There is indeed a twinkle in his eye when he speaks and he seems happy with a quote from his business past in which he said he loves people and numbers "I always say football is a people's business as we don't have any factory or production so it's really the peoples' business and the connection there is important," he said When he started in the football industry six years ago Carro concedes he didn't just follow the football decision-maker crowd with his public utterances about potential success "Bayer 04 was consistently on a good level but we were missing the trophies, so when I came to Leverkusen I realised the desire to win titles was important," he said. "I said I would prefer to win the DFB-Pokal than to be part of the Champions League "On numbers, you should wish to be in the Champions League, where you could earn €25 million to €30m. In the Pokal, you might only get €5m or €6m, but you have that trophy. I said we have the potential to strive for No. 1, not every year, but one year to beat Bayern Munich I said this in my beginning interview and (then sporting CEO) Rudi Völler said Carro has been reminded of his outspoken ambition by colleagues in the football world and Fernando Carro are two of the three architects of Bayer Leverkusen's unprecedented success in 2023-24 Bayer Leverkusen"They've told me but we thought you were crazy,' because I was saying very openly in meetings with other clubs: I want to become champion." Leverkusen have been richly praised for their astonishing 2023-24 season the first ever unbeaten domestic campaign by a Bundesliga club and just a point off the best points total recorded in a single campaign Carro is already eagerly looking forward to the Ballon d'Or Club of the Year award "My impression is, it will be either Real Madrid or us, so if we win this, we will have the recognition," he said. "If Madrid wins, then we still feel rewarded, because our season was amazing: finalists in the Europa League 90 points and unbeaten in the league and winning the Pokal It has been nearly two years since Carro went on the weekly Sport 1 TV panel show "Doppelpass" in front of a live studio audience and with Leverkusen struggling under then-coach Gerardo Seoane was asked about the possibility of a coaching change Carro used the famous words "wir sind gut vorbereitet" ("we are well prepared") Sign up for ESPN+ No one outside Leverkusen at that time knew the preparation would lead to hiring of his compatriot Xabi Alonso but Carro and highly respected sporting CEO Simon Rolfes had crossed paths with the urbane former midfielder in the months prior it can mean you need a coach in two years or one month and Simon is always preparing a list of coaches and this is something which is professional." The rest is now German football history, but whereas most didn't necessarily believe a Bundesliga title was likely until the early part of 2024 with last-gasp victories at FC Augsburg and RB Leipzig and then the convincing 3-0 win over Bayern Carro was convinced as early as Matchday 2 "'If we play like this every game, no one can beat us,' I thought," Carro said of his reaction to the 3-0 triumph at Borussia Monchengladbach in August 2023 Alonso rightly gets the credit for bringing a certain aura to the Rheinland but Carro believes the fit also has to do with Rolfes Both were midfielders who played the same position," Carro said "What convinced me was Xabi's analytical skills so I had the impression he always wanted to learn His ability to take his experiences as a player and put them into his role as a coach Thanks to the 2023-24 Unbesiegbaren (Unbeatables) plans are afoot for Leverkusen to run similar trophy tours in Brazil and perhaps Mexico Carro sees the club already well ahead of most other Bundesliga rivals in terms of international penetration Bayer Leverkusen celebrated the first unbeaten domestic season in German football history in 2023-24. Bayer Leverkusen"We have the third-best reach among Bundesliga clubs after Bayern and Borussia Dortmund," he said it has gone to another level because of last season Carro has missed only three Bayer 04 games in six years, and so flying back across the Atlantic after a whirlwind 48 hours to go straight to the Kraichgau region and witness Leverkusen's 4-1 win at TSG Hoffenheim was a priority the club arranged a special watch party around the game for Leverkusen fans old and new in a Brooklyn biergarten The Bundesliga will not be doing what LaLiga clubs are considering in potentially taking league games to the U.S It's simply incongruous in a culture where football is for local communities first and foremost and everyone attached to the German game knows this But Carro did offer hope to Leverkusen and other Bundesliga fans Stateside that perhaps the DFL-Supercup it would be possible to have the Supercup in the USA or another country," Carro said "Many fans don't like it anyway with it being the same weekend as the first Pokal round Thinking differently has become one of Carro's hallmarks in German football KXAN Austin community and Chicano culture in Texas lowriding Mercedes Mata’s 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo sits on display at the "Carros y Cultura: Lowriding Legacies" exhibit in Texas exhibit during the opening reception at the Bullock Texas State History Museum Chuy Martinez’s sparkling blue 1975 Monte Carlo with multicolor stripes has been with him since he was 17 by working jobs with his dad’s plumbing company he laughs – there’s a lot of detail to go through: from the paint job to the chrome-engraved 24k gold plating on not just the bumpers but to the specially-made one-of-a-kind hydraulics system that allows the lowrider to go up and down that’s the Mexican culture,” Martinez said keeping your culture – that makes you feel good and I’m proud of it I’m proud and glad to have my car here in a museum.” Chuy Martinez’s 1975 Chevy Monte Carlo Martinez founded Brown Impressions Lowrider Car Club of Laredo and it’s been going for 45 years since he bought The Blue Monte is in the Lowrider Hall of Fame and has 17 chapters crossing not just state lines Not only is there a chapter in Nuevo Laredo across the Rio Grande but there’s also a chapter across the Pacific Ocean in Japan The “Lowriding Legacies” part of the exhibit name is not an exaggeration One of Austin’s first lowriders was John Colunga I call it ‘One Bad ’67,’ but everybody nowadays calls it a legend,” Colunga said “August the 28th the museum’s supposed to have a birthday party for my car because I’ll have it for 46 years So I’m looking forward to having cake for the car.” One Bad ’67 is sparkling green and has two murals: La Virgen de Guadalupe on the trunk and a guardian angel on the hood watching over two children as they cross a bridge Its an homage to a portrait that was on the headboard of Colunga’s childhood bed where he and his brother slept The car holds a special place in Colunga’s heart and although he says being part of the museum exhibit is an honor “I told my wife I gotta go see it like every other two days because I missed being in the garage and it’s the first time I’m gonna be without it for four months being here So I’m gonna miss it a lot,” he said Robert Rodriguez poses with his 1985 Ford F-150 at the "Carros y Cultura" exhibit opening reception a support organization that promotes the lowrider community and spreads awareness of the lifestyle It’s something senior curator Kathryn Siefker thought about when talking with folks from the lowriding community about putting together the exhibit And so it was a lot of interviewing people,” Siefker said “It was a lot of spending weekends at lowrider events and they answered all my millions of questions and explained lowriding to me and welcomed me into their homes and making sure they felt confident giving us their cars for four months.” Siefker says Bullock is devoted to telling everyone’s stories and “Carros y Cultura” begins to bring that ethos forward “This story hasn’t had to be told on this scale and at the state history museum I think adds a level of appreciation to what they bring to Texas history and Texas culture,” she said » GET MORE NEWS FROM AROUND THE STATE: Sign up for Texas Standard’s weekly newsletters Clint Westwood is a journalist for La Prensa Texas in San Antonio He was one of the advisors for the exhibit and covered the lowriding community for years “It’s feels very good, uh me siento muy … excited,” he laughs, quoting from the movie “Selena.” it is kind of surreal,” he continued “It’s kind of still sinking in I never thought our culture would be highlighted this much on a main stage And being able to highlight the Latino and the lowriding culture to a wider range of audiences I think it’s a beautiful thing.” Lowrider car clubs are not just about the bumping hydraulics and sparkling paint jobs The clubs are known for bringing the community together raising money for different nonprofit organizations “I would write my articles on the lowriding familia the story of a car that gets passed through generation to generation The bond that families have together working on a vehicle the detail… It’s taking pride in what we have.” Those bonds are strong and lowriders are often born into it it catches everyone’s attention,” she said The 20-year-old from Dallas graduated high school early at 16 and knew she wanted to build cars just like her dad “I was tired of being in the back seat.” but you gotta put your own money into it to fix it up.’ So that’s what I did,” Mata said There’s also sixteen-year-old Issac Morales and his lowrider bicycle He and his grandmother named it “The Last Prayer” and religious iconography adorns the shimmering blood red-wine finish “I picked that color because of the way they say ‘the blood of wine is the blood of the Lord,” he said “One of the sides has the Virgin Mary The other side has Jesus with the cross with the thorn crown it has the sacred heart and the prayer hands.”  He and his grandmother would spend time going to church His grandmother wanted him to become an altar boy but before he could So Morales decided they could work on the bike together and she would be the inspiration.   I want you to be a part of it.’ Because we both loved it,” Morales said “So me and her decided to come up with the names and details and everything I’m happy that I built it with her.” Sort of like the memento Trampia Guzman’s grandmother left to the cultura when she passed: curtains.  He’s the owner and operator of Cultura Boulevard Clothing in Austin Guzman asked for those memorable gold curtains and initially didn’t know what he was going to do with them I’m going to honor my grandmother by making a zoot suit reminiscent of the ’30s and ’40s era And I’m going to wear it,” Guzman said The gold zoot suit quickly became iconic within the community It is now on display in the museum along with a sharp black and white zoot suit he tailor-made for his wife.  Trampia Guzman poses in front of two zoot suits he made that are on display at the "Carros y Cultura" exhibit contrasting vastly with the zoot suit’s checkered past Hispanics were actually kind of frowned upon for wearing zoot suits – wearing the oversized zoot suits 40-inch at the knee and the 10-inch cuffs,” Guzman said they were considered hoodlums back in the day.” Guzman says it’s taken a huge leap forward “with people actually embracing the culture More modern cholo apparel is also highlighted in the exhibit as well one style of shoe iconic to the chicano community – the Nike Cortez.  The special lowrider edition is made with material normally used in the interior of a classic car. The design was a collaboration with influential Chicano artist Mister Cartoon and the pair was provided to the museum by community historian Enrique Navarette.  “I curate and collect a lot of memorabilia – art anything that has ties to our culture,” he said “I felt like it’s important to curate and collect all this stuff People photograph Arturo Dehoyos’ 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme which features a mural of Mexican ranchera singer Vicente Fernandez at the "Carros y Cultura" opening reception and it’s hard to put that into numbers A 2013 study done on knowledge loss within indigenous societies laments that “there are no estimates of the rate at which the specific cultural traits of a group disappear,” but it leads to what many in marginalized communities already know – it’s usually up to them to be their own historians passing along the traditions to the next generation.  Like to 8-year-old Sanoma Stewart from San Antonio It’s sort of like the one driven by the infamous Bonnie and Clyde except its a lowrider so it’s got the bling.  “I know it’s a ’39 Chevrolet,” she says The cars and the culture surrounding it is already a family affair and a big part of personal histories But with this exhibit is an official acknowledgement from the state that Chicano car culture is significant to Texas history and not to be forgotten If you found the reporting above valuable, please consider making a donation to support it here. Bullock exhibit estimates the subculture arrived in Texas about 20 years later But what’s ever halted the emergence of a distinctly Texan arch to anything “Carros y Cultura” features an orange-and-white Whataburger lowriding bicycle adorned with a chromed “Flying W,” “No tomato”-labeled pedals the shiny golden french fries and an upholstered banana seat that opens to reveal a you a full list of every car in Initial D - plus our top 10 picks Todo School is introduced to us in Initial D’s Fourth Stage a place for up-and-coming mountain racers to learn the trade The crown jewel of its exclusively Honda fleet is an EK9 Type R used as its demonstration car though considered a monster by many students due to its sheer power it’s equipped with a Spoon Sports-tuned B16B making 197bhp We see it in action against the Fujiwara Tofu Shop AE86 early in Project D’s quest to conquer every mountain road in Japan with Todo School graduate Tomoyuki Tachi pulling a sensational hairpin overtake on Fujiwara Takumi debuts a new technique - Blind Attack - switching off his AE86’s headlights to disappear into the darkness before slinging it up the inside of the EK9 It’s the last time we see a Civic in Initial D Before the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R burst into Initial D Takumi’s opposition had only been lightweight the introduction of Godzilla itself is a seismic one Serving as Takumi’s introduction to all-wheel-drive racers NightKids leader Nakazato’s R32 is one of the most menacing in the whole series with upgrades pretty much limited to a Nismo front bumper On a mission to prove drifting is for show and not for speed Nakazato challenges Takumi to a battle on Akina Despite holding the lead for much of their race allowing Takumi and the ‘86 an easy passage through to win Directly after Nakazato’s defeat to Takumi NightKids driver Shingo Shoji decides he needs to beat Takumi to prove himself as the best driver in the street racing team.  but some serious modifications are made - including a new ECU an increased compression ratio and a lightweight flywheel Shoji challenges Fujiwara to a ‘duct tape deathmatch’ - requiring them to control the car with just one hand Shoji tries to get dirty - but his attempt at a wreck ends up with putting himself into a guardrail Introduced at the very beginning of Initial D Iketani’s super-clean S13 is something to appreciate Before we even find out Takumi has been driving the AE86 along Akina for years we’re led to believe a passenger ride in Iketani’s Nissan is his first taste of mountain racing - naturally ending in a pile of vomit The lime green two-tone Silvia gets a few tasteful mods - including Silvia K aero parts and a set of SSR Mark II wheels - soon swapped out for a set of Nismo LM GT2 wheels and then again for LM GT1s later in the series Beating out Iketani’s S13 though is the one driven by his love interest We’re introduced to Sato’s Sileighty towards the end of First Stage - the show’s first series - along with co-driver known together as ‘Impact Blue’ after their RPS13’s colour Few changes are made to the Sileighty - though itself a wicked mash-up of the S13’s front end paired with a 180SX’s rear - but subtle mods include a B-Wave rear spoiler plus a lovely set of gold Rays Volk Mesh wheels Sato and Sayuki’s race against Takumi is an epic one but the real heartbreak is Iketani initially standing Sato up for a date - and arriving too late after changing his mind Mitsubishi Evos are a common sight in Initial D but our first experience comes in Second Stage - with team Emperor’s leader Sudo and his Evo III Following another Emperor driver’s defeat to Takumi (Seji and his Evo IV shout-out for him cutting up the stickers of teams he’s beaten and putting them on his car’s spoiler) Sudo brings out his big guns to put the AE86 in its place Upgrades include include an anti-lag system a boost controller and an improved turbine housing for the turbocharger Sudo manages to beat Takumi - a rare feat - though only because his ‘86s engine blows up with Takumi driving the reworked Trueno and winning a tight battle Keisuke Takahashi is one of the top guns in Akagi RedSuns Being the first man to go on a hunt for Akina’s AE86, Takahashi’s FD Mazda RX-7 immediately hits as a stand-out in the series and undergoes one of the biggest transformations of any car throughout there’s something new almost every time we see it - eventually winding up with a full RE Amemiya bodykit with all the carbon fibre trimmings and 335bhp from its twin-rotor 13B That honour goes to his brother Ryosuke and his FC this RX-7 remains pretty subdued at the start with only subtle modifications made - though expertly piloted by RedSuns leader Takahashi This suffices for Ryosuke’s mission statement of the RedSuns setting records on every course in the Kanto Plain region Ryosuke is beaten and decides to retire from racing and instead watch from the sidelines He does eventually overhaul his FC for Project D do uses the bewinged RX-7 to sight out courses ahead of the team’s races There’s no introduction needed for this AE86 Without the Fujiwara Tofu Shop delivery car Despite having no care for racing at the start it’s the AE86 and Takumi that earn the title of ‘Ghost of Akina’ from Fujiwara’s skilful late-night tofu runs - something he’d been doing since just 13 years of age The first major upgrade comes after the original engine blows up during Takumi’s showdown with Sudo and his Evo which is swapped out for a TRD Group A-spec 4A-GE over time the Trueno gains new brakes and a carbon fibre bonnet The AE86 does meet an untimely end in its final race (appropriately against another hot shot in a Trueno) Prices for the real thing have skyrocketed since Initial D took the car world by storm but we don’t think it’s the coolest in the whole series… The top honour goes to the choice of Bunta Fujiwara and arguably the coolest character in the whole series Once Takumi gets serious about his downhill racing and takes the ‘Hachiroku’ effectively as his own old man Fujiwara decides to find himself a new set of wheels He finds himself with the keys to a Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R for a test drive and ends up in an impromptu race against his own son on Mount Akina Without Takumi realising who was behind the wheel he eventually loses to the Impreza - sealing Bunta’s decision to buy it the Impreza remains practically stock - with the exception of a custom exhaust It pinches top spot from the Trueno AE86 in our eyes as he borrows it for a few dates in the series… Takumi’s best friend is probably the biggest AE86 fanboy out there and channels every one of us through his anger at Fujiwara’s early ignorance of the car Itsuki does eventually muster up enough yen to buy the Levin of his dreams - only to realise later he’s bought an AE85 with the weedy 3A-U engine - producing about 79bhp he does eventually buy himself a turbo kit for the 85 - almost doubling its power and bringing everyone’s favourite lonely driver a small amount of success Honda Civic Type R EK9 - driven by Daiki Ninomiya Spoon Sports Honda Civic Type R EK9 - modified with flashy paint jobs and hydraulic suspension that let drivers change their cars' ride height The modifications aren't meant to make the cars faster; instead these cars are meant to be driven low and slow Kathryn Siefker said she studied lowrider culture before curating the exhibit but the real education came from spending time in the community “Everyone in the lowrider community has been so generous in sharing their time and their knowledge and their expertise and really with trusting us to tell this story,” Siefker said She spent some time attending lowrider car meets all over Austin to get to know the community These gatherings let owners show off their lowriders and share modification tips “Just hanging out with the community for the last eight to 10 months was so much fun," Siefker said Siefker was surprised by the family element of the community Many of the lowriders she talked to have modified their kids' strollers and toy cars with the same sparkly paint jobs and engraved chrome accents as their cars you are part of this larger community and family that’s going to see you through,” Siefker said the exhibit showcases bicycles and pedal-powered toy cars given the full lowrider treatment Siefker said the lowrider community showed up in many ways in the process of creating the exhibit One lowrider couldn’t get a covered trailer to transport a car to the museum from Dallas nicknamed “La Mera Mera,” turned up grimy after a rainy drive down folks from the Austin community showed up at the museum’s loading dock to get La Mera Mera looking its best before being put on display “All these people showed up to help them that they hadn’t met but were now fast friends because they all believed in this cause and what was happening,” Siefker said “Even the logistics have turned out to be a blessing in bringing people together.” The Bullock Museum is celebrating all things lowrider this Sunday with break dancers and activities to teach about A basketball star shows off his unique performance masterpiece. Along... Every Sunday evening, 20-year-old Mercedes Mata would cruise her sparkly pink 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo down Jefferson Boulevard in Oak Cliff and through Downtown Dallas. Her customized lowrider, which she named La Mera Mera, caught the attention of many on the streets of her hometown and even celebrities online. But in November, her car did its last low-and-slow drive down the Dallas pavement. At least for another four months, Mata said, because La Mera Mera is being showcased in a Texas museum exhibition this summer. “It feels unreal,” Mata said. “I never thought it would get this far.” The Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin has put together its first exhibition dedicated to the legacy of Texas lowriders. The exhibition “Carros y Cultura” celebrates lowriders: the Mexican American community’s bouncing old-school cars and the people who ride them. Among the seven Texas lowriders being showcased, Mata is the only woman, the only one from Dallas, and the youngest lowrider in the exhibition. Senior curator Kathryn Siefker said the exhibition shows the relationship between the car and the person behind the wheel, and the relationships those people have with each other and their community. “We’re really trying to highlight the lowrider as a person, as a strong family figure, as a community leader, as an activist,” Siefker said. “The person is the heart of lowriding.” For Mata, spending money and time to build and customize her lowrider isn’t a hobby. This was a lifestyle she was born into. Mata is a member of the Dallas Lowriders, a club founded by her late uncle Ivy in 1979. In 1985, after her uncle’s death, the club disbanded and was inactive until 2003, the year Mata was born. Her father, Mark, became the spokesperson for the Dallas Lowriders, but a year later he was incarcerated. He remained behind bars until Mata and her sister, Mariah, were preteens. “Lowriding helped us connect with him,” Mata said. “It’s a deeper story than just a car.” In the 1940s, lowriding turned into an artistic outlet for self expression and identity within the Mexican American community. It was popular in California and then spread to parts of Texas. Lowrider culture is fueled by community and family support, and Mata’s La Mera Mera is a product of that. “The cars are like an expression of ourselves,” Mata said. “It’s about family and bringing people together – unity.” Mata spent five months taking the La Mera Mera apart and upgrading it for the exhibition. She redid the hydraulic setup, redipped the chrome suspensions, replaced the motor, updated the pink trunk and more. The glittery rose-gold lowrider still has the Dallas Lowriders silver plaque showing in the rear window, but another addition shows the real mera mera.  A candy-pink mural of Mata was painted on the hood of the car. Mata, wearing the popular upside-down Dallas cap, is surrounded by Dallas sights. Some of the images include the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff, the Jefferson Boulevard street sign, the Dallas neon Pegasus icon and the downtown skyline. “Everybody that knows me knows I have a big personality,” Mata said. “I was like, ‘Let’s go all out.’” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Bullock Museum (@bullockmuseum) Along with La Mera Mera, Mata will also showcase personal items in a glass case that includes an original gold Dallas Lowrider plaque, her Dallas Lowrider of the Year award from 2023, and her first steering wheel that was once on her dad’s lowrider from 2003. The rest of the Bullock Museum exhibition will include lowrider bikes, fashion, music, photography and videos. An interactive touchscreen mural will allow visitors to explore the characteristics that make a custom car a lowrider car: hydraulics, upholstery and paint. “It’s pretty cool that the culture itself is getting exposure,” Mata said. “It’s getting what it deserves.” The exhibition opened May 11 and will continue through Sept. 2.  Arts Access is an arts journalism collaboration powered by The Dallas Morning News and KERA. Consideration of inclusivity and the addition of different races in advertisements can bring a feeling of togetherness to the audience especially in a country like Singapore where a myriad of races try to reside in harmony changing one’s skin color and tone of speech to mock a different race in an ad causes the exact opposite effect but some strategies cross the line into sensitive topics like racism JDM Mobile Carros Centre’s recent promotional video for the Toyota Noah 1.8 Hybrid features a salesman with a darkened face the salesman altered his skin color to mimic another race and images used in the video depicted images of African people The name was borrowed from a popular video of an African man with a lengthy name aimed at showcasing the Toyota Noah’s features with the salesman describing how the car can accommodate a family of seven and highlighting perks like the auto tailgate and sports rims the use of brownface in the ad has drawn attention for the wrong reasons shifting focus from the car’s attributes to the problematic portrayal a picture of Native American people pops up for a split second when describing the car as being good for ‘many people.’ The comments regarding this post were mixed as some try to grasp the need for such a way of advertising whilst others claim the company did it for publicity Some share the same sentiments as the original posters Others express their dismay at such incidents still happening in 2024 Singapore has had its share of brownface controversies a commercial featuring a Chinese actor in brownface sparked significant public outcry raising questions about cultural sensitivity in marketing Moreover, a recent occurrence of brownface by a Raffle’s Institution student last month on Racial Harmony Day remains another notable incident of glaring racism apologies were relayed with claims of no harm being intended by the parties involved Portraying oneself as a race that they are not part of essentially mocks the race by using them as a costume White people in the 19th century would paint themselves with dark paint and act like black people for their entertainment thus belittling human beings who are no different than them apart from skin color To have this still be practiced in an era where there are enough resources online to educate oneself on rights and wrongs makes such acts seem even more deliberate While Singapore may not have the same race-related detrimental backgrounds as the West and the intentions may be reported as not being hurtful hiring or employing an actor of color cannot be too difficult in a mixed-race nation Wake Up Singapore has contacted Kenny for comments and will update the story with any response received Indian Doctor Arrested for Allegedly Recording Nude slogan for this event was “No arrestos por No licencias!” which directly translates to “no arrests for no licenses” Dignidad Inmigrante en Athens hosted Caravana de Carros in protest of arrests by Athens-Clarke County police officers of unlicensed drivers Four white participants of the Dignidad Inmigrante en Athens’ “Caravana de Carros,” or a caravan of cars volunteered to serve as marshalls for the group in case any of the 14 participating cars were pulled over by police The marshalls don’t live with the same fear as many immigrants do of arrest for driving without a license The car caravan drove down Atlanta Highway around downtown Athens and to the parking lot across from The Grit on Jan 11 to protest arrests by Athens-Clarke County police officers of unlicensed drivers This was Dignidad’s second “Caravana de Carros.” The first was on July 27 as described by the coordinator of the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition and Dignidad Inmigrante Beto Mendoza “It sends the message that everyone has to drive— to drive from school Athens-Clarke County don’t have a real good transportation system,” Mendoza said The group gathered at Georgia Square Mall at 4 p.m to adorn their cars with signs reading phrases such as “No Ban No Wall,” “No Human is Illegal,” “Migration is Beautiful” and “Change Unjust Laws,” to prepare for their drive The “change unjust laws” sign references Georgia Senate Bill 350 which increased penalties for unlicensed drivers Leanne Purdum of the Athens Immigrants Rights Coalition was one of the 25 members present and said the purpose of the caravan was to call for change within the police force’s standard protocol “What we’re looking for is for the police department to use their discretion to not arrest people for not having a license,” Purdum
