As the digital horizons for hospitality loyalty continue to expand
a new tech startup has thrown its hat into the ring: Blackbird Labs is a blockchain-backed loyalty platform developed by Eater and Resy founder Ben Leventhal
who aims to use digital loyalty to shake up the restaurant business model
Blackbird Labs — which just raised $24 million in series A funding led by a16z
with participation from Amex Ventures and Bolt by QED — is free to use for customers
who can sign up inside a participating restaurant and begin earning points to cash in for restaurant-specific perks on the platform

While Leventhal said that there will be opportunities for membership pricing in the future
the program is really built for restaurant operators
who are charged for use of the software in a pricing model that fluctuates based on how often they use it and to what extent
Operators will also be able to gather guest insights from the platform
Blackbird hopes to build a digital database of customer regulars
so operators can surprise and delight their frequent flyer guests

“We're laser-focused on connecting restaurants to customers and giving restaurants scalable ways of better understanding and making good use of their best and most loyal customers,” Leventhal told Nation’s Restaurant News
“[Blackbird] provides a platform that restaurants can make their own and use as an extension of their individual brands.”
Blackbird Labs has expanded to 80 restaurants (22 of which have gone live on the platform)
including many New York City-based independent casual-dining and fine-dining restaurants
Examples of Blackbird-exclusive perks include a free fountain soda for first time check-ins at New York’s Upside Pizza (and a free slice for second-time check-ins)
free ice cream toppings every fifth check-in at Morgenstern’s Bananas
and complimentary drinks and appetizers at check-ins other participating restaurants
Blackbird hopes to scale operations and add new restaurants across the country
Leventhal said he wants Blackbird Labs to go global
there has been a decline of profitability across the restaurant industry
and if we don't change course… there will be even tougher times ahead,” he said
the opportunity is to think about connectivity with customers as a key driver of future success and economic sustainability for restaurants… Five years from now
we hope for a much healthier restaurant industry where restaurants and guests are tightly connected through really good software and restaurants know who their best customers are.”

Swanson’s name will be soon be seen on Route 394 forever
Andrew Cuomo in August officially designated a portion of the road as the Lance Cpl
The sign is to remind people of Swanson’s service
“He’s definitely going to be missed,” said Alec Andrest
Swanson’s team leader at the time of his death on Feb
was killed by a roadside bomb during combat operations
An official ceremony Friday was held at the American Legion in Lakewood
Members of Swanson’s family including his father
said he and Swanson shared a vehicle almost every day during their tour except “that one day.”
He said there’s days that he forgets that he’s gone
‘My son left and there’s days that I forget he’s not coming back,’ and that has always just really stuck with me,” Andrest said
Andrest highlighted the family support Swanson had and said several Marines spend time with the family every Feb
He noted that he is just one of hundreds of Marines who served with Swanson
and was a 2007 graduate of Southwestern High School where he ran track and played football
He was also an active member of Boy Scout Troop 131 through middle and high school
that was represented at Friday’s ceremony
Swanson also attended Jamestown Community College before enlisting in the Marines
he was deployed to Afghanistan in August 2010 for a seven-month tour
Swanson received several awards during his service including the National Defense Service Medal
the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the NATO Medal – International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan
Local representatives who spoke during the ceremony included state Assemblyman Andy Goodell; Jacqueline Phelps
field representative of Congressman Tom Reed’s Office; George Borrello
Region 5 state Department of Transportation director; Greg Carlson
Chautauqua County Veterans Service Agency director; Susan Rowley
the local Blue Star Mothers president; Holly Baker
the Gold Star Mothers president; and the Chautauqua County Color Guard
Busti Town supervisor also attended the ceremony
Goodell and Young both passed initial legislation in the state Assembly and state Senate
The official legislation and pen that Cuomo signed was presented to the family Friday
“At the young age of 21 on the other side of the world
Lance Corporal Swanson made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation while deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom,” Young said
“Aaron was one of those members of the 9/11 generation and he had just turned 12 years old when those planes hit the World Trade Center
the Pentagon was attacked and that plane crashed in a Pennsylvania field
And I know that entire generation was really impacted and affected by what happened
“Aaron was one of those brave young people to volunteer on behalf of our country,” Young continued
“He stood up and said that I want to protect my family
He has that from me and everyone else here
Young noted that the memorial highway will give the Lakewood native that legacy he deserves
who also spoke to the family and those in attendance
told the story of his daughter who also served in the Marine Corps
He detailed his gratitude that he was able to welcome his child home after serving overseas
a luxury the Swanson family was not afforded
“My daughter came home and I’m thankful for that,” Goodell said

and it marked the occasion in an unusual way
The company published the Tock 10
a list of 10 restaurants that “took a chance” by joining the reservations platform in its early days
the Chicago fine-dining phenomenon where Tock got its start
as well as Lazy Bear in San Francisco and Spoon and Stable in Minneapolis
The Tock 10 is the first installment in a regular series that will highlight some of the more than 7,000 restaurants on the platform
It also represents the start of an editorial strategy for Tock
which has until now been primarily focused on building software
That includes the innovative pre-paid reservation model that helped fine-dining restaurants drastically reduce no-shows when it was introduced 10 years ago
The shift is in large part a function of its new owner, American Express, which acquired Tock last year for $400 million as the credit card giant doubled down on the restaurant business
The deal brought Tock together with Amex-owned Resy
using their individual strengths to make each other better
but we think we're going to be able to do it better," said Matt Tucker
"We will combine the best products from Tock and the best products from Resy into a unified experience."
Tock’s restaurant selection skews heavily toward fine dining as well as wineries and hotels
and the company is known for its tech innovation
Resy made its mark with trendy local restaurants and a robust editorial arm
they account for more than 27,000 restaurants and 50 million registered customers
Tucker said it’s too early to say whether Tock and Resy could eventually merge into a single reservations platform
But there are already signs that an exchange of ideas is underway
we've been challenged by our brethren at Resy
And so it's given us the ability to spread our wings a little bit and say
It comes amid growing competition in the restaurant booking world
not only between Tock/Resy and their largest rival
Many POS systems now offer reservations as a standard feature
which are looking for ways to drive more consumers to their own sites
to come back and start your journey here?” Tucker said
More content and curation are potential answers to that question
which is one reason why Tock is making efforts on that front
But it’s also focused on staying two steps ahead with its technology
which will help restaurants and customers alike
it recently introduced a new feature for restaurants called multi-experience tables
This allows restaurants to list a table on Tock for different uses
from a la carte dining to a wine pairing or chef’s tasting
Each of those occasions represents a different level of revenue for the restaurant
So it may offer the table for a pricier chef’s tasting first
then scale it down to a wine pairing or a regular a la carte meal if no one bites
“It's giving the guests what they want and giving the restaurant the ability to maximize revenue per seat.”
More competition and new ownership will bring other changes to Tock
It will broaden its selection beyond primarily upscale restaurants to include local favorites like Chicago’s Pequod’s Pizza
And after years of relying mainly on word of mouth to get restaurants to sign up
American Express will give Tock some real marketing muscle to help it win business
and has a wealth of experiences and resources to impart to the younger company
“We're excited about the Amex acquisition,” Tucker said

It's great to see American Express and Resy work with restaurants to find new income streams during this difficult time. Likewise, it's great to see the companies offer added benefits to premium cardholders that may not be getting as much benefit from their travel perks. This is a win-win-win situation for everyone involved: Amex, restaurants and customers.
I'll personally take advantage of American Express Winter Patios and Yurt Villages this winter. They include some New York restaurants I've always wanted to check out. Plus, they seem like a super interesting way to dine safely during the coronavirus pandemic.

Zoubutong de “hongse diguo zhilu” [The “Road of Red Empire” That Cannot Be Traversed]an article by Li WeidongLetscorp.net
China’s Futureby David ShambaughPolity
More than halfway through his five-year term as president of China and general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party—expected to be the first of at least two—Xi Jinping’s widening crackdown on civil society and promotion of a cult of personality have disappointed many observers
who saw him as destined by family heritage and life experience to be a liberal reformer
Many thought Xi must have come to understand the dangers of Party dictatorship from the experiences of his family under Mao’s rule
was almost executed in an inner-Party conflict in 1935
was “dragged out” and tortured during the Cultural Revolution
and was eased into retirement after another Party confrontation in 1987
one of Xi Jinping’s half-sisters was tormented to the point that she committed suicide
as the offspring of a “capitalist roader,” was “sent down to the countryside” to labor alongside the peasants
The hardships were so daunting that he reportedly tried to escape
that both father and son showed a commitment to reformist causes throughout their careers
the elder Xi pioneered the open-door reforms in the southern province of Guangdong and played an important part in founding the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen
In 1987 he stood alone among Politburo members in refusing to vote for the purge of the liberal Party leader Hu Yaobang
The younger Xi made his career as an unpretentious
pro-growth manager at first in the countryside and later in Fujian
three of China’s provincial units that were most open to the outside world
In the final leg of his climb to power he was chosen in preference to a rival leader
who had promoted Cultural Revolution–style policies in the megacity of Chongqing
once Xi acceded to top office he was widely expected to pursue political liberalization and market reform
Instead he has reinstated many of the most dangerous features of Mao’s rule: personal dictatorship
The key to this paradox is Xi’s seemingly incongruous veneration of Mao
Xi’s view of Mao emerges in the official biography of his father compiled by Party scholars
whose first volume was published when Xi was close to achieving supreme power and whose second came out after he had become Party general secretary and state president
Describing the elder Xi’s near execution in 1935
ordering his release with the remark that heads are not like scallions: if you cut them off they will not grow back
Mao then promoted Xi’s career as an official in Yan’an and as a top bureaucrat in Beijing after 1949
the biography blames Mao’s secret police chief
and claims that Mao protected Xi by sending him to a job in a provincial factory safely away from the political storms in Beijing
When the Cultural Revolution broke out a few years later and Red Guards “dragged out” Xi from this factory job to subject him to the physical abuse and denunciation called “struggle,” the biography says that Mao’s premier Zhou Enlai had Xi imprisoned in a military barracks near Beijing as a way of protecting him
These stories have doubtless been massaged to show Mao as Xi wants him to be shown
But they are grounded in historical reality and help to explain the complexity of Xi’s relationship to Mao’s legacy
Xi’s respect for Mao is not a personal eccentricity
It is shared by many of the hereditary Communist aristocrats who
as Agnès Andrésy points out in her book on Xi
form most of China’s top leadership today as well as a large section of its business elite
Deng Xiaoping in 1981 declared that Mao’s contributions outweighed his errors by (in a Chinese cliché) “a ratio of 7 to 3.” But in practice Deng abandoned just about everything Mao stood for
Contrary to the Western consensus that Deng saved the system after Mao nearly wrecked it
Xi and many other red aristocrats feel that it was Deng who came close to destroying Mao’s legacy
Their reverence for Mao is different from the simple nostalgia of former Red Guards and sent-down youth who hazily remember a period of adolescent idealism
as the pro-democracy thinker Li Weidong writes in a much-discussed online essay
“The ‘Road of Red Empire’ That Cannot Be Traversed,” the children of the founding elite see themselves as the inheritors of an “all-under-heaven,” a vast world that their fathers conquered under Mao’s leadership
Their parents came from poor rural villages and rose to rule an empire
The second generation is privileged to live in a country that has “stood up” and is globally respected and feared
They do not propose to be the generation that “loses the empire.”
It is this logic that drives Liu Yuan, the son of former president Liu Shaoqi, whom Mao purged and sent to a miserable death, to support Xi in reviving Maoist ideas and symbolism; and the same logic has moved the offspring of many of Mao’s other prominent victims to form groups that celebrate Mao’s legacy, like the Beijing Association of the Sons and Daughters of Yan’an and the Beijing Association to Promote the Culture of the Founders of the Nation.1
The princelings seem to invest literal biological meaning in the “bloodline theory” of political purity that was popular among elite-offspring Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution: “If the father was a hero the son is a real man
if the father was a counterrevolutionary the son is a bad egg” (laozi yingxiong erzi haohan
They see no irony in cheering Xi Jinping’s attack on corrupt bureaucrats although Mao purged their own fathers as “capitalist roaders in power.” Mao’s purges they excuse as a mistake
But they see today’s bureaucrats as flocking to serve the Party because it is in power and not because they inherited a spirit of revolutionary sacrifice from their forebears
Such opportunists are worms eating away at the legacy of revolution
The legacy is threatened by other forces as well
Xi holds office at a time when the regime has to confront a series of daunting challenges that have all reached critical stages at once
It must manage a slowing economy; mollify millions of laid-off workers; shift demand from export markets to domestic consumption; whip underperforming giant state-owned enterprises into shape; dispel a huge overhang of bad bank loans and nonperforming investments; ameliorate climate change and environmental devastation that are irritating the new middle class; and downsize and upgrade the military
Chinese policymakers see themselves as forced to respond assertively to growing pressure from the United States
and various Southeast Asian regimes that are trying to resist China’s legitimate defense of its interests in such places as Taiwan
Any leader who confronts so many big problems needs a lot of power
and Mao provides a model of how such power can be wielded
and military hierarchies by virtue of his chairmanship of each
exercised these roles within a system of collective leadership
in which each member of the Politburo Standing Committee took charge of a particular policy or institution and guided it without much interference from other senior officials
This model does not produce leadership sufficiently decisive to satisfy Xi and his supporters
So Xi has sidelined the other members of the Politburo Standing Committee
except for the propaganda chief Liu Yunshan and the anticorruption watchdog Wang Qishan
He has taken the chairmanship of the most important seven of the twenty-two “leading small groups” that guide policy in specific areas
These include the newly established Central Leading Group for Comprehensively Deepening Reform
which has removed management of the economy from Premier Li Keqiang
And Xi has created a National Security Council to coordinate internal security affairs
Unlike powerful staff members in recent previous administrations
his aides avoid contact with foreigners and even with officials outside Xi’s personal circle
just as Mao did through his loyal follower Wang Dongxing
leading intellectual and official elites to read his expression as inscrutable and frightening
Xi has followed Mao in the demand for ideological conformity
He has invoked Mao’s “Talks at the Yan’an Forum on Literature and Art” in explaining why cultural and media workers must display “Party character” and serve as the Party’s “throat and tongue,” and has used the resolution that Mao wrote for the Party’s 1929 Gutian Conference to emphasize the importance of Party control of the army
He has warned Party members against “irresponsible talk” (wangyi) and academics against “universal values.” As David Shambaugh reports in his recent book China’s Future:
China is today more repressive than at any time since the post-Tiananmen 1989-1992 period
He seeks neither to upend China nor to turn the clock back to rural communes and the planned economy
it is forbidden to negate either of the “two thirty years”—that is
Mao’s era and then the post-Mao reform period
China must combine Maoist firmness with modernizing reform
the first policy manifesto issued by his regime stated that “markets should play the decisive role in the allocation of resources,” but it has become clear that market forces are intended as a tool to invigorate
the “national champion” state-owned enterprises and state financial institutions that continue to enjoy state patronage and to make up a large part of the economy
Xi understands these as pillars of state power and would never hand control of the economy to enterprises that the Party does not control
Xi wants “rule by law,” but this means using the courts more energetically to carry out political repression and change the bureaucracy’s style of work
not in order to create Western-style academic freedom but to bring academics and students to heel (including those studying abroad)
He has launched a thorough reorganization of the military
which is intended partly to make it more effective in battle
but also to reaffirm its loyalty to the Party and to him personally
The overarching purpose of reform is to keep the Chinese Communist Party in power
Xi’s stated goal is for China to achieve “a moderately prosperous society” (xiaokang shehui) by the hundredth anniversary of the Party’s founding in 2021
and “a socialist modernized society” (shehuizhuyi xiandaihua shehui) by the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the P.R.C
The goal for 2049 is said to imply a per capita GDP of U.S.$30,000
and Chinese planners estimate that if it is achieved China will produce over 30 percent of the world’s GDP in that year
about one and a half times more than the proportion currently produced by the United States
That would generate a great deal of global power
Xi will not hesitate to strike back if he believes the country’s “core interests” around its periphery are at stake
but his priorities are fundamentally domestic
Xi has made himself in some ways more powerful than Deng or even Mao
Deng had the final word on difficult policy issues
but he strove to avoid involvement in day-to-day policy
and when forced to make big decisions he first sought consensus among a small group of senior leaders
Mao was able to take any decision he wanted regardless of the will of his senior colleagues
but he paid attention to only a few issues at a time
Xi appears to be running the whole span of important policies on a daily basis
without needing to consult senior colleagues or retired elders
There are hints that he will seek to break the recently established norm of two five-year terms in office and serve one or even more extra terms
He has had himself designated as the “core” of the leadership
At this point in a leader’s first term we would expect to see one or two younger politicians emerging as potential heirs apparent
to be anointed at next year’s nineteenth Party Congress
One of the rumors circulating in Beijing is that teams of editors are compiling a book of Xi’s “thought” (sixiang)
which would place him on a level with Mao as a contributor to Sino-Marxist theory
a status not claimed by any of Mao’s other successors to date
Xi’s concentration of power poses great dangers for China
“On the Reform of the System of Party and State Leadership,” delivered on August 18
Over-concentration of power is liable to give rise to arbitrary rule by individuals at the expense of collective leadership
and it is an important cause of bureaucracy under the present circumstances…
If a person holds too many posts at the same time
he will find it difficult to come to grips with the problems in his work and
he will block the way for other more suitable comrades to take up leading posts
It was to avoid these problems that Deng built a system of tacit norms by which senior leaders were limited to two terms in office
members of the Politburo Standing Committee divided leadership roles among themselves
and the senior leader made decisions in consultation with other leaders and retired elders
Xi is hanging the survival of the regime on his ability to bear an enormous workload and not make big mistakes
He seems to be scaring the mass media and officials outside his immediate circle from telling him the truth
He is trying to bottle up a growing diversity of social and intellectual forces that are bound to grow stronger
the consensus about China’s path of development among economic and intellectual elites and within the political leadership
By directing corruption prosecutions at a retired Politburo Standing Committee member
and retainers of other retired senior officials
he has broken the rule that retired leaders are safe once they leave office
throwing into question whether it can ever be safe for him to leave office
he risks undermining the adaptability and resilience that Deng’s reforms painstakingly created for the post-Mao regime
As the members of the red aristocracy around Xi circle their wagons to protect the regime
some citizens retreat into religious observance or private consumption
others send their money and children abroad
and a sense of impending crisis pervades society
No wonder Xi’s regime behaves as if it faces an existential threat
Given the power and resources that he commands
it would be reckless to predict that his attempt to consolidate authoritarian rule will fail
But the attempt risks creating the very political crisis that it seeks to prevent

So it’s natural for us to do this series.”

If you’re not able to make it to the West Coast for this first Women in Food series, keep your fingers crossed, because Crenn says she’s interested in bringing it to other cities. “If they invite me somewhere else, I would love to,” notes the chef, who is also busy prepping her next spot, Bar Crenn, to open next month. “I think this is a great message. We are in a time right now that needs to be looked at and rebalanced. It’s not about women having more power than men; it’s just about balance.”

and Resy are pivoting to keep themselves — and restaurants — afloat in a world without bookings
The pair had worked in restaurants in New York
and Austin before returning to Daisy’s hometown
The couple had several choices when it came to online reservation booking platforms and ultimately went with Tock
“I didn’t want to have people sitting at the bar and listen to me explain something that someone can find on the internet,” says Gregory Ryan
“I didn’t want that to ruin someone’s experience.” During a typical dinner service pre-COVID-19
about 80 percent of guests had reservations
in a small town near California’s central coast wine country
Bell’s wasn’t beholden to the early occupancy reduction mandates
that happened so quickly in major cities like New York and San Francisco in response to the spread of COVID-19
“It wasn’t until the second week of March that we knew something was on its way — but we didn’t know what it looked like yet,” Gregory Ryan says
He tried to figure out a way to use Tock to accommodate takeout instead of reservations and events in an effort to stay open
the restaurant didn’t ever offer takeout before
“Not because we think we’re too good for it
“Because we only have two [chefs] on the line.”
But before he could figure out a technical solution on his own
Tock contacted him offering a new online ordering system he could implement quickly
am I going to have to get a phone?’ My staff was like
“We opened a restaurant for certain reasons,” he says
He didn’t ever expect takeout to be his business’s lifeline
Since the spread of COVID-19 began forcing restaurants across the country to cease dining room operations
there’s been much talk about its effect on both individual restaurants and the industry as a whole
But what about the industries that support it
and make their money by charging restaurants to use the software
and restaurants also use them to manage their dining rooms’ floor plan and record notes about customers
It’s how the host knows where to seat you when you show up for your 8 p.m
but a restaurant can expect to pay at least several hundred dollars per month for a basic plan that includes both reservations and table management
Prices go up from there depending on additional features like custom messaging
the number of people it brings in the door
OpenTable collects a per-diner commission fee on each reservation it facilitates
and busy restaurants can expect a monthly bill that easily stretches into thousands of dollars
based on a representative sample of around 20,000 of the roughly 60,0000 restaurants the company supports worldwide
That is: There were essentially zero reservations booked
OpenTable and its competitors have been forced to pivot as quickly as the restaurants they serve
All fairly quickly suspended most fees they charge restaurants to use their software
They’ve also proactively begun making changes to their apps and website to reflect the realities of the restaurant business today
offering both temporary and permanent solutions for restaurants that saw their operations upended overnight
OpenTable added a grocery feature
allowing shoppers to reserve a shopping time slot at a store the same way they’d book a seating time at a restaurant
the idea came from an OpenTable advisory board member — a restaurateur himself — who noticed that many restaurants were operating as small grocers to stay open
just a handful of businesses offer the service
but Johnston says the company is actively onboarding several large regional grocery chains
She confirmed that the service is free for all grocery stores and restaurants-turned-grocers
whether or not they’ve worked with OpenTable in the past
Johnston says she’s also encouraging partner restaurants to update their profiles to reflect current operations
which are then displayed in the OpenTable app
The company is waiving gift card fees through June; previously
restaurants paid $25 per month to sell gift cards through the OpenTable system
And at this point more than 1,500 restaurants have added their fundraising efforts to their listings
OpenTable had already added a delivery category to its app in 2019. Listings are in partnership with companies like Uber Eats and Caviar, which each charge their own fees on top of the booking service
clicks on delivery options within the app have grown 172 percent
“It has been nice to see that for the most part they’ve been doing what they can to support us — obviously knowing that supporting us supports them in the long run,” says Gina Buck
a small Brooklyn restaurant that uses OpenTable
serving food and cocktails seven days per week from noon until 10 p.m
Speaking from the middle of her new busy workday fielding
Buck says she isn’t sure what more reservations services could offer to help
“I think the normal before this has completely died and will never exist again,” she says
It’s just two of us — we can’t afford to bring anyone else in at the moment
OpenTable competitor Resy has also shifted its strategy to support eating at home
diners can order takeout food directly through its app and website
one of the handful of restaurants in San Francisco that’s currently offering takeout via Resy
but there’s not much volume in it,” he says
noting that they’ve sold “a few meals” through the platform
He also signed up with Uber Eats and DoorDash for the first time
but says most customers just call orders in to the restaurant directly
it’s communicated to the restaurant the same way a reservation would be: in an app that’s meant for a front-of-house staffer to manage
Lutes was recently surprised by a customer who showed up at the restaurant to pick up a family meal he had only just ordered
he plans to continue offering takeout through Resy
and isn’t worried about accepting orders from multiple sources
“We need all the revenue we can get,” he says
Resy has also modified the format of the restaurant pages on its website to allow operators to link to outside initiatives
“It’s so that customers can see all of the preferred ways that their favorite restaurants are asking for support,” says Resy co-founder and CEO Ben Leventhal
While all the big booking services have adjusted their functionality to meet the moment, reservations and event ticketing service Tock, used by more than 3,000 restaurants worldwide, went a step further, building out an entirely new product — in a week. Tock To Go launched March 16 for existing and new Tock customers
It allows customers to reserve and purchase restaurant meals for pickup or delivery and charges the restaurant a fee of 3 percent per order
(Tock has waived its regular monthly fees.) “We cannot operate without doing that,” says Nick Kokonas
who’s also the co-owner of Chicago’s Alinea Group restaurants
Tock’s To Go system has allowed restaurants to sell completely new, exclusive-to-takeout offerings, something that’s proven useful for the kind of fine dining and higher-end establishments that Tock has become known for. In New York, Dan Barber’s Blue Hill restaurants are offering takeaway boxes of various goods at both the Manhattan and Tarrytown locations
Customers can select from a variety of options
and even a sommelier-selected bottle of wine to accompany a diner’s selections
In San Francisco, Tosca Cafe recently reopened under new ownership in the midst of the pandemic by selling family-style dinners — shrimp alfredo
sister restaurants Bestia and Bavel are both offering weekly changing menus that have sold out within days of being listed on Tock
Proceeds go to maintain employee health care
and chef-owner Ori Menashe says if demand remains high
he may even be able to re-hire some staff to keep up
Kokonas says that Tock currently supports close to 400 restaurants offering takeout across the U.S.
with another 650 in some stage of onboarding
the company already processes nearly $1 million in to-go sales per day
restaurants on the platform sold 11,700 orders for nearly 40,000 meals
“Tock is not just a booking system,” says Kokonas
to the largest networks — search and social media.”
At Bell’s, Gregory Ryan uses social channels to promote the restaurant’s current offerings on Tock To Go
including kits for making the restaurant’s popular egg salad sandwich at home
Ryan likes that Tock’s system of pre-ordering gives restaurant staff some idea of what to expect each day
It also helps him know how much of which ingredients and supplies to purchase
because you’re never really sure when something’s going to come,” he says
“But if you’re able to wake up in the morning and know
and an egg salad,’ you’re at least working toward something
As those continue to populate [throughout the day] you’re a little bit better able to handle the information.”
He’s also happy that it’s allowed him to continue to keep 11 of his employees on payroll
though he says everyone has taken “a little bit of a haircut” on their paychecks
(Ryan and his wife stopped paying themselves completely.)
not all booking platforms are pivoting as gracefully
Yelp is the only major reservations provider to announce a reduction in staff
laying off or furloughing 2,100 of its approximately 6,000 employees
anything related to a layoff would be “an absolute last resort.” At Tock
“The only tricky part to bringing on new employees is training..
executives at reservations companies are asking the same questions as chefs and restaurateurs: How long will this last
Will anyone even want to come and sit down for a meal in a few weeks
“Restaurants are going to reopen at some point with occupancy restrictions
“Yet — and this is very important — the fixed costs of rent and utilities remain the same
and the business model was built with high demand in mind.”
Leventhal indicates that Resy would likely continue to support its expanded initiatives in the future
but stops short of confirming any product changes
“This is without a doubt a reset moment for the industry,” he says
and creativity are going to be crucial for restaurants
Tock To Go is now a permanent part of Tock’s functionality moving forward
built directly into the product’s dashboard
It’s an acknowledgement that the industry isn’t going to go back to “normal” anytime soon
and much about the future of the industry is unknown
“Will there be a market for $35 takeout meals in 2022
Johnston says the company will continue to offer new options as long as restaurants need them
“I hope that the world won’t continue to need a product that supports grocery store reservations,” she says
“but we will keep it free and available as long as necessary.”

but is no longer involved in its operations

Managing a restaurant is a fast-paced and fulfilling job where owners wear many hats
Restaurant owners and managers have to handle the traditional front of house issues like table management and no-shows
managers and operators have to be software masters as well
You have to pick which system is best for point of sale
This often leads to a buyer’s dilemma: Which is the best restaurant software
what’s the difference between Yelp vs
let’s dive in and have a look at the two systems—what makes them tick
Both Yelp for Restaurants and Resy help restaurants manage plenty of aspects of their business—but they do it differently
Yelp offers three robust services for restaurants:
Yelp for Restaurants’s Standard package offers two-way messaging
The Plus package offers all that plus a top-notch reservation management system
The Plus system integrates Yelp Waitlist and Reservations in one tool
you’ll have full support from Yelp to get you on board with the help of a dedicated success manager
and automated wait time updates to help reduce the impact of no-shows or hungry customers abandoning their spot in line
The POS system also keeps track of guest info—things like birthdays
and even food preferences—to make guests feel fully appreciated
The pricing system has flat rates that work like this:
Yelp Connect is an additional feature that starts at $180 a month
and comes with a business page upgrade worth $120 when you sign up
As a neat bonus to Yelp’s FOH software suite, Yelp for Restaurants offers the necessary hardware at no additional cost
which can help restaurants save on up-front costs
Considering that a new iPad costs at minimum $329 for the most basic model
this is actually a pretty significant bonus
You can also use the iPad to help set up Yelp Kiosk
Kiosk collects guest information and estimates accurate wait times
and answers questions that hosts would typically answer
Resy offers a systemic operating system (OS) that’s designed to help manage all aspects of a restaurant
and table management as well as “Resy At Home Culinary Experiences,” which gives restaurants flexibility in customizing services for customers
You could create ticketed online cooking lessons
Higher tiers from ResyOS offer management features all the way from POS integration and customizable customer messaging to inventory management
Customers can book tables from either the Resy app or through their website
and can choose their preferred seating location as well
their information is shared across all linked platforms
so servers and managers have info readily available from returning customers
Resy lets you track customer preferences so that servers can easily remember favorite drinks and dishes of their regulars
Resy’s reservation and waitlist service offer automatic SMS messaging to confirm reservations and let guests know when a spot on the waitlist has opened up
A similar process takes place inside: The program can automatically assign guests to servers based on current workload
Do note you only get customizable guest messaging and POS integration starting with the Pro plan
But with this plan you also get one-on-one onboarding and training on the product from the Resy team
all Yelp for Restaurants plans come with one-on-one onboarding
they offer what they call “self-serve onboarding,” which means you’ll essentially need to train yourself to use the program
restaurants can give customers a customizable survey after the meal
Analytics and guest info are stored for easy access afterwards
The Pro plan allows for two customized data and analytics reports per year
whereas the Enterprise version allows for unlimited reports
The Pro plan also allows third-party reviews to appear on your restaurant’s page
It also allows for third-party pre-payment options
the Pro plan offers significantly more options than the Basic plan
There’s a lot more room for flexibility with that plan
but it’s up to restaurateurs to decide if they would actually use those services or if they’d be superfluous
Oh, and one more thing in favor of both services: Do note that neither Yelp for Restaurants nor Resy charges per cover, as opposed to simpler reservation systems like OpenTable
One of the functions of each platform is to work as a restaurant reservation system
a reservation platform helps potential customers make online reservations at local restaurants—or even not-so-local
if people want to plan in advance for a trip
Both Yelp and Resy allow guests to add themselves to waitlists via their mobile app
Resy only allows 1-4 guests per party on their waitlist
whereas Yelp allows parties of six or more
Both apps allow parties to choose their seating preference
Resy also has restrictions on how close a customer has to be to the restaurant to add themselves to a waitlist
The distance limit varies by city—for example
1 mile in New York and Philadelphia or 5 miles in Austin or Seattle
and diners can add themselves to a waitlist either via the Yelp Waitlist app or via Yelp.com
customers add their expected arrival time and their party size—and voila
A solid end-user app is crucial for any integrated system to work for your restaurant
but there are some significant differences between them
Restaurant owners know the impact reviews can have on businesses
and sometimes reviews just don’t go the right way
the reviews of Resy’s Android app average just 1 star
Reviewers mention the glitchy user interface and the inability to search for restaurants
which means you lose out on their business
Yelp’s Android app
A common complaint from users is they were prompted to download the app when they were on the mobile site
Resy and Yelp’s app functionality for the user are drastically different
Resy focuses on reservations and waitlists in their end user app
displaying local partner restaurants in many major metropolitan areas across the world
Guests will enter a phone number and choose their party size
and the web app has some robust and interesting features—including searching for Resy staff favorites
though not all restaurants will accept reservations for more than a few weeks in the future
While Resy does show reviews based on a star system
Resy does provide information in the “About” and “Need to know” sections
as well as an occasional “Why we like it” section
Restaurants can provide examples of their menu in “Menu highlights” but users will have to find the restaurant site to get a full view of the menu
Their search function works well but can demonstrate a fairly narrow reach
The web app only returned seven Mexican restaurants in Austin
and users may feel like they’re missing out on some vital information
you can use Resy’s web or mobile apps to make reservations
or book delivery via a link to third-party apps
But user interactions with the restaurant via the app are limited
Yelp’s end user app is far more than a one-trick pony
customers can make restaurant reservations and get on waitlists locally
They can also further engage with restaurants in many other ways: order takeout or delivery right on the app
Users can help the app get to know them and their preferences as well
Users who have added themselves to a waitlist will receive updates on their wait time using a sophisticated algorithm
Cancellations will automatically bump people up in the list
Customers can also filter results in a number of different ways to find exactly what they’re looking for
Yelp has far more filtration options than Resy
which will help customers hunt down exactly the kind of venue they’re looking for
And if customers are just looking for a phone number or an address
The Yelp app is really a one-stop shop for hungry customers
Yelp has been around for a while and has been able to expand to just about every corner of the country
as well as into many sectors outside of the restaurant business
Yelp reviews are well-known (and sometimes notorious) indicators of the direction a business is going
There’s a good reason for this: Yelp’s user base is enormous
they’re still largely limited to major metropolitan areas—80 of them as of this writing
Customers trying to use their online reservation system in smaller towns or less trendy cities may not find as many options as they might like
and there are far fewer reviews on Resy than on Yelp
One major difference between the way restaurants appear will be immediately obvious: Yelp reviews will be clearly indicated for each restaurant
For restaurants with below-average reviews
having those reviews so publicly displayed may not be a favorite feature
provides customers with a curated list of restaurants in their area
Some customers and restaurant owners seem unhappy with this arrangement
as it means even restaurants who are partners with Resy may not appear on an end user’s app
Delivery and takeout orders are absolutely crucial for both the restaurant industry and for hungry diners
Resy and Yelp for Restaurants both offer ways to connect with restaurants for these options
Resy curates lists of restaurants in select metropolitan areas and suggests them for takeout or third-party delivery options
They sometimes partner with restaurants to offer unique takeout options
but a significant takeaway is this: As of now
You can order takeout that you’ll go and pick up
but Resy is not integrated with third-party delivery operators
They’ll provide you with the information on which restaurants are good for delivery
but you’ll have to use another app to actually order your food
partners directly with online ordering and CRM platforms like Olo and Punchh
and partners with delivery companies like Grubhub
Restaurants who partner with Yelp get the benefit of these additional partnerships
All users need to do is push a few buttons in the Yelp app and delivery shows up at their doorstep
If a hungry person is simply looking to make a reservation in a restaurant or put themselves on a waitlist
But they have to be a group of less than four in a supported major metropolitan area and within a predetermined distance from a restaurant
Resy will curate which restaurants you’ll see
so if users are unsure of what they want to eat anyway this can be a valuable choice
as long as that person doesn’t want to use their app to get delivery
and personal choice may prefer the Yelp app
which means you’ll want to meet them there
This is especially true for those looking to plan ahead or order delivery
There’s also plenty of information available on restaurants on the Yelp app
If you’re a restaurateur looking to get more customers to reserve tables, make your FOH system more robust, or even increase your sales with email marketing, Yelp has a way to help. If you choose Yelp for Restaurants over Resy, request a demo here
