the medieval town of Romans-sur-Isère is turning its empty shops into stylish self-catering stays
It’s certainly an eye-catching shop window
full of interesting artefacts – an old sewing machine stands poised over a sheet of leather
but to sleep in the appealing apartment inside it
with an inviting living room leading up several steps to comfortable sleeping quarters
A kitchenette and a swish modern shower room complete the picture
tastefully decorated and better than many hotel rooms – yet a fraction of the price

the Tannerie is part of a new scheme called BedinShop
aimed at regenerating the medieval town centre of Romans-sur-Isère
about 90 minutes south of Lyon in France’s Drôme department
but the Tannerie is particularly significant: this town of 33,000 inhabitants was once the capital of luxury shoemaking in France
Charles Jourdan - who partnered with Christian Dior - and Stephane Kélian - who worked with Jean-Paul Gaultier - were among the town’s factory owners

Photograph: Jean-Marc DorlisWhen production moved to less-expensive parts of the world and out-of-town supermarkets attracted business away from the historic centre
much of Romans-sur-Isère literally shut up shop
The situation prompted BedinShop founder François-Xavier Chambost to act
“I was walking along streets that had been buzzing with shoppers when I was a child
piles of old wooden pallets and empty shops,” he says
“I wondered if the youths could be taught to make furniture from the pallets that we could then use in shops converted to overnight accommodation.”
Old shutters or wooden crates double as shelves; sinks might be made from a traditional iron washing basinA walnut trader at the time, he got the town hall and social workers on side, gained invaluable business knowhow through French organisation Villages Vivants (living villages)
and convinced local landlords to invest in their properties in return for guaranteed rent
opened in April 2019 in a shop that had been vacant for 15 years; the sixth
“I try to give a soul to each one and reflect it subtly in the interior,” she says
Using a mix of upcycled charity shop finds
she has worked her magic in the apartments
incorporating original features such as exposed stone
Read moreReminders of Romans’ shoemaking past are everywhere
from the old tanners’ houses in the Quartier de la Presle to the 11 massive shoe statues dotted around town
starting with a huge red one outside the train station
taking in giraffe-motif footwear by a roundabout
a Louboutin in front of the pharmacy and a red-spotted pump by the Shoe Museum
Inside, I’m entranced by the enormous collection of footwear through the ages, including horrifically tiny shoes for Chinesewomen with bound feet, as well as enough modern-day heels to make Carrie Bradshaw swoon. For modern-day shoe fans, Cité de la Chaussure in the town centre has a tempting selection of handmade leather footwear from €49
The factory workshop was opened in 2019 by a group who wanted to revive Romans’ shoe-making tradition while helping the unemployed return to work
It’s good, but my favourite restaurant in Romans is Magma Terra
whose vegetable-leaning fine food can be matched with a flight of organic wine or beer
shoe-last towel hangers and a bed headboard decorated with the leather offcuts
And as I shut up shop for the last time by pulling down the blinds behind the double shop window
I can’t believe how quiet and private this town-centre dwelling feels
Accommodation was provided by BedinShop, which has apartments for two from €70 a night. Train travel was provided by Trainline
which has fares via Paris to Romans-Bourg-de-Péage from £186 return

PARIS (AP) — A man wielding a knife attacked residents of a French town while they ventured out to shop amid a nationwide coronavirus lockdown Saturday, killing two people and wounding five others in an act that led authorities to open a terrorism inquiry
France’s counter-terrorism prosecutor’s office said the assailant was arrested near the scene of the attack in the town of Romans-sur-Isere
as he was kneeling on the sidewalk praying in Arabic
It said one of his acquaintances also was detained

They said he had no identifying documents but claimed to be Sudanese and to have been born in 1987
authorities found handwritten documents that included arguments about religion and a complaint about living in a “country of unbelievers,” officials said
The prosecutor’s office did not confirm reports that the man shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is great) as he stabbed and slashed people
Romans-sur-Isere’s residents have been ordered to stay home except for a few exceptions
The victims were doing their food shopping
on the street that has bakeries and grocery stores
French media reported that the knifeman first attacked a man who had just left home for a daily walk — slitting his throat in front of the victim’s girlfriend and son
and then went into the local butcher’s shop
He grabbed another knife and attacked a customer with the blunt end before entering a supermarket
Some shoppers took refuge in a nearby bakery
French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner arrived at the scene in the town south of Lyon within hours and thanked shopkeepers for their help
Some 100 police and 45 firefighters were involved in the operation and securing the area
There have been a number of knife attacks in France in recent months
French police shot and injured a man in Metz who was waving a knife and shouting “Allahu akbar.”
another man was shot dead by police after he stabbed one person fatally and wounded two others in a Paris suburb
It is unclear whether the suspect in Saturday’s attack had psychological problems or any links to extremism
Analysts say some extremist groups see the upheaval from the virus pandemic as an opportunity to win over more supporters

The Left keeps describing the attack on the dance as "a brawl" but
it wasn't a brawl – it was an assault
Several people at the party reported hearing the attackers saying
"We're here to stab white people." Yet rather than admit the racial nature of this horrible crime
the Left's preoccupation has been with those who have marched in protest at the killing – "people from the suburbs who went all the way to the countryside to attack these peaceful French people" as one left-wing commentator put it on BFM TV
The failure of the authorities to keep delinquents in check has been a feature of many recent violent incidents in France
Thomas's murder was by no means the first with this sort of profile: similar cases keep making the headlines
each time reinforcing the view that the state has lost control and further inflaming public anger
And when people feel the state can't protect them
We may deplore that reaction: "but we cannot ignore it"
figurehead of the far-right National Rally (RN)
claimed that "armed militias" were organising raids
There has also been an indecent rush on the part of the right-wing press to publicise the Arabic names of the suspected assailants
Yet none of those presenting Thomas's death as part of a premeditated expedition against "whites" seemed to care that initial reports of the attackers setting out to injure whites have since been contradicted
blind ourselves to the rise in violence and ethnic tensions
But it should be the task of leaders to heal the wound
not pour salt in it; to call for respect and decency
As hooded men parade with torches through a small town like Romans-sur-Isère
Le Pen and Zemmour shut their eyes to the reality that violent speeches tend to lead to violent acts
And they will never acknowledge that "the model of society the far-right defends [actually] feeds on the deficiencies that it only exacerbates"

French regulator Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire (ASN) says it has found no traces of nuclear radiation after a fire broke out at Framatome’s Romans-sur-Isère fuel fabrication plant in southeastern France
French regulator Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire (ASN) says it has found no traces of nuclear radiation after a fire broke out at Framatome’s Romans-sur-Isère fuel fabrication plant in southeastern France
“The checks carried out by the operator did not reveal any radioactivity in the air in the premises or outside.” The Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) will carry out additional measurements in the environment
Framatome is setting up a surveillance system to prevent any new outbreak of fire in the premises concerned
ASN therefore “authorised the licensee to lift its on-site emergency plan
The fire was reportedly started by an industrial printer
According to the Drôme prefecture: “About forty firefighters whose teams specialise in technological risks were mobilized on site… As a precautionary measure
nearby buildings were secured and ongoing activities in the affected building were immediately halted
The employees present in the workshop were evacuated and brought to safety.”
According to Framatome the Romans site involves the manufacture of fuel assemblies for electricity production reactors and fuel elements for research reactors based on enriched uranium
Two basic nuclear installations (INB) are located on the Romans site
63 (manufacture of fuel elements for research reactors – CERCA) and INB no
98 (manufacture of fuels for nuclear power plants)

Suspect and two other men being questioned over attack in Romans-sur-Isère
French counter-terrorism police are to investigate a stabbing attack in which two people were killed and five injured
A 33-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker was arrested after the attack at Romans-sur-Isère, in the Drôme department in south-east France
one of whom shared a flat with the suspect
are also being questioned in police custody
announced on Saturday evening that it had opened an investigation into “killings and attempted killings connected to a terrorist organisation” and “criminal terrorist conspiracy”
who arrived in France in 2017 and was granted refugee status and given a 10-year residency permit
moved to Romans-sur-Isère in January after two years in Moras-en-Valloire
Aurélien Ferlay
told French television that the man had undergone professional training in leatherwork supported by social services and the charity Secours Catholique
Ferlay said he was “both stupefied and horrified by this attack”
which he said had left everyone “totally mystified”
made us think he would carry out this terrible act
he was polite with my staff and me and he posed absolutely no problem in our community,” Ferlay said
The local newspaper, the Dauphiné Libéré
said the man had been working in a factory at Romans-sur-Isère
and was unknown to French and European police and the security services
A statement from the counter-terrorism prosecutor’s officer said a search of the suspect’s apartment had uncovered “handwritten documents with religious connotations”
It said the as yet unidentified author of the documents “complains in particular that he lives in a country of sinners”
The suspect entered a tobacconist shop on Saturday morning and allegedly attacked the owner and injured the shopkeeper’s wife when she tried to help her husband
He then went to a nearby butcher’s where witnesses said he jumped over the counter
grabbed another knife and stabbed a customer before running out and attacking passersby in the street
A computer engineer aged 44 was killed while inside the butcher’s shop
was stabbed in the street while trying to protect his 12-year-old son
was in a serious condition in hospital and four other people – two men
described the attack as “an odious act that has brought grief to a country already sorely tested in recent weeks”
who travelled to Romans-sur-Isère after the attack
referred to the suspect’s “terrorist background”
He said: “I commend the full engagement of the security forces who quickly apprehended the suspect and who are now carrying out the investigation.”
Minister warns of risk from militias after death of 16-year-old blamed on immigrants and minorities
The French interior minister has called for the dissolution of three extreme-right groups after a series of marches were organised in response to the killing of a 16-year-old in the south-east of the country
Gérald Darmanin told France Inter broadcaster he was seeking to shut down Division Martel and two other groups he did not name
warning there was a risk of militias targeting people of different skin-colour
died from stab wounds after a dance party at a village hall in Crépol in the Drôme
Nine people believed to be connected to the incident have been arrested and placed under formal investigation for crimes including murder and attempted murder and some have been remanded in custody
Even though eight of those arrested were French
and investigators are still working to establish what happened
far-right politicians have argued that Thomas’s death was evidence of a danger from immigrants and minorities who they alleged had come to the village from public housing blocks in a local town
extreme-right groups have held marches over Thomas’s death
About 100 people believed to be connected to extreme-right groups marched through the nearby town of Romans-sur-Isère on Saturday
where some carried baseball bats and clashed with police
The police prefect in the Drôme said they had come to the town to confront young people from the La Monnaie neighbourhood
from where some believe the Crépol suspects come
although no names or addresses have been given by prosecutors
Six people aged between 18 and 25 were arrested as part of the far-right gathering on Saturday night
They were fast-tracked in front of a judge and given prison sentences of between six and 10 months for taking part in a gathering with a view to preparing violence
Five of them were also convicted for violence against the police
Another far-right gathering in Romans was dispersed by police on Sunday
About 30 people have been arrested over the extreme-right gatherings in recent days
including after an unauthorised march in the city of Lyon this week
“I will propose that a number of small groups are wound up,” Darmanin said
be they extreme-right or whatever radical movement [try to substitute themselves] for the law instead of the prosecutor and police.” He said there was a mobilisation of the extreme-right that wanted to “tip the country into civil war”
He criticised such militia for aiming to carry out what he called racist attacks
attacking people of North African origin or “shouting their nostalgia for the Third Reich”
13 violent projects by ultra-right groups had been prevented by the intelligence services
The state prosecutor in Valence has said investigators are still working to determine what exactly took place at the end of the village dance party in Crépol
said the violence appeared to have broken out for “petty reasons” rather than being a premeditated attack based on “race
nationality or religion” – and was perhaps sparked by a passing remark about “somebody’s haircut”
went to Crépol this week and said the “tragedy” there and the tensions that followed had put France at risk of “a tipping-over of our society”
He said: “It’s up to the judiciary to render justice
The communist politician Fabien Roussel said this week that French far-right politicians were exploiting the events at Crépol
the leading European election candidate for the far-right Reconquête party
run by former TV pundit and failed presidential candidate
wrote of the events in Crépol on X: “Now anti-white racism is hitting our countryside.”
Bardella alleged that witnesses had said young people from housing estates had behaved as “predators” and come to the village to “hammer whites” and “hammer young people”
PARIS (AP) — French counter-terrorism prosecutors have opened a judicial investigation after a knife attack south of Lyon left two people dead on Saturday
In a statement, prosecutors said charges will be pressed later Wednesday against the assailant, who was arrested by police minutes after the attack as he was kneeling on the sidewalk praying in Arabic
Initial investigation suggested that the assailant acted alone
Magistrates are considering charges of murder or attempted murder with terrorist intent
Two people were killed and five were injured in Saturday's attack in the small town of Romans-sur-Isere
which was in lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic
Residents were carrying out their permitted daily shopping at the time
but described him as a Sudanese born in 1987 who arrived in France in 2016 and obtained refugee status the next year
authorities found handwritten documents that included arguments about religion and a complaint about living in a “country of non-believers.”
Nearly two years ago, Clergerie was bought by US group Titan Footwear following commercial court proceedings in Paris, having filed for receivership in March 2023. However, Joe Ouaknine, businessman and owner of Titan Footwear, hasn’t been able to revive Clergerie. Was it for lack of investment
which used to produce nearly 500 pairs of shoes a week
and its workers were put on short-term unemployment
production later resumed but only in “fits and starts,” and with “constant raw materials supply issues.”
and generated a revenue of €4.9 million over the same period
According to AFP, Titan Footwear acquired the company founded by Robert Clergerie in 1981 in Romans-sur-Isère (Drôme) for 700,000 euros. As part of the deal, Titan Footwear has committed to preserving 45% of the company's workforce. Valérie Treffé-Chavant, the CFE-CGC union delegate at Clergerie
confirmed that 30 out of the 83 positions at the Romans-sur-Isère workshop will be retained
along with 18 out of 35 boutique positions
and 12 out of 21 financial and administrative positions.Dominique Bernard

The exhibition, curated by independent shoe stylist Olivier Jault, will highlight the French fashion designer’s collaboration from 1984 to 1996 with one of the era's shoe industry titans, Stephane Kélian
France's textile industry deemed Jean Paul Gaultier's ideas too eccentric to embrace

FeatureThe deeply divided town of Romans-sur-Isère is reeling from the death of a 16-year-old at a party in a neighboring village
fractures have only gotten wider in the aftermath
This is the story of a group of young boys completely out of control
roaming the gloomy streets of a neighborhood the size of a market town
The story of a long-standing and deep-rooted ghettoization
affecting a handful of blocks of flats housing 4,000 people
It is the story of a downward spiral and a collective capitulation that led to tragedy
The story of the Monnaie district of the town of Romans-sur-Isère
came to light with the indictment of nine young men – six adults and three minors – from the neighborhood
suspected of being involved in a violent brawl at the end of a village fête in neighboring Crépol – during which Thomas Perotto
The courts must now determine individual responsibility and whether the attack was premeditated
They must examine whether racist insults were used
as reported by nine witnesses out of more than 100
And they must determine whether the attackers were acting as part of an "organized gang," as suggested by the prosecutor
these questions seem to already be settled
there is no dispute over whether the accused are members of a gang
and the fact that they come from Monnaie is a given
It has long been a hotbed of unrest and violence
"My 16-year-old son was friends with Thomas at rugby
it's always the same guys," said David Guillon
a rugby coach at the club where Thomas played
who is also an elected representative for the Greens
and the head of a specialized prevention service

where the Australian’s main rival for the green jersey will almost certainly struggle
The former is next in line to the throne long held by the latter, the best sprinter Australia has produced. After collecting line honours and maximum sprint points on a windy stage to Romans-sur-Isère, Matthews is within striking distance of the green sprinter’s jersey won three times by the now-retired McEwen.
Read moreMatthews has admitted he reached out to McEwen before the 104th edition of the Tour
and an air of mentorship surrounded the encounter
After seeing the 26-year-old reduce rival Marcel Kittel’s sprint classification lead by nearly 100 points in just three stages
McEwen can be confident that the future of Australian sprinting is in good hands
On Tuesday Matthews’ Team Sunweb clinically executed the strategy devised by sports director Luke Roberts
causing the peloton to split with green jersey wearer Kittel left behind
Matthews was untroubled for the intermediate sprint
before hanging on against fast-finishing Edvald Boasson Hagen to secure the stage result
“Luke has had the game plan set perfectly over these last few days,” Matthews commented afterwards
Yet Matthews’ victory was tarnished by an altercation with Germany’s John Degenkolb following the stage
alleging he had been cut off by Matthews in the closing moments of the sprint finish
but first landed a right-hand jab on the Australian while they remained on their bikes
“We were waiting for the official result and he grabbed me on the way past,” offered Matthews diplomatically
I am not sure what they are going to do about it but I do not think it is very sportsmanlike.” Matthews and Degenkolb have been rivals throughout their careers – the former beat the latter to the Under-23 world road title in 2010
while Degenkolb triumphed over Matthews at the 2015 Milan-San Remo – adding extra spice to the fracas
But a slap will hardly quell Team Sunweb’s jubilation
The German-registered outfit already have one team member
with a practically unassailable lead in the King of the Mountains jersey
while another edges closer to the green jersey
Matthews is now just 29 points from Kittel with five stages remaining
Matthews was left “devastated” following a disappointing 13th place finish in Bergerac as Kittel won yet another stage
He spent minutes bent over his bike in anguish
and appeared to wipe away a tear before facing the media
The green jersey incumbent’s lead was growing by the day
and Matthews hinted that the points difference was insurmountable
After two stage wins in four days – and it might have been three if not for an ill-timed toilet break – Matthews looks unstoppable
and has demonstrated impressive climbing legs over the past week
With several difficult days in the Alps ahead
where Kittel will almost certainly struggle
the sprinter’s jersey race is very much alive
On Wednesday, Matthews will prioritise the 20 intermediate sprint points available following the first climb, before preserving as much energy as possible during a tortuous mountain stage. Kittel’s Quick-Step Floors colleagues, meanwhile, will battle to ensure their sprinter arrives before the time cut
failing which Matthews would be immediately elevated into green
while Friday’s stage 19 also has enough climbing to bother Kittel
With neither rider likely to collect points at the penultimate stage individual time trial
the maillot vert could be decided by a final showdown on the streets of Paris
