Picture by Sports Authority of IndiaBy Utathya NagIndian cyclist Esow Alben won the bronze medal in the elite men’s keirin event at the Finale Bahnen-Tournee 2023 cycling competition in Dudenhofen, Germany. The Finale Bahnen-Tournee is a UCI Class 1 event.
The 22-year-old Esow Elben, who became the first Indian to win a cycling world championship medal after clinching a silver at the 2018 edition, finished behind Germany’s Marc Jurczyk and France’s Sebastien Vigier - both world championships medallists.
Sebastien Vigier was also part of the French team which won the Team sprint cycling bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Esow Alben’s campaign in the men’s sprint event in Dudenhofen, however, wasn’t as successful. The cyclist from the Andaman and Nicobar islands finished 24th among 27 competitors in the event.
Last year, Esow Alben became the first cyclist from India to participate in the UCI Champions League.
Esow’s compatriot Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam, meanwhile, finished 10th in the men’s sprint event at the Germany meet.

As promised, Opel developed an all-electric rally car, the Opel Corsa-e Rally (based on the production Opel Corsa-e/Vauxhall Corsa-e)
which will be used in all-new ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup
The first two development vehicles currently are undergoing durability testing at Dudenhofen Test Centre in Germany
as Opel would like to be ready within a few months
After the development program is completed
Opel will build a reference car and start working on 20 units for the 2020/21 season starting on December 15
2020 (15 to be available for customer teams in summer 2020 for "significantly" less than €50,000 (£46,000) (net))
"The Corsa-e Rally has the same battery as the production car
The 50kWh energy storage capacity enables a range of 337km according to WLTP
In order to optimise the range for rallying
the battery offers three modes: in “competition mode”
full power and maximum torque are available
so the “rain mode” gives a torque curve adapted to slippery surfaces
Teams will use the energy-saving “eco mode” between stages and for driving to service."
Both cars are covering as many kilometres as possible
in order to gather the maximum amount of data at an early stage
There is no experience of an electric rally car that we could turn to
so initially we had to rely on calculations and simulations
These are being gradually replaced with real data
Other focuses are on loads and temperature management of the battery under rally conditions
I am pleased to report that our programme is going smoothly.”
it is important that the performance remains constant and accessible under all conditions
The equipment should guarantee equal opportunity for all participants
We also decided that the Corsa-e Rally should match and exceed the high standards of its petrol-engine predecessor
the 260Nm of torque is much higher than the ADAM Cup’s
and the weight distribution is also very good
which is extremely important for an agile competition car
Now we need to find the most balanced chassis setup
so in January we will start simulating some real rally stages.”
The comprehensive development programme of the Opel Corsa-e Rally for the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup is proceeding at full speed
Two examples of the battery-electric rally car are currently undergoing durability testing at the Dudenhofen Test Centre
“Both cars are covering as many kilometres as possible
The engineers at Opel Motorsport will turn to the speed of the 100kW (136hp) electric rally car in the second phase of development
The equipment should guarantee equal opportunity for all participants”
“We also decided that the Corsa-e Rally should match and exceed the high standards of its petrol-engine predecessor
As soon as development of the Corsa-e Rally has been completed
a reference car will be built that will also serve as the template for customer vehicles
Around 20 examples are expected to be built for the 2020/21 season
up to 15 will be delivered to customer teams in the summer – in time for the first test event in July
Ideal setup: drive modes for rally stages and road sections
The Corsa-e Rally has the same battery as the production car
Teams will use the energy-saving “eco mode” between stages and for driving to service
Orders for the Corsa-e Rally can be placed now
entries for the 2020/21 ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup open on December 15

Luton – Vauxhall reports today that sister brand Opel is currently conducting durability tests for its Corsa e-Rally Cup
“Both cars are covering as many miles as possible
Other focuses are on loads and temperature management of the battery
“We also decided that the Corsa-e Rally should match or even exceed the high standards of its petrol-engine predecessor
up to 15 will be delivered to customers in the summer – in time for the first test event in July
The 50kWh energy storage capacity enables a range of 209 miles according to WLTP
full power and maximum torque are available for at least 60km
entries for the 2020/21 ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup open on 15th December 2019

General Motors is rationalising its automotive testing facilities
sparking industry insiders to suggest that it could be on the brink of selling the Millbrook automotive proving ground in Bedfordshire
GM is to focus more of its testing activities at its Vauxhall/Opel Dudenhofen facility in Germany
The carmaker has spent €28.5 million upgrading Dudenhofen
including the construction of a high-speed testing circuit and the full electrification of all control and measurement sensor technology
Opel/Vauxhall vice-president of engineering
said: “The opening of the high-speed circuit is a milestone
This is a clear sign of our commitment to the long-term future of our development facilities in Germany
The extensions are a significant contribution to further increasing the quality of our products
and bringing affordable innovations to our customers fast.”
An industry source said that GM had been considering its options for Millbrook since the start of the year and that discussions were now “well down the line”
The sale could be completed in the next few weeks
Millbrook would be expected to continue carrying out testing work on behalf of GM
while looking to win new business from other clients
The 700-acre Bedfordshire site is widely viewed as one of Europe’s most advanced centres for the development and demonstration of land vehicles
from motorcycles and passenger cars to heavy commercial
It features a range of test tracks including a high-speed circuit
The facility also boasts a host of laboratories for activities such as crash testing
emissions monitoring and the replication of harsh environmental conditions
Millbrook has won contracts totalling more than 50% of its activities from third-party organisations outside the GM group
It has won business from other carmakers including Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and from central government
testing prototype buses for Transport for London and patrol vehicles for the Ministry of Defence
Industry insiders have suggested that JLR could emerge as a potential buyer for Millbrook to enable the carmaker to meet testing requirements for a host of planned models over the next two years
any such deal would result in some duplication of facilities
JLR has its own automotive proving facilities at Gaydon in the West Midlands
Millbrook declined to comment on what it said was “speculation”

this morning Nici Walde got out of her velomobile at the Opel Test Center Rodgau-Dudenhofen – exhausted but overjoyed
she rode exactly 1,088 kilometres in her recumbent bicycle with full fairing and set a new women’s HPV world record (Human Powered Vehicles e.V.)
No other woman has ever covered a greater distance powered solely by her own physical strength in this time span
Nici already beat the previous women’s record of 1,012 kilometres in just under 22 hours
To break the women’s 24-hour world record was my goal
It’s too bad it rained – that got in the way of achieving even more,” said Nici Walde at the finish line
“But I know one thing: This fantastic endeavour would not have been possible without Opel and their great support.”
“What Nici Walde did yesterday and today is more than extraordinary
This achievement is unique,” said Johan Willems
"We at Opel have done our best to support this ambitious and exceptional athlete
we were quite sure that she would be successful
This is also made very clear by our motto #WeBelieve."
but also numerous Opel employees and fans supported Nici Walde on site during her extreme ride
The most successful bobsleigh pilot at the Winter Olympics
André Lange and two-time Olympic quadruple scull champion
both kept their fingers crossed for Nici Walde
Opel brand ambassador and winner of the 24-hour races at Le Mans and the Nürburgring Joachim “Jockel” Winkelhock was also on site
Because they all know what it means to dare to attempt the almost impossible while always believing in yourself
– 24 hours later the new world record is set
After weeks of planning and countless rounds of preparation on the road and at the Opel Test Center
the "New 24-hour HPV World Record" endeavour entered the decisive phase on Friday
Nici Walde and the Opel representatives presented the meticulous preparations that were necessary on all sides to turn the record attempt into a new world record
On Saturday morning the time had come: tension at the Opel Test Center was palpable before the starting signal
– and Nici Walde took off with her 257-centimetre long
64-centimetre wide and 88-centimetre high velomobile
The recumbent bicycle with full fairing weighs just 14 kilogrammes and was developed by her partner Daniel Fenn
The 44-year-old athlete covered lap after lap on the 4.8-kilometre long high-speed track in weather conditions with temperatures that sometimes topped 30 degrees Celsius during midday and afternoon hours and included intermittent torrential rain
But it became particularly strenuous for Nici Walde as the sun set and the ride through the night began
Because staying awake and constantly maintaining total concentration is even more difficult in these hours
The loud cheering during the last laps on Sunday morning motivated Nici to give it everything she had
When rower Karl Schulze finally waved the flag at the finish line
Nici Walde had covered a total of 1,088 kilometres in 24 hours and surpassed the previous record for women by 76 kilometres
The sometimes adverse weather conditions kept the men’s record of 1,219 kilometres out of reach
the extreme athlete completed 227 laps on the high-speed track at the Opel Test Center
reaching top speeds of up to 56 km/h with her own physical strength – a top performance
Nici Walde is now officially not only in possession of the 12-hour but also the 24-hour HPV world record
And the Opel high-speed circuit in Rodgau-Dudenhofen is once again a world record track after numerous records in the past set both with and without engines

the world's first series-produced pure-electric rally car
has begun a testing programme at the Dudenhofen Test Centre in Germany
with two examples taking to the track for durability runs
"These are being gradually replaced with real data
The Corsa-e Rally uses the same 134bhp, 260Nm electric motor and front-wheel-drive setup as its roadgoing sibling (and the Vauxhall Corsa-e model for the UK)
The competition version is differentiated by its Torsen front differential
It also features three driving modes: Competition gives maximum power for 60km (37 miles) and is intended for use when the car is tackling a timed stage
while Rain modifies the car's torque curve for better grip on wet surfaces
Eco saves power while driving on road sections between competitive stages
Schrott said: "The centre of gravity is low
which is extremely important for an agile competition car."
The electric Corsa rally car is set to cost from £46,000 and is available from Opel Motorsport (the competition arm of Vauxhall's sister brand) for entry into the Opel ADAC e-Rally Cup in Germany
This is intended as a platform for young drivers to get experience and feed into higher-level motorsport
including the European Junior Rally Championship
the single-make cup will feature up to 15 Corsa-e Rally cars and will initially be part of the German Rally Championship
It replaces the Opel Rally Cup of previous seasons
which featured a rally version of the now-defunct Opel Adam hatchback

Opel announced another step in its export offensive - the return to Japan next year - as the company intends to achieve at least 10% of sales outside Europe by mid-2020
The move is possible thanks to PSA Group
which invests a lot to restore brand splendor
Corsa-e might not be the only plug-in model
"Opel will continue its ongoing export offensive by returning to the important Japanese market
the brand with the Blitz logo will launch three models in a first step: the bestselling Corsa
the multifunctional Combo Life and the Grandland X compact SUV
"In Japan Opel will be part of the National Sales Organization of Groupe PSA and will be able to leverage the on-site infrastructure and expertise of the group
This greatly facilitates the return to this market
the Groupe PSA is represented in Japan with the Peugeot
Citroën and DS Automobiles brands and sold more than 15,600 vehicles in 2019
The launch of the Opel brand will help Groupe PSA expand its offering in Japan and attract new customers
All the more so as Japanese customers will also benefit from Opel’s electrification offensive: They will have the choice between combustion engines and an electrified drive
because the Corsa1 will also come in a purely electric version
while the Grandland X will also be available as a plug-in hybrid."
“The Japanese car market is one of the largest in the world
Opel enjoys an excellent reputation there as a German brand
our return to Japan is a very important step to significantly increase our profitable exports – as we promised in the PACE
Opel goes global – our comeback in Japan is further proof of this,"
the brand will build a dealer network in the major cities of the country
the Opel network will be represented in over 80 percent of the import market area
the focus in Japan will be on profitable growth and satisfied customers
A comprehensive export offensive is one pillar of the Opel / Vauxhall strategic plan PACE
markets outside Europe will be responsible for more than ten percent of Opel's sales volume
the brand is strengthening its presence in export markets in Asia
and will enter more than 20 new export markets by 2022
Recent examples include the comeback in Russia or the market entry in Colombia and Ecuador."

Pete Mitchell came out the eventual winner after beating John Paul in the final with a strong late run from behind
Lewis Oliva beat Stefan Botticher for bronze medal position
Part of the challenge of the series is to test the riders’ ability to adapt their racing styles and tactics to a different track every day
The ability to do this provides them with these tools at higher level competition so they can race effectively on different tracks and against different competition
Kian Emadi qualified in first position in 10.75 and rode well all day to take the win
Day three finished off the series at the Dudenhofen track
which has been the riders’ training base for the previous week
Kian Emadi again qualified quickest in 10.72
but failed to back this up during the sprint competition
having shown strong form all week finally took top spot on the podium
making it all the way to the final and beating Lewis Oliva into silver medal position with a precise well executed ride
Alexander Reinalt beat Pete Mitchell into bronze medal spot
All in all a solid two week racing block interspersed with challenging racing for the Olympic Academy group
providing them with a sound base as they move towards the under-23 European Championships in Anadia
The famous 333m concrete track was built by the German federation in their preparation for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow
The Cottbus sport school which is based there is the perfect training venue with quality gym facilities and a physically and tactically challenging track
The week finished with the two day Sprinter Cup competition (Sprint - Saturday
Keirin Sunday) featuring many of the top German riders
The Great Britain Academy athletes squeezed into the top 10 qualification positions in the sprint competition behind the on form German riders who were using the event for U23 European and 2012/2013 National team selection
the Great Britain riders backed their qualifications up with aggressive and positive riding throughout the day
Week two of the Sprint Academy race series was based in Dudenhofen near Frankfurt
