and nephews
friends and colleagues; and her lifelong best friends Julie and Bruce Gregory
She is now reunited in heaven with her parents Ray and Annie and her brother Murray
A prayer service and private celebration of life will be announced at a later date

Everything was so organized and pertinent to what we needed
courteous and very helpful during our emotional and challenging time
They were so prompt on answering any questions and changing things
They were prepared and respected any religious decisions
The process was so seamless and made easy in such a high stress situation
In the past 2 years Springfield has helped us through the death of my Mother and my Father
Their response and help allowed us to focus on the remaining family rather than worrying about details of the funeral and all the notifications that are required upon a death
The atmosphere has been nothing but professional during times of grief
the staff coached me on the next steps and looked after filling in all the government forms that I needed to sign
which took a huge burden off my mind at the time
From the time I called to the completion of all the services
There was a sense of caring from each staff member
I was turning over my Mom to their care and I felt very comfortable with everyone
I felt heard and never felt pushed into any decision
I have always found the team at Springfield Funeral Home to be VERY caring
I have and will continue to recommend them to anyone who asks which funeral home would I suggest they use
No other funeral home I have dealt with even comes close to Springfield Funeral Home
I was made to feel as if I was the only one they had to serve
Everything that was arranged for us was perfect
Thank you for making this difficult time a little more acceptable via your staff’s obvious caring and respect
I liked the personal treatment given to my mother who is 97 years old
I found Springfield employees pleasant and sincere
was that the funeral home would help me get through the paperwork need at this time
Since this was my first experience (with a funeral home)
everything was above and beyond what I expected
Thank you to your team for your kindness to me at a very challenging time
You have now taken care of both of my parents with professionalism and care
Springfield Funeral Home is always professional
We appreciate that you have dedicated staff for all needs from planning the service to completing government paperwork
I am not sure there was anything you could have done to make a very intense emotional time less stressful
Although we hadn’t expected Ken to want a service
when he said we needed to have one for us not him
Your sincerity and compassion meant everything to us
your compassion and professionalism is truly amazing
super professional and caring as each guest arrived
Keep up the good work that you do as it is such an important service you provide
It is still the most difficult time in a person’s life
We appreciated the peace of mind that everything was being looked after
You provide a wonderful service for people going through a traumatic time
The kindness and professionalism shown by the staff at Springfield Funeral Home was exemplary
our beloved Lorraine passed away on March 30
and brothers Bill and Jim were born and raised on a farm in Treherne by parents Fred and Eva (both deceased)
she moved to Winnipeg where she met and then married her husband
Lorraine was working for Manitoba Medical up until their first child
and Lorraine was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed coffee dates and outings with girlfriends
and playing Atari games while the kids were at school
She greatly enjoyed the years with their camper and later at the Wendigo cabin
having drinks while playing cards or singing and playing guitar around the campfire with friends gave her so much joy
She was called ‘Mom’ by all her kid’s friends
Mike and Lorraine moved to Cook’s Creek where they enjoyed many years before returning to Winnipeg in 2001
Their farm was her paradise and her never-ending yard work
vegetable and flower gardens kept her very busy
Only grandchild Devin ‘Ryan’ was the light of her life and playing kickball and board games during his sleepovers at the farm were favorite pastimes
Once back in Winnipeg and with a much-downsized workload Lorraine was able to engross herself with reading books and watching movies while in her older age
she often dodged the midday hot summer sun
Lorraine had COPD which she managed well for many years
but the last few months were most difficult and she struggled more often with different aspects of her condition
She was comforted in her last days that she was able to have recently seen several out-of-town family members
and met and held her first great-grandniece
We hope that Lori found greener grass and weedless dirt on the other side and that her and Lucy are working away getting dirt stuck under their nails while looking for the monarch caterpillars that she was so passionate about
Cremation will take place and a private gathering will be held at the family home at a later date
those who wish may donate to the Manitoba Lung Association in her memory

Attending her first NHL game at the age of 94 to watch her grandson
Grandma Loraine walked away from a Lightning win with a special memories
Photos courtesy of Darren Raddysh
Darren Raddysh’s 94-year-old maternal grandmother stole the show – and plenty of hearts – at a recent Tampa Bay Lightning home game
It’s hard to deny that the true star of the Lightning’s 2-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on March 17 was Grandma Lorraine herself
was a jumbotron staple throughout the evening
smiling and dancing while cheering on her grandson
“It was definitely awesome,” Raddysh told NHLPA.com
“My grandparents didn’t really get to come watch my brother and me play hockey – my grandmother took care of my grandfather who was sick most of our childhood
she had a little more time – she got sick at one point and couldn’t travel – so coming to Tampa to watch us play was one of her dreams
“I took her down to the ice and we took a photo on the bench
My aunt and uncle who were in Orlando at the time – she had flown to see them – they took her to Thunder Alley [Amalie Arena's main entrance plaza] and she saw my picture which is wrapped on one of the polls
She got to do some shopping and get the whole experience.”
The two spoke on the phone the day after to recap the experience
“She called me the next day and told me it was the best night of her life.”
It was an equally special experience for the 29-year-old Raddysh
who grew up in southwestern Ontario alongside his younger brother
now a forward with the Washington Capitals
it might just top his list of most treasured hockey moments
“Like I said to my teammates after the game
it’s probably the most memorable game I have had playing in the NHL,” said the undrafted defenceman
Raddysh was surprised by how much attention his grandmother received on social media
“I was building stuff in my house – I was redoing my closet – and I put my phone for about two hours
I couldn’t believe it was going to get that big
I’m glad she got the spotlight a little bit
She’s a legend in our family and I am glad people got to see that.”
The experience brought back recollections of times he spent with his grandmother and grandfather long before his NHL dream became a reality
Visits to his grandparents’ home gave Raddysh a window into his mother’s childhood days
“My grandparents hosted almost every function for each holiday
Their house was filled with memories that I hadn’t seen because I wasn’t born yet
going there and seeing photos of my mom and her sisters growing up was amazing.”
who played alongside his younger brother for two seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters – a team that also included future NHL superstar Connor McDavid – would love to see Grandma Lorraine in the stands for another Lightning home game
so she was a good luck charm,” said the blueliner
who signed a two-year contract extension with the Lightning
“I guess the ultimate game for her to see would be a playoff game with me and my brother facing off against each other.”
Raddysh is grateful his grandmother got to see him play on NHL ice – and in the process
“It means a lot to my family and to her to have that experience
From using a Steven Stamkos stick in his minor hockey league days to now playing alongside the Tampa Bay Lightning captain
Darren Raddysh is living out his NHL dream
This season’s finalists include defending TLA recipient
Victor Hedman named as the captain of Tre Kronor for the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament
