Dublin City Council is pleased to announce the opening today of Dublin city’s first School Street on Newbrook Road in Donaghmede
A School Street is a traffic-calming solution used to reduce the traffic outside a school by restricting access to the street during school drop-off and pick-up times
Parents and guardians are asked to either walk
scoot or use public transport to get to school instead of driving or
to park away from the school and walk the final leg of the journey
Limited access is allowed to the street during School Street operation times for students with additional needs and emergency services
This initiative is being implemented as part of the Safe Routes to School Programme funded by the National Transport Authority
The programme aims to improve safety at the school gate
alleviate congestion and increase the number of students who walk
Dublin City Council works in partnership with the National Transport Authority
An Taisce Green Schools and the school community in developing ‘front-of-school’ treatments for schools on the programme
Newbrook Road is a particularly busy residential street at school drop-off and pick-up times with 1,000 students accessing the four schools in the vicinity
The cul de sac section of this street made it an ideal location to trial a School Street
a School Street trial took place from June – December 2024.
The School Street trial was a huge success
with over 80% of survey respondents reporting that it made the street safer
along with 15% reporting a change in their travel behaviour from driving to using sustainable transport for their journey to school.
Walking & Cycling Officer with the Council's Traffic Section says
“We were delighted to see the implementation of this School Street following the successful trial
The removal of traffic from this section of the street instantly made it safer for students on their journey to school
cycling or scooting to school has huge benefits for students
It’s encouraging to see that there was an increase in active travel modes during the trial and we hope to see this trend continue.”

Some local residents want to see the old St Donagh’s holy well in Donaghmede memorialised in some way
drawing in a deep breath as he stares out over the green where he spent much of his youth
autobiographical coming-of-age ballad “Factories”
Dempsey sang: “From the corner of Holywell Road
see the sunset over St Donagh’s … see the sunset over the world.”
Did the songwriter’s younger self know that when he stood in that very spot
he was far from the first pilgrim to stand there contemplating his place on this earth
“I was more worried about not getting hopped on
I always felt there was something spiritual around here.”
While holy wells remain dotted across the Irish landscape
most have disappeared as housing developments have sprung up on every available plot
But Dublin City Council historian-in-residence Katie Blackwood has been highlighting the former sites of holy wells across north Dublin at a series of talks – including St Donagh’s Well – including in Marino in March
Once, holy wells like St Donagh’s were important meeting places for communities, revered as sacred connectors between the material and the spiritual realms, says Blackwood. Over 130 have been identified in Dublin
They serve now as a reminder of pre-Christian pagan roots
The water from these naturally occurring holes in the ground was celebrated for its magical
others were known for curing particular illnesses like eye diseases
is a stone’s throw from the gates of St John the Evangelist Anglican Church
“Water worship is a universal feature of prehistoric societies because of its life-giving qualities,” says Blackwood
the historian-in-residence for the council’s North Central Area
often on patron saints’ days or “pattern days”
and performed rituals like “rounding the well”
They would move clockwise around the well a certain number of times
They would say prayers and drink the water
“As Christianity was introduced on the island
holy wells and their traditions were subsumed and adapted by the new religion,” Blackwood says
“Holy wells that were already in use were dedicated to Irish saints
St Patrick and St Brigid the most common.”
the physical well at St Brendan’s is gone now but the spot is marked by a hawthorn tree
another natural feature once thought to possess special powers
Fairy trees and holy wells often come hand in hand
A man on a Massie Ferguson is making his way up and down the riverbank
who is 46 years working with Dublin City Council Parks Department
The well was already filled in by the time he started the job in 1979
But I do know not to damage that fairy tree
God knows what might happen to me,” he says
treating holy wells badly was thought to bring grave misfortune
“Damaging a holy well is linked to stories of cattle dying and even people’s houses burning down,” Blackwood said
Veering away from north Dublin for a moment
There is an ancient dolmen tomb in the locality known as the Giant’s Griddle
and the stone structure is flanked by a fairy tree
raging through a spruce plantation up the hill toward the tomb until it stopped
It’s not only holy wells and fairy trees dotted across north Dublin
Not far from St Brendan’s Well sits the Cadbury factory
Blackwood points out a mount covered in trees
It was probably connected to the well and fairy tree
Archaeologist Michael Stanley wrote about the mound in a 2011 Archaeology Ireland article
“When I first mentioned the Cadbury mound to my Auntie Bridie
she recounted a story from the 1950s about a man suffering a heart attack while felling one of the trees that grew upon it,” he wrote
“This was attributed to the fairies taking retribution.”
He also recounts a story of a man who dug into the mound and broke his leg
about a “strange face” that appears under the branches of one of the trees at Halloween
It’s “thought to be that of a man who attempted to dig the mound and went missing that night”
“ That these ‘suburban myths’ persist reveals much about local people’s regard for the past.”
Another account
seemingly referring to the mound at Cadbury
comes from a hand-written story by a school child in the 1930s
preserved in the National Folklore Collection’s Schools Collection
“There are several trees and hawthorn bushes around it
It is said to be a fairy moat and a crock of gold was buried there about eighty years ago,” he writes
A group of four young men went up to the mound to dig into it
and “one of them brought his pet dog as there was a life to be lost in the digging”
The men looked around and could not see him
Then they gathered up their picks and shovels and turned away
nor did anyone ever look for the crock afterwards,” he writes
said the company are “honoured to be the custodians of this ancient treasure which has inspired so much local folklore”
“We are committed to safeguarding this important monument so that future generations continue to be intrigued by its mystery,” he said
was on a green between St Donagh’s Road and Holywell Road
along what was known as the Kilbarrack Stream or the Donagh Waters
Samuel Lewis’ Topographical Dictionary of Ireland
says the well was visited “on St John’s Eve by poor sick people”
who rubbed themselves against the walls of the well and then washed in another one nearby
is derived from the pagan summer solstice festival
and has strong traditions associated with fire and fertility
Communities would gather by the wells and light bonfires to guide the sun and usher in a good harvest
Young men would apparently demonstrate their bravery and prowess by jumping through the flames
so that they would be blessed with children
“People really used it as an excuse for a good party,” says Blackwood
“It can be easy to think of people from the past as totally different
but it really humanises them when you realise that they
were always just looking for an excuse to throw a party.”
The St Donagh’s well was still there in 1958 when folklorist Caoimhín Ó Danachair compiled his list of holy wells in Dublin
The stream was culverted in the 1970s and 1980s
But there is a large black circle burned into the grass
Young people apparently still gather there for a bonfire and their own form of revelry on the spot
Blackwood pointed out letters to the Irish Press and the Irish Times by P
expressing his disappointment that the well was not marked for posterity
“The site is now an open space south of the shopping centre and the well could have been preserved as a centrepiece of this area,” he wrote
some local residents want to see the old St Donagh’s Well memorialised in some way
“I’d love for it to be marked,” Dempsey says
“I’d like to head down and spend time there once in a while
to commune with them and say hello to the Great Spirit.”
He’d had a disagreement with a potato peeler the day before
there’d have been no use washing his wound in it
“That well was known for helping eyesight problems,” he says
Dempsey’s work has always been marked by a sense of spiritual longing
“I never will forget the suffering that my people went through in my country and overseas,” he sang on “Negative Vibes”
from the same Seize the Day album that “Factories” appeared on in 2003
Dempsey says there was “a huge amount of creativity in this small little patch”
LiR and myself all came from around the same road and all had record deals
The performance artist Growler is from my road too
“We would always joke that there was something in the water around here
There is something magic around the Holywell,” he says

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL will close a northside street to traffic as part of the capital’s first “School Street”- an initiative aimed at getting parents
The initiative restricts traffic access to the four schools on Newbrook Road in Donaghmede to encourage people to walk
The initiative has been implemented permanently today after a trial last year
they are required to park elsewhere and walk the final leg of the journey
Newbrook Road is a residential street and a cul de sac
There are 1,000 students in the primary and secondary schools located there – St Kevin’s JNS
over half (55%) of Irish primary school children and 41% of secondary school students travelled to school by car
according to the most data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO)
Only emergency services and cars bringing or collecting students with additional needs will be able to access the street during the restricted hours
said this was a “positive” measure that would improve safety
He added that this is the first “School Street” piloted
but the council would look for other schools at which to implement similar measures
said the initiative had been broadly welcomed in the community
He said that this road in a suburban area was “difficult” for parents and guardians dropping off or collecting children at school – and for the people who live there
MacDonncha added residents would sometimes be blocked into their driveways during the peak school drop off and pick up times
“It’s been a problem for years this particular road,” he said
to encourage people to bring kids to school on foot
“I think it’s well worthy of support and let’s see how it works out.”
Dublin City Council’s walking and cycling officer
said: “The removal of traffic from this section of the street instantly made it safer for students on their journey to school.”

A northside school community says they’ve been left behind by the Department of Education
Gaelcholaiste Reachrann in Donaghmede has been waiting for 24 years for a promised facilities
The school has never had a permanent building
and it's also using buildings belonging to another school in the area
The five TD's for the area have come together to promise to push to get the school its much needed rebuild
all went on a tour around the Gaelcholaiste Reachrann today
They were invited to the school to see for themselves
the conditions the pupils and staff are working in after previous governments failed to secure them a permanent building despite a lengthy wait of over two decades.
When asked about what's causing the delays
"The original planning permission that was granted a number years back
it didn't meet with the criteria for the environmental policies that were being introduced
"The planning permission was resubmitted again to the local authority and that was granted so
we're now at a stage where the Department is telling us it's in stage 4 for tendering but how long have we hearing that for
"We just need to see that it's going to be delivered."
Frustrations have been rising in the school community and just two weeks before the election the pupils of the school staged walk-out in protest at the previous government’s lack of action.
4,000 people also signed a petition calling on the Department of Education to intervene and improve standards in the school
Locals are hoping the newly elected TD’s will stand good on their promises

Agent Knight Frank is guiding a price of €700,000 for a residential site in north Dublin with full planning permission secured by Gannon Homes, owned by developer Gerry Gannon, for the construction of 18 new homes.
The 0.84-acre (0.34-hectare) site, at Grattan Lodge, off the Hole in the Wall Road in Donaghmede, has approval in place (Dublin City Council planning reference 3977/17) for 10 four-bedroom houses (136.8sq m), one one-bed duplex (50.5sq m) and seven two-bed duplexes (85.6-87.8sq m). The approved houses are two storeys while the duplex element of the scheme rises to three storeys.
The lands are zoned Z14 Strategic Development and Regeneration Areas under the Dublin City Development Plan 2023-2028, the aim of which is to seek the social, economic and physical development and/or regeneration of an area with mixed-use, of which residential would be the predominant use.
The site is near the 53-acre Father Collins Park, Clarehall Shopping Centre, Donaghmede Shopping Centre and Swords Pavilions shopping centre. The surrounding neighbourhoods of Portmarnock, Malahide and Howth offer a range of amenities, including restaurants and shops.
The site offers quick access to the M50 and M1 motorways and Dublin Tunnel, while public transport links include the nearby Clongriffin train station, which is just a kilometre away, and the 15 and H1 Dublin Bus routes operating along the Hole in the Wall Road.
Robert Wilson and James Meagher of Knight Frank say: “We expect strong interest in this site given the lot’s size and its attractive housing mix.”

a 26-minute walk with a busy road in between
the traffic starts to pick up on Grange Road in Donaghmede
They pass Grangemore Park and a long line of cars that lumber along the curving street as they head slowly north
towards the junction of the R139 and Hole in the Wall Road
zipping away once they reach its roundabout
and 400m up the Hole in the Wall Road is Father Collins Park – and inside Father Collins Park is the closest playground for residents of Donaghmede
It isn’t a convenient spot for Donaghmede parents to bring their young children
it’s a 26-minute walk with a busy road in between
a mother of two and member of the Donaghmede Estate Residents Association
“It nearly has to be scheduled as a half day out.”
“It’s into the car and let’s go down,” she says
Browne has seen a growing number of new families in the north Dublin suburb
But they lack a playground for their children
Around the corner from her home is Donaghmede Park
outdoor gym equipment and even a pair of boules courts
What Browne and her neighbours would welcome
“We walk through the park every day to the local primary school
and they would 100 percent use it if there was a playground.”
she and the residents’ association have raised it with Dublin City Council
or that Father Collins was always in our vicinity
That is what we’ve always come up against.”
Browne sits in her living room as her son and daughter prepare to head off for a swimming lesson
and has been an active member of the residents’ association on-and-off
It was during the first lockdown that she got involved in a volunteer group devoted to improving the park
“We wanted to make it appealing to more people
But the one consistent request that she encountered from parents has been for a play facility
and they’re almost past the stage of using a playground.”
I wanted to fight for it years ago,” she says
“And I have friends with younger children around here
It would be amazing to have a facility like that down the park because we’re trying to bring in a load of attractions.”
The neighbourhood has changed in recent years
“Like when I first came here there were much more elderly people
with younger and younger kids,” says Browne
calling for a new playground to improve the park further
At a meeting of Dublin City Council’s North Central Area Committee on 19 June
independent Councillor John Lyons put forward a motion asking the council to prioritise the funding and installation of a new play facility in Donaghmede Park as soon as possible
Locals had been in contact with him after they learnt that the council had found money for playgrounds in McCauley Park and Kilmore West
“They feel like they’ve been abandoned in terms of play facilities for their children.”
The council is playing catch-up with investment in play facilities
“There is pent-up demand and I think Donaghmede is an area that is part of that.”
said Donaghmede had not been identified as an area that lacked play facilities
as much of the area is in the catchment of Father Collins Park
The playgrounds there and at Belcamp Park are showing their age and need significant investment to bring them up to standard
“These upgrades are considered to be the priority for available playground budgets in the short to medium term.”
Lyons welcomed the news of the upgrades to Belcamp Park and Father Collins Park
While improving Father Collins Park is positive
it’s still quite a way for kids in Donaghmede to travel
young children can actually walk to a playground within 300 yards of their front door.”
O’Carroll said that a new play facility in Donaghmede Park was not the main priority for his department right now
Father Collins Park’s playground’s rubber surface needed more than the patch ups of recent years
The other urgent matter was the playground in Belcamp Park in Darndale
“Belcamp is possibly one of the saddest playgrounds in the North Central Area.”
we will spend it,” O’Carroll said in response to Lyons’ motion
O’Carroll said that a new parks strategy is about to go out to public consultation
The last one had identified where parks were needed the most in Dublin in 2016
The Parks Strategy 2019 – 2022 said that a playground that can be accessed within a walk-in zone of 500 metres
while 1,000 metres is seen as having a reduced level of access
Based on those standards in the North Central area
the strategy highlighted a lack of provision in Belmayne
From the centre of Donaghmede on the Newbrook Road
access to Father Collins Park is a 1.5km walk
For parents with young children that isn’t ideal
“Every area should have a decent playground you can walk to within a very short distance of your front door.”
The council’s Play Strategy 2022 to 2027 says that the council’s capital spending on playgrounds is based on making sure there are places to play in deficit areas
Fianna Fáil Councillor Daryl Barron says his hope is that the Donaghmede area will have a new playground in 2024
I tried to seek funding of €150,000 from the discretion fund for Donaghmede playground,” he says
That was pushed back as the council is currently working on creating playgrounds in Kilmore West and McAuley Park
“But the reality is Donaghmede needs additional social infrastructure
and that’s a priority for me over the next 12 months
It is just after 3pm as Ciara Niamh Browne strolls around the edges of Donaghmede Park
A drizzly rain falls as some teenagers play football on one of the pitches
She passes by the fairy garden and wildflowers growing along the fences
“We planted those seeds last year and they are just gorgeous when they are in bloom,” she says
she points to some recent features added by the council
a stretch of the tarmacadam walkway has been painted for different games like hopscotch
“We have got this little obstacle ground,” she says
Some bucket swings would be nice for toddlers

Some of the wind turbines which were installed in Fr Collins Park
Wind turbines installed in a Dublin park at a cost of €1.15m in 2010
will be taken down in the new year as they are “past their useful work life”
was hailed as Ireland’s first “self-sustaining city park” when it was built by Dublin City Council at an overall cost of €20m
Five wind turbines were designed to provide renewable energy for the park’s lights
A report at that time found that roughly three-quarters of the park's electricity had to be imported to keep the lights on
Dublin City Council has now said the turbines are “past their useful work life”
and are scheduled to be taken down in the new year at a cost of roughly €60,000
which has won five awards for architecture and sustainability
is overlooked by the Priory Hall apartment complex and large parts of the park are now fenced off
One worker said the turbines are to be pulled down because they haven’t been maintained and have fallen into disrepair
Sinn Féin Councillor Micheál MacDonncha told the Irish Independent that part of the problem was the “replacement parts for repair” could not be sourced
it might be that the council needs to ensure that all such infrastructure is sustainable and repairable in the long term,” he said
“This may include the council having the capacity to carry out repairs without relying on one source for parts.”
The wind turbines were to be maintained by a Canadian firm under a five-year inspection and maintenance program from the time they were installed
Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom Brabazon said: “The wind turbines are emblematic of the area
so there is considerable anger in Clongriffin and surrounds that the wind turbines are being removed
“They signified a new era of ecological and environmental respect going back to 2009 when the park was designed and constructed and opened
“There is also an art piece with an inverted oil rig signifying reduced carbon production
Mr Brabazon said he suggested at a recent meeting that the parks department put out a tender for the replacement of them by utilities for the generation of electricity for export to the grid
“Whatever has to be done needs to be done quickly
so that residents can get full use of the park once again,” he said
Dublin City Council said that Fr Collins Park
is a “well-used resource for the expanding population of Clongriffen and Belmayne”
“An international competition delivered the park design
including the concept of sustainability expressed in part through the use of the iconic array of wind turbines along its central promenade
“The wind turbines are now past their useful work life and are scheduled to be taken down early in the new year on the advice of the wind turbine maintenance company
“The value of the removal contract is approximately €60,000
it is intended to assess options for continuing the sustainable energy theme within the park and to reimagine the use and animation of the park.”

The Men’s Shed Association is a place in which all men have the opportunity to maintain and improve their well-being on their own terms and within their own communities
The Irish Men’s Shed movement which began in 2011 in Tipperary and has spread throughout the country
was set up in 2014 and now helps many retired men with socialising
gaining new skills and building a sense of belonging
“Most gentlemen who retire from work find it difficult to re-adjust and this has been a great eye-opener for all of us,” one member said
“It does embrace the challenge with coping with retirement
it gets men together and men aren’t always reliable with sharing with others but I guarantee after a couple months here they are all good talkers
“As for myself I lost my daughter tragically out jogging
and again this was a great place for me to be able to go to
thought and spirit in the period immediately afterwards and still is very comforting that there is a place I can put my head down and say ‘I am safe here.”
