How best to see Italy’s dreamy Ligurian coast

Make Your Choice: The Key Decision in Italy

I first visited Portofino three years ago on a romantic long weekend getaway with my husband
My first impression was that it was like stepping into a picturesque storybook
with its beautiful and well-presented surroundings
What stood out to me on that first trip was the authentic side of Portofino
I encountered typical Italian families who call this spot home and heard the enchanting traditional Italian music following me down the cobbled lanes
known for its delightful atmosphere and exquisite seafood dishes with a twist – think yellowtail ceviche or jalapeno sashimi – as well as a dedicated oyster bar
a traditional little cafe and ice cream parlour on Piazzetta della Magnolia
Delfino on Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta is a favourite of mine
I highly recommend trying the trofie al pesto paired with a basket of freshly baked focaccia for a truly authentic meal
One of my go-to places is Antica Drogheria Seghezzo
a gorgeous little patisserie in Santa Margherita Ligure
where I indulge in their fabulous macarons and always buy some to bring home as a treat for my husband
It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee and enjoy the atmosphere while watching the world go by
or simply the opportunity to observe the bustling scene
these spots offer a delightful respite and a chance to savour the moment
Ristorante PunyWhere would you head in the evening? For a delightful aperitivo experience, Ristorante Puny is a must-visit
Its beautiful outdoor seating facing the port offers a perfect spot to enjoy the iconic Rossini cocktail (prosecco with strawberry juice) and the sunset
and there’s a lively buzz in the air as people return from their boat trips
Bay of San FruttuosoGetty ImagesWhere do you go for some culture?Portofino offers a wealth of architectural and artistic wonders
adorned with stunning frescoes resembling paintings
Every corner of Portofino exudes an artistic ambience that captivates the senses
I highly recommend visiting the bay of San Fruttuoso
where a Benedictine abbey was built in the eighth century
Another must-visit cultural gem is Castello Brown
a place that not only captivates with its charm but also provides a panoramic view of the entire area
is an experience that leaves a lasting impression
Exploring these cultural landmarks serves as a welcome escape from the digital world
I enjoy starting my day with a refreshing swim – just climbing down the rocks and jumping into that clear blue water
Its rocky coastline adds a touch of rustic charm
and I love its serenity as there are fewer people around
which is conveniently close to where I stay
the beaches are lined with umbrellas and a great atmosphere with plenty of people
I usually prefer to take a leisurely walk here
as it allows me to embrace the vibrant energy of the surroundings fully
Cinque TerreGetty ImagesDo you take any day trips?During my last visit, my husband and I had the opportunity to embark on a day trip to Cinque Terre
Its breathtaking scenic views and rugged coastline left me in awe
I enjoyed trying the most exquisite pesto I have ever tasted
adding a delightful culinary experience to the trip
I always make it a point to embark on a boat trip
It is undoubtedly the best way to uncover hidden coves and beaches that are inaccessible from the land
I don’t love buying clothes on holiday; I prefer exploring open-air markets and immersing myself in the local culinary delights
One of the best spots is the open-air markets of Santa Margherita
where I pick up olive oils and delectable sweet treats
I enjoy discovering the markets where the locals
especially the nonnas (Italian for grandmothers)
the street market in Camogli on Wednesdays is a must-visit
We discovered a hidden gem in the town of Chiavari near Portofino
This captivating spot that stole our hearts is the Palazzo Rocco Botanic Garden
and tranquil atmosphere make it a perfect retreat to immerse yourself in nature
I love packing items that capture the town’s beauty
The Dolce&Gabbana x Mytheresa exclusive Portofino collection perfectly embodies the vibrant colours of the destination
I adore the matching bralette and skirt from this collection
Sunscreen is also a must-have for any sun-drenched holiday
Dr Barbara Sturm sun drops, £45, Cult Beauty
I love this Baywatch meets Portofino swimsuit
Dolce & Gabbana Portofino striped halterneck swimsuit, £675, MyTheresa
The Aya Muse semi-sheer lace maxi dress is my go-to for elegant evening wear
Aya Muse semi-sheer lace maxi dress, £674, MyTheresa
I opt for the Givenchy Marshmallow sandals
which provide extra height and allow me to walk all day without any discomfort
Givenchy Marshmallow wedge sandals, £475. MyTheresa

08:30am EDTShareSaveThis article is more than 5 years old.Rapallo and its harbor
While Portofino and Cinque Terre are the best-known spots on the Italian Riviera today
Rapallo is a destination that can provide all you want for a perfect weekend (or longer) getaway
As one of Italy’s first modern seaside resorts
a place the beau monde flocked to in the early 20th century
Rapallo's prime location makes it easy to visit most anywhere on the Riviera di Levante
the halcyon strip of coast that runs from Genoa to Portovenere
Here are 11 ways to have a perfect (preferably extended) weekend here
Occasionally the service is available at night
when you’ll be able to see the coast at its glittery best
or send a car to take you to Santa Margherita Ligure for departure there
If you're staying at the Excelsior Palace Hotel
the concierge will arrange boating excursions
See below.) Should you not be traveling by sea
note that train connections are easy and fast—only three minutes to go from Rapallo to Santa Margherita Ligure; nine minutes to Camogli; and between 35 minutes to an hour to Monterosso al Mare (the closest Cinque Terre village)
The fastest trains to Vernazza run between 36 and 56 minutes
3. Pamper yourself in sumptuous style. One of the Riviera’s grand retreats, the Excelsior Palace Hotel will pamper you with its refined blending of modern and old-world luxury
At this property you’ll feel as if you’ve been invited into the (very large) home of a Genovese aristocrat—there are period paintings and decorative objects
along with plush modern bedrooms and bathrooms
Spectacular views from seaside rooms and dining areas are sure to keep you in a permanent swoon
where the Rapallo Conference was held by the Allied nations after Germany’s defeat in the first World War
Prominent names have been coming here for decades—the Duke and Duchess of Windsor
Marilyn Monroe and Ernest Hemingway were all guests; in more recent times
George Clooney and Bruce Springsteen as well
Start your day with the lavish breakfast buffet (with prosecco if you'd like) served in the Lord Byron restaurant overlooking the sea (there's a spacious outdoor terrace too)
In summer the Lord Byron also serves dinner
with a menu offering dishes like an asparagus flan appetizer with zabaione; risotto with roasted lobster and peas; and fresh grilled fish
(The seaside Eden Roc restaurant is the hotel's summer lunch spot; in winter the Lord Byron serves lunch.) You can work off calories at the sleek modern spa and fitness area
which has an indoor pool to use in cool-weather months
The Excelsior offers another special amenity—a private dock at the beach club where you can depart on boating excursions (booked in advance) to such destinations as Portofino
A stay at the hotel can run less than at other five-star properties along the French and Italian Rivieras
where room rates in summer are often well over €1000 a night
This year doubles with sea views and a balcony in peak season range from €770 to €965; the rate for a non-sea-view room
during the second half of August and September is €386
One of the infinity pools overlooking the coast
The Eden Roc Restaurant and part of the beach area
(You can pay a fee to use it if you're not staying at the hotel.) Two striking infinity pools and their lounge areas overlook that gorgeous Riviera coastline and beach terraces on the levels below provide access to the vividly colored sea
You probably won’t want to budge from this spot all day (or ever)
unless you decide to swim to the floats (materassini prendisole) positioned offshore
so it’s good there’s both a snack bar and the chic Eden Roc restaurant close at hand
tennis is available here—there are four clay and two synthetic-grass courts
The club is about two kilometers from the Rapallo train station
Ingredients for making pesto at the Vecchia Rapallo restaurant
6. Learn how to cook Ligurian dishes. At the Vecchia Rapallo, a noted restaurant with a prime location in the historic center
there are classes to help you master the art of making such Ligurian specialties as pesto
and stuffed vegetables the way the pros and locals do
you get to enjoy your culinary efforts at lunch
If you want to savor a range of Ligurian flavors
come back for dinner and try one of the restaurant's tasting menus
there's pear ravioli served with cheese; on the Menù Marinaio the octopus salad with pistachios
is followed by sea-bream ravioli in scampi sauce
Caffé Pasticceria Canepa 1862 has been baking pastries for 157 years
7. Indulge your sweet tooth at one of Italy’s iconic pastry shops. Since the 19th century the Caffé Pasticceria Canepa 1862 has been tempting Riviera residents and visitors with irresistible pastries and cakes
quince jam-filled treats that have been produced here for more than 150 years
There are many other sweets to savor including pandolce
the Easter specialty; solluccheri cookies and sugar-flecked airy brioches
owned today by Giovanni Garbarini and pastry chef Andrea Zino
can ship their delicious products anywhere
8.Explore lesser-known nearby spots like San Michele di Pagana
Relax at this beautiful seaside hamlet between Rapallo and Santa Margarita Ligure
Despite its small size this haven has a major piece of art
for exquisite hand-woven velvets and damasks
stroll the medieval quarter and the various arcades
and if you're in the area the second weekend of the month
check out its well-known antiques and flea market
you'll find a long (4 kilometer) beach
perched high on the promontory and dating from the 1400s
You can also stop by the Castello di Dragonara in Camogli and take in the remarkable sea views from its exterior
There are number of other castles to see as you work your way down the Riviera di Levante coast to Portovenere
People have caught on a bit now now but apart from the light sprinkling of tourists
I can say that time stands still in Santa Margherita
There's a softness and old nostalgia to the place which makes me extremely sentimental
Da GennaroPiazza Martiri della Libertà
16038My favourite restaurant right in the heart of Santa Margherita
It’s been going since 1947 and has the same maître d’ working there from when my mother and father first moved here in the Eighties
It’s the best place to try traditional Ligurian food
Everything on the menu is delicious and it's sandwiched between both Bar ‘Miami’ and ‘Sabot’ - both excellent places to go for an apperitivo beforehand
SeghezzoVia Cavour, 1, 16038
Probably the chicest ‘supermercato’ you will ever come across, it has been going since 1905 and remains a family business to this day, run today by the three charming Seghezzo brothers – Filippo, Emanuelle and Guiseppe. Find everything from home made marzipan fruits, to their own brand of ‘Fragolino’ liqueur with wild strawberries via Marvis toothpaste.
SeghezzoPasta Fresca CasazzaVia Cavour, 9, 16038
If you want to ‘cook’ you can buy fresh trofie and pesto from here which is totally delicious, cheap, and a speciality of the region. The packaging and hand-painted sign are heaven, too, and it will take you three minutes to make.
What to doHotel Continental
Mimi sunbathing at Hotel ContinentalBeautifully manicured gardens and a lovely restaurant with the classic rock carved out so that the sea resembles a swimming pool with steps so you don’t have to launch yourself off a rock
you can either rent deck chairs for the day or for the whole season as most of the Milanese do who come down for the whole summer
St FruttuosoA short boat ride away from Santa and just past Portofino is the most beautiful cove with the clearest waters
where the enormous 'Christ of the Abyss' (Cristo degli Abissi) bronze statue lives at bottom of the sea
It’s fun to go by boat and look down to see him covered in moss and algae in the watery depth with the reflection of the sun shining through the water and his arms stretch upwards towards the light
Green mountainous coastline surrounds the beach which is only accessible by foot or by boat
up in the hills you can visit the Benedictine Monastery
right on the beach and then walk up to the 16th century watchtower
I like the mixture of nuns with scantily clad italians in leopard bikinis and speedos – it's splendidly Italian
Apparently Madonna makes the pilgrimage by foot each year and the lady's selling lemonade in the hills have no idea who she is and when she tried to buy a drink they asked her to hand over the three euros first
It's like going back in time in a way and nothing ever changes

Frolicking in the Mediterranean Sea, soaking up the sun, sipping perfectly chilled rosato (Italian-style rosé), and savoring seafood spaghetti is the stuff of summer vacation fantasies. At least it was for me, and that’s why I planned a holiday to the Italian Riviera in late June
We stayed in a quaint fishing village on the Golfo Paradiso in Liguria
the crescent-shaped coastal region in northwest Italy that’s home to the glamorous hotspot of Portofino
larger yet still darling Santa Margherita Ligure
less-trammeled towns that are well worth exploring
one place in particular — San Fruttuoso — somewhere that hadn’t even been on my radar prior to jetting off
A slightly off-the-beaten-track Ligurian idyll, San Fruttuoso is a sheltered spit nestled between Portofino Regional Natural Park and the blue sea that feels like a true escape. A trip here presents the ideal opportunity to enjoy relaxed seaside fun, beautiful scenery, and authentic Italian food. Though technically a cove, it very much gives off Mediterranean island vibes
that’s because it’s separated from the rest of the Promontory of Portofino by untouched wilderness and most people take a boat — either the ferry
Hiking paths wind through the forested mountainside from Camogli
The panoramas coming in from the sea really wow
I’m told the vantage points from the leafy hillside trails are quite stunning as well
Once you step off the boat (or reach the bottom of the pathway)
the full scope of this tiny treasure comes into focus
Lindsay Cohn The swimming beach has smooth pebbles and clear tides that are protected by rocky outcrops
I highly recommend arriving early to rent chairs and umbrellas
Shelling out a few Euros to post up in style also provides access to a roped-off section of the pristine bay
you’re subjugated to trying to find a few feet to roll out a towel in the crowded back corner
Regardless of a garnering squished or spacious perch
the time spent lounging doesn’t compare to the joyful hours in the calm
warm yet refreshing water that beckons just a few steps away
which was erected by Greek monks in the 10th century
When coupled with the towering 1562-built Torre Doria
it creates the sort of visual you’d only ever imagine seeing on a travel brochure — truly unlike anything I’ve encountered IRL
making it a uniquely atmospheric spot to dig into a plate of lasagnette with pesto
plus a spa that feels like a best-kept secret
there's no rule against plotting Italian Riviera adventures for summer 2023
it's the perfect time to start thinking about flights
and dazzling day trips to San Fruttuoso before everyone else

known worldwide for its picturesque harbour with crystal waters and the cobbled piazzetta that overlooks it
With family-run seafood restaurants and chic boutiques
not to mention one of the region’s smartest hotels
it’s no wonder the area is internationally renowned
Monterosso was briefly excluded from the list on account of its size
olive groves and terraced vineyards whose fragrances linger in the air
Its vibrantly hued buildings climb steeply from sea level through the hills
and many romantic footpaths leading to the other four villages start here
Perhaps the most famous trail is Via dell’Amore
although it is currently closed for reconstruction
Manarola is one of the most charming villages of the Cinque Terre
and widely considered to be the most beautiful
where you will find a church and bell tower
but what it lacks in glamour it more than makes up for in character
The pretty seaside promenade of palm trees
small shops and food joints looks out onto a pebble beach
with row upon row of matching sunbeds and parasols and a walkway into the sea

ShareSaveLifestyleTravel7 Reasons To Visit This Beautiful Italian Riviera Town Before Everyone Else DoesByCatherine Sabino
It's one of the most beautiful towns in an Italian region with a roster of villages and hamlets known for their wow factor
Which may be why Camogli on the Italian Riviera has never really stepped out of the long and glamorous shadow of its neighbor Portofino or become a tourist mecca like the Cinque Terre
While the Milanese and Turinese have summered here for years and northern Europeans come for the sun and the splendid hiking trails crisscrossing the Portofino promontory
Camogli remains a cognoscenti favorite--it's a slice of the Riviera from decades ago
before the designer stores came to line seaside promenades and celebrities to park their yachts in the marinas of better-known Ligurian towns
Here are 7 reasons to visit if you're contemplating a seaside jaunt to Italy
Photo by Olaf Protze/LightRocket via Getty Images
Camogli is an exquisite village with a stage-set perfect seafront rimmed with gorgeously colored palazzi and houses
Building facades were painted in tones of apricot
and amber and decorated with trompe l'oeil architectural elements for practical as well as aesthetic reasons--it made the town easy for seamen to identify from the water
Camogli's pragmatic beauty is an enduring reminder of the village's longtime maritime power and history as a thriving seaport
Camogli is not about the latest designer bikini or sandal
although it's easy to find plenty of Mercedes
Alfas and Ranger Rovers in the parking lot of the Cenobio dei Dogi
While the restaurants and wine bars lining the seaside promenade (Via Giuseppe Garibaldi) are hopping on a summer weekend
you don't come to Camogli expecting to find an over-the-top nightlife
although places like Il Barcollo and the Pub La Cage Aux Folles draw a lively
a cozy spot perched above the marina known for its updated Ligurian classics
a ravioli-like pasta filled with pesto and served with fresh tomatoes
the local summer fish Leccia and the amaretto pudding
5. Focaccia like you've never tasted it before. Focaccia is to Liguria what bruschetta is to Umbria--an essential bread treat that turns up from breakfast to aperitivo. At local institution, the Focacceria Revello
among them the Camogli version with onion and sage
The sweet offerings at Revello include the internationally known Camogliesi
pastries with cream fillings flavored with rum
including the savory pies (made with artichokes
onion and other fillings) and Genoa’s famous sweet bread

memorable trails affording spectacular views
from Camogli to San Fruttuoso (a little over four miles)
7. Great boating excursions. Rent a boat and tour famous nearby towns like Portofino, Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure fronting the Golfo del Tigullio, and farther south the Cinque Terre and Portovenere. From Mussini Giorgio
a mainstay in Portofino for nearly 40 years
(Rates: For excursions in and around the Portofino peninsula
150 euros per hour; 700 euros per day for an 8-meter boat that accommodates one to seven people
For an all-day excursion to the Cinque Terre with an 11-meter boat
and offers excursions to Cinque Terre and Portovenere
The Cenobio dei Dogi's restaurants offer extensive sea views
A terrace leading to the beach at the hotel
Where to Stay: The four-star hotel Cenobio dei Dogi has an incomparable location overlooking the coast and the town's seaside promenade
which had been a retreat for Genoa aristocrats from the 16th century
Designed to have the feel of a private home by the sea
private beach and three restaurants providing blissful views from morning to night
The beginning of the history of Villa Durazzo in Santa Margherita Ligure can be traced back to 1678
when the Durazzo family decided to build a summer residence here
The Durazzos were one of the most important noble families of Genoa
although their rise to the patriciate is more recent than that of families of older nobility such as the Spinola
and the Grimaldi: the Durazzos were in fact originally from the eponymous Albanian city
from where at the end of the fourteenth century the known progenitor
had arrived as a refugee together with his wife and three children
Having become wealthy silk merchants within a century
they were enrolled in the Liber Nobilitatis of Genoa in 1528
and aggregated to the Albergo dei Grimaldi
the respective consortium of noble families related to each other
they succeeded to the highest office in the Republic of Genoa
when Giacomo Grimaldi Durazzo became doge (in all
the family would give nine doges to the Republic)
but it was nevertheless a distinguished member of the family
eldest son of Gerolamo and Maria Chiavari and grandson of Giovanni Luca Chiavari
who was doge himself between 1627 and 1629
It was he who had the present Villa Durazzo built
Giovanni Luca had inherited from his father Gerolamo
who in turn had obtained it from the Chiavari family
a house with a tower that has been attested since 1609 on the site where Villa Durazzo now stands
and which was located within land that in ancient times had been the property of another important Genoese family
was a castle that had defensive and sighting purposes
and which had been built in the 16th century as an outpost against barbarian raids
Giovanni Luca decided to radically renovate the property
he had initiated an intense activity of real estate investment: it will at least be necessary to recall how
Eugenio bought the sumptuous Palazzo Balbi promoting major extension works (today the mansion is known as Palazzo Reale
having become the residence of the Savoys when Genoa came under the Kingdom of Sardinia)
and is one of the largest and most important in the city
Work on the arrangement of the “palazzo che sua Signoria Ill.ma fa fabricare nel luogho di S.ta Margarita,” as we read in the first contract for the supply of limestone
Giovanni Luca was not in time to see the villa finished
whose work was prolonged beyond measure (by the date of 1707 it was in fact not yet finished)
the villa presented itself as a massive building with a square plan
structured on two noble floors each with a mezzanine
and mellowed on the outside by the angular ashlarwork that starts from the ground and reaches the cornice
by the cornices that frame all the windows
and by the corbels that run on the cornice and that we also find under the first-floor windows
we also observe a small balcony with marble pilasters
a sort of trademark of the sculptor Giovanni Pietro Orsolino
employed on the site (they are also found in the Royal Palace)
The modules are those typical of seventeenth-century Genoa
until before the discovery of the documents with the dates
tradition attributed the design of the villa to Galeazzo Alessi)
in a surprising way as noted by the scholar Colette Bozzo Dufour
who devoted a dense monograph to Villa Durazzo: because it was a model dating back more than a century earlier
The villa had to be finished just in time for 1708
the year in which the Senate of the Republic of Genoa decreed the transfer to Santa Margherita Ligure of the foreign exchange fairs that had previously been held in Sestri Levante: these were fairs
and in which the Durazzo family regularly participated with their agents
“the Villa assumed an even greater representative role
which resulted in a further enrichment of valuable furnishings.” The Durazzo family’s season was short-lived
since by the second half of the 18th century the mansion had already been abandoned by the family: thus
Marquis Marcello Durazzo sold the villa to Giovanni Battista Centurione Scotto
whose family held ownership of the building until 1919
The Villa Durazzo we see today is essentially the result of the interventions of the two families
It is also true of the important picture gallery: no inventories have yet been discovered that could attribute the individual works in it to the Durazzo or Centurione families
but by reconstructing the history of some of the pieces
it has been possible to shed a little light at least on the vicissitudes of some of the most important works
The visitor begins his itinerary from the atrium
with a landing accessed by climbing five slate steps: an expedient designed to make the room more scenic
made it an ideal venue for concerts that are still held there
near the large wooden chests in the Genoese style
with large backs bearing the Centurione coat of arms
is the work of Nicolò Maria Vaccaro (Genoa
filtered through the inspiration of Giovanni Bernardo Carbone
Vandyckian culture that in the last decade of the 17th century
Two other rooms are visited on the first floor: the first is the Vietri Drawing Room
which stands out for its beautiful 18th-century Neapolitan majolica floor (hence the name of the room
which in ancient times was used as a dining room)
and for the Romantic-style lunettes by the Sammargherite painter Giovanni Franceschetti
who had worked in the villa in the early 20th century at the behest of Giulio Centurione
We also find there a copy of Raphael’s St
so named for the four eighteenth-century paintings by Giovanni Enrico Vaymer (Genoa
1665 - 1738) hanging on the walls: these are portraits of three members of the Centurione family (Charles II
the great-grandfather of the Giovanni Battista who bought the villa
his wife Francesca Spinola with their daughter Giulia
and another portrait of Giulia as Cleopatra)
One then ascends the grand slate staircase
at the end of which is a gallery where one notices a marble bust of Giovanni Luca Durazzo
one enters the mezzanine level where the Vittorio G
who donated his studio (reconstructed in one of the two parts into which the room is divided) and his collection of memorabilia and works of art to the City of Santa Margherita Ligure
the room also preserves his novels (including 1929’s The Sea Witches
inspired by his experience as a pilot of a MAS
during World War I) and the magazines where his articles came out
a bedroom furnished mostly with 20th-century chinoiserie
but where some of Villa Durazzo’s most interesting paintings are to be found
This is the case of a 16th-century Saint Lucia of the Emilian school
and especially of the two Amorini reggi festo by Domenico Piola (Genoa
as well as of the two 17th-century paintings by Luciano Borzone (Genoa
1590 - 1645) referable to the Durazzo commission and depicting the Death of Cleopatra and the Death of Lucretia
“late works of the master,” as art historian Francesca Fabbri writes
“echoes here the much-admired Caravaggesque structures
especially in the details of the old woman with her head covered and the bystanders with their mouths half-closed; the vibrant coloring
for which Borzone’s canvases were greatly appreciated
made with quick touches of pictorial matter.” Interestingly
since the exaltation of female virtues was intended to celebrate “the Republic of Genoa
its virtue and its independence.” The next Music Salon has a piano at its center
surrounded by 19th-century pieces of furniture and 17th-century paintings: here then is a Triumph of Flora by an unknown Venetian painter
two paintings from the Bassano school depicting Spring andSummer
theEcce Homo by Giovanni Battista Paggi (Genoa
“beautiful” as Fabbri rightly defines it
but unfortunately curtailed in the lower part (“the monumental theatricality of the canvas,” writes the scholar
“nothing detracts from themotivity of the theme: a cadenced and almost silent rhythm invests the sequence of faces and directs the gaze along the diagonals made of the characters’ gestures and from the plane of the balustrade
to be placed at the beginning of the seventeenth century for the skillful light passages and for the updating
on Florentine and Emilian culture.”)
probable that in the figure of Pilate the artist wished to depict a contemporary character
since the reflectographs carried out during the restoration of the canvas
found the presence of a lace collar and a buttoned jacket
one encounters the Salotto delle Grottesche
which owes its name to its decorations: here
around the fine polychrome Murano glass chandelier that stands out in the center of the room
which like the other two preserved in the Venetian Room represent five fragments of a painted frieze that most likely decorated the cornice of a room
The room then hosts some landscapes from the workshop of the De Wael
token Flemish artists active in seventeenth-century Genoa
and a Joseph refusing the gifts of his brothers by Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari (Genoa
a masterpiece of Baroque theatricality and drama
which overlooks the sea and was once a loggia
The ceiling is decorated with theAllegory of the Four Seasons
while on the left wall is a small frescoed chapel
at the center of which is an early 18th-century Crucifixion
A plaque on the hall recalls that in 1976 Villa Durazzo was visited by Karol Wojtyła
After pausing to admire the view of the gulf
we resume our tour and arrive in the Salotto del Camino
characterized by a grotesque ceiling by Giovanni Franceschetti and especially by the majolica-tiled fireplace bearing a bas-relief of the god Vulcan in the center
There we also find two battle scenes by Cornelis de Wael (Antwerp
testifying to how much the Flemish was in demand by 17th-century Genoese patrons
also known as the Queen’s Room: lovers of the romantic chronicle cannot help but notice that the room owes its name to the fact that Queen Margherita stayed here as a guest in 1904
On the walls here instead is a Ballad of Peasants by Cornelis and Lucas de Wael and a Coastal Landscape with Ruin by a follower of Antonio Travi
lit by a large crystal chandelier in the Louis XVI style
and so called because of the decorations that adorn it on all sides
The walls display a beautiful Coronation of the Virgin
a work from the second half of the 18th century
including a Lady with a parrot that has been likened to the manner of Giovanni Bernardo Carbone
and a portrait of Francesco Maria Centurione in chamber dress
made of sea or river stones and typical of the residences of Liguria (but also found in several squares in villages and cities)
one lingers in the lush and luxuriant park
although today it looks very different from how it must have appeared in the eyes of the Durazzo family
dates the creation of thecitrus grove that occupies the splendid terrace overlooking the sea and that welcomed
visitors who come to the villa coming up from the sea: orange
lemon and grapefruit trees are the plants that enliven this green corner
we owe to the Centurions the opening of the Italian-style garden that faces the villa
and which we imagine to be a favorite leisure area for the guests of thehotel that opened its doors right inside the building at the end of the 19th century
abetted by the election of Santa Margherita Ligure as a destination for sophisticated international tourism
the last member of the family that had uninterruptedly inhabited the villa up to that time
decided to give the mansion under management to the Maragliano family
active in the hotel business: thus opened the Grand Hotel of Santa Margherita Ligure
decided to sell the villa to the industrialist Alfredo Chierichetti
commissioned the painter Giovanni Fraschetti to restore the interiors that had been ruined since 1910 (the decorations of the Salotto delle Grottesche
and opened the romantic forest that today you can cross
if you decide to arrive at Villa Durazzo starting from Via Centurione
accompany visitors on their ascent to the villa
Three different declinations of the park that almost seem to emphasize the three different and distinct phases of the villa’s history
the year in which the City of Santa Margherita Ligure purchased Villa Durazzo from the Chierichetti family
The ancient residence of the nobles of seventeenth-century Genoa Superba was arranged and refurbished (the creation of the Vittorio Rossi Room mentioned above dates back to 1978)
and then opened to the public who love art and greenery (since 2005 it has been included in the Great Gardens circuit)
bearing witness to how this sumptuous residence is still alive today
as it was at the time when it hosted the receptions of the families who lived here in ancient times
Genoa’s project for the gradual transition to electric public transport goes ahead
Another important step towards green mobility was presented today with the introduction
of two electric buses on line 82 connecting Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino
This test is part of the project assigned by the Metropolitan City to AMT to study the electrification of the Rapallo – Portofino bus line
which will be carried out over the next two months
will make it possible to define the technical and functional characteristics of the vehicles and infrastructure in order to quantify and plan the necessary investments
The two electric buses in service on route 82 are Rampini 8-metre e-buses with a total of 46 seats
air conditioning and video surveillance cameras on board
In order to organize the e-bus service on line 82
it was necessary to carry out complex work at the AMT depot in Rapallo
The work carried out was preparatory to the creation of the charging infrastructure to power the e-buses; in particular
a new 100 kW power supply (compared to the previous 25 kW supply) was installed;

We're between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino
with the Monte di Portofino Park behind us and the waters of the Marine Protected Area in front

numerous structural investments have been made
as well as the renewal and expansion of kitchen spaces
including the addition of dishes prepared on live coals using the robata method," says Restaurant Manager Gianluca Penna.
dining just a meter from the sand or alternatively

There's so much Champagne to discover and enjoy (thank goodness)
Among the preparations by Executive Chef Antonio D’Ambrosio that we've tasted and particularly enjoyed are the flavorful and zesty start with the roasted scampi and yellow cherry tomato gazpacho (welcoming

The hazelnut and pistachio ice cream in conclusion wasn't noteworthy
but its pairing was: Barolo Chinato Cappellano

An Italian coastal community near Genoa no longer wants to see half-naked bathers near the beach
Anyone who leaves the beach in swimwear is threatened with trouble from the local authorities
On the beach of the fashionable Italian seaside resort of Santa Margherita Ligure
between the towns of Portofino and Rapallo
Holidaymakers loll under the parasols in their swimwear
Crystal-clear water invites you to jump into the cool water
Quite a few holidaymakers like to eat gelati or local snacks in their swimwear on the nearby promenade to satisfy their hunger on the beach
everything is normal - or so you might think
the freedom of movement ends just beyond the shore
it is now forbidden to walk around bare-chested in swimwear outside the beaches
Going topless on the promenade or in the alleyways of the village can be expensive
The municipality has decided to implement the wishes of its citizens
And they no longer want to see bathers in bikinis or swimming trunks in their little town
appropriate clothing must be worn when leaving the beach
Mayor Guglielmo Caversazio justifies the clothing requirement in the Italian media: "The only reason for the ban is to promote order and decency during the summer months."
this regulation is already being implemented in several seaside resorts
tourists who walk outside designated bathing areas in a bikini or swimsuit are fined up to 500 euros
The municipal authorities are also tightening the thumbscrews when it comes to their guests' liquid indulgence
the consumption of alcoholic beverages in public or publicly accessible places between 9 pm and 6 am will be prohibited
Even carrying alcoholic beverages in any kind of container is punishable during this time
The exact amount of the fine has not yet been determined
In the seaside resort of Lignano on the Italian Adriatic coast
bathers who do not comply with the alcohol ban are now fined up to 500 euros

When it comes to basking in the beauty of the Italian Riviera
But there's much more to this region on the Mediterranean coast than those famous five villages
A handful of charming towns lie within an hour of the Cinque Terre
with posh ports set against rugged mountain backdrops that have drawn poets
authors and romantics over the years from Lord Byron to Elizabeth Taylor
To the north of the Cinque Terre is a trio of beach towns: Levanto
the northern gateway to the Cinque Terre; Sestri Levante
stunningly situated on a narrow peninsula flanked by two beaches; and Santa Margherita Ligure
a thriving city with an active waterfront and easy connections to yacht-happy Portofino
At the south end of the Cinque Terre is the pretty resort of Porto Venere
When most people imagine the "Italian Riviera," they're thinking of the shimmering resort towns north of the Cinque Terre
Old World hotels looming over crowded pebble beaches
fastidiously landscaped parks and promenades are jammed with more Italian visitors than American tourists
These towns can be user-friendly home bases for day trips along the Riviera coast
but they're also worth visiting in their own right
After exploring the villages and trails of the Cinque Terre
they can feel like a return to civilization — for reasons both good and bad (modern amenities
just minutes north by train of the Cinque Terre resort town Monterosso
it's packed in summer with surfers and families
sleepy town with kids playing in the square and locals whizzing around on bicycles
level hike (or bike ride) to the sleepy village of Bonassola
Serious hikers can do the no-wimps-allowed hike to Monterosso
a charming town on a peninsula squeezed as skinny as a hot dog between two crescent beaches
One of the bays — Baia delle Favole — is named in honor of Hans Christian Andersen
who visited in the mid-1800s (favole means "fairy tale")
The most appealing town north of the Cinque Terre — but also the most distant (one hour by train) — is Santa Margherita Ligure
old-school resort town has an enjoyable urban bustle and a handful of sights (including the Baroque Basilica of Santa Margherita)
While Portofino's velour allure is tarnished by a nonstop traffic jam in peak season
Santa Margherita Ligure has a breezy harborfront with a beach promenade
and its aristocratic architecture hints at old money
but a boat makes the 15-minute trip with more class and scenery
either following the sidewalk along (and sometimes hanging over) the sea (2.5 miles)
or you can take a quieter two-hour hike high into the hills
Portofino is the movie star's Italian Riviera
The yacht-harbor resort with grand scenery — and its sleek jewelry shops
art galleries and haute couture boutiques filling a humble village shell — has the sheen of new money
It's the kind of place where the sailing masts are taller than the houses and church steeples
classic Italian architecture and wooded peninsula make Portofino an appealing destination nonetheless
More out of the way (and better as a day trip) is Porto Venere
This enchanting seafront village is perfect for a scenic boat or bus ride
An antidote to the gritty transportation hub of La Spezia just around the bay
this enchanting resort is as scenic as the Cinque Terre towns — but with a bit of glitz
skinny pastel facades rises up from an inviting harborfront promenade
especially if you climb up-up-up behind town for increasingly better views
Porto Venere faces not the open sea but the beautiful Gulf of La Spezia — more romantically known as the Gulf of Poets — where Lord Byron was said to have gone for a hardy swim despite rough seas and local warnings to the contrary
for a little while longer.) Scanning the bay
you'll see the outskirts of muscular La Spezia
the often-snow-covered peaks of the Apuan Alps
the resort town of Lerici and — across a narrow strait — the rugged island of Palmaria
choose one or more of these gems for a classic Italian Riviera experience

As far as many people in Italy are concerned
August 15th is the height of summer - and that in itself is worth celebrating
August 15th is when Catholics celebrate the Assumption
or the ascendance of the Virgin Mary into heaven
it was a holiday in Italy long before it took on a religious significance
comes from the Latin Feriae Augusti (the festivals of the Emperor Augustus) which were introduced back in 18 BC
and were celebrated alongside other ancient Roman summer festivals
These festivities were linked to the longer Augustali period – intended to be a period of rest after months of hard labour
Siena's Palio dell'Assunta usually takes place on August 16th
The holiday now combines both its ancient Roman and Catholic roots with marking the semi-official peak of Italy's summer holiday season
It’s traditional to use the August long weekend to take a trip out of the city
so if you stay in town you'll notice it's much quieter than usual
the regime would organise trips with special offers for the 13th-15th August
the idea being that less well-off workers would get the opportunity to visit a different part of the country
Even today there are often discounts on packages for the Ferragosto weekend – though you may find that train tickets and hotel rooms sell out fast
many Italian families go away on longer vacations at this time of year too
If you didn’t have the foresight to book a trip of your own
you may be wondering how to make the most of the day
bank holidays mean total shutdown even in major towns and cities
with everything from post offices to public transport closed
And as we mentioned earlier it's the start of Italy's holiday season
meaning you'll see 'chiuso per ferie' signs popping up all over the place
on Ferragosto a large number of museums and cultural sites remain open
So it’s an excellent time to visit major attractions such as the Colosseum
Pantheon or Galleria Borghese if you’re in the capital
or one of the many museums and sites across the rest of Italy
Ferragosto is also usually celebrated with special church services and religious processions
as well as fireworks displays and other events
While these were cancelled over the precious two summers due to Covid-19
events and gatherings can go ahead restriction-free this year
But the most traditional way to celebrate of all is with a big family lunch
you'll see many restaurants remain open on this date
and may even offer special Ferragosto menus for the occasion

Before an intimate gathering of their closest friends and family, just as they had wished, Rod Stewart and his long-term love Penny Lancaster became man and wife this weekend
The nuptials took place on the Italian Riviera
where the couple held a civil ceremony in Santa Margherita Ligure
just outside the exclusive resort of Portofino
followed by an evening service at La Cervara Abbey
arrived for the morning ceremony in the 17th-century Villa Durazzo showing off the endless set of pins Rod so admires in a curve-skimming white satin mini-dress
The model's long blonde tresses flowed free about her shoulders

Plans to guarantee a higher quality of beach services in Italy at regulated prices got the green light on Monday
with unanimous approval of a draft law on the future of coastal tourism
Lidos and other businesses occupying beaches will be more tightly regulated under new rules, according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera
with tighter criteria on everything from ease of access for the disabled to environmental impact
is also expected to be capped according to the draft proposal
READ ALSO: Private lidos take up more than 40 percent of Italian beaches: report
New rules will promote “a fair ratio between rates and quality of service for everyone, including for the disabled,” reports the Ansa news agency
though no further information was immediately available about how prices may change
The proposal came after consumer watchdogs correctly predicted that lidos would hike their prices in 2021 to make up for losses and cover extra costs related to the Covid-19 pandemic
Research by consumer study institute IRCAF found that June 2021 prices to rent two loungers and an umbrella ranged from €10 per day on some Italian beaches to a staggering €50 on others
The draft law includes new rules intended to prevent the monopolisation of large swathes of sandy areas and free up Italy's increasingly privatised beaches
It envisages "an adequate balance between state-owned areas and free or equipped free areas"
There will be a new limit on how many lidos each individual can own
and a requirement for future lido owners to ensure free access to the beach
A report by environmental association Legambiente last year warned that it’s getting harder to find a spot to sunbathe for free
as nearly 43 percent of Italy’s sandy beaches are now occupied by private lidos
In some parts of Italy as much as 70 percent of sandy coast is taken up by lidos and other concessions
the stretch of the Adriatic Coast around Rimini
is now almost impossible to access for free with 90 percent of beaches in Rimini in private hands and 100 percent in Gatteo
tenders will reportedly open for those hoping to run lidos on Italy's beaches based on new criteria
including micro-businesses and third-sector organisations
Those who have had this type of business as their only source of income in the previous five years will be given first right of refusal in the tenders
The plans are expected to be passed into law within the next six months
Popular TikTok creator Victoria Elena has shared an alternative Italian holiday destination to Positano that you need to know: Santa Margherita Ligure
As The Instagram Hordes stomp all over Amalfi and shirtless heathens strut their stuff in Sorrento (to the point where the town has banned bikinis after a moral panic over the “macabre procession” of tourists)
there is a quieter part of Italy still waiting to be discovered (or as the case may be
desperately hoping it isn’t discovered…) That town
This revelation was lugged at our noggins by TikTok user Victoria Elena. Victoria, who says she is an “Italian in London,” began her video (which has been viewed 1.4 million times) by explaining that she believes Positano
She says that she would instead choose to go to Portofino – but there’s a catch
WATCH: The Quieter Alternative To Positano AND Portofino
Rather than staying in Portofino – which is becoming overcrowded and expensive too – Victoria says you should stay at a town nearby to Portofino
and walk ‘the red carpet’ (a coastal path built for getting between towns) to eat and drink in Portofino
before returning to your cheaper and more relaxed town to sleep
“If you’re thinking of going to Italy these are the overhyped places to go in Italy and where I would go instead,” Victoria said
“Tiny disclaimer,” she adds; “they’re not actually overhyped – obviously they are beautiful – but they are just so full of tourists the prices have become crazy
The locals don’t enjoy them anymore and if you go in peak season it’s going to become so crowded and crazy; you’re probably not going to have fun.”
“It’s a beautiful location on the Amalfi Coast
where I actually wouldn’t stay specifically here
I would stay further down the coast in Santa Margherita or Rapallo or even further.”
which means that if you’re in one of the neighbouring towns
you can actually walk down the red carpet all the way to Portofino to have your dinner
drinks or your aperetivo and then you can just walk back.”
“I do this all the time and everyone does it
you can do it at night and overall you can enjoy the view but you can stay a bit further out
TikTok users commented things like “tourists trying to avoid tourists is the funniest thing to me” and “I find Portofino waaay more overhyped than Positano
Also the food in Positano is one step ahead.”
Another remark was: “I was in Positano in February a couple of years ago and it was magical
beautiful light.” Victoria responded: “Totally agree out of season is the time to go.”
Others pointed out you might be better off getting a bus
as it’s a fair old walk from Santa Margherita or Rapallo to Portofino (it’s 19 minutes by car)
Other useful information shared in the comments included the fact that you can get a ferry from Rapallo to neighbouring places “and it’s way quicker then the walk!!” (to which Victoria replied: “Trueeee but 💵”) and that the walk from Santa Margherita to Portofino takes “+30 mins,” (according to Victoria)
Images on Instagram show a multitude of tourists living their best lives in and around the Portofino region
with many visiting Santa Margherita and Rapallo as well
It appears if your goal is to lounge about drinking
you can easily do that in all three places – there’s no need to stay in Portofino just because it’s famous (unless you really want to and are prepared to pay more for the convenience)
Victoria has also commented: “Canceling this video now that the Kardashians are there.” So it appears America’s most famous family has at some point visited
there’s always something around that next bend…
