MORE than a hint of madness from Balally Players with ‘The Ubu Trilogy’ in the Tallaght Theatre
This is a nutty production full of ‘cuckoo characters’ with strong language
The Ubu Trilogy is an off-the-wall collection of plays penned by French author Alfred Jarry (translated by Kenneth McLeish)
Jarry’s trilogy of plays about the comically grotesque character of Pa Ubu
Ubu is acclaimed as the touchstone for the Dada and Surrealist movements
and much of the rest of experimental theatre in the 20th century
Pa clips the king and clinchs the crown before he inevitably messes things up and flees to England
‘Cuckold’ sees Pa and his nefarious minions
happen upon the home of poor old Peardrop and his polyhedrons
in a positively preposterous turn of events
Pa decides he’s had enough of ruling and opts to live a life of servitude and slavery
The show stars Seán Woods as the titular hero alongside Caoimhe Cronin as his loyal wife and queen
and features a wide variety of colourful characters
as Balally Players tackle the absurd world that is Ubu
This show takes you through three unique Ubu plays
and at the end of it all you’ll be wondering if we learnt anything
and running at the Tallaght Theatre (old Cuckoo’s Nest – not the Civic Theatre)
the Ubu Trilogy is sure to be a theatre-going experience that you won’t soon forget
Tickets are available for The Ubu Trilogy on Allevents and through any of the Balally social media accounts.

Night six of Newry Drama Festival last night
29 March saw Balally Players present David Ireland's 'Ulster American'
Festival Adjudicator Geoff O’Keeffe,in his opening
garnered a reputation for creating hard hitting and provocative work
Some of his other work includes “Cyprus Ave”,”The End of Hope” and “ Everything Between Us”
His play “Ulster American” first played at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018 to great acclaim before receiving a star studded production in London’s Riverside Studios in 2023
He described this play as a “biting social satire which explores misogyny
sexual violence and female agency in the entertainment industry”
The play challenges the company to razor sharp dialogue and to revel in the pitch black comedy
He commented that the production “must bring us three distinct characters
It must make us uncomfortable as we laugh and they must challenge us”
He felt the set felt “right for the work”… it felt “like a space that you would live in
very well conceived” with lots of texture and tone
It was complemented by the lighting and by a strong sound design which brought energy
giving a good sense of the characters and he noticed the subtlety of the colours of respective flags being brought out in the garments
led by Declan Rudden worked with three really really strong actors
Jay and Leigh, were excellent foils for each other and the relationship worked really well
he felt the scenes were shaped very effectively
there was always an energy in them” There was a sense of why these people moved round the stage
An aspect he felt which was really important at this festival was “the absolute necessity to feel that lines are being said for the first time
that was absolutely on display tonight” There was so much going on that worked extremely well
they listened to each other and they created really strong characterisations
Mr O’Keefe felt that the actor brought “wonderful energy
drive a sense of self in this characterisation ,thoroughly engaging
this was a really well judged performance”
Mr O’Keeffe felt this was a lovely foil to Jay
“He found so much comedy in the script and played it expertly
another really well constructed performance”
Mr O’Keeffe felt had a great sense of integrity in this characterisation
nuanced work which was so satisfying to watch”
Mr O’Keeffe concluded “ Balally players brought us a unified presentation

Jessica MageeThu 16 May 2024 at 20:34A man who secretly filmed his lodger while she was showering and then harassed her for months has been given a suspended sentence of 16 months
pleaded guilty to harassing a foreign student over three months between December 2022 and March 2023
At a sitting of Dublin Circuit Criminal Court two weeks ago
Judge Martin Nolan remanded Wang in custody for a fortnight “to think about what he did” while he considered his verdict
Judge Nolan described Wang’s behaviour as “disgraceful” but said he didn’t deserve a longer stay in prison
Wang was ordered not to communicate with or about the injured party in any way for the next ten years
Judge Nolan said Wang had videoed the woman twice in the shower and was attempting to do it a third time when the woman noticed the phone
Wang had hidden the phone in a laundry basket
balanced on clothes at the foot of the bathtub
Wang implied threats to disclose the videos and harassed the young woman for three months
The court heard that the woman had arrived in Ireland from China in 2021 to study and was offered a room to rent in Wang's house
that the woman paid €950 for her first month's rent in December 2022
asking her things like what she was up to and whether she would like to go to a bar
He also asked her to let him know when she wanted to have a shower
the woman was in the bathroom getting ready to have a shower when she noticed the accused's mobile phone balancing on clothes in the laundry basket
She immediately brought it to the attention of Wang's wife
who said her husband must have put it there by accident and gave it back to him
Wang overheard the conversation and heard the student crying
he sent her a series of text messages to the effect that she had to move out the next day
The messages also contained the following threats: “If you make a big deal out of what happened tonight and ruin my family
You better pretend nothing happened tonight.”
Wang's wife later rang the injured party and told her she had looked through her husband's phone and found many videos of her on it
Wang tried to contact the student through several social media apps
a messaging app used by the Chinese community
The woman always tried to block his contact
and after 18 incidents of attempted conversations
Wang was asking the woman to come back to the house
asking where she was and saying he wanted to apologise to her
Gardaí seized the man's phone and found two videos of the woman naked in the shower
Garda Kane said the videos had been deleted and then restored
and photos had been screenshotted from them and shared to Wang's own WeChat app
A victim impact statement was handed to the judge but was not read aloud
defending that there was no suggestion that the images or videos had been shared with anyone else
The court heard that Wang cooperated fully with gardaí and seemed to suggest to them that his behaviour had been an extraordinary misjudgement or a “moment of madness”
“Many moments of madness,” interjected Judge Nolan
Wang came to Ireland about twenty years ago from China and has always worked
He is currently self-employed as a taxi driver
A psychological report described Wang as extremely introverted and said his childhood had been “devoid of emotional expression”
Judge Nolan remarked that there were plenty of introverted people in the world and that this was neither a mitigating nor an aggravating factor
Counsel said Wang had made “an utter fool of himself” and put his marriage and his employment at risk
The court heard that the psychological report placed Wang at a low risk of recidivism
“He's a man who's learnt his lesson,” said counsel
submitting letters from Wang and his wife to court

Developer Bernard Doyle wants to build three apartment blocks at the Balally Shopping Centre site and a decision is due next month. Photo: Google Maps
Sandyford residents have claimed renters would “offer nothing to the community” in objections lodged to a scaled-down build-to-rent development of over 100 apartments.
The development by Westleton, a property company involving developer Bernard Doyle, will consist of three apartment blocks located at the existing Balally Shopping Centre, with a total of 129 units – 13 of these properties would be allocated for social housing.
This is scaled down from a proposal of 165 build to rent units which was lodged in April. It was changed following multiple objections from local residents and concerns raised by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council about the height of the development, which would have been up to eight storeys tall.
The local authority said it was “not in favour of building height in excess of six to seven storeys”.
Following this, Westleton resubmitted plans. The scale of all three apartment blocks has been reduced, now rising to seven storeys tall instead of eight.
The developer said these changes reduce the overall “bulk, mass and visual impact of the buildings within its receiving environment”.
However, the new proposal still received multiple objections from local residents.
One resident, Christopher Cummins, said while the size of the project had been reduced, the changes “did not go far enough”.
“The scale of the development will still be out of character with the surrounding area. As such, the original objections we had still stand,” Mr Cummins said.
“The scale of the development will still be out of character with the surrounding area. As such, the original objections we had still stand,” said the resident. Several residents also complained about the fact that the project would be aimed at renters.
Colin Byrne, a local resident, said: “The surrounding estates are generally settled family orientated places for those who are there for the long term.
“Short term lettings/social housing, which is what these units are for, do not fit in with the current mature neighbouring estates.
“There are significant concerns that come with this, for example, anti-social behaviour.”
Local residents Michelle and Tony Gordon said: “These premises are buy to rent, which means persons occupying these builds will move in and move out, offering nothing to the community or its growth.”
A decision on the application is due next month.

This article is over 4 years oldAddress: 30 Balally Grove Dundrum Dublin 16Price: €535,000 Agent: Hogan EstatesOne of the bonuses of properties located on large corner sites is the potential for development. Margaret Costelloe, who purchased 30 Balally Grove in Dundrum 20 years ago, placed a bid on the house the minute she saw the 89sq m property.
“At the time there were plans for a local Luas stop. As we have a shop in town, I really wanted to be between the city and the mountains as I love the area near Three Rock Mountain. I also had a horse in Kilternan so I knew the location was ideal for me.”
She also saw the development potential of the house as it was located on a corner site.
After two decades in the property, she applied for permission to build a new house in the side garden, in a move she refers to as “future sizing”. The new house which is mid-build and at first floor level, will be completed in the next few months, and this is the reason she has placed her current home on the market.
Margaret, along with her sister Mary, operate Costelloe and Costelloe, the accessories shop on Chatham Street in Dublin 2.
Their first business was Fine Pine, an antique pine furniture business, which they ran for over a decade.
They then changed their focus to sell smaller interior pieces that were not so heavy to lift, and established their Chatham Street shop 31 years ago. “One Christmas we decided to add a few pieces that could be bought as gifts, such as jewellery and hand bags. They flew out the door and we haven’t looked back since, and that was 18 years ago.”
In contrast to the shop where bags, hats and wraps come in every imaginable colour, her home is a palette of soft neutrals. “I really like simplicity, for me it’s all about space and light. I suppose my ideal would be to live outside, which is why there is so much glass and no curtains in the house.”
It is all a very subtle affair, which gives the property, dating from the 1960s a contemporary feel. When she first moved in, she took the box room upstairs and amalgamated it into the main bedroom. While this gives a large main bedroom that stretches the full width of the house, it was designed in such a way that it can easily be returned to a box room – and third bedroom – if required.
Costelloe also changed the windows and front door – which is now glazed. This, together with the glass doors to the rear – and open plan layout – bathe the interiors in light.
The rear garden, which extends to over 21 metres, has a raised deck and is home to a towering cherry blossom. There is potential to extend here, subject to planning permission. A tall timber fence has been installed between this home and Costelloe’s new build next door, for minimal disturbance while the new build is completed.
The property is now on the market through Hogan Estates seeking €535,000.

It comes after a woman was physically and verbally assaulted by three teenage girls on the Luas during her commute home from work last week
and footage of a separate violent incident was shared online
“This week we saw video footage circulating widely on social media of a very violent fight at Balally Luas stop in Dundrum,” Ms Madigan said
which took place in the open with other passengers and children around
“Many constituents have also raised with me what they see as increasing anti-social behaviour at Luas stops throughout the city
“I would like to see gardaí focusing their patrols on Luas stops to prevent them becoming a hub for anti-social behaviour.”
The Dublin Rathdown TD says Budget 2023 will deliver the recruitment of an additional 1,000 frontline gardaí
through Ministers Helen McEntee and Simon Harris
“It is vital that some of these additional gardaí be used to increase security at and around Luas stops in Dublin
“People have a right to feel safe and secure going about their daily commute
We need to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to this kind of unacceptable behaviour,” she added
Luas commuter Aanchal Mohtra today spoke about her ordeal after being assaulted by a group of girls on the Green Line from Sandyford on January 10
she said: “They started throwing popcorn at me and just thrashing me
“They were hitting me with their elbow or just kicking me and using all sorts of abusive language
“There was one lady on the Luas who tried to stop them..
and they tried to shut her up,” Ms Mohtra added

A POPULAR family-run cafe and bakery in Dublin has announced its shock closure within weeks
based at the Balally Luas stop near the Dundrum Town Centre has been proudly serving lunch
and Arab-inspired treats for the past seven years
But bosses at the business confirmed this week that they'd be "closing doors for the final time" in the coming weeks
Addressing their "beloved customers"
the company posted: "It is with the heaviest of hearts we share this news with you
"Unfortunately over the coming weeks Munch will be closing its doors in Balally for its final time
"We have proudly served you for seven years from Balally and our gratitude extends to all our valued and loyal regulars who are undoubtedly the soul of Munch.'"
"We will forever cherish the memories we made together."
Devastated customers quickly took to the comments to express their sadness at the announcement and wish the family all the best in their future endeavours.
One punter said: "You should be so proud. Seven years in Balally but forever a special place in our hearts."
You have put so much love and effort into this
Some recalled their happy memories of the popular cafe
with one comment reading: "The best memories were made there with all the staff and customers."
Another added: "Thank you for offering a place that offers halal food for the community in Dublin
Wishing you all the best for all your future endeavours."
One more gutted regular said: "We’re so devastated to hear this
Your cakes and freshly baked treats were our favourites."
Another poster wrote: "I’m so sorry to hear the news that you’re closing down
"I want to thank you all over the last six years since I’ve been coming in and you all have been so kind and helpful and I want to wish you all the best to you."
One more branded their closure a "massive loss" for Dublin
I was only in Dublin for a short time but you guys were always so kind and lovely
"What a massive loss for the Dublin food scene."
The closure comes amid a wave of popular Irish businesses closing their doors
Many have have pointed to the cost-of-living crisis and rising inflation as part of the reason behind these closures
warned: "If people aren't careful there won't be any local shops left."

At that time it was very much on the outskirts of Dublin
It was a community where friendships grew and lifelong family ties were made.”
That was over 40 years ago and Maura lived there since
