The Ministry of Culture has awarded the Municipality of Loano a grant of 58,181.76 euros for organizing the CarnevaLöa festival
thanks to the Single Fund for Performing Arts
aimed at preserving Italy’s historic carnivals
The funding evaluation considered various factors
including the “historical ranking” of the events
securing the ninth position and one of the most substantial contributions
the Municipality of Loano has received this type of funding
Loano is the only Ligurian municipality on the list
Mayor Luca Lettieri and the assessore for tourism and culture
stated: “The CarnevaLöa attracts thousands of visitors annually
making it one of the signature events of our city.” They emphasize that it is not only a tourist attraction but also holds “significant folkloric value,” with origins tracing back to the Renaissance period in Loano
The first festival dates to the late 16th century
The municipal administration expresses gratitude to Vecchia Loano and the municipal offices for their efforts
it has been verified that the first Carnival in Loano dates back to the late 1500s and Giovanni Andrea Doria
with the pre-Lenten desire for fun and satirical spirit expressed through a beloved masked parade
much enjoyed by Prince Giovanni Andrea Doria
It is also clearly documented from the 17th century
the hiring of two or three musicians to accompany the period’s entertainments and play for public dances
The current “format” of the Loano Carnival boasts over 100 years of history
with various associations having carried on this tradition over time: Unione Sportiva Loanese
and the Azienda Autonoma di Turismo e Soggiorno
the association Vecchia Loano has taken the lead
the Loano Carnival has been recognized by the Region as the “largest carnival in Liguria” in terms of the number of floats
It features a character from Italian commedia dell’arte
a jovial character from the early 1900s and the official mask
form a carnival trio now famous throughout Italy
CarnevaLöa was acknowledged by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism as a “historical carnival” for its significant role in promoting the region’s tourism for over a hundred years
The tradition has evolved into the modern era
In the 19th century and up until the early 20th century
it was customary to perform comedies in theaters: initially in a hall located in the city center at Piazza Rocca
then in the municipal theater or the former Cappuccini church
Historical research has revealed that this tradition began as early as 1800
but it was in the early 1900s that the event
became a major popular celebration rooted in its Christian origins
Beyond promoting the organization of CarnevaLöa
Vecchia Loano is engaged in various projects aimed at reviving the city’s historical traditions
not only those tied to carnival but also the sixteenth-century era of the Doria princes and the lore of witches
It is said that since the seventeenth century
esoteric practices were conducted in the Borgo Castello area
To enhance carnival-related events further
the Municipality of Loano has constructed a 1500-square-meter pavilion
This space also houses the “papier-mâché school” which
promotes the knowledge and transmission of float-building techniques to new generations
Vecchia Loano has initiated several workshop activities with local high schools
is a co-founder of the National Coordination Center for Italian Masks
and the Princess Doria of the Castle are included in the “Register of Italian Masks,” which catalogs all masks of Italian commedia dell’arte and the folkloric characters from various regional traditions
The initiative aims to elevate the carnival not just as a moment of enjoyment but also as a historical
the Cultural Forum of Borghetto Santo Spirito
and the Pro Loco of Toirano established the “Committee of Historical and Folkloric Ligurian Characters”
Its primary goal is to unite all Ligurian masks under a single “brand” and coordinate the efforts of local associations involved in organizing and promoting the region’s carnivals
Although the Committee serves as a regional reference
it closely collaborates with the Italian Masks Coordination
This vital tool enhances the organization of various Ligurian associations and their associated masks
which now embody more than mere ‘characters’—they carry stories
The Committee delves into the historical and cultural aspects of existing masks and aims to revive those forgotten
deserving to be reinstated among the Ligurian traditional masks
the carnival masks of Loano made their debut at the 80th Columbus Day in New York
Capitan Fracassa and Princess Zenobia del Carretto Doria participated in the prestigious parade on Fifth Avenue alongside other Ligurian masks as part of the Italian Masks Coordination Center
The parade represented Italy during the national day commemorating the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus
attended by New York Mayor Eric Adams and Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies Giorgio Mulè
The participation in this event was made possible by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Italea and Italy Discovery under the project “The Roots Tourism,” in which the Italian Masks Coordination Center participated

a fire broke out on board 29m Ferretti-built Lady Vanilla that was berthed at Marina di Loano
it is believed that the fire developed in the engine room
with initial observations suggesting the conflagration began when batteries overheated therein
The fire service arrived on the scene and it took them over two hours to extinguish the flames
a task that was made all the more difficult by Friday’s strong winds
about 30 workers from the Yacht Club di Loano were evacuated
While the exact circumstances on board Lady Vanilla are not known in the lead up to the fire
initial reports seem to suggest that the fire on board this yacht is a near-perfect example of why insurers have major concerns about minimum manning standards and battery technologies
Miller commented: “[One] of our concerns
is the minimum manning requirement on private vessels at the lower end of the superyacht spectrum – in so far as there are none
“During Typical wintering periods (which have now been extended) we are seeing a number of unmanned private vessels in marinas and shipyards
there may be some that only have one crew member on board for a limited number of hours in each day
these unmanned or minimally manned vessels pose a serious risk to the vessel and other vessels in the vicinity
There have been too many fires on board superyachts
some of which have spread to neighbouring vessels because of the lack of manning requirements
the situation has become so dire where yacht fires are concerned that many major insurers are looking at implementing their own manning requirements within policies
“It is as if people expect fires to only occur between the hours of 09.00-17.00
invariably the fire occurs at the most impractical times of the day,” continues Miller
there may be a senior crew member who lives 45 minutes away from the vessel
45 minutes is far too long to mitigate serious damage
Taking a 30-40m composite superyacht as an example
we like to see at least two crew members permanently on board that have an operational knowledge of the safety systems and who could
in the event of an emergency move the vessel if needed in order to mitigate the possibility of there being multiple losses.”
While it must be noted that there will be a period of investigation before any conclusions can be drawn from the fire on board Lady Vanilla
if the initial assumptions prove to be correct that the fire was caused by an overheating battery
then Lady Vanilla would become the most recent in a series of lithium-ion battery-related incidents
it has long been accepted that these batteries pose a serious fire risk on board superyachts if the various systems that require them are not stored and maintained properly

Regardless of one’s origins, everyone is somehow fascinated by harbors. The sound of the siren, the pungent salty smell in fall foggy nights, the rumble of the wind, and the roaring of the waves in turbulent winter days. There are numerous nuances that connote seashores. Yet, there is a constant touch of mystery when cities immerse in the sea. There is always a sense of tenderness when waves are tamed.
For centuries, harbors have been more than places. They have been the scene of adventures, a jumble of cultures, and oddities of all kinds. They have been the place where memories become stories, stories turn into legends, and legends often become myths.
In times forged by the industry, the race to the space and the rumble of shuttles, harbors seem to be outdated places that are frequently desolate or heavily industrialized. They are now severed from the cities they once used to liven up as cultural epicenters and beating hearts.
Courtesy of YAC - Young Architects CompetitionsWhat is the role of harbors in the web and smartphone era then?
This is the question Leisure Harbor aims to answer. This is the competition by BT and Marina di Loano to define the future of harbors by redesigning one of the 10 most important marinas of Europe. It is indeed a remarkable opportunity to rediscover harbors as lively places, city epicenters overlooking the sea, and privileged cultural and social places.

Olive oil has been a cornerstone of Mediterranean cuisine for the past 5,000 years. One of the first written mentions of pressed olive juice is recorded in the 19th-century BC Hammurabi Code
olive oil was traded by the ancient Egyptians and the Phoenicians to Greece
During Roman times, olive oil became a pillar of the Roman Empire's economy, and a dedicated commodity exchange known as “Arca Olearia” was developed to buy and sell the “golden juice.” As recent archeological excavations have proved
olives were indeed part of Jesus' Last Supper.
so consumption of olive oil decreased. Olive oil became a rare commodity in the Middle Ages
Olive groves were abandoned and olive trees were mostly used as demarcation tools to mark the borders between different fields
the cultivation of olive trees for olive oil was mostly preserved thanks to Catholic monks
Olive trees were often cultivated around monasteries and churches
as olive oil was used for sacraments and for lighting oil lamps
And monks often had the time and dedication to turn what at the time were dull
unproductive lands into olive-producing fields
Many olive oil-producing regions of Italy owe their current olive oil production to the inventiveness of Catholic monks. In Liguria, the mountainous northern Italian region overlooking the Mediterranean also known as the Italian riviera, Benedictine monks turned steep uncultivated hills into olive-producing lands thanks to the creation of dry stone terraces.
In Umbria, a central Italian region home to Catholic landmarks like Spoleto and Orvieto cathedrals, Benedictine monks from the Abbey of St. Felix transformed formerly abandoned olive groves into a hotspot of olive production
In Latium, the central Italian region home to Rome and Bolsena, Benedictine monks turned abandoned olive groves into olive oil-producing lands all around the Tower of San Donato
Today, some of the finest olive oil produced in Italy is still made by monks. In Bardolino, near Verona, monks living in the 500-year-old Eremo Camaldolese regularly mill the estate’s centuries-old olive trees to make extra virgin olive oil.
But you don’t have to travel to Italy to try monastic olive oil. Thanks to the internet, many of these centuries-old products are now available to international customers through a dedicated e-portal.

Intanto facciamo i complimenti a tutti i Campioni Italiani
e a Joyce Floridia davanti a Martha Faraguna e Valentina Balbi dello Yacht Club Italiano
dichiarazioni e tutte ‘ste menate….

At an exclusive event held at Marina di Loano
in collaboration with Omega Architects and Van Oossanen Naval Architects
introduced an expectant crowd to the new LOV 38 project
The initials of the three brands have been amalgamated to from the name of the project
with the project title also so named to express the three companies love for the ocean
“Meeting Frank Laupman of Omega and Perry Van Oossanen was one of those Eureka moments
Lynx took pride and pleasure working alongside Omega and Van Oossanen to define the best yachting experience in the 30 to 40 metre range,” explained Slim Bourchia
Beautifully styled by Omega with elegant lines and refined interiors
the LOV series will be crafted by Lynx Yachts to the highest standards engineered by Van Oossanen
This remarkable LOV series embarks a phenomenal pedigree of expertise to provide seasoned yachtsmen with memorable experiences.”
“Meeting Frank Laupman of Omega and Perry Van Oossanen was one of those Eureka moments."
LOV 38’s masculine exterior is perhaps more indicative of Omega and Van Oosanen’s undeniably Dutch influences
which is particularly expressed by a near vertical bow and forward inclined wheelhouse
with its shipyard in The Netherlands and Italian senior management
has always been a combination of both Dutch and Italian influences
a facet of the business that Frank Laupman
was eager to highlight at Marina di Loano in respect to the LOV 38 project
“Lynx has a beautiful shipyard with some key technical Individuals
We met together with the managing director and the idea was to make a superyacht that has Dutch-built quality with some Italian flare added to it,” said Laupman
“This last part is particularly difficult to achieve.”
With Lynx Yachts being a custom superyacht builder
the LOV 38 project has been designed with a number of layout options available
the intention being that the project is a starting point for a future custom project
“The idea is that everything is there
We wanted to create a superyacht [concept] with a number of accommodation variations
the owner could also be on the upper deck,” continued Laupman
we condensed all the traffic spaces on board
we must be honest because this just the first cooperation and when a client comes
they will see this project as a starting point
Then the really interesting process begins and we will have to see where that leads us.” See below for GA options
"...we must be honest because this just the first cooperation and when a client comes
they will see this project as a starting point."
The idea was for this young shipyard to make a superyacht concept that was versatile in order to suit all the specific requirements that a client may come laden with
for Lynx to retain its identify by making use of a number of the styling elements that have characterised Lynx’s rugged explorer style support vessels
LOV 38 will be made out of aluminium with a Van Oossanen Fast Displacement Hull Form
“I have always admired the capacity that Omega and Van Oossanen have to push boundaries of design
The latest productions of these two studies represent something new on the market
with great focus to research and innovation
Lynx has the same approach and is pleased to work together with Omega and Van Oosanen on this new yacht series
This project makes another goal for the shipyard
and sets forth the entrance into a new segment of the market,” concluded Filippo Rossi
sales & marketing manager of Lynx Yachts

tied to traditions that date back centuries
It’s the Carnival of the Beautiful and the Ugly in Suvero di Rocchetta Vara
Tradition dictates that the boys dress up in the same costumes used by their fathers and grandfathers in the past: the Beautiful wear clothes with bright and flowery colors
They wear hats covered with the same fabric
and their faces are painted black or covered with “bautte,” masks with dark and grim features
They wear cowbells tied around their waists
They parade through the streets of the village
While the host prepares refreshments to appease them
the Beautiful make the women of the family dance
while the Ugly play jokes and pranks on everyone
Guests and co-stars of this edition of the most unique Carnival in Liguria will be the fascinating “S’Urtzu e Sos Bardianos” from Sardinia and “Alfagor Krampus” from Merano

someone started celebrating Carnival just like they do in Rio de Janeiro: with lots of floats and joy
This gave rise to one of the longest-standing Carnivals in Liguria and one of the most enjoyable: in the 1980s
all eight floats from various neighborhoods would gather in the “Smiles Hangar” to set up their creations together
“i Marmessi,” “i De longu i stessi,” “i Periferici,” “i Perdigiurni,” “Quelli da Sciumaia,” “Goliardi Dianesi,” “gli Amixi de Sanbertumè,” and “i Foa de testa” have been parading through the city during Carnival
the celebrations will officially begin on Saturday
the day of the finale of the 74th Sanremo Festival
with an imitation of the famous Sanremo stage dedicated
“Carnevale si Ama” will indeed be the title of the 2024 event organized with the patronage of the Municipality by the Famia Dianese Association
which on February 18th will dedicate “Carnevale dei Bimbi” to the little ones
and the awarding of the best “Baby Mask” awaits families for a day of fun
Not to be missed from 2 pm to 6 pm is also the traditional parade of allegorical floats with masked groups
it starts with the shivers of the 2nd Pumpkin Challenge
polenta and wine will be served by the Alpine Group and the Sailor Group of Moneglia
the colors and joy of the 29th edition of the Pumpkin Carnival will enliven the village during the Grand Parade of masks
the eagerly awaited awarding of the most beautiful masks
There will be eight categories in competition: Best float
If you think you have what it takes to bring home at least one of the highly coveted titles
hurry to register for Carnival by February 10th

a non-profit organization in charge of expanding free software as a measure to seek equality in access to this system
promoting GNU Health as a project that promotes improvements in medical information
offering benefits to patients and health professionals
According to the needs of the center or institution
GNU Health offers the following modules within the system:
Each GNU Health module can be customized according to the needs of the health center
in addition they do not have restrictions with respect to the operating system
those modules that are considered relevant or necessary in the main view can be modified or added
GNU Health is based on Triton
with a platform that manages data registration
oriented for the administration of various types of businesses; ranging within its functionality from the registration of counterparties (customers or distributors) to records at the accounting or billing level
Language widely used within programming developments and with a large community that supports it
so we constantly see developers and health professionals making contributions for this suite of tools
In this way its functionality is guaranteed in operating systems such as Windows
GNU Health is already used in several countries worldwide. Being a great option as a public health system, thanks to the fact that it is completely free and adaptable to different health centers. And although its creator Luis Falcon
began as a project for the prevention of diseases and health campaigns
today it has evolved to be a fairly complete system for the administration of health centers
facilitating their work to the personnel of these institutions
The idea lies not only in improving the information registration system
but also in giving access to an optimal system for all communities that need it
