After receiving an aggregation license from the Croatian Energy Regulatory Agency (HERA) last year
ENNA Next has now prequalified for the provision of auxiliary services
including automatic (aFRR) and manual (mFRR) power reserve services
ENNA Next, part of Croatia-based ENNA Group, also operates a virtual power plant, as an aggregator. Aggregators and virtual power plants are an energy transition novelty
Their role is to provide flexibility in the system and help integrate renewable energy sources more efficiently
ENNA Next contributes to grid stability by performing mFRR and aFRR services
The firm said it actively participates in balancing by utilizing its portfolio of electricity producers and consumers
They are switched on or off depending on the balance in the system
which contributes to the stability of the power grid with mFRR and aFRR services
is currently in the prequalification process with its technical units to be able to include power from renewable sources – solar power plants
The automatic frequency restoration reserve (aFRR) is for an automatic adjustment of energy production or consumption within minutes to tackle a frequency deviation
It is a continuous backup system for grid stability
The manual frequency restoration reserve (mFRR) is activated manually when larger adjustments are required
The reserve allows transmission system operators (TSOs) to intervene in a targeted way to ensure balance
ENNA Next also operates a virtual power plant (VPP)
industrial facilities or refrigeration or air conditioning chambers)
Through constant communication with HOPS
ENNA Next optimizes the production and consumption of energy within the virtual power plant
it provides additional income to the partners within the VPP by participating in the auxiliary services market
30 April 2025 - It is the second time this year that MVM contracted gas-fueled and hydrogen-ready power plants at sites of former fossil fuel facilities
said it earmarked most of its EUR 1 billion investment plan for energy and logistics

ENNA Group currently operates in three sectors – energy
It said it earmarked most of its EUR 1 billion investment plan for energy and logistics
Its energy division plans to invest EUR 240 million in geothermal energy
Investments in photovoltaic plants are estimated at EUR 330 million and the plan is to install 25 MW to 30 MW per year
The group owns solar power plants with an overall capacity of 10 MW while 75 MW is in the pipeline
ENNA earmarked EUR 40 million for batteries within its alliance with Croatian company Rimac Energy. They established a strategic partnership in October 2023 for the production and storage of renewable energy
The group intends to invest EUR 330 million in PV plants
The company has installed 22 power plants with a total capacity of 5 MW within ESCO projects
It intends to invest another EUR 25 million investment in the segment
The company also plans to install chargers for electric vehicles
The group has decided to change the name of its subsidiary ENNA Opskrba
It would continue business operations under the name ENNA Next
The firm would offer a one-stop shop model or all energy services in one place
with electricity supply focusing on green energy
purchase of electricity from renewable energy sources
ENNA Next will offer all energy services in one place
ENNA Next is slated to expand its electricity supply business into Slovenia and Italy
It plans to start purchasing renewable electricity in other markets in the European Union
Currently it is only active in Croatia and Germany in the segment
ENNA said it is preparing to enter Slovenia as a natural gas supplier

OMR spoke to the founders about how they plan to succeed where others have not

If Jakob Bergmeier's grandmother wants to chat with her relatives or see the latest family pictures posted online
all she needs to do is place a card on her "Enna dock." Without doing anything further
she sees the family picture gallery or a video call with her grandson opens automatically
Simplicity and accessibility are the core ethos behind Munich-based Enna Systems

All the planning was done in advance in the family Whatsapp group
all unbeknownst to Bergmeier's grandmother who doesn’t own a smartphone

where the founders have to comply with standard book rates in Germany
Co-founder Moritz Kutschera got the idea for using NFC technology from an episode of the OMR podcast with the Toniebox founders
And it makes a lot of sense that if children can operate a Toniebox
the same principle should work for seniors as well," says Kutschera
Enna is by no means the first company to bring a senior-friendly end device to market
There are and have been numerous competitors both in their home market of Germany (Lylu
the proportion of senior households has risen from 29% to 33% between 2002 and 2022

The story of Enna Systems begins in the winter of 2017
when Jakob Bergmeier tells his long-time friend Moritz Kutschera about his idea
Fast forward to 2020 and the onset of pandemic
Many senior citizens around the world were completely isolated from friends and loved ones
Just how great the digital divide between young and old is becomes apparent
Bergmeier decides to quit his full-time job as an engineer and concentrate 100% on Enna
A novice when it comes to founding a company
Bergmeier turns to his friends Kutschera and Tim Haug

The entire situation is one that Paul Lunow is all too familiar with
it was his great-aunt Luise and her struggles with technology that inspired him to conceive
develop and launch a simple solution for seniors
"So many people have tried to get older people online (...) Far too often they were unsuccessful," said co-founder and financier Florian Schindler in an interview at the time
The start-up developed a tablet and software for seniors
everything tailored to the needs of older people
Nepos failed to gain traction and fell by the wayside
"I would do a lot of things differently if I had to market a product like this again today," says Paul Lunow
We had very high-quality standards and would have had to take smaller steps much faster." In the interview
Lunow said that they wanted to offer both hardware and software completely in-house
but in the end they were unable to finance the hardware
The new approach of only focusing on software also failed and thus they never even made it to market
enna co-founder Kutschera says: "Basically
we have our own hardware with the Enna dock
which is much cheaper than producing an entire tablet
as was the case with other providers of senior PCs
And then we also see ourselves as a software company
We are convinced of the market potential," he says and adds: "I think the biggest hurdle is always market entry
That's where most people have failed so far."
Nepos turned to newspaper publishers to get the word out—a seemingly logical decision on the surface as newspaper readers tend to skew old
"It often happens that a grandchild sees our product on Tiktok or Instagram and then brings it into the family," says enna Kutschera
Individual videos from enna now have a reach of millions on Tiktok
The solution is often purchased by relatives
the start-up wants to serve both target groups by advertising not only on social media
Nepos founder Lunow believes that the topic of digital participation will always be important
who change their apps and digital devices as often as their clothes
seniors tend to remain loyal to a product once they have a functioning system." Lunow sees the potential in that regard in setups like those from Enna Systems
he does not believe that the solution of working via cards will work as they are “too limited.”
Kutschera is of a different opinion: "We see ourselves as a platform that bridges the gap between generations
With emotional storytelling on Tiktok and Instagram
the majority of paid ads reach more than 650,000 users on Tiktok
Although Enna Systems only has around 20,000 followers on its own Tiktok channel
which achieved over two and a half million views
The space has attracted other competitors. Berlin-based Generation Reach
which involves a card reader and cards that can be used to call up content or execute commands such as starting a video call
The device is still only available as a prototype
the system should be on the market by the end of 2023
the product can only be pre-ordered on the website
Enna is already hatching expansion plans and will be available in Austria beginning this year
Further partners are to be brought on board and the company is currently in talks with major media companies
as well as with electronics and book retailers about plans to to enter the retail sector

The field of Pharmacology and the College have lost a major leader with the death of Salvatore (Sam) Enna
the second of five children of Faye and Veto Enna
He attended a parochial grade school and the local Jesuit run Rockhurst High School and Rockhurst College
He then pursued a Masters degree and a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Missouri
His focus on neuropsychopharmacology began with a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas
After a year with Alfred Pletscher at Hoffman-LaRoche in Basel
he took a third post-doctoral fellowship (1974–1976) with Solomon Snyder
in the Department of Pharmacology at Johns Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore where he began his career-long research on γ-amino butyric acid (GABA)
He then joined the Department of Pharmacology and Neurobiology at the University of Texas Medical School
Houston rising to the rank of full Professor in a mere 4 years
to take the helm of the newly created Nova Pharmaceutical Corporation as its Scientific Director
he and Colleen returned to their hometown when Sam was appointed the Chair and Professor of Pharmacology
Toxicology and Therapeutics at the University of Kansas Medical School
In addition to his path-breaking research on GABA
Sam turned his energies to scientific editing
he served on the editorial advisory boards of over a dozen journals in pharmacology and neuroscience including the Journal of Neuroscience
He was the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (1998–2002)
of Biochemical Pharmacology (2003–present) and series editor of Advances in Pharmacology (2009–present)
his international reputation for scholarship contributed to his election as Secretary General of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacologists
which led to world travel for him and Colleen and the development of numerous foreign friends
Sam received several distinguished awards including the John Jacob Abel Award for most promising pharmacologic scientist under 40 (ASPET)
the Daniel Efron Award for basic research (ACNP) and the Otto Krayer Award for lifetime achievements in Pharmacology (ASPET)
This description of Sam’s accomplishments does not adequately capture his essence
I met Sam when he became a senior fellow in Snyder’s laboratory when I was a starting Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at Hopkins
I think that our shared bemusement over the contradictions of academic life cemented our bond that was leavened by his trenchant humor
We managed to fashion opportunities to continue to work (and laugh) together on ACNP committees
NIH study sections and pharmaceutical consulting
One of our favorite times was our annual dinner
Invariably it focused on reviewing the lives of our children spanning years from grade school to college to their adult accomplishments and marriages
the family was the center of Sam’s attention and love
Sam will be missed by countless friends from around the world not only for his wit but for his wisdom

EXETER — Enna Chocolate's Hacienda Victoria Ecuador 76% Dark Chocolate bar was crowned a winner at the 2024 Good Food Awards
Enna Grazier was presented the award during a ceremony in Portland
The annual awards recognize food companies dedicated to "sustainable
“It was an absolute pleasure and honor to share the festivities with my family
and it made the win so much more special,” Grazier said
The bean-to-bar chocolate is made in Grazier's Exeter shop, Enna Chocolate
with cacao she purchases direct from the producer Hacienda Victoria in Cerecita
The farm's mission is to responsibly preserve the Nacional Arriba cacao bean and bring ethical and positive biodiverse impact to cacao farming
“It is an honor to work with these beautiful cacao beans and share their flavor with the world,” Grazier said
are also used in many other products in her store
Grazier’s chocolate bar was selected from a highly competitive field of submissions from all over the United States
The winners were selected through rigorous blind tasting and sustainability vetting
“The Good Food Awards considers all chocolate submissions together: they do not have sub-categories for dark chocolate or for chocolate with creative additional ingredients like fruits or nuts," said Grazier
"So to be recognized for a simple dark chocolate among so many other kinds of chocolate bars is extra special.”
The recent recognition comes after Grazier won two awards from the 2023 Americas Bean-to-Bar and Craft Chocolatier Competition
Grazier has been making chocolate from bean to bar for nearly a decade
Her hobby turned into a profession after chef Evan Mallett tasted one of her samples and asked if he could sell them at his restaurant
She started making the bars in her kitchen
until she moved into her current space and cafe on Front Street
It was August 2018 when I made the journey to Enna
my grandfather’s hometown tucked deep within Sicily
Everything I had imagined was suddenly there before my eyes—cobblestone streets
centuries-old buildings and stone-carved churches
towered over the countryside with breathtaking views and winding roads that zig-zagged
The vibrant blue sea crashing against white cliff sides
The coastal towns were full of colorful art and salt-of-the-earth people
The age-old architecture of places like Agrigento attracted thousands of tourists
my great-grandfather left this land for America
He traveled through Ellis Island and ended up in the Buffalo
having first emigrated to Argentina before deciding he didn’t like it
What’s left of my grandfather’s family is very far removed
It’s the children and grandchildren of the cousin of my great-grandfather (both the cousin and my great-grandfather have passed)
But we couldn’t travel all the way to Sicily without seeing them
setting up a table that extended into the outdoor seating area
The few people that did speak both were constantly being used as translators
shifting between three different conversations at a time
My dad got a little savvy and used a translating app
and it would translate the words into Italian aloud
layers of soft eggplant blanketed with rich
And the various 2-litre water bottles filled with red wine scattered across the table made the English speakers try to speak Italian
As the late setting sun went down under the cliffside
They certainly don’t call Sicily God’s Kitchen for nothing
It was incredible to see this little island where so much of my culture stems from
It was amazing to connect and bond with my Italian family
and it’s an experience I’ll treasure for the rest of my life

trying to interact plausibly with each other in a language that few if any of them know well
the strengths of the work were magnified by the singers’ easy command of
Endless fine nuances of text delivery enriched what might have been capable but somewhat flat renditions
had the singers been a mixed bag of foreigners (however proficient
What I just wrote in the three paragraphs above may sound like some kind of reactionary nativism — a symptom of the xenophobia that has been wreaking havoc in the body politic in the US and elsewhere in recent years
It’s a recognition that national traditions have their own validity
We expect that a Broadway musical will be performed by native English-speakers
for whom the text is crucial and multilayered: performers such as (c
1985) Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin or (in recent years) Kelli O’Hara and Daveed Diggs
I am therefore delighted to welcome this world-premiere recording of a once-famous opera from Denmark: August Enna’s Kleopatra
The past few decades have seen the release of two of his operas (Young Love and The Little Match Girl) and a CD of orchestral works
But this long-lived and once-renowned Danish composer (1859-1939) composed 12 other operas
And the most famous of them all is the present one
based on the wildly popular 1889 adventure novel by English author H
Cleopatra: Being an Account of the Fall and Vengeance of Harmachis
The family was originally from Italy; the father
was devoted in particular to the works of Wagner and — an odd bedfellow for Wagner — the French opera and ballet composer Léo Delibes
Kleopatra (the name is accented on the second syllable) was a semi-failure at its first performances in 1894
but it triumphed a year later when Queen Kleopatra and her handmaiden Charmion were sung by the sopranos for whom Enna had originally intended the roles
It reportedly also “met with huge success in Berlin
including — if one can believe the booklet-essay — 50 performances in a single year (1897) in Amsterdam
But modernism soon came to Danish musical life with Carl Nielsen
because that traditional Romantic style was itself highly cosmopolitan
as Enna showed by taking Wagner and Delibes as twin models.) Kleopatra and the rest of his works gradually vanished
The 2019 production at the Danish National Opera — source of the present recording– marked the work’s first performance in 122 years on Danish soil
We are lucky that Dacapo and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation recorded those performances: the CD set goes far toward vindicating Enna and his vision of a native musical life that could stand shoulder to shoulder with what was being done in European lands then recognized as more obviously “major.” Enna’s style in Kleopatra reminds me of Wagner’s operas from some 50 years earlier (mainly The Flying Dutchman and Tannhäuser)
enriched with numerous decorative orchestral touches that evoke French and Italian models
Charmion’s Act 1 lament contains a little piping oboe figure with grace note that comes right out of Aida
end with persuasively energetic cabaletta-like sections
much like those in Italian and French operas of the previous half-century
the vocal lines lie comfortably on the voice and display (in William H
I was often captivated by short orchestral commentaries preceding or following some statement by a character: surging arpeggiated figures from the strings
Enna knows just when to have the orchestra double the voice (much as Puccini was doing around the same time)
One notable case of the latter technique occurs when the high priest Sepa demands (in Act 1
scene 1) that Harmaki (the heir to the pharaonic throne) be firm in his plan of murdering Kleopatra and thereby freeing Egypt from Roman control
Each moment makes its point and then moves on
here oddly translated “Overture”) take an hour and 50 minutes
making the work far shorter than most Wagner operas or French grand operas
And eight of those minutes are a lovely ballet sequence that could be omitted but I hope won’t ever be
This ballet would also work well on a pops-orchestra concert
Harmaki — to summarize the plot briefly — enters Kleopatra’s court in disguise as an astrologer
for she has called for someone who might interpret her dream
(Haggard presumably was adding a bit of the biblical Joseph into the story.) Kleopatra instantly falls in love with her would-be murderer
tries to persuade him to be loyal to his people
A scene from the 2019 Danish National Opera production of Kleopatra
Charmion then reveals his plot to Kleopatra
who arrests Charmion’s father (the high priest Sepa) and the other conspirators
Harmaki stabs himself with the dagger with which he had once intended to murder Kleopatra
as Charmion — who loved him but betrayed him — collapses on top of him
“heartbroken,” in a melodious love-death that would make a fine concert aria (less than four minutes)
Among other effective theatrical details are a veil that Charmion accidentally drops (and that the queen
finds) and a wreath of hyacinths that the queen places on Harmaki’s head in Act 1 and that
then gathers to his breast (a bit like Bizet’s Don José with Carmen’s flower)
If we are ready now to discover the virtues of other mainstream opera composers from the mid and late 19th century that I have reviewed here in recent years (by, say F. Lachner, Bruch, David, Gounod, Saint-Saens, Godard, Lalo), why not Enna or another Scandinavian, Olander (his opera about a mythical Swedish heroine, Blenda)
and you can stream the beginning of each track there as well
and in the program books of major opera houses

A fine soloist can’t rescue a conservative Dane
Description: A fine soloist can’t rescue a conservative Dane
Musicians: Anna Agafia (violin) Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra/Joachim Gustafsson
Works: Enna: Violin Concerto; Symphony no.2
The Danish composer August Enna was born in 1859
whose music sounds like the work of a dangerous radical by comparison
The curiosity is that Copenhagen was no backwater by the time Enna wrote his Violin Concerto in 1896
Many composers from the cold north have felt a yearning affinity with southern climes; Enna’s distant Sicilian ancestry
his own experience as both a violinist and an opera composer
and his evident admiration for the example of Tchaikovsky
Enna makes his slow movement the work’s centre of gravity
lifting a fragment of Canio’s ‘Vesti la giubba’ from Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci for melancholy melodic inspiration
Neither outer movement is especially quick
but both of them bristle with Flesch-accented technical challenges which Anna Agafia takes in her stride
mostly overlooked debut on the Claves label earlier this year with concertos by Nielsen and Szymanowski
Her tone is beautifully centred even through hatfuls of double-stopping
and she has a singer’s feel for the ebb and flow of a melody

Read: Violinists Anna Agafia and Mairéad Hickey win Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad prizes
Agafia’s elegant phrasing also deserves more shapely support than she receives here from the Bogotá orchestra under its Swedish music director
Their backward placing in the recorded mix serves her well
though they give a more stylish account of themselves in the fairy-tale
Why no Danish ensemble could be found to do the honours
A chance to hear the world premiere of a brand new violin concerto commissioned and played by Joshua Bell was the highlight of a trip to the Colorado Music Festival for Emma Baker
Anna Agafia will record her debut CD as part of the Thierry Scherz Prize
while Hickey enjoys a cash prize for her interpretation of a contemporary work

where she was a member of the varsity swim team while studying Biological Sciences with a minor in Psychology
she was told that the back injury and concussion that she had suffered her freshman year was not healing
This was a huge emotional setback for Enna
No one – student-athlete or not – would ever feel the way she did and she was going to make sure of it
Enna was nominated to serve on the NCAA’s Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) where she was later voted in as Vice-Chair
she began representing both the American Athletic Conference and the student-athlete voice within Division I
she helped plan a conference wide mental health initiative
to promote mental well-being and access to resources for student-athletes
The campaign is currently in its second year and has reached national attention
The campaign also had an impact at her own university
where the athletic department hired a total of 3 licensed mental health practitioners and 50% of the football student-athletes sought out mental health resources
Enna also represented Division I student-athletes on the NCAA’s Committee on Safeguards and Medical Aspect of Sports
the Sport Science Institute’s Mental Health Task Force
Her voice on these committees has allowed the NCAA to implement Division I legislation
mandating mental health resources and education for its members and ensuring that mental health is labeled a priority by the Sport Science Institute
she began to understand the power of her platform
and the potential to reach the greater campus population
Enna started Mental Health Ambassadors and the Bearcat Support Network at the University of Cincinnati
The latter is based on the framework established by the Wolverine Support Network

EXETER — Enna Grazier can now add the title of internationally acclaimed chocolate maker to her resume
Enna Chocolate at 152 Front Street won two awards from the 2023 Americas Bean-to-Bar and Craft Chocolatier Competition
Enna Chocolate was among the 30-plus finalists from more than 15 different countries
The competition celebrates the highest form of chocolate making for dark chocolate
but it's extra special to be recognized by people in the industry who are known for their chocolate palate,” said Grazier
“It's a really broad competition field – all of the Americas – so it’s very special to be singled out and have my work recognized from a lot of really talented chocolate makers.”
Grazier has been making chocolate from bean to bar for nearly a decade
She started making the bars in her kitchen, then a commercial space in Epping until she moved into her current space and cafe on Front Street
Grazier said the recent competition is part of the International Chocolate Awards
equivalent to the Emmys in the chocolate world
Similar contests were held in other regions such as Scandinavian
Italian/Mediterranean and the Asia-Pacific
Grazier submitted four bars for the Americas competition
Three bars made it to the Grand Jury Finalist
and two bars received the Silver Award – Chocorua Rye Barrel-Aged Dark Chocolate in the dark chocolate bars with infusion category and Bon’Bulak 100% Pure Dark Chocolate in the 85% dark chocolate and above category
The latter also received an Honorary Gold Award for being 100% dark chocolate
‘Who needs sugar?’ and submitted 100%,” said Grazier
Previous story: Exeter’s Enna Chocolate named one of the country’s best
Grazier said each of the four bars she submitted is unique
“… I think it’s helpful to be recognized on the international stage among other chocolate makers
It’s a very competitive field… making chocolate from bean to bar is a passion project for virtually everyone who does it.”
Here is a look at the winning chocolates:

and they often don’t have a lot of off notes,” she said
always with beans that are perfect from the start
but some beans just need to be paired with sugar to cut some of the acidity or the bitterness.”
the “cult-following” chocolate has a creamy texture to it
but it satisfies a certain kind of sweet tooth and desire for chocolate.”

Also made from the Hacienda Victoria cacao beans from Ecuador, the one detail that makes the Chocorua Rye Barrel-Aged Dark Chocolate different is the beans were aged in a whisky barrel for six months.
“There’s no alcohol remaining, it’s just the whiskey and oak flavor that comes into the bean,” she said. “Even now every time I taste it, I brace myself for alcohol, but it’s just a nice caramelly and honey and oak flavor.”
The two barrels from Tamworth Distillery each fit up to 200 pounds of cacao beans, making 1,600 to 2,000 chocolate bars.
The small hint of whiskey gives this chocolate bar an added unique sweetness, she said.
The fourth chocolate bar that didn’t place was Rock Hopper, an 80% dark chocolate made with goat milk. Much like any other goat products, Grazier said the chocolate bar “is not for everyone” and is an acquired taste.
2023 8:43 p.m.The Deschutes County District Attorney dropped criminal charges against a Bend police officer Wednesday
after prosecutors decided a police whistleblower was unfit to testify
Officer Kevin Uballez has been on paid leave since June 6
when two fellow officers reported concerns about his use of force during the arrest of an intoxicated man on the west side of Bend
Prosecutors sought misdemeanor charges in October 2022
Uballez pleaded not guilty to one count of fourth degree assault and one count of harassment
Neither Uballez nor his attorney responded to requests for comment
State records show Uballez joined the department in 2014
He has been paid $173,356 by the city while on leave
Bend Police spokesperson Sheila Miller said
FILE: A Bend Police cruiser in October 2020
Deschutes DA Steve Gunnels moved to have both charges against Uballez dismissed this week
“I determined there was not sufficient evidence to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt,” Gunnels said in a phone call
The tarnished reputation of a key witness was “a critical factor,” he said
The witness, Peter Enna, was one of the two fellow officers who reported Uballez to police supervisors. In the spring of 2022, Enna resigned from the department amid accusations he mishandled an unrelated arrest, as the Bulletin reported
the District Attorney’s office added Enna to the prosecutor’s “Brady list,” a registry of law enforcement officers who aren’t allowed to testify because of incidents involving dishonesty
but did not conclude what he saw was a crime
Gunnels laid out more reasons the criminal case fell apart: None of the officers who witnessed the incident were wearing body cameras; Hamlin was “in a drunken stupor,” without a clear memory of events; and prosecutors found he had already been “badly beaten” by a group of teenagers who left him in the middle of the road before Officer Uballez arrived at the scene
Hamlin filed a federal suit against the city of Bend and Uballez in June
Attorneys working on the case have until March 2024 to discover evidence
Editor’s note: This article has been updated to include Uballez’ salary while on leave
