Arsenal reached the Women’s Champions League final for the first time since 2007 after overturning a first-leg deficit against Lyon with a 4-1 victory on Sunday
Arsenal had trailed 2-1 after last weekend’s defeat at the Emirates Stadium but recorded an emphatic win over the record eight-time European champions to progress 5-3 on aggregate and set up a meeting with Barcelona in May’s final
Renee Slegers’ side levelled the scores on aggregate after just five minutes at the Groupama Stadium as Lyon’s Damaris Egurrola’s attempted headed clearance from a corner deflected in off goalkeeper Christiane Endler
Arsenal doubled their advantage on the night and went ahead on aggregate in first-half stoppage time as Mariona Caldentey picked out the top corner with a bending effort from the edge of the penalty area
The visitors added a third one minute into the second half
Arsenal put the game beyond Lyon shortly after the hour-mark as Caitlin Foord capitalised on a slip from Vanessa Gilles and fired the ball into the roof of the net
Lyon pulled one back on 81 minutes though a low Melchie Dumornay effort
They will play defending champions Barcelona in the final on May 24 at Lisbon’s Jose Alvalade Stadium. Barcelona secured their final spot for a fifth successive season after Sunday’s 4-1 win at Chelsea secured an 8-2 aggregate victory.
English sides have not traditionally enjoyed much success in the Women’s Champions League, with Arsenal becoming the first side since Chelsea in 2021 to reach the final, while the north London club’s success in 2007 remains the only time an English team has won the competition in its 24-year history.
There was no single hero for Arsenal in a match that began with a Lyon own goal — a moment that foreshadowed an evening filled with poor defending by Lyon’s flat-footed backline. Arsenal repeatedly capitalised on Lyon’s defensive errors, the Londoners dominating while the home side failed to finish several chances in their attacking third.
The first moment of brilliance for Arsenal came in first-half stoppage time through Caldentey and that momentum carried Arsenal into the second half, where they had a hot start just 31 seconds in thanks to Russo, the ball clumsily making its way through several of Lyon’s defenders.
Lyon had several chances, and it seemed they could have turned things around with a stronger showing in the second half, but that hope never materialised as they slipped further into disarray with each mistake.
Arsenal were the better team and one worthy of a final bout against Barcelona.
Forward Foord, scorer of her side’s fourth goal, said Arsenal took confidence from their performance in the first leg against Lyon despite defeat at the Emirates — but didn’t quite expect to win the second leg in such emphatic fashion.
“It’s incredible, to come into the game a goal down, I guess it didn’t faze us,” Foord told TNT Sports. “We knew what quality we had and we thought we played really well at home, to come here we just knew if we played our game we could do it. I didn’t expect it to be like that, but I’ll take that.”
On the prospect of facing Barcelona, who have won the Champions League in three of the last four seasons, Foord added: “It’s going to be a tough game, it’s a final, anything can happen. We’ll obviously look forward to it and just can’t wait to take them on.”

Manchester United 5-4 Lyon (7-6 agg): Maguire seals historic Europa League comebackManchester United were 4-2 down in extra time and heading out of the Europa League on Thursday, only to stage an unbelievable comeback.Harry Maguire headed the winner as Manchester United staged a miraculous extra-time comeback to beat 10-man Lyon 5-4 in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.
United had been cruising at 2-0 up with 20 minutes of the 90 to play, only for an astonishing collapse to see them taken to extra time and go 4-2 down by the 109th minute.
However, Bruno Fernandes' penalty restored some hope, then Kobbie Mainoo's 120th-minute curler and Maguire's back-post header one minute later sealed the most remarkable of European comebacks.
It means Ruben Amorim's hopes of winning silverware in his first season at the helm remain intact, with a semi-final against tournament favourites Athletic Bilbao to come.
United produced an excellent first-half performance and led within 10 minutes. Alejandro Garnacho stepped onto Fernandes' pass on the right side of the area and cut the ball back for Manuel Ugarte, who tapped into a gaping goal.
Only a full-stretch save from Andre Onana denied Rayan Cherki a glorious equaliser, then Fernandes rattled the crossbar with an over-the-shoulder volley at the other end.
But United got the second goal their first-half pressure warranted in stoppage time, as Diogo Dalot outmuscled Nicolas Tagliafico and finished low across goal.
Lyon introduced some nerves through Corentin Tolisso's close-range header with 19 minutes of the 90 remaining, though, then Tagliafico's shot crept over the line despite the best efforts of Onana six minutes later.
Despite Tolisso receiving his second booking just before the 90 minutes were up, Lyon continued to press in extra time and went ahead through Cherki's left-footed drive in the 104th minute.
A penalty conceded by Luke Shaw and converted by Alexandre Lacazette had Lyon seemingly coasting into the semi-finals at 4-2, but when Thiago Almada kicked the bottom of Casemiro's boot, Fernandes kept his cool from 12 yards to offer United a lifeline.
From there, the Red Devils staged the most remarkable of rescue acts, Mainoo curling home to make it 6-6 on aggregate before Maguire nodded Casemiro's hanging cross home to spark wild celebrations at Old Trafford.
Data debrief: United's greatest European night?
United have enjoyed plenty of European success over the years, but perhaps no victory quite as dramatic as this one.
This was just the second time United had won a game by a 5-4 scoreline in their entire history, with the other coming against Arsenal in February 1958.
It was also the first game in major European football history to see five goals scored after the start of extra time.
Maguire's goal, meanwhile, was the first 120th-minute winner in any Europa League game, and the first in any major European tie since Atletico Madrid beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Champions League in March 2020.
Man Utd and Lyon played out an enthralling Europa League tie which saw the Red Devils stage an unlikely comeback, leaving the French outfit stunned.
Juventus Women’s First Team’s challenging friendly test against French champions Olympique Lyonnais, that took place this afternoon at the Stade Pierre Rajon in Bourgoin-Jallieu, ended in a 4-2 victory for the French side over the Bianconere.
This was a high-quality friendly match facing not only the holders of the French title but also finalists of last season's Women's Champions League. Lyon started strongly and, after an initial phase of patient possession, they took the lead through Eugenie Le Sommer who opened the scoring via a shot from the edge of the area.
The Bianconere clawed a goal back just before half time as Lindsey Thomas’ cross from the right set up Paulina Krumbiegel who volleyed past Christiane Endler in the Lyon goal.
The second half began with some changes made by coach Massimiliano Canzi and it was the two substitutes who combined to score the second goal: Chiara Beccari delivered a perfect ball into the penalty area for Cristiana Girelli, who poked the ball home on the stretch ahead of the opposition defender.
The Bianconere pushed on and had another chance to cause problems for Lyon but Arianna Caruso’s header from just outside the six-yard-box missed by a whisker. With 15 minutes remaining of the match came the moment that all the Juventus fans had been waiting for: coach Canzi decided to introduce Martina Rosucci, who rediscovered the joy of taking to the pitch after a long absence due to unfortunate injury issues.
The last chance of the game fell to Asia Bragonzi who went very close to making it 3-4 but instead her shot rattled the crossbar and Thomas was unable to convert the rebound.
“When I heard my name and the phrase: ‘You'll be on the pitch in 10 minutes’, I felt an emotion I hadn't felt for a long time. I'm so happy to be playing again, even if only in a friendly match, against such a high-quality opponent: I finally felt able to help my teammates, now I'm looking forward with great enthusiasm to my return to the field in an official match to bring an end to this long recovery and mark the beginning of a new adventure.”

Manchester United are into the semi-finals of the European League after the most thrilling clash at Old Trafford ended 5-4 in their favour with plenty of late drama
The hosts took control of the match in the first half and dominated possession with Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot giving Ruben Amorim’s men a two-goal advantage
Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca made changes that worked perfectly
Corentin Tolisso pulled one back before Nicolas Tagliafico equalised for the visitors
Tolisso was dismissed late in the 90 minutes and the match went to extra-time
Lyon were the better team even with 10-men
Rayan Cherki slotted the French side ahead and Alexandre Lacazette scored from the penalty spot to leave United trailing by two and on the brink of elimination
But there was a twist to come. Casemiro won a penalty that Bruno Fernandes slotted home before Kobbie Mainoo, playing as striker, was calm and composed to net an equaliser in the 120th minute. Less than a minute later and Harry Maguire proved to be the match winner with a headed effort that sent Old Trafford wild.

“It is a special moment,” Amorim told TNT Sports.
“We know we are underperforming and deserve all the critics.
“But we still have time to make something special of this season.”
“We started well but we are not consistent enough to maintain the game for a long time,” Amorim continues. “When I feel the team is a little bit tired we drop a lot. We should do better with the two goals of Lyon.
“When we play against European teams, we can cope better with that, but in the Premier League we suffer a lot,” he says on the pace and physicality of the top flight.
“That sound is the best sound in the world,” he says of the noise that greeted Maguire’s winning goal, before joking about the fans leaving at the 4-2 down mark to get the best of the traffic.
On the substitutions: “We tried to put Harry Maguire, because he’s the only guy that can score a goal with his head.
“Then Kobbie Mainoo has a lack of pace right now because of his injury. [But] he’s really good in tight spaces and he has the ability to do that kind of goal. We tried it and sometimes it works.
“Playing Premier League and European games is really hard without a full squad.
“We have a lot to improve, but the character is there.”
“Honestly I don’t understand what happened. The fans are crazy, they really helped us today.
How did it feel at 4-2 down? “A lot of things, it was difficult, but when you heard the fans even with 4-2 you know you can do. When we scored the penalty [Bruno Fernandes to make it 4-3], I knew for sure [we would win]. We need to believe - if you don’t believe you cannot win.”
Speaking on TNT Sports Leny Yoro credits the Old Trafford support for getting them through that game.
“The fans give everything in every game, whatever the position in the table, they are always there to support us, so I want to say thank you - it’s because of them that we won the game,” he says.
“Of course our target is to win the trophy. We are Manchester United, we need to believe. I’m sure we can do it, we will give everything to do it. This game showed everything until the last minute. That was crazy.”
“Obviously it's an incredible game, we made really hard work of it. We had full control in the second half, had chances to score a third, then they scored out of no where. It put us on the back foot.
“To go down 4-2 in extra-time to 10 men is not good enough, we opened ourselves too much. But we dug in and showed great spirit, that's what this stadium does.”

“Best Rangers European result since Lyon 2007” amid stunning Bilbao draw | OneFootballIbrox Noise
Let’s dive into Rangers FC’s recent tense 0-0 encounter with Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League quarter-finals. Yes, the score stayed nil-nil, but this was far from your average dry 90 minutes of football. What on the surface might seem like a boring you-know-what encountered a surprising twist, at least for half of the teams involved: Rangers had to finish the match with ten players
beginning with some 70 minutes left to play after a red card
The tension remained high throughout the game
with neither side breaking the deadlock despite a host of near misses (Pilcher & MacKay
Imagine this: It’s the 12th minute of the game, and Robin Propper receives a red card, much to the shock of the fans. Rangers are down to 10 men for the remainder of the match
But rather than collapsing under the pressure
leaving most of us with no nails left to chew
It’s a performance that would make even the most stoic of grandmothers proud
gravity-defying saves to keep Bilbao at bay
He emerges as the Man of the Match by quite a distance
you really had to wonder just how long they could last
Is this a top European result for them since Lyon
because of the teamwork and resilience under pressure
it’s the Lyon result itself that still reigns
because they managed to score goals and were also fairly dominant at the business end of the game
You could even make a case for any number of equally dramatic nights
and now they head to the second leg in the Basque Country with plenty of hope
To sum up, while fans might groan about yet another goalless draw in the world of football, this encounter was anything but boring for those who bleed Rangers blue
The team put in a similarly heroic performance despite being down to 10 men
and holding on for dear life in front of their home support
Here’s hoping that they can carry that momentum into the next leg

Chief football news reporterManchester United dragged their season out of the ashes in quite extraordinary fashion as they scored twice in the final minute of extra time to complete a staggering comeback from 4-2 down against 10-man Lyon at Old Trafford
United appeared to be heading out of the competition in the worst possible manner as they tossed away a two-goal lead in the space of seven minutes before conceding twice in extra time
Supporters were streaming for the exits in their droves but Bruno Fernandes breathed new life into United when he converted a penalty six minutes from time after a video assistant referee intervention for a foul on Casemiro that had initially gone unpunished

United still have a semi-final to play - and
an all-English final with Tottenham - before they can claim a Champions League place by winning the Europa League and grabbing some silverware to at least make this desperate campaign a success
But it will be a while before the memories of what happened fade
that is over 100 years old and has played host to the Busby Babes - the only other United side to win a game by a 5-4 scoreline when they beat Arsenal in the match before the Munich tragedy - the Holy Trinity of George Best
But this single game stands alongside any those illustrious predecessors produced as one of the very best
It is Amorim's job to piece through the ridiculous events that unfolded at Old Trafford
United produced arguably their best performance under him as Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot put them within touching distance of a place in the last four
But they were made to pay for the failure to take one of numerous chances to score a tie-sealing third and then simply tossed away their advantage
The start of their unravelling was a straightforward free-kick into the box
Former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette got a flick on and Corentin Tolisso nipped ahead of Leny Yoro to head home
The goal seemed to suck all the certainty and purpose out of the home side
Substitute Malick Fofana began to threaten and Thiago Almada skied an excellent chance over from the edge of the area
But United were rocking and they were unable to stabilise themselves before the French visitors levelled
This time there was an English element as Ainsley Maitland-Niles let fly with cross-shot that fizzed to Nicolas Tagliafico at the far post
the Argentina defender scuffed his effort but Andre Onana
could not prevent the ball crossing the line
It was a seven-minute spell that summed up everything that is bad about Amorim's team
with substitute Mainoo operating as a false nine and Mason Mount in support
not even after Tolisso had been unluckily dismissed for accidently tripping Yoro
there was greater purpose about Lyon and it was no real surprise when man of the match Rayan Cherki put the visitors ahead from the edge of the area in the first period of extra time
The jubilation that followed that goal was nothing compared to the celebrations after Lacazette sent Onana the wrong way from the spot after Yoro and Luke Shaw had combined to upend Fofana inside the penalty area

07/02/2023July 2, 2023More arrests but a calmer night French authorities made hundreds of arrests overnight into Sunday.
A total of 486 people had been arrested across France, the Interior Ministry said.
It added the level of violence appeared to have declined since rioting first broke out over the death of Nahel M. in the Paris suburb of Nanterre on Tuesday.
"A calmer night thanks to the resolute action of the security forces," Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin tweeted early Sunday.
Some 2,800 people have been arrested overall since the teen's death.
07/02/2023July 2, 2023More than 300 arrests over France unrestThe Interior Ministry said 322 people had been arrested nationwide on Saturday.
Among those arrested were 126 people in the Paris region, 56 in Marseille and 21 in Lyon, according to a provisional tally.
The situation was calmer in the early hours of Sunday morning than the previous four nights.
But tension remained in the capital, and there were sporadic clashes in Marseille, Nice, and the eastern city of Strasbourg.
07/02/2023July 2, 2023Police clash with rioters in MarseilleSporadic clashes between rioters and police have been reported in Marseille.
Police deployed tear gas against rioters in the city's main high street around dusk.
Later, videos posted on social media showed violence, some pillaging and street battles between police and groups of youths.
At least 56 people have been arrested in the city, according to French outlet BFMTV.
07/01/2023July 1, 2023Paris stores barricaded, minister urges insurers to pay promptlyCommercial buildings in Paris, particularly on the central Champs Elysees boulevard, were again barricaded up on Saturday, in a bid to protect them from damage overnight.
Various premium brands like Apple, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Lacoste, Nike and others have established their flagship stores on Paris' most exclusive commercial promenade.
Earlier on Saturday, France's Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire had appealed to insurers in the country to respond quickly to businesses claiming damages as a result of the riots.
"We have asked insurers to be as simple as possible in handling procedures," to "reduce deductibles as much as possible" and to compensate professional victims of the unrest "as quickly as possible."
Le Maire said that more than 700 shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bank branches had been "ransacked, looted and sometimes even burnt to the ground since Tuesday."
07/01/2023July 1, 2023Reinforcements bound for hotspots Marseille, Lyon, GrenobleFrench police and officials braced for another night of violence on Saturday, with a total of 45,000 security forces again made available for overnight deployment. That's the same figure as on the previous night.
But Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told reporters that additional forces and equipment would be sent to three of the worst-hit cities, Marseille, Lyon and Grenoble, which had appealed for additional support.
Numbers would be "considerably reinforced" in those cities, Darmanin said, "in order to completely restore republican order."
Marseille has already taken more restrictive measures than the capital Paris in a bid to get people off the streets in the evening. In Paris, buses and trams are stopping at 9 p.m. local time, but in Marseille, that is the case from 6 p.m. in the evening, with the underground metros also shut.
Armored vehicles and two additional helicopters were being sent to the city, France's second largest by population.
07/01/2023July 1, 2023French fashion house Celine cancels menswear show in ParisFrench fashion house Celine has canceled its menswear show in Paris this weekend.
"A fashion show in Paris, while France and its capital are bereaved and bruised, seems... inconsiderate and totally misplaced," Hedi Slimane, the creative director at Celine and an influential fashion designer and photographer, posted to Instagram.
Slimane wrote an update on his account in French, saying that while he was disappointed to cancel the show, there was uncertainty in the atmosphere following this week's protests.
That meant canceling the show was necessary for the security of his team and guests, Slimane said.
07/01/2023July 1, 2023Hundreds gather at Nanterre Mosque for French teenager's funeralSeveral hundred people lined up to enter the grand mosque at Nanterre, the Paris suburb where the 17-year-old named Nahel lived and where a police officer killed him earlier this week.
People gathered to mourn and pray, with a young woman of Arab descent telling Reuters news agency that she was there to support Nahel's family.
Nahel was of Algerian descent and lived with his mother in the town.
The shooting of the teenager has reignited calls for a check on police brutality against minorities.
07/01/2023July 1, 2023Macron postpones state visit to GermanyThe spokesperson for German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said President Emmanuel Macron has asked that a planned state visit to Germany be moved to another date as unrest continues in France.
Steinmeier's office said Macron asked to postpone his trip during a telephone conversation with the president on Saturday.
Steinmeier "regrets the cancelation and has the fullest understanding in view of the situation in our neighboring country," his office said.
The visit would be rescheduled as soon as possible, the German president's office said.
Macron was supposed to arrive Sunday and visit the cities of Ludwigsburg, Berlin and Dresden on Monday and Tuesday.
In March, a state visit to France by Britain’s King Charles III was postponed as Macron dealt with unrest over his effort to raise the retirement age.
07/01/2023July 1, 2023Over 1,350 cars set ablaze during night of riotingFrance's fourth consecutive night of riots over the police killing of a 17-year-old has seen over 1,350 cars torched, as part of 2,560 fires started on public roads, France's Interior Ministry said.
Police deployed some 45,000 officers on Friday night, including special units, to contain the violence.
Despite the heavy security presence, authorities said 31 police stations were attacked.
07/01/2023July 1, 2023Wave of arrests continues as police vie for controlFrench police have made 1,311 arrests on Friday night, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday, reporting 2,500 fires.
The number of those rounded up was the highest since the riots broke-out earlier in the week.
Nevertheless, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin claimed the violence was of "much less intensity."
The Interior Ministry reported a decrease in the number of fires started, cars burned and police stations attacked, compared to the night before.
Authorities said 79 police and firefighters were injured overnight. No tally for injured protesters was made available.
Darmanin ordered all public buses and trams nationwide to shut down during nighttime. The public transport vehicles have been targets of the rioters.
The interior minister also urged social media platforms not to allow themselves to be used as channels for calls to violence. He said the platforms were "very cooperative."
07/01/2023July 1, 2023Family of 17-year-old slain boy prepares for burialThe 17-year-old kid whose death sparked the riots is to be buried on Saturday.
The youth was shot at point blank range when he drove off at a traffic stop in Nanterre on Tuesday morning.
Previously, Nahel's mother told France 5 TV that she was angry at the officer who killed her son but not at the police in general.
"He saw a little Arab-looking kid, he wanted to take his life," the mother, who is of Algerian roots, said.
Nanterre Mayor Jarry said France needed to "push for changes'' in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
The Lyon County School District has joined the growing list of local agencies hit by hackers after a virus took down its systems earlier this month
Superintendent Wayne Workman confirmed to the Reno Gazette Journal on Monday afternoon that the school district is working to restore its systems after a virus made its way into the network
The cyber attack also took down services that were tied to the network
including the school district’s phone lines
“We’re still working to clean the virus out of our network,” Workman said
“We anticipate being up and running by the end of this week.”
Workman says he first learned about the cyber attack on the Lyon County School District on July 5.
Hackers are attacking local governmentsThe hack is the latest in a string of cyber attacks that have hit various local agencies across the country
The city of Baltimore has yet to fully recover from a vicious ransomware attack that hit its systems on May 7
taking down emails and phone lines while also restricting access to its database of parking fines
hackers gained access to tornado sirens in Dallas and were able to turn them on
In the Baltimore case, hackers demanded $76,000 in bitcoin in return for handing back control of the system. Baltimore refused to make the payments. On July 2, Las Vegas signed onto a Conference of Mayors resolution co-sponsored by Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Baltimore Mayor Bernard Young agreeing to not pay for ransomware attacks
IN COLORADO: Interpol intervenes in Fort Collins-Loveland Water District cyberattack
IN MARYLAND: 'Soft targets': Beleaguered Baltimore still reeling from a cyberattack. And that's just its latest woe
No details on whether Lyon County received ransom demandWorkman declined to comment on whether Lyon County received a ransom demand as part of the hack
citing an investigation by its insurance company and the FBI.
“I can confirm that the Lyon County School District has not made a payment (for ransom),” Workman said.
Workman also declined comment after being asked if a third party has made any ransom payments for the school district in relation to the hack
Members of the school district’s board have been appraised about the details of the hack and the results of an ongoing investigation
The investigation found no indication that any data such as student or employee information was stolen from the system
“All indications from our IT department and our cyber security expert from the insurance company is that no data left our network,” Workman said
“They locked us down instead of stealing information.”
Changes will be forthcoming once the system is back online
specifically with how often the school district does system backups
The school district will switch to daily backups to an offsite location instead of backing up its data each week or every other week
The school district will also inform the community once the issue with its systems is resolved
“We will be messaging out to our employees and to our students and families as soon as we have the system up and running,” Workman said
“(We ask the community to) be patient while we work through this issue.”

I first met Danny Lyon in the photographers’ room at Magnum Photos
he was passing through and I had just joined the collective
He greeted me by saying that he had just stolen my book Carnival Strippers from a local bookstore
with his immersive approach during the civil rights movement in the south
Then I bought The Bikeriders just as I began to do photography
but never thought I’d meet the man who took to the roads with them
He really became legendary with his powerful series on Texas prisoners Conversations with the Dead
but when I went off to the insurrection in Nicaragua a few years later
In fact it weighed too much for me to ever really use
but it meant a lot to me that he cared enough to send it
but I like to go back again and again to my subjects
You might want to check out his blog
Danny LyonRichard Avedon asked me that once; it was embarrassing
We were at a workshop he did with Marvin Israel at Avedon’s studio on 58th Street—one of these super vicious Manhattan art scenes
I showed pictures I made in whorehouses in Colombia in 1964
He was putting the pictures on the wall and kept sticking pushpins into the prints
you photographed bikers.” I was so upset that I went home and destroyed the work
It had Ricky Nelson on the soundtrack singing “Hello Mary Lou,” an incredible song I had heard in a whorehouse in Colombia
SMSo will the real Danny Lyon please stand up
My greatest strength has been empathy with others different from myself
would you give me a sense of your show at the Menil Collection
I was photographing the Texas prison system
when I was evicted from a farm I had rented next to the prisons
People quickly linked me up with Dominique de Menil
I ended up knowing Addie [Adelaide de Menil] really well through her work in the Hamptons—she remains a friend of mine
donated a big collection of my civil rights and prison work to the Menil Collection
The genesis of the show was to honor this gift
was a genius in mathematics who studied with Einstein
He and his wife Ginette donated about 20 vintage prints that I’d given them over the years
That took it up into the Colombian pictures and Los Niños Abandonados
some of which were shown at my Whitney Museum show in 2008
It also has a couple drawings by Billy McCune—one is a copy of a bikerider photograph
It has a couple of the SNCC [Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee] posters
four of the China photographs from Deep Sea Diver
and three of the ones I did at Occupy when I was staying in your house and borrowed your batteries to photograph Zucotti Park
It’s not a retrospective; there are only fifty or sixty pieces in it
I learned a lot of this from showing pictures with Mr
Hugh Edwards at the Art Institute of Chicago
I mix color and black-and-white and mix different sizes to have it be a good experience
I’d made a selection that I had sequenced in this rational order
I came in the day they were hanging the show
The pictures were all leaning up against the walls
There were these three guys from the union standing with their uniforms on
I’m looking at the work and what I see is simple montages: a picture with Stephanie in it
“It’s not arranged yet.” One of these union guys starts waving
we did it!” They had laid out the pictures in this totally cockamamy way: they had my two wives plus a girlfriend all together
“This is much better than the rational sequence that I had with series
and trying to make sense of the world and my work
Why don’t we leave it and just try and improve it?” So we broke up the three women and moved a couple things around and the show was great
and it didn’t impose a mindset on the viewer
SMYou do so much with fragments but also sequences
You’re always working toward something beyond the single frame
DLSo this time I show up in Houston to hang the show
Toby Kamps explains it needs to be chronological
beginning with my SNCC work and ending with Occupy fifty years later
The next morning I come into the empty gallery—the entire show is matted and framed and all laid out on the floor
By the time Toby shows up I’ve moved eight or nine
you can’t touch them,” and he calls a union guy to put the pictures back where they were
I’m doing a slow boil as Toby rejects out of hand every suggestion I make
looks it over and says there were too many prints
SMHow did you experience the work when you let it live on the wall isolated versus recontextualized in the way you were heading for originally
If I had asked you questions when you were in your early twenties
you probably would have given me very solid answers for them
You and I both graduated with a university degree
I was wondering if this university education helped me or hurt me as an artist
That’s where the question of being rational comes in
[Hugh] Edwards said something brilliant to me in a letter that I got when I was 21
He’d seen what would become The Bikeriders for the first time
so these were the earliest bikerider photographs
“Now for the first time you’ve stepped out from between the camera and the subject and
there’s more of you in these pictures than in anything you’ve ever done before.” There is this total contradiction
SMWhat had he seen before that to say that
He looked closely at the pictures and said
Start the Civil War all over again?” But back to this question about being rational when hanging photographs
I did learn from him that opposites help in photography
You tend to hurt pictures when they’re with similar things
The idea of taking 50 pictures that are in a show and shuffling them like a deck of cards is irrational
You’re breaking down the concepts that you’re imposing on the people looking at the pictures
SMI’m interested in the difference of doing that with a space and doing that with a book
you’re making very intentional juxtapositions and sequences
I’m doing a book now that covers a huge period of time
I decided to do it backward—that’s the first irrational thing
Have you ever read a letter that you wrote when you were 20
DLI have some letters to me from Hunter Thompson
DLWe exchanged postcards and some letters during that period
He talks about how you’ve got to wear a helmet on a motorcycle because it’s so dangerous
Thompson got beaten up badly by the Hells Angels
I hung out with the Outlaws and had no trouble with them
SMYou said earlier that you like to mix color and black-and-white pictures
I photographed the whorehouses of Cartagena
It’s the same business that the Secret Service is now sinning with
They can’t seem to tell the difference between a hooker
in this collection on view at the Menil there’s a lot of decision making on formats and mediums
SMSo you’re mostly working with thirty-five mm
but you shift to 2 1/4 inch and go back and forth
The civil rights period is all thirty-five mm and then with The Destruction of Lower Manhattan you’re working with a different format for the first time
DLEdwards had loaned me his Rolleiflex—that was the first 2 1/4 inch I used
because some of those pictures are square format
I had a funky old Leica M2 that scratched every picture
It was such a fabulous camera with a prism on it—no light meter
I had a 2 1/4 inch for The Bikeriders also
When I got to Manhattan in 1967 and realized what I was getting into
I went to Olden’s on Broadway and 43rd Street and got the cheapest view camera you could get—a Calumet
SMSo to what extent were you intentionally shifting formats
SMAnd there’s this tension between the intentional relationship that you pursue and the role played by the incidental or the accidental
I did so much in a very short time span—about seven years
with the civil rights movement and came out the other end with the Texas prison system—with SNCC
I was in my twenties during the entire time
I didn’t see any more worlds to conquer or a way to make a better photography book than Conversations with the Dead
I’m still out here in exactly the same spot
I leave SNCC in late 1964 and within two years I’m a member of an Outlaw motorcycle group that goes on a picnic and has a nine-foot original Nazi flag marking the spot
SMAnd you never wanted to know what happened to those people over time
I’m not a civil rights activist like the now Congressmen John Lewis or Julian Bond
I had my own thing that I was trying to do to the media and to the world
and I needed an overwhelmingly powerful subject in order to do it
Cal was my best friend in The Bikeriders and the lead narrator of the book
He called me from Long Island once after I had left the Outlaws
And I’m still friendly with Congressmen Lewis and Bond and others from SNCC
I recently visited a man who killed his wife and mother-in-law in succession
He was sentenced to life in prison when I met him in 1969
Glenn was let out after nine years because in the old days people were much more humane about prison sentences
He just wrote to say that he and his wife would visit the show in Houston
How did you see the bikeriders and prisoners
DLI was very romantic—they were heroes to me
I spent the first ten years of my life in a small two-bedroom apartment on Metropolitan Avenue in Kew Gardens looking out at the trolley cars going by
They had a parade down the street and airplanes flying over
I went into the world not knowing how to change tires or the oil on a motorcycle
I remember hitchhiking from Los Angeles and trying to get back to Chicago
Juan—I’m a proud employer of an illegal alien
look how lucky I’ve been.” You can imagine what his hands look like
He just left for Mexico because his mother died
he has to walk six days through the desert
I was photographing a coal worker who was a year younger than me who’d lived through the Cultural Revolution
His jacket was torn and his face was creased—he was very polite
I looked at his hands; they had the skin of an elephant
That man had been picking up coal and rocks and shovels his entire life
I immediately jump to the heroes of Occupy
How are they different than the heroes of SNCC
DLIt’s interesting to think about Occupy and SNCC
Here are the girls with the orange hair and a fifty-year-old guy with a bullhorn on a horse
There’s a lesbian woman who looks like she’s about fifty; I can tell she’s a leader
There’s an American Indian woman who looks forty-five and clearly is one of the so-called ringleaders
The next time I bring my NYPD press shield
I wanted to make a speech about the civil rights movement
unbelievably boring speech about Chicano politics
I was talking with Mary Charlotte on Radio Café
or about black people who went to jail or who got killed?” What’s so wonderful about this country is that this stuff is in their blood
They don’t have to know about the Freedom Riders
“I was in jail.” “I was in jail.” “With Martin Luther King.” “With Martin Luther King.” I got real worked up—everybody was chanting and it was really emotional
That’s the only time I ever really spoke at any of these meetings
but I can imagine with SNCC it wasn’t like you were on a reality show
how distanced could you be in the early years of SNCC
DLI’m a Jewish kid from Queens and I’m in Alabama
When I was doing the Texas prison photographs
They were the only guys I knew and they were inside the prison
DLSo I go inside and they’re watching a football game on this old black-and-white TV
I see these guards standing there at the main entrance
Did you write that?” And now I’m dealing with these crackers—it’s the real deal
This is an official document of the state of Texas.” Whoah
Is that crossing a line between observing and then interacting or acting upon
I came within twenty seconds of doing a classic nonviolent sit-down in the street
They were just pushing me around telling me
“Stand over there!” All this asinine stuff they do to photographers
I was caught up in the excitement of Occupy LA; I wanted to be part of it
I wanted to get attention and say the cops were wrong and I was right
SMI’m thinking about how people are now using iPhones
Everyone is documenting themselves being in the action
Rodney King was a kind of fluke—someone was on a porch with a video camera
In terms of the forces of good versus evil
SMDo you think there will be an ongoing role for the insiders versus the outsiders that we’re talking about
there’s a professional versus a nonprofessional
I’m more interested in the truth and that the good guys win
I like to make photographs of things that don’t show other cameras in the frame
I have a great picture in downtown LA with a bunch of people holding cameras up
SMIf you have images of people making images
DLThere’s a lot of great beauty in amateur photography
What is the difference between a member of Magnum and an amateur photographer
we do the rest.” The real loss in the digital revolution is the print
and I was showing her my first digital album
And then I showed her another album of Polaroids that I’d kind of abandoned
“Look how beautiful the Polaroids are and look how shit-horrible digital prints are.”
it’s not even about ever making a print—it’s just virally passing images around
You don’t know the artist behind the images
DLLarry McMurtry said we come from a different age
My target was reality and influencing Americans through television and the printed form
Now you’re talking about something so vast that everything’s lost in it
SMIf you were riding on the back of the motorcycle now and the guy in front of you was shooting as he went with his iPhone—which is probably what he’d be doing today—what would you make
Would you be making it collaboratively with him in the way that you did Conversations with the Dead
with Billy McCune drawing and not using a camera at all
Out of him poured this incredible body of work over a period of two or three years
of all places—that’s where I was living then
So that’s a relationship with a single person
If someone were taking pictures on the motorcycle
I wouldn’t want to be on the motorcycle with them
And I wouldn’t want to take pictures of them
I liked the motorcyclists because they were down and dirty and antiestablishment big time
SMWhat do you mean when you say that you “can’t stand collaboration”
It was clear in my mind that I was using this guy to make a film
I assembled the book and then hustled it in New York City
Someone sent me a photograph from Canada of Cal reading The Bikeriders
Here’s what I was doing.” I got inside—I was a devious person and I didn’t give a fuck about what anyone felt
I got on my horse like the Lone Ranger and went on till I found something else to keep me busy
the Lone Ranger was a Texas Ranger—the Texas version of the Ku Klux Klan
The Lone Ranger was one of these guys; he had fucked up in his past
Yet in the ’50s he was this superhero I identified with
SMSo why when you’re working on the book Indian Nations do you want to give them the pictures
I want to be honest about this person I was forty years ago
you were not supposed to live to be thirty
Many of my friends died in airplane crashes
I love the idea of showing these pictures to my subjects and having them come see them
I got an email from one of the girls I had photographed
that neighborhood was inhabited by some of the poorest white Americans
They were from Appalachia and lived in wretched conditions on a couple of streets on the North Side
It’s my sister who’s holding the baby.” I’m enchanted
these people were really not considered people
But by now this woman is a middle-class person
and writes me an amazing email saying that most of her friends had died young
And here’s what sent chills down my spine: She writes that she loved being in Uptown
she wants her friends to sneak her ashes back into the neighborhood and dump them in the dirt on Clifton Street
She gave me permission to publish her email in the first Phaidon book
SMThe big thing that has changed for you is your caring or wanting your subjects to know how you represented them
and I was concerned that they’d check on me
Nobody did anything—I never did get into the coal mines
SMMaybe they didn’t think you were dangerous enough
I can’t imagine anyone spending a month wandering around in Shanxi with two Leicas without state security saying
what are you doing?” Seven years ago there was an opening and I took it
SMI’m thinking about the days in which you believed that by documenting something
That you could influence America—and affect people with books
DLI thought of myself as a journalist back then
ninety-nine percent of those people don’t have a fucking clue in terms of what they’re doing taking pictures
most of these people in Oakland can’t go to Zucotti Park
They’re cooking lunch for each other or cleaning up their tents
They’re not wandering around taking pictures like me
SMWhat’s the difference of that vision versus the vision from within
My mother had this library: Einstein was in there
Look what he accomplished.” That’s the background I came from
The other interesting thing is how much you looked at others in the early period
Then you made this shift—collaging the family photos
I have four children and they became my subject also
in which I would like to achieve a deeper level of honesty
I was struck by the fact that I wept so much longer when he passed than I did when my first cousin died
If I can bring some of that to my work and get it out on ink and paper and pass it to others and have that then resonate with their own latent emotions
We have the work of people in museums who are honored because they’re artists—they help move that human amoeba forward an inch by a quarter of an inch at a time by digging through with their own vision and consciousness
It’s a vision that I protect and do not want to share until it’s ready

Ajax coach Frank de Boer has urged UEFA to investigate Lyon's improbable 7-1 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday
which cost the Dutch side a place in the last 16
Lyon qualified for the knockout stage at Ajax's expense after they overturned a seven-goal deficit
beat Dinamo away and saw Ajax lose 3-0 at home to Real Madrid after having two goals ruled out
No laughing matter: Keeper Ivan Kelava is beaten for one of Lyon's goals but still smiles at the end
The French club had scored only two goals in their five previous Group D matches and were 1-0 down to 10-man Dinamo
yet equalised just before half-time and hit six goals in 30 minutes
That included a seven-minute hat-trick for Bafetimbi Gomis
A front-page headline in French newspaper L'Equipe on Thursday called the turnaround miraculous
Winking: Domagoj Vida gestures towards Bafetimbi Gomis
Further suspicions were raised by an image that appears to show Dinamo defender Domagoj Vida winking at Gomis after Lisandro scored Lyon's fifth
De Boer said: 'If there was something unusual
UEFA should investigate what happened in Zagreb
'My assistants have told me that the goals came quick and easy
because you can't normally score these goals in half an hour
Heading through: Bafetimbi Gomis(right) celebrates with Mouhamadou Dabo
'At half-time I saw Zagreb were ahead 1-0
then in the dressing room (after the match) I heard it was 7-1
This is what you imagine in your worst dreams.'
Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer added: 'It's indescribable
We knew we might lose to Madrid but we didn't imagine Lyon would win by such a margin.'
But UEFA say they have no plans to investigate Lyon's win and last night insisted any further examination was 'not justified'
The organisation's betting fraud detection system
Tale of two managers: Frank de Boer and Remi Garde
also found 'no particular anomaly' - either in the total amount gambled or the number of bets placed
English referee Mark Clattenburg was in charge at the Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb and UEFA could yet act if he or his team mention anything suspicious in their reports
A Lyon statement said they approved of ARJEL's probe after an 'atypical' result
but regretted 'comments are not being limited to the sporting aspect of an incredible exploit'
Heading out: Gonzalo Higuain celebrates after scoring for Real Madrid against Ajax
UEFA's French president Michel Platini said he had 'no doubts whatsoever about the integrity of the match or the competition'
who sacked coach Krunoslav Jurcic straight after the match
described speculation about the result as 'shameful
'(It's) a defeat that was hard to imagine,' the club added
UEFA said in a statement they consider the integrity of their competitions
'For the time being (the betting fraud detections system) has not shown any irregular betting patterns,' they said

Dinamo Zagreb's Domagoj Vida was seen winking after Lisandro Lopez scored Lyon's fifth goal
Uefa will not open an investigation at this stage into Lyon's thumping 7-1 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb after their own Betting Fraud Detection System did not detect any irregular betting patterns surrounding the match
Lyon have backed the decision of the French online gaming authority (ARJEL) to run checks on bets placed on the result
which in combination with Ajax's 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid was enough to take the French club into the last 16
Uefa have yet to receive reports from the match referee or match delegate but say at this stage they have not seen anything which warrants further investigation
A statement from Uefa read: "Uefa is aware of
of the press coverage surrounding yesterday's games and the various allegations made by the media
"Uefa also considers the integrity of its own competitions
as an absolute priority and pays extra attention to all games
"We have also implemented a Betting Fraud Detections System (BFDS) as a tool against match-fixing – a system which monitors 29,000 games a season including all Uefa matches
and utilises data from more than 400 betting companies
"For the time being this system has not shown any irregular betting patterns around yesterday's games or their outcome that would justify any inquiry on that front."
Uefa's statement continued: "Uefa also pays a lot of attention to the sporting behaviour on the pitch and we are currently waiting to receive the reports of the referee
referee observer and match delegate to see if
"If there is anything in these reports that could raise a doubt
Uefa may then charge a disciplinary inspector to investigate the matter
But there is nothing at this stage that would justify doing so."
Lyon scored six times in the second half as they came from 1-0 down to incredibly book their place in the knockout stage
The club released a statement today saying they understood the checks by ARJEL were necessary in the case of such an "atypical" result
The statement on their official website read: "Lyon have become aware of the checks being carried out this morning by ARJEL
which fit with the procedures of the agency responsible for the regulation of online gaming
"The club agree totally that action should be taken when a result is considered atypical."
The Red Devils were 2-0 up and cruising thanks to first-half goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, but Ruben Amorim's side, whose preparation for the second leg was less than ideal following a miserable 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend
contrived to a throwaway their advantage within the space of six second-half minutes
A close-range header from Lyon captain Corentin Tolisso was followed up a scrappy Nicolas Tagliafico goal
before the former was sent off before full-time for a second bookable offence
United failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage and Old Trafford was stunned when a breakaway led by substitute Malick Fofana saw Rayan Cherki, who scored the equaliser to earn Lyon a 2-2 draw in the pair's first leg meeting last Thursday
fire a scorching low effort past a motionless Andre Onana
Fofana was then hauled down in the penalty area via a combination of Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro
and former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette sent Onana the wrong way to make it 4-2 on the night with just ten minutes left to play
All in attendance were understandably shellshocked by what they had seen
but they didn't have time to draw breath as Bruno Fernandes reduced the arrears after converting a penalty awarded for a foul on Casemiro
substitute Kobbie Mainoo fired United level on the night
bending a terrific effort into the far corner
got on the end of Casemiro's floated cross to bury a header past the statuesque Lucas Perri in goal
The goal sparked pandemonium in the stands
with the final whistle moments later sealing a famous win for United while providing a real shot in the arm for Amorim and his players
