the galaxy far In episodes four, five, and six of Andor’s second season Bix has left behind the planet where she was assaulted combined with the character’s earlier sonic torture at the hands of the goulish Imperial scientist Dr has her plagued by nightmares and self-medicating with drugs while she’s essentially trapped in a Coruscant safe house Yet even as Bix seems to be an avatar for all the suffering and trauma the Star Wars galaxy has to offer Arjona is adamant that her character is not a victim told you what was going to happen to Bix throughout this season It gets so dark. What I love about Tony is that he really believes information is power Knowing what happened to Bix made me really focus but every scene scares the crap out of me when it’s Tony Did Disney put any constraints on how Andor could depict an attempted rape scene When I read it for the first time I could not believe that I was going to say the word rape It was so important to me because there are so many victims that felt present with me that day Why was it so important — beyond representing the brutal realities of history? To be able to backslap your abuser and react the way Bix reacts it’s like how everyone wishes they would react You wish you could just destroy him and not let him touch you So to perform that scene where Bix wins and has the upper hand was really moving to me It was one of those scenes that lingered in my body How do you reconcile Bix’s strength as a character with the amount of suffering she endures?I’ve learned so much about this character because within her weakest moments Bix is someone that holds her dignity so high There’s also a lot of strength in Bix asking for help Bix is maybe the first character in Star Wars to have PTSD What does it feel like for you to be the avatar for the mental costs of war something we haven’t really seen in this franchise despite it literally having “War” in the title? That’s a great honor To be able to push the needle and push these boundaries and talk about these subjects on such a large scale I used to suffer from panic attacks and I never see that in film or TV This show is about real dynamics that humans go through It’s gonna take you way more than a year to heal from that does it feel a little unfair that it seems like all the weight of this theme is coming down on Bix That she’s the one person who’s experiencing all these horrors of torture and rape and mental-health fallout? No Bix sometimes finds herself in the role of a damsel in distress How do you create agency in a character whose plots frequently involve waiting for rescue?I think it’s much more complex than a damsel in distress because she feels so much shame Shame that she’s not able to be a part of her dream — of the change she wants to create — because of what’s happening to her mind and her body She got tortured and almost raped and had to flee you’ll see how Bix has to make some really crazy decisions and those decisions flourish into some pretty cool things We also see Bix self-medicating with drugs something else I didn’t expect to see in a Disney Star Wars series It’s a far cry from the last time we saw drugs in Star Wars when Obi-wan waves away a guy trying to steal death sticks with all the subtlety of a D.A.R.E Luthen went in there to finally give her that mission she desperately wanted but he quickly changed his mind within seconds of seeing her and this space just to see the slippery slope and to see someone so strong go down this rabbit hole “It’s when we relax that the dreams come back.” We don’t typically see a lot of relaxing in Star Wars out of necessity Why was addressing the downtime and how it impacts Bix important? She kind of feels like she’s in this prison right She comes from Ferrix where there’s hustle and bustle stuff that’s going on constantly around her and when her partner Cassian leaves she has nothing to do there She can’t go outside and just go for a walk because Cassian’s so paranoid So when they’re together in this domestic environment and they relax within each other Sometimes we’re so busy that we are not connected to ourselves all these anxieties start popping up because we’re finally paying attention to them This trio of episodes ends with Bix getting revenge on Dr Do you think that functioned as therapy for Bix it’s Tony Gilroy and it’s so much more complicated than just simple revenge This is not gonna cure Bix from one day to the next but it’s going to be a process before she’s finally put that to rest and can move on Password must be at least 8 characters and stop. Star Wars: Andor, Season 2 is now already six episodes deep and about to drop three more Andor is about to drop one episode in particular that will make even the most hard-to-please fan sit up and take notice Here's when to stream Andor Season 2 and why Episode 9 is a such an incredible banger that can't be missed No spoilers ahead for episodes 7 through 12 Andor Season 2 will drop its next three episodes This is the third three-episode block of four overall This is the last block of episodes before the final three drop next week on May 13 and 9 of Andor Season 2 will hit Disney+ on Tuesday night at 9 p.m Big Disney+ shows tend to drop in the evenings these days. This is a change from the 2022 release schedule in which Andor episodes dropped early in the day Andor Episodes 7-9 Plot and Timeline Okay without giving away any spoilers, Andor Episode 7 will jump ahead another year meaning we're now just two years before the Battle of Yavin AKA the moment where the Rebel Alliance attacks the Death Star.  this block of Andor episodes also reveals several key pivot points in the overall story let's just say that one crucial encounter finally happens we're not just talking about droids here.) none of this will be exactly what anyone expects even if some of it is what fans have been hoping for If you remain unconvinced that this show is one of the most compelling versions of Star Wars this block of episodes will turn you to the Andor side of the Force He's written three critically acclaimed books on pop culture the making of Star Trek, and the history of Dune. He owns more James Bond novels and Sherlock Holmes books than is reasonable.  she narrowly staved off an attempted sexual assault by an Imperial lieutenant she moves into a hideout apartment with Cassian on the planet of Coruscant—finally able to experience a period of sustained romance with her partner if also still struggling to overcome her trauma Arjona’s visceral portrayal of Bix’s inner torment reaches a turning point at the end of episode six Gorst into a trap before hooking him up to the same interrogation machine—that is torture device—that he subjected her to in season one Bix sees the light here—a new dawn for herself Episode six’s final seconds reveal Cassian waiting for her outside indicating that they pulled off this gambit together—and are now ready to move forward Arjona had been eagerly awaiting this cliff-hanger which lands at the midpoint of Andor’s final season “It makes me feel really emotional because it’s our goodbye season but it also feels right,” she says on this week’s Little Gold Men and stay tuned for audio excerpts.) “We’re leaving with a fucking bang because everyone just really brought it this season.” Vanity Fair: I know you are given a sense of your character’s arc in advance what was it like first reading Bix get her revenge at the end of episode six Adria Arjona: [Series creator] Tony Gilroy believes that information is power; he doesn’t believe that withholding information is power he pretty much gave me my whole season arc right when season one ended but that still doesn’t remove the fact of actually having to perform it Bix is trying desperately to come back to her own to that person that we all met in season one episode one—so when I read that turning point for her here it was like I finally got something for Bix to fight back Bix is struggling while fighting to find a way forward With everything that happens with her and Dr you really understand how much she’s struggling with these nightmares you see her coping with these nightmares in a very different way She’s addicted to these droppers because she desperately wants to get better and wants to be a part of this rebellion and have a say—to have some importance with Cassian and Luthen This is what’s going to make me feel better There’s so much happening that she wants to be a part of it’s Tony Gilroy—it’s so much more complex than revenge She says at one point to Cassian in these episodes “I can handle more than you think.” You’ve spoken really from the very beginning about how Bix is underestimated what was she trying to communicate—and what did she need from him They support each other in a very beautiful way throughout these episodes They both believe that they’re a part of something greater They believe in the cost; they believe in the Rebellion Please let me be a part of it because that’s what’s going to save me Help me help myself.” It’s what she’s begging for she’s in a very dark place and almost speaking like an addict he talks with Cassian about how Bix is a potential liability What do you make of that perception of her Where is he at the end of the episode in terms of his feelings toward her if they only knew what she was doing behind closed doors and what she was hiding Bix feels that the second [Luthen] comes in He surprises her and she’s embarrassed and ashamed—the house is a mess There’s so much shame in that scene for her All she’s ever wanted was for Luthen to take her seriously and be like I don’t know if she’s showered in a couple days Solidifying this with Cassian—Cassian believing in her and believing that she’s not a liability that Bix is somewhere in there—means the world to her Luthen also says to Cassian that it would’ve been more “interesting” if Bix didn’t tell Cassian that he stopped by and spoke with her It’s that beautiful trust that they both have Bix has learned so much that at this point she’s like it’s shameful for her to even speak it out loud but the way she tells Cassian is different “He wanted me to be a part of something.” She twists it a little bit to see if Cassian thinks or believes what Luthen believes and she’s okay with showing her true self to him It’s probably the only person she does that with It’s so lovely to see you and Diego actually finally get to play a real romance for a few episodes Diego’s so incredibly generous and so smart when approaching a scene so I knew personally I was going to learn a lot Bix finally gets to experience this love and this trust and I think being from Ferrix and loyal being tattooed to her soul experiencing this love with Cassian and going through this rebellion with a partner felt right that tribal ritual that they both perform solidifies everything and it tells you so much about these two characters He wanted to showcase that these two characters were lived-in They had experienced so much through life together and I remember just being in this rehearsal space with Diego Diego took over that scene in a very beautiful way and I trusted him like Bix would trust him throughout the show and that was the starting point of who these characters were going to be this season Diego has expressed his desire to tell the story of Cassian and Bix in the year we do not see and I’m so excited for the arc of these characters and where this season ends for every character The journey that we all go through in the season is so precise and so beautiful that I’m at a place right now where my mind can’t wrap itself around that one-year gap and I haven’t quite thought about it a lot How did you approach Bix’s physicality and internal torment Especially given the passage of time between these episode batches—each covers a year so I was so scared that I wasn’t going to be able to get back to her Her mental state was one that I wanted to pay a lot of justice to and I had all these questions for Tony: “What kind of woman is she Is she someone that shoves things under the rug “A little bit of everything.” When you deal with trauma and I really wanted to pay tribute to that And Bix is dealing with all of this while also dealing with a whole rebellion happening right outside her front door Everybody from season one came back season two—meaning hair I felt protected and in a very safe space to go to the places that I had to go through especially for episode three [in which Bix is assaulted] and showcasing the abuse of power in Star Wars Being addicted to droppers also felt really important and relevant Is there anything for you in just getting to play in different settings Bix is the most Ferrixian woman in the world [Laughs] She’s incredibly grounded and loyal she was excited about the idea of leaving her home and fighting for what she believed in and being more involved in the cause and helping Cassian and Luthen But the way she leaves is so heartbreaking She heard in the back what was going on with [Cassian’s mother] Maarva Leaving a place that you love so dearly and then constantly fleeing—Bix is not grounded at all this season Trying to find her footing is all she’s desperately trying to do throughout all these episodes She almost feels like she’s in a little bit of a prison these experiences of trauma and feeling trapped There were moments where I felt frustrated for her You go to these places and it’s all fictitious I’m very happy in my own life and I get to come home to something very different And she’s just never a victim—I learned that from her as well Her dignity as a Ferrixian woman is contagious I don’t think you see Bix leave the Coruscant apartment until the very end I know you’re not necessarily filming in order but you can feel a real release in your performance Bix used to run her own shipyard and was outside constantly and moving To be in a place where every day is the same and repetitive she walks every step with so much power to get to Dr I was constantly on this very dark set and I didn’t see the sunlight It’s from six in the morning until 6:00 or 7:00 So you’re not seeing sunlight at all for days and days To finally be able to film a scene and breathe fresh air felt really gratifying This interview has been edited and Andor actor Adria Arjona has opened up on the cathartic "justice" that her character Bix Caleen enjoys in this season's sixth episode I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get Arjona's thoughts on the emotional release Bix feels following events that transpire in season 2 episode 6 Full spoilers immediately follow for Andor season 2 episode 6 and its predecessor's final few episodes It's an understatement to say Bix has been put through the emotional wringer in one of the best Disney+ shows Her troubles may have begun in Andor season 1's early entries which saw Bix contact nascent Rebel Alliance founder Luthen Rael to set up a meeting between him and Cassian Andor the risk she took was nothing compared to the traumatizing events she'd be subjected to later that season when the Galactic Empire invaded Ferrix to track down Cassian Bix was caught in the proverbial crossfire As one of Cassian's closest allies (she was his ex-girlfriend Bix was taken prisoner and psychologically tortured by the callous Doctor Gorst to force her to tell the Empire where Cassian is Long story short, Cassian rescues Bix in the Disney+ series' season 1 finale and as we learn in this season's first episode is an agricultural planet in the Outer Rim called Mina-Rau Bix is still mentally and emotionally trapped by the horrifying events she experienced The first three episodes of one of 2025's new Star Wars shows the events of which take place 12 months after last season's finale are not only full of more trauma-laced moments including almost being sexually assaulted by an Imperial Officer in episode 3 but also reveal she's plagued by nightmares of Doctor Gorst which occur one year after season 2's first act Box has become addicted to the illegal in-universe substance called Death Stick It's this two-year cycle of never-ending mental and emotional anguish that makes the final sequence depicted in 'What a Festive Evening' all the more cathartic for Bix when Cassian is called upon to conduct a new we learn that Cassian and Bix have been sent to dispose of Doctor Gorst whose secret lab is situated on Coruscant – the same planet the pair have been hiding out on for months Knowing how important this mission is to her she uses the same psychological torture equipment on the evil scientist before Cassian destroys Gorst's headquarters to make it look like it blew up in an experiment gone wrong "[Showrunner] Tony [Gilroy] has a really beautiful way of instilling confidence in you without actually giving you a compliment!" Arjona joked to begin with. "But, really, I wanted to do justice to how he wrote Bix's arc this season and by what happened to her at the end of season one. "After last season's finale, I had so many questions for Tony because I was really curious to see how she was going to cope with it. How would she deal with it? Would she shove it under the rug or try to face it head-on? I was really curious to see how she was going to cope with it "I very much identify with Bix as a character, who's someone who has to act tough and be strong, and be part of something great," Arjona continued. "But, thanks to what happened in season one, she's physically and mentally unable to play a role in the rebellion, which frustrates her. "That big moment [in episode six] allows her to redeem herself and, as you'll see very soon, she re-finds herself throughout the rest of the season. She has come back into her own and you finally see the sparkle in her eye, which she had in season one, again. It's like 'you've gone through so much, but now you're back to who you were'. It was really special to see her overcome that and take ownership of her future once more." Andor season 2 episodes 1 to 6 are out now. Three more episodes will arrive on May 6/7, with the final trio being released on May 13/14. And sure enough, nine days later he made it Instagram official posting a snuggly photo of himself with Arjona out to dinner with friends in Japan plus another of them all smiles while the waves and wind kick up around them as well as one of the Puerto Rican-Guatemalan actress standing under a neon Harley-Davidson Cycles sign "Japan, you are a dream come true you blew my mind," the Meili Vodka cofounder captioned the May 20 carousel "We're so thankful for everyone who opened their homes making memories with new friends and old friends sharing another amazing adventure with mi amor."  that's Spanish for "my love." And it's no surprise that Arjona also digs big bikes considering Momoa isn't just an avid rider he's also a collector of vintage and custom motorcycles "My lady likes to ride," he told Entertainment Tonight at the June premiere of The Bikeriders "I travel everywhere and bring my bikes wherever I go when I'm shooting I don't think about anything else 'cause you gotta be on it." And we can only assume Arjona is passionate about protecting the environment like her boyfriend who's aiming to reduce plastic waste with his sustainable bottled water brand ManaNalu The pair have yet to spill any significant details about their relationship timeline but it appears they met years ago while making the 2021 Netflix movie Sweet Girl starring Momoa and Isabela Merced as a father and daughter out for revenge after suffering a tragic loss Arjona was also single for the first time in some years having separated from lawyer husband Edgardo Canales in 2023 after four years of marriage But it's a small world after all and the 32-year-old joined the cast of Momoa's former stepdaughter Zoë Kravitz's directorial debut Blink Twice Though while Momoa was at the 2022 premiere of The Batman in support of Kravitz post-split from Bonet—"It's still family you know," he said at the time—he was not at the Blink Twice premiere last August Yet it can't hurt that Arjona is a massive fan of Kravitz's, telling CineXpress "It was really cool to see how protective she was of her actors and her direction was very She knew exactly what she wanted and she orchestrated the tone of the movie which is the biggest challenge of the film Arjona also starred in Richard Linklater's romantic crime caper Hit Man with Glen Powell shot the final season of the Star Wars universe series Andor and starred in and produced the indie dramedy Los Frikis in the Dominican Republic Hence her noting that waiting at the airport was "the only time where I can kind of have a second," speaking to IndieWire in December “I want to showcase different versions of what a Latin American woman can be," she said of representing her culture onscreen "So those three stereotypes that we’re so used to seeing a Latin American woman as To balance out going to the dark side for a role, she explained to Powell in a winter 2024 Interview conversation, "I try to surround myself with people I love and trust, and who make fun of me and are funny. in shimmering flashes as we talk We’re chatting over Zoom as she leaves yet another city behind working her way through the press tour for her upcoming film Los Frikis white AirPods peeking out from under glossy dark beach waves I’m half tempted to ask her to switch the light on in the car so I can see her better (a face like hers being obscured in any way feels criminal) Her phone seems to be propped up on a knee the screen jolting from time to time with the car’s movements the whole setup feels less like an interview and more like a catch-up between friends—and it seems to suit Arjona just fine In the midst of all the chaos that 2024 has brought to Arjona’s schedule Maybe it’s because she’s spent so much of her life in transition: a busy Wednesday isn’t anything to sweat when even your childhood was filled with packed bags and last-minute moves (the actress was born in Puerto Rico raised in Mexico City and lived in Miami until she turned 17 after which she moved to NYC to attend the illustrious Lee Strasberg institute) the actor seems to be the most comfortable in motion—and the past few years have been nothing but forward motion for Adria Arjona she appeared in a myriad of titles: Season 2 of True Detective Arjona took starring roles in two major franchise productions: Lucasfilm’s series Andor and Marvel’s film she was co-lead of Richard Linklater’s steamy thriller Hit Man opposite none other than white boy of the year Glen Powell played Sarah in Zoë Kravitz’s buzzy directorial debut film Blink Twice and was just honored as a TIME100 Next alum Arjona has appeared on our screens for over a decade the release of independent picture Los Frikis that seems to be what she considers the highlight of this stellar year Directed by Tyler Nilson & Mike Schwartz Los Frikis is the story of a group of punk rockers in 90s Cuba who inject themselves with HIV in the hopes of finding freedom and independence in one of the treatment homes the government had set up to help monitor patients It is a film that sheds light on a forgotten part of Cuban history one that helps bring to the fore the story of a group that was vital to the cultural growth of the country’s music scene Arjona’s turn as Maria—a nurse who works in one of these facilities—grounds the piece in the somberness you’d expect from a modern audience We—like herself—know how deadly diseases like HIV and AIDS are; the young men who decide to inject themselves in the hopes of escaping their home do not Arjona knew that she needed to be a part of telling their story I was really surprised that I didn’t know that this had happened in my own history That this was what was happening in Cuba at that time.. I was just so surprised that people were searching for freedom in their own country and they found it within a disease they didn’t even fully understand it was so full of joy and complex and had so many layers It was hard for me to describe how I felt after I finished reading it All I knew was that I had to be a part of it." The film marks another career milestone for the actress who is also credited as an executive producer for the first time It’s not hard to see why; her enthusiasm as she talks about the making of this film is nothing short of infectious Arjona projects none of that cool cynicism about the industry The actor understands that the opportunity to share stories like this one is a rarity Los Frikis is shot entirely in Spanish—Arjona’s mother tongue—and features a cast made up of only Latin actors She’s spoken Spanish in other roles (most notably as Helena in Narcos) but this time it was in service to a story that she felt ownership of “Whenever I’ve spoken Spanish onscreen [before] it was always for American projects,” she shares it let her unlock a part of herself she didn’t usually have access to A lot of the stuff that I access as an actress I’m translating it to English in a way because I mostly act in English.. I speak the language fine but I think in Spanish when it came to those bigger scenes it felt a little bit more fluid and seamless because it was easier for me to get there.” Hollywood does not have the best track record when it comes to platforming stories that aren’t white-centric; recent reports have found  that only 5.5% of speaking characters on the silver screen are Hispanic or Latin with their projects also routinely receiving lower production and marketing budgets than their non-Latin counterparts despite receiving more acclaim and money at the box office the industry seems to be adamant in pushing the same tired drug dealer/ violent criminal trope the likes of which Netflix’s Griselda have been accused of perpetrating most Latin actors are either forced to play into the tropes themselves to get work or simply do not work Theirs is a culture and people we have not been allowed to know fully “This movie is as authentic as it can be and I’ll tell you why: instead of the directors wanting to put their fingerprints on it they [Tyler and Mike] very much took a step back and gave complete freedom to the actors to step in and change the lines We had table readings and meetings where people were like there’s this,’ or ‘We say things like that.’ They gave ownership of the script to every one of the actors And they gave their lead a producing credit And nobody makes films like that except fucking Tyler and Michael.”  Arjona talks about being on that set the way one would describe their ideal home: safe If Arjona played a guardian in Los Frikis on screen all young Cuban actors who bar one had never left their home country before—let alone act in a film—was Arjona’s main priority “With the kids—I call them kids but they’re grown ass men who are fully 18 20-year-olds—I took a really big responsibility for making sure they felt safe We all lived on the same floor and I had access to them they had access to me if they needed anything I really wanted them to feel good because it was the first time they had left home In some ways that became my process for finding Maria.” It’s a sense of responsibility that every immigrant understands Just as our elders held our hands when we moved to these unfamiliar countries just as they translated for us at the corner stores and threw us welcome parties we all know that one day it will be our turn to be the elders whose responsibility it is to help those who come after us Los Frikis seems to have been that moment for Arjona “I understood that what they were experiencing was a big deal,” she remembers “I didn’t want to make them feel like outcasts for feeling homesick And that sort of melted into my process and ended up molding what Maria would be like which was someone who was fiercely protective but she doesn’t have the heart to tell them She just wants them to enjoy every minute of that experience.” Arjona gets visibly emotional as she talks adding: “All I wanted was them to have the best time making their first American movie They’ve been dreaming about this for so long Everyone is still very much a part of my life Eight of them are here and working and pursuing their dream.” The parallels between her story and those of the people whose lives this film revolves around are not lost on Arjona who moved from Miami to New York at 17 to study acting “[Being young,] you want that freedom to be creative,” she continues “To have an opinion since you are trying to form your identity The stakes were so much higher [for these characters] than what I had to deal with at their age And freedom means everything to us artists.” I ask Arjona if she ever identified as someone who was punk—if she shared in any way the fierce sensibility the musicians of which Los Frikis is paying homage I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with Arjona This is a woman who has carved out a space for herself in an industry that has seemed hellbent on shoving Latin actresses like her into whatever boxes felt convenient Whether it be from the backseat of a taxi or onstage at a film festival she’s fighting to help her people be seen on their own terms Photographed by Paola Kudacki at former lover of Cassian Andor and perhaps one of the few people who truly cared for him. At the Andor panel in Star Wars Celebration Japan Adria Arjona — who plays Bix — teased what lies ahead in the show’s final season for the character… and suggested that there’s more to her relationship with Andor than either character might have still believed I really believe that Bix is the most Ferrixian woman there is and she’s away from home and kind of really trying to reconstruct herself What that means for her and how she’s going to cope with everything that happened with Doctor Gorst is… very interesting and then you get to kind of get a sneak peek into this beautiful relationship that starts forming.” rest assured that Arjona isn’t talking about Bix and Imperial officer Gorst She was actually teasing that the second Andor season is going to answer some questions people had about what she and Cassian actually mean to each other after everything that’s happened are you guys together?’” she told the crowd you’ll really get to see these two characters come together Fans of all ages from all over the world will come together to celebrate the cultural phenomenon, Star Wars.
