France — This colorful French port town exudes Mediterranean charm and chaotic energy
is often overlooked and misunderstood by French and foreign tourists alike
Filmmaker and Marseille native Vérane Frédiani is looking to change that
She wants you to discover her hometown by following your stomach
and she’s written a cookbook to help you do it
Frédiani leads readers through the ancient city’s diverse neighborhoods and layers of history
to discover Marseille’s recipes and culinary traditions
The beautifully photographed book of recipes and rich storytelling serves equally as a guide to the city, which might explain why publisher La Martinière says the book has been one of its bestsellers
Through conversations with chefs and anecdotes from her own childhood
Frédiani serves up a multicultural city brimming with energy
ideas and talented chefs who she says are revolutionizing French cuisine
Frédiani's laugh and joie de vivre are infectious as she converses with NPR at an outdoor cafe in the bustling Nouailles district
outdoor markets trade in vegetables and spices more often seen in Africa and Asia
but increasingly used in restaurants across this port town
Frédiani says her book celebrates Marseille’s diversity
I always heard people saying ‘Marseille is not France,’ ” she says
“And I didn’t understand what they meant by this
Now she knows that the city’s multicultural DNA is also its allure
Marseille has been a melting pot of cultures since it was founded by the Greeks 2,500 years ago
Frédiani's own family has roots in Italy and Tunisia
She says Marseille is different from other French towns
“You don’t have to be in Marseille for generations to call yourself a Marseillais,” she explains
Everybody is Marseillais within five minutes
The moment you arrive here and you like it here
One of the chefs profiled in her book is Hugues Mbenda
a 35-year-old French Congolese chef who opened his restaurant in Marseille five years ago
The restaurant is known by two names — and identities: Libala by day
Mbenda worked in Michelin-star establishments in Paris and London
the key to cooking is mastering the basics
blanquette of veal,” he says going through the classic dishes you’ve got to learn by heart
Mbenda marries French dishes with African flavors
Chilis and mango sauce on a traditional cut of French beef
A bit of baobab mixed into a creamy Hollandaise sauce
“But it’s also like a small city because people talk together
Mbenda’s is just one of many wonderful chef stories in Frédiani’s cookbook
which adds tips designed for non-French speakers
was translated by American food writer Alexis Steinman
Steinman admits that Marseille can be hard to understand
“You can’t visit it with a checklist of monuments
who said Marseille is not a city of sights — it’s a site within itself,” Steinman explains
Steinman says she was amazed by Frédiani’s book
neighborhoods and ingredients that make this chaotic and colorful Mediterranean port tick
She knew there had to be an English translation
“I never translated anything before,” Steinman says
“but this really felt like a passion project and we wanted to share it with the world
Because Marseille has been under wraps for so long.”
Marseille will host Olympic sailing and soccer during the 2024 Summer Games
the city put on a spectacular ceremony to welcome the Olympic flame that arrived in France from Greece
crossing the Mediterranean on a three-masted sailing ship
If there is one dish for which this Mediterranean port is known
this stew of leftover fish parts and vegetables was traditionally a poor man‘s dish
though today it’s become a luxury in Marseille’s old port restaurants
Frédiani says most Marseillais don't eat their bouillabaisse out
“Marseille today is basically still a poor city,” she says
“And we don’t want to pretend to be something else.”
Iconic U.S. chef of French cuisine, Julia Child, prepared bouillabaisse for an episode of The French Chef
She affectionately described the stew as having part of Marseille itself cooked right into it
“You can somehow just taste the flavor and the color and the excitement of that old port,” Child said in a video from the 1970s
she haggles with fishmongers in the city’s fish market
plunging herself into the Marseillais food culture
Child described “Marseille’s hot noise as so different from Paris’ cool sophistication.”
Steinman says Child exemplified how Marseille opens itself up to foreigners who take an interest in the city
she serves a soup made from Mediterranean green crabs and a dish of roasted leeks with a crumble of crushed dried shrimp shells
Dijon cooked with her father and fished with her mother — catching the same green crabs in her soup of the day
She studied law in university before abruptly changing career paths to realize her dream
Dijon believes that this is Marseille’s culinary and cultural moment
“There is a spirit of openness and freedom,” she says
anytime — gastronomically and otherwise — it’s inside us
Dijon cooks with top-quality local products and is committed to limiting food waste; she says she throws nothing away
“It’s sort of a mix of Italian and Spanish
but it has that French style and that French rigueur that I find really interesting,” he gushes
Couscous restaurant La Fémina opened its doors in the heart of Marseille’s Nouailles district 121 years ago
Mustapha Kachetel is the restaurant’s fourth-generation owner
Pictures line the walls of this colorfully decorated restaurant opened by his great-great-grandfather in 1921, including one of Kachetel with the late U.S. chef and food travel TV host Anthony Bourdain, who ate at La Fémina
Kachetel says Bourdain loved the barley couscous
which is emblematic of the Kabylie region of northern Algeria
Frédiani says couscous is as much a favorite here as bouillabaisse — perhaps even more so
Every September Marseille holds a couscous festival
and hundreds of long tables are set up in the street
Tell Americans it’s a great time to visit.”
Frédiani says the people of Marseille are eager to tell you about their food and their city

Women’s and Mixed Dinghies will have been watching the windsurfing and skiff competition racing from the early days of the Olympic Regatta
They’ve been getting in their final training sessions on the water and pushing their boats through the registration and measurement process in readiness for their first day of racing
The Men’s and Women’s Dinghies start on Thursday 1 August and Mixed Dinghy on Friday 2 August
Here’s a rundown of what to expect from the next three events on the Olympic Sailing roster
meaning that the sailors need to bring little more than their own wetsuit
buoyancy aid and hiking boots to go racing
this has been Olympic equipment since the Beijing 2008 Games
As reigning Olympic and World Champion and Denmark’s flag bearer at the Paris Opening Ceremony
Anne-Marie Rindom starts as favourite in the Women’s Dinghy
However the Dane knows that fierce competition will come from many quarters
not least from Emma Plasschaert of Belgium and Marit Bouwmeester of The Netherlands
gold and bronze at the past three Games and now aged 34
as well as the mother of two-year-old Jessie
she is looking for a fourth to add to the collection
Plasschaert is a two-time World Champion and finished fourth at Tokyo 2020
so the Belgian will be massively motivated to reach the Paris podium
while others to keep an eye on include Switzerland’s Maud Jayet
Norway’s Line Flem Hoest and 2023 World Champion Maria Erdi from Hungary
This is the same supplied equipment as used by the women
except that the ILCA 7 has a taller mast and larger sail for the Men’s Dinghy
this has been Olympic equipment since the Atlanta 1996 Games
Matt Wearn has been the pre-eminent athlete in the Men’s Dinghy over the past number of years
Australia has dominated this event over the past decade or more
starting with Tom Slingsby’s gold at London 2012 followed by Tom Burton’s gold at Rio 2016 and then Wearn doing it again for fans downunder with his victory at Tokyo 2020
Wearn had a terrible first day in Tokyo after some equipment failure but proved so dominant in the latter stages of the 2020 Games that he secured gold before the Medal Race
He still starts as favourite but Great Britain’s Micky Beckett – who was working on the TV last time after missing selection – has closed the gap on the Australian
There are some tight training groups who have all been working together to raise each other’s game
has been working closely with xx World Champion from Germany
At London 2012 Pavlos Kontides won the first and
only ever medal for Cyprus in any Olympic sport and has remained at the top of his game ever since
There are so many other potential medallists in this strong fleet of 40 entries
among them Italy’s Lorenzo Chiavarini and New Zealand’s Thomas Saunders
The 470 has been in the Games since Montreal 1976
Half a century ago it was considered high performance equipment but such is progress it’s now one of the slower craft in the Olympic programme
However it’s a great boat for any breeze from 4 to 40 knots and probably the most adaptable across the range of wind and wave conditions
It’s also highly tactical and rewards a huge range of skills
Since the 470 shifted from Men’s and Women’s Doublehanders after the Tokyo Games to the new setup of women and men sailing together in the Mixed Dinghy
It has taken a while for mixed teams to get established but the strongest and most consistent duo of recent seasons are Spain’s Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman
Xammar took bronze at Tokyo in the Men’s Doublehander and with Brugman this partnership has won the World and European titles in early 2024
Double Olympic bronze medallist Camille Lecointre with Jeremie Mion (FRA) look very strong for a podium performance on home waters
and last year’s dominant victory at the World Championship marks out Japan’s Keiju Okada and Miho Yoshioka as a strong bet for a top three performance
After coming through an incredibly competitive national trial
Germany’s Simon Diesch and Anna Markfort have learned a lot about dealing with pressure
If the wind blows the Germans will be one of the fastest on the race track
Almost 50 years ago at the Montreal Games of 1976
brothers Jörg and Eckart Diesch won Olympic gold in the Flying Dutchman

which will keep him at the club until June 2026

A spate of murders — one involving a 15-year-old burned alive and another committed by a 14-year-old hitman-for-hire — has caused an uproar over the drug war plaguing France's second-biggest city
Outrage has swept France as it became apparent the two Marseille teenagers were recruited as hitmen over social media by a 23-year-old member of the so-called "New Blacks" gang — detained in a prison located in the southern French city of Aix-en-Provence
The two murders — committed only two days apart — are part of an ongoing war between two rival gangs
known as DZ Mafia and another called the New Blacks
The rival gangs are embroiled in a turf war over a drug dealing spot located in Marseille's 3rd arrondissement
repeatedly making national headlines for drug busts and killings
Marseille’s public prosecutor Nicolas Bessone told a press conference on Sunday that once recruited by the inmate
the 15-year-old teen was tasked with setting alight a rival dealer's front door in exchange for a fee of €2,000
the 15-year-old was approached by rival gang members
the teenager was"stabbed 50 times and taken to the Fonscolombes housing estate
The inmate who had recruited the boy did not end things there
to whom he offered a fee of €50,000 to murder a rival gang member
The teenager — who was previously known to the police — has been in social care since he was nine
Accepting the job and accompanied by a friend
he ordered a Bolt ride to the Félix Pyat neighbourhood
the teenager asked the 36-year-old taxi driver
the 14-year-old shot him in the back of the head
Bessone said it was the inmate who called the police to report the boy's location
The boy had fled to hide and admitted to the killing after he was apprehended but claimed it was an accident
The inmate behind the recruitment appeared before a judge on Sunday and was charged in the case
The public prosecutor has since announced the opening of several investigations into these two cases
looking into “murder in an organised gang” for the 15-year-old burned to death
For the death of 36-year-old Nessim Ramdane
the investigation will focus on the “criminal conspiracy to commit a crime” and “premeditated murder in an organised gang”
Bessone stated that the situation in the city of some 860,000 has reached “a whole other level”
expressing his concern at the fact that boys were being recruited at such a young age
Marseille's public prosecutor spoke about the growing violence in the city with Euronews in March
warning of further escalation caused by what he said was “money that flows
dealers have been targeting vulnerable youth in search of quick cash
Drug-related deaths in Marseille reached an all-time high last year
things appeared to have changed for the better when figures revealed that the number of drug-related deaths had been slashed in three for the period of January to September 2024
Yet, this is not a quick fix issue, as French politicians have spent decades battling about how to deal with this situation, while many residents accuse authorities of leaving them behind.
France's drug trafficking market currently rakes in €3 billion a year. A drug dealing spot can generate anywhere between €25 and €90,000 in a single day, while five to 10 drug dealing points are dismantled daily in Marseille alone.
Last year, French authorities seized 7 tonnes of cannabis, €21 million in criminal assets and 107 assault rifles in the region around France’s second-largest city.
Predicted lineups are available for the match a few days in advance while the actual lineup will be available about an hour ahead of the match

which will gather bishops and young people from the Mediterranean basin on 17-24 September
The visit will mark his 44th Apostolic Journey abroad
According to the schedule released by the Holy See Press Office on Saturday
Pope Francis will depart from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport early in the afternoon of Friday
arriving at Marseille International Airport at 4.15 pm
There he will be welcomed by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron

Pope Francis will then address the final session of the “Rencontres Méditerranéennes” at the “Palais du Pharo”
where he will also meet with President Macron
the Pope is scheduled to preside over Holy Mass at the “Vélodrome Stadium” before departing from Marseille's International Airport to Rome
where he is scheduled to arrive at 8.50 pm
Marseille is the second French city visited by Pope Francis during his pontificate
On 25 November 2014 he made a mere day trip to Strasbourg
to address the European Parliament and the Council of Europe
He will also be the first Pope to visit the multi-ethnic southern French port city since Clement VII did so in 1533
The Mediterranean Meetings are organized and hosted by the Archdiocese of Marseille at the behest of its archbishop

the Rencontres Méditerranéennes will gather Catholic bishops and young people of different Christian denominations and religions from the 30 Mediterranean countries to launch a message of hope and dialogue
responding to Pope Francis' call for a culture of encounter
Commenting on the planned Papal visit, Cardinal Avelin said to Vatican News that by coming to Marseille Pope Francis continues the “Mediterranean pilgrimage” he started in Lampedusa in July 2013
followed by his Apostolic Journeys to several Mediterranean cities including Jerusalem
the Pope has brought a message of hope and has repeatedly pleaded for making the Mediterranean Sea not “a cemetery”
the Pope shows his particular attention to the peoples of the Mediterranean”, Cardinal Avelin said. “He comes to Marseille to draw our attention to the Mediterranean
and the mission that belongs to Christ's disciples in this region of the world”

Great Britain is the most successful Olympic Sailing nation, and they scored again at the Paris 2024 Olympic Test Event held on July 9-16. Matched by only France in the medal count with five, Team GB offers this assessment of the Olympic Sailing venue in Marseille
Over 400 miles away from the bustling French capital of Paris
there’s another Olympic venue ready to explode
As Paris transforms into the capital of sport next summer
the world’s best sailors will descend on the Roucas-Blanc Marina
with a total of 10 events taking place on the water
But the country’s oldest city is not to be taken lightly
providing some unique and difficult challenges for the Olympic class of 2024
mixed with a hot Mediterranean climate and dry winds from the Sahara
make the Marseille Marina an unpredictable and tough venue for sailing
Knowledge that ILCA 7 sailor and two-time Trofeo Princesa Sofia winner Michael Beckett is acutely aware of
“Marseille is an incredibly hectic place,” said Beckett
“It’s an incredibly tough place to sail – very unpredictable
It’s a very narrow shaped bay with high land all around it
hot city and in terms of the meteorology of the place
“In Tokyo we had onshore breezes that were quite predictable and generally quite stable
you can have really strong winds that blow everything away
You can also have days where lots of wind is forecast but you go out on the water and it’s just a calm
Managing expectations there will be absolutely critical.”
But it was the learnings taken from the conditions of Marseille that were most vital
silver medalist in the women’s 49erFX sailor alongside Olympian Saskia Tidey
noting the heat of the venue as one of her biggest competitors
“Marseille is a challenging venue and I think it will definitely reward a versatile sailor,” she said
“You can get any kind of conditions on any given day here which I think is really cool
It’s great being in 28 degrees (82°F) weather but I definitely need to adapt to it a bit quicker!”
Tokyo 2020 silver medalists Anna Burnet and John Gimson clinched bronze in the mixed Nacra 17 after a week of mixed results at the Test event
And with the atmosphere of a mock Olympics in the air
Burnet was relishing being back in the unique environment
I would describe Marseille as ‘challenging’,” said Burnet
it’s a small bay surrounded by lots of high and hot land
it’s unpredictable and all our weather people will have a hard job
But it’s a venue that if we can get right going forward

Marseille have agreed a deal with Watford to sign winger Ismaila Sarr
The 25-year-old is scheduled to undergo a medical on Monday and personal terms are in place ahead of the proposed transfer being completed
Sarr has a year left to run on his current contract with the Championship side but there have been no meaningful talks about an extension at Vicarage Road
Follow the summer transfer window with The Athletic…
Aston Villa came close to signing the Senegal international last summer, while Crystal Palace and Tottenham have previously monitored his situation
who played at the World Cup in Qatar last year
with his playing style viewed as a perfect match for Marseille coach Marcelino
Sarr joined Watford from Rennes for a club-record transfer fee of £28.8million
He made 39 appearances for Watford in all competitions last season
scoring 10 goals and recording six assists

Antibes is home to a peninsula that juts out into the sea

How to get there: Whether you're coming from Cannes, Nice, Marseille, or tiny Toulon, you'll have to take a ferry from Port de la Tour Fondue on the Giens peninsula. From there, travel time to the Porquerolles Island is just 15 minutes—just be sure to book your ticket early
especially if you're visiting in the summer season
a beach lined with cliffs and dunes with tidal pools to explore at low tide
Stay here: Make time to book plenty of hydrotherapy treatments at Castel Clara
a Relais & Chateaux property perched on a clifftop on the island’s southwest coast
you have to take a boat to Belle-Île from Quiberon
a small French commune on a peninsula of the same name
Belle-Île perhaps belongs best on an itinerary that hits all of these places
as it's a bit too involved as a day trip from the capital.)
where you can cross those famous pools in your bare feet
Stay here: The grand estate of Château d’Audrieu is surprisingly perfect for families
How to get there: Getting to Normandy from Paris, a car is the simplest option; the drive takes about four hours—time it right (and depending on the time of year), you'll catch the bay at low tide during sunset
Cap Coz has a string of small beaches that are never crowded
Start walking on the peninsula’s hiking path along the Breton Riviera
and you’ll easily see the entire rocky coastline
complete with sheltered bays great for afternoon swims
Stay here: If you want to stay close to the cape, the Hôtel Belle Vue in Fouesnant is a sweet little mom-and-pop where the owners personally greet you when you arrive
How to get there: The nearest big city is Quimper; it's a 30-minute drive from Cap Coz
Quimper is a cool little spot—check out the twin Gothic spires of the Quimper Cathedral and the town's Faience Museum featuring its distinctive faience pottery—just four hours by TGV from the French capital
but keep an eye out for the now-abandoned German bunker from World War II
Stay here: You can’t beat the port-side location of Hotel de Toiras—and the uniquely decorated rooms overlooking the garden certainly don’t hurt either
connected to the mainland by Pont de l'île de Ré
is roughly equidistant from both Nantes and Bordeaux
both about two hours away by car (both cities are easily accessible from Paris by high-speed train)
You can take a plane into either city from many European capitals
you may as well book a ticket to Aéroport La Rochelle (LRH)

FeatureFrom the Place de la République in Paris to the Canebière in Marseille
left-wing voters gathered to celebrate the unexpected score of the Nouveau Front Populaire alliance
RN members and sympathizers expressed their disappointment
The party is more fun when it's improvised, the joy all the more intense when it is unexpected. Several thousand Parisians gathered in Place de la République on Sunday, July 7, to watch the results of the second round of legislative elections
to "weep together" at the victory that all the polls were promising the far-right Rassemblement National (RN)
as elusive as a tipping point between two worlds
telephones buzzed and a huge roar set the crowd ablaze
the shouts of joy rose in many parts of the country
where candidates with the left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP) coalition won all four constituencies
It also swept through the streets of Ménilmontant
a left-wing area in the east of the capital
like the thrill of victory in a World Cup final spreading from window to window
In the bars on Rue Sorbier in the 20th arrondissement
while locals shouted their incredulous joy from balconies
Léna and Camille looked as if they were having a bad day as they melted into a crowd of some 500 people to share the moment they had been dreading
"We came here to find support and show our opposition to the far right
Now we're ready to share our relief!" said the three medical students

Everyone knows that person who spends weeks sniffing around travel blogs, going deep into Tripadvisor rabbit holes, collecting Google docs from friends of friends, and creating A Beautiful Mind–style spreadsheets to come up with the best vacations and itineraries possible
we find those people who’ve done all the work for you and have them walk us through a particularly wonderful
especially well-thought-out vacation they took that you can actually steal
which is between Marseille and Aix-en-Provence
and then my dad picks me up and we drive about 45 minutes
passing Aix-en-Provence to my dad’s village
You can spot poppy fields (in late spring) or lavender fields (in summer)
The dream, for me, is Villa La Coste (2750 Route de la Cride, 13610 Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade), which is in the middle of Château La Coste
Le Moulin de Lourmarin (Av
84160 Lourmarin) is in the most charming village; the hotel is in an old bastide
very typical of Provence and what you can see in movies
The food is incredible and the pool is a dream
I’m a big proponent of Airbnb
You want to have the chance to cook because the food is so incredible
It’s a great option for a family or if you travel with friends
Then I put on a swimsuit and linen shirt and get a French lemonade
which is lemon and water or lemon and sparkling water
I walk around the garden until I lie by the pool and listen to the sounds
and take in the smells of the apricot and fig trees
It’s about a 45-minute walk through fields of lavender
I try to wake up early to stop the jet lag
and then go on a hike with my husband before it gets too hot
The trail ends at a church above the village with a view of the valley
We walk back down and have a beautiful breakfast. My dad goes to this famous bakery, Boulangerie du Griffoul (89 Rue du Lavoir
to get the best bread made with local ancient grains
We usually have toast with salted butter and jam that my dad makes from fruit from the garden
Because my husband is American and loves French food, especially French cheeses, we go to the food co-op Le Luberon Paysan (176 Bd Saint-Roch, 84240 La Tour-d’Aigues), which sells local organic and raw goat and sheep cheeses. It also sells fruits and veggies and huge bouquets of basil. So we buy the food that we love. Then we head to Domaine des Jardinettes (635 Rte
84530 Villelaure) to pick up organic wines
All of my family meets at my dad’s home: my sister and her husband and her kids
we have apéro by the pool — the rosé we picked up earlier
and then head into the kitchen to make dinner
we’ll head to the Aix-en-Provence market (Pl
we’ll check out the fabulous selection at the Lourmarin market (2 Av
mixes of things you want to have even if you’re not a tourist
which drives my husband crazy because he knows I have many
The espadrilles and little flowery dresses are a must too
I buy soaps to use on the trip and take home
Bring an empty suitcase for your souvenirs
After shopping, we pick a little restaurant and walk around the streets. Usually, there’s a great church to visit or an old castle that’s still open, depending on where we are. In Aix-en-Provence, we’ll walk on Cours Mirabeau, visit Atelier de Cezanne (9 Av
it’s beautiful to see and has nice (expensive) shopping
even if it’s a bit manicured for the locals
We love visiting other local villages such as Bonnieux
Even if staying at Villa La Coste is a dream, my husband and I love to walk among the incredible art on the grounds of Château La Coste (2750 Route de la Cride
Get a coffee or aperitif at its more relaxed restaurant
Michelin star La Petite Maison de Cucuron (Pl
84160 Cucuron) is located in a little house by a pond in the middle of the town with beautiful trees
The Provençale menu is a bit rich but delicious
It’s one of those exceptional places where
We set off for Marseille to stay at Hotel Tuba (2 Bd Alexandre Delabre
13008 Marseille) in the village of Les Goudes
It’s a simple building but nicely decorated inside with excellent choices
The menu is fun; the owner is fun; and there’s a good crowd and a cool atmosphere in the evening
A lot of people go there just for lunch or just for dinner
We walk down the rocks and jump into the transparent navy blue sea
we would probably take a little Airbnb house
And there are lots of little villages that have more and more options because Marseille is becoming trendy
We book lunch at La Baie des Singes (Cap Croisette
13008 Marseille) in advance and then walk around the city of Marseille
and café gourmand (espresso that comes with three mini desserts)
view the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde (Rue Fort du Sanctuaire
and check out the up-and-coming Le Panier neighborhood
Then we go over to Cité Radieuse (280 Bd Michelet
It’s fantastic to see and walk into; we go to the open floors
and sometimes we meet a resident who agrees to show us their place
Maison Empereur (4 Rue des Récolettes
France) has everything you can imagine for self and home like sheepskin slippers and enamel glasses
It’s that store everybody goes to for anything you can imagine in a vintage vibe
I could spend half a day just looking at everything
If we are in the mood for exploring, we head to Calanques National Park
After spending time in nature, we head back to the village of Les Goudes and enjoy the bouillabaisse at Grand Bar des Goudes (28 Rue Désiré Pelaprat
we drive from Marseille to Saint-Paul-de-Vence
It’s one of the most famous villages in the south of France
It’s on top of a cliff with a view of the Mediterranean Sea
We made a reservation for lunch at La Colombe d’Or (Place du Général de Gaulle
and strawberries and Chantilly for dessert
The hotel and restaurant are as private as Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles but way more special
There is a beautiful piece by Calder by the pool
And the pool is mythical and only accessible if you stay there
After lunch, we walk across the street to the modern art museum Fondation Maeght (623 Chemin des Gardettes
It has art inside and outside and a lot of Joan Miró’s work
We selected one of its fabulous posters for home
And the last thing we do every year is see the chapel that Matisse designed, Chapelle du Rosaire (466 Avenue Henri Matisse
He hand-painted the windows; it’s breathtaking
I love a flirty dress for nights out that can take you from a sunset aperó to dancing
especially if you rent a scooter to go from one calanque to the next
A great Turkish towel is still the best and lightest to travel with
I love a white linen shirt for day and night; my favorite is from Uniqlo men’s
A pair of gold hoops; Amazon has lots of choices
and you won’t be worried about losing them
Jelly shoes are cute; there are so many amazing rock beaches and rocky spots

a French club clinched a European trophy as Marseille managed to hold on for a draw in the return match of the Euro Cup final in Montenegro
saving its single-goal advantage from the first leg
Host Jadran could score only two goals in the second half
Jadran Carine Herceg Novi (MNE) v CN Marseille 7-7
A capacity crowd awaited the teams in Niksic (a storm devastated the pool in Herceg Novi a couple of weeks ago)
where the local fans wanted to see Jadran’s first victory on European stage
could find the answers so it stood 2-2 after eight minutes
The Montenegrins could go ahead in aggregate at 5-3 in the second
but Igor Kovavevic pulled one back with 0:01 from time before the break
And from the third period something special began
the Milos Scepanovic Show: Marseille’s goalie – apparently from Montenegro – delivered brilliant stops in succession (he finished the match with 12 saves)
He shut out his compatriots in the entire quarter while Croatian national Ante Vukicevic put away an extra for 5-5
Jadran needed 11:50 minutes to score again
and at 6-5 they had two more possessions but tried in vain
then Kovacevic stunned the hosts with another action goal
the Montenegrins were in trouble and even though they could go even 17 seconds later
they couldn’t set up another scoring opportunity in the remaining 98 seconds
The French could celebrate a historical win
the first even by a French club on European stage

The surprisingly fitting capper to Marseille’s penultimate episode shows the wife of the city’s philandering
coke-sniffing mayor climbing onto her balcony and throwing herself off the side as easily as one might dive into a hotel pool
Her lethargic suicide attempt is supposedly due to an unhealthy cocktail of emotions: the progression of her disease
the restlessness of remaining trapped in her husband’s shadow
the embarrassment of having Barres reject her advances
Rachel: Things were just too dumb to go on
It’s telling that the character seems to have more screentime in “Voted” than in every previous episode combined
Rachel never played a consequential role in the story
so her Ophelia-like succession of betrayal and madness (accentuated by Géraldine Pailhas’s cartoonish overemoting and her immortal toast
“Here’s to your father’s defeat”) is beyond cheap as a ploy
It reinforces the idea that women in Marseille are only valuable when they’re screwing or dying
Even if we accept the show’s crooked perspective
there’s no reason for Barres to reject Rachel’s advances
especially after he’s crossed so many other ethical lines
or has he experienced an out-of-nowhere crisis of conscience
Marseille has written itself into a corner — but to be fair
there was no logical way to escape these credulity-straining plot threads
The second round of elections is gearing up
Taro and Barres are preparing to go mano-a-mano in a televised debate
and members of each rival’s staff are defecting left and right
What is important is that Julia’s beloved Selim
caught supporting the wrong candidate in the wrong place
and she devotes herself even more fully to taking him down
which means she’ll soon discover that the two of them once pulled a Luke-and-Leia
Maybe things would turns out okay if those pesky criminals didn’t keep interfering with the democratic process
An ill-advised Taro photo op in Félix Pyat almost turns to violence due to some especially brazen gang members
whom I thought had the smarts to not bother the mayor when there’s press everywhere
(It’s remarkable how openly all the bad guys in Marseille parade themselves through the streets.) Maybe Farid knows all the journalists in this town are incompetent: Throughout the series
we’ve watched countless nonsensical conversations between a hive-mind press scrum and a politician who directs their coverage through the mere power of suggestion
All of this happens as Alexandre Desplat’s shrieking
plunking score brings our collective transcontinental migraine to new heights — perhaps listening to that score on repeat is what drives Barres to his debate-prep hissy fit
a conversation between two campaign aides makes a strong case for the most idiotic dialogue of the show’s run
“I respect women who don’t have children,” one says
“A tumor stopped me from having children,” the other clarifies
“That’s what I said after the operation,” comes the punch line
The capper of the scene is somehow even more dumbfounding: “I admire men who have some balls — in other words
We could all use some conviction from Marseille
some attempt to depict its characters as approximate human beings
There is one good moment in “Voted,” when Barres notes that even if the campaign can’t prove charges of drug addiction against Taro
merely leveling them will drag down the mayor’s poll numbers
if the man is really as ruthless as he’s led us to believe
he wouldn’t hesitate at all before pulling that trigger

who won the The Netherlands World Cup at the Allianz Regatta and Michael Beckett (GBR)
victorious at the Spain World Cup at the 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar
and the event will feature all the main contenders in the class
Trailing not far behind the ILCA 7 in terms of pedigree is the field in the ILCA 6
where reigning world and Olympic champion Anne-Marie Rindom of Denmark will be the one to beat
with Josefin Olsson (SWE) and Maud Jayet (SUI) both also on the start line
having scooped Olympic and world silver behind Rindom respectively
Double world champion Emma Plasschaert (BEL)

the world silver medallist and winner of the Spain World Cup in action
Ellie Aldridge (GBR) completes the World Championship podium competitors in action in Marseille
having also finished second to Nolot in Palma
The selection of Gianluigi Ugolini and Maria Giubilei for Italy
ahead of Olympic champions Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti leaves the Nacra 17 competition wide open
Ugolini and Giubilei won World Championship silver behind their compatriots a year ago and will now look to shine in their absence
But the favourites may well be John Gimson and Anna Burnet (GBR)
the Olympic silver medallists and two-time world champions
Olympic bronze medallists Paul Kohlhoff and Alica Stuhlemmer (GER) and world bronze medallists Sinem Kurtbay and Akseli Keskinen (FIN) should also be right in the mix
The other mixed event at the Test Event is the Mixed 470
There has been plenty of turnover from both the 470 men and the 470 women
not least with the retirements of British pair Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre
However Olympic silver medallist Anton Dahlberg (SWE) will look to impress alongside new partner Lovisa Karlsson (pictured)
while Jérémie Mion joins Tokyo bronze medallist Camille Lecointre for the hosts

Jordi Xammar Hernandez and Nora Brugman Cabot (ESP) beat them in Sdot Yam

There is plenty of intrigue around the windsurfing for men
with a pair of world champions leading the charge
Germany’s Sebastian Kordel took the honours last year in Brest and will look to impress again in French waters
But he will face competition from Nicolas Goyard (FRA)
Goyard is the brother of Tokyo silver medallist Thomas Goyard
The Dutch challenge will come from Huig-Jan Tak (pictured)
a recent silver-medallist at the Allianz Regatta
the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist will be in action in the iQFOiL Women
with Emma Wilson (GBR) (pictured) looking to build on a strong start to the season
Wilson took the win at the 52 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Iberostar
an event that gave a great idea of what we could expect in Marseille
The top six in Palma are all coming to Marseille
including silver medallist Lucie Belbeoch (FRA) and bronze medallist Veerle Ten Have (NZL)
The class which has seen maybe the greatest turnover since Tokyo is the 49er
with none of the Olympic medallists in action in Marseille
There is still huge pedigree in the field though
notably with reigning world champions Bart Lambriex and Floris van de Werken (NED) looking to build on the form that saw them win on home waters at the Allianz Regatta ahead of a possible hat-trick of world titles
they got the better of Diego Botin and Florian Trittel (ESP) and 2018 world champions Sime and Mihovil Fantela (CRO)
so expect plenty of competition for the Dutch
Search for survivors continues two days after buildings collapsed on Monday
Six bodies have now been found in the rubble of two dilapidated buildings that collapsed in the centre of Marseille earlier this week.
Emergency workers are continuing to sift through the ruins for others still believed to be missing since the two buildings came down suddenly on Monday morning
The discovery of a fifth victim at dawn on Wednesday came as angry local people accused Marseille officials of leaving the city’s poorer residents living in dangerous housing
announced that he had ordered a building-by-building audit in Marseilles before launching what he called an ambitious programme to ensure safer conditions
Rescue work has been hampered by heavy rain
and evidence suggests the collapse has destabilised neighbouring buildings
“We are continuing our work in the hope of finding survivors,” Charles-Henri Garie
0:29Marseille: search continues after buildings collapse – videoTwo buildings containing apartments at numbers 63 and 65 Rue de l’Aubagne suddenly collapsed in the rundown Noailles district of the Mediterranean port on Monday morning
The others were so dilapidated they had been condemned and were boarded up
though locals said they were frequently used by squatters
Residents say they had warned that the buildings were structurally unsound for years, but accused city authorities of doing little. Images taken before the collapse show large cracks in the facade of number 63; a former resident, retired college lecturer Mark Mason
told the Guardian he had been forced to sell his flat in the building to the council in 2012 under a compulsory purchase order after the first storey floor collapsed and chunks of masonry began falling from the building
“Everybody knew about the problems with the two collapsed buildings,” Patrick Lacoste
a spokesman for a local housing action group
“People died for nothing even though we knew,” he added
blamed Marseille city hall for the disaster

Marseille city council has evacuated and rehoused 100 residents from neighbouring buildings and says heavy rain may have contributed to the collapse

In 2011 the local authorities began a plan to renovate the city centre
but a 2015 government report suggested that 100,000 Marseille residents were living in housing dangerous to their health or security
a former buildings inspector who oversaw the 2015 report
told RTL radio this represented around 13% of homes
He added that the figures had changed little since

Marseille Announce the Signing of Mason GreenwoodOlympique de Marseille has announced the signing of English forward Mason Greenwood on a five-year contract from Manchester United
Manchester City Announce The Signing of Brazilian Savinho
Greenwood signed his contract after passing the medical examination
the club said in a statement that did not disclose the financial details of the deal
The BBC reported that the transfer could be worth up to $33.9 million
Marseille highlighted Greenwood's season at Getafe
where he scored 10 goals and provided 6 assists in 36 matches
earning him the fans' vote as the best player of the team
Greenwood said he chose Marseille as his new destination because "it is a club with a great history
an incredible crowd" and he had "good conversations with the new coach
Roberto De Zerbi," whose work he knows from his time at Brighton
De Zerbi's arrival was "very important" in his decision
"He has very precise tactical ideas" and Brighton was "a very enjoyable team to watch," he emphasized

Marseille and its art scene have developed in ways that would have been unthinkable back then

A fresh wind is blowing and there are signs that the international art circuit is finally paying attention
who come in flip flops to start the season en douceur
are increasingly keen to swap the grey skies of Paris or Brussels for a spot in the sunshine
the roving European Biennial of Contemporary Art
announced it would dock in Marseille in 2020
‘2013 was a real milestone,’ says FRAC’s director Pascal Neveux
the city’s various players were mobilized like never before
Following in the footsteps of Mécènes du Sud – a network of businesses that
has embedded artists within companies – new art patrons have emerged
Privately-funded initiatives are now driving a local scene that until recently was mainly reliant on public subsidies
Two weeks ago the talk of the town was the inauguration of a new cultural hub
Property developer ANF is trying its hand at art patronage
and has given seven organizations – big and small
commercial and non-profit – a rent-free shop in a street behind the faded thoroughfare of Rue de la République
The hip Parisian gallery Crèvecoeur and the Brussels-based art consultancy Catherine Bastide have moved in
artist Wilfrid Almendra has opened up a studio
and local print workshop Tchikebe has launched its first boutique
The collectors’ group Lumière is also involved
and has devoted the second iteration of its project space Atlantis to a thoughtful presentation of Martin Soto Climent's work
‘Marseille is the new Los Angeles,’ enthuses Ombline d’Avezac
who is spearheading the Chevalier Roze project for ANF
‘We’ve had so many requests from people who want to do projects here.’
It won’t be easy for commercial galleries however
Like everywhere in France outside of Paris
The local collector-base mainly operates internationally
and galleries often struggle to generate the kind of income necessary to secure a presence at major art fairs
ANF opened its art hub on the very street which
was home to the much-loved galerieofmarseille
The issues raised by the opening of the Chevalier Roze hub dwarf art-world economics
the Rue de la République – once a prestigious address in the 19th century – was gloomy and deprived
Now – despite the scrubbed up facades – it feels gloomy
More than 40 percent of people in the neighbourhood live below the poverty line (against a quarter in the city at large)
an American trust tried and failed to turn it into a high-end shopping destination
According to local association Un Centre Ville Pour Tous
more than half of the commercial premises in Rue de la République
I can only welcome an initiative that carves out a space for art in an area I've heard described several times as ‘moribund.’ There's clearly genuine good will from all parties involved
and ANF assured me that the gallery rent would never go up to market rate
would involve not only spaces staying put after their free three-year leases run out
but preserving the social diversity that is the DNA of this part of town
It's the kind of success that won't be measurable for years
until long after Manifesta’s fairy dust has settled
Marseille has a strong history to build on
Locals here remember with nostalgia the 1990s golden age
back when gallerist Roger Pailhas was the city elite’s tastemaker
A larger-than-life character who didn’t speak a word of English
he linked Marseille to the global art world like no one before or since
regularly exhibiting the likes of Sol Lewitt
Pailhas’ close friendship with Marseille collectors Marc and Josée Gensollen had a major influence on the shaping of their collection
is set out as a showroom displaying conceptual grandees (Joseph Kosuth
Stanley Brouwn) alongside their heirs Douglas Gordon and Maurizio Cattelan
‘La Fabrique is incredible,’ Centre Pompidou director Bernard Blistène tells me
What [the Gensollens] do for their city is absolutely amazing.’
Blistène is another to have played a key role in Marseille’s artistic history
Director of the city museums from 1990 to 1996
which he entrusted to a then 28-year-old Philippe Vergne
Among the exhibitions that took place in Marseille under Blistène's helmsmanship were the first French retrospectives of Jean-Michel Basquiat
‘We tried to build the programme in relation to Marseille,’ he recalls
I explained that his work had an entropic dimension which had something to do with the story of Marseille
Blistène was appointed by mayor Robert Vigouroux and left his post in 1996
What followed for Marseille’s institutions was a long spell in the wilderness
Today local politicians seem to have finally realized the benefits of supporting the arts
collector Marie-Hélène Feraud-Gregori was elected as city councillor dedicated to Opera
Odeon and Contemporary Art – the only councillor in the country with ‘contemporary art’ in her title
One of the driving forces in securing Manifesta for Marseille

Marseille remains a place where improvisation prevails
we were able to be free,’ says Charlotte Cosson
Cosson and her accomplice Emmanuelle Luciani are among Marseille’s most visible young curators
The duo settled in Luciani’s hometown in 2012
Their move is symptomatic of a phenomenon which sees creatives leaving traditional art hubs for more affordable cities on the periphery – a reaction against the pressures that led me to leave Marseille all those years ago
‘You can have a kind of visibility which is much more floating and global.’
After exhibitions including ‘COOL as a State of Mind’ at the MAMO (located on the rooftop of Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse) and a regular moving image programme at the Leclere auction house
the pair have chosen to ground their practice in production
next to the coffee roasting plant that has been in Luciani’s family since the 19th century
Artists including Samara Scott and Matteo Nasini were among those invited to spend time there and benefit from the skills of the Luciani factory workers
Cosson and Luciani hope that this informal residency will expand to welcome up to six artists at a time
They also opened an office-cum-showroom at the Chevalier Roze last week

whose work was much noticed at the Lyon Biennale last year
tells me how much she enjoys living in Marseille and striking up new collaborations with fellow artists passing through town
But she is concerned for the younger generation
particularly those trained at Marseille’s somewhat lacklustre École des Beaux-Arts
is more connection between the art school and the city
‘Students need to have real possibilities to show their work in town,’ she adds
‘and to be identified as coming out of Marseille’s art school.’
While some studios are available for artists coming from elsewhere
for locals finding studio spaces can be tricky
Artist and Marseille native Benjamin Valenza might have one of the few City of Marseille's official studio spaces
but he is acutely aware of the city’s inner workings
where you can find a studio for 300 Euros,’ he says
‘That means that if you are not a rich kid
you simply don’t have the economic scope to operate.’
and thinking about Marseille now that I'm back London
I can't help but be amazed by how much the city has changed
The sheer number of people keen to make of this noisy
ebullient Mediterranean port a place where the visual arts thrive is exhilarating
Blistène has a word of warning against the ‘city renaissance’ cliché: ‘Marseille trips up
It will always go both well and badly.’ Still

For so long, it appeared that the grand return after a two-season absence would fall flat, even when Marseille were reduced to ten men in the 47th minute following Chancel Mbemba’s last-man foul on Son Heung-min. It was a dreadful misjudgment by the former Newcastle centre-half.

Former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood is expected to leave Olympique de Marseille this summer despite a strong first campaign in Ligue 1
This is according to pundit Ludovic Obraniak (via le10sport)
The 23-year-old arrived at Marseille from Manchester United during last summer’s transfer window
with the French club reportedly paying around €30 million for his services
Greenwood had fallen out of favour at Old Trafford and needed a fresh start following legal controversies and suspension from first-team football
Greenwood made an explosive start at the Velodrome
quickly becoming a key part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans and registering impressive numbers
The forward has scored 17 goals and provided three assists in 30 appearances across all competitions so far this season
a return that has kept him among the top performers at the club statistically
his performances have drawn mixed reviews in recent weeks
Critics have pointed to a visible drop in involvement
particularly in his defensive work and pressing – both crucial elements of De Zerbi’s system
Speaking on L’Équipe du Soir on Sunday evening
former Poland international Obraniak claimed Greenwood is already preparing for a summer exit
suggesting the player views Marseille as a springboard rather than a long-term home
“Greenwood had a very satisfactory first part of the season and is now delivering an extremely average second part,” Obraniak said
Marseille took a big risk by signing him.”
The pundit acknowledged Greenwood’s contributions but questioned his mindset
three assists – but I don’t see him committing in the long term
He’s using Marseille to relaunch his career elsewhere.”
The People’s Person earlier covered a report claiming a fallout between Greenwood and coach De Zerbi.
Greenwood has been a consistent attacking threat for Marseille
His ability to produce moments of individual brilliance has earned him admiration
even if concerns linger about his all-round application
His future now appears increasingly uncertain
but interest from other European clubs is likely to emerge if he continues to perform at this level
With no route back to United and his status in English football still unresolved
the next move in Greenwood’s career may take him further across the continent

The verdict is a reminder of the Principality’s determination to get off the grey list
only two of the three expected defendants appeared before the court
having escaped from his prison in Villefranche-sur-Saône
Fearing he would be arrested if he had attended the hearing in Monaco
he nevertheless insisted on being represented by his lawyer
The plan was to spend some time in the Principality
deposit some money in the bank and even pick up a Rolex watch
But little did the young men know that they would soon find themselves on the radar of the Monegasque authorities
they had the idea of dropping by the Rolex store to buy a watch
Jules thought there would be no waiting list in Monaco
He reportedly contacted the Monegasque store by email two years previously
And yet the defendant was able to provide the emails to prove it
“In Paris there’s a waiting list
in Monaco there’s no list,” Jules explained
the three friends asked Monegasque police officers for directions to the Société Générale so that they could deposit the money
The police decided to check their identity and then arrested them after discovering that they had €23,445 on them in cash
shared out between them so as not to exceed the Principality’s authorised limit of €10,000 per person
The prosecutor claims the police could smell a rat
The lawyer for two of the defendants implied it was a case of racial profiling
Deux vols commis coup sur coup à cause de la négligence de ses deux victimes
The defendants’ explanations of where their money came from failed to convince the magistrates
Jules explained that he has saved his money all his life
while Hugo talked about casino winnings and Ryan said he was a middleman for car sales in Algeria
explained that he had saved it over the course of his career: “I’ve been working for 17 years
his restaurant almost always ran at a loss
And yet he still paid himself a monthly salary of €1,200
The judge then pointed out the disconnect between his income and the desire to buy a Rolex
The defendant argued that it was money he had saved from his earnings
The key issue in the trial was where the money came from
The three defendants’ phones were analysed in order to find out more
The most interesting messages were found on Jules’ phone
he traded a number of messages with his partner and accountant
who was worried: “You’ve messed up
we’re overdrawn” and feared “we’ll have all sorts of inspections.”
Gambler loses €2500 at Casino de Monte-Carlo then assaults partner
Jules also reportedly sent other messages that clearly suggested he was selling drugs
“I gave him a sample.” he wrote
was convicted of drug trafficking in 2018 and has just served a two-year prison sentence for a November 2023 go-fast (high-speed drug trafficking) between Marseille and Paris
Before the trial he was out on parole to train as an industrial train driver
With a criminal record that lists 9 charges including theft and driving without a licence
Ryan has had by far the most dealings with the justice system of the three
He was Hugo’s partner for the go-fast but Ryan is still serving his prison sentence in Villefranche
Hugo was sentenced to six months in prison
Their telephones and the €23,445 were confiscated
Greenwood spent last season on loan at Getafe and has not played for United since being suspended by the club in January 2022 after being arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and assault
The 22 year-old was subsequently charged with attempted rape
engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm
the charges were later dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and "new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction"
Marseille is said to be interested in taking Greenwood away from Old Trafford
with reports suggesting an initial loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer worth in the region of £27million
Newly appointed Marseille manager De Zerbi says he will defend Greenwood as he would any other player if the one-cap England international joins
"Mason is a world-class player but we have not recruited him yet," De Zerbi said
"I don't know what happened but I am not used to get involved in my players' private life
you have to know that I treat all my players like my sons
"I can tell them off in private but I would never attack them in public."
Valencia has reportedly also placed a bid for the Man Utd attacker
Atletico Madrid and Juventus are said to be monitoring the situation

was suspended in January 2022 by Manchester United following allegations of attempted rape and sexual assault but prosecutors dropped charges in February 2023
He spent last season on loan at Getafe in La Liga
"Olympique de Marseille are delighted to announce the signing of Mason Greenwood from Manchester United
The 22-year-old striker has signed for the club following a successful medical," said the French club on their website
Marseille made no mention of the allegations in their statement
They called Greenwood "a precocious talent" and an "English nugget"
eighth in Ligue 1 last season, said their new striker will wear the number 10 shirt but did not specify the length of his contract or mention any fee to Manchester United
However the deal is reported to be worth an estimated 30 million euros ($32.7m)
"We wish Mason all the best in his future career," said United on their website
Marseille's left-wing mayor Benoit Payan told French media: "I don't want my club to be covered by shame."
Greenwood has always denied the allegations
and in February I was cleared of all charges," he said when he joined Getafe
I fully accept I made mistakes in my relationship."
Greenwood made his debut for Manchester United aged 17 years and 156 days in the Champions League in 2019 and his Premier League debut four days later
He made his debut for England in September 2020
The forward made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United but had not played for the Premier League club since January 2022
Greenwood scored 10 goals in 36 games for Getafe last season
His arrival in Marseille comes the day after the official departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
the Gabon international who was Marseille's top scorer last season
Marseille face Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on August 3 in Bradford
If he plays it could be his first game in England since he was arrested in January 2022 following allegations made against him
Olympique Marseille are set to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United
Fabrizio Romano claims that United have agreed a deal with the Ligue 1 side worth €30 million
Greenwood’s transfer has stirred controversy due to his past allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault
Marseille mayor Benoît Payan has publicly condemned the signing, expressing his strong opposition during an interview with RMC.
“Greenwood’s behaviour is unspeakable
“Hitting his wife… I saw images that deeply shocked me
Attacking his wife in this way is unworthy of a man and I believe he cannot have a place in this team,” Payan stated
He further emphasized that the values of Marseille and Olympique de Marseille are incompatible with such behaviour
is expected to leave Old Trafford with 35 goals and 12 assists in 129 appearances
His potential was once considered a key part of United’s future
but his departure signals a significant change
Despite his escape from more severe consequences
Greenwood is expected to face significant resistance wherever he plays next
Marseille’s mayor has vowed to urge the club’s president to cancel the transfer
highlighting the backlash and resistance Greenwood is likely to face at his new club
This controversy comes at a time when Marseille are looking to strengthen their squad
yet they must now navigate the ethical and public relations implications of this high-profile signing
Greenwood’s future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks
with the player linked to a number of top clubs in Europe including Borussia Dortmund
Interest in Greenwood intensified following a stellar 2023/24 season in Spain with Getafe that saw the player find the back of the net 10 times in 36 appearances across all competitions
He was named Getafe’s Player of the Season award
A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Greenwood turned down Lazio as his preference is to join Marseille this summer
It was mentioned that Marseille had submitted a verbal bid for the 22-year-old and were keen to finalise an operation to secure the player’s services as soon as possible
David Ornstein of The Athletic has now given a huge update and indicated that United and Roberto De Zerbi’s side have found common ground regarding a transfer fee for Greenwood
“Marseille have reached an agreement with Manchester United to sign Mason Greenwood
although the proposed move remains subject to the forward’s approval.”
“The deal would see the Ligue 1 side pay their Premier League counterparts €31.6million (£26.7m)
comprising €27.6m (£23.3m) fixed and €4m (£3.4m) in add-ons
plus a large share of any future sale.”
“Any potential move to the south of France would see the 22-year-old work under former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi
who was named Marseille’s new head coach in June.”
United will certainly be hoping that Greenwood speedily agrees personal terms with Marseille so that the funds generated from his sale can be added to the Red Devils’ transfer kitty
The 20-time English champions are currently working on deals for stars such as Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich)
Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton) and Joshua Zirkzee (Bologna)

Marseille, who host Arsenal on 19 October, have changed the away access at the Stade Vélodrome after Uefa started to investigate the incidents before and after United's match in France in the last 16 of the Champions League in February
Various supporters' groups, including Reds Away, have been working with the Football Supporters' Federation to instigate a full Uefa inquiry after reports of fans being kept in a holding area, known as Hall 7, before the match and struck with batons
After the game there was only one gate to leave through and more reports of injuries
has now written to the federation to say he has "no reason to doubt the veracity of the supporters' accounts of events" and that there was "a negative attitude on the part of the police to supporters in general"
Vouillamoz wrote that "Uefa will be paying close attention to the treatment of away supporters at this venue during the coming season"
although he indicated the trouble was caused by "the late arrival of many United supporters and the disorderly behaviour of a small minority"
Uefa has studied a security report from Marseille's home game last month against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League to discover whether the United incident was a one-off or part of something more serious
"We will be talking to Marseille," Vouillamoz writes
of interest that the report highlights an improvement in the access arrangements for away supporters and an improvement in facilities in Hall 7
These changes include better queuing systems and control … and escorting of smaller groups than those on previous occasions."
The Guardian has been told by senior figures in Greater Manchester police they were deeply unhappy about the actions of their French counterparts
believing them to be "baton-happy" and ignoring the advice of the officers who regularly travel with United's supporters and had warned many fans would arrive late
News broke this evening that Manchester United had accepted Marseille’s €27.6+€4 million offer for Greenwood
who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain
All that remained was Greenwood’s agreement
according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano
“Olympique Marseille have Mason Greenwood’s green light to the move as final details of contract/salary are being discussed,” Romano said
“Manchester United have accepted €30m package offered by OM
Final details on player side then done deal.”

United and Greenwood look to have got their wish to find a new club for the 22 year old by the end of this week
Serie A clubs Juventus and Lazio had appeared to be the front runners to take Greenwood on a permanent deal, but the Turin club cooled their interest, switching to another United star
Meanwhile Lazio were humiliated when they couldn’t match Marseille’s bid, with president Claudio Lotito trying to save face yesterday by saying he had another candidate who is “ten times the player” that Greenwood is
Valencia have also been credited with an interest in the player and were at one stage rumoured to have made a £25 million bid themselves
but the Spanish media never really corroborated the claims

Public opinion may be the only issue standing in the way of the deal now
with all parties seemingly happy to proceed

Billy still insists Matteo Darmian and Alex Telles could have made it at United given half a chance
Marseille have conducted one of the most impressive summer transfer windows in Ligue 1 to date
overhauling their squad in a matter of weeks to get themselves primed for the new season
This apparently flies in the face of the prevailing financial situation in France, and also that of Marseille, who have toiled to make such signings lately.
Indeed, OM have been warned by the DNGC – French football’s financial watchdog – over their summer campaign. As such, the club will have its accounts closely monitored.

Marseille have saved significantly by offloading several big earners off their books this summer
who has joined Tigres and will play for France at the Olympics
His sizeable wage was not justified by his performances over the last two seasons
was on an entirely outsized wage given his relatively feeble influence in the team
Marseille have seen one of their biggest earners leave the club – albeit they are likely paying a significant portion of his bloated wage
which should go some way more to balancing the books
there is a sense that Marseille are speculating that they can take advantage of weakness in their rivals due to the financial situation of many
It is notable that of OM’s high-profile additions
Guendouzi and Under both arrive on temporary deals
the type of which Saliba should also sign on
Marseille seem to be taking something of a calculated risk with regards the investment in their squad for 2021/22

France (Reuters) – Fiji face England on Sunday bidding
to become the first Tier Two team to make the Rugby World Cup semi-finals
having come so agonisingly close in their last opportunity 16 years ago
The islanders actually made the last eight of the inaugural competition in 1987
despite losing two of their three pool games
as they famously beat Wales in a Nantes pool classic to make the last eight and a meeting with champions-in-waiting South Africa
It looked to be heading for a relatively routine for the Springboks as they dominated the first half
led 13-3 at the break and stretched it to 20-6 with a counter-attacking JP Pietersen try
with Fiji then suffering a yellow card for centre Seru Rabeni
what followed was one of the most exciting and tense 20 minutes in World Cup history as 14-man Fiji suddenly found the explosive attacking verve that has made them such a success in Sevens for so long
Winger Vilimoni Delasau chased his own kick for a try and two minutes later the Velodrome was in uproar as
after a thrilling length of the field attack
captain Mosese Rauluni slipped through a gap to send Sireli Bobo over for another try
Seremaia Bai converted to make it 20-20 with 20 minutes to go
which was when Springbok captain John Smit famously got his men into a huddle and told them he could see in their eyes what he had seen in those of the Australia and New Zealand players as they were upset by France and England the previous day
“He told them to snap out of it and it was a magnificent example of leadership under the most intense pressure,” coach Jake White said after the match
A Percy Montgomery penalty edged South Africa back into the lead but Fiji were on fire and were inches away from another stunning try 14 minutes from time
Lock Ifereimi Rawaqa looked certain to score but Pietersen
maybe energised by Smit’s uplifting words
crashed into him and somehow found the strength to roll him into touch before the big man was able to get the ball down and the TMO of the day ruled no try
have ever got to the last four as a minute later flanker Juan Smith got South Africa’s fourth try and Butch James then glossed the scoreline to 37-20
They swept past Argentina in the semis and went on to win the final against England
Bai is back with Fiji as kicking coach in France and remembered that classic weekend of upsets – and near upsets – as he looked ahead to Sunday’s clash in the same stadium
“It reminds me of the 2007 tournament where everybody wrote England off (after their 36-0 pool-stage defeat by South Africa),” he said this week
with players who have played on the big stage
Now we need to see how we can come back and do well in this quarter-final.”
who spent two years in the English Premiership with Leicester
said Fiji’s first win over England at Twickenham in August was an obvious lift but
“form is out of the window” once the knockout stage begins
“It gives us great confidence going into the game that we have beaten them
but the most important thing in a playoff is that anything can happen,” he said
re-focus and we will have to prepare well for this resilient English side.”

Provence is a place where the land meets the sea
and where culture blends beautifully with the region’s rich history
the unique and varied Provençal landscape has inspired creatives for centuries
and the mountainside vineyards of the region produce some of the best wine in the world
Here’s how to spend 7 days in Provence: your complete guide and itinerary for spending one-week exploring this fascinating region
Where to stay | Hôtel Le Pigonnet
Essential tour: Historical and gourmet walking tour of Aix-en-Provence
Day one: A ‘city of a hundred fountains‘ was how my friend described Aix-en-Provence to me when I went to visit her last year
Once the inspiration for artists such as Monet
it’s easy to spend a lost exploring the city
getting lost along its many sun-drenched streets
The city was even once home to Cezanne (who is also now buried in the city’s cemetery). If you’re interested in learning more about the artists who made Aix-en-Provence their home and in particular
you can take a self-guided walking tour of the city
The starting point is the city’s tourism office
and there are brochures for the tour available at the help desk
or indulge in a little shopping at one of the city’s many independent boutiques (and galleries)
Throughout the city, there are also often local markets (where you can pick up fresh local produce such as lavender and tomatoes), as well as little churches and secret little cafés. It’s also worth noting that there are plenty of hidden gems in Aix-en-Provence which are also worth checking out
Day two: After spending your first day in Provence exploring the town of Aix-en-Provence
head out into the countryside and get a real taste for the region (both figuratively and literally)
Spend day two in Provence hiking nearby Montagne Sainte Victoire
There are plenty of buses heading out toward the mountain from Aix
you can’t visit Provence and not visit a vineyard… After all
wine tastes best than in situ and on the very spot where the grapes were grown
If you’re look ing for a guided excursion, then this half-day tour to Cezanne wine country incorporates a visit to two local wineries
Where to stay | Le Jardin d’Emile
Day 3: If there’s one place you should definitely visit during your 7 days in Provence
it’s Cassis (also the French word for black currant). After hiking around the mountainside yesterday
Spend day three in Provence wandering around the port of Cassis, and getting your first feel for the Southern French coast. Overlooked by the Château de Cassis (once a Carolingian fortress
the seaside town has everything you could want from a Provençal town
enjoy an ice cream (lavender is a local delicacy and grows abundantly in the fields throughout the region)
Day 4: Spend day 4 of your Provençal tour hiking the ‘Calanques de Cassis‘
Often cited as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the World
it’s most definitely a must-see Provence destination
The chalky cliffs overlook an azure blue sea and form little-hidden coves all along the coastline
providing perfect little picnic and bathing spots
It’s the perfect hideaway from reality and will make you wish you were spending longer in this little piece of paradise
that they are now a designated National Park
They stretch all the way along the coastline to Marseille
although they could be explored over several days
one day is definitely sufficient to get a taste of this beautiful part of the world
Where to stay |Grand Hotel Beauvau Marseille Vieux-Port
Essential tour: Sunset dinner cruise
Day 5: This port city has been in use since ancient times
If you’re staying in Provence for longer than a week
you could easily extend your stay in Marseille to encompass a couple of days- there’s certainly enough to see and do
Where to stay | Au cœur d’Avignon Maison d’hôtes et Bar à Vin
Essential tour: 3 hour walking tour and wine tasting
the ancient town of Avignon is perhaps most famous for its half bridge
All that remains of Pont Saint-Bénézet is on display in the centre of the water
the rest having been washed away at some point during the 17th-century
Here, in Avignon, you can also visit the UNESCO world heritage site ‘Palais des Papes’ (built for popes fleeing Rome), and explore the town’s Roman past. Other highlights include plenty of hidden gems
Day 7: To finish off your 7 days in Provence, spend a relaxing night in La Ciotat. Cute, quirky and a little off the beaten path, La Ciotat is everything you could want from a seaside French fishing village. The village was once the site for the first filming of a motion picture
and allegedly where the games ‘boules’ was invented
End your blissful time in Provence by exploring the small alleys and cute eateries of this sleepy little fishing town. There’s even a small artificial beach on the fringes of the port where you can swim and paddle in the sea. Stuck on ideas for things to do in the town? Here’s how to spend a complete day in La Ciotat

Le Classique has certainly thrilled fans with some exciting moments over the years
and recently hasn’t been as competitive as it once was
the fixture is still a must-watch for Ligue 1 fans every season
You can find an overview of the derby here
but let’s take a look at seven of the most memorable clashes between Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain
07/04/1979. 7 buts et une victoire in extremis du #PSG sur l'@OM_Officiel : 4️⃣-3️⃣⚽️ Bureau, Dahleb, A. Bianchi, C. Bianchi? https://t.co/Zm9a8AmHeh#PSGOM pic.twitter.com/9H4nErF8MD
Even though they’ve faced off many times since
the 1979 edition retains the record for being the highest scoring meeting between the pair
After a quick opening goal from Marseille's Marc Berdoll
PSG equalised after just three minutes through Bernard Bureau
The game remained 1-1 until after half-time
when a goal from Mustapha Dahleb put the capital club in front
Armando Bianchi converted a penalty to then put the Parisians two goals to the good
But Marseille refused to give up and fought back to level the game at 3-3 courtesy of goals from Robert Burguis and another from Berdoll
with both sides desperately looking for a winner
Carlos Bianchi picked up the ball from long-range and fired in a powerful shot that nestled in the back of the net
securing a win in one of the most entertaining encounters in the derby's history
Des supporters de l'OM brandissent la banderole "Papin for ever" lors du match Marseille contre PSG le 5 mai 1989 #AFP pic.twitter.com/sCsmXmhuPT
This was arguably the encounter that established the real hatred between these two sides
Both teams came into the game knowing that a win would effectively put themselves in the box-seat to secure the league that season
And with PSG president Francis Borelli accusing his Marseille counterpart Bernard Tapie of match-fixing in the build-up
neither side seemed able to make a breakthrough
meaning that the away side was set to come away with a crucial point that would crown them the top-flight champions for only the second time in their history
a 25-yard shot from Franck Sauzée caught out the visitors’ goalkeeper Joël Bats to give Marseille a huge 1-0 win
With the northern club unable to respond before the final whistle
the result sealed Marseille’s first league title in 17 years
which would prove to be the start of a hugely successful era for the club
PSG coach Artur Jorge proclaimed his players would ‘crush’ their visitors
while star winger David Ginola promised to bring a war upon their rivals
Marseille president Tapie used the comments as motivation for his team and even pinned up the comments in their dressing room
the defining statistic of the game was that more than 50 fouls were committed collectively on the field
Yet it was the away side who had the last laugh
with forward Alen Bokšić scoring the winner to secure the three points
this match lives long in the memory of both sets of supporters
The 1997 clash between Marseille vs PSG / GABRIEL BOUYS/Getty ImagesHaving earned promotion back to Ligue 1
after being demoted due to the French football bribery scandal
Marseille travelled to Paris with a point to prove to their rivals
by taking the lead through Xavier Gravelaine’s opener
as Jérôme Leroy equalised for PSG to even the score before the break
it seemed that a single decision could turn the game in the favour of either side
Unfortunately for many at the Parc des Princes
the crucial moment went in favour of Marseille
when PSG midfielder Éric Rabésandratana was controversially ruled to have fouled Fabrizio Ravanelli in his own box
who fired home the resulting penalty to restore Marseille’s lead
as the south coast club ended up holding on for the slender victory
PSG fans still believe Ravanelli dived for the penalty
and the incident has made this game one of the most memorable Classiques in history
??️ #Classique Le but mythique de notre #PSGlegend Pedro Miguel Pauleta ? Marseille lors de la saison 2004-2005 ??? #ICICESTPARIS pic.twitter.com/b3edc1CUi8
While this match didn’t have the levels of drama or controversy seen in the past
it’s remembered mostly for Pauleta’s individual brilliance that won the game
the PSG star scored a stunning lob from an incredibly tight angle past Fabien Barthez to put the hosts in front
Everything went perfectly for the Parisians
the Portuguese striker doubled the lead with his second strike
showing off his quality to the delight of the Parc des Princes
While Marseille did eventually score through Laurent Battles
as they were deservedly beaten by their rivals
It cemented the bond between Pauleta and the club’s fans
with his first goal still judged to be one of the best goals ever scored in the Classique
With both sides expected to compete for the 2012/13 Ligue 1 title
this was a highly anticipated clash for supporters all over the country
all four goals came in a seesawing first half which saw both sides take the lead at times
Marseille striker André-Pierre Gignac sent the Vélodrome into raptures when his low drive curled into the far corner of the goal
as a brilliant back-heel volley from Zlatan Ibrahimović drew the Parisians level five minutes later
bending a long-range free-kick past the dive of Steve Mandanda to turn the game around and silence the home crowd
and Gignac rose to nod in Mathieu Valbuena’s corner to equalise for the hosts and make it 2-2
Despite there not being any more goals in the second-half
thanks to the sheer individual brilliance of both opposing strikers
the Stade Vélodrome once again played host to an entertaining 2-2 draw
and was a far more compelling watch overall
Unlikely goal scorer Luiz Gustavo saw his long-range effort swerve past PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola into the back of the net
Much to the disappointment of the home crowd
Rudi Garcia’s side weren’t able to finish the half in front
as Neymar swept in to equalise for the visitors
It took until the 78th minute for the next goal to come
and it was Marseille winger Florian Thauvin who tapped in from Clinton N’Jie’s cross
And it looked increasingly likely that they would hold on to a 2-1 win
especially after Neymar was then sent-off for a second booking after reacting angrily to being fouled
there was still one more twist in this dramatic game to follow
Edinson Cavani lined himself up for a 25-yard free-kick
And the Uruguayan smashed it past Mandanda
