Oppenheim The exhibition opens on March 16 and runs through June 16 2024 At a time when considerable attention is being given to Nazi looted art Oppenheim focuses both on art looted from Dutch collections and Dutch art in looted collections She specifically examines artworks and objects that are most likely missing or destroyed Oppenheim uses a stratified approach to reveal what presence the disappeared art still has in the world around us.Art looted from the Netherlands Dutch art in looted collectionsIn Spolia, Oppenheim concentrates on supposed missing looted artworks and objects such as paintings and tapestries that were once owned by dealers and collectors of Jewish descent in the Netherlands as well as collections of Dutch art looted from Jewish families elsewhere Oppenheim discovered photographic records of plundered works One of the archives she consulted was that of the well-known Amsterdam art dealer Jacques Goudstikker (1897-1940) Goudstikker and his family fled to the United Kingdom in 1940 by boat He was also forced to leave behind his gallery’s inventory which was usurped and exploited by Nazi occupiers and their accomplices Oppenheim discovered records and photographic documentation of artworks owned by the Amsterdam and Paris-based Hamburger family in the National Archives of Germany (Bundesarchiv) Oppenheim used this photographic documentation to produce new artworks “reprocessing” the images in her darkroom using various techniques In one such technique she uses fire to re-expose photographic prints and negatives Typically thought of as a force of destruction giving light to images of lost or destroyed artworks.Visible AbsenceThe question that is often key to Oppenheim’s work is how to depict what no longer exists or is concealed explores how the afterlives of Nazi looted art and objects extend through time Spolia refers to both spoils of war and is an architectural term that describes how parts of buildings were taken as war booty to serve as the literal building blocks of new structures Oppenheim applies this approach to the traces of Nazi looted art and objects using what little remains as the building blocks of new artworks. In the slide presentation Kakadu (‘Cockatoo’) the presence of a missing figurine is suggested through images of the moulds from the Meissen factory used to make it the mould is a negative space out of which any number of positives can be made In the work Stola she creates photographs using a beaded silk shawl she purchased in a Paris flea market as a photographic negative She was intrigued by how this decorative piece resembled a description of a looted silk stole in one of the archives she consulted Looted artworks about which there is little or no documentation are transformed by Oppenheim into abstract images that reflect the viewer in the photographic space Oppenheim positions herself between the reflection and absorption of light as a vehicle through which images can travel through time and reshape themselves in the light and the chemistry of her darkroom.Oppenheim organizes the exhibition spaces of Spolia primarily according to the families who originally possessed the looted objects In this way Oppenheim tries to centre the exhibition around those who were persecuted during the Nazi regime The gravity and magnitude of crimes committed during the Second World War continue to affect many aspects of contemporary life From the many ongoing restitution claims to the untangling of often complex family histories there is no part of society that does not grapple with this history In the words of the American writer William Faulkner: ‘The past is never dead Photo by Eddo hartmann Photography/Huis Marseille Check the boxes for the February with a tense 1-0 home win over Marseille in Group B Both teams had already secured top-two finishes but the Seagulls needed a win to usurp Marseille at the top of the standings The English Premier League side struggled to break down their visitors for long periods but Pedro showed neat footwork in the penalty area before drilling the ball into the top corner in the 88th minute to score his sixth goal in as many Europa League matches this season We played amazing football,” Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi said West Ham United made it a clean sweep for British teams finishing top of halftime with a low strike that beat Caoimhin Kelleher at his near post Ryan Gravenberch and Darwin Nunez in the second half but Saint-Gilloise held on for a famous victory although the Belgians and direct qualification for the round-of-16 with a 3-2 victory at Stade Rennais Lorenz Assignon scored in the 12th minute of stoppage-time to seemingly send Rennes back to the group summit but his goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR) and scuffles broke out after the final whistle VAR intervened because Enzo Le Fee had collected the ball himself after his own free-kick had European Champions League would become more important to fans of the game than the World Cup Manchester United are obviously an English team though their team is made up of players from across the globe along their fanbase (which is one of the largest in football This is perhaps why the Champions League has grabbed the hearts and minds of the world's fans because club football at the highest level is now truly global With players from hundreds of different countries making up the rosters of teams throughout Europe the game of football has reached a more international level the Champions League has become just as important as the World Cup for the reason that it involves the world's most elite footballers playing together on a more regular basis Manchester United have a long and reasonably successful European tradition first winning the Champions League in 1968 (when it was still known as the European Cup) under the management of club legend Sir Matt Busby They have gone on to record two more trophies in the competition under the guidance of current Old Trafford legend Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999 and 2008 It is well known that Ferguson has a burning ambition to win again in Europe and many think that this is the reason he is still in the managerial hot-seat beating Liverpool's record of Premier League title wins is something that must also drive him he has guided his team through to the last sixteen undefeated in group play were never seriously tested by the opponents they faced The group stage is over now though and United face French champions Olympique Marseille in what could be a fixture that could produce a couple of European nights to remember This tie will figure prominently in Ferguson's plans for the next couple of weeks and could well be top of his agenda— considering the importance on which he places this trophy Marseille have struggled this season to reproduce the form that saw them capture the French Ligue One last season and though capable of playing a synchronised and precise game with their strikers being almost routinely jeered by the home crowd this season beat Chelsea in their last match in the group stage it must be remembered that Chelsea had been in terrible form and are a shadow of the side that seemed so powerful last season have most recently had their undefeated league run ended by Wolverhampton Wanderers in a result that stunned many across the footballing world After shakily negotiating the tightrope of an undefeated run for so long they slipped against a team that many expected them to dominate both sides seasons and key players will be analysed and conclusions will be drawn on the possibility of each sides progression to the quarter finals FRANCE - SEPTEMBER 15: Marseille team line up during the UEFA Champions League Group F match between Olympique Marseille and Spartak Moscow at the Stade Velodrome on September 15 (Photo by Michael Steele/Getty ImagMarseille have often looked like they are about to recapture the form that saw them finish six points clear of Lyon at the top of last seasons French Ligue One though they have struggled to replace the leagues top goal scorer Mamadou Niang who's excellent form in front of goal last season was one reason they were able to end a championship drought that had dragged on for eighteen long years They did sign Andre-Pierre Gignac from Toulouse though the new striker had struggled to recapture the form that he had shown for Toulouse and the French national side Recent form has suggested he is on the verge of repaying manager Didier Deschamps faith though notching a goal in each of his last two home starts which only takes his season tally to three but is of course a quite drastic improvement on the eve of such a huge Champions League fixture his return to form could not come at a better time so it is evident that at present they do not have a striker who is finding the net on a regular basis This could prove to be crucial as Manchester United have a proud defensive record in European competition and would be expected to defend in a lot more stout a fashion than the teams that Marseille meet from week to week in the league A major part of Marseille's ability to compete in this match will be the support of their home crowd at the famous Stade Velodrome The crowd has turned against the team recently one of the teams center backs even confronting elements in the stands in the last match as the boo boys voiced their disappointment at the teams poor play and it would certainly make the tie an easier proposition for Manchester United's away leg if the crowd behaves in such a fickle manner Marseille do however have a very competitive team unit Lucho Gonzalez in particular is one to keep an eye on in this tie Gonzalez is an exciting playmaker who loves to get on the ball and thread a pass or outfox an opponent to create space he is capable of scoring and creating goals part of the FC Porto side that drew with United at Old Trafford in 2009 and who would have knocked United out had it not been for Cristiano Ronaldo's thunderbolt from forty or so yards in Porto Another key player for Marseille is Benoit Cheyrou though more comfortable in a deeper lying role he will be one that United will have to close down and not let get comfortable wonderfully improvised and technically proficient distribution and a proved ability to lay on goal scoring chances Gabriel Heinze of course is a former United player and is remembered fondly by many United fans for his work ethic and unerring dedication to the team He was of course unfortunately injured for a reasonable length of time which led to United signing Patrice Evra and the Frenchman displayed excellent form which kept Heinze out of the team and eventually led to his transfer to Real Madrid.Heinze is a key player not only because he has the experience of playing for United but also because he is a big game player who has won medals Such players are known for their ability to step up in big matches and it is frequently the case thar they end up sneaking in somewhere and giving their former clubs a scare somehow or the other an accomplished defender who has won the French title twice in three years with Bordeaux and then current club Marseille In England he is probably best remembered for enduring a disappointing time with Charlton Athletic where the chairman of Charlton quipped that 'he had never heard of him' which is somewhat typical of a chairman really showing that they no little or nothing about football will be another key player for Marseille for rather obvious reasons but is well regarded as a keeper and has been mentioned in the past as a possible replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar A good shot stopper with a strong aerial presence he has a sure pair of hands that will definitely be brought into play during the course of the two legged tie ENGLAND - DECEMBER 07: The Manchester United players line up for a team photo prior to the UEFA Champions League Group C match between Manchester United and Valencia at Old Trafford on December 7 (Photo by CliveManchester United have been the most consistent of the English sides this season their consistency garnering them the top spot in the EPL with an undefeated passage through the group stage They were of course defeated for the first time in the league only a few days ago in which they have accounted for the likes of Chelsea This could well be because the "bigger" sides go to Wolves with the notion they have won the game already a notion that Ferguson will want to stamp out of his team if they are to have a chance in winning the three major trophies they now vie for Alex Ferguson will be wary of his sides morale before a big game this weekend against Manchester City and will be equally as concerned about his '"baby" United had seemed to hit a rich vein of form over the New Year period going clear of their rivals in the league and scoring goals as they did so Wayne Rooney looked to have found form again with an excellent game against Aston Villa the somewhat scratchy win over Blackpool was hastily filed away United do have a tough second half of the season coming up and a two legged tie like the Marseille game is one that Ferguson could perhaps want to sew up in the first leg at Old Trafford This would leave him the option of resting some of his first choice line up when the second tie takes place in Marseille as he himself has famously been in a triumphant underdog side before when the French national team shocked the world by beating the highly fancied Brazilians in the World Cup final in 1998 they are still one of the form teams in Europe at present and are favored by many to make short work of the French Champions who have looked disjointed on occasion this season most notably when they crashed out of the French Cup to second tier side Knock out football is always a tightrope though and made all the more interesting by the away goals rule which proved the undoing of United last season when they went out to Bayern Munich Wayne Rooney has so far had a difficult season following on from his stellar showing in United's last campaign and though having seemed to have turned a corner against Aston Villa looked woefully out of sorts against Wolves He was subbed in the second half as Ferguson searched for the combination that would keep his unbeaten record in the league alive and his quality is still something that opposition teams are well aware of when they plan for fixtures Nemanja Vidic has been the rock on which United's excellent season has been based the United central`defender has been in astonishing form as he has almost single handedly kept United in matches that they could easily have lost or shared the points The Serbian is a player that could slot into any team on the planet such is his defensive prowess He is one player who could be the difference if United are to experience any sort of success close to their taking of the 2008 Champions League trophy Dimitar Berbatov has broken the shackles this season long derided as not of sufficient quality to play for United the Bulgar has silenced the critics in stepping into the void that Rooney has left due to his patchy form since becoming one of the highest paid players in the universe finesse and technical ability to make his mark in Europe though he does occasionally drift out of matches he is the sort of player who can turn a game in a few seconds Luis Nani is another who has carried the burden of fans doubts though his improvement last term was excellent and he has carried on again this season he looks ready to become the star player he was touted as when he first came onto the scene at United a few years ago though more often deployed from the sideline has become Ferguson's go to player if he thinks he needs a match turned on its head This could well make him a vital part of United's European assault and his capacity for improvised magic is something that always makes his presence a worry for opposition managers Manchester United have many others that could figure Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes of course seasoned campaigners, who have been there and done this all before The likes of Ji Sung Park and Darren Fletcher and the ever reliable Patrice Evra Custodian Edwin Van Der Sar is of course another big part of United's success remains one of the best keepers in the world Clive Brunskill/Getty Images19 Oct 1999: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (#20) scores for Manchester United but the goal is ruled out for offside during the Champions League Group D match against Marseille played at the Stade Velodrome The game finished in a 1-0 win for MaThe tie looked fairly open and shut before United slipped up in the weekend gone the first defeat of the league season and the second defeat in all competitions Marseille took the points in their weekend fixture but their own fans booed them some saying that they were not satisfied with the quality of the football played of Marseille's victory as United seek to reassure themselves and their support of their infallibility Coming on the back of what is the biggest game of the season for United supporters City were of course very close to beating United in the corresponding fixture last season though Ryan Giggs and Michael Owen conspired to turn the game in United's favor during an injury time period now famously referred to as "Fergie time" City present an even bigger challenge this season with the ridiculously rich side experiencing a good run of form which has seen them slowly come into contention for top honors this season If United experience anything but a victory in the weekends game they could find themselves under hellish pressure to perform come the visit of Marseille Marseille are without doubt a quality outfit and have beaten English opposition this season already though the last time the two teams met were in Champions League group games the final aggregate score if tallied was 2-2 Manchester United's season hangs in the balance with two major hurdles to overcome in the next few days not only could it be potentially vomit inducing for the United faithful but the pressure on the side will heighten and morale could take a knock The midweek game against Marseille could then prove to be more than an annoyance particularly so after what could well be a bruising encounter against their city rivals it would be almost a given that they will have enough confidence and belief to foil the French champions There will be a Classique clash in the next round of the Coupe de France on 7/8 February Fourteen-time winners of the competition (1982 a national record) and through to the Last 16 after Congratulations to Atletico Madrid, the 2018 Europa League champions. Commiserations to Marseille, for whom the stars never looked like aligning. Spanish teams have now won eight of the last nine Europa League and Champions League trophies on offer. 16 May 201823.01 CESTThis victory puts Atletico into joint second place on the Uefa Cup / Europa League roll of honour: Atletico Madrid2: Borussia Monchengladbach Barcelona and Valencia would be up there on our multiple winners list with three while Leeds United would join the group on two Having lost a couple of Champions League finals in recent seasons this is a huge release of emotion for quite a few of these players but this is the first trophy Antoine Griezmann has won for Atletico too Gabi takes possession of the trophy and raises it .. generously allowing Torres to share the moment The red-and-white ticker tape showers down as the players bounce like they’ve never bounced before takes off his medal the second it’s draped around his neck his World Cup chances now hang in the balance having bossed that match since the 21st minute when they were gifted the lead by Andre Zambo Anguissa’s terrible mistake Antoine Griezmann scored two clinical goals Gabi embellishing the scoreline right at the end But 0-3 doesn’t tell the whole story: Valere Germain missed a golden opportunity in the early exchanges and Kostas Mitroglou was so close to scoring with a towering header 16 May 201822.35 CESTGOAL! Marseille 0-3 Atletico Madrid (Gabi 89)This puts the tin lid and pretty bow on it. Atletico stream forward, Marseille having committed too many men forward Grizemann spreads a pass wide left for Costa What a performance by this wonderfully relentless Atletico Madrid side 16 May 201822.32 CEST87 min: Not sure how this is still 0-2. First up, Sarr and Rami take turns to gift possession to Atletico, just outside their own box. Diego Costa’s eventual shot is no good. Then up the other end, Njie is teed up just inside the area, but shanks an awful effort out for a throw. 16 May 201822.29 CEST85 min: Marseille’s fans Unless a story for the ages is about to be written 16 May 201822.27 CEST81 min: And the luck’s with them, too. Because Marseille are an inch away from getting back into this final and plants a downwards header towards the bottom left but the ball bounces off the bottom of the left-hand post 16 May 201822.23 CEST78 min: Njie is booked for rather petulantly flicking a hand towards the face of Lucas. Marseille need to calm down if they’re to have any chance of a dramatic comeback. 16 May 201822.22 CEST77 min: Griezmann sends Costa scampering with intent down the inside-left channel. For a second, it looks like he’s shaping to hit a screaming, dipping, diagonal volley towards the right-hand portion of the goal. But he decides against it, and the chance to do something, anything is gone. 16 May 201822.20 CEST76 min: Gustavo is booked after blocking Gabi as the Atletico captain hugs the right touchline. It’s a foul, nothing more, but he’s talked himself into the book for arguing the toss with the linesman. The resulting free kick is wasted. Updated at 22.20 CEST16 May 201822.19 CEST74 min: Germain, who passed up that early chance for Marseille, is sacrificed for Mitroglou. The last throw of the dice. 16 May 201822.18 CEST73 min: But there’s another one coming along soon enough, as Correa busies himself on the right. This one leads to an extended period of ball-hogging, the highlight of which being a glorious crossfield pass by Diego Costa. Atletico have seized back total control. 16 May 201822.15 CEST71 min: Griezmann curls the set piece into the box Saul tries to guide a header into the top left from which Koke crosses deep from the left Mandanda is forced to tip an unpredictable dipper over And that one’s nothing to write home about at all 16 May 201822.11 CEST66 min: From the corner, Njie has a crack, but it’s blocked by Griezmann. And then another phase of attack, as Lopez dinks into the box from deep. The ball drops to Sanson, who leans back and hoicks over. 16 May 201822.08 CEST63 min: Sanson tries to strip Saul of his trousers in a midfield tussle. He doesn’t quite succeed, though he really should be going in the book. 16 May 201822.00 CEST56 min: Ocampos takes up his position on the Marseille bench, ranting in the expressive style. He’s really not happy. 16 May 201821.59 CEST55 min: A disgruntled Ocampos - who has been one of Marseille’s better performers - is hooked. Clinton Njie, once of Tottenham Hotspur, comes on in his stead. 16 May 201821.58 CEST53 min: And from this one, Godin flashes a header wide right from close range. He should probably have wrapped this up, right there. Marseille are clinging on for dear life. 16 May 201821.57 CEST52 min: From the set piece, the ball’s worked to Griezmann, who has the smell of a hat-trick in his nostrils. His shot, from the right-hand edge of the D, is deflected wide right for another corner. 16 May 201821.56 CEST51 min: Marseille are on the rack now. They need to clear their heads, because when Costa tries to break into the box from the left, Rami comes across and nearly slices a clearance backwards and over his own keeper, into the top right. Corner. 16 May 201821.55 CESTGOAL! Marseille 0-2 Atletico Madrid (Griezmann 49)This was so simple. A huge hole in the Marseille midfield and slips a ball down the inside-right for Griezmann half-strokes the ball past the keeper and into the bottom left 16 May 201821.53 CEST47 min: A slow start to the second half. On the touchline, Atletico assistant coach German Burgos pulls on an extra gilet as the rain comes down in stair rods. Right now, Diego Simeone will be pleased he’s banned from the touchline and banished to the dry stand. 16 May 201821.50 CESTSo here we go again! Atletico get the party restarted, having swapped off the already-booked Vrsaljko for Juanfran. Taking no chances. It’s tipping down in Lyon. 16 May 201821.42 CESTHalf-time eulogy. One of England’s heroes of 1966 passed away today. Here’s Richard Williams on the unassuming but brilliant Ramon Wilson. 16 May 201821.35 CEST45 min: Thauvin is down now. He’s taken a deflected clearance flush in his trouser arrangement. Ooyah, oof. 16 May 201821.28 CEST40 min: There’s loads of smoke billowing across the pitch again or Ofenbach have returned with their decks 16 May 201821.26 CEST37 min: Amavi and Correa contest a 50-50 with a couple of dainty high-kicks. Correa goes down and rolls around quite a bit. There’s nothing in that, but Amavi is clearly frustrated because, as play restarts and Vrsaljko romps down the right, he comes across and clatters him to such an extent that a yellow card is a no-brainer. 16 May 201821.21 CEST32 min: Yep, he’s taking his armband off. The poor chap is in floods of tears as he limps off. Maxime Lopez comes on in his stead. That’s a huge blow for Marseille whose world has fallen apart in the last ten minutes Manchester United are set to take on Marseille in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday night and both sets of fans will be hoping that this fixture will be a little less tense. Marseille will be at home for the first leg at the Stade Vélodrome while the second leg will be played at Old Trafford on 15th March. Here's a short preview for the first leg of this round of 16 tie.  Marseille have got their season running after a poor start, with key players finding their form in recent times. The league champions will need to keep that sort of form going if they are to beat Manchester United and also make up ground on Stade Rennais and Lille. United suffered their first loss of the Premier League season away at Wolves earlier this month but seem to have put that blip behind them. They finished top of their Champions League group and went unbeaten. Marseille are unbeaten in their last five games with four wins and a draw and currently sit third in the league, three points off the top spot, the position they finished in last season. They finished second in their Champions League group behind Chelsea, and managed to beat the Premier League champions in a group game. Mathieu Valbuena, the French international striker returned to training on 19th February, but is highly unlikely to play in the first leg, which could leave Marseille with problems up front. Elsewhere, Luis González seems to have regained the form that helped power his side to the Ligue 1 title last season and Gabriel Heinze will face the club he left in 2007. Alex Livesey/GUnited will be without key defender Rio Ferdinand but Chris Smalling's performance against Manchester City—which saw him deal with Carlos Tevez effectively—will give United hope that the 21 year-old can form a solid partnership with captain Vidic Both the Da Silva's were injured during the victory over Crawley Town and Rafael is now a doubt for the first leg Nani has been inspirational in midfield this season and has been largely responsible for the teams' success this season Paul Scholes returns to the ground where he put in one of his best performances for England during the 1998 World Cup Rooney seems to have found his form once again and will be full of confidence after his spectacular winning goal against Manchester City Patrice Evra is set to play his first match in France since the World Cup fiasco and will be targeted by fans and players alike as they look to put him off his game Ryan Giggs recently signed a one year extension which will take him into his 21st season with the club and his experience could be exactly what is needed for United to gain the advantage in the away leg ENGLAND - JANUARY 25: Dimitar Berbatov of Manchester United celebrates scoring his team's third goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Blackpool and Manchester United at Bloomfield Road on January 25 EnglandThe Manchester United starting XI for the first leg is not entirely obvious Berbatov was completely left out of the squad for the FA Cup fixture last weekend—indicating that he is likely to start today—but he may lose out to Rooney if Ferguson goes with one striker and five in midfield with Carrick coming in his place is the formation I believe to be most likely: FRANCE - FEBRUARY 09: Loic Remy of France runs with the ball during the International friendly match between France and Brazil at Stade de France on February 9 (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)If Remy and Brandao are unavailable Marseille will have real problems up front They have been without a consistent goalscorer all season and may be deprived of all their first-team strikers on Wednesday night Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored with the last kick of the game as Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Marseille 2-1 on Tuesday and qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League Hojbjerg broke away to finish emphatically in the fifth minute of injury time sealing a Spurs comeback that means they progress as Group D winners while Marseille are eliminated from Europe altogether Clement Lenglet had earlier headed the Premier League side back on level terms after a Chancel Mbemba goal had given Marseille the lead at the break Hojbjerg’s last-gasp strike allowed Antonio Conte’s team to leapfrog Eintracht Frankfurt who also advance after a 2-1 win away to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal It was a pulsating contest at the Velodrome and it could have gone either way with Marseille left to regret a crucial late miss by substitute Sead Kolasinac Had he scored rather than send a back-post header wide of the post Marseille would have gone into the last 16 Instead Hojbjerg’s late strike condemned them to bottom spot in the section More details here... Joao Pedro found a bit of space in the box and picked out the top corner with a stunning finish for his sixth Europa League goal of the season including a blue flare lit up in the north Stand Brighton fans can do… slightly less impressively The final 120 seconds plus stoppage time were played out with the entire Amex on its feet followed by wild scenes of celebration at full time It will go down as their kits for the 15/16 season attention turns to Olympique De Marseille as they launch their "home" and "third" kits made by adidas The home kit will be worn before the close of the season in upcoming fixtures against Monaco and Bastia It is described as "resolutely sober" and carries a predominantly white base though is dressed with sky blue accents on the sleeves collar and lap belt. The Mao collar is the stand out feature in this traditional shirt as adidas have looked to bring a lifestyle element into this kit lending itself to leisure wear just as much as performance. The badge on the chest of the home shirt is held inside a circle design while the "third" keeps the traditional emblem in an increasingly minimal form. Taking inspiration from the Mediterranean Sea the kit has thin blue stripes which are used to symbolize the maritime world. Both smart additions which will look sharp on the pitch. What do you think of the new kits Few cities can boast an identity as unique as 416 thousand Liverpool failed to score in only one Champions League match last season - the encounter they lost against Marseille at Anfield last season They exacted a brutal revenge, administering a 4-0 hiding in France which which went some way towards helping Liverpool become the top scorers in last year's Champions League with 29 goals It's a statistic one Liverpool fan of my acquaintance is prone to parrot while drunk in a desperate bid to prove they were the "moral victors" of the tournament How they qualified for the Champions League group stages with Benoit "Brother of Liverpool flop and World Cup winner Bruno" Cheyrou and Mamadou Niang (2) doing the necessary This just in: Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is asking for £481m to sell the club to a group of investors from Dubai that's almost twice the £237m he claims to have paid for the club and "poured into it" not least when you consider it was only a couple of days ago that Ashley insisted "I did not buy Newcastle to make money" it's that time of year again and I hope you're all as excited about this latest Euro Tin Pot jamboree as I am Will Arsenal succeed in walking the ball into the net often enough to make another final What levels of tedium can Liverpool plumb this season Will Celtic achieve the unthinkable and win a match away from home Watch in fascination as Uefa schedule far more matches than are necessary to provide the answers to all these questions and more Needless to say it's pointing out an error on my part "I can assure you Liverpool flop Bruno Cheyrou has never won the World Cup," writes Sam Davies "Bernard Diomede is probably the Liverpool flop you're thinking of - he was in the French WC-winning squad of 1998." You're dead right with Liverpool setting out a 4-2-3-1 shaped stall with Mascherano and Lucas playing in the holding roles What with this match being played in the Stade Velodrome I can't help but think they'd be better off with Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton in the side 3 min: Bringing the ball out of defence and under no pressure whatsoever Javier Mascherano miscues and gifts possession to M'Bami who plays a ball through the centre for the lightning fast Mamadou Niang to chase 5 min: Marseille centre-half Ronald Zubar is beaten for pace by Fernando Torres but recovers to concede a corner as the Spaniard attempted to wriggle between him and the goal-line a Marseille defender flicks it on from the near post unwittingly teeing up a looping Torres header which goalkeeper Mandonda is forced to tip over the crossbar 7 min: Steven Gerrard sends the ball into the penalty area Marseille clear and Niang and Bakary Kone attack on the break Although Liverpool have been left short on numbers in defence 10 min: "No sponsor on the Liverpool shirts tonight - is that because of French law or has there been more financial knack today?" asks Marie Meyer "I don't really care about banks and travel companies I presume the conspicuous absence of the Carlsberg logo on the shirts of the Liverpool players is something to do with French or Uefa law as we'd probably have heard about it if they'd gone bust today 13 min: This is a very open game and Marseille go close when - I think - Taye Taiwo fires over when he should have squared the ball I was too busy congratulating myself on the quality of my probably joke to pay proper attention 15 min: Liverpool scythe through the Marseille defence before Babel shoots over from the edge of the box Dirk Kuyt tees up Steven Gerrard on the edge of the D outside the Marseille penalty area and the Liverpool skipper brings a smart save out of Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda 19 min: "Alcohol companies are not allowed to advertise on shirts in France," writes Paul Reverdy it would be a terrible shame if French children were encouraged to drink booze from an early age by the sight of some drinks company's logo on Steven Gerrard's chest it's not as if their parents aren't pouring wine down their throats by the gallon as soon as they come off the breast Marseille 1-0 Liverpool (Cana 20) Marseille's Albanian midfielder Lorik Cana puts his side ahead with a goal that's been a long time coming he beat the offside trap set by Liverpool's flat-footed back four and latched on to a marvellous Benoit Cheyrou pass over the heads of the defence He had all the time in the world to pick his spot and poke the ball low past Reina Marseille 1-1 Liverpool (Gerrard 24) A marvellous equaliser from Steven Gerrard Liverpool broke down the middle of the field He picked out Kuyt with a short pass along the edge of the penalty area then the Dutchman rolled the ball a little behind Gerrard on the edge of the D with the Liverpool captain sending a diagonal 30 min: Liverpool are awarded a penalty when Ronald Zubar sticks his leg out and trips Ryan Babel 30min: Gerrard scores off the foot of the right stick but his effort disallowed after Dirk Kuyt is penalised for encroachment Marseille 1-2 Liverpool (Gerrard 32) Steven Gerrard sends it low and right again but it's too well placed for him to be able to save it I forgot to tell you that Martin Skrtel has been booked for a clumsy 38 min: "Fantasy football always brings out the worst in me," writes Erik Kennedy "I've been pondering the following phenomenon: Fantacide The act of wishing ill on a player you'd normally support because he's not in your fantasy squad Eg: a normally sane and loyal Liverpool fan playing Anelka and Ibrahimovic up front might hope Fernando Torres gets injured Do any of your readers have similar evil thoughts?" Well Erik, I'd like to think my readers have lives, but seeing as you've brought up the subject, I can think of no better time to plug this 41 min: Marseille substitution: Modeste M'Bami off 42 min: Valbuena wins a free-kick for Marseille wide on the left and deep in Liveprool territory after making a bit of a meal of a poorly-timed Lucas challenge He gets to his feet and sends the ball into the mixer Marseille would have needed one Mananda nother in goal," writes Matthew Moore who is not here all week and thought the chicken was .. Half-time analysis: Dave Hannah writes: "Barry I've re-watched Gerrard's penalty a couple of times When you wrote that 'Steve Mandanda guesses the right way' did you actually mean 'Steve Mananda dives in the wrong direction' I believe you have misled your readers." I'm having a shocker with the auld typos tonight I'm too embarrassed to admit Marseille are actually 4-0 up More fantasy football nerdery: "I tend to experience the opposite phenomenon of the one Erik Kennedy describes," writes Nicholas Einhart. "I wish success on players on my fantasy squad who are playing against teams I like. For example, wanting Manchester City to beat Chelsea but hoping Deco can score a hat-trick while losing 4-3." More half-time analysis: "You were never one renowned for your work rate I know, but you're really going to have to pick it up in the second half, Glendenning," writes Pip Archer. "Some nice touches, but you'll never prosper under a manager like Benitez. Fancy dans such as yourself should be covering Arsenal." Second half: Liverpool kick-off, playing into what would be the Kop if this game was at Anfield. Their superiority isn't being reflected in the scoreline would suggest thus far, but continue to look vulnerable to their opponent's deadliest/only weapon: the counter-attack. 46 min: In the Liverpool right-back position, Lucas gets booked for a clumsy challenge on Mathieu Valbuena, who drops like a sack of spuds. The substitute takes the free-kick himself, but his delivery is poor and Steven Gerrard heads clear. 48 mins: Corner for Marseille, which Valbueno sends into the penalty area. Mamadou Niang gets on the end of it, but heads wide under pressure from Carragher. 49 min: An unlucky bounce off Fernando Torres precludes Steven Gerrard from notching up his 100th goal for Liverpool. 50 min: "Here's something you didn't know about today's game," writes Richard H, whose reluctance to reveal his full identity can probably be explained by the rest of his email. "Mauricio Pelligrino's (the Liverpool first team coach) father-in-law's name is Olivera L. Perisomell, which is an anagram of 'Liverpool' and 'Marseille'." 53 min: Liverpool win a free-kick wide on the left wing, which Steven Gerrard whips into the Marseille penalty area. Vitorino Hilton flicks it wide for a corner, which Gerrard also takes. Skrtel heads the ball down, it drops at Kuyt's feet, but his shot is blocked by Zubar. Marseille counter, but Kono is penalised for offside while chasing another defence-splitting through ball. 57 min: Not for the first time this evening, Lucas gifts possession to Marseille. Like myself, he's not having a great day at office. Perhaps he's preoccupied by the worry that it might be his turn to get burgled while Liverpool are playing away from home in Europe. 57 min: Having been sold short by a chested back-pass from one of his defenders, Marseille keeper Mananda rushes off his line to win a 50-50 ball against Ryan Babel. The Dutchman made it easy for his opponent by shirking a challenge he clearly didn't fancy. Chicken. 60 min: Marseille substitution from a few minutes ago: The unimpressive Ben Arfa off, Ziani on. 61 min: Marseille left-back Taye Taiwo skins Dirk Kuyt for pace down the wing (not the most difficult feat in the world, it must be said) and drills a low cross into the Liverpool penalty area. It's cleared. 63 min: Heaven help us all. A Monsieur Franck Galerne has written in to say that he's going to be using this minute-by-minute report to help teach the 3e anglais approfondi class to speak English proper. Are you sure that's wise, Franck? Won't somebody please, please, please think of the children? I suppose this means I'll have to go through it afterwards and correct all the spilling mostakes. 66 min: Free-kick for Marseille, about 25 yards out and left of centre. Mathieu Valbuena drives the ball into the wall. A couple of minutes previously, the Marseille substitute Ziani missed a glorious opportunity to draw his side level by sending a close range effort screaming over the cross-bar after being teed up by a wonderful Bakary Kone backheel. 69 min: As the camera pans on to Jamie Carragher in his default setting of stooped, looking knackered with arms at quarter-to-three, sweat pouring down his red face and a hunted look in his eyes, what better time to bring you news of two Liverpool substitutions: Torres and Gerrard off, Riera and Benayoun on. 71 min: On the left flank, Mamadou Niang does well to get a low cross into the Liverpool penalty area. Ziani swings his left peg at it and sends the ball sailing over the crossbar. 73 min: Lorik Cana tries the kind of long-range effort that prompts ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley to say "you need to do something very, very special to beat Jose Reina from there." 75 min: Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda pulls off one of the best saves I've ever seen. Liverpool attacked, the ball fell kindly for Ryan Babel on the edge of the six-yard box and the Dutchman tried to smash it home with only the goalkeeper to beat. Rushing off his line, Mandanda did his best starfish impression and the ball hit his left arm, which somehow kept the ball out. 78 min: "Can Dave Hannah (half-time analysis) read minds?" asks Robin Hazlehurst. "Maybe Mandanda did guess right but dived the other way anyway. Or maybe Stevie G was actually aiming where he dived but miss-hit it. Unlikely, but you never know." The second scenario isn't that unlikely. I still think he might have miss-hit the first goal. 84 min: The contributions of Benayoun and Riera have been negligible since they came on and the momentum is with Marseille at the moment. They've played well tonight and deserve a point. Liverpool substitution: Kuyt off, Keane on. 87 min: Liverpool attack courtesy of Yossi Benayoun down the right channel. Keane sprints in the direction of the far post, while Benayoun makes for the corner, where he wins a throw-in. 88 min: Niang wastes a good chance to equalise when he heads the ball wide of the upright from the edge of the penalty area. He appeals for a penalty, claiming he was pushed in the back by Arbeloa, but the referee isn't interested. Replays show that Niang did get a shove, but he should have scored anyway. 90+1 min An important interception from Pepe Reina, who cuts out a Benoit header across goal which was heading straight into the path of the substitute Samassa. 90+2 min: Pepe Reina saves the day once again, this time with his feet from Mamadou Niang, who really should have scored. Peep! Peep! Peep! It's all over - Liverpool get this year's campaign off to a winning start, but hats off to Marseille who gave them a very good game and will wonder how they didn't get a point at least. After-amble: Last word tonight goes to Justin Kavanagh, who wants to know if "the Carlsberg-free shirts are a new record for Liverpool losing their bottle so early in a season? Probably, eh?" thanks for your time and your emails, I'm off to correct my typos and insert profanities for Monsieur Franck's English class.
