Plant Regensburg was the BMW Group’s highest-volume vehicle plant in Europe
BMW Group Plant Regensburg has commissioned a new body shop at Plant Site 6.12 (Neutraubling)
Plant Director Armin Ebner said: “The BMW X1 and BMW X2 produced in Regensburg remain extremely popular with customers worldwide
In the new production hall in Neutraubling
we currently manufacture over 120 vehicle bodies per day
helping us meet high market demand.” Once completed
the bodies from Neutraubling are transported to the vehicle plant in Regensburg
where they are assembled into finished cars around the clock in three-shift operation
Plant Regensburg was the BMW Group’s highest-volume vehicle plant in Europe in 2024
exceeding its 2023 production (238,301 units) by more than 100,000 vehicles
Over a third of the vehicles manufactured in Regensburg in 2024 were electrified
either as plug-in hybrids or fully electric models
“We build our vehicles for the global market and contribute to the growth of electromobility,” said Ebner
40,000-square-metre hall on Berliner Straße was remodelled to accommodate the new body shop in Neutraubling
Around 150 employees currently work in the hall in a single shift
is located on premises owned by the firm Preymesser
the company successfully applied for a change of use from the town of Neutraubling and the Regensburg County Administration Office
“I would like to say a big thank to the authorities for approving this request and for the excellent support from the town and County Administration Office,” said Ebner
The new body shop was constructed in less than 12 months
“What we have achieved here in recent months is not only impressive because of the speed
The cooperation with all internal and external partners has been outstanding,” said Ebner

BMW X1 bodies will no longer be produced solely in the existing body shop in Regensburg
With an investment of over 550 million euros in the past two years
the BMW Group says it has also secured the long-term future of both Upper Palatinate locations: Regensburg and Wackersdorf
Plant Director Armin Ebner: “This signals our firm commitment to Upper Palatinate as as location for industry.” At the same time as building current models
BMW Group Plant Regensburg is already preparing for production of the next model generation
the company aims to set new standards for digitalisation
electrification and circularity – and we are gearing up for this in Regensburg as well,” said Ebner
During the production break over the New Year period
remodelling at the plant continued in the body shop
more extensive structural measures will follow during a five-week production downtime in summer 2025
The BMW Group vehicle plant in Regensburg has been in operation since 1986 and is one of more than 30 BMW Group production locations worldwide
around 1,400 vehicles of the BMW X1 and BMW X2 models roll off the production line at Plant Regensburg

BMW has opened an additional body shop for its factory in Regensburg
the manufacturer currently produces about 120 car bodies per day
This is because the plant's output is constantly increasing
with more than a third of electrified cars already rolling off the production line there in 2024
The iX1 and iX2 as well as the corresponding two combustion models are currently being built in Regensburg
BMW converted a hall measuring around 40,000 square metres in Neutraubling for the additional new body shop
Around 150 employees currently work in the hall in single-shift operation
four smaller extensions have also been built on an area of just under 1,000 square metres
the Regensburg plant now produces around 120 additional car bodies every day
bodies for the BMW X1 series will in future “no longer be produced solely in the existing body shop in Regensburg
but also in Neutraubling,” BMW wrote
the new body shop was built in less than twelve months
The production hall is actually located on a Preymesser site and BMW was already a tenant of the property
BMW then obtained a change of use so that the dismantling of the previous logistics facilities and the construction of the new body shop could go hand in hand
the first test bodies rolled off the production line in January and the ramp-up of production started at the beginning of March
where they are assembled into finished cars around the clock in three-shift operation,” the car manufacturer explained
The Regensburg plant is also preparing for the production of the Neue Klasse in parallel to the manufacture of current models
During the production interruption at the turn of the year
the plant carried out modifications in the Regensburg body shop (not in Neutraubling)
Further ‘very extensive structural measures’ will follow during a five-week production interruption in the summer of 2025
With an annual production of around 342,500 cars
Regensburg was the BMW Group’s highest-volume vehicle plant in Europe in 2024
It was therefore also more than 100,000 vehicles above its own annual production in 2023
more than a third of the vehicles built in Regensburg in 2024 were electrified
either a plug-in hybrid or a fully electric model

Neutraubling | It’s been about 20 years since Krones added the Sleevematic sleeve applicator to its portfolio – and now the company is celebrating a very special milestone: the 1000th Sleevematic is currently being assembled at Krones’ Neutraubling plant
It is slated to be brought online at the Italian beverage maker Acqua Sant’Anna in fall 2025
The Sleevematic is now in its fourth generation
and its continuous development over the years is evident
particularly in terms of performance and efficiency
which can be dimensioned for up to 50,000 containers per hour
is among the fastest inline sleeve applicators on the market
This unparallelled speed is made possible by a rotating perforation unit
the unit perforates the sleeve in a continuous process instead of in intermittent motion
All without compromising the quality of the sleeve
Another benefit is the machine’s exceptional flexibility: During change-overs
the cutters can be set to the new container size automatically – saving time and handling parts
Spare parts needs are also reduced thanks to the impressive longevity of the cutters: one set can make 70 million cuts before wearing out
Conventional cutting units can do only a tenth as much before needing to be replaced
But sustainability is not only about the machine itself but also the materials it consumes
the Sleevematic can also handle newer sleeves made of polyolefin and crystalline PET plastics
Retrofitting the machine for increased sustainability really only takes a few small changes – which Krones has already implemented successfully for a number of customers
The Sleevematic can also be fitted with additional options
such as the Multireel S magazine for label reels
a Shrinkmat steam tunnel and Checkmat systems with a variety of inspection units
The classic configuration of the Sleevematic is as a stand-alone machine within a line
though it can also be integrated into a block solution
And this latter option is what Acqua Sant’Anna chose
the company became a leading brand in the Italian mineral water market and it focuses on cutting-edge technology and continuous innovation in its production
Krones combined the sleeve labeller with a single machine carrousel containing both a Contiroll station and an Autocol station
to handle hot glue wrap-around labels and pressure-sensitive labels
it provides the utmost flexibility to handle any use case
The labelling block will be integrated into a new aseptic line
“We really have been thinking about integrating a sleeve labeller for some time
This new 36,000-bph line was the perfect opportunity to try it out on various container types and sizes
labels are a highly effective means for us to communicate with our customers – and now between wrap-around labels
we’ve got plenty of options for that,” explains Marco Balbiano

Robotics & Automation News
April 7, 2025 by Mark Allinson
BMW has taken a significant step forward in its automation strategy with the commissioning of an expanded body shop at its Regensburg vehicle plant in Neutraubling
The upgrade involved installing a total of 294 industrial robots into the facility – a clear signal of the company’s continued investment in high-efficiency
the newly inaugurated body shop is designed to support rising global demand for the BMW X1 and BMW X2 models
the plant now produces more than 120 vehicle bodies per day
with each body undergoing up to 4,771 welding operations performed by 238 welding guns mounted on robotic arms
While BMW has not disclosed how many robots were used in the facility prior to this expansion
the scale of automation now deployed reflects broader industry trends and BMW’s own trajectory toward “future-proof” production
The company has invested more than €550 million over the past two years into upgrading its operations in the region
which includes not only Regensburg but also Wackersdorf
Plant Director Armin Ebner said the move signals a “firm commitment” to the Upper Palatinate as a long-term industrial location
One of the standout features of the new body shop is the use of digital twin technology
Every robot and system was digitally modeled before being physically installed
allowing engineers to simulate and optimize workflows virtually
This approach reduced downtime during installation and made it possible to begin production swiftly following commissioning
The integration of this digital backbone supports BMW’s ambition of building smart factories where humans and machines collaborate in tightly choreographed environments
Although the press release does not reference human-robot collaboration specifically
BMW has previously been a pioneer in this area — deploying lightweight collaborative robots (cobots) in several of its production lines for tasks such as adhesive application and part handling
The Neutraubling upgrade fits into BMW’s global strategy of integrating automation and artificial intelligence across its manufacturing network
The company has experimented with AI-guided robotic surface processing in its paint shops
and more recently conducted a trial with humanoid robots from Figure AI at its Spartanburg plant in the US
assessing their potential for repetitive or ergonomically difficult tasks
This systematic embrace of automation not only improves efficiency and product consistency but also reflects the automotive industry’s broader shift toward software-defined manufacturing
robots are no longer treated as isolated machines but as dynamic components of a real-time
As carmakers race to electrify their product lines and digitalize production
automation is increasingly viewed as a strategic differentiator
and flexible production are better positioned to respond to shifts in demand
particularly as the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates
BMW has previously announced plans to produce electric versions of the BMW X1 at Regensburg
and the new body shop is expected to play a key role in supporting that strategy
the 294 robots installed in Neutraubling represent a concrete benchmark of BMW’s automation ambitions – and a glimpse into the future of automotive manufacturing
