Tell us about your participation in the Walla Walla Valley I was born 39 years ago at Saint Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla to Mexican immigrant parents who After spending twelve years away—pursuing my education and exploring the world—I returned to the valley two years ago now accompanied by my two children and partner tending to the roots that have sustained me while putting down new roots in the place that shaped me I currently serve as the Executive Director of the Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition an organization founded in 2016 that formally established its first board of directors and executive director just last year My work and my family are at the heart of my life my participation in the Walla Walla Valley each deeply intertwined and inseparable.  My commitment to racial justice is woven into the fabric of my daily life and participation in the Wally Walla Valley as well I strive to ensure that immigrants in our valley are not only recognized for their inherent value but also have access to the resources and opportunities that empower them to thrive equitable community that will foster a brighter future for everyone who calls the Valley their home Outside of work, I serve on the board for the Walla Walla Community Council and love to explore new businesses in the valley I coached our son’s soccer team and enjoy supporting and spending time with my community of friends and family.    How does what you do fit into or address larger issues in our region As the Executive Director of the Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition I see my role and our organization as pivotal in addressing the intersection of immigration and community integration within a region deeply shaped by agriculture and the agriculture economy relies on immigrant labor to sustain its agricultural economy yet immigrant communities often face barriers to full participation in the social Our organization seeks to help bridge these gaps ensuring immigrants not only have access to vital resources and legal protections but also that their contributions to the region’s prosperity are recognized and valued The challenges faced by immigrants in Walla Walla—whether related to legal rights or healthcare—are emblematic of larger national issues surrounding immigration reform By advocating for policies that protect immigrant workers ensuring they have access to education and healthcare our work addresses these systemic inequalities on a local level while contributing to broader efforts for justice and equity within the region and beyond.  What is something you’ve learned about this area that surprised you or that you weren’t expecting There isn’t enough room to adequately answer this question–and that is why I love the question I read this question as an invitation to reflect on the very nature of diversity itself–what is it the diversity of Walla Walla is perhaps most visible in the tapestry of people who call this place home—from long-established families whose roots go back generations to the more recent waves of immigrants drawn here by seasonal work in the vineyards and fields bring with them not only their labor but also their languages enriching the cultural fabric of the valley in ways that continue to evolve Walla Walla is a microcosm of the broader American experience—a place where generations of settlers sometimes uneasily but often with a shared sense of place.  What do you think this region will be like in five or 10 years I believe Walla Walla will undergo significant changes particularly in terms of its economy and demographics driven by the increasing influx of high-wealth individuals I’ve witnessed firsthand how concentrated wealth in mountain towns can dramatically shift the dynamics of a community often leading to rising living costs and widening economic disparities While Walla Walla is different in many ways—its diverse economic institutions and manageable population size give it a unique stability—there is a growing trend toward attracting more affluent residents particularly with the arrival of wealthier individuals and families Walla Walla will need to find innovative solutions to ensure that the community remains accessible to people of all income levels The challenge will be balancing the benefits of increased wealth and investment with the need to create affordable housing options and maintain a healthy vibrant community where families can thrive without being displaced by rising costs it will likely see greater diversification with more opportunities in industries like tech This shift could attract even more people from outside the region leading to a more cosmopolitan mix of residents while still preserving the small-town charm that makes Walla Walla unique The next decade will likely be a time of growing pains but also an opportunity for the community to define its identity in a way that ensures its economic and cultural vitality is accessible to all If you could be involved in an aspect of Walla Walla life that you are not currently involved with If I had the time and opportunity to be more involved in an aspect of Walla Walla life that I’m not currently engaged with I would love to return to working with youth While my current commitments—raising two young children and serving as Executive Director of the Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition—are incredibly fulfilling I look forward to being more active in my children’s activities as they grow and discovering where there might be gaps in available youth programming I have a background in teaching and coaching dance and I would love to eventually bring those skills back into the community I see tremendous value in extracurricular activities I hope to be able to contribute to Walla Walla’s youth programs or helping to shape new opportunities that are accessible to all kids especially those in underserved communities Is there anything else Whitman students should know about our community that you haven’t mentioned yet?  One thing I’d like Whitman students to know about our community is how deeply interconnected Walla Walla’s people are—across different backgrounds it’s a place where diverse experiences and histories meet particularly when it comes to its immigrant communities but it’s also a place of transformation and opportunity with a growing focus on inclusivity and community-building The changes happening here—such as changes in business and the changes in our national administration—bring both challenges and exciting opportunities especially in terms of creating a more equitable accessible town for people of all backgrounds There’s also a real sense of belonging here and residents work together to support one another there’s a shared understanding that the health of this community depends on how well we care for and uplift each other Whitman students who engage with Walla Walla have the chance to make a meaningful impact—whether it’s through academic work or simply connecting with people who call this place home like me.  Abby Muro will be available for questions and further conversations on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at noon in Reid Campus Center, Room 207. The Career and Community Engagement Center will provide lunch for the first ten students in attendance. Japanese hip-hop icon and globally respected DJ, Takayoshi Murota—better known as DJ Muro—has teamed up with Japanese beer brand Kirin Ichiban and Australian label Deus Records to launch a limited-edition capsule celebrating the golden age of crate digging Fresh off his three-stop tour through Sydney and Melbourne the artist has debuted a specially crafted ‘record hunting jacket’ and matching tee exclusively for the Australian market This collaboration isn’t just merch—it’s a wearable tribute to the artistry of analog sound and the unshakable legacy of first pressings More Than Merch: A Nod to the Diggin’ Lifestyle DJ Muro has earned his global reputation not only through his skills behind the decks but also as a tastemaker with an encyclopedic knowledge of records “The King of Diggin’,” isn’t just a moniker—it’s a lifestyle The launch of the record hunting jacket is a tangible extension of that ethos created for those who share a reverence for the hunt Crafted in Tokyo and designed in partnership with Deus Ex Machina the jacket reimagines functionality for vinyl heads who know the value of a good find Its rear-facing pocket is built to hold up to 10 full-sized LPs—a feature made with serious diggers in mind The utilitarian build combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with subtle but intentional design upgrades The collaboration draws on the energy of Muro’s live performances, particularly his recent sets across Australia Each show during the tour added momentum to the release as the DJ sported the jacket on stage—turning the piece into a live A closer look reveals its thoughtful construction: multiple storage compartments resized to cradle records a cable-secure lapel outfitted with a Kirin Ichiban press stud and a visual flourish in the form of an embroidered illustration adorning the sleeve and back pocket The entire piece serves as an homage to first pressings—not just the records themselves but the idea that there’s something sacred about the initial moment music meets medium I think it’s the most special.” That sentiment drives the capsule’s ethos: preserving the emotional resonance of the first encounter—whether with a rare record or a limited-edition piece of wearable art Australian-Only Pressing with Global Vibes Adding to the rarity of this drop is its geographic exclusivity This ‘first pressed’ edition was created specifically for Australia featuring a unique colorway and exclusive embellishments that won’t appear in global versions The Kirin Ichiban accents—like the branded snap closures and distinctive illustrations—tie the piece directly to the collaborative spirit behind the collection The partnership also includes a black unisex cotton tee created in the signature graphic style of Deus with vintage Kirin-inspired branding that tips its cap to vinyl lovers everywhere and made to accompany the jacket without competing for attention a collectors’ edition DJ Muro vinyl is also included—a fitting final detail for a drop that places so much weight on tactile authenticity Stevie James of Deus Ex Machina summed it up best: “The Record Hunting Jacket combines Japanese values of function and craftsmanship with crate-digger culture.” That fusion is exactly what makes this collaboration stand out This drop creates a space where underground music culture it speaks directly to a community that values stories this release offers a moment of connection—a tribute to analog love in a digital world The capsule is available exclusively through Kirin Ichiban’s website and Instagram and quantities are expected to move quickly With the jacket’s previous iterations already selling out twice this Australian version brings both scarcity and cultural depth to the table For anyone chasing the high of the first press—or just looking to add a uniquely crafted piece to their rotation—this collaboration delivers It’s not just a nod to vinyl culture stitched and pressed into something you can wear Input your Seidler said on the introduction of Titan Vision: “In alignment with Muros’ company ethos … [it] serves to provide a new and unique platform for artists—in this case, digital and NFT artists.” He also hoped that Titan Vision allowed “more people to see the value in NFTs and recognize the artists as brands continue to expand on the utility or merit they offer.” Seidler also predicted that “there will be many creative ways NFTs will become part of our everyday lives in the years to come.”An on-site bar served up "Liquid Lightning," a signature cocktail that, in a fun touch, was made with ice cubes that lit up.Photo: Courtesy of Titan Vision Sign in In-depth Interviews with Authorities in Business, Pop Culture, Wellness, Social Impact, and Tech. Depends how you define interesting! We joke all the time there should literally be a Netflix show about us because it’s always something. From artists getting stuck up in lifts to running out of gas on the way to a client meeting, our sanity has been tested. In one case, very early on at Muros, we were doing one of our first big brand campaigns, and we had just wrapped the project and flew home. Two days later, we got a call from the client that their team had just arrived to do an in-person site visit and see their mural, and as they arrived, they were literally watching it be painted over in real time with a Porsche ad! This was TWO DAYS INTO A 30-DAY FLIGHT! That was the first real big gut punch where we looked around the room and realized it was up to us, and us alone, to just breathe and figure it out. There was no “adult in the room” to tell us what to do; we had to fix it ourselves. That was the first of many jaw-dropping phone calls we’ve received with unexpected hiccups. We’re getting good at crazy. Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that? Well, there was the infamous lettuce incident. We had just finished a mural in San Diego for a burger company, which we were not onsite for because we thought the job would be “simple.” Upon completion, we sent final photos of the mural to the client, and they let us know that the lettuce leaf was not done correctly and would need to be redone … it was actually a legal/trademark issue. The artist had left the job site (and drove 2.5 hours home), and the wall would need to be repainted in an unknown base color so it could be changed and the project completion would be delayed a week — all to add another crinkle in the lettuce leaf. That leaf would cost us money, sanity and a not-so-great call to the artist after a not-so-great call from the client. Biggest lesson: slow down and pay attention to details. We needed to be clearer in our expectations with the artist, either be onsite or do more real-time check-ins, and ensure the finished product was matching the approved concept. Had we done that, we could have caught the error sooner and provided a better experience for the artist and the client (and saved ourselves a big headache and lots of money). Ok. Let’s now move to the main focus of our discussion. For the benefit of our readers, can you explain why you are an authority about Social Media Marketing? I’ve been doing social media marketing for best-in-class, million and billion-dollar brands since before Facebook offered ads (back in the day, we used to “like gate” Facebook pages, lol … it’s come a long way!). Because of the great companies I’ve had the privilege to work for, I had top-tier support from the platforms directly, which is a luxury smaller businesses don’t have. I’ve participated in numerous alphas and betas and have been able to do primary research to understand that our efforts weren’t just hitting vanity metrics such as likes, but rather were helping us achieve our marketing goals, like brand affinity, awareness or sales. I’ve been able to leverage social media to boost revenue across industries, from companies like United Airlines, to Coca-Cola, Ziploc, Progressive Insurance and dozens more. Which social media platform have you found to be most effective to use to increase business revenues? Can you share a story from your experience? Historically, I’ve found the combination of Facebook and Instagram (when you bid across both) to be most effective. If you’re smart about targeting, testing your ad creative, and ensuring you have the right frequency for the task at hand, I’ve found they are hard to beat across all brand metrics. Their targeting in particular is really incredible. When I was at Nestlé Purina, we were targeting new buyers for Fancy Feast Cat Food, and one of our goals was to make inroads with younger consumers because the existing customer base back then skewed older. So, we used social media to appeal to younger buyers, and our Facebook/Instagram campaign resulted in a 25+ point lift in ad recall, which was 2.5 times the consumer packaged goods (CPG) norm, and we also saw a +19% lift in brand awareness, which was six times the CPG norm. Let’s talk about Instagram specifically, now. Can you share five ways to leverage Instagram to dramatically improve your business? Please share a story or example for each. Because of the position that you are in, you are a person of great influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. :-) Woof. That’s a heavy question. While it may not be the greatest impact to all people, I’d love to be part of a movement that helps heal our country. I’ve felt a growing level of disappointment in our country’s leadership, in the spread of misinformation and polarizing viewpoints. It’s all very overwhelming. When speaking with friends recently, everyone acknowledged feeling this way. I can see improvement coming in a variety of forms, including fact checking. Esther Freud showed last year in Stitchers that it is possible to write a good play about the practical difficulties faced by prison visitors but Michalik skates lightly over that topic He also seems torn between creating an ingenious plot and addressing the subject of crime and punishment Much of the later action is taken up with the plight of Angel who has been unjustly sentenced to 28 years for murder We are never told the nature of the mysterious “cause” that has led him to violence It also strikes me that Angel is more in need of a good lawyer than the therapeutic role-play that Michalik shows him finally accepting and Emma Pallant are very good as the inquisitive Alice and the long-suffering Jane I also can’t fault Declan Perring as the impetuous Kevin Victor Gardener as the far-from-devilish Angel and Rio Kai as an onstage musician the play is the victim of its own ingenuity it doesn’t make much sense (who sanctioned this prison visit?) that hardly seems the right response to the burning issue of how and why we lock people up At Park theatre, London April 9, 2025e-Paper Brigade Road and its adjoining lanes have always been a favoured haunt for old Bangloreans — the bookshops jamming sessions and a chance to hobnob with kindred spirits While most of it is now changing with familiar landmarks being replaced by newer ones its quintessential soul still remains with a newer generation walking down its once-green paths One place to capture that vibe of old is Muro It is kind of hard to remember what used to stand there but then you stop wracking your brains as this beautifully lush restaurant beckons The greenery and earth tones are a throwback to the city of yore and the fact that they have live music every Wednesday evening is a huge plus Muro translates to wall in many languages and “is a symbol of a culinary challenge for those brave enough to scale it.” With places offering the “pan-Asian” experience popping up all over the city Muro rests its case in the capable hands of chefs Somporn Chaisuntorn and Sanil Mohan the duo serve up a little bit of Thailand with every bite We begin with a pomelo salad with bird’s eye chilli and cashew nut which was a refreshing change from the tried and tested No matter what you order — be it a smoothie it seems almost a shame to deconstruct what was so beautifully put together The staff recommends the crispy pork cheung-fun and we are glad we took them up on it The soft casing belies the crunch underneath as well as the delicate flavour coriander root and scallions add to each bite Muro has a wonderful choice of vegetables in their menu — from chive flowers and banana blossoms to Chinese greens We try the vegetables in pumpkin sauce next — lotus stem yam bean and shimeji mushrooms come together in a mildly spiced creamy dish that is quite unlike other small plates we have had anywhere else The other recommendation we got was to try the turnip cake puttu and sushi rice was forming at the back of my mind but I am so glad my imagination disappointed carrot and mushroom are steamed and then stir fried served as cute bite-sized cubes and garnished with garlic; there was nothing turnip-y about them I would say it was the biggest delight of the afternoon we settled for the lamb massaman curry and jasmine rice making it a comfortable choice for those who are not too keen on experimenting we strayed from our usual choices of chocolate or cheesecake and tried the coconut caramel coffee flan “expecting the unexpected” pretty much summed up our time at Muro and the caramel ice cream with creamy coconut and coffee crumble was nothing less There is no way to do justice to their spread in one sitting with noodles baos and more beckoning you on a gastronomic trip Terms & conditions  |  Institutional Subscriber Comments have to be in English, and in full sentences. relationship between AI and equality with a specific focus on the impact of the gender data gap on algorithmic discrimination and assessed the effectiveness of the EU legal framework in addressing such a phenomenon Alessia will look into the legal challenges and implications of the use of AI in education particularly with regard to learning analytics Her work aims to address issues related to data protection and privacy investigating the legal framework that governs the processing of personal data in the development and application of learning analytics tools exploring issues such as the appropriate legal basis for data processing the delineation of responsibilities among stakeholders the principle of transparency and the right to be informed Her work is based on the belief that while AI-driven learning tools hold huge potential to improve educational outcomes they also raise significant privacy concerns that must be addressed to build trust and ensure the responsible use of these technologies When a brand successfully sparks consumer engagement coveted social media posts typically follow Finding marketing strategies that nurture organic stories and conversations involving the brand) requires a hearty dose of creativity and authenticity discusses the company’s recent consumer survey and how brands can inspire engagement through art When it comes to modern word-of-mouth marketing it is no secret that social media is king. According to Adweek more than 85% of people say user-generated content influences their decisions more than brand-generated content how can a brand naturally engage consumers and inspire that coveted Instagram post  At Muros, we conducted a surveyOpens a new window  of 1,000 consumers to understand better how murals and experiential art resonate A big takeaway from our survey: more than 41% of all respondents (and 51% of respondents age 18-29) say they have shared images of murals on social media An even bigger takeaway: 73% of respondents say they are more likely to purchase from a brand that engages in creative marketing than traditional marketing Weaving murals or art activations into marketing campaigns can help brands and marketers foster engagement and organically boost user-generated content (UGC) Here are three ways brands can tap into that share-worthy art experience See More: Brand Suitability: The Next Chapter of Brand Safety About 67% of survey respondents say they are more likely to take notice of a brand that uses murals as a part of its marketing campaign That purposeful positioning sets the stage for engagement  When the creative process is underway the art and artist create immediate points of interaction for passersby the art itself continues to draw consumers Beyond the surprise-and-delight aspect of folks coming across beautiful art in an unexpected location brands can expand the mural’s appeal in more interactive ways For example, artist Chuck U created a mural for Noodles and Co.Opens a new Instagram with its hashtag-inspired posts featuring a halo situated for Instagram poses as well as “angel” ambassadors Some brands strategically expand opportunities for interaction via QR codes and AR features added a QR code benefitting nonprofit water.org to its mural Augmented reality (AR) can also encourage interaction When passersby scanned the LIFEWTR mural in Venice Beach (created in partnership with a Doja Cat album release) parts of the artwork became animated on their phones While art appeals broadly across generations and demographics brand art tends to be embraced when it genuinely reflects a particular community’s vibe and culture needs to reflect cultural differences to be authentic a mural in downtown Atlanta may have an entirely different style than one in nearby Old Fourth Ward and what resonates with insiders as well as visitors When companies choose to create several art experiences across the country each piece is an opportunity to differentiate the brand and show an understanding of local culture a retail brand specializing in sports equipment teamed up with Muros to create art installations in six cities and promote the brand’s partnership with New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor six homegrown artist ambassadors were key to the campaign’s success eye-catching art drew consumers into the retail locations the brand genuinely connected with passersby thanks to those artists who translated the nuances of their communities through their work That sense of connection and authenticity matters when you want to encourage user sharing and engagement. According to a survey by StacklaOpens a new window consumers are 2.4 times more likely to say user-generated content is authentic than brand-created content See More: Amplified Marketing Solves the Problems of Weary Content Marketers a brand that leverages art installations and thoughtful experiential marketing is seen as a supportive community insider instead of a corporate outsider While the artist anchors the local connection the location can also deliver a sense of community to the project — consider a mural painted on a beloved barber shop wall or brightening up a neighborhood restaurant  Art installations benefit the artist the business that owns the wall space being rented and the surrounding businesses that see more traffic as the art captures people’s attention More than 85% of our survey respondents say they are more likely to purchase from a brand that supports its local community Art is the perfect backdrop for this expression and art installations create new marketing avenues and user-generated opportunities for brands When an individual shares content of your brand’s art on social media and that reflection of the user’s own style and community lead to increased awareness and credibility for your brand Weird sound outage Random Ramble: What's your EDC?
