Tyler Hobbs is a visual artist and generative artist from Austin
Hobbs’ art explores the interaction of computer hardware and software with the natural world
Tyler Hobbs had dabbled in traditional portrait
he lacked an intimate connection to traditional art genres
which made him fall out of love with traditional art
He went on to study computer science and graduated in 2010
around 2014 Hobbs discovered generative art and tried his hand at it
This moment of discovery came as he tried to find a connection with art and a way to combine his artistic and coding skills into something innovative
On The 21st Century Creative podcast
Tyler Hobbs said: “I started to stumble upon the generative art community and learn that it was already a thing
And I very quickly figured out that this was something that was going to work well for me
and I’ve been pursuing it since then.”
he had saved enough to become a full-time artist
he produced about 100 pieces a year and made ends meet through commissions and selling prints
Being a full-time artist was far from easy
As a result of loneliness and financial hardship
he founded the start-up Travel Boss in 2018
Unfortunately, the company closed due to the pandemic. However, this led Tyler Hobbs to discover Art Blocks – and it is safe to say that this chance discovery quickly changed the course of his future
After he was hand-picked by the platform as a curated artist
According to Tyler Hobbs: “Fidenza is my most versatile generative algorithm to date. Although it is not overly complex
the core structures of the algorithm are highly flexible
allowing for enough variety to produce continuously surprising results.”
Inspired by Abstract Expressionist artist Francis Klein and named after a small town in northern Italy
Fidenza captured the imagination of art collectors worldwide
They sold out in 25 minutes for 0.17 ETH each – resulting in about $400,000 in sales
the Fidenza NFTs were even more successful on the secondary market
Fidenza’s underlying technology is a flow field algorithm
This coding technique enabled Tyler Hobbs to produce organic curves that are also aesthetically pleasing
He also uses the “Collision Check: No Overlap” feature to ensure no overlap between the shapes
Fidenza also employs probabilistic colour palettes – a set of pre-selected colours that work well together
the technology underlying Fidenza is as interesting as the artworks themselves
my artwork is created entirely through programming
I don’t draw things by hand or use any sort of Photoshop or post-editing in any of my work,” said Hobbs on The 21st Century Creative podcast
Hobbs also pointed out that when creating generative art
the artist creates a program that results in the artwork
the artist works hand in hand with technology to express himself
To give collectors an understanding of the process
Tyler Hobbs provides a snapshot of the program with the artwork
This is mainly because Hobbs considers coding an essential part of the artwork
Although generative art has existed since the 1960s
artists like Tyler Hobbs are undoubtedly pushing the genre to new heights
educate people about generative art and show everyone how technology and art can indeed coexist

ShareTyler Hobbs on Generative Art and NFTs: ‘I see code becoming a standard tool for artists. It’s just way too powerful to ignore’The artist and software engineer discusses how he created one of the most sought-after NFT drops of 2021. Fidenza #724 is offered at Christie’s in London on 28 February 2023

Tyler Hobbs is a pioneer of the Generative Art movement, producing work using autonomous systems — specifically, computer algorithms.
In June 2021, employing the most complicated algorithm he had ever created, Hobbs made Fidenza, a series of 999 computer-generated images minted as individual NFTs that examine the point where the worlds of digital and analogue — and chaos and order — collide.
Fidenza quickly became one of the most sought-after NFT drops of 2021. One work alone rocketed in value from 0.58 ETH (then worth around $1,400) to 1,000 ETH (more than $3.3 million at the time) over the course of just two months. More importantly though, Hobbs secured his place as a leading figure of the digital art movement, as well as an artist able to survive the NFT market’s peaks and troughs relatively unscathed.
Tyler Hobbs (b. 1987), Fidenza #724, 2021. Minted on 11 June 2021, this work is unique and accompanied by a non-fungible token
Print: 49¾ x 41⅞ in (126.5 x 106.4 cm)
Sold for £365,400 on 28 February 2023 at Christie’s in London
On 28 February, Christie’s is offering the rare Generative artwork Fidenza #724 as part of the 20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale
Hobbs sat down to explain how the project came to life
and where he thinks the future of art and technology lies
Where did the idea for Fidenza come from
‘Many of the algorithmic and visual elements in Fidenza can be traced back through my work over the past five years
it was also a radically new experiment — designing an algorithm suitable for 999 outputs was a massive increase from my previous largest
‘The title Fidenza [the name of a town in northern Italy] was specifically chosen not to be significant. I wanted the viewer to interpret the work without preconceptions. I borrowed the strategy of using a town’s name from Franz Kline.’
What was involved in writing the algorithm for Fidenza
‘The algorithm itself is all hand-coded text and numbers
It’s written in a programming language called JavaScript
meaning it will be supported for at least several decades
art needs to span both’ — Tyler Hobbs‘It’s hard to mark the start of Fidenza because it evolved out of algorithms I’ve developed over the years
there was a period of roughly three-and-a-half months where I focused on it intensely
‘I began with an experimentation and exploration phase
where I changed different elements to introduce new concepts and behaviours
I focused on removing buggy areas and making weak outputs less likely
The last step was to adjust the probabilities in order to make the entire output varied and balanced
My goal was to ensure that you could look through all 999 outputs and not get bored.’
‘My goal was to ensure that you could look through all 999 outputs and not get bored’
Are the parallels to work by artists such as Piet Mondrian and Bridget Riley built into the code
and I often notice connections between their work and my own
even if I didn’t introduce them consciously.’
Can you explain how and why you sometimes make analogue counterparts to your digital works
‘There are many different ways to translate a digital work into the physical realm
and I decide which to use based on what suits the art best
Sometimes I use a projector to make hand-trace drawings
‘For Fidenza I created one painting on paper
I began by using a plotter — a simple
programmable robot holding a pencil — to create a drawing of it
It’s hard to get a robot to paint well: there’s a lot of “touch” that is still extremely difficult to get right
‘Seeing digital concepts in analogue form can make them more accessible and human
It also prompts us to consider that while we have physical bodies
‘There are several ways that I can curate a project’s output
I put the curation in the hands of the community
the 999 images were generated at random with no curation whatsoever.’
Can a computer ever compete with human creativity
‘I don’t think we have a good definition of “creativity” right now
Like every other form of artistic practice
the act of creation using artificial intelligence and other Generative approaches has particular strengths and capabilities
as well as particular weaknesses and limitations
a weekly newsletter delivering our top stories and art market insights to your inbox
‘It’s up to the artist and viewer to determine what’s meaningful and how we can best relate to these new technologies — which are certainly going to dominate our lives in the coming decades.’
What do you predict for the future of art and technology
‘I see code becoming more and more of a standard tool for artists
It’s just way too powerful to ignore
and those who can wield it effectively can do things others can’t
It also doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing; I think a mixed use of code and traditional practices will create the most interesting outcomes.’
Computer scientist turned generative artist Tyler Hobbs writes code artistically
which then creates visual art that has sold for millions
Fidenza #313 was minted for 0.17 ETH on June 11th
after which it was immediately sold for 0.58 ETH
the NFT nicknamed “Tulip” sold for 1,000 ETH on Opensea — $3.3 million at the time
Fidenza is the brainchild of Tyler Hobbs, 34, who quit his computer engineering job to work as a full time artist. He struck ETH when he discovered Art Blocks
an art platform that creates NFT’s based on generative art
The work is named after a town in northern Italy
Inspired by abstract expressionist painter Francis Klein
Hobbs likes to use the names of places for his art because they carry little baggage or definitive meaning
The approximate $400,000 in sales were split 90/10 between Hobbs and Art Blocks
his works come with a pre-programmed 10% commission
which is automatically shared 5.0%/2.5%/2.5% between himself
With an estimated 85 million in secondary sales
Hobbs has already earned over $4 million in commissions
he felt it important to create art using the tools he knew
making people ask “what separates man from machine?”
Hobbs says that buyers come from around the world and are most commonly middle aged men
These largely inexperienced art collectors who come from the crypto or technology world “have less of an inherent bias against this artwork,” whereas many traditionalists “feel that there’s something inherently less human or less real” about his style
“They’re generally both interested in the artwork
and they’re willing to risk a fairly large amount of money on something that’s unproven — I think it takes a special breed of person to be that kind of collector
September 16: Since this story was published
news broke of imitation Fidenza’s being traded on the Solana project Sol Blocks
Hobbs called the revelation “distasteful as hell”
The mechanics of a generative artwork drop on Art Blocks are unique
as the art does not exist until it is “minted” by the buyer
buyers pay the predetermined ETH-denominated price along with necessary gas fees
and receive the artwork upon its generation — which takes up to 30 seconds in the case of Fidenza
Aligned Incentives: Accelerating Passive Crypto Adoption
How to make a Metaverse: Secrets of the founders
the contribution of the minter is a unique
and necessary ingredient of the artistic equation

— Tyler Hobbs (@tylerxhobbs) June 24, 2021
Because the code for Fidenza is on the blockchain
anyone can use it to create similar pieces
because “Fidenza” is limited to 999 numbered copies
such “bootleg Fidenzas” would not be “signed” by the artist — much like if someone copied an artist’s style with the same materials and tools
While Hobbs considers it “interesting for people to be able to explore that algorithm” and appreciate the aesthetic value it can create
he makes it clear that his vision for Fidenza is now complete
“I think the 999 is sort of the perfect test run of the algorithm
and captures everything that I could have wanted it to capture,” he says
adding that he likes that there is “a clear start and a clear finish.”
“There’s a certain artistic challenge to creating an algorithm that will create something with a lot of beautiful variety within those 999
while still maintaining a consistent level of quality
He is unconcerned about fakes due to the unfalsifiable nature of blockchain provenance
but acknowledges that someone could sell them as unofficial Fidenzas
While he is unable to ascertain the legality of doing so
he finds the thought of others co-opting the program for profit as unethical and disrespectful
CryptoPunks
one of the first and most well known NFT sets
While the “floor” (cheapest listed NFT of the set) for one of the 10,000 original Punks sits around 100 ETH
a “Phunk” which faces the other way can be had for a mere 0.04 ETH
and “Bastard Gan Punks” for a respectable 0.50 ETH
it can be argued that these copies only affirm and increase the value of the “real” punks
and often spent time “drawing comic books by hand.” He wanted to go to art school
“but my dad talked me into studying computer science instead — for pragmatic reasons.” He completed his bachelor studies at the University of Texas at Austin
he found work as a computer engineer with database company DataStax
high performance database.” Hobbs was satisfied
seeing programming as “as good of a job as I could have hoped for,” staying at the company until 2017
Hobbs tried his hand at many styles of art including “traditional artwork,” as he referred to his oil paintings and figure drawings
These long-established artistic traditions however lacked an intimate connection to the artist himself — a 21st century computer scientist
The Bouldin Creek Mural was a precursor to Fidenza. Now I'm looking for the right fit to paint a colorful Fidenza-esque mural! pic.twitter.com/IIqg6BYABp
— Tyler Hobbs (@tylerxhobbs) June 21, 2021
Hobbes believes that to make exceptional art
it is important that the art relate to the artist and their unique skills because “that’s where you have the most interesting things to say.” This can be seen throughout history — from stone-age hunters who drew images of their game on the walls of their dwellings
whose figure drawings were based on his study of human anatomy
While searching for a personal connection to his art, Hobbs discovered the generative art genre: art created in a way by which an autonomous system “can independently determine features of an artwork that would otherwise require decisions made directly by the artist.” With programming close to his heart
“I started wondering if I could write a program that would create a painting
Hobbs began “using tools that were not designed for making artwork at all
but the results that I had were really interesting artistically,” he recalls
referring to his early experimentation with generative art
He found the results “much more interesting than the paintings that I’d been making,” inspiring him to continue developing his methods
Crazy outcomes when current laws applied to NFTs and the metaverse
Caitlyn Jenner memecoin ‘mastermind’s’ celebrity price list leaked
By 2017 he had grown enough confidence and savings to quit his job in order to focus full time on art
Making a living selling prints and commissions was hard
as it was far less than he earned as an engineer
Suffering from financial pressures and loneliness
in 2018 he joined some of his former colleagues in founding Travel Boss
a startup focused on business travel where he worked part time to leave room for art
The company shut down early this year due to the pandemic
because it was around this time in February 2021 that he discovered Artblocks
Though he had been “generally aware” of blockchain technology before
he admits that he had never been interested in working in the industry nor investing in cryptocurrencies
“I was fairly sceptical of NFT’s in general
because of how great of a fit it is for generative art specifically
Hobbs considered Art Blocks “a huge breakthrough” for Generative Art
which he says has been struggling since its inception in the 1960’s
With an audience willing to play a direct role in the creation of their purchased generative art
The curated stream is the most prestigious
with artists selected by the platform’s curation board after a lengthy vetting process
and I have a relatively well proven track record of making good work and had a good network,” he said with well-placed confidence
The initial income from minting was life changing for Hobbs
because it “meant the security that I could continue to work full time on artwork” for several years
he maintains a substantial position which he suspects will rise in value
Much of his time is currently spent connecting with collectors
who naturally want to form relationships with the artist whose million-dollar works they own
Behind him is a stack of rolled Fidenza prints
which he is in the process of shipping out
“I allow the owners to order prints and it’s limited to one print,” he clarifies
explaining that he charges only reasonable printing costs of up to $600 — a pittance considering the floor rests around $800,000
Twitter has been moving very fast for me (all of us?) these days. Thank you for your patience while I work to get back to everyone. Soon(ish) I'll start posting regularly again ;). In the meantime, check out my most recent essay: https://t.co/ezz2r9IjuU
— Tyler Hobbs (@tylerxhobbs) September 6, 2021
Though Hobbs will certainly be continuing his daily artistic practice
He intends to flip his process of releasing early sketches as he works
instead starting with the finished product and only later showing partial works
“I’m 100% focused on releasing quality work,” he says
he hopes to artistically outdo himself once more

When asked if that meant they were friends
"I feel lucky to have that title," he joked in a recent interview with Insider
He then clarified: "There's been some interaction on Twitter
but I would not call myself Snoop Dogg's friend."
If Snoop's not a friend, he's at least an admirer of Hobbs and his work. After all, in October the rapper bought a portion of Hobbs' "Fidenza #938" — valued at 2,500 ETH
or about $9 million at the time of purchase
The 34-year-old Hobbs is the mastermind behind Fidenza
a 999-piece NFT collection of generative artwork that's ubiquitously hailed as one of the hallmarks of success in the space and has brought its creator to the forefront of the digital-art world
a collective platform that generates artwork using ethereum smart contracts
"Art Blocks was the turning point for me because there was sort of a perfect marriage for the type of artwork that I was doing," Hobbs said
"I could tell that there was starting to be a lot of excitement in this art form and a lot of social consensus about NFTs and why they carry value
so some of the cultural dynamics around that started to make a lot more sense to me."
In June, Hobbs fully entered the NFT scene with the launch of his inaugural project, Fidenza
Based on market conditions back then, he settled on a "fair" mint price of 0.17 ETH, or about $400 at the time. In the project's primary sale, all 999 Fidenza pieces were bought in 28 minutes
To date, Fidenza has brought in 40,423 ETH in secondary sales alone
or about $177 million based on ether's trading price on Wednesday
transaction records on the OpenSea marketplace showed
Multiple pieces have sold for over a million dollars, with the most expensive work, "Fidenza #313," selling for 1,000 ETH in August — over $3.3 million at the time
the floor price for a Fidenza is just over $350,000
and Hobbs estimated the average selling price these days to be about half a million dollars
With a 5% royalty rate going to the artist
Hobbs has earned about $9 million in secondary commissions so far
As a generative artist, Hobbs employs algorithms to create his masterpieces
Hobbs said he spent the bulk of his time "fine-tuning" the algorithm — creating interesting varieties and ensuring a minimum level of quality
The algorithm for Fidenza took him months to develop
Hobbs used Art Blocks to upload his generative-art script onto the blockchain itself
Once participating collectors paid the fee
minting a new NFT that was delivered directly to the buyer
Part of the appeal may be the mystery of the algorithm's output
There's also a personal element to each piece: To guarantee complete randomness
the algorithm uses the randomly generated hash of each buyer's transaction number as the program's input
"I think that certain collectors do establish more of a bond with the artwork if they get it through that minting process," Hobbs said
"They feel like they've helped to create it in some ways
Certain Fidenza pieces are also considered more valuable than their peers because of the rarity of their traits.
I sort of evaluated how many editions would this be interesting for before it started to get repetitive and boring," Hobbs said
"There are a lot of traits that I thought would be interesting to see for 10 mints or 20 mints
Pricing artwork "fairly or accurately" is always difficult, Hobbs said, so many artists and platforms use Dutch auctions nowadays
which "help to add in an element of price discovery."
As for why his Fidenzas have skyrocketed in popularity
is the artwork itself — not only the aesthetics of the collection but also its avant-garde status
"I think my work appeals to people because it tends to sit at a transitional point in between more traditional art forms and media painting and this digital world," Hobbs explained
"I think folks also recognize that this is a branch of artwork and art collecting that is entirely new and will likely have a very bright future
A lot of them probably correctly realize that some of the earliest works in this field will be sought after."
Hobbs also believed that the candidness of the secondary market played a big role in the more technical valuation of works like his
and you can see exactly who owns every piece of work
"I think all that transparency and openness is actually really healthy."
The popularity of NFTs has attracted the attention of critics, including Mike Novogratz
who said that valuations might not be justified at their current mind-bending levels
even if the NFTs themselves had staying power as an art form
Hobbs said he understood the criticism since he
"NFTs make you think a lot about ownership and what ownership means
"What I realized after being in the space for a while is that essentially as long as society or your particular peer group recognizes a value in owning something
"art is not necessarily a sane investment strategy."
which traditionally is very unusual for work that's selling at these types of prices," he said
they eradicate the problem of establishing provenance
which Hobbs called "very central to art collecting." They also create a lineage of ownership
allowing artists to perpetually earn royalties on all secondary sales
Hobbs believed that NFTs had helped "level the playing field" for artists everywhere
But it then becomes the artist's responsibility to build out a network
"I think being an artist in this environment is a much more social and cultural role," he said
"There's a lot of energy that has to be invested into building that community around your work and finding out who those people are and getting to know them."
Hobbs advised potential creators to focus on this facet for long-term success because of how community-based the NFT world is
He's in New York City hosting the collection's in-person
live-minting show at the Bright Moments Gallery
This time Hobbs used a Dutch auction to sell 50 pieces in the collection, with Decrypt reporting that all 50 were sold for a total of 1,800 ETH
or about $140,000 a piece at the time of sale in October
Hobbs now estimated the resale value for each piece on the secondary market to be somewhere around 120 ETH
or over half a million dollars at the time of writing

Artist Tyler Hobbs‘ Fidenza line consists of 999 unique Art Blocks depicting a pattern of colorful squares and rectangles which are generated via an algorithm
The series’ Fidenza #313 recently sold for 1,000 ETH
which amounted to just over $3.3 million USD at the time of transaction
The artwork was sold to the previous buyer for just 0.58 ETH (around $1,400 USD) on June 11
marking a truly mindboggling return within the span of two months
has seen a sudden rise in popularity over the past few days
with one wallet snapping up eight Fidenzas for close to $1 million
A series of back-to-back purchases were flagged by Fidenza Bot, an automated Twitter bot that scans OpenSea for Fidenza sales
there were three transactions within 12 minutes
totaling 280.50 ETH (approximately $356,294) with an average price of 93.50 ETH (approximately $118,765)
for 1.2 wrapped ether (WETH) (approximately $3,098) and Fidenza #18 sold on July 15
The transactions bumped the project's market cap to 90,609.30 ETH (about $121 million) and helped raise its floor price to 94 ETH (approximately $116,154)
three more NFTs were purchased by the same wallet within 17 minutes on Thursday morning
each selling for at least 98 ETH (approximately $125,244)
Another NFT – Fidenza #136 – was transferred to wallet 808450 on Friday afternoon
leaving the well-to-do investor with eight Fidenza NFTs totaling 689.95 ETH (approximately $910,271)
Separately, wallet 0x9B67e bought Fidenza #4 for 94 ETH ($124,268) on Thursday
contributing to a 781.25 ETH (approximately $1.03 million) pump into the project over a 48-hour period
what led to the sudden surge of interest in the algorithmic-based art project
though Twitter user Jollytime.eth speculated in a series of tweets that the NFTS may have been purchased by an investment firm linked to Leslie Alexander
a successful bond trader and the former owner of the Houston Rockets
At the time of writing, the project's total volume is 51.5K ETH, or approximately $68.2 million. Notably, Art blocks, the Ethereum-based NFT creation platform behind Fidenza, now ranks above other popular NFT collections including Doodles and CryptoPunks in terms of sales volume, according to Crypto Slam
In August 2021, Fidenza #13 sold for 1,000 ETH, or about $3.3 million – the highest Art Blocks sale to date.

The QQL Dutch auction closed in less than an hour
raising around $16.75 million.
at least if today’s QQL drop from Tyler Hobbs and Dandelion Wist is anything to go by.
Fidenza creator Hobbs and Dandelion Wist released their highly anticipated generative art experiment via an Archipelago Dutch auction earlier this evening
putting 900 mint passes for the 999-piece collection on sale at an initial asking price of 50 ETH
The auction implemented a rebate mechanism
meaning buyers all paid the same price once it settled
banking the pair a total of 12,600 ETH worth roughly $16.75 million at press time.
QQL’s website describes the collection as a collaborative work “that celebrates emergence, unpredictability, and happenstance over forced rarity.” Unlike most other generative art collections, it invites the owner of the work to become a creator of the project. The QQL website lets anyone create their own outputs using the project’s complex algorithm
Those who minted a pass today can create infinite outputs until they settle on a piece they like
meaning someone could theoretically mint a QQL NFT 100 years from now
QQL also introduces a 2% royalty fee on secondary sales for mint pass owners.
The pair also ran a competition to give would-be collectors a chance to win their own mint pass
asking entrants to tweet a photo of their best render
and ARTXCODE founder Sofia Garcia were invited to pick out nine winners from the 11,000 entries.
— Tyler Hobbs (@tylerxhobbs) September 27, 2022
Mint pass holders can create their own NFT using the algorithm from September 30
it’s unclear whether the mint passes or the outputs themselves will command a higher value
the collection’s passes have hit a floor price of 17 ETH on OpenSea.
Hobbs became one of the NFT space’s biggest stars during a boom in the market in 2021 when he released Fidenza on Art Blocks
Fidenza NFTs minted at around $400 and topped a floor price of $500,000 weeks later
Though the floor price has since fallen to 96 ETH
worth around $128,000 amid a slump in the NFT and crypto market
Fidenza is still one of the world’s most sought-after generative art collections
Dandelion Wist entered the NFT space as generative art collections like Fidenza exploded in popularity; they’re renowned for their collection of canonical works that dropped during the 2021 frenzy.
While it’s not clear if QQL will be quite as popular as Fidenza
with today’s drop raising millions in the depths of a bear market
it’s probably fair to say that at least a few hundred generative art collectors are big fans of the work.
the author of this piece owned a QQL mint pass
and several other fungible and non-fungible cryptocurrencies.

Tyler Hobbs sold the entirety of his latest collection of abstract art—comprising 999 works—before anyone had actually seen it
Not even he knew exactly what the images of geometric shapes and flowing curves were going to look like
Yet eager buyers snapped up piece after piece last month as soon as they appeared online
Hobbs, who lives in Austin, is what’s known as a generative artist. He writes computer code that sets out criteria for the generation of a host of unique pieces of digital art. Hobbs might
alter his code to reduce the presence of the color red
“Because red doesn’t work well with the big shapes,” he says
“So I’ll make it only use blue in cases like that.” He spent months tweaking the Fidenza code
Usually he makes money from his art by selling one-of-a-kind physical copies of the images that the code autonomously produces
he made use of a website called Art Blocks
It’s a process known as “minting.”
Calderon’s plans for Art Blocks were initially modest
He simply wanted to build a site on which computer-generated art could be sold using blockchain technology
Yet the eye-popping prices the artworks have fetched
and the notion of disrupting the traditional art world have turned Art Blocks from a pandemic-boredom side project into a rapidly growing business aiming to make this kind of digital art more readily accessible in the physical world too
Blockchain started out as yet another rabbit hole for Calderon
He grew up around computers and was often throwing himself into some new obsession—video games
it was 3-D printing or how to make art with projection mapping
Calderon had been reading about blockchain for several years before he began investing in bitcoin
Best known for its association with cryptocurrencies
blockchain is like a giant digital ledger of transactions stored across a decentralized computer network
Calderon’s experience in coding led him to get interested in Ethereum
as well as in the concept of “smart contracts”—conditions embedded into the blockchain record that secures a given transaction and establishes a chain of ownership
but smart contracts made money smart and made transactions more transparent
I want to be a part of this somehow,’” Calderon says
His first experiment in smart contracts was a gift for a friend’s newborn
and tied them to a contract that would unlock the funds on the child’s eighteenth birthday
That same amount of ether is now worth nearly $22,000
but there’s no way to cash it out until the contract unlocks years from now
“That’s the crappy part,” Calderon admits
“Now I wish I could allow a way to recover it
put it into a college fund or something.” It’s possible
that ether could be worth nothing by the time the contract expires
While those assets—the actual digital images—can still easily be replicated and disseminated
Erick began to discuss with his brother Daniel Calderon
the idea of using the blockchain to make fine art more accessible
they thought about attaching QR codes to real-world sculptures that would send people to a virtual gallery where they could purchase unique configurations of digitally rendered versions of the same sculpture
the Calderons’ idea evolved into a platform where collectors could buy a generative artwork that’s never been seen before and is created on the spot
The notion contained an element that appealed to both brothers: surprise
like finding a hologram edition in a package of baseball trading cards
or buying a blind-box toy from a vending machine and not knowing exactly what you were going to get
Erick worked on programming what was now called Art Blocks, at artblocks.io, making a project called Chromie Squiggle the guinea pig for the site. The Squiggles, which launched last November
are sold under Erick’s online handle
Snowfro (which ties back to a snow cone stand he used to own)
Two hundred of them sold in the first few hours
and more than nine thousand versions of the Slinky-like colorful doodle have been minted so far
Among the Art Blocks buyers is Bradley Kreider
a former chef and yoga instructor who lives in Mexico
He discovered Calderon’s site via a cryptocurrency online discussion group
and it took a while to wrap his brain around the concept
Ultimately he was intrigued by buying a piece of art without knowing precisely what it would look like
“You can’t see what you’re going to get
but you can see of examples of what you might get,” Kreider says
“It’s like a childhood kind of excitement.”
In March, he purchased a work from artist Dmitri Cherniak’s Ringers collection for 27 ETH
and yellow dots in a configuration that looks something like the head of a giraffe
Art Blocks has so far hosted sales of collections from generative artists including Cherniak, Hobbs, Hideki Tsukamoto, and Stina Jones. They’re not household names, even in the traditional art world, but they have significant followings in the generative art space, which has existed since at least the sixties
when most art coders were scientists and engineers with access to early computers
One unexpected byproduct of the success of Art Blocks is that a significant resale market has emerged
Pieces that originally sold for anywhere from $30 to a few hundred dollars are going for tens of thousands on the site OpenSea
And the artists themselves are benefiting because one smart-contract feature that Calderon built into Art Blocks transactions grants the artist 5 percent of the sales price each time a work is resold
This feature also helps the artists track where their work ends up and which pieces become most valuable
Granted, the value of the artworks, in terms of dollars, can greatly fluctuate because of cryptocurrency’s instability. One ether was worth more than $4,000 a few months ago
but recently the price has been between $2,100 and $2,300
No one knows if it will return to its previous highs
As Calderon has begun to take on investors and hire employees to help him screen work and program the website
he’s been considering expanding the platform into areas such as virtual video game objects
and creating a way for Art Blocks to be the software behind other blockchain gallery sites
Are the collectors snapping up Art Blocks collections true art lovers
or are they primarily NFT speculators hoping to make a buck
they saw a piece of art and connected with it as art
They’re seeing things that make them feel,” he says
Another of those buyers, recent New York University business graduate Tyler Kraus
says that’s certainly been the case for him
“I never had the money to buy nice art for my walls or anything,” he says
The Ringers piece he bought has become a precious commodity
both in terms of ETH and in Kraus’s heart
anyone could find the digital file online and print it out themselves to display
but the blockchain says Kraus is its true owner (for now)
even if I could double my investment.”
Kraus is also weighing whether the artworks he purchases—sixteen pieces to date—will appreciate more than ether itself
but I’m such a bull on ether now that holding the art might mean missing out on the opportunity
Whether they’ll keep up one-for-one is something I’m balancing when buying,” he says
The money is a large part of why Art Blocks is drawing attention in the art world and in the blockchain arena
but Calderon says his biggest goal remains helping generative artists increase the reach of their work
For decades their output has been underappreciated in the traditional art world
and their talents for creativity through coding misunderstood
“There’s genius to playing a violin or playing a musical instrument,” Calderon says
Correction: The total number of art drops that Art Blocks has hosted was misstated in a previous version of this story and has been amended
the creator of the popular Art Blocks collection Fidenza
has described Solana-based NFT project SolBlocks as “distasteful as hell” for using his art-generating code without authorization
The artist behind Fidenza has called out a Solana-based NFT project for copying his work
a new trend of copycat projects seems to be emerging
The latest in a series of rip-off projects is SolBlocks
which announced its plan to launch its own unique collection of algorithmically-generated NFT artworks based on Fidenza creator Tyler Hobbs’ codebase Tuesday
The main theme behind SolBlocks is to make the most iconic & attractive generative-art algorithms available on a wider scale
— SolBlocks (@Sol_blocks) September 14, 2021
While SolBlocks claims that all artworks will be completely new and unique
the issue centers on their use of Tyler Hobbs’ name
and his art-generating code to create the artworks without authorization
many consider SolBlocks’ move as intellectual property theft because the code used to generate the art arguably represents “the art” as much as the generated artwork itself.
Responding to SolBlocks’ announcement on Twitter
the visual artist asked SolBlocks not to proceed
arguing that the project is “distasteful as hell” and represents “unauthorized commercial usage” of his programs.
are among the most valuable NFTs on the market; individual pieces can sell for the equivalent of millions of dollars in ETH.
Without pointing fingers at any specific project
Art Blocks referred to the practice as “intellectual property theft” in a Wednesday tweet storm
adding that artists whose work had been stolen “feel violated.”
PSA: Just because this space is pseudo-anon and decentralized does not mean copyright rules do not apply
Intellectual property theft is real and applies to platforms that generate unauthorized works as well as individuals that participate in the trade of counterfeit goods
— Art Blocks (@artblocks_io) September 15, 2021
While derivative projects may attempt to gain fame and financial benefit by leveraging an original project’s reputation
As NFTs are unique units of digital data stored on public blockchains
they are not inherently interchangeable with other digital assets
meaning the authenticity of original artworks is verifiable and impossible to forge
Pirating rears its head in the NFT world as SolBlocks looks to replicate (literally) the success of Fidenza
Image includes combined content which may include AI-generated content
SolBlocks have announced the launch of a new collection of NFTs called SolBlocks Series I (Fidenza)
The team added that they will be using the same algorithm script employed by the original Fidenza artist
“The main theme behind SolBlocks is to make the most iconic & attractive generative-art algorithms available on a wider scale.“
SolBlocks maintains that pieces within this collection will not be copies of Hobbs’s Fidenza artwork
But given the high level of copycatting within the crypto industry
Fidenza NFTs shot to prominence recently due to the spiraling asking prices they now command
Last month, Fidenza #313 sold for 1,000 ETH
The seller had bought the piece for 0.58 ETH ($1,100) two months before
Fidenza #531 is the current most expensive piece within the collection
it has an asking price of 3,500 ETH ($12.6 million)
The owner purchased it for 3.8 ETH on June 8
The Fidenza collection first launched in June 2021 and consists of 999 different NFT artworks
Each piece is created using an algorithmic technique to form unique patterns of colored rectangles and squares that comprise the design
The random generation of the artwork adds an element of mystique
which in turn gives each piece a distinct appeal
Hobbs
He specializes in fusing computers with art by way of developing custom algorithms that generate artwork
“Fidenza is by far my most versatile algorithm to date
Although the program stays focused on structured curves and blocks
and color usage it can employ create a wide array of generative possibilities.”
Hoping to catch a slice of this popularity
up-and-coming project SolBlocks said they are introducing their own version of Fidenza
Despite claiming that each piece will be new and unique
there is still the peculiarity of using the word Fidenza in naming their collection
SolBlocks admitted that it will also be “utilizing Hobbs’ Fidenza script-library
they are using the same program that generated the original Fidenzas in the first place
He called this distasteful and asked SolBlocks to stop
“Not only is this distasteful as hell
it’s also unauthorized commercial usage of my program
it’s not known for certain whether Hobbs has IP protection on the script
of calling themselves “honest pirates,” the script is likely open-source
everyone has said it–new hashes = new outputs
We're not saying we're not pirates of Hobbs' code
We've officially decided to share a portion of all proceeds with artists who's code we utilize

The Francigena Fidenza Festival 2024 has closed the curtain after four vibrant days with great participation of the general public. It was a long “cultural bridge” connecting northern Europe with the Mediterranean via the city of Fidenza, which is located exactly halfway along the route (3,200 km long) and has been home to the headquarters of the European Association of the Via Francigena ways (EAVF) since 2001
and many hikes to discover the European cultural route of the Via Francigena

and schools with a view to dialogue and cooperation
Nolan was received by Fidenza Mayor Andrea Massari and Councillor Maria Pia Bariggi

A special moment of discussion took place with the EAVF
in the presence of President Massimo Tedeschi
in collaboration with the University of Parma
The Festival has reached its fourth edition and has now become not only a reference appointment, but also a good practice to be made known throughoutthe European network of Via Francigena ways

In addition to the results of the individual competitions, Kioshi was also at the start of the kata team competitions with two male and two female teams. The male team swept the competition, winning the Italian title, a result accompanied by second place in the kumite sector, a double of great importance that in the overall ranking of the two-day ducal event was worth the fifth place out of 127 teams at the start, coming from all over Italy.
The results obtained in Fidenza confirm the great work carried out in recent years by the Vignola company, which has grown in the karate sector in terms of number of athletes and results.

This is Fidenza number 938 titled “God Mode” because “sometimes
Certain outputs are so sublime and unexpected
no such likeness exists”,the tweet explains
As is also stated in the thread following the first post, the previous price of this NFT work was 100 Ethereum
and it entered the history books years ago for this very reason
for being the first non-fungible token to be sold for a 3-digit value
“938 is in the history books for another reason
it was the first ever AB triple digit sale
but it was then an unprecedented price”
The other peculiarity of this NFT is that the spirals depicted in the work rotate anti-clockwise
this would be an illusion created by the intersections between the different shapes
In addition to Beeple’s famous $69 million sale of “Everydays: the first 5000 days”
which set the standard for the entire NFT industry
the list of history’s best-selling crypto art and collectibles is filled with new records every day
When it comes to collectibles, the CryptoPunks set several records
The sale of the source code of the World Wide Web was also a major event, selling for $5.43 million, as was the sale of the first tweet in history written by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, which sold for $3 million

algorithm-assisted art that harnesses code as a creative medium
We speak to the American artist ahead of two physical exhibitions in New York and London
Tyler Hobbs is arguably the poster boy of generative art and the most eloquent champion of code as a creative medium
A former software engineer with a side passion for (figurative) drawing and painting
algorithm-assisted art a decade ago and began writing relatively simple programs that could create multiple variants on a theme
tweaking and repeatedly re-running these programs
Hobbs has developed a uniquely ‘painterly’ digital aesthetic rooted in non-digital 'system' art and Abstract Expressionism
Hobbs is perhaps best known for the 2021 Fidenza series of 999 NFTs generated by a single algorithm
has managed to do what few NFT-producing generative artists have: separate artistic speculation from crypto speculation
He has emerged from the rubble of the crypto collapse with a reputation undimmed and demand for his work as feverish as ever
And as attention shifts away from collectible cartoons and toward generative art of genuine value
the space has opened up for the form’s first credible
Hobbs has long been creating physical versions of his digital work
More recently he has been arming the plotter with a paintbrush (though he admits it’s been a tricky process to get right).
pulls together paintings and drawings created over the last three years and
is his take on the way digital or system approaches and physical processes overlap and blur
‘It is largely an exploration of how digital art can become more human
and physical art more systematic,’ he says
‘It’s a mixture of works created by hand
created by machine or created by a combination of the two
“How can you work with the computer and the machine and in a more human way
take a more mechanical approach to work procedurally?” There is a lot of fertile ground there.’
commissioned by the gallery’s Web3 wing Pace Verso
is based around a new series of work produced as part of the QQL project
co-founder of the generative art marketplace Archipelago
QQL comprises a generative algorithm and a website
with visitors free to try it out and even tweak variables
the results are far more successful when QQL is left to Hobbs’ original devices)
can actually save and mint an image as an NFT
The pair released 900 QQL minting passes in September 2022
A month later they were worth $28m on the secondary market (weeks after the passes had been sold
most collectors had not actually minted a work; either spending long hours playing with the algorithm to see what they could come up with
hoping it will eventually pop out what generative art enthusiasts call a ‘grail’ piece
or just waiting to see what other collectors released)
Hobbs and Wist kept 99 passes for themselves
and the Pace show features 12 of Hobbs' paintings based on his QQL ‘outputs’
escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox
The two shows seem perfectly timed. Just as ChatGPT and the AI image generator Dall-E 2 threaten mass extinction of the creative professions
Hobbs (even though his programs are AI-free) is arguing the case for digital tools in human hands
for the curatorial and creative instinct and the power of the physical experience.
He is clear-sighted about the possibilities and limits of digital creativity. The appeal of generative algorithms
is the ability to create to almost infinite variety
the algorithm delivering thousands of different outcomes
or sometimes carefully curated and limited
and that the digital work will always pale beside the physical
‘I’m able to work at a massive scale with millions of lines or dots or elements
So there are these incredible strengths that the computer offers that are completely off-limits to a physical approach
But the digital lacks that special quality that physical art has
Hobbs’ work has never been about digital sheen and inhuman perfection
There can be no art without happy accidents
intriguing deviations – the odd and unexpected
He always allows space for glitches or even builds in errors in his code
digital misfires are matched by the inevitable faltering of the human hand
A key attraction of the physical exhibition
is the ability to really get up close and personal with the art and its imperfections
‘The physical work has infinite resolution so you can really get closer to those errors and flaws and deviations.’
to fix scale and exercise quality control over the viewing experience
there’s a high chance of somebody looking at it on a little phone screen or a monitor where the colours are way off.’ At the new shows
and the small wobble in a line that won’t disappear with the click of a mouse.
Hobbs has always argued that generative art is not a clean and disruptive break with earlier artistic traditions or day-to-day creative practice
is building an intuitive rule set they follow
That's what gives them a sort of stylistic consistency and they're able to explore all the possible variation within that
I'm doing the same thing but it has to be much more explicit and concrete because I'm working with code as the medium.’
But as much as he denies digital exceptionalism
and loves the physicality of painting and drawing
‘There are so many possibilities with code that just to describe it as a medium is understating the power and importance of it.’
steel and concrete were the defining materials of the 20th century
then code is the defining world-building material of the 21st century
should get better acquainted with what code
‘I think it's important artistically to take a closer look at the medium and start to play with it more and to understand it from that perspective
And to develop a healthy relationship to those materials.’
He's certainly pushing for a healthier and friendlier relationship with digital tools in the art world
‘Computer-based artwork has been panned and widely derided for almost six decades now
And that's an unbelievably long time for the most useful tool that's ever been invented.’ (Hobbs is also a fine and accessible writer and his website includes a number of essays
that argue the case for digital and generative art
Much of the ignorance and cynicism around Hobbs’ brand of digital art has been based on its entanglement with NFTs and cryptocurrency
But Hobbs insists that recent waves of crypto scandals are ultimately all for the good
'That kind of volatility and mania is obviously unsustainable
That's not good for building a long-term foundation for things.'
that NFTs and the blockchain are central to the future of art creation and collection
‘The blockchain is the way that digital art will be collected
But the people who were in this just for the money or for questionable reasons are being shaken off and now we need to slow down and reflect and start to focus on building a healthy culture
healthy norms and better tools to protect and inform people.’
Hobbs sees no need for more traditional artist representation
He has said that the success of the Fidenza series means that he and his five-strong team could keep working for decades without having to sell another piece
the US’ new tech-meets-creative hot spot (a central Texas native
And working digitally means he can stay exactly where he is
He is in a good place but remains driven by almost evangelical zeal
Hobbs could be the generative artist who finally breaks through
who finally gets the art world to accept the potential of digital tools
he might be the model for how all creatives understand and leverage the arrival of artificial ‘creative’ intelligence
‘You need to approach it from a place of curiosity,’ he argues
‘consider how you can use these tools to unlock new and better forms of expression
how you can use them to improve your work or create an entirely new type of work that doesn't exist yet
they're going to drastically change how all of these things are done
so you have to find ways to embrace them.’

After one week of flat lands and rice fields
Road to Rome has returned back to a hilly landscape
This morning we left the city of Fidenza behind us
and accompanied by a big group of friends from Atletica Casone Noceto
we started our journey at 6 in the morning to escape the 38°C burning sun that once again today would be our challenging travel companion
It was truly refreshing to the eyes as well as the mind to finally see some different landscapes around us again
As you may have understood by now from my previous blog posts
I am a huge mountain lover (possibly because I am Dutch
a country that’s almost entirely flat) so for me being in the hills again is an enormous boost for my motivation and mental well-being
where an amazing welcome was planned for us: a short re-enactment with medieval costumes
and to our surprise: an overwhelming buffet with homemade cakes and fresh fruit
The local community had truly gone above and beyond for our arrival
which was particularly remarkable because today was the 15th of August
This day in Italy is also known as “Ferragosto”
a national holiday during which most places and services are closed
The name of this holiday comes from Feriae Augusti
a feast day created by Roman Emperor Augustus as a moment of rest and celebrations after hard weeks of agricultural labour
The massive interest for our arrival by the locals of Costamezzana was therefore quite surprising to us
because most people usually go to the beach or into the mountains to relax
have a refreshing swim and eat some grilled meat from the bbq
The short break at Costamezzana generated enough energy for us to continue our journey towards Medesano where we were welcomed with open arms by the mayor who joined us for lunch
Some stretches of today’s stage almost looked as if we were in Tuscany
Upon arrival in Fornovo di Taro we inaugurated a new Via Francigena pilgrim bench together with the mayor and other municipal representatives
and their enthusiasm about the Road to Rome event and desire to improve services for pilgrims in their town was truly heartwarming
Today was our last day in the plains so far
Tomorrow we will start our ascent to the Cisa Pass in the Appennini mountains
after which we will reach Tuscany and its amazing rolling hills

👣 22 km on foot – Saturday 14 August
We were joined today by our friends from Fiorenzuola in Movimento
who are the “trail angels” for this part of the route
This means they take care of general maintenance and signposting among other things
and indeed they were equipped with Via Francigena stickers to be placed in areas where old stickers had disappeared as a result of the elements or where it simply wasn’t 100% clear which way to go
These local “trail angel” associations are the cornerstone of the Via Francigena
They dedicate their free time voluntarily to the enhancement and maintenance of the itinerary
and it has been a true pleasure walking with several of their representatives
Along the way today some moments of refreshment were planned
A short stop at the Abbey of Chiaravalle della Colomba brought some solace from the heat
thanks to the municipality of Alseno who had arranged some fresh water and fruit for us
Just before Castione Marchese we were welcomed with open arms by Massimo
a local citizen and Via Francigena enthusiast who lives right along the itinerary and who often offers pilgrims some fresh water
and in our case even some focaccia with an aperitif (at 10:30 in the morning
After this second stop it was rather hard to start walking again
a 45-year-old lady who suffers from cystic fibrosis just like our pilgrim friend Alessio who we met in France and Switzerland
Valeria had both of her lungs removed and transplanted only 4 years ago
An amazing story of strength and willpower that we keep on encountering along the road
Upon arrival in Fidenza we were met by the city councilor and a film crew from the regional news channel
After some interviews and a refreshing shower we had a great dinner among friends
after which we each went to sleep in preparation for yet another day in the Italian summer sun tomorrow
Today was also the day we said goodbye to our videomaker Giulia
who has been with us for two weeks since departure from the Great St
– Finishing today’s stage despite the burning heat
– Warm welcome by Massimo in Castione Marchesi

What is the most recent NFT craze to captivate the metaverse’s attention?
Art Blocks is a market for collectible abstract
the platform’s artists have created over 100,000 unique works through a process known as generative art
Sales have totaled around $570 million in the last month alone
Art Blocks’ original purchasers have no idea what their pieces will look like
Artists on the platform create algorithms that define specific aspects of their work; the final image is generated by the script when each NFT is minted on the Ethereum blockchain (resulting in different visuals each time).
Art Blocks range from simple squiggles to complex geometric works in the style of Sol LeWitt
Artists frequently create hundreds of variations of each style
Tyler Hobbs used an algorithm called Fidenza to create a series of intricate generative artworks
Works from the Fidenza collection (of which there are 999 in total) are now fetching high prices.
Digg founder Kevin Roose sold Fidenza #313 for 1,000 ETH ($3.3 million) last week after paying only .58 ETH (approximately $1,400) for it earlier this summer
The lowest-priced Fidenza piece currently available on OpenSea is 294 ETH (approximately $962,000)
Here are two Fidenza’s I own.The green one I bought for $125,000 USD on August 1st The pink one I bought for $135,000 USD on August 16th The ‘cheapest’ Fidenza right now is currently priced at $796,000 USDHonestly I’ve pretty much lost interest in trading altogether… pic.twitter.com/JM3ts4r0mH

whether the current price levels are sustainable remains to be seen
