Arsenal won the Champions League in 2007 but have not featured in a final since
Arsenal reached the Champions League final for the first time in 18 years after completing a remarkable fightback to beat eight-time champions Lyon at the Groupama Stadium
The Gunners had it all to do in France after losing the first leg 2-1 at home but
for the second time in this European campaign
Renee Slegers' side mounted a stunning second-leg comeback to seal victory
The reward for their efforts is a first European final since 2007, when they won a historic quadruple, against holders Barcelona who thrashed Chelsea earlier on Sunday
Arsenal's players and staff flooded the pitch at full time
cheering and hugging each other with some visibly emotional at their achievement
It was a stunning performance from an Arsenal side who were at risk of watching their season peter out had they not managed to overturn the deficit
The hosts got off to the worst possible start when a mix-up between Christiane Endler and Lyon's stalwart defender Wendie Renard resulted in the ball pinging off the goalkeeper's back and into the back of the net from a corner after five minutes
Mariona Caldentey then gave Arsenal the lead in the tie when she struck beautifully into the top corner from 20 yards out
It seemed inevitable that European giants Lyon would come back into it in the second half
after what was undoubtedly a stern team-talk from former Arsenal boss Joe Montemurro
who cut a frustrated figure on the touchline
But Alessia Russo took advantage of a loose ball and slotted into the bottom corner after Lyon made a mess of trying to clear it inside the first minute of the second half
Caitlin Foord capped off a memorable afternoon for the Gunners when she lashed into the roof of the net after Vanessa Gilles slipped when trying to play out from the back
Melchie Dumornay rifled in at the near post in the 81st minute
but it proved too little too late for the home side as Arsenal progress to the showpiece on 24 May in Lisbon
'Euphoria' as Arsenal reach first European final in 18 years
Renee Slegers has been in charge of Arsenal since replacing Jonas Eidevall in October
Prospects of an all-English final had been eliminated earlier in the day with Chelsea's demoralising defeat by Barcelona
But Arsenal did not face as big a mountain to climb in the second leg as their London rivals
with a one-goal deficit to overturn rather than Chelsea's three
After successfully dismantling Real Madrid in their second-leg quarter-final comeback
Arsenal were brilliant against a Lyon side who had won all nine of their Champions League matches this campaign
more focussed and more capable of scoring goals
Caldentey dictated play from the middle of the park
her experience as a three-time European champion shining through as she controlled the game as well as providing a threat going forward
At times Lyon were masters of their own downfall
with Kim Little going close before the resulting corner bundled in off Endler's back and Russo and Foord both pounced on some sloppy defensive work for their goals
Daphne van Domselaar barely touched the ball in the first half but made several impressive saves when she needed to
denying Ada Hegerberg from close range and Damaris Egurrola's free header
keeping their cool when Dumornay pulled one back and managing the game effectively to see out a remarkable triumph
Eight-times champions Lyon lost 2-0 to Barcelona in the final last year
both sides knew they were battling for a final against defending champions Barcelona
that meant the potential for revenge against the team they have faced in three Champions League finals
coming out on top in two of them before losing last year's title
they gave the ball away cheaply and made costly errors for the goals
Much of the talk prior to the match had been around their talismanic defender Renard and whether she would be fit enough to play after recovering from a foot injury
but it was a 500th club appearance to forget for the France international
It is the first time Lyon have conceded four goals at home since October 2022
when Arsenal inflicted a 5-1 demolition in the Champions League group stage
The prospect of revenge on their Spanish rivals loomed large and the French side were perhaps guilty of complacency at times against an Arsenal side who had clearly done their homework

Arsenal staged a stunning comeback to beat Lyon 5-3 on aggregate and secure a spot in the Champions League final
Renée Slegers was mentored by Joe Montemurro during a UEFA mentorship programme half a decade ago
she has led Arsenal to a win over his Lyon team to reach the Champions League final
27 Apr 202520.29 CESTCountdown to the final – 27 days to go!
27 Apr 202520.26 CESTEarlier this week, Arsenal captain Kim Little told DAZN: “I’ve played a lot of Champions League games and been to semi-finals, but never a final. So to take this team and club there would be a special moment for everyone, but for me too.”
27 Apr 202520.15 CESTThis
Great trip https://t.co/cOsERp9ESV
27 Apr 202520.10 CESTThere was belief in and around the Arsenal camp that they could complete a turnaround against Lyon today. But I don’t think anyone would have expected such a dominant display and scoreline. Renée Slegers has instilled something special in this Arsenal team. This day will go down in history for the Gunners.
27 Apr 202519.59 CESTArsenal have reached their first Champions League final since 2007
27 Apr 202519.56 CEST90+6 min: No penalty. Play resumes.
27 Apr 202519.56 CEST90+5 min: Play has been stopped to check a potential Lyon penalty. A possible handball from Mead it appears.
27 Apr 202519.55 CEST90+4 min: Arsenal fans are making themselves heard as we approach the final minute.
27 Apr 202519.52 CEST90+2 min: Another substitution for Arsenal as Katie Reid replaces McCabe. What a moment for the 18-year-old!
27 Apr 202519.51 CEST90+1 min: Five minutes have been added on. Five minutes separate Arsenal from the Champions League final.
27 Apr 202519.51 CEST90 min: Arsenal have a free kick in midfield following an accidental kick to the stomach from Marozsán on Cooney-Cross. Nothing comes of the set-piece.
27 Apr 202519.48 CEST88 min: Van Domselaar is booked for time wasting. Two minutes of regular time left to play.
27 Apr 202519.47 CEST87 min: Another double change for Arsenal. Caldentey, who scored the second goal of the day, is replaced by Lotte Wubben-Moy. Meanwhile, Maanum makes way for Kyra Cooney-Cross.
27 Apr 202519.46 CEST84 min: A huge chance for Lyon to get another! Marozsán gets a free header from a corner but directs her effort over the bar! Tensions are rising here…
27 Apr 202519.44 CEST82 min: The ball is sent into the Arsenal box and falls to Dumornay, who is given the time and space to set herself for the shot before firing past Van Domselaar. Game on?
27 Apr 202519.43 CESTGOAL
27 Apr 202519.39 CEST78 min: It would, indeed, take a devastating collapse for Arsenal to let this slip now. Just over 10 minutes to go here. Lisbon is in sight for the WSL side!
27 Apr 202519.37 CESTArsenal fan Kári is starting to believe…
“Now that 75 minutes have been played and Arsenal are three goals to the good, intrusive thoughts of total collapse have started to recede and I’m starting to believe that Arsenal will really reach the final. What a lovely day to be a fan!”
27 Apr 202519.36 CEST75 min: Another two changes for Lyon as Renard is replaced by Alice Sombath and Damaris makes way for Dzsenifer Marozsán.
27 Apr 202519.33 CEST73 min: Sommer goes for goal from distance but drags her effort well wide of the post.
27 Apr 202519.32 CEST71 min: Renée Slegers makes her first two changes of the game as goalscorer Russo makes way for Stina Blackstenius. Beth Mead is also introduced to replace Kelly.
27 Apr 202519.30 CEST68 min: Another two changes for Lyon as Daniëlle van de Donk replaces Heaps and Hegerberg makes way for Eugénie Le Sommer.
27 Apr 202519.28 CEST67 min: This is an absolute demolition job from Arsenal. They are tearing last year’s Champions League finalists apart.
27 Apr 202519.26 CEST64 min: Foord capitalises on a huge slip from Gilles in the box before firing her shot into the top-left corner! A hugely unfortunate error for the Lyon defender, but what a moment for Arsenal!
27 Apr 202519.24 CESTGOAL
27 Apr 202519.22 CEST60 min: Lyon have a corner and the ball is sent straight into the box. Dumornay goes for the volley around 15 yards out but McCabe gets in the way to block. Arsenal then look to break forward but Egurrola is booked for a cynical foul on Little.
27 Apr 202519.19 CEST58 min: Joe Montemurro is first to make a change as Amel Majri replaces Chawinga for Lyon.
27 Apr 202519.17 CEST55 min: A long ball is played over to Hegerberg deep in the Arsenal half. She brings it down for Chawinga, who makes a run in from the left before going for goal, but Van Domselaar makes a crucial save.
27 Apr 202519.14 CEST53 min: The ball is played to Russo on the edge of the box. The striker takes it on the half-turn before going for goal, forcing a save from Endler. Lyon head straight down to the other end of the pitch and Carpenter is in a position to shoot, but her effort flies past the post.
27 Apr 202519.11 CEST49 min: Two Arsenal stars stop Chawinga from breaking forward and the Gunners look to pounce once again. Nothing comes of the attack, however.
27 Apr 202519.08 CEST47 min: What a start to this second half from Arsenal! The Gunners capitalise on some poor Lyon defending from kick-off and the ball falls to Russo, who slots it past Endler and into the bottom-right corner!
27 Apr 202519.06 CESTGOAL
27 Apr 202519.00 CESTThat was a fantastic first-half performance from Arsenal. They have so far achieved just what they needed to – and that was massively helped by the early goal. They have to remain fully focussed now for the remaining 45 minutes. A place in the final is at stake…
27 Apr 202518.55 CESTArsenal fans, happy with that?
27 Apr 202518.52 CESTHalf-time: Lyon 0-2 Arsenal (2-3 agg)Arsenal have flipped this semi-final on its head. As it stands, they will meet Barcelona in the Champions League final – but there is still 45 minutes to be played…
27 Apr 202518.50 CEST45+2 min: Little picks out an attempted Lyon clearance on the edge of the box. She plays it short to Russo in the box, who sets it back to Caldentey 20 yards out from goal. The midfielder takes the ball out of her feet before unleashing a stunning shot into the top-right corner! What a moment to score!
27 Apr 202518.48 CESTGOAL
27 Apr 202518.45 CEST43 min: A loose Arsenal pass is intercepted and the ball is sent out to Dumornay on the right. The forward goes for the cross but McCabe can make the interception.
27 Apr 202518.42 CEST40 min: Foord attempts to slip Maanum through on goal in the box, but the midfielder doesn’t seem to anticipate the pass and Lyon have a goal kick.
27 Apr 202518.41 CEST38 min: Lyon have a corner and Arsenal make the clearance, but the ball only runs as far as Carpenter around 30 yards out from goal. The defender goes for the shot and blazes her effort over the bar. Another heart-in-mouth moment for the visitors.
27 Apr 202518.38 CEST35 min: Lyon have a free kick in a very threatening position after Dumornay is fouled by Maanum. Bacha steps up to take and fires her effort narrowly over the crossbar. Arsenal breathe a sigh of relief.
27 Apr 202518.36 CEST34 min: Caldentey picks up a loose ball and goes for an audacious shot from around 25 yards out, but her effort is off-target. Arsenal are really piling on the pressure now.
27 Apr 202518.35 CEST33 min: Another big chance for Arsenal as McCabe fires in a cross from the left. Russo is in the middle but can’t make contact.
Lyon 1-4 Arsenal (3-5 agg): Slegers' side seal WCL final spot after inspired turnaroundArsenal advanced to their first Women's Champions League final in 18 years after a wonderful turnaround against eight-time winners Lyon.Arsenal produced an inspired turnaround to defeat Lyon 5-3 on aggregate and book their place in the Women's Champions League final.
Renee Slegers' side trailed 2-1 following last week's first leg, but ran out commanding 4-1 winners at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday to set up a showdown with reigning champions Barcelona in next month's showpiece.
Arsenal had overturned deficits to overcome Hacken and Real Madrid in the previous rounds, and took just five minutes to level the tie, as Chloe Kelly's corner ricocheted off Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler and into her own net.
There was nothing fortuitous about the Gunners' second goal in first-half stoppage time, though, with Alessia Russo teeing up Mariona Caldentey to whip a superb strike into the top corner.
Russo then got in on the act within 27 seconds of the restart, capitalising on sloppy defending before firing home.
Another defensive error allowed Arsenal to score a fourth in the 63rd minute, Caitlin Foord pouncing on a Vanessa Gilles slip before finishing.
Melchie Dumornay pulled one back for the hosts 10 minutes from time, but it was a mere consolation as the visitors held out to seal their first Champions League final appearance in 18 years.
Data Debrief: Arsenal flip the form book in emphatic fashion
Arsenal had lost six of their seven Champions League semi-final ties, but enjoyed a timely upturn in fortunes in superb fashion.
The Gunners inflicted Lyon's first competitive defeat on home soil after 90 minutes since they lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the 2022-23 Champions League semi-final first leg.
The eight-time champions also saw their streak of 11 successive semi-final aggregate victories in this competition brought to a shuddering halt.

Arsenal boss Renee Slegers speaking to DAZN: "We grew into the game
We knew it was going to be a hard challenge
Lyon are a hard team to beat and they have a lot of quality
We started to play our game in the second and we dominated and there was a really good phase
We worked really hard to get that goal so we are really disappointed with the loss and the goal we conceded after that
"We knew it was going to be hard because they have so much quality
We know it's only half-time and they are leading with one goal and we have next week ahead of us."
"We create chances and get numbers in the box
we just couldn't get the ball in the net
"We are not going to change those things in a week
We have been really good with our clinical finishing before
I trust the team that we can score those goals from those opportunities
We definitely want to do better and we look forward to next week."
On the 40,000+ crowd: "We love playing at the Emirates
When we needed them they were there and they were noisy
We are going to do everything to get the win on Sunday."

It's one goal and it's 90 minutes so we are alive and we will have our chances
We need to work hard this week and play better but it's one goal in 90 minutes and we are still here
they are so quick and so dangerous in counter attacks
We dominated in a lot of moments but we need to be more clinical in front of goal
"Normally we do take our chances but this is a top team so it's not that easy
We need to keep believing and we will go for it

[In the second half] it was more purposeful

They stayed more central and they had more bodies in the box committing to crosses

Melchie Dumornay has scored five goals in the Women's Champions League this season
Melchie Dumornay scored an 82nd-minute goal to give Lyon a 2-1 advantage against Arsenal in the first leg of their Women's Champions League semi-final at Emirates Stadium
The Gunners are looking to reach their first Champions League final since they won the competition - then known as the Uefa Women's Cup - in 2007
Their bid for a first European trophy in 18 years suffered a blow in the 17th minute as Kadidiatou Diani's cool finish put eight-time champions Lyon in front
Lyon's celebrations were initially cut short by the offside flag
but they resumed when the video assistant referee judged Emily Fox to have narrowly played Diani onside before the France winger slotted past Manuela Zinsberger
Arsenal surged forward in search of an equaliser and were handed a lifeline with 15 minutes remaining when the VAR advised the referee to review a challenge by Christiane Endler on Leah Williamson
After watching the Lyon goalkeeper make slight contact with Williamson's head on the pitchside monitor
referee Ionela Pesu controversially awarded a penalty
who won the Champions League with Barcelona last year
stepped up to the spot and calmly fired home to level
But the jubilant scenes were short-lived as Lyon restored their lead four minutes later when Dumornay powered between Fox and Steph Catley before finishing over the onrushing Zinsberger
The second leg will take place at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on 27 April
with the winner of the tie facing either Chelsea or Barcelona in the final in Lisbon on 24 May

There had been a feel-good factor at Arsenal this week
The men's side had cruised into the semi-finals of the Champions League with victory over holders Real Madrid
while Sleger's side had claimed an emphatic 5-1 win over Leicester in the Women's Super League on Tuesday
And Slegers had said pre-match that the Gunners would need to "take the game by the throat" and capitalise on a 40,000-strong home crowd
But a vibrant mood at the Emirates - strengthened by Arsenal's control of possession during the early stages - was dampened when Diani broke through the hosts' offside trap and latched on to Ellie Carpenter's ball before drilling in
keeping Lyon's lethal front three quiet for much of the game while Alessia Russo
Frida Maanum and Beth Mead all coming agonisingly close with headers from around the six-yard box
Endler made a smart save to deny Caitlin Foord and recovered from a sloppy pass to stop substitute Chloe Kelly from assisting Russo for an easy finish
But Lyon - managed by former Gunners boss Joe Montemurro - demonstrated their European pedigree once more by bouncing back immediately from Arsenal's equaliser through Dumornay's delightful finish
Despite finding themselves a goal down against Europe's elite
Arsenal can take confidence from their second-leg performance against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals
where they fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 on aggregate

We reached the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time since 2007 in style with a 4-1 win away to Lyon in the second leg of the semi-finals
coming from behind to win the tie 5-3 on aggregate
A Chloe Kelly corner forced a Christiane Endler own goal to give us the perfect start in France
and Mariona Caldentey scored a screamer at the end of the opening 45 minutes to send us into the break full of confidence
it seemed the best form of defence was attack as Alessia Russo struck our third immediately after half-time
and Caitlin Foord capitalised on a defensive mistake to create pandemonium among those in red and white
enough to ensure Melchie Dumornay's 81st-minute goal was nothing more than a consolation
Kim Little forced a great save from Endler early on
with the resulting corner being headed onto the Lyon goalkeeper and into the net by Damaris Egurrola for 1-0 to The Arsenal
Wendie Renard shot over from close range in a crowded area after we didn’t clear the danger from a corner at the other end
before Foord drifted in from the left and went for goal on her right foot
Ellie Carpenter’s cross was headed wide by Vanessa Gilles as the home side looked for a response
but when they gave the ball away in a dangerous area
it was Mariona’s cross that was headed wide by Russo
Lyon conceding possession became a theme of the first half
doing so in the 34th minute allowing Mariona to curl high and wide from distance
Selma Bacha’s long-range free-kick sailed onto the roof of our net during an end-to-end encounter
and a Lyon corner subsequently came out to Carpenter who fired over
Kelly and Little made it happen in the final third before Russo set the ball up for our super Spaniard to bend it into the top right corner from the edge of the area with a postage stamp finish
Daphne van Domselaar then denied Egurrola from close range and we went into the break ahead 2-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate
Over 500 Arsenal supporters were in full voice in the top tier of the OL Stadium as they witnessed Foord and Frida Maanum cause chaos among the Lyon backline at the start of the second half
allowing Russo to dart through on goal and nestle the ball beyond Endler for 3-0 and 4-2 on aggregate
Russo forced another save as we went on the hunt for even more goals before Carpenter struck wide on the counter-attack
Ada Hegerberg was next to see her effort thwarted by Van Domselaar
and Katie McCabe was on the line to get in the way of Dumornay's powerful half-volley
as another defensive error from Lyon was punished by Foord
who had so much time and space to rifle the ball into the back of the net and put us in cruise control
Dumornay pulled one back with nine minutes remaining to plant a slight seed of doubt
and Dzsenifer Marozsán headed over from close range during a late flurry of Lyon pressure
but in the end of one of our best performances of a season in which there have been so many
we got the job done to produce another unforgettable Champions League comeback
We face Barcelona in the final on May 24 for our second-ever Women's Champions League final
We head to Villa Park on Wednesday looking to keep up the winning ways in the Barclays Women's Super League with a 6pm kick-off against Aston Villa

Six changes for Arsenal against Brighton Women as big guns return
Arsenal will play Barcelona in the Champions League final after beating Lyon 4-1 in the second leg
Renée Slegers made two changes to last weekend’s team
and Daphne van Domselaar returning to goal in place of Manu Zinsberger
after a faster than expected recovery from an ankle injury
There was also a place for Lotte Wubben-Moy on the bench
who held the ball up on the edge of the box for Little
whose left footed shot was parried by Endler for a corner
From the corner, Arsenal leveled the tie on 5 minutes. Kelly’s corner was missed by Endler, and was headed by Egurrola, under pressure from Maanum, onto Endler’s back and it trickled over the line. 0-1
went beyond her international teammate before shooting straight at Endler
McCabe did well to stick tight to Diani and block a cross out for a corner
and crossed into the penalty box for an unmarkedRusso
Neat play from Arsenal saw the Gunners build from the back and across from the right before Foord slipped in McCabe
landing on the top of the net with Van Domselaar frozen
having been second best for most of the first half were upping the intensity
with Dumornay and Diani having shots blocked
Mariona Caldentey gave Arsenal the lead on aggregate in the first minute of first half stoppage time. The move had looked like it fizzled out with too many Arsenal players central. Mariona, though, took a pass on, and from the edge of the penalty box fired a shot into the top corner. 0-2
Bacha was slipped in behind Fox and crossed for an unmarked Egurrola
Alessia Russo extended Arsenal’s lead in the first minute of the second half. A mix up from Lyon defensively led to Foord, slipping, to play to Maanum. A richochet came to Russo, who, from the inside left, shot, with Endler only able to get a touch. 0-3
with the shot wide of Van Domselaar’s post
McCabe made a vital block on the hour mark
Bacha’s corner was floated to the back post
but McCabe blocked it on the line and Arsenal cleared
On 63 minutes, Caitlin Foord made it 4-0 on the night after another massive Lyon error. Endler played short to Gilles on a goal kick. Gilles slipped, Foord ran on to it, and fired into the roof of the net. 0-4
Egurrola somehow escaped a second yellow after bringing Russo down
Stina Blackstenius and Beth Mead replaced Russo and Kelly
there was plenty of space for Arsenal to exploit
Lyon pulled a goal back on 81 minutes. Carpenter’s cross was headed by Little down, but it came straight to Dumornay, who fired past Van Domselaar. 1-4
Van Domselaar came and didn’t reach the ball
Kyra Cooney-Cross and Lotte Wubben-Moy replaced Mariona and Frida Maanum
Little won the ball on the edge of the Lyon box
but Arsenal couldn’t work an angle to shoot
Carpenter played in another dangerous cross
and first Le Sommer and then Majiri tried to get on it
and Le Sommer attempted a bicycle kick that went well over
and then the referee finally blew for full time
and Arsenal were through to the Champions League final

Renee can be super proud of herself and what she’s done since taking over
Incredibly delighted for every one of these players
What a way to roll back the years in that midfield today
I was listening to an interview she made before the tie even began
she mentioned how she has been to a couple of UWCL semis with this club but never the final
And how much it would mean to her to lead this club to the final
Seeing how emotional she was at the… Read more »
Let’s hope for 2 CL finals versus Barcelona
Strange how the men are allways dragged into the women performance
It is unthinkable any one would say in the men matchreport: lets hope the women will also reach the finales
Our own Remontada!😀😂….what can I say
The future looks bright for AFC at all levels!
“The future looks bright for AFC at all levels!!”
What a time to be associated with this club
You have to wonder if these are the same players who were so underwhelming at the start of the season
It shows just how good a job Renee Slegers has done
I’d be honest and say I didn’t expect her to be performing the way she has done
To go from losing 5 – 2 to Bayern to beating LYON 1 – 4 at home enroute to the final is truly superb work
The way Katie and Foxy handled the Lyon wingers today compared to all the space we gave them in the first leg shows they learned from the first leg
Think she is going to be thorn in Bompastor’s flesh next season
At the 5-2 loss it was not Slefers at the helm
Just because things didn’t work out doesn’t mean he is useless
Emery wasn’t what Arsenal needed when he came here
that doesn’t mean he’s a bad manager
doing alright at Villa and won a bunch of trophies before he came to Arsenal
Surely you can acknowledge how well Slegers has done without putting down Eidevall
but he had a great personality and gave us some memorable results himself
Remember how dreary it was to face City and Chelsea towards the end of Joe’s tenure
Don’t understand the insults fans level at him (same as the Emery situation.)
I didn’t have much faith in the ladies turning it around in Lyon
Now I’m a believer that we both can win the UCL this season
I refrained from mentioning that because I don’t want to jinx it
dare we dream for a men and women’s champions league double
Now let’s make it a Champions League Final double!!
I would take Inter on the men side for a change
Wouldn’t mind adding a couple more players of her ilk to the team this summer
the same pundits will turn around to discuss how the OL team haven’t really been great all season
Yep you can guarantee it.The general rule of thumb is.If Arsenal win the opposition are crap.If Arsenal lose. The opposition are the greatest team in the universe

A real team effort with standouts from Kim Little
And now Barca which will be a real challenge
I saw their first match with Chelsea and part of today’s and I don’t think I have seen so many fouls in a single match go unpunished. However
I do believe that we have a real chance of beating them and am looking forward to the match
Full credit must also go to Renee and her staff who have re-ignited the team and made our player play their best with freedom
you’re crying 🤩 fantastic day all eound
Just one question: why wasn’t Beth’s handball given as a penalty
but perhaps the VAR found a preceding foul or off side
The game was between the creator (Joe) and the creature (Renée Slegers) how it ended was unbelievable
Joe created a strategist who has not yet shown her potential
Next she became assist to Eidevall at Arsenal
Joe mentored Renee when she was doing her UEFA Pro License training
I think this was mentioned in the match commentary on DAZN
it all started in 2022. https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news/0272-146b0dad1683-496eb8af271d-1000–the-countless-benefits-of-the-uefa-coach-mentor-programme/
She already won two titels and a cup in Sweden after eidevall left
Anyone secretly planning a two centre Lisbon / Munich holiday yet
They absolutely bossed it everywhere on the pitch today
The article’s comment on Maanum not getting some passes right was a bit harsh
She and the rest of the team ran their socks off all game
Their tiredness showed a little toward the end
What a fucking performance from Renee and the entire team
I’m thoroughly going to enjoy the final whatever happens
Also major shoutout to the travelling fans
so happy ❤️ Especially for Kimmie who is still beloved in Seattle (where I live) from her time with the Reign
I don’t understand what you are saying
I’d like to give a mention to Steph Catley: I’ve been a bit worried about her but she was faultless
And Mariona’s goal was so sublime that we can overlook Lessi’s – so cool
and much more difficult than she made it look
The boss of French football’s financial regulator has hit back at criticisms made by Lyon owner John Textor
accusing the American of a “clear and persistent lack of understanding” of the rules
Textor, whose Eagle Football Group also owns 45 per cent of Crystal Palace and majority stakes in Brazilian champions Botafogo and Belgian second-tier side RWD Molenbeek
accused the DNCG of not understanding his multi-club ownership model and of being unduly influenced by his rivals in the French league
particularly Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi
But in a statement released on Tuesday that was sent to The Athletic
DNCG chairman Jean-Marc Mickeler said he was “surprised” to learn of Textor’s remarks
as the watchdog acts “within a strict regulatory framework” to ensure the financial sustainability of the French professional game and treats all clubs equally
“Mr Textor’s statements on the alleged attachment of the DNCG to the league
or on the discriminatory treatment of (Lyon)
demonstrate a clear and persistent lack of understanding of the rules governing the regulation of professional football in France,” he said
Mickeler continued by saying the DNCG had made “unprecedented” efforts to understand Textor’s plans since his arrival in France in late 2022
with his staff carefully explaining the regulator’s requirements to Textor and his team
He dismissed Textor’s protests as “unfounded assertions” that distract everyone from the need for “concrete and credible solutions” to Lyon’s debts
which rose to over half a billion euros last year
and urged the Eagle Football boss to deliver his various plans for improving Lyon’s finances
Mickeler called on the Lyon owner “to adopt a serious stance — French football deserves serious investors who respect its institutions and are committed to working in a spirit of cooperation and transparency”
Textor declined to comment on Mickeler’s statement when contacted by The Athletic but suggested he will have more to say about his wider critique of the DNCG’s approach to Lyon and Eagle Football in the days to come
'We must hope for a miracle': How a failed TV deal has put Ligue 1 in crisis mode
The French Football Federation (FFF) has weighed in, though, saying it has full confidence in the DNCG
which “operates with total independence and perfect integrity”
the governing body added that its president Philippe Diallo has “serious concerns” about the financial health of the French league and wants to bring the league
DNCG and clubs together to “explore pathways for the necessary recovery of professional football”
Textor told The Athletic he would be happy to take part in these talks and confirmed that he had already apologised for comments he made about Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) boss Vincent Labrune in his appearance on ex-PSG star Jeremy Rothen’s RMC show
In an answer about his strained relationship with Al-Khelaifi
Textor described Labrune as the PSG chief’s “lapdog” for failing to stand up to the Qatari during a crisis meeting with club owners about the league’s disastrous media rights auction
which was only resolved weeks before the start of this season
left London-based streamer DAZN with the bulk of the rights and beIN Sports
the Doha-based media giant run by Al-Khelaifi
The total value of these deals is €500m (£420m)
half what Labrune had promised and significantly less than last season’s arrangement
Textor was among several club owners who believed the league should create its own streaming platform and sell passes directly to fans
they were “bullied” by Al-Khelaifi into accepting beIN’s offer
Textor told RMC that this was just another example of the “extraordinary control” Al-Khelaifi exerts over a league that his team has dominated for the last decade
While Textor is keen to work with Labrune and other club owners on how best to boost French football’s revenues by improving the television product it sells
there is no sign of any peace offerings being sent in Al-Khelaifi’s direction
A spokesperson for PSG responded to Textor’s RMC interview by saying
“It’s a shame that class and elegance cannot be bought because that would have stopped Mr Textor from making a fool of himself through his crude and false comments about our president
concluded by inviting Textor “back to earth
so he could better understand this Ligue 1 we love so much”
The bad blood between them started last summer when Textor told Brazilian outlet Globo that he was competing against “a country
as PSG has a business model “of unbridled spending
John Textor interview: His uncertain Palace future
That prompted PSG’s general secretary Victoriano Melero to send Textor an open letter that warned him of legal action if he continued to make “defamatory and damaging statements” about the French champions
It is advice Textor has appeared to ignore
as he expanded on his comments to Globo in Monday’s RMC interview
he accused Al-Khelaifi and PSG of breaking European Union laws against the use of foreign subsidies to distort competition
a reference to the huge annual losses the Paris club have posted since they were bought by Qatar Sports Investments
Textor also said he would not sell any of Lyon’s best players to Al-Khelaifi and claimed he only agreed to the 2023 transfer of Bradley Barcola because the France winger made it clear he wanted to move to PSG
Textor said he only wants players at Lyon who “dream of following (Lyon legends) Juninho
This would appear to rule out the chance of current Lyon star Rayan Cherki joining Barcola at PSG any time soon
In fact, on Tuesday, French outlet Foot Mercato published two WhatsApp messages which were sent by Textor to someone at a rival club
asking them if they were still interested in signing Cherki
who Textor refers to as “this little a**hole”
Foot Mercato does not name the club but Textor has confirmed to The Athletic that it was PSG
who were widely reported to have agreed a deal to sign Cherki with the player’s representatives last year
In his first message, Textor tells PSG that Borussia Dortmund had been in contact about Cherki but he would tell them to “f**k off” if PSG “still want the player”
The second message suggests the rival club replied to say they were still interested
before clarifying that the player is “a good kid” but his “team of people are total a**holes”
Textor signs off by saying he will tell Cherki that
In the end, Cherki decided to extend his contract with Lyon last year and has been in superb form this season, helping the team recover from a slow start to the season to remain in contention for a Champions League place next season via the league or by winning the Europa League
do reveal Textor’s knack for straight-talking
which was also very evident during his radio appearance this week
he remains very confident that Lyon will not be relegated to Ligue 2 next season
as has already injected €85m in cash into the business since the DNCG made its threat in November
with Eagle Football expected to make more than €65m in player sales this window
Lyon have already sold Maxine Caqueret, Jeffinho and Gift Orban, while Brazilian stars Cuiabano, Luiz Henrique
Igor Jesus and Junior Santos are among those expected to leave Botafogo
There is also the not-insignificant matter of his long-running attempt to sell his Palace shares
although they appear to be a much tougher sell than his players
Sportsbank enter exclusivity to invest in Textor's Eagle Football group

PSG and Lyon Ignite the Battle for the Champions League in Ligue 1Ligue 1 teams already know they won't be getting a fourth guaranteed spot for the next edition of the Champions LeagueIt’s been a week of contrasts for Ligue 1 teams in their respective European competitions
PSG struggled against Aston Villa… but managed to secure their place in the Champions League semifinals for the second consecutive year
Olympique de Lyon experienced a rollercoaster of emotions at Old Trafford against Manchester United
This situation means that Ligue 1 clubs are now fully aware
as they enter the final stretch of the season
they won’t have a fourth guaranteed spot to access the next edition of the Champions League
The Premier League and LaLiga have secured five spots each
while Serie A and the Bundesliga will each have four guaranteed spots
There was a chance that if Olympique Lyon had kept advancing through the Europa League
Ligue 1 might have overtaken the Bundesliga and claimed that fourth spot… which could have even turned into five had they won the title
their heavy loss at Old Trafford directly hurt their own chances
a position that only grants access to the Champions qualifying round
That would’ve been the most optimistic scenario for Ligue 1 teams… and the final outcome wouldn’t have been known until the end of the season in France
all the clubs involved in the race now know there’s no room for missteps if they want to secure one of the spots for the next Champions League… and the battle in these final matches promises to be intense
there are still five matchdays left and 15 points up for grabs
That means up to nine teams still have a mathematical chance to qualify for the Champions League
Monaco (53 points) and Marseille (52) would earn direct qualification… and Lyon (51) would enter the preliminary round
or Nice (48) are within one win of breaking into the top spots
and even Auxerre (38) still have a shot at joining the race
André Onana was at fault for both Lyon goals as Rayan Cherki’s stoppage-time strike cancelled out what looked to be a late winner from Joshua Zirkzee
We are really disappointed. We should have taken a one-goal advantage into the next game.
[On Andre Onana’s mistake(s)] The important thing is to focus on the next game. When one player makes a mistake, all the team makes a mistake.
[Do you need to change goalkeepers?] No, we continue to do the same thing – training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best XI to win every match.
[On United’s performance] I think we did well. In the first half we had some difficulties trying to press the opponent because they play in a different way. In the second half we adapted and controlled the game. I think we did well; we can do better.
We are improving game by game but we need to be more clinical. This is half-time, we have to think of the next one. We’ll give everything we have to get to the next stage.
10 Apr 202523.16 CESTJamie Jackson’s report has landed so I’ll leave you with that. Goodnight!
It’s the worst moment to concede a goal. Two-one would have been a good result away form home but now we have to win it at home. They’re a good team with a good striker and we need to be ready for everything.
[On his goal] I didn’t even think about it, I just reacted and tried to put my head there.
I think we defended really well, we were compact, and we’ll need that again at home. We need to keep our heads up – we didn’t lose tonight and we can win at Old Trafford, of course we can.
10 Apr 202522.59 CESTFull time: Lyon 2-2 Man UtdWell that escalated slowly. A relatively cagey match exploded into life at the death, with late goals at both ends. Man Utd will still be favourites going next week’s second leg, but that Cherki goal is a huge blow.
10 Apr 202522.58 CEST90+6 min Robbie Savage thinks that was another mistake by Onana. I’d like to see it again. Tolisso’s shot was straight at him but it was well struck and came through a crowd. Maybe he should have held it, I don’t know. Either way, Cherki’s finish was gorgeous.
10 Apr 202522.57 CESTMan Utd just couldn’t get the ball away and eventually the pressure told. Tolisso’s shot was spilled by Onana and Cherki reacted first to flick a beautiful short-range finish over Onana.

Lyon 2-2 Man Utd (Cherki 90+5)Lyon’s main man has saved them
10 Apr 202522.55 CEST90+4 min Mainoo’s awareness and use of the ball have been superb since he came on. He does the little things so well, most notably the header to Fernandes in the build-up to the goal.
Updated at 22.55 CEST10 Apr 202522.53 CEST90+1 min Fernandes attempt a carbon copy of the goal with another excellent flipped cross. This time Mata gets in front of Zirkzee at the far post and heads behind for a corner.
10 Apr 202522.52 CEST90 min Five minutes of added time. I’d need to see Zirkzee’s goal again to know how much fortune, if any, was involved. Not that he or United will care.
10 Apr 202522.51 CESTLindelof droves a long pass towards Fernandes that was cut out 20 yards from goal. Mainoo reacted smartly to head the ball back to Fernandes, who teased a superb curling cross towards Zirkzee at the far post. Zirkzee leapt with Mata and powered a header above the leaping Perri.
Replays show Mata got a slight headed touch onto the head of Zirkzee, though I’m not sure how much it changed the flight of the ball.

Lyon 1-2 Man Utd (Zirkzee 88)Joshua Zirkzee has scored a priceless goal
Updated at 22.48 CEST10 Apr 202522.44 CEST83 min: Double substitution for Man Utd Kobbie Mainoo, back after two months out, and Victor Lindelof replace Alejandro Garnacho and Harry Maguire.
10 Apr 202522.44 CEST82 min Almada, on the right, plays a fine pass infield to Cherki. He takes it neatly in his stride before driving over from 20 yards.
10 Apr 202522.41 CEST80 min: Just wide from Casemiro! Fernandes curls an outswinging corner towards Casemiro, who plants a header this far wide of the near post. It was a good effort, but for a player of his quality…
10 Apr 202522.41 CEST79 min Fernandes does superbly to find Dorgu on the left. He curls an early cross towards Garnacho, who does well to get in front of his man and force a volley into the ground. The ball kicks up and is tipped over by Perri. A comfortable save in the end.
10 Apr 202522.40 CEST78 min: Aggro klaxon
Tagliafico fouls Mount and the two players square up
after a bit of posturing from both sets of players
I’m not sure whether Tagliafico’s yellow card was for the foul or whether he also pushed Mount
The blaze in his eyes suggest he’d like to do a whole lo more than push Mount
10 Apr 202522.36 CEST75 min Tagliafico wins a corner for Lyon, who would really rather like a second goal to take to Manchester. Not this time: the corner is headed away at the near post by Fernandes.
I guess it depends how you define ‘small nation’. If it’s on population you could pick Croatia at various points in the last 30 years.
10 Apr 202522.33 CEST71 min: Man Utd substitution Mason Mount comes on for Manuel Ugarte, which suggests Bruno Fernandes will move deeper alongside Casemiro.
10 Apr 202522.31 CEST69 min Mazraoui makes a vital block from Mikautadze’s shot, which came after a good run from Maitland-Niles, and United break three on three. Garnacho carries the ball 60 yards but then plays a really poor pass across the field towards Fernandes. That was a big chance.
10 Apr 202522.27 CEST65 min What a fine player Mikautadze is
He controls a shin-high cross from the left on the half turn
scurries towards goal and pokes a shot that deflects past the far post off Maguire
The referee doesn’t see the touch off Maguire and gives a goalkick
Updated at 22.28 CEST10 Apr 202522.24 CEST64 min Fernandes’s corner is headed away, Lyon threaten to break but United get back into their defensive shape very quickly.
10 Apr 202522.24 CEST63 min: Man Utd substitution Ugarte finds Garnacho, who runs at Niakhate to win another Man Utd corner. Before the corner is taken, Joshua Zirkzee replaces Rasmus Hojlund.
10 Apr 202522.22 CEST61 min Leny Yoro runs forward from the back, uses Hojlund by not using him and drives not far wide from 25 yards. The keeper had it covered but it was a nice bit of enterprise from Yoro.
10 Apr 202522.20 CEST58 min That Mikautadze run aside, United have quietly had the better of the second half. But you’d expect Lyon to have a spell of pressure sooner rather than later.
Updated at 22.20 CEST10 Apr 202522.17 CEST56 min The Lyon keeper Perri looks nervous on set-pieces
He doesn’t come for an awkward inswinging corner from Fernandes that is headed across goal and wide by a Lyon defender
The second corner leads to a bit of a scramble before being cleared
I’m not doing it justice, it was silky and ingenious. Go and find a video. AND WATCH KVARATSKHELIA’S GOAL FHS.
Updated at 22.19 CEST10 Apr 202522.15 CEST53 min: Chance for Lacazette! Mikautadeze beats Mazraoui all ends up with a brilliant touch just outside the area. Then he slips Garnacho, gets to the byline and clips a cross that is shanked wide on the volley by Lacazette. That was a pretty good chance.
10 Apr 202522.14 CEST53 min Ugarte is booked for a foul on Mikautadze
The North Farmington boys soccer team never hesitates to play against tough opponents
Deva Selva scored the game-winner in the 26th minute
ensuring the Raiders (4-5-1) a 1-0 victory Monday against visiting South Lyon in another challenging nonconference match
Nine of their 10 games have been against teams outside of the Oakland Activities Association-Blue
and almost all of them have been against what eighth-year coach Erika Rust calls "heavy-hitters."
They've faced recent state champions in Detroit Catholic Central and Detroit Country Day
They've faced respectable opponents like Grosse Pointe South from the Macomb Area Conference and Livonia Churchill from the Kensington Lakes Activities Association
And they have two upcoming games against Berkley and Rochester from the OAA-Red
And North certainly wants to win its division
who's been with the program for 11 seasons

"(Having a challenging schedule) has always been that way here
But part of it is the OAA is always stacked with some of the top soccer talent in the entire state
prestigious schools with soccer traditions on the schedule

South Lyon (2-3) drew a penalty kick six minutes into the match
North goalie Nolan Edelmann stepped into the net like a veteran
dove toward the left post and batted down the attempt
When you're used to facing shots against state-ranked opponents
those types of moments don't look so scary halfway through the season
"I think that's where the difference comes in," Rust added
"There's a tendency when you're scheduling teams that don't have a strong overall record or struggle themselves for you to play down to your competition and get into not necessarily the best habits
So it's best to play against the type of programs that keep us prepared for not only the league but going forward into districts."

The Raiders (0-0-1) are a half-game back in the Blue standings because they've only played one league match — a 1-1 tie with Pontiac — after their game against Ferndale was postponed because of poor weather
But they have the pieces to compete for the division title when league play restarts next week
That includes captains Andrew Coulter and Damond Richmond
strikers Mohamed Elewa and Luke Pelloski and additional contributors such as Kareem Istanbouli
they'll be battle-tested before facing league opponents
"They're not shying away from it because it wasn't too long ago that we were in the Red (in 2021)
playing the Troys and the Berkleys and Rochesters regularly
We don't want to forget about that and still aim for (being promoted to the better divisions)
So we'll see how we do against (Blue opponents)
If we keep improving our performance against teams that have outplayed us like CC and Lake Orion
we're going to be in good shape going forward."

Goals from Kadidiatou Diani and Melchie Dumornay give Lyon the advantage heading into the second leg
United bossed possession and kept West Ham under pressure but failed to make it pay against the determined hosts, who threatened themselves late on and were worthy of their point. The result leaves United five points behind leaders Chelsea, who have a game in hand and face United on 30 April.
Liverpool moved above Brighton into fifth place with a 2-1 win on the south coast. Olivia Smith turned in an excellent cross from Ceri Holland to open the scoring just two minutes in and Holland set up the second just before half-time, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to tee up Leanne Kiernan.
Nineteen-year-old Michelle Agyemang pulled one back for Brighton at the start of the second half to set Liverpool nerves jangling, but they hung on for victory.
