UPDATE: Harris calls Trump ‘unstable’ after former chief of staff warns that Trump wanted generals like Hitler’s WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump’s longest-serving chief of staff is warning that the Republican presidential nominee meets the definition of a fascist and that while in office Trump suggested that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler “did some good things.” the retired Marine general who worked for Trump in the White House from 2017 to 2019 came in interviews with both The New York Times and The Atlantic They build on a growing series of warnings from former top Trump officials as the election enters its final weeks WATCH: Trump’s ramped-up rhetoric raises new concerns about violence and authoritarianism Kelly has long been critical of Trump and previously accused him of calling veterans killed in combat “suckers” and “losers.” Still his new warnings came just two weeks before Election Day as Trump seeks a second term vowing to dramatically expand his use of the military at home and suggesting he would use force to go after Americans he considers “enemies from within.” Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying “nothing (Hitler) did was good,” but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again Kelly recalled that when Trump raised the idea of needing “German generals,” Kelly would ask if he meant “Bismarck’s generals,” referring to Otto von Bismarck the former chancellor of the German Reich who oversaw the unification of Germany “Surely you can’t mean Hitler’s generals,” Kelly recalled asking Trump WATCH: Trump plans to massively expand executive power if elected, report says Trump’s campaign denied these stories on Tuesday arguing Kelly has “beclowned himself with these debunked stories he has fabricated.” Polls show the race is his interview with The Times that Trump met the definition of a fascist including that fascism was “a far-right authoritarian ultranationalist political ideology and movement characterized by a dictator approach to government,” Kelly told The Times “I think he’d love to be just like he was in business — he could tell people to do things and they would do it and not really bother too much about whether what the legalities were and whatnot.” Kelly is not the first former top Trump administration official to cast the former president as a threat who served as Trump’s chairman of the Festival and has drawn strong Oscar buzz but its satirical approach to a story of Nazi Germany has also turned some critics off Perhaps that’s no surprise given the way the film’s plot mixes two combustible ingredients: the Holocaust and childhood. The adaptation of the 2004 novel Caging Skies is about Jojo (played by Roman Griffin Davis) a 10-year-old member of a Nazi organization for preteens called the Jungvolk who realizes his mother (Scarlett Johansson) has been letting a Jewish girl named Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie) hide out in their home Nazi youth groups like the one Jojo joins were very real some members were fiercely dedicated to Hitler while others would fit Elsa’s description of Jojo as “a 10-year-old kid who likes dressing up in a funny uniform and wants to be part of a club.” even nearly a century after these groups were first established the questions raised by their existence — about the role of children in the history of hate and the way hate affects those children — remain powerfully relevant That children would be involved in the Nazi regime was clear from the beginning. As Adolf Hitler put it at the annual Nazi party rally in 1935 “He alone who owns the youth gains the future.” (This quote has also been paraphrased as “Whoever has the youth has the future.”) The development of youth organizations meant to groom the future leaders of his Nazi Party dated back to the establishment of the party in the early 1920s when all boys and girls in Nazi Germany were required by law to join a Nazi youth group All boys over 10 years old joined the Jungvolk (meaning “Young People”) and then graduated to the Hitler Youth when they turned 14 girls joined the Jungmädel (“Young Girls”) and then graduated to Bund Deutscher Mädel (the “League of German Girls” or BDM for short) about 100,000 girls and boys were members of all the organizations combined Youths who were discovered not to have joined could be sent to “re-education” camps or their parents were fined and imprisoned people who would take over as grown-ups and continue the ideology of the Third Reich,” says historian Michael Kater author of Hitler Youth and Culture in Nazi Germany “History is fed to boys as a story of the great German destiny,” TIME described in a July 1941 report on the inner workings of youth organizations in Nazi Germany “Mathematics is taught in terms of bullet trajectories the little leader-geniuses are searched for the qualities every German warrior must have: punctuality so that his complete case history of character development will be available for the future use of Army psychologists.” Eleven-year-old boys in the Hitler Youth organization learning how to fire a rifle.Keystone—Getty ImagesBut while the adults involved knew that they were grooming a new generation of Nazis, many of the children would later recall the period in more innocent terms, even as their fun was in the service of hateful indoctrination. A July 8, 1935, TIME article reported that 9 million “apple-cheeked wondering children” had participated in Summer Solstice Festivals through the Hitler Youth at which they were told by Hermann Göring that Adolf Hitler was performing God’s miracles students in Germany were required to read material like the 1938 essay Comradeship which presented camping with the Hitler Youth as a time of “wonderfully thrilling stories” and communing with nature In his 1985 memoir, another former member described the program in its pre-war days as similar to Boy Scouts He fondly recalled activities like the “test of courage” in which members were required to jump from a high diving board “There were some stinging belly flops,” he wrote “but the pain was worth it when our Fähnleinführer the 15-year-old leader of Fähnlein (literally “little flag”) handed us the coveted dagger with its inscription Blood and Honor From that moment on we were fully accepted.” Heck also reveled in the chance to get out of the house and socialize with people his own age “Far from being forced to enter the ranks of the Jungvolk I could barely contain my impatience and was filled with ‘duties’ that seemed sheer pleasure.” Meanwhile, girls collected tin foil and warm clothes for soldiers, and received lessons on farming gymnastics and running — activities that might sound pleasant enough but were designed to keep their bodies and their homes in good physical shape so that they could attract a mate and raise children in the Nazi ideology participation in the Hitler Youth was also seen as a leg up in society as children from all economic backgrounds wore the same uniforms Some members of Hitler Youth organizations who went on to fame after World War II have cited these more innocent attractions as central to their memories of participation in such a group or said they only joined because they had to A 1938 photo of Hitler Youth members looking on as Jewish people were forced to scrub the streets in Vienna, Austria.Universal History Archive/Universal Images Group—Getty ImagesBut, especially after World War II officially began in 1939 being a member of a Hitler Youth organization was not about seemingly innocent camping trips and the bonds of friendship Members of Hitler Youth groups aided storm troopers in atrocities carried out by the Nazi regime according to Kater — from ordering Jewish people in Vienna to clean the pavement with toothbrushes or their own hands to raiding synagogues and destroying sacred Hebrew scrolls and texts Members of the girls’ groups served in administrative positions in Nazi offices farm laborers or munitions-factory workers In a 1943 TIME article on life in Nazi Germany one British Army chaplain who had been a prisoner of war gave the Gestapo and the Hitler Youth shared credit for the situation: “Hitler has made the youth and the youth are ruling Germany.” Some members of these organizations were particularly infamous. The Auschwitz guard Irma Grese who was notorious for setting a pack of attack dogs on her inmates began that work as a teenage member of a youth organization A British Army court sentenced her to death by hanging in the fall of 1945 the Nazi German police force — a belated disclosure that many saw as hypocritical Hans and Sophie Scholl famously turned against their Hitler Youth roots by distributing anti-Nazi pamphlets.ADN Zentralbild—Getty Images)At the same time despite the mandatory nature of participation the history of Nazi youth organizations does contain examples of resistance young enough that they “were reared under Hitler’s National Socialism supposedly imbued with its doctrines.” “We are your bad conscience,” said one of the leaflets “Everyone wants to exonerate himself from his share of the blame … But it cannot be done: everyone is guilty TIME reported that the pamphlet that got them discovered said: “The eyes of even the most stupid Germans these eyes have been opened by the terrible blood bath in which Hitler and his confederates are trying to drown all Europe in the name of the freedom of the German nation Germany’s name will remain forever dishonored if German youth does not at last rise up avenge and destroy its tormentors and help in the building of a new spirit in Europe It expects from us in 1943 the breaking of the National Socialist terror.” The end of the Nazi regime would not come for another two years Write to Olivia B. As he ran for reelection in 2020, Trump said he didn’t know much about QAnon, the convoluted conspiracy that alleges Democrats are involved in a satanic pedophilia ring and casts Trump as the nation’s savior — even as he retweeted accounts promoting the conspiracy “I know nothing about it,” he said during an NBC town hall “I don’t know that and neither do you,” he said which was part of a desperate bid to keep Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden “I don’t know who the Proud Boys are," Trump told reporters after instructing the group, during a presidential debate you'll have to give me a definition ‘cause I don’t really know who they are,” Trump said of the group Trump has also suggested he was unaware of some of the most consequential periods of American history Greg Abbott to define the post-Civil War era known as Reconstruction as he boasted about his growing popularity with Hispanic voters and Republican wins along the border “They say the first time since Reconstruction That means the Civil War," Trump told the audience You said I’m the first one to win all of these towns since Reconstruction.' He said Reconstruction: since the Civil War.’ That’s a long time ago Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said Trump “has been very clear that he’s talking about criminals and terrorists who have crossed the border under Joe Biden’s watch the United States will return to a secure border and a system that places the safety and security of Americans first." The former president's claims about Hitler are particularly notable given his upbringing in New York home to one of the nation's largest Jewish populations Trump has also participated in Holocaust memorial events. He spoke at a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol hosted by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2017, where he denounced Holocaust deniers as accomplices to “horrible evil." And he paid a brief visit to Yad Vashem where he called the Nazi extermination of 6 million Jews “the most savage crime against God and his children.” Trump's insistence that he has not read “Mein Kampf” — an assertion he also made at an Iowa rally last week — evoked a different Hitler book he once allegedly had in his possession Journalist Marie Brenner reported in Vanity Fair magazine in 1990 that Trump’s ex-wife “from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches ‘My New Order,’ which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed.” “it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of ‘Mein Kampf,’ and he’s a Jew.” Davis confirmed to Brenner that he had indeed given Trump ”a book about Hitler,” but it was “My New Order “I thought he would find it interesting,” Davis said Trump returned to this subject.," Brenner wrote Knowing basic American history is important for a president said Princeton University professor Julian Zelizer but certainly you want a president with a feel for some of the basic parts of American history that Reconstruction was a "a formative moment for civil rights and race relations." “All great cultures of the past perished only because the originally creative race died out from blood poisoning.” Trump told Hewitt his message was “very different” and he had “zero” racist intent “They say that he said something about blood What I’m saying when I talk about people coming into our country is they are destroying our country.” he repeated “poisoning” references eight times Among those references: “They are poisoning our country They are poisoning the blood of our country They’re coming from mental institutions and insane asylums rewritten or redistributed without permission The only irritating part about going over my thoughts of this week’s Preacher is having to address the opening “Hilter” begins with a look at Hitler’s life outside of Hell I wasn’t a fan of involving Hitler in this series as I don’t know what it accomplishes outside the initial shock humor of this particular depiction Calling back to the character this late in the season was inevitable since Noah Taylor’s been a credited cast member all season but it’s just a reminder that I’m fine not worrying about the story of him and Eugene “Hitler” has a lot of other things going on that I was quite the fan of and I’m a big fan of how The Grail and Angelville have now collided we are at a point where two antagonistic forces are present and allowing for the story to start surging forward It’s even more interesting that this particular path does not rely on these characters getting into violent confrontations (aside from the current relationship between Tulip and Featherstone) everyone apart from Gran’ma Marie is stuck in something of a stalemate With Starr in need of a way to stop the Allfather he’s made his way to Angelville and negotiates a deal with Marie Every sort of awkward exchange that I would expect with Starr having to deal with these people takes place which easily makes this some of the more entertaining stuff to come out of Angelville Given that season three has had a rough go of making this location the sort of threat I’ve been wanting to see it as settling for solid humor (which can help build tension and suspense) is what I’m happy to count on at this point Making this turn of events all the better is placing Tulip and Featherstone in another room and having them go at it verbally and physically There may be something to say for the show making excuses to involve Tulip by way of a side quest but it has lead to great material this week The scenes finding her matched against Featherstone are fun placing her in an undercover scenario setup is great and I’m looking forward to seeing this Osaka mission play out next this finds the character in a better and more entertaining position Cassidy is having a great time as a free-living vampire Cassidy has been made to feel as if he’s right at home and doing the right thing Even with Hoover and a gang of vampire-hunting Catholics getting the drop on them only to further find himself under the spell of his new lover and so Eccarius is really a murderous vampire that feeds on his followers in multiple ways but I’m fascinated by this external story taking place in his universe Whether or not Cassidy can figure things out on his own Jesse gets plenty to work with this week as well although he’s more support to Starr and Marie as she provides more understanding about the relationship she shares with her grandson There’s a viciousness to what we are seeing with her handling of Jesse but also clearly evident compassion that complicates things Jesse will have to get Genesis back eventually but we still get to wait in anticipation over what sort of comeuppance Marie will finally get which will presumably challenge Jesse’s take on his family Starr is smart enough to have found a way to get to Jesse – his word as Jesse is now in a position to get back the missing piece of soul but will be obligated not to make Starr kill himself (or whatever else) It’s all a good build up to the episode’s cliffhanger ending where the Allfather is ready to see Jesse be handled Add to that T.C.’s reveal to Marie that Genesis is somehow in play and we have a season that’s really cooking up some exciting final few episodes “Hilter” is a terrible title for this week’s episode The episode gets to have a lot of fun with the real lead characters and the raising stakes involved between them I’ve noted my irritation with the lack of terror that should come from Angelville but I’m happy with where we are at this point The show may not always win me over with its direction for plotting out a season-long story That’s especially the case when you have an episode as fun as this You may use these HTML tags and attributes:

<del datetime=""> <q Early indications confirm that Trump’s assembled cabinet will quickly undo basic tenets of our democracy that we have taken for granted up to now Ignorance-laden motivations always have unsustainable outcomes I was not making a political statement All I wanted was one safe haven away from all of the Hubbub that is going on in the world Openculture usually offers more artistic news so all I wanted was for things to go before the election began Sorry you took my comments so personally I didn’t intend for them to come off that way I believe the country has elected a very dangerous authoritarian bully and that many people will suffer for it The evidence is so overwhelming and has been on display for so long that I feel no need to repeat any of it should unequivocally and without reservation The stakes are basic human rights and civil liberties That said–and I also say this respectfully–if you do not like this article and whoever else misconstrued my statements I am not aligned with any party and am non-partisan I did not argue or attack as Jan said and I did not make the article out to what I wanted to believe it to be as Haley suggested I also do not have a political alignment as Jan said I only made a suggestion that if you don’t want to lose readers stop with the political articles no matter who it is for or against As for your need to push your personal agenda onto others; I also heard the same response from Republicans about Obama I think you’ve made it clear that you’re just looking out for us I’ll add to my statement and then say no more: The values that this site regularly champions–free speech and free inquiry and humanistic endeavor–are under threat whether you perceive that to be the case or no That is of great interest to our readers Our focus on current affairs and historical parallels is not about a “personal agenda.” A very interesting historical parallel Thank you for the artfully written piece Our country’s democratic ideals are in danger of being destroyed by the Trump regime I’m actively seeking media outlets that understand this fact Dan and Open Culture for providing this much needed voice to counteract mainstream media’s pathetic attempt to normalize anything associated with Trump Historical comparisons with an n of 1 aren’t particularly useful or interesting I just get tired of seeing all of the doom and gloom in the news Didn’t you see that Stephen Hawking gave us 1000 years before the world ends Well it didn’t end when we elected the first black president and it won’t end now I just wish the media would bring us together instead of driving us apart I also have a problem with your use of the word rhetoric What is reported about our president elect is often based on his own words So a journalist reporting on the words someone is using is not using rhetoric He was recorded talking about grabbing women by the pussy No one made him say that and the media wasn’t twisting his words or taking it out of context to persuade people of a certain viewpoint they simply reported his words am sick of hearing about all this political bs but I think it is important that we do listen and pay attention The nation has elected someone who has called for a ban of all people of a particular religion Somehow many feel we can’t put any restrictions on guns (even background checks) because people yell about the right to bear arms being in the constitution yet a large portion of the population backed a man saying he’d like to ban Muslims from entering the country and yet we have freedom of religion in that very same document Certainly one could argue that immigrants are not yet citizens so therefore the constitution doesn’t apply to them but I guess its the principle of the thing Is there any guarantee that a Christian will automatically be a good future citizen yet a Muslim will not I think this is an incredibly important time in our country We have a president elect whose victory was openly supported by the KKK I think that no matter which side of the aisle you are on you should be for basic human rights and decency I think many average citizens standing idly by is what allows many of these horrible situations Hitler wasn’t the last example of ethnic cleansing and sadly I’m sure there will be more examples in the future These two were less than ideal but I think you missed an opportunity by not voting I hope that regardless of your thoughts on voting if you see injustice committed against your fellow man you will speak out This is something we all need to commit to Netanyahu is now actually looking forward to working with Mr Thank you for your polite and thoughtful response I guess the best that we can do is to try and make a positive impact on the world around us the best way that we think we can This is my ultimate goal each morning when I wake up Apolitical apathy is precisely why no one should be feeling complacent or safe about our system of “checks and balances.” We are one Supreme Court justice away from no more checks and balances It’s a call for an apathetic population to “Pay attention I take it that civic engagement in the government isn’t a priority for you It amazes me that no one reading this article recalls a recent politician who also had the ability to sway crowds to his will with a meteoric rise from seemingly nowhere This politician ran for office under the vague notion of change and ideas like exhorting a mandatory service program as well organized and well funded as the armed forces This person was an associate of far left radicals once on the fbi’s most wanted list for domestic terrorism tried to nominate radicals to prominent political posts and when unable to do that created posts which did not need top be confirmed despite the authority bestowed on them the press did all they could to aid his campaign conspiring together on their narrative and withholding evidence of unpopular views There’s a vast difference between the hate speech/rhetoric of an authoritarian tyrant and the persuasive oration of a transformative leader Not surprising that the newspaper which won a Pulitzer Prize for Walter Duranty’s reporting on how wonderfully things were going in Stalin’s USSR in the 1930’s would serve as an early apologist for Hitler XHTML: You can use these tags: <abbr Feared German leader’s final days spent in darkness of the Fuhrerbunker as a ‘palsied prematurely aged old man in a soup-stained uniform’ reduced to shrieking ‘nonsensical orders to half-exterminated armies’ I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice With the Western Allies days away from retaking Europe, Poland in the hands of the advancing Red Army and Berlin under relentless siege the Fuhrer was forced to concede his vision of founding a new empire to last a thousand years lay in tatters his hope of global conquest for the greater glory of the Teutonic “master race” doomed to end in failure He shot himself through the right temple with a 7.65mm Walther PP pistol biting down on a cyanide capsule as he did so to ensure there would be no question of his survival Hitler, Braun, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels plus members of the party’s trusted inner circle and staff had taken up residence in the Fuhrerbunker on 16 January as the once-mighty German army found itself pushed to the verge of collapse after six years of devastating conflict Each subsequent day had brought more news of steady British and American progress into Nazi-occupied territory from the west and the unstoppable march of Soviet troops to the east the Russians had arrived to commence the Battle of Berlin bringing 2.5 million men and 6,525 tanks to the doorstep of the world’s third-largest city on three fronts commanded in turn by marshals Georgy Zhukov The exhausted Nazis were outnumbered and outgunned five-to-one with little serious hope of defending the capital reliant on flimsy barricades thrown up in desperation to fend off invasion “It would be much better to have me shot,” remarked General Helmuch Weidling when he was tasked with mounting a last stand to save Berlin Adolf Hitler made his final appearance above ground as he emerged from the sanctuary that had become his prison to hand out the Iron Cross to members of the Hitler Youth among the devastated remains of what had been the Chancellery’s garden It was his 56th birthday and the last time he would feel the brush of sunlight against his cheek The occasion was marked by Russian soldiers firing on Hermannplatz and killing a number of people queueing outside the Karstadt department store “Through the fire-blackened ruins the scent of lilac rose in waves out of derelict gardens whose owners had fled or died,” Douglas Botting wrote of that spring in In the Ruins of the Reich (1985) The stumps of trees amputated by the bombing were bursting with green leaf With only the hammering of saturation bombing by the Allies to listen out for Hitler had suffered a total nervous breakdown on 22 April after becoming certain of defeat when he learned that Waffen-SS general Felix Steiner had disobeyed a direct order Steiner’s detachment had been instructed to attack Zhukov’s forces encircling the city from the north while the German Ninth Army under Theodor Busse approached from the south in a pincer movement Steiner had baulked at so unrealistic a command anticipating the massacre of his already-depleted forces “Hitler had been incarcerated in the bunker for over three months and his grasp on reality was fading fast,” writes Botting of the Fuhrer’s feverish state of mind prematurely aged old man in a soup-stained uniform living deep under the ground of the Reich Chancellery gardens continued to demand absolute obedience and fanatical resistance [and] continued to shriek nonsensical orders to non-existent or half-exterminated armies.” Ranting tearfully and admitting the war was lost for the first time later that same afternoon on the optimum means of committing suicide who recommended pistol-and-poison as the only truly foolproof method When Luftwaffe supreme commander Hermann Goering heard of Hitler’s outburst from Berchtesgaden he dispatched a telegram asking him to step down in accordance with a 1941 decree naming Goering his successor Persuaded by his secretary Martin Bormann that the Reichsmarschall intended a coup arrested by the SS and threatened with execution Field Marshal Robert Ritter von Greim was summoned from Munich to replace him sending gifts of coffee and tinned food for their parents and giving instructions for the disposal of her gold and diamond watches Within a week Berlin’s telephone lines would be dead leaving short-wave radio transmitted from a tethered balloon the only means of communication between the bunker and the outside world The city’s streets continued to face heavy bombardment from Russian artillery fire with the native citizens who had not succeeded in escaping left with little choice but to seek shelter in basements and candle-lit subway tunnels disease and petty crime were rife and the only meat available was that which could be carved from dead horses Stores and private residences were looted for bottles of wine while some resorted to “Saturnalian orgies” or suicide to escape the hellishness of daily existence At 9pm on 28 April, a BBC report citing Reuters reached Hitler that Reichsfuhrer-SS Heinrich Himmler had approached the Allies with an offer to surrender mediated by Swedish diplomat Count Folke Bernadotte It had been declined but Hitler was infuriated that Himmler had assumed the authority to negotiate branding him a traitor to the Fatherland and having his representative in Berlin That fact that Fegelein had married Gretl Braun and was therefore Hitler’s prospective brother-in-law did nothing to stay his hand General Hans Krebs and Bormann made desperate final appeals to Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel and Admiral Karl Donitz respectively to order their commanders to make a final push against the Soviets but a single city block away from the Fuhrerbunker while Busse’s Ninth Army had been brutally cut down on the Berlin-Dresden autobahn “Reich Chancellery a heap of rubble,” Bormann admitted in a telegram In the early hours of 29 April – and shortly after poisoning his beloved Alsatian dog Blondi and handing out cyanide pills to his secretaries who concealed their mounting panic behind subservient smiles – Hitler married Braun in a civil ceremony witnessed by their peers and toasted half-heartedly with glasses of champagne after which the dictator made out his last will and testament Hitler spent the rest of that day putting his affairs in order giving instructions for his papers to be destroyed and saying farewell to his entourage shaking hands and mumbling whatever words of consolation he could muster later remembered tears in his eyes: “They seemed to be looking far away The tension which had been building up to an almost unendurable point in the bunker broke and several persons went up to the canteen – to dance The weird party soon became so noisy that word was sent from the Fuhrer’s quarters requesting more quiet” a pallid Hitler is said by biographer Hans-Otto Meissner to have greeted Magda Goebbels by taking the gold party insignia from his grey overcoat and fastening it to her lapel with trembling hands prompting her to burst into tears at the honour It was the highest recognition ever awarded to a woman by the Third Reich The bodies of Adolf and Eva Hitler were discovered at 3.30pm that afternoon slumped on a bloody sofa by Joseph Goebbels Hitler’s adjutant Otto Gunshe and his valet The latter was so shocked by the sight he simply picked up a Dresden vase Hitler had upset when his body had slumped forward from the fatal gunshot rearranged the tulips and daffodils within and returned it to its rightful place on a side table the Fuhrer’s favourite portrait of Frederick the Great of Prussia glowering down upon the scene Their cadavers were swiftly wrapped in brown army blankets doused in petrol and burnt in a trench in the same Chancellery grounds where Hitler had received the boy soldiers two weeks previously “I don’t want to be put on exhibition in a Russian waxworks,” he had told Gunsche Donitz and Goebbels succeeded Hitler as head of state and chancellor respectively The latter and his wife would have their children put to sleep by lethal injection just a day later It is believed that Magda administered the poison herself a chilling act she appears to have plotted at least a month in advance She had confided as much to her sister-in-law from her first marriage according to Anja Klabunde’s 1999 biography: “We have demanded monstrous things from the German people treated other nations with pitiless cruelty For this the victors will exact their full revenge In the days to come Joseph will be regarded as one of the greatest criminals that Germany has ever produced Frau Goebbels wept but nevertheless played Solitaire with her husband after going through with the executions all six of their offspring lying unwaking in their beds in matching white nightgowns Their parents too would be dead within hours their end mirroring the demise of the Hitlers Berlin surrendered to the Soviet Union on 2 May, the same day that the US armed forces newspaper, Stars and Stripes, carried the news of the Fuhrer’s suicide and succession in the plainest terms imaginable, its headline announcing simply: “Hitler dead”. Germany’s total concession would follow six days later on a date now marked as Victory in Europe Day. But the true extent of the horrors with which Adolf Hitler’s name will forever be associated would only subsequently become known to the wider world, which, in that moment, came together to cheer his downfall in jubilant celebration, daring to imagine a brighter tomorrow. The music is playing and shouts of happy birthday are filling the room there are lots of birthdays but this is one most of us will never see It’s birthday number 105 for Daniel Jacobson He is the Jewish American soldier who survived his WWII trek fighting Germans and made history when sending a very personal message about overcoming Adolph Hitler’s atrocities It was a written message coming from a very unlikely place—- beneath Hitler’s personal letterhead Monday May 6th marks the 79th anniversary of Jacobson writing he exclusively told the Miami Community News program In the Know “I mean I had completely forgotten about it I’m really surprised the letter was saved.” But his writings have survived almost 8 decades to motivate those of the Jewish faith and anyone fortunate to learn of Jacobson’s fascinating adventure We spoke to Jacobson from where he resides now the Oakmonte Village complex in central Broward County Florida Records show Jacobson went into the Army on January 14th I wasn’t smart enough then to know about what I was going to get into,” Jacobson said and when we went we were so unprepared for anything,” he said It was starting from scratch.” Regardless of his thoughts about their preparation Jacobson went into combat for the first time his when his unit landed in Sicily in the summer of 1943 They started fighting up the Italian peninsula “I’d seen so much and read so much about what was happening and everything there There’s no way I’m coming back,” he told us Hitler had already taken control of much of Europe and was forcing Jewish business to close and Jewish homeowners to leave their properties Jacobson would see first hand the depths of Hitler’s ultimate evils that were underway readers learned all about Sergeant Jacobson in the newspaper His 45th Infantry Division moved on to France “You had your friends there and I’ll tell you—you had their back and they had yours “We got him and we were all ecstatic,” Jacobson said “There was just happiness—people—it’s just a feeling inside of you of relief that you have never had before.” 1945 his unit freed the 30,000 prisoners at the Dachau death camp outside Munich Jacobson told us there wasn’t anything in advance that prepared them for what they would eventually discover what Jacobson experienced is the one thing his son conveyed is what he won’t talk about even 79 years later the letter Jacobson wrote to his wife is what cemented him into history Assigned to guard Adolph Hitler’s Munich residence he took the opportunity to go into Hitler’s study and gather the German dictators own emblazoned stationary There were stamps there that had you know the Hitler swastika on it I took all that … and then when I looked at the stationary and I see that it’s Adolph Hitler but I said to me was a profanity to myself what I thought of him And a Jew picked up his personal stationary and is writing letters on it on his stationary to my wife Hitler’s treasured stationary has come to this.” Jacobson went on to write in my first paragraph to my wife I wrote Hitler would be turning in his grave if he knew a Jew was writing on his personal stationary and telling of his defeat “ The stamps show the letter to Julia came by airmail We asked if he realized he was writing history no it is in my mind that I was getting even with Hitler for what he did everything and we got even,” he said His letter is presented in Washington for all to see at the U.S Holocaust Memorial Museum—the letter found 50 years after writing it by his children “We are so honored with everything my grandfather has done with his life “ said Jessie Saiontz who is Jacobson’s granddaughter “It means the world that he’s still with us and he’s still with it amazing human and he is just an inspiration to everybody that knows him His life of service serves as a reminder to people because his story reverberates through decades of all of our lives.” “Danny had the unique experience of invading Hitler’s office,” said Broward County Commissioner Steve Geller the accolades came from the county where Jacobson lives “It’s signed by Nan Rich the Mayor of Broward County—Congratulations,” Geller said and family and onlookers applauded “Danny was able to obtain Hitler’s stationary She also gave Jacobson free rein for his birthday “So you have a whole weekend named for you,” Paul said to cheers sent honors from her district and Congress He became emotional when reflecting on his life’s adventure “This is all like a dream to me right now All I did is what 100 thousand more did what I did and they’re not getting any acknowledgment for it All of them gave up their lives for this country and some people don’t believe this country’s good—-get out,” he said emphatically Russia invading Ukraine is just one concern Jacobson sees the potential of history tragically repeating itself “Right now people don’t even know about Dachau or anything They have no knowledge whatsoever….History is there “If our allies can’t trust us we’re finished I mean right now we are on the verge of it and I dream about this practically every night “ And here at home with the January 6th riot and deep political divisions in America “Nobody knows how close we are to becoming a dictatorship We asked the former Army Sergeant if that means he felt the U.S They can’t see what’s been said what’s in the papers— was on television I mean what’s being said about this country —make this better America “I’m very frightened.” Our time with him concluded with Jacobson expressing an educated fear from a man most would say has seen it all and has now lived 105 years to tell about it Promote your business to the localized audience you want to reach with Mr Ohler does state the drugs did not exonerate Hitler from his decisions and he concluded that the Nazi leader was “anything but insane” But Professor Evans said the book read too much like a revisionist account of Nazi history Similarly Birbeck College Professor Nikolaus Wachsmann, in a review for the Financial Times had “sexed” up his research and it was not true that the German public had easy access to drugs claims new book","description":"Norman Ohler alleges Nazis used a form of crystal meth to drug the German people into compliance Egypt's parliament speaker favourably compared President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to Adolf Hilter on Tuesday saying the Nazi leader “made mistakes” but “built a strong infrastructure” for his country In the opening session of the year's fifth and final parliamentary session, Ali Abdel Aal delivered a speech to MPs calling on them to support Sisi rather than “export problems” to him but what allowed him to expand eastward and westward was that he created a strong infrastructure' “Nation building in transitional periods requires harsher measures… No country would progress without a strong infrastructure,” he said but what allowed him to expand eastward and westward was that he created a strong infrastructure for the German state that remains the source of its leading position in the first world.” Abdel Aal criticised the government for the lack of economic progress suggesting it works far less hard for the country than Sisi "The problem is that we have a president who leaps to achieve goals and a government that walks with one foot," he said has been covered by pro-state local media that quoted Ali’s speech Abdel Aal’s comments came in the aftermath of a recent spate of anti-Sisi protests and a crackdown that has seen at least 2,000 people arrested including well-known critics of the president crowds demonstrated in Cairo and other cities in the first major street protests against president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi since he crushed peaceful protests after coming to power in a military coup in 2013 The protests came after calls from Mohamed Ali, an Egyptian businessman-turned-whistleblower for Egyptians to take to the streets following a football match that evening between Al Ahly and Zamalek The owner of a real-estate company that has worked with the Egyptian armed forces for 15 years Ali has been leading an online anti-Sisi campaign since the beginning of September through a series of video testimonies accusing the president of corruption and misappropriation of public funds Some of the projects assigned to his company are palatial residences worth millions of dollars built for Sisi and his family since he became defence minister in 2012 In his only public response to the claims, Sisi did not deny building new palaces and vowed to build "more and more" palaces "in the name of Egypt" Sisi's remarks have ignited more opposition, with social media campaigns and hashtags calling on Sisi to step down going viral in Egypt and worldwide. At a time when opposition is criminalised and tens of thousands of political prisoners languish in Egyptian jails Ali's revelations have sparked a rare public debate on the military’s opaque budget and the contrast between Sisi’s calls for Egyptians to tighten their belts amid stringent austerity measures and the billions spent on luxury palaces claims that he is acting individually at his own risk Opponents of Sisi from across the political spectrum have expressed sympathy for Ali’s online campaign while TV channels run by exiled opposition leaders have reposted his daily videos were triggered by video testimonies posted online by an exiled Egyptian whistleblower who accused Sisi and other top officials of corruption and misappropriation of public funds has been the most talked about figure in Egypt since the beginning of September when he started posting daily videos online revealing details of palatial residences built for Sisi using state funds earmarked for the military saying he did build palaces and “will build more and more” because they are built “for Egypt” Copyright © 2014 - 2025. Middle East Eye Only England and Wales jurisdiction apply in all legal matters Middle East Eye ISSN 2634-2456 Germany’s military forces were falling apart and the country itself was surrounded by the enemy on all sides The Soviet Union had gained control over Poland in order to make their way to do the same with Berlin; Bavaria, though, never allowed any publishers to reprint the book, and the government never published it itself, until now "I understand some immediately feel uncomfortable when a book that played such a dramatic role is made available again to the public," Magnus Brechtken, the institute's deputy director, told The Washington Post I think that this is also a useful way of communicating historical education and enlightenment -- a publication with the appropriate comments exactly to prevent these traumatic events from ever happening again." The number of articles written about the sex life of Adolf Hitler almost exceeds the coverage of his political career and war crimes. Why the obsession with, of all things, the Führer’s sexuality? Some suspect his preferences in the bedroom might be linked to his behavior on the world stage Others merely want to know what it was like to enter a relationship with one of the most ruthless dictators in human history. A quick survey reveals that Hitler was never particularly preoccupied with relationships, sexual or romantic. Joachim C. Fest’s authoritative biography of the Führer, Hitler presents him as an aloof and deeply serious individual who was enamored above all with his own ideas; when his peers started discussing girls Hitler showed interest only in opera and architecture. he took great pride in the fact that he lacked a private life Hitler was unmarried and appeared to keep no mistresses or girlfriends He thought of himself as an ineligible bachelor: someone who wished to devote himself not to a single person like so many others produced by the Third Reich the supposedly celibate Hitler did in fact conduct affairs with a number of women The details of these affairs reveal a different side of him one in which his lust for power and control is transferred over into the private sphere Each of his relationships was more problematic than the last The first serious relationship Adolf Hitler had was with his niece, Geli Raubal. She was the daughter of Hitler’s half-sister, who asked if she could stay in his Munich apartment while she completed her studies. Hitler took an unexpected liking to the spirited girl, perhaps because she, in the words of biographer Michael Lynch “provided the sort of companionship that politics could not.” It is unknown whether Hitler and Raubal ever engaged in intercourse the nature of their relationship certainly went beyond that of niece and uncle the Führer was extremely possessive of Raubal routinely forbidding her from wearing certain types of clothes or socializing without his permission. Geli was flattered by her uncle’s devoted attention,” Lynch writes in his biography “but soon found it frighteningly overbearing.” When Hitler stopped Raubal from marrying a man her parents had already approved of after Hitler had left for a party rally in Nuremberg Raubal committed suicide with one of his revolvers When it comes to Hitler’s love affairs it’s hard to separate the personal from the political newspapers speculating that Hitler had slain her himself threatened the survival of the entire Nazi Party was so distraught by the accusations that he briefly considered quitting politics altogether. Contrary to popular belief, Raubal’s death left a big impact on the Führer. Upon returning to Munich, he gathered her clothes and belongings into a single room, and then declared that this room would be used as a shrine to her memory, though Ernst Hanfstaengl, a close friend of Hitler’s and author of Hitler: The Missing Years believes Hitler may have exaggerated his grief for political purposes. Hitler’s newfound status and power as Chancellor of Germany made him significantly more attractive in the eyes of others dozens of whom ended up going out of their way to get in his The sister-in-law of Britain’s foremost fascist politician Mitford first saw Adolf Hitler at one of his rallies and instantly fell under his spell. Mitford quickly established herself as a trusted member of Hitler’s inner circle. She not only appeared at celebrations like the Bayreuth Festival, but also accompanied him to diplomatic events, including the 1936 Summer Olympics. Hitler’s appreciation of Mitford was boosted by her increasing anti-Semitism; writing for a Nazi newspaper she warned of a “Jewish danger” in England and proudly called herself a “Jew hater.” Hitler’s relationship with Mitford came to an abrupt end when World War II started urged Hitler not to discuss military matters in the presence of a foreigner begged Hitler not to go to war with her home country she tried to commit suicide with a pistol she had received from Hitler after promising to use it only for self-defense. which occurred because of the bullet in her brain interprets a failed suicide attempt in 1931 as a possible bid for Hitler’s attention. Historians and contemporaries disagree on why Adolf Hitler found himself gravitating toward Braun. Peter Longerich’s Hitler: A Biography supposed the Führer settled for Braun to stop those close to him from gossiping about the reasons for his single status a Bavarian noblewoman and close friend of Hitler’s argued that he preferred Braun over someone like Mitford because she More importantly, perhaps, was the fact that she was uneducated and disinterested in Hitler’s affairs. “Hitler wanted to be absolutely free,” Reinhard Spitzy an SS officer who met Braun on several occasions Hitler wanted a traditional housewife who cooked and cleaned for him instead of a “woman who would discuss with him political questions or who would try to have her influence […] Eva Braun didn’t interfere in politics.” Braun’s interaction with him was fully restricted to the domestic sphere swimming and skiing as she anxiously waited his return from the big city When Hitler failed to make ample time for her during his infrequent visits the two would launch into long arguments that usually ended with Braun in tears and Hitler screaming. Fittingly, Adolf Hitler married Braun in a bunker while Soviet soldiers approached Berlin. Shortly after saying their vows, husband and wife agreed to end their life together. Braun could have survived the war, but chose not to. Hitler’s secretary Traudl Junge claimed Braun did not want to live in a world without the Führer; like so many Germans I’ve built up quite the tolerance to tranquilizers over the years There are only a few episodes of Preacher left before the Season 3 finale and the pace continues to pick up in the latest episode After contacting Herr Starr in the previous episode Jesse meets with the holy leader at his grandma's house as Starr and Marie L'Angelle meet for the first time Cassidy also gets quite a lot of focus in this one as his absolutely brilliant story arc - featuring Les Enfants Du Sang and their leader Eccarius - continues This episode also finally re-introduces us to Adolf Hitler who's now working in a supermarket under the name David Hilter It's the first time we've really seen this character in Season 3 and considering we're coming towards the final few episodes The Saint Of Killers (with Eugene in tow) manages to track down Hitler to drag him back to hell which understandably rubs Hitler up the wrong way While there are still quite a few issues that Preacher needs to work out Hilter is a surprisingly entertaining instalment of the AMC series WhatCulture is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher. Newsweek has combed through claims about Hitler's sexual activities including claims he enjoyed being beaten and forced his half-niece to urinate on him Hitler began a close relationship with Geli Raubal after her mother began working for him as a housekeeper in 1925 The future dictator became obsessed with Raubal though it's unclear if they ever had a sexual relationship British historian Ian Kershaw wrote: "Whether actively sexual or not Hitler's behavior towards Geli has all the traits of a strong Raubal was found shot dead in Hitler's Munich apartment having apparently killed herself with his gun developed an infatuation with 16-year-old shopgirl Maria Reiter after they met in the Bavarian resort town of Obersalzberg In a 1959 interview with German magazine Stern Reiter claimed Hitler "told her that he wanted her to be his wife but at the moment he had not the time to think of such things." after which Reiter attempted suicide in 1928 Reiter traveled to Munich to see Hitler in 1931 during which she claimed: "I let everything happen I had never been so happy as I was that night." However this reunion didn't lead to anything long-term and Reiter later married an officer in the Munich SS At the time Braun was an assistant to Heinrich Hoffmann After Raubal shot herself in 1931 Hitler became significantly more invested in his relationship with Braun According to Braun's biographer Angela Lambert the couple had become lovers by the end of that year As Soviet troops advanced across Berlin in April 1945 Braun and Hitler were married in the dictator's final bunker shortly after which they both died by suicide—Hitler using his gun and Braun by poison It should be noted there is no evidence Hitler had sex with any of Raubal Reiter or Braun when they were still children pedophilia is typically used to describe sexual attraction to pre-pubescent children which none of the three girls would have been when they first met Hitler According to the Marriam-Webster dictionary pedophilia "specifically" is "a psychiatric disorder in which an adult has sexual fantasies about or engages in sexual acts with a prepubescent child." Speaking to Newsweek Professor Paul Lerner who teaches German history at the University of Southern California argued Hitler's infatuation with young women is not key to understanding his politics He said: "It bears emphasis that Hitler's alleged sexual interest in young women (although supported by some evidence) does not tell us a whole lot about the history of Nazism or fascism which I believe is where we should put our energies as historians." There is some evidence Hitler may have been a masochist who derived sexual pleasure out of being hurt or humiliated by women In the 1930s Hitler began a friendship with Renate Müller after being introduced by director Alfred Ziesler According to the 2021 documentary series Hitler's Secret Sex Life Müller later confided in Ziesler that Hitler had ordered her to kick him as he lay on the ground causing the future dictator to become visibly aroused In October 1937 Müller fell from her death while being visited by Nazi officials though it's unclear if this was an accident A 1943 report by the U.S. Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA, concluded Hitler was a "impotent coprophile," who enjoyed being urinated and defecated on during sexual activity an early Nazi and political opponent of Hitler who claimed Hitler forced Raubal to perform these acts on him In an interview with Newsweek Helga Thorson, an associate history professor at the University of Victoria, Canada, said: "Nazi party ideology and propaganda attempted to project and deflect their own behaviors (sexual or otherwise) onto others, usually onto one of their political enemies such as Communists or Social Democrats and Nazi propaganda sought to portray Hitler as a deity as well as a committed and selfless servant of the people on the other—and therefore notably downplayed any references to Hitler's sexual life The Hitler's Secret Sex Life documentary alleges Hitler became "a full-blown porn addict" from 1933 onward with material provided by official Nazi photographer Heinrich Hoffmann and films played at his own home theater In a piece for Newsweek Jewish writer Lindsay Karp said: "Antisemitism is so constant and so colossal that it's become expected in the lives of Jewish people Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground Newsletters in your inbox See all Talk about a dark horse on the Bloomberg most hit profiles today [Monday September 20] Lucky number 13 is Time's 1938 man of the year: Hitler Numbers one through twelve on Monday's Bloomberg leadership boards (the most-searched profiles of the day) make sense - 1) Anthony Noto, because he's leaving the NFL for Goldman Sachs 2) Anthony Scaramucci, because he asked Obama a question during the Town Hall Monday 3) Stephen Nashar, because he's launching a hedge fund.
