all I kept hearing about was the Skagen Painters and how I had to see both their work and the beautiful place that inspired them in person
a 14th century brick chapel that was eventually buried by it
Skagen’s powerful display of nature brings more than two million visitors annually to the former fishing village despite the fact that only about 7,500 people actually live there
beauty and hygge vibe attracted so many artists in the 19th century that it became a well-respected artist colony led by a group eventually known as the Skagen Painters
Skagen has drawn the attention of a surprising number of architects
who wanted to pay tribute to the landscape and were interested in the idea of art meeting nature
Skagen maintains a high level of aesthetics
which makes it a very special place to explore
you can take a variety of shore excursions
book a private tour or rent a bike when you get off your ship
Here are a few sights you won’t want to miss:

I still dream about the fish soup at Brøndums Hotel
This beautiful, historic hotel has been welcoming guests
including Hans Christian Andersen and Karen Blixen
Because it was family run and that family included Anna Ancher
the hotel became a gathering place for local artists
the dining room – which is now displayed at Skagens Museum – acted as a gallery for their work

This popular restaurant in Skagen Harbour is known not just for its excellent seafood but for its amazing collection of figureheads — those carved wooden figures that adorn the bow of a ship
which was originally accumulated between 1893 and 1910 by hotel proprietor
features 42 figureheads and carved ornaments all hand-carved from solid mahogany
Each one was found after washing up on shore
broken off an actual ship destroyed by storms and the tempestuous sea
they offer a sobering and often haunting maritime history of Skagen

Skagen Port increases market share to 60% of Denmark’s fish landings despite a drop in total landing value during 2024
The Port of Skagen continues its positive development
cementing its role as Denmark’s leading fishing port
according to the latest figures from the Danish Fisheries Agency
with 60% of all fish landed in Denmark coming through its port
the total value of fishing landings in Skagen dropped by 100 million kroner
The value declined from DKK 1,710 billion (€222.3 million / £188.1 million) in 2023 to DKK 1,607 billion (€208.9 million / £176.8 million) in 2024
This decrease is attributed to lower purchase prices for industrial fish and herring compared to the previous year
landings remained almost identical between 2023 and 2024
with the value of food fish in particular increasing
Its ability to maintain dominance in Denmark’s fishing industry highlights its importance as a hub for seafood landings and trade
despite challenges in the fishing industry
We have positive expectations for the future
and we are working purposefully with businesses and the fishing industry to optimize conditions and create new opportunities for growth.”
With Skagen continuing to attract the majority of Denmark’s fish landings
the port remains a critical economic driver for the country’s seafood sector

In recognition of the 150th anniversary of Impressionism and the important contributions made by the art colony that flourished in Skagen
the Bruce presents “The Art of Work: Painting Labor in Nineteenth-Century Denmark” featuring remarkable and rarely exhibited works from the private collection of Ambassador John L
a group of French artists staged an exhibition separately from the official Salon in Paris and began a radical new movement that came to be known as Impressionism
the Danish painter Karl Madsen (1855–1938) persuaded his friend from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts
to join him in Skagen to paint the life of the remote fishing village
Ancher’s arrival there marked the beginning of an artistic revolution that would upend the academic realism and traditional styles
subjects and locales that defined Danish Golden Age art
Inspired by growing discourses of nationalism and naturalism
Danish artists turned to scenes of everyday life
women and children featuring prominently in their work
as Skagen developed into a thriving art colony in the late 19th century
labor had become a defining feature of Danish painting
paving the way for other artists — including Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) and L.A
Ring (1854–1933) — to contemplate the art of work and the work of art
“The Art of Work: Painting Labor in Nineteenth-Century Denmark” features a selection of 28 works from the collection of Ambassador John L
that illuminate the virtue and beauty of labor
Women engaged in child rearing and ordinary household tasks — such as laundering
setting the table or mending clothes — reflect the quiet intimacy of domestic work
which predominated in the coastal towns where many Danish artists lived and worked
endurance and respectability of local farmers
Other pictures capture the mental exertion required for piano playing
positioning artistic creativity as its own valued form of labor
landscapes and interiors on view highlight the dynamism of work as a subject in 19th-century Danish art
they also stand as potent reminders of the artistic labor inherent to their making
“We are honored to have Ambassador Loeb’s collection on view at the Bruce for the first time since 2005,” notes Margarita Karasoulas
“After serving as the ambassador to Denmark from 1981 to 1983
he amassed the largest — and certainly one of the most distinctive — collections of Danish art outside of Denmark and Scandinavia
This timely exhibition happens to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris
and it explores a salient theme — labor and representations of work — in the oeuvres of Danish painters
Many of these artists participated in the Skagen artists’ colony
which has an interesting parallel to the Cos Cob artists’ colony in Greenwich and the Bruce Museum’s own collection of Impressionist landscapes
which will also be on view this fall in an adjacent gallery.”
“I am thrilled to work with the Bruce Museum to mount this wonderful exhibition of work from my collection,” says Ambassador John L
“One of my longtime goals has been to raise the profile of Danish art both abroad and especially here in the United States
I hope this exhibition will introduce visitors to the unique subjects and modes of painting that originated in Denmark in the long 19th century.”
“The Art of Work: Painting Labor in Nineteenth-Century Denmark” will be on view Nov
The exhibition is organized by the Bruce Museum and curated by Margarita Karasoulas

The Danish Maritime Authority is enhancing efforts to ensure tankers at Skagen Red comply with safety, environmental, and seafarer protection regulations to minimize the risks of the shadow fleet.
The effort is being made in response to the activity of older ships transporting oil through the Danish straits
which poses an increased risk and concern for safety at sea
The Danish Maritime Authority is therefore carrying out port state control of ships that cannot be said to be in harmless passage and that anchor at Skagen Red
The effort is in line with the Danish Maritime Authority’s targeted work to promote international quality shipping characterized by a high level of safety and health on clean seas
as an accident involving damage or sinking of tankers could have particularly far-reaching consequences for safety
It also follows from existing selection methods of ships for port state control that tankers have a particularly high risk profile
which means that this type of ship is prioritized for inspection to a higher degree than other types of ships

One of Skagen's most popular models, the Ancher represents the brand's aesthetic well with a moderate case size, a slim profile and modern, minimalist styling. It's available in a couple finishes, dial colors and strap options — as well as a chronograph version
A solar-powered quartz movement means a longer-lasting battery and nominally lends to this watch's \"sustainability\" theme
The leaf icon on Skagen's site indicates that watches like the Henriksen use materials produced by eco-friendly means
The Melbye features a modern-leaning design with a thin
40mm case made of at least 50% recycled steel
the seconds/minute track is inset into the dial and the bezel features notches reminiscent of dive watches (but it does not turn)
Skagen's minimal aesthetic doesn't mean the brand can't offer a pop of color on your wrist
The Sol does just that and features a solar-charging Japanese quartz movement.
The vast majority of Skagen watches are one size: 40mm. But if you want something smaller, the Grenen is a dressy 37mm and has a sleek modern design with sans-serif Arabic numerals that almost seem reminiscent of Hermes' H08
Diameter: 37mmWater Resistance: 30m
Skagen is among a number of brands that have taken to using recycled ocean plastic for various purposes
from straps and packaging to the watch cases themselves
with a larger 41mm case and even a bracelet made from the material
It comes in a few different versions and colors
Diameter: 41mmWater Resistance: 30m
Black-coated steel case? These are premium features
and this version of the Ancher clocks in as one of Skagen's priciest watches. Don't expect a Swiss or Japanese movement here (expect Chinese)
but you still can't call this watch \"expensive\" compared to other watches with similar features
Maybe you want more out of your watch than hands quietly indicating the time. Skagen's smartwatch running on Google's Wear OS offers all the health tracking and other conveniences you expect in modern life.

If Ikea had a watch department
it might look something like Skagen’s catalog
Ikea is Swedish and Skagen is nominally Danish
but this popular watchmaker offers minimalist Scandinavian design that’s satisfying to many watch consumers on a budget
If you’re in the market for a sleek-looking watch at mostly sub-$200 prices
here’s what you’ll want to know about Skagen watches
Skagen watches aren’t the kind made to be passed from generation to generation. They’re affordable thanks to the the use of elements like of quartz movements, mineral crystal (glass) and sourced production
but none of this means they won’t necessarily be “good” for your particular purposes
Watch enthusiasts often refer to brands like Skagen dismissively as “fashion watches” — i.e., they are made primarily as fashion accessories rather than in a way that fits into horological history and watch collector culture
For those who simply want something fashionable and affordable
Skagen may serve you well for several of years
Branded as “Skagen Denmark,” the company was founded in 1989 by a Danish couple then living in New York
Scandinavian minimalism informs Skagen’s design aesthetic and branding
and it takes its name from Denmark’s picturesque
international brand which might even be considered American
Like many watches in its price range, Skagen’s production is based in China. It was founded in the United States, purchased by the American conglomerate Fossil Group in 2012 and is currently headquartered with its parent company in Texas
but we’ve gathered some the brand’s most interesting or attractive options below
A solar-powered quartz movement means a longer-lasting battery and nominally lends to this watch’s “sustainability” theme

Ali Wood tests Helly Hansen's Skagen F1 deck shoes while on a charter holiday and running children's dinghy sessions at her local sailing club
The traction grip on the shoes are excellent
I’m very attached to my Chatham loafer-style deck shoes so it was going to take some persuading to get me in lace-ups
I was tempted by Helly Hansen’s stylish Skagen F1 deck shoes
as I reckoned they could double as boat shoes and walking shoes
Being practical (and lazy when it comes to shoe cleaning)
but these were too narrow so I had to go up a size
They passed the test beautifully, being grippy and comfortable when worn with socks and allowing me to leap around the boat and race up and down the flybridge steps of our boat while cruising the French canals
They soon got very dirty with the dust from the tow path
but I can’t really blame Helly Hansen for that
high-grade EVA removable insole is quick drying
and went for a long walk through the vineyards and plane trees
They were just as good as a regular pair of trainers
when I got home and wore them without socks for safety boat duty at my Dorset sailing club
I got a few compliments from fellow boaters, and was pleased to wear them without wincing as I dragged the trailer across a stony beach, motored around the harbour and waded thigh-deep, recovering dinghies, children and rubber ducks
removable insole and open-mesh construction came into its own
so were comfortable to wear for three hours on the water
Anyone who’s suffered the dreaded nail fungus from spending too long in wet neoprene boots will understand the benefit of this
I gave them a quick wash with Fairy Liquid
stuck them in the garden to dry off and soon they were good to go again
The Helly Hansen Skagen F1 deck shoes are available in sizes 3.5-12.5

prompting coordinated rescue efforts by Danish and Swedish authorities
A fire broke out aboard a fishing vessel 18 nautical miles off Skagen on Monday evening
later drifted into Swedish waters while still burning
Skagen Rescue Station was alerted just before 8 pm
a nearby cutter had already rescued the fisherman on board
“We arrived at the scene and were informed that the crew member had been safely picked up,” reported the station on social media
Due to the intensity of the fire and the risk of an explosion
the rescue crew maintained a safe distance from the burning vessel
a decision was made in collaboration with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) to deploy Skagen’s larger rescue boat
equipped with fire pumps to attempt to control the fire
The Swedish Coast Guard took over firefighting and towing responsibilities
the damaged fishing vessel was handed over to Danish authorities and towed into Skagen Harbour early Tuesday morning by two Skawlink ships
It was reported locally that when the vessel arrived at port
Local firefighting units immediately began extinguishing the remaining fire on the vessel

a set of foul-weather gear arrives at our offices that makes us really sit up and take notice
Helly Hansen’s new coastal/offshore sailing jacket and bib salopette from their Skagen line is one of those
But it wasn’t the quality that first got our attention—we’ll talk about that in a bit
A true offshore jacket for $375 and $275 for the salopettes
but just handling it you get the sense that
I’d wear this just about anywhere Perfect for Mackinac races
The material is made from Ocean Bound fabric
sourced from discarded plastic near and in coastlines and waterways to clean up those underserved areas but also create a burly yet protective fabric
But it doesn’t weigh so much that you’ll notice it after wearing it all day
so you won’t end up as wet inside as outside
fleece-lined pockets with waterproof zippers
Great for stashing valuables or warming up cold hands
Adjacent to each of those is another fleece-lined pocket—more great hand-warming options
The cuffs have the usual exterior Velcro closure
but inside there’s a soft rubber cuff with another Velcro closure
Water’s going to have a tough time getting into these sleeves
A cool safety detail is that when you extend your arm out of the cuff opening—think waving to rescuers while in the water—a section of fluorescent-green cuff is exposed
providing one more way for searchers to spot you
there are reflective patches at the ends of each sleeve
on top of each shoulder and on top of the fluorescent-green hood
One of the unique features of the Helly Hansen coastal/offshore sailing jacket is the super-high collar
comes about halfway up your ears and then tapers higher yet from there so that about half of the back of your head is protected
can be secured across the bottom of your face and over your nose
cocooning you in a secure envelope of sorts
the flap can be secured off to the left side with Velcro or rolled up to disappear into a small pocket off to the side
Helly Hansen’s bib salopettes are constructed of similarly tough material as the jacket
with extra beefiness on the seat and knees
they’re fully lined with the same moisture-barrier mesh liner as the jacket
There’s a large gusset and two-way zipper to make seeking relief a breeze
We particularly liked how these were designed to extend out from the thigh when holding something
Southpaws will like the dual chest pockets
making it difficult for left-handers to access the pocket
We also liked the waist cinchers with positive latching system
which causes the ankle openings to flare out slightly—think boot-cut jeans
That funnels water away from your shoes instead of straight down into them

One of the central themes driving the architectural concept of the Skagen Klitgård House was the idea of fostering togetherness
especially among three generations of occupants
the architects strategically crafted various spaces within the house to cater to the unique needs and preferences of each family member
The design thoughtfully incorporates open areas
as well as secluded spaces where solitude is cherished
all spaces are united under a continuous pitched roof

In an endeavor to create an even more inclusive environment, the team at PAX Architects devoted special attention to the acoustic properties of the Skagen Klitgård House
An acoustic ceiling was integrated to mitigate noise levels and enhance comfort
The house’s layout features fluid zones that allow for both moments of tranquility and solitary retreat
all while maintaining a strong sense of connection to family life
Visual connectivity between different zones and freestanding elements
cleverly divide the space while preserving uninterrupted views along the extensive facades
Recognizing the importance of family mealtime
the kitchen was designed by PAX Architects as the natural heart of the Skagen Klitgård House
Centrally positioned and overlooking the dining room
it fosters transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces through extensive glazing on both sides
Thick oak mullions frame large panels of glass — blurring the boundaries between the interior and exterior and bringing the landscape in
As a summer retreat meant for both family gatherings and moments of personal reflection
the Skagen Klitgård House differentiates itself by adapting the ceiling height in various spaces
such as the multi-purpose room behind the kitchen
create a distinct contrast with the open and social areas
generating diverse atmospheres within the house
black-painted exteriors and a thatched roof pay homage to the area’s historical architecture
The interior of the house is finished with muted colors that accentuate the surrounding natural landscape
The strategic use of wood elements and nature-inspired design choices results in an environment where the beauty of the outdoors blends with the interior
and soothing sounds of wood contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere
aligning perfectly with the vision of the house being an integral part of the natural environment

Fossil is rolling out Wear OS 3 to another brand
by Victoria Song

she worked for Gizmodo and PC Magazine.Fossil has started rolling out the Wear OS 3 update to its Skagen Falster Gen 6 smartwatches
The only catch is that doing so removes many watchfaces that were previously available — yet another factor you’ll have to weigh when deciding whether to upgrade to Wear OS 3
The disappearing watchfaces were first noted on Reddit (via 9to5Google)
and The Verge was able to confirm that the number of available Skagen watchfaces dwindles from roughly 20 to 5 once you upgrade
but fashion is one of Fossil’s strengths as a smartwatch maker
so it’s a little disappointing to see
Otherwise, Wear OS 3 on the Falster Gen 6 is very similar to what you’ll find on Fossil’s newly released Gen 6 Wellness Edition
That makes sense given that they have the same hardware under the hood
This version of Wear OS 3 isn’t anything out of the ordinary
It’s quite similar to what you’ll see on the Pixel Watch
except with Fossil’s various battery-saving modes and minus the Fitbit integration
Alexa is the virtual assistant instead of Google Assistant here
It’s also missing Google Assistant, which remains absent from non-Samsung and Google Wear OS 3 watches. Fossil lets you use Alexa instead, but this is a reason to withhold upgrading if your entire smart home is built around Google Assistant, for example.
The upgrade is optional, and don’t worry if you don’t see it on your watch just yet. Keep an eye out for updates, and you should see a notification pop up on your watch. Or you can check by heading over to Settings, scrolling down to Systems, and tapping About and, finally, System Updates.

Watches In The Wild The Road Through America, Episode 1: A Model Of Mass Production
The Danish-inspired brand is making waves with horological sustainability efforts
I feel a constant urge to protect the places I most cherish
And while it is important to me personally
I don't often beat the drum regarding sustainability in our hobby
I've always considered watches (which can last for decades) low on the list of environmental offenders
especially compared to disposable consumer goods that go straight into the landfill – or
But we're at a point now where the planet needs all the help it can get
Particularly from brands that reach a massive audience
Skagen – not a brand we cover often on HODINKEE – is setting a positive example by collecting plastics from the ocean that eventually become the case and bracelet for their Aaren Ocean watches
And because it's a part of the Fossil group
it's operating at a scale that should inspire the industry – businesses and collectors
Small independents championing sustainability is certainly a positive trend
Skagen's actually been on a journey trying to replace some of our traditional watch components with more responsible materials
the brand's director of concept and design
Read on to see how the company is harvesting plastic floating in the ocean – then turning it into the watches you'll find in malls across America and beyond
The Andaman Sea and the ecosystems that it harbors are meaningful to me
I did a few live-aboard trips around the Similan Islands and beyond in the mid-2010s
Skagen's efforts are designed to help reverse that trend
The brand works with an organization called #tide
which collects plastic waste floating in the seas around Southeast Asia
#tide trains fishermen and pays them a fair wage to collect all sorts of plastic
like polyethylene terephthalate plastics (PET)
Many developing nations struggle with sustainability efforts because the economy forces people to put making a livelihood over the environment
but in this case #tide has managed to allow fishermen to profit and clean up the ocean while they're at it
from plastic bags to water bottles to COVID-19 medical supplies
is sent to Switzerland and processed by the Jan & Oscar Foundation and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)
who transform it into granules resembling Dippin' Dots ice cream
This material can be made into textile yarn or filament used for 3D printing – or repurposed into consumer goods
The #tide granules are shaped into watch cases specifically for Skagen
Miller notes that although injection molding plastic is a relatively straightforward process
#tide and Skagen have developed a proprietary process that involves mixing the plastic with fiber for strength and pigment for color
and bracelet are all plastic that was once floating in the ocean
they have a relatively understated aesthetic
The final assembly of the watches takes place in Asia before they're packaged and shipped around the world for retail distribution
Skagen senior designer Cory Vogel created the wave pattern on the dial of the Aaren line to encapsulate the idea that essentially the entire watch was made from ocean-bound plastic
the whole exercise was a test for Skagen to see how much of a watch could be made without using any virgin plastic
while maintaining the same quality standards they'd adhere to had they used traditional materials
"You can certainly use something that's been repurposed and regenerated and it works the exact same way," he says
"It's not better or worse – it's the same."

If you've been patiently holding out for a genius smartwatch that will deliver superb performance
you'll love everything the Skagen Falster 3 has to offer
Those who are looking for a very basic smartwatch with a fashionable design at an affordable price may be drawn to the original Skagen Falster
It may not be the newest model but it's beautiful and won't break the bank
and that's certainly the case with Skagen's line of Falster smartwatches
To say that there have been some significant improvements would be an understatement
This is especially true when you compare the first Skagen Falster to the new third edition
If you happen to still be rocking the original and you're considering an upgrade
The original Falster is still a fashionable accessory that's fun to look at it
but that's about as far as it goes in terms of accomplishments
The buggy performance was the biggest complaint of all — and rightfully so
This genius smartwatch has managed to fix all of those issues and tossed in some extras
While the Skagen Falster design has consistently maintained the same minimalist look
there have been some subtle changes over the years
there was a collective frustration at the omission of a rotating crown with the original model
you'll get an ultra-smooth rotating crown that's complemented by two side buttons that can be easily customized to launch your favorite app
Most people will be happy to know that the Skagen Falster 3 has a 42 mm stainless steel case
The 20 mm bands are interchangeable and they're now available in multiple colors and materials
This is a refreshing change from the original Falster band options

every mark that the original Falster missed was graciously fulfilled by the new Falster 3
We're not just referring to a more modern design and the addition of a rotating crown either
Your fitness tracking experience is going to be exponentially better thanks to the addition of a heart rate sensor and onboard GPS
Not to mention that the water-resistance rating has improved to 3 ATM
your trusted companion in the world of Android
In addition to improved fitness tracking features
you can also expect an all-around smarter experience with the Skagen Falster 3
but it's a bummer when there's no speaker and you're forced to read your smartwatch screen
that problem is solved with this new release
A built-in speaker also means you'll be able to hear music
and phone calls on your wrist without the need for Bluetooth headphones
You have to admit that these are some pretty sweet upgrades so far and there's still more to cover
The original Skagen Falster failed miserably with battery life and performance
This can really put a damper on the overall experience
the Falster 3 comes with rapid charging so that your watch can reach an 80% charge in 50 minutes
The extended mode can last for several days on a single charge while you still enjoy main features such as notifications and heart rate tracking
The custom mode allows you to turn sensors on and off as you'd like
Perhaps the most important improvement is the long-awaited addition of Snapdragon Wear 3100
you'll also have 1GB of memory and 8GB of storage
This is a much-needed bump from the original Falster's 512MB of RAM and 4GB storage
you'll have much smoother performance thanks to these key upgrades
If you're holding out for a truly genius wearable that's going to
it's hard not to love the Skagen Falster 3
It's come a long way from the original Falster
You can now look forward to a complete smartwatch experience with GPS
This is a fine piece of tech with a thoughtful design to go with it
It's the clear choice for those who want a smartwatch that can do it all
While the original Falster might be missing some important traits
it's still a gorgeous wearable that fashion enthusiasts will appreciate
You can get it a much lower price point now
This is a great watch for those who are just getting into wearables and don't want to spend too much at first
Don't expect much and you won't be disappointed
The star of the showSkagen set out to impress with the Falster 3 and it was a success
This genius smartwatch filled in all the blanks left behind by the original Falster and then some
A stylish timepiece but not much elseThe most appealing thing about the original Skagen Falster is the reduced price tag and the sleek design
especially in comparison to the new Falster 3

SmartwatchesSKAGEN Falster 3 review: Righting the wrongsSKAGEN finally made a Falster smartwatch that's worth buying.By Jimmy Westenberg•Published onDecember 7
Every year, I’m excited to see what SKAGEN has in store for its smartwatch line
The company just can’t seem to get the hardware right — be it an old processor or weak battery life
SKAGEN’s Falster smartwatches have traditionally fallen short in at least one big area
I’m happy to say that the SKAGEN Falster 3 is the exception. Finally, there’s an alternative to the Fossil Gen 5 that you can buy without worrying about things like day-to-day performance or longevity
Read our full SKAGEN Falster 3 review to find out what makes this watch worth buying
Skagen’s Falster smartwatches have all had a similar design, and the Falster 3 is perhaps the most unchanged out of all of them. At first glance, it looks exactly like the Falster 2
The Falster 3 has what looks to be the same fully round watch case
is a bit bigger than its predecessor at 42mm
The 41mm Falster 2 did feel a bit small on my average-sized wrist
That bigger case also makes for a bigger display
SKAGEN upped the screen size from 1.19 inches to 1.3 inches this time
It is essentially the same OLED panel found on other Fossil Group smartwatches
I’m reviewing the blue silicone mesh model, but there are also brown leather and gunmetal mesh options. The 22mm straps are interchangable, so feel free to swap them out if you’re not a fan
It’s comfortable and gives the watch a unique look
though it does attract lint and hair more than I’d like
SKAGEN makes some of my favorite watch faces ever. They’re simple and customizable, and there are plenty of digital and analog options. There are 14 pre-installed, including a special-edition X by KYGO-themed watch face
Battery life is greatly improved this year thanks to the custom battery modes Fossil introduced with the Fossil Gen 5
All four custom battery modes are available on the Falster 3
Daily mode keeps everything on at all times
extended mode only turns on essential features when you need them
and custom mode lets you turn on or off any sensor you wish
and I kept Bluetooth on a schedule so it didn’t drain like crazy overnight
my SKAGEN Falster 3 review unit lasted me all day and then some
I usually went to bed with around 60% battery left after a full day’s use
You could probably increase that number quite a bit if you turned the always-on display off
but the SKAGEN Falster 3 is a battery champion compared to other Wear OS smartwatches — and the Falster 2 in particular
Under the hood, the SKAGEN Falster 3 comes with a stacked hardware setup: 8GB of storage for music and apps (up from 4GB on the Falster 2), a heart rate sensor, built-in GPS, NFC for Google Pay, and a 3ATM water resistance rating
Like the Fossil Gen 5, SKAGEN also added a speaker module to the side of the device. I love it, and think this should be a standard feature on all Wear OS watches. Not only can you hear Google Assistant replies when you ask it something
you can make and receive Bluetooth phone calls through the watch
if not a little tinny (what’d you expect on a smartwatch?)
I’ve never understood the draw to an LTE-enabled smartwatch
so being able to answer calls through a Bluetooth connection is good enough for me
If you’re an iPhone user
Fossil built special functionality into the Falster 3 that enables iOS calling through Bluetooth
so I unfortunately wasn’t able to test this feature
Given the Falster 3’s classier aesthetic, it wouldn’t necessarily be my go-to wearable for exercising. This is a review, after all, so I’m going to test the heart rate sensor anyway. I tested it against my Wahoo Tickr X chest strap and Garmin Venu during a four mile treadmill run
The Garmin Venu did a decent job at keeping up with the major trends that the Wahoo Tickr X recorded throughout the workout
but ended up at around the same point after the 10-minute mark
The Falster 3 hit its peak heart rate of 172bpm at around minute 10
while the other two heart rate sensors were still on the climb
the Falster 3 dropped back down and gradually rose up to meet the others at around the 32-minute mark
the Venu recorded a max heart rate of 176bpm
I wouldn’t buy the Falster 3 for its fitness accuracy
but at least the sensors are there if you need them
Since this is a Wear OS device, it will primarily sync with Google Fit
Google’s fitness platform has its downsides
but luckily you can sync the watch with any number of Wear OS-compatible fitness apps on the Play Store
This is all leading up to something we’ve talked about a lot here at Android Authority: The SKAGEN Falster 3 might be one of the best Wear OS watches out there
I don’t want to discount SKAGEN’s work on the hardware here — it’s truly great
But Google still hasn’t made much movement with Wear OS in the past year or so
and the company doesn’t necessarily instill confidence between the lack of updates and the time it takes to roll out bug fixes
If you know what you’re getting yourself into with Wear OS
Just don’t be surprised if the software that ships on the Falster 3 is the same software that sticks around for a year or two down the line
You can buy the SKAGEN Falster 3 from Amazon, Skagen.com, or other online retailers for $295. $295 is about the maximum I’d say you should pay for this watch. It’s good, really good. But considering the Fossil Gen 5 is on sale quite frequently for far less than that
you’d need to really like the Falster 3’s design in order to buy this at full price over the Fossil
2020 that the SKAGEN Falster 3 would make its way to India for Rs
There’s no word on exact availability in India as of yet
but we will update this review once we learn more
Not all-in on Wear OS? You’re in luck; there are many other good smartwatch options out there. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 sees frequent discounts, and the Apple Watch Series 5 is probably the best bet for iPhone users.
Thoughts on our SKAGEN Falster 3 review? Are you buying one for yourself or would you rather go for the Fossil Gen 5?
Noreen Skagen, who died at home last week, is remembered as a quiet trailblazer in both law enforcement and women’s history.
When she applied to the Seattle Police Department in 1959, Noreen Skagen surely had no plans to become a pioneer in women’s history and law enforcement. At the time, she merely wanted a steady job.
But Chief Skagen, 87, who died at her home in Mill Creek last week, would become the city’s first female assistant police chief, and attract notice from President Ronald Reagan, who nominated her to become Western Washington’s first female U.S. Marshal in 1988.
She’d come a long way from pounding the pavement in a skirt and high heels, carrying her pistol and handcuffs in a specially made purse, which was standard during the 1960s for the two dozen female officers in Seattle’s Women’s Bureau, said author Adam Eisenberg, now a Seattle municipal-court judge, who profiled Chief Skagen in his book “A Different Shade of Blue: How Women Changed the Face of Police Work.”
By the early 1970s, the Seattle Police Department had merged its male and female branches into one, and Chief Skagen’s career took off.
But during the early days, much of her work involved advocating for women and children in dire situations, crawling beneath homes and into crawl spaces to rescue abused and neglected kids.
“They were social workers with guns and badges,” Eisenberg said. “It’s not that men weren’t trying to help, but they really didn’t get it.”
They did, however, understand Chief Skagen’s ability.
She moved quickly through the ranks, often serving in a communications role as the face of Seattle police and eventually heading the department’s field support bureau, until Reagan tapped her for the federal post.
“She understood her role as a trailblazer, and she was very proud of it,” Eisenberg said. “But she was also very sharp in understanding that to navigate a man’s world in that time required a tremendous amount of finesse.
“She was incredibly smart and subtle about how to work in the boys club,” he observed.
Sometimes the job meant calming angry police spouses who called to complain about their husbands suddenly riding in patrol cars with women. Other times, she coached male officers who had no idea how to work with women in the field.
Chief Skagen met her second husband, Roy Skagen, at the SPD, where he too was an assistant chief. He survives her.
Born in Seattle to two Italian immigrants, Chief Skagen graduated from the University of Washington during the 1950s with a degree in journalism.
She wed her first husband and began a career as a writer. But by the late 1950s, with her marriage falling apart and two young sons to support, she applied to the police department, primarily for the paycheck, said her elder son, retired Seattle Police Deputy Chief Clark Kimerer.
Graduating first in her class at the police academy, Chief Skagen was, nonetheless, relegated to chasing down runaways, handling “domestic disputes,” and other disturbances deemed the province of women.
Kimerer recalled visiting his mother at work as a teenager, and listening while she spoke with a young suspect arrested on prostitution charges.
“I sat there for about 45 minutes, because my mom was absolutely not going to break away from that conversation. This was a woman with a horrible life story and some pretty dark moments, a person who might have been a throwaway in many peoples’ eyes,” Kimerer said. “But mom spoke to her with such patience and compassion.”
That image lasted in the young man’s mind for weeks afterward. Later, he learned that his mother had stayed in touch with the suspect, attempting to shift her life onto a safer path.
“I saw that kind of thing over and over again,” Kimerer recalled. “She was trying as hard as she could to bring humanity into shattered lives.”
“She’d go toe to toe with any kind of demonstrator in any kind of confrontation, just like you see on TV today,” said former Seattle Police Chief Patrick Fitzsimons, who promoted Chief Skagen more than once. “She was equal to any three guys. She’d put her uniform on — but it was a skirt, not trousers.”

Dan has covered the technology world for over a decade at The Verge.Danish watch brand Skagen is announcing its first touchscreen smartwatch at CES this week
The Falster runs Android Wear and joins Skagen’s lineup of connected hybrid analog watches
It will be available starting at $275 later this month
Skagen watches have long favored a minimalist
The Falster is not particularly thin — it’s just as thick as any other Android Wear watch you can buy — but it does have a very simple presentation
with a 42mm case and a single push button on the side
It is designed to appeal to either men or women
but it will probably be a little large on smaller wrists
the watch sat comfortably and had good proportions
Android Wear 2.0 runs on the fully circular touchscreen
and the Falster has a handful of custom watchfaces that the Skagen says are designed to simple and clean
The dark interface is also said to improve battery life
though the company isn’t claiming any particular advancements over other touchscreen smartwatches
The watch will be able to run the assortment of apps and watchfaces available to any Android Wear watch through the included Google Play Store
The technology and features built into the Falster are just as minimal as its design
nor does it have GPS tracking or a heart rate monitor for fitness activities
It seems that the Falster is designed to be an everyday smartwatch
as opposed to one that will appeal to a techie or fitness-focused niche
The Falster will be available in four different colorways
two of which have mesh bracelets (the others have black or brown leather straps)
It is the first connected watch in Skagen’s lineup available with the company’s signature mesh bracelet
the Falster sits in the middle of the range of Android Wear watches available today
though with its lack of certain tech features
it may seem a bit underequipped compared to other smartwatches

Skagen has a solid reputation as a maker of minimally styled watches, with the original Skagen Falster turning heads back in 2018
and we find ourselves with the Skagen Falster 2 - keen to attract both hearts and minds with more than just a pretty face
but as a classy looking smartwatch for the discerning fashionista
it's hard to fault its looks and levels of comfort
Here's our full verdict on the Skagen Falster 2 and what works and doesn't work for the smartwatch
the price of the Skagen Falster 2 changes depending on the strap you choose
The 'budget' option (available for $275 / £269 / AU$469) uses a silicone or leather strap
The silicone options come down to black or blush color - effectively the choice between more masculine or feminine looks
Neither look or feel particularly expensive but they're lightweight and perfect for those using their watch at the gym or when exercising
the brown leather variety at the same price reflects the price tag far better
$295 / £299 / AU$499 buys the smarter looking Magnetic Steel variety with a magnetic closure clasp rather than usual watch buckle
Skagen has consistently set out to offer Danish-inspired designs and ideals through its products
That's clearly seen in the Skagen Falster 2
the smartwatch's fully circular display is now 40mm
It's also 1mm thinner than the original watch
The watch we were sent had the black silicone strap which feels rather cheap to the touch but does blend in nicely with whatever you're wearing
There's also no worry of sweat causing it an issue as it's quite durable
The Skagen Falster 2 has three buttons on the side
The larger middle button is a rotating crown that's used to open up your apps menu
There are also two other buttons that can be set as shortcuts. By default, one is set to adjust the color of the watch face, while the other opens Google Fit
We'd recommend immediately changing one to Google Pay for convenience
there's the choice of watch straps at purchase
The watch has universal fittings for watch straps so you can swap it to anything that you feel like wearing
That's a refreshing change when so many smartwatch manufacturers tie you into proprietary straps
The silicone strap uses a typical watch buckle so it's not at all fiddly to put on your wrist
we'd recommend the magnetic strap for those that want to use the Skagen Falster 2 on a night out
but the silicone strap is ideal for more active users
The back has an optical heart rate monitor which sticks out ever so slightly but it's hardly noticeable when wearing it
That's also where the magnetic puck goes for charging the smartwatch
The Skagen Falster 2's screen sums up a lot about the watch - it's straightforward in its effectiveness
Its screen is a 1.19-inch circular AMOLED with a 320 x 320 resolution
That's a slightly lower resolution than some smartwatches in this price band offer (like the Michael Kors Access Runway) but the display still looks bright and clear in use
With a watch face diameter of 40mm, it's smaller than the likes of the largest Apple Watch 4 but this suits the lightweight nature of the watch
The bezel around the screen is quite thick and something that will stand out more on lighter colored watch straps
and simply makes the watch feel a little chunkier and sturdier than its weight suggests
Wear OS makes it easy to switch between watch faces
Just press and hold on your watch face to change between numerous options
There's no over the top glitz or glamour here
All the watch faces are about getting to the point and it's a welcome thing to see

“Don’t let anybody tell you that O’Hare isn’t romantic,” Pete Buttigieg said in his remarks last week
when it was announced that he was President-elect Biden’s pick for the cabinet position of transportation secretary
He then went on to note that he proposed to his husband
But the thing in Bonos’ piece that stood out to me, and the reason I bring it up here on All That Glitters, is that even though Buttigieg was the one who proposed (with a ring), it was Chasten who sent them on the road to engagement when he gave Buttigieg a watch as a token of his affection, one that has come to take on the significance of a pre-engagement gift.
Chasten presented the watch while on a walk to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin
“I told Peter that I didn’t want to watch the rest of the world go by without him.”
And what watch does Buttigieg wear? It’s a Skagen Ancher in black and stainless steel
It’s not a Rolex, or an Audemars Piguet, but it’s got Scandinavian design cred, and a man-of-the-people price point (in fact, it’s for sale on the Skagen site for $87 right now)
“Travel in my mind is synonymous with growth
even love,” Buttigieg said in his aforementioned speech
It’s a line that can be applied to watches too
from the stylish and accessibly priced models to the finest grand complication timepieces in the world

but a little romance—a romantic tale like this one
even—might be all you need to convince them

I stress-tested this jacket on a violently pitching sea during a storm
and expertly constructed from the most advanced materials available
decades of hard-earned sailing and outdoor experience in the most challenging conditions have been poured into the Helly Hansen Skagen Offshore Sailing Jacket
This is the best jacket for sailing and boating out there
Brushed fabric chin/face guard with Velcro attachments
But while it’s all very well reading about such things
you can only get a full appreciation of how good such technical kit is by taking it out amongst the kind of conditions it was designed to perform in
that on the day I found myself testing the Helly Hansen Skagen Offshore Sailing jacket
I ended up in the eye of a storm out on the open sea
way out of my depth on the wildly rocking deck of a Figaro racing yacht
This two-layer jacket has an inner lining made from 100% recycled mesh
which is soft and comfortable if worn next to skin (although typically you will have a base and mid-layer on beneath the Skagen) and assists massively with the breathability of the garment
There are no genuine inside pockets on the Skagen
the conditions are usually such that you won’t want to open it for fear of letting rain and seawater in past all those brilliant defences
but there is a chest pocket that sits outside the main zip
but inside the Velcro-shutting AquaGuard flap
But it’s the outer layer where all the real magic happens
completely windproof and very breathable (10000+ g/sq.m/day)
the Skagen’s outer shell provides excellent protection from everything the elements can and will throw at you when you’re out to sea
sealed seams and double overlapping front flap
The cuffs have a fully adjustable but double-secure sealing system
The storm hood (also made entirely with high-vis material) can be tucked away completely behind the neck
it provides comprehensive protection for the head and the majority of the face
The lower hem can be drawn in tight around the hips and waist, so worn with the Helly Hansen Foil Sailing Pants
you have a totally waterproof soft suit of armour to keep you dry and warm in even the worst conditions
A high collar and low-reaching back panel complete the comprehensive coverage area
The Skagen has two big deep lower side pockets
cleverly accessible from both the top and the side
as well as a pair of angled breast pockets with fully waterproof zips and a soft
thermal lining to keep your hands warm if required
On each shoulder there is a super reflective patch
The maiden voyage for my Skagen Offshore Sailing jacket was during a baptism-of-fire, hands-on winter sailing trip on a Figaro Bénéteau 3 racing yacht with professional sailors Joan Mulloy and Piers Copham
and since we were supposed to be cruising along the coast of South Wales - alongside the Gower Peninsula
with the Mumbles and the Brecon Beacons shaping the skyline - the scenario should have been idyllic
sideways rain is hitting us full in the face
and the boat is bucking up and down so violently on mountainous waves that the bow is sometimes submerged
you couldn’t conjure more perfect conditions for genuinely stress testing this kit
Even getting on to the yacht was a hair-raising adventure that should
we were brought out to the sailing vessel on a RIB driven by a super-skilful pilot
who somehow managed to stay one step ahead of the waves that furiously chased us around a confused sea for 40 minutes
The transfer from the small boat to the larger
sleeker one was achieved via a nerve-jangling leap of faith
I spent six hours learning the ropes while getting lashed by relentless rain
drenched by sea spray and pushed around by the agitated wind
It was one of the most exciting experiences I’ve ever had
The elements did their absolute best to get at me
but both the jacket and the pants were a match for them
With the storm hood up and the chin guard pulled across
even my face was spared from the force of the deluge
tucked inside one of the waterproof pockets
Besides the amount of water sloshing around in the air
the temperatures were in low single figures too
but the thermal protection offered by the two-layer Skagen jacket kept me more than warm
If you’re sailing or doing any sort of boating or coast-based activity during the months of the year when conditions can be seriously challenging – which
can be quite a chunk of the calendar – the Helly Hansen Skagen Offshore jacket is one of the most technically capable
impressively protective and well-featured jackets you will ever find
and it allows you to stay active in even the worst of weather
and there are myriad safety features in case something does go wrong

Google has a new version of Wear OS to put on display
and though it's coming to many older smartwatches it's always fun to pair it with some brand new hardware
Fossil Group obliged, launching the new Skagen Falster 2 and Diesel Full Guard 2.5 smartwatches at IFA 2018 — they're both truly beautiful
but also completely different in their design approaches
bold and extremely unique among smartwatches
Both come from brands we know from the mechanical watch world
but the designs have adapted well to smartwatch functionality
Skagen is clearly extremely proud of this design
even though it isn't dramatically changed from the original Falster that was launched at the start of the year
But there are critical updates here that mostly come down to the new model being standardized on the same platform as the rest of the Fossil Group portfolio
GPS for activity tracking and two programmable side buttons
as did the two side buttons that operated with a satisfying click
I was only able to put on the versions with a silicone strap and the new magnetic stainless steel mesh
but there's also a deep cognac leather that looks like it would really class up the whole look
Moving up from the standard silicone band to one of the mesh bands is only a $20 up-sell from the base $275 price
which is totally reasonable considering the quality of the bands
On the opposite end of the design spectrum
This is the kind of polarizing look you either love or hate
and that's exactly what Diesel is going for — and why there are other more understated options available from other brands
It's built on the same basic platform as the Falster 2 in terms of battery and capabilities (heart rate
or you hate it — but that's the variety we need to see in smartwatches
I was actually surprised by how thin the Full Guard 2.5 was in person after looking so massive in photos
Perhaps it's simply because the case is so wide and tall (47 mm wide and 56 mm tall)
that the thickness doesn't seem as much of an issue
it's definitely large and will definitely be too big for some people — you shouldn't be checking out a Diesel watch if you wanted something small and simple
The metal casing has strongly contrasting colors
lots of texture and a mixture of multiple metals
meaning there isn't a dull angle on this thing — particularly in the black and orange color scheme I'm showing here
Once again there are many band options that stand out just like the casing does
Depending on the combination you choose you'll be paying around $325-375 for the Diesel Full Guard 2.5
which creeps up into the range that fewer people will be interested in unless
Both watches are running on the same basic internals
4GB of storage and the Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor
That last bit is what's grating on some people as they see a couple beautiful watches that have a processor due to be replaced on September 10
this is just how product cycles work — these watches have been in development for months
well before the company had any idea when they can expect a new processor
Fossil Group will be supporting these watches with upcoming software just as long as it would any other product
It's also a positive sign that Google is showing off the brand new Wear OS update on watches that are still running the Wear 2100 processor
Until we know exactly what the real-world benefits will be with the new processor

The Skagen Falster 3 is a breath of fresh air for smartwatches
but only in terms of looks: its industrial style is unique
but its software and features are very run-of-the-mill
but at least it packs enough power and display quality to meet your basic smartwatch needs
It’s a small refinement, which characterizes this sequel to an already-stylish wearable. This version also packs a speaker that allows you to answer calls from your watch or hear Google Assistant responses - nice
the Falster 3’s boilerplate version of Wear OS doesn’t pack any surprises or major additional features
Nor does it harness the smartwatch’s multiple buttons well
which makes the whole package feel less cohesively designed than some other smartwatches.
it’s best to appreciate the Skagen Falster 3 as an aesthetic piece with smart connectivity rather than an advanced smartwatch
as there’s no help beyond a fairly minimal tutorial - not even a guide in the box
the Falster 3 stands out with its burnished metal design and reliable Wear OS functionality
It’s rare we see smartwatches that can be dressed up or down
can accompany suits just as well as sweatpants
The Skagen Falster 3 is available now in select markets for $295 / £279 (around AU$425)
with availability in Europe by the end of that month.
That price makes it just a bit more expensive than the Falster 2
though the handful of additional features earn that bump
and you’ll be able to get this functionality in more affordable wearables
which sits between the 44mm and 40mm sizes for most bigger smartwatches; its 11mm thickness is likewise not the most we’ve seen
but it certainly undeniably puts this in the traditionally masculine watch style.
Our model came with a metal wristband (‘Gunmetal Gauge Mesh’) weaved of dense links
a bit like compact chainmail that predictably pinched errant hairs and added weight that took a day or two to get used to
But it contributes to an overall industrial style that grew on us as we grew accustomed to its heft
Just a note - the 22mm straps are easily swapped out
but that’s a larger size than the 20mm wristbands that typically come with smaller (38mm) smartwatches
The three right-mounted buttons are a bit more for look than function
The center has a crown with respectable resistance - twisting it to scroll felt natural
which is the most pleasant part of navigating around the watch
Pressing it will go back to the watch face
and pressing again will go to the main app menu
you can swipe backward on the display – a gesture we found by accident
as it’s not introduced in the tutorial
This is frustrating given the perfectly suitable top and bottom buttons
which can only be mapped to app shortcuts – but being able to go back seems a much more common use case
On the opposite (left) side of the watch is the speaker slot
On the back of the watch are the heart rate sensor and power ring to clip on to the charger
the Falster 3 charges off a direct capacitive connection – no wireless charging here – so make sure you don’t jostle it free from its charge pad
Which happens often given how heavy the watch-and-watchband are
The 1.3-inch OLED display is another strength of the Skagen Falster 3
While the screen is not quite as large as some other smartwatches
especially with its noticeable bezel and thick inner lip
it’s notably crisp and bright.
which isn’t a surprise given the use of Wear OS.
The display sits nested in a noticeable metal ring, which should also serve to protect it from nicks and dings. Such accidents might happen as its flat cross section protrudes a bit more than the curved screens of smartwatches like the Apple Watch 5
and it’s often easier to swipe with a finger through the interface (like sorting through the extensive list of workouts) rather than spinning the crown and accidentally pressing its ‘back’ button
In keeping with the watch’s designer focus
the fourteen included digital watch faces are stylized to a fault
with several veering into silly (one is just a ring of the phrase “ITS ABOUT TIME” with each letter corresponding to an analog number position from 1 to 12)
But they’re nearly all dark faces with light markings
which is apparently a battery-saving feature.
This is a Wear OS watch through and through
it’s loaded with Google Fit and its suite of workouts and features
you’ll like the Falster 3’s fitness experience.
there’s not a lot of custom integration
Want to switch from one workout to another
if the exercise you want isn’t one of your three recent picks
you’ll need to scroll through the Fit Workout app’s entire catalogue in alphabetical order - which is fine for Australian Football
from curling to snowshoeing - and while we didn’t test out the more esoteric activities
while others that require checking in after every set (strength training) were cumbersome.
you’ll have to manually start and stop each workout
unlike other smartwatches that detect motion and both ask if you’ve started an exercise and check in to see if you’ve finished
It’s not a particularly smart fitness experience
the Falster 3 itself is more than capable of fitting in with your workouts despite its metal body
and we didn’t find it got in the way of any exercises
You’ll certainly notice its heft during your first few sessions
especially if you’re using the metal mesh wristband
It’s also water resistant down to 30 meters
so feel free to take it in the shower and do some light swimming
though its 3 ATM max pressure means it’s not great for diving
The Skagen Falster 3’s heart rate sensor works during workouts and breathing exercises (accessible through the app)
You can also have it periodically take readings throughout the day
though that will drain the battery a little faster than normal
a slightly dated processor that still hasn’t been succeeded
Paired with 1GB of RAM and the Falster 3 has the best specs possible for a Wear OS smartwatch
We barely noticed any slowdown while sorting through the interface
whether using touch controls or the crown to sift through apps
The watch does choke while attempting to hastily scroll through the ‘Tile’ app snapshots - swipe right from the home watch screen for those - though
it doesn’t skip a beat when spinning through the vertical app list
but it’s more than the 4GB on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2
You can use the Skagen Falster 3’s NFC capabilities with Google Pay
though it’s unclear if the functionality can be used with any other pay system (like Samsung Pay
the Skagen Falster 3 is more generous in its battery options
along with a custom one to toggle a dozen different potentially-draining options like Wi-Fi
while the medium (‘Extended’) sacrifices some features to eke out close to two days
‘Time Only’ does exactly as it says
turning off connectivity and notifications to allegedly stay on for weeks
The watch will helpfully prompt you to switch down to a lower mode when it hits certain capacity thresholds to keep the Skagen Falster 3 on longer while preserving some functionality
it’s easy to keep this smartwatch alive for longer
just as long as you’re willing to manually tinker with battery modes
the watch’s heft may make charging on the included cord-and-puck a bit more difficult
Its weight in the body and the metal strap can drag it off ledges or shelves if you’re not careful
Fossil Gen 5
In the realm of stylish smartwatches within the typical consumer’s price range
Fossil’s smartwatches have reigned supreme - and for good reason
but with a more traditional circular look than the Falster 3’s burnished metal
with a bit more of a traditional smartwatch look - plus
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is a good alternative to the Falster 3 if you’re looking for a more fleshed-out smartwatch experience
yet manages a rounded-glass look without appearing too bulbous
Its connected features obviously work a bit better with a Samsung device
but can function with other Android and even iOS phones
Its haptic dial is also a bit more fun to play with than the Falster 3’s physical crown.
Withings Steel HR
Withings is one of the only other mainstream smartwatch makers that opts for style over extra functionality
and the Steel HR is the brand’s most prominent ‘hybrid’ smartwatch
That means the Steel HR relies on analogue watch timekeeping (hour/minute hands and all) with a small digital sub-dial inset in the watch face proper
It merges a traditional timepiece look with connected functionality
while much of the latter needs to be seen on a linked phone
manages to stretch its battery life to an entire month

eclectic colors of a contemporary fashion brand with the intentional design of a sustainable watch company
You get a jewelry collaboration with five unforgettable pieces
This summer, Skagen in cooperation with Copenhagen Fashion Week worked with Danish fashion darlings Baum Und Pferdgarten—known for its high style and signature chain prints—to create a limited-edition watch and jewelry collection
The result is eye-catching twists of metal with statement-making earrings
including a dramatic gold-tone neck collar
catching the 1980s moment with pieces that look ageless yet fashion-forward
“Jewelry can oftentimes get lost on the runway
but we were passionate about designing styles that brought the Danish DNA of both brands together in a bold and beautiful way,” says Halle Millien
associate creative director of Skagen Jewelry
“We couldn’t be prouder of the work our teams did for this collaboration.”
The collab’s three watches also pay homage to the sustainability promises of both brands with at least 50% recycled stainless steel cases
The duo revealed their partnership in August during Copenhagen Fashion Week; the pieces will officially go on sale in early 2023
Both brands “express and celebrate” Danish design
“We have been longtime fans of their brand and their collections; it was a really exciting opportunity to meet them and then to collaborate with them,” Miller says
“I think the resulting product reflects how much fun we had working together
Baum Und Pferdgarten had a great story for the collection that was easy for watches and jewelry to explore.”
The reversible watches are some of Miller’s favorites
“The turning case adds an engaging element not normally found in watches, and we are able to offer two distinct looks on the same piece. It’s fun to offer the versatility. And our more jewelry-inspired design actually references a Skagen piece from our archive,” Miller says
“The piece is light and extremely wearable
which are attributes of all Skagen watches
but it has a great fashion element with the chain link
which directly references Baum Und Pferdgarten.”
Baum is the brainchild of designers Helle Hestehave and Rikke Baumgarten, who serve as the brand’s creative directors. Their Baum Und Pferdgarten clothing collections are found in retailers and department stores in more than 25 countries worldwide
“We really wanted to take Baum’s concept of a timeless woman and make jewelry that highlighted that idea
We worked on jewelry that was inspired by flowing fabric
which you can see in the bold twisted styles,” Millien says
“The second jewelry concept tied more closely to Baum’s classic chain print
The creative spark that came from this collab means only one thing, Miller says—there likely will be more to come. Skagen also has worked with other design houses, including CLED for several notable eco-friendly collections
“There is a real joy in stepping into another creative world and working with experts and innovators,” Miller says
“I hope that our customers will get a similar sense of joy and fun with these pieces as we had in designing them.”
Top: Talk about a chunky statement piece—the Baum Und Pferdgarten collaboration with Skagen resulted in a unique collection that stands out in any crowd
Prices are not yet available on these pieces
as they will be sold to the public in spring 2023

ProcessingFF Skagen closing Denmark fishmeal plantThe Hanstholm site in northern Denmark
which celebrated 50 years of operations in 2019
has been part of the FF Skagen group since 2014
The Skagen Falster makes a tremendous first impression
looking like it should easily cost twice its $275 price tag
But middling battery life and a lack of distinguishing features put form a bit too far ahead of function
Button doesn’t offer tactile ‘click’
Skagen’s Falster is quite an impressive smartwatch
Nailing a look so refined is something that some larger manufacturers
have yet to figure out in the wearables game – and maybe never will
But as we’ve seen with competitors that have come close
The Falster achieves some minor miracles for Android Wear 2.0
like packing the experience inside one of the thinnest
slickest watch bodies we’ve seen yet
defies its stainless steel and leather-clad design
But without expected hardware essentials like a heart rate sensor
or a speaker to take calls sans wireless headphones
this watch is unfortunately a tough thing to recommend outright
The Skagen Falster smartwatch is now globally available through its website, as well as e-retailers serving the US, UK and Australia. It’s not currently on sale via traditional retailer avenues like Amazon or Best Buy
but it will likely end up there at some point
Skagen’s first smartwatch starts at $275 (£279
about AU$350) for two color stylings: brown leather and black leather
If you’re looking to upgrade to a steel mesh strap
but leave it to an actual watch brand like Skagen to make such a difficult task look easy
The Falster smartwatch sits at almost perfect parity with peak “dumb” watch style
Available in four color styles and an equal number of straps
there’s likely a Falster to match your aesthetic
Skagen sent us a brown leather model for review
but you’ll also be able to pick up this watch in a shade of stainless steel that matches in color with black leather
The latter two models will set you back a bit more money
There are quite a few smartwatches that feature a round chassis – salvation for iPhone users looking for an alternative to the square Apple Watch 3 – and Falster gets added onto that pile
though it has a few extra design details that are appreciated.
but the Skagen is the first Android Wear smartwatch that looks and feels good enough to just leave alone – another perk to chalk up to Skagen’s heritage in making watches
shiny bezel surrounds the circular AMOLED display featured on this watch
The fact that the screen sits within two layers of bezel makes it look a bit cramped
but the pixel density is high enough for text to pop with clarity
The rich colors and contrast afforded by the screen tech shows its stuff nicely here
