On the overall technical level the Lucchese It is certainly superior to the Sestri Levante, especially the one revised and corrected, first during the transfer market by the company and, then, tactically by Gorgon. But when permanence among the professionals is at stake, certain values are reset and leave room for the ability to always stay in the game, without drops in tension, in addition, obviously, to taking advantage of the greater level of experience.
This is why, in essence, Saturday's match in Liguria hides objective pitfalls for the Rossoneri who will have to be ready to respond blow for blow to the… assaults that the "corsairs" will bring towards Melgrati's goal, with a view to gaining victory and facing the return match at the "Porta Elisa", seven days later, with a different spirit.
The long break between the end of the championship and the beginning of the play-out allowed Gorgon to recover all the players and therefore be able to make well-considered choices. One thing is certain: the men from Ruvo will have the support of 1500 of their own supporters, as many as the "Sivori" can contain. On the other hand, the sector reserved for guests will remain deserted due to the well-known measures taken by Ministry of the Interior. Let's hope this will be useful for the future…
Meanwhile, the "C" series, often forgotten by the spotlight, is writing a historic page today: for the first time a referee will play the role of AVAR (Assistant VAR) during the play-offs and play-out.
Alex Jimenez of Milan Futuro during a match against Sestri Levante in Serie C (Image credit: acmilan.com)
The Milan Futuro team secured a very important victory on Saturday, away at Sestri Levante
a direct opponent in the battle for survival
The Rossoneri fielded Alex Jimenez as a starter
as the full-back was suspended with the first team
"Jimenez can play in Serie C while he’s suspended in Serie A
who was suspended earlier in the season when he was on the bench of a Serie D team
had to serve his two-match ban in Serie C and couldn’t lead us from the field against Campobasso and Ternana
What’s happening with Lucchese is unbelievable: players and coaches haven’t seen a penny in five months
three ownership changes from January to today
The latest arrival has a history of failed attempts at saving teams in Catania and Latina
My club receives compliments from the Covisoc inspectors for how we follow financial regulations
when it was already clear that the club was financially in ruins
was allowed to conduct a transfer market and sign ten new players

The first time was in the 2002-2003 season, under the guidance of Aldo Grassi and co-president Emilio Gioia, with Mario Donatelli as "diesse", first D'Arrigo and then Jaconi as coach, Bruno Russo as "vice", professor Alessandro Bianchi as head of public relations, Mario Santoro as head of marketing, professor Enrico Castellacci as social doctor, Franco Luporini as head of the youth sector.
To avoid this drift, there will be only one way: to show up with the millions needed (3 to 4) in front of the bankruptcy judge, in mid-May, when the preliminary hearing has been set, and take over the company. But, apparently, there is a very specific condition that would have been set by a new buyer who is said to have already had preliminary contacts with the municipal administration, in the person of the Sports Councilor, Fabio Barsanti: the permanence of the team in the "Pro" League.
To achieve the goal, Lucchese must, however, deal with Sestri Levante in the double challenge: the first in Liguria, scheduled for Saturday 10 May; the second at "Porta Elisa", Saturday 17 May, both at 20:XNUMX. To best prepare for the play-outs, the team, which has enjoyed a few days of rest, will resume training next Friday.
Finally, let's remember that, to maintain the category, Lucchese could also need two draws or a victory and a defeat with the same score, having classified better in the "regular season" than the "corsairs".

Alex Jimenez complaints after playing in Serie C while suspended: ‘Does it seem fair?’ | OneFootballFootball Italia
The President of Serie C outfit Sestri Levante has questioned the fact that Alex Jimenez was able to play for the Milan Futuro side over the weekend while he was suspended in Serie A
As his suspension was competition-specific, the Spaniard was still allowed to play for the affiliated Milan Futuro side in Serie C. The Milan ‘reserve’ team are enduring a tough start to life in the senior leagues in what is their maiden campaign
and are still at risk of relegation at the end of the 2024-25 campaign
Milan Futuro currently sit in 17th place in their Serie C table
although they were in 18th prior to the weekend
They are now up to 30 points after a 2-1 victory over Sestri Levante, a game in which Jimenez, who already has 15 Serie A appearances this season
Rafael Leao and Alex Jimenez are pictured talking during the Serie A match against Verona at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on February 15
The fact that the 19-year-old was eligible to play despite being suspended in Serie A has caused frustration among Sestri Levante officials, as Milan Futuro are a direct rival in the scrap to avoid relegation from Serie C
Club President Stefano Risaliti was particularly frustrated
as Sestri Levante’s head coach Alberto Ruvo had to serve a suspension during his first-two games in charge due to a punishment he earned while with his former club Fezzanese in Serie D
“Jimenez can play in Serie C while suspended in Serie A
who had been given a suspension at the beginning of the season while with a Serie D club
had to serve it during the first two games in Serie C and could not lead us against Campobasso or Ternana
“Does it seem fair to you?,” Risaliti asked after Milan Futuro beat Sestri Levante 2-1 in a relegation six-pointed over the weekend

Global Navigation Satellite Systems Engineering
European navigators commemorated the 90th anniversary of Guglielmo Marconi’s first demonstration of microwave-guided navigation
the historic vessel Leudo performed a blind navigation maneuver
guided by radio impulses transmitted from the shore
a reenactment of radio pioneer Marconi’s demonstration of 30 July 1934
Among participants at this year’s event was European Space Agency (ESA) Head of FutureNAV Marco Falcone
who described in a highly appreciated presentation the innovative character of Marconi’s work
Falcone traced the evolution of navigation over the past 90 years
drawing a line from Marconi to today’s GNSS systems
now capable of delivering decimeter-level precision navigation signals via satellites orbiting at 23,000 km above the Earth
Falcone was joined by engineers and technicians
all brought together by the Radio Amateurs of Sestri Levante and the Tigullio Torre Marconi Association (TTM)
Some attendees watched the demonstration via live video link
with commentary by Professor Sergio Audano
The first demonstration of a blind navigation system was conducted by Marconi on 30 July 1934
observed by numerous experts and representatives of Lloyd’s of London
which would guide ships and planes in conditions of poor visibility for decades and would only be supplanted by modern GNSS
An impartial English captain steered Elettra between two buoys anchored at a dis-tance of 90 meters and 800 meters from the shore
with the radio beacon set up on a nearby promontory
Marconi’s beacon consisted of two parabolic reflectors with their respective horizontal illuminators
fed in phase op-position by a common transmitter
operating at a frequency of 500 MHz (wavelength of 60 cm)
an instrument with a moving needle indicator showed whether the vessel was proceeding to the left or right of the assigned course
The beacon also generated an acoustic signal that could be used to help keep the boat on course
which reconstituted all of the essential elements of Marconi’s experiment
ESA’s Falcone thanked to the Radio Amateurs of Sestri Levante and the TTM
acknowledging their exemplary radio communication and marine navigation skills
“Viva Marconi e Viva Sestri Levante,” to the great delight of the assembly

i rossoneri sono stati raggiunti sul 2-2 finale da Durmush e Parravicini nel match valido per la 16ª giornata di Serie C

"Even with a ball of rags you can work miracles," writes the Football Federation. "Jorge Mario Bergoglio said this during a private audience with the national team in 2019, talking about his passion for football."
"The Italian football shares with emotion the pain of hundreds of millions of people for the painful passing of His Holiness Pope Francis – the words of Gabriele Gravina, president of the FIGC –. A great example of Christian charity and dignity in suffering, he always showed himself attentive to the world of sport and football in particular, of which he was passionate".
"His human and spiritual closeness to the sick, the poor and the persecuted across the planet was his deepest testimony, a beacon that will illuminate generations to come. He will remain forever in our hearts as faithful and true lovers of the game of football."
It was a real mockery for the 105 brave Juventus supporters who had already set out early in the morning to reach Sestri Levante, where they would support their Picchio favourites from the away sector.
When many had almost arrived at their destination, they learned of the postponement wanted by the FIGC. The about-face with the simultaneous return home was therefore inevitable.
But, first of all, there is a team that must be thanked for having played until the end, despite having been in "self-management" for several months and that, without the penalty, could have fought for a place in the play-offs, in light of its extraordinary second half of the season (27 points against the 18 of the first half of the season).
Here is the complete "grid", remembering that whoever had the best placing in the standings at the end of the "regular season" will play the return match at home and will have two results out of three available. In essence the Lucchese would be safe even with two draws or with a win and a defeat with the same score. Therefore, on Saturday 10 May, Sestri Levante-Lucchese and Milan Futuro-Spal will be played. The start time should be 16.30:XNUMX, even if it is not yet official.
The Rossoneri team will not be able to count on the support of their fans during the trip to Liguria following the decision of the Minister of the Interior who banned the travel of supporters from Lucca and Perugia for four months, following the brawl that occurred last February near the Versilia service area.
On Sunday 4th May, instead, the first round of the play-offs will start (remember that this is a single match and that, in the event of a tie, the best placed team in the championship, i.e. the team playing at home, will advance to the next round) with these matches: Arezzo-Gubbio, Vis Pesaro-Pontedera and Pineto-Pianese.
As already highlighted, the former Juventus player will be eligible again Clemenza who scored in the first leg match lost 4-1 at the Del Duca.
This year the most embarrassing page in the history of the Bianconeri has been written and nothing can be saved from a championship like this. Mister knows it well Mimmo DiCarlo returned to the bedside of a team fighting to avoid relegation after being sacked with a post on social media. Others would have given up, but he believed in this salvation and point after point he brought the black and white raft to port.

Ascoli draws with Sestri Levante and achieves salvation at the end of what will remain in the annals as one of the worst seasons ever. At Sivori, the Bianconeri settle for a dull 0-0 to take home the point needed to mathematically maintain their category. On the field, a lively match takes place, but is extremely sterile in terms of emotions and goal opportunities.
The Bianconeri are not particularly cynical in the last thirty meters. At half an hour of the first half Curado risks a lot with an excessively high elbow that hits Pavanello.
In front there will be the Sestri Levante, a team still in the running to avoid direct relegation and try the play-offs. "I expect a complicated match - he continues -. Sestri will play it all, they are a difficult team to face, they show a lot of desire. Entella struggled against them in the first half, they closed all the spaces. It will take a lot of patience, we will have to try to take advantage of the opportunities that will arise".
A few hours before the relegation clash Sestri Levante - Ascoli, the Roman entrepreneur Massimo Pulcinelli he has returned to generate reactions from the fans with a statement capable of going in the opposite direction to what had previously been expressed in recent months. "TheAscoli Soccer is no longer for sale. Happy Easter to all" could be read in one of his classic social 'rants'.

Sestri Levante is found approximately halfway between Genoa and La Spezia
Italy’s five beautiful Cinque Terre villages were awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status in recognition of their rugged and remote coastal location and traditional way of life
But the secret was out – these once peaceful and idyllic villages soon saw a rapid influx of visitors from around the world
filling their narrow streets and dinky harbours with thousands upon thousands of tourists each day
Nowadays, if you’re looking for an unspoiled idyll on the Italian Riviera you’re better off looking elsewhere, but you don’t have to venture far. This article features five beautiful villages in the immediate vicinity of the Cinque Terre that haven’t been ravaged by overtourism
Just few kilometres further down the coast, Porto Venere is the closest thing to a sixth Cinque Terre village
Unesco included it as part of the World Heritage Site
and it shares many of the qualities that make the Cinque Terre so attractive
including pastel-coloured waterfront houses and a picturesque seaside location
Originally founded by the Romans, Porto Venere has an impressive location at the end of a promontory, with the Cinque Terre coast on one side and the bay of La Spezia on the other. The village is heavily fortified, topped by the Castello Doria fortress and flanked by watchtowers
Even the multicoloured seafront tower-houses once formed an enormous defensive wall several stories high
You might also like this: Italy's fabulous five: planning your visit to the Cinque Terre
Getting there: Porto Venere has no train connection
but you can catch buses and boats from La Spezia
Standing beside Tellaro’s harbour it’s easy to imagine that a little piece of the Cinque Terre broke off and floated down the coast, before becoming lodged here in the Bay of Poets
As Tellaro is still pretty much off the tourist trail
wandering its maze of little streets is a great way to get a feel for what visiting the Cinque Terre would have been like before the international hordes descended
alerting the village’s inhabitants to an impending pirate attack
Getting there: You’ll need your own wheels to reach Tellaro
If even Tellaro isn’t far enough off the tourist trail for your liking
then venture a few kilometres further to Montemarcello
it has spectacular views in all directions of the Bay of the Poets
the Magra River valley and the marble mountains of Carrara
it’s the perfect place to nurse a coffee on a small outside table and take deep
heady breaths while you contemplate the way the cafe’s dark green shutters contrast with its peeling coral-orange paintwork
and also connect Montemarcello with Tellaro on the coast below
Getting there: A few kilometres further on from Tellaro
you’ll also need a car to reach Montemarcello
and more a collection of tiny hamlets tumbling down the hillside towards the sea
fairytale quality – seemingly frozen in time by a mystical spell
Crumbling palaces adorned with decorative sculpture and frescoes are draped in cascades of purple wisteria
The delicate scent of the wisteria blows on the breeze
Each of the three main settlements – Costa
Setta and Anzo – boasts a picturesque collection of watchtowers
If you’re up for an adventure then getting here can be half the fun
An old railway track that connected Framura with Levanto has been converted into a 5km-long trail for pedestrians and cyclists
Much of the flat route runs through historic tunnels
with occasional arched openings providing breathtaking glimpses of the sea
the trail emerges in the pretty seaside town of Bonassola
which has a long sandy beach and plenty of cafes and gelaterias that are perfect for a refreshment break
The roads that lead up into the hamlets of Framura are quite steep
so if you don’t fancy a workout it’s a good idea to hire an e-bike
or leave your bike at the bottom and stroll up
Getting there: Framura station is on the train line between La Spezia and Sestri Levante
catch the train to Levanto and hire a bike from there
Dramatically poised on a peninsula halfway along the coast between the Cinque Terre and Genoa
Sestri Levante has a wonderfully refined air
its pastel-coloured villas and palaces ornamented with trompe l’oeil architectural features
Each side of the spit is flanked by golden sands
and at the tip of the peninsula a storybook castle crowns a craggy outcrop that was once an island
The two beaches are completely different in character: Baia delle Favole to the north is a long
whilst Baia del Silenzio is a perfect dinky cove on the other side
Getting there: Sestri Levante station is on the train line between Genoa and La Spezia, with frequent services.

Flower Riviera
Palms Riviera
Genoa and surroundings
Portofino and the Tigullio
The Cinque Terre
Gulf of Poets
including Treks or simple excursions in the sun
Here are some ideas for your winter walks in Liguria
a limestone wall over 100 meters high in whose recesses
thousands of years ago during the Paleolithic era
All archaeological evidence is in the nearby Prehistoric Museum of Balzi Rossi
You continue on a nice dirt road that runs alongside the railway until the Dogana Gallery
a path leads to the ancient Via Julia Augusta
a botanical garden built by Sir Thomas Hanbury
with about six thousand plants from all over the world
The ancient roads that once connected various villages are now extraordinary places to appreciate the panorama of Liguria. The road between Pompeiana and Cipressa is one of these
It can become a true trekking experience due to its length (approximately 9 km) and its characteristics (elevation gain)
from a road on the left just before the village
Once you reach the rock church of San Salvatore (more athletic individuals can climb on foot or by bike
it’s a good starting point to leave the car)
you immediately have a beautiful panorama of the coast
you can see the entire arc of Liguria and even Corsica
a hilly area that affects the territories of the municipalities of Pompeiana
as it is an ideal habitat for animal and plant species that are quite rare today
with numerous sets of benches and tables for a picnic in the azure
you reach the ancient tower of Gallinaro overlooking the village of Cipressa
Nature, history, prehistory, art, colours: in this loop path, you will find a bit of everything. To reach it, you will have to climb (by car, bike, on foot) to Verezzi
one of the most beautiful villages in Italy
an approximately eight-kilometer itinerary starts
Climbing from the level crossing of Borgio
the quarries of Verezzi stone with which the village was built
the path continues among the holm oaks to the ancient Phoenician mill
This is the highest point of the route (at 285 m above sea level) from which you can observe the settlement of Borgio and all the fractions of Verezzi
Then you descend passing through the castellaro area
named after the nearby presence of an Iron Age hill fort
on the edges of fields once cultivated with almond trees
you reach Crosa and subsequently Verezzi with the famous Piazza S
The magnificent landscape of the locally protected natural area ‘Parco delle Mura’ derives its name from the New Walls
erected in the seventeenth century to defend the city and represents
built between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries
are now natural conservation areas where some protected animal and plant species live because they are rare or endemic
You will discover that there is a Genoa by the sea and a Vertical Genoa
use the Righi funicular: from the terminus
continue towards Forts Castellaccio and Sperone
you already enjoy a stunning view of Genoa
Continue towards the nineteenth-century Fort Begato
or with the variant towards the interior for the small Fort Puin
you can find interesting ideas for your walks
From an ancient castle by the sea to the symbol of elegance and refinement
stringing together one after another the extraordinary pearls of the Gulf of Tigullio: Rapallo
an 8 km walk completely overlooking the sea
touching places now ingrained in the collective imagination
located on the Riviera di Levante on the Portofino Promontory
until reaching the characteristic square of Portofino frequented by the world’s jet set
Those who still want to walk can continue to Castello Brown and then further towards the lighthouse
Pure Mediterranean charm between the sea and the coastal vegetation, interspersed with the darkness of the tunnels: the cycle path between Levanto and Framura was once reserved for the train that wound its way like a caterpillar through the hills of the eastern coast
is completely flat and can be walked or cycled
It starts above the Porticciolo of Framura
and reaches Levanto in the Valle Santa area
You walk between large open spaces overlooking the sea where you can access coves waiting to be discovered
a rock wall has recently been equipped for climbing enthusiasts
The path to the left after the last tunnel before Bonassola is beautiful and wild
Don’t miss the walk towards Madonna della Punta as well
The 28 kilometres of the Flower Riviera Coastal Park bike path
starting from Imperia to San Lorenzo al Mare and reaching Ospedaletti
It’s challenging to find such beautiful routes in Italy and even in Europe
many foreigners come to the Ponente Ligure to ride it
The bike path is built on the former train route
making it completely flat and suitable for walking in its main sections
San Lorenzo al Mare is a small village protected by the mountains
Riva Ligure is a typical Ligurian village clinging to the coast and touched by the azure waters of the sea
Arma di Taggia is a cheerful holiday resort that smiles even in winter
Sanremo needs no introduction: the path is a stone’s throw from the Casino and the Imperatrice promenade
Ospedaletti already has a touch of Provence

At the Third International Congress of Human Genetics in Chicago in September 1966 a group of human geneticists from Europe met and agreed that there should be a European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG)
as reviewed elsewhere in this issue by Peter S Harper
As two of us (EP and AdlC) attended the discussion in 1966 and all three were involved subsequently in the early development of the ESHG we would like to add a few comments
Following its first annual meeting in 1967 in Copenhagen
the ESHG held meetings each year in various European cities arranged by different colleagues as local hosts
but not yet organised as a scientific society comparable to the American Society of Human Genetics
contacted one of us (EP) in 1987 and suggested that he should take over as secretary-general in due time
Such a change appeared to be a good opportunity to make the ESHG more democratic and inclusive by electing a board (president
secretary-general) and a programme committee
Supported by Peter Harper at the 1988 Cardiff meeting
the newly elected board took office in 1989 at the meeting in Groningen organised by Charles Buys (once again described by Peter Harper)
All this happened at a time when Europe was going through great political changes—namely the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989
which led to the unification of East and West Germany in 1990
and the signing of major European treaties
It was a time of great enthusiasm and popular approval for the idea of building the European Union (EU) and implementing reforms
which for the first time in our history were being accomplished through peace and diplomacy
as evidenced by the universal acceptance and recognition of the Society’s role in medicine and genetics
The success of the ESHG today is also shown by its excellent annual meetings under the guidance of its programme committee
and by its Journal that serves to unite geneticists from all over Europe and to let the rest of the world know what is happening in Europe
The three authors of this review were actively involved in the transformation of the ESHG from a somewhat loosely organized association to a well-organised scientific society in the late 1980s and early 1990s
AdlC and GR served as presidents during that period
all elected by the membership assembly at annual meetings
During his Presidency GR founded the Journal
Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences

View image in fullscreenWarm summer lingers in Šibenik on the Adriatic
Photograph: Zoonar/AlamySummer lingers longer in the Adriatic
where the water retains its heat until well into October (and often November)
If you want to combine beach with culture – and some spectacular nature on its doorstep – Šibenik is the place for a final fling of summer
this beautiful Dalmatian city halfway between Zadar and Split has so much going for it
and it doesn’t go into full winter hibernation like much of coastal Croatia
There’s the magnificent Unesco-listed Cathedral of St James
an attractive pebbly beach with views of the city
a delightful Venetian old town full of winding marble lanes and restaurants squeezed into tiny squares
Get a blast of sea air along the Riva waterfront lined with cafe terraces and boats (but no cruise ships – they can’t get through the narrow channel that leads to the city)
Head uphill to the three restored 16th-century Venetian fortresses – St John
St Michael and Barone – or hike the three-mile trail along St Anthony’s Channel to the Unesco-listed ruins of St Nicholas fortress
Šibenik is also the jumping-off point for two of Croatia’s national parks – the waterfalls of Krka and Kornati’s compellingly barren islands
Where to stay Armerun Heritage Hotel & Residence has 21 stylish rooms and apartments in a former Dominican monastery by the waterfront
Doubles from €177 B&B in September/€112 in October
Getting there Overland journeys from the UK take at least 26 hours and include the Eurostar to Brussels and trains to Munich
View image in fullscreenArcachon is renowned for its seafood restaurants
Photograph: Gareth Sewell/AlamyOyster aficionados know that autumn is usually the best season to experience this delicacy
It also happens to be one of the best times to travel to Arcachon
one of the major centres for oyster cultivation on France’s Atlantic coast
The Bassin d’Arcachon is a large sheltered bay which often enjoys balmy temperatures into October
In high summer the small fishing villages on the bay are delightful with their cabanes à huîtres (oyster huts) where you can dine on the freshest seafood with your toes in the sand
But in autumn the town of Arcachon is a better option
delicious seafood and beautiful Belle Epoque architecture
Arcachon is the perfect jumping off point for bike rides into the Landes forest or along the bay to see the 110m high Dune du Pilat
Europe’s tallest sand dune is crawling with tourists
but in September and October you can soak up the stunning views and sunsets without the crowds
Where to stay Hotel de la Plage has attractive pine-clad rooms
and is close to the train station and beach
Doubles from £130 a night in September/£94 a night in October

Sestri Levante only lives up to its name in the off-season

Beach weather lasts into October, but some days may also be cool enough to enjoy a panoramic walk from the old town around the Punta Manara peninsula. The honeypot towns of the Cinque Terre are half an hour away by train. A few minutes’ walk inland, Ca’ di Ferae does innovative cooking with traditional ingredients in an untouristy setting
and some of the best vegetarian food in the area

the heat and crowds which descend on the Costa Brava each summer have dissipated
but the sea is still warm enough for swimming in the sheltered coves and cooler days lend themselves to hikes or bike rides in the rugged hills of the Baix Empordà
The two main entry points for travellers are Girona and Barcelona
Public transport to some parts of the coast can be sketchy so choose your destination wisely
the towns of Palafrugell and Begur are both served by regular buses from Girona (approx 1hr 20min) and are great jumping off points for exploring the local beaches

The bow of the latter is being built in Muggiano to later join the rest of the vessel.”Before we can understand how two parts of a vessel are joined
it is useful to remember how the blocks are assembled together in what are called sections
Each block is formed by cutting sheets 12.5 meters long and 2.5 meters wide
Cranes are required to move and put it into position—either vertically or horizontally—for the assembly of the hull and the external structure of the vessel
the cranes end up lifting 140 tons when used in pairs due to the increasing weight of the blocks under construction."The blocks which form the hull are then set up during the subsequent stages of production," added Paola Riva
“This means that all the internal equipment is installed: pipes
including those for propulsion and the furnishings
A structure is formed that can accommodate about 170 people
and it’s capable of generating electricity as well as being seaworthy.”The barges and floating docks are built next
The barge is a floating platform that can be towed out to sea
are transferred to the barge using trolleys
Eventually they are moved (or added) to the rest of a vessel under construction
The distances are relatively small in the case of the two shipyards along this stretch of the Ligurian coast
but people who work for Fincantieri will tell you about transfers on barges towed for hundreds of nautical miles: from Muggiano to Castellamare di Stabia (Naples)
for example. The vessel is moved by the barge to the floating dock
where it is finally launched: the dock is flooded and the vessel is put to sea
outfitting is completed with tests and inspections on the vessel while it is moored to the quay (before delivery to the customer). The way the team at Fincantieri makes handling the floating and navigable buildings simple! The installation of the turbine module is one of the steps of construction for the vessel. The GE LM2500+G4 Marine Gas Turbine is built and tested by GE at their Cincinnati
Ohio facility and then shipped to Fincantieri where it is installed into the Avio Aero Base and Enclosure
The Avio Aero thermal/acoustic enclosure is based upon the design of the GE LM2500+ Base and Enclosure installed aboard the US Navy’s LHD-8 Amphibious Assault Ship. Avio Aero technicians—like Giuseppe Cosi and Antonio Rutigliano
who installed the first turbine on the first PPA—are also responsible for the service life of the turbine and its maintenance.Avio Aero technicians are also responsible for the service life of the turbine and its maintenance.“I have had to work on all sorts of military aircraft engines during my career," said Giuseppe
who is a member of the service team in Brindisi
I have worked with these gas turbines and mainly in the naval field
and it is perhaps for this reason I find working with this kind of engine particularly stimulating
Operations can take anywhere from a week to several months.”The LM2500+G4 turbine in fact can deliver a maximum power of 35MW
able to drive the PPA at over 30 knots (almost 60Km/h) in combination with the rest of the engine
which also includes two 10MW diesel engines and two electric motors powered by the four generators that supply energy to the other on-board users."The LM2500+G4 installed on the PPA is an advanced turbine that allows GE Marine and Avio Aero to meet the high-performance needs of our customers
reliable and seaworthy is the key to success—even during the concept design phase
a phase that sees our teams working in tandem,” said Enrico Ferrari
Head of Design of Engine Equipment and Auxiliary Equipment for the Naval Division. Before the production stage
which can take 22 to 24 months for a vessel of this size
which considers the main needs of the customer
involves the most painstaking work and can take up much more time than production

the PPA sets an unprecedented feature into the partnership between the naval industry with Avio Aero and GE Marine
“The turbine module involved a joint effort," explained Pierpaolo Berardi
the Program Manager of Avio Aero responsible for collaboration during the phase of delivery of the first module
"We worked with the engineers of Fincantieri
pooled our skills and gave the staff specific training.”Fincantieri's Propulsion Module Project Engineer
“This new collaboration has definitely strengthened our relationship
with our Mechanical Systems and Components Management department,” he said.In fact
by collaborating with Avio Aero’s engineers
Fincantieri procured all the components of the propulsion system
prepared the internal assembly instructions and physically assembled the components of the turbine module.According to Trucco
"we have gained better understanding of the operation and characteristics of the components of the turbine
and acquired know-how for the integration of a complex module on-board a vessel
All this joint work will allow us to offer customers new options in the future.”Since foreign navies are showing more than just mild curiosity in the patrol vessels and their propulsion systems
we can safely say that adventures at sea on board these giants are bound to reach many shores and horizons

This illustrated talk will examine the historical significance of Edward Lear's drawings in and around the small town of Sestri Levante
Lear’s trip in this region came at a significant point in his life in May 1860
as he had just left Rome for the final time
Although he considered publishing a journal as he had done for his trips to Albania and Calabria
this Ligurian trip has barely been mentioned by his numerous biographers
The drawings he made show this part of the Italian Riviera before it was changed by the railway
They provide a coherent record of this part of the coast
seen by one man between 14 and 23 May 1860
Lear’s work can be compared with earlier and later artistic representations

The long-awaited, much-needed consolidation of Europe's fragmented naval industry — which some believe could one day lead to a 'Naval Airbus' — may be about to take its first step with the planned acquisition of France's Saint-Nazaire yard by Italy's Fincantieri.
The irony is that if the naval business is about to finally consolidate, in the wake of steps taken by the land and air sectors, it would be less due to years of urging from analysts and managers, and more due to a big shove given by the luxury cruise ship industry, not to mention the bankruptcy of a Korean ship builder.
Fincantieri — Italy's biggest naval ship manufacturer — is on course to take control this year from Korea's STX of Saint-Nazaire, which recently built two Mistral helicopter carriers destined for Russia and later sold to Egypt, and is the only yard in continental Europe large enough to build an aircraft carrier.
The deal would be a coup for Fincantieri's veteran CEO Giuseppe Bono, who said last year, "We must work together — Today there is competition between European firms but the competition should be between European firms and the rest of the world."
Bono has pointed out how three European yards, Navantia, BAE and Fincantieri, are currently competing to sell frigates to Australia.
Adm. Matteo Bisceglie, Italy's head of naval procurement, agreed, telling Defense News last week, "Industry cooperation in Europe, which is missing today, is the best way to sell naval and civil vessels to the world."
Both Bono and Bisceglie were present in Rome in September at the presentation of a research paper which claimed European navies today cannot afford to build more than eight or ten frigates at a time. If firms teamed up, it argued, following the example of Airbus, as well as Germany's KMW and France's Nexter in the land sector, prices for ships would go down and more could be built.
The Centro Studi Internazionali, which published the research paper, said consolidation would be welcome news for the half-million employees of Europe's shipyards.
Fincantieri's Bono has been talking up European aggregation for years, and pushed hard for a European buy-out when the shipbuilding activity of Norway's Aker came up for sale in 2008. To his chagrin, Korea's STX was cleared for the purchase, although he was able to then buy the business from STX in 2012.
When STX went bankrupt last year, Bono got in line again, becoming the preferred bidder earlier this month to buy out a 66.66 percent stake in the business unit STX France, the owner of the Saint-Nazaire yard. The remainder is controlled by the French government.
Saint-Nazaire may build warships, but Bono's prime objective is taking over the yard's bulging, 12 billion Euro order book for luxury cruise ships — a line of business which is also currently thriving at Fincantieri.
The Italian yard is doing well out of a recent 5.4 billion Euro order for new navy vessels from the Italian government, but it also has 26 cruise ships on order, over one-third of the 73 ships now on order around the world.
"The European cruise industry has been in the hands of three firms — Fincantieri, STX and Germany's Meyer Werft, so this merger would reduce the field as huge investments are being made and the sector is going really well," said Nicola Capuzzo, a reporter at Italian shipping industry publication Ship2Shore.
"If military consolidation flows from the Saint-Nazaire deal, it will be thanks to consolidation in the cruise ship industry," he added.
"Saint-Nazaire is the only yard in Europe with a dock able to build vessels over 300 metres," said Francesco Tosato, an analyst at the Centro Studi Internazionali. "That is good for the super cruise ships for which there is growing demand, but also makes it strategic for naval industry consolidation."
A further twist came when the French government began to mull the idea this month of not only holding on to its own 33.4 percent share in the yard, which gives it veto powers, but also introducing state-controlled naval vessel builder DCNS as a shareholder.
"Putting DCNS in as shareholder would create the conditions for naval cooperation between it and Fincantieri, with French government backing," said Tosato.
"I would be pleased if this deal pushed cooperation between Fincantieri and DCNS," said Admiral Bisceglie, Italy's naval procurement chief.
A second Italian analyst said Fincantieri had the credentials to convince France it could be trusted with Saint-Nazaire, pointing to the firm's takeover of the Marinette Marine yard in the US in 2008, where it has built Littoral Combat Ships for Lockheed Martin.
"The US is mindful of letting non-US firms into strategic industries, yet it felt Fincantieri was reliable," said Michele Nones, head of the security and defense department at the Istituto Affari Internazionali, a Rome think tank.
"It has shown it can control a foreign yard while increasing value," he added.
Talk of a naval equivalent to Airbus comes at an opportune moment, as the European Union talks up initiatives to create a unified military capability, something which will require greater consolidation among industrial suppliers.
Italy and France have previously built Fremm and Horizon frigates together in joint programs, although they are now competing against each other to sell Fremm frigates in export markets, while a torpedo-related team-up broke down.
Michele Nones said the prospects were not all good for Fincantieri and DCNS teaming again in the short term. "After Fremm, there has been little drive to do another joint program, so there is nothing to build a partnership around," he said. "They were talking about plans to build a logistics ship together, but the French pulled out," he said. Italy is building a new logistics ship as part of its large-scale fleet renewal program.
France may also insist on Fincantieri taking a stake smaller than 50 percent in Saint-Nazaire, limiting its control.
But Nones saw room for optimism. "If Fincantieri can take over Saint Nazaire and DCNS takes a stake, it is certainly a step forward," he said.
