The final round of the 2024 Assoluti d’Italia Enduro Championship came to Arma di Taggia with a narrow three points lead for Beta Racing’s Brad Freeman over GASGAS Factory Racing’s Andrea Verona and with Honda RedMoto Racing’s Steve Holcombe a further four points behind
Much like the 2024 EnduroGP World Championship season
the Italian series has been a battle all through the year with this final weekend going right to the wire – all that was missing was a Josep
Set to be a two-day finale of the season
the organisers were forced to make it Saturday shootout with a sever weather warning for the Sunday
Following a Friday night Super Test or Prologue on the beach
won by Verona ahead of Freeman and Holcombe
day one was reduced to about 40 km by decision of track inspector Mario Rinaldi and featured three special tests: a 2 km Cross Test along the picturesque beach of Arma di Taggia
a 6 km Enduro Test characterised by hard and muddy ground
which offered a stunning view over the sea from the nearby hills
It was a day which see-sawed overall leaders with each test and lap with the three protagonists nip and tuck in the timesheets
Steve Holcombe ruled himself out of contention in the final enduro test where a crash cost him a lot of time and any chance of the win
Andrea Verona meanwhile stormed back to the top on the final lap to sneak the win away from Freeman and the pair finished the season exactly tied on 132 points
Brad Freeman it is then on tie-break who takes 2024 Italian Enduro Champion’s crown ahead of Andrea Verona and Steve Holcombe third
Among the other title winners at the final Italian round were Lorenzo Macoritto in 250 2T class
Verona 450 4T winner and Freeman the “Foreigners” class

Olives are integral to the Italian diet. Eaten as a snack during aperitivo or pressed into oil and used as the base of any dish
to say olives are important is an understatement
while southern varieties like the buttery Castelvetrano or tart Gaeta are often in the culinary limelight
there's another cultivar that's known as northwestern Italy's sweetheart: the Taggiasca
Technically speaking, Olive Oil Emporium explains that Italian Taggiasca olives are part of the Cailletier cultivar
Niçoise olives describe fruit that's already undergone a salt-brining process
Taggiasca olives refer to the actual cultivar
Named after the town of Taggia, Organic Farming Italy reports that the olives are said to have been introduced to the area by French Benedictine monks in the 7th century
Moving inland from the Côte d'Azur and founding a new monastery
locals consider the monks responsible for planting the first Taggiasca trees
Thriving thanks to the coastal climate and calcium-rich soils
the plump yet petite olives have since become a sensation
defining Ligurian cuisine — but more on that later
Trailing up twisted trunks, Taggiasca trees have an abundance of branches, each rich with foliage and fruit. Budding as bitter green berries, Olio Abbo explains that the small olives (roughly 1/2 an inch) are usually harvested once they've darkened to a brownish green or brownish burgundy
Due to the rugged and hilly landscape, Taggiasca olives must be exclusively harvested by hand, a process that can take several weeks. Foodiletto outlines that traditionally
mesh netting is laid under the plants to catch any fallen fruit before laborers shake the rest loose from branches with a wooden stick called a trappa
modern amenities like vibrating machines can also help speed the process along
they might a punchier flavor as a result of being brined in wine vinegar
that isn't to say that Taggiasche don't have their fair share of good qualities
When it comes to oil production, Olio Alberti reports that the Taggiasca is praised for its ability to yield more liquid gold — up to 26% more — in comparison to other northern cultivars in Liguria
This is why it's a key player in the production of DOP-certified Riviera Ligure Extra Virgin Olive Oil
though there are many types of Italian olives used to craft oil
only a few varietals are worthy of also being enjoyed tableside
Different from larger snacking and oil-producing varieties like the sweet Nocellara del Belice or earthy Itrana olive
the tiny Taggiasca boasts an impressively unexpected level of complexity that's both mildly fruity with a twang of zest
Try them for yourself and taste the difference
Metzeler leads the FIM Enduro GP World Championship in all classes after the first round
Brad Freeman dominated the E3 and Enduro GP while Josep Garcia and Andrea Verona lead respectively in E1 and E2
and Jane Daniels (Women) complete the Metzeler success Arma di Taggia (Italy)
This is a press release/race recap from Metzeler…
The Liguria-based race was characterised by a mild climate and a highly technical and treacherous race path of over 40km
which both for the spectacularity of the places and for the historical tradition of enduro in these areas attracted to the Ligurian town a huge audience of fans who poured in along all the special tests to support the best riders in the world of international enduro
The race path of the 2023 Italian GP opened on both days with a 2 km Cross Test on the beach of Arma di Taggia a few kilometers from the Paddock
followed by a 7 km long Enduro Test with hard terrain and full of natural obstacles inside a woods area and an Extreme Test at the end of the lap as spectacular as insidious for its climbs and descents characterized by hard and dusty terrain interspersed with stones for a total of 2.4 km
In the Enduro GP class Metzeler dominated thanks to the double win of Brad Freeman (Team Beta Factory Enduro)
Andrea Verona (Gas Gas Gas Factory Racing) took second place while Steve Holcombe (Team Beta Factory Enduro) completed the podium
Josep Garcia (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) is the leader of the Enduro 1 class: the Spanish rider’s score is a second place in Day One and an excellent victory on Sunday
Third place overall for Italian rider Thomas Oldrati (Honda Racing RedMoto World Enduro Team)
In the Enduro 2 class two Metzeler riders battled it out for the top spot throughout the entire race weekend
Andrea Verona (Gas Gas Gas Factory Racing) managed to take two victories battling it out with Steve Holcombe (Team Beta Factory Enduro) who had to settle for two second places instead
The absolute ruler of the Enduro 3 class was Brad Freeman (Team Beta Factory Enduro)
who finished twice in first place at Arma di Taggia and is the provisional leader of the standings
As in the past edition Mikael Persson (Husqvarna Factory Racing) is his main antagonist and collected two well-deserved second places
the Metzeler MCE 6 Days ExtremeE-equipped rider Jed Etchells (JET Fantic Racing) is currently the provisional leader thanks to a first and a second place in the two days of competition at the Italian GP
An excellent performance also for Metzeler-supported KTM rider Max Ahlin; the Swedish rider’s final score is a second and a third place
In the Youth class Kevin Cristino (Fantic Racing) got off on the right foot
the vice world champion collected two important victories at the Italian GP
which earned him the first position with full points
scored a splendid one-two at Arma di Taggia and at the end of the Ligurian weekend raised the class leader’s table to the sky
The reigning champion of the Women’s class demonstrated at the Italian GP her excellent form
The FIM EnduroGP World Championship will now take a one-month break before moving to Laìn
where the second round of the 2023 season will be held May 6-7

Italy’s best-known beaches are renowned worldwide
sparkling seas and settings that offer other-worldly sunrises and sunsets
and while it’s a challenge to find an empty beach almost anywhere in peak season (except boat-access-only coves)
there are plenty of under-the-radar and less frenzied spots with ample helpings of natural beauty and historic attractions
These places have not lost their local rhythms and charms to a tidal wave of tourists
and are frequented by Italians who live in nearby towns
Cassandra Santoro of Travel Italian Style and Francesca Montillo of Lazy Italian Culinary Adventures share tips for finding these beaches and seaside resorts in some of Italy’s most in-demand coastal regions
I’ve also added a couple of my own suggestions
At her company Sanremo Experience
specializes in travel experiences focusing on the Italian Riviera and Côte d’Azur
The coast near San Lorenzo al Mare and Arma di Taggia
In addition to the famous and glamorous stops along the Riviera
Roberta Giovannina delights in showing visitors the less familiar parts of Liguria
on the Riviera di Ponente not far from the French border
describing it as one of the most historic and cultural spots in the region
Taggia consists of two villages—Taggia itself which she says is a beautiful
In the seaside area you’ll find sandy stretches of beach with a mix of private lidos and public areas
Beaches here have earned the coveted Bandiera Blu status
A former Roman outpost and an important trade center for the Republic of Genoa, Taggia is one of the Borghi Più Belli d’Italia
Giovannina likes to take visitors to the center of the medieval village where you’ll find ancient coats of arms embellishing building facades and fortified portals
and many botteghe selling handcrafted products from the town and nearby region
Among the other attractions are the arched Ponte Antico bridge from the Middle Ages
the ruins of a castle on a site affording great views
and the Convent of the Dominican Fathers with a work attributed to Parmigianino
The town is also famous for Taggiasca olives and the olive oil produced in the area
but the beaches are wonderful here,” says Giovannina
Said to be the smallest hamlet in the province of Imperia (and a short drive from Taggia)
much of what the bigger resorts have to offer—a combination of sandy and rocky beaches with public areas and beach clubs
a centro storico dating from the Middle Ages
and a wonderful lungomare or sea promenade for evening passeggiatas
which becomes a swirl of blue and green umbrellas in high season
San Lorenzo is also at the end (or beginning depending on the direction you’re coming from) of a 24-kilometer cycling path that starts/finishes in Ospedaletti
Giovannini calls the cycle path one of the Riviera’s “crown jewels.”
Cassandra Santoro is the founder and CEO of Travel Italian Style specializing in customized trips in Italy
Santoro says that while she enjoys the seaside life of southern Italy—her base is currently Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast—she frequently travels throughout the country to discover new experiences for her clients and has visited each of Italy’s 20 regions
“While not exactly hidden [with a location on the Sorrento Peninsula]
Massa Lubrense has long been overlooked,” says Cassandra Santoro
scenic hiking trails and convenient proximity to Sorrento town and the Amalfi Coast
Massa Lubrense offers a refreshing alternative.” A range of accommodations are available from Termini to Nerano [frazioni
there has been a noticeable increase in interest for visitors
even though it was once only a place for locals.”
Santoro refers to Santa Maria di Castellabate
a two-and-a-half-hour drive south of the Amalfi Coast
as “a hidden gem tucked away in the territory of Cilento
You might recognize it from Benvenuti al Sud [a popular movie released in 2010],” she says
“but its real charm lies in [the] peaceful vibe
The seaside offers Blue Flag waters and a mix of sandy and pebbly beaches.” Santoro notes the town has plenty of local shops
“Cilento is known for its focus on the Mediterranean diet and the mozzarella here is one of my favorites
‘mozzarella nella mortella’ [prepared with age-old methods using myrtle leaves for preservation]
for a true taste of the region.” For those interested in [ancient] history
the Parco Archeologico di Paestum is nearby
For the past few years Gallipoli has been one of Santoro’s favorite summer getaways
“The town is located just 40 minutes from Lecce and boasts its own rich history
and delicious local eateries.” Within the town she says is the “serene Spiaggia della Purità
You can [also] opt for one of the nearby traditional lidos if you prefer to rent chairs and have a full-out beach-club experience
Either way expect to enjoy the crystal clear water!”
Francesca Montillo is the founder of Lazy Italian Culinary Adventures that offers planned and customized culinary tours throughout Italy
who was born in Italy and now resides in the U.S.
is the author of three popular Italian cookbooks
is one of the most beautiful towns in the Vibo area of Calabria,” says Francesca Montillo
“If you are looking for a place full of history
Start your trip by visiting the centro storico with its narrow
which create a magical atmosphere.” She gives Pizzo high marks for authenticity
describing it as the type of town where you come across children playing soccer in courtyards
and see laundry hanging on balconies while you wander small
“The marina offers a great view of local life
noting that you can watch fishermen heading out to or returning from the sea
She says it won’t be long before more people discover Pizzo
but mostly from other Italians and not from folks outside Italy.”
“which is a high number for a town with less than 10,000 inhabitants.” Her favorite is the Chiesetta di Piedigrotta
Another recommendation for Pizzo is to stop at one of the many gelato shops and try the local specialty flavor
and each claims to have the best,” she says
which felt huge to me growing up in a place ten minutes away with a population of 1,000
a number of interesting churches and a castle,” says Montillo
“The Gulf of Squillace attracts most visitors and by most visitors I mean other locals from nearby towns or ex-pats such as myself who return every summer as the area is not yet widely recognized outside of Calabria
“Squillace Lido Marina has rocky and sandy beaches
suitable for children and adults,” she says
“Here you will find beach clubs as well as free beaches
The pine forest that surrounds this beach allows one to cool off on the hottest days
A few minutes away are Copanello and Caminia beaches with crystal-clear seas
Both are also very popular with locals during hot summer months.”
Montillo says travelers to Squillace should make a point of stopping by the Norman Castle in the historic center to see “a perfect example of medieval architecture
It has been remodeled several times due to earthquakes
For souvenirs she suggests visiting the many artisan shops specializing in ceramics and pottery
which is one of the municipalities in Italy that can boast of having a DOC brand
The workshops are scattered throughout the historic center and you can watch the artisans at work.”
who come for the wide sandy beaches and Bandiera-Blu-ranked seas
I experienced the beaches here when I was a student in Pisa
and took advantage of the balmy coastal climate
where you could often swim from May to October
where umbrellas and loungers are available to rent
you can explore the Oasis WWF Dune di Tirrenia
a 24-hectare property with paths for walking and biking
and descriptive signage to help you identify plants and wildlife
Along one of the most famous stretches of coast in Italy
not far from the glamorous yacht-centric Portofino
you’ll find the hamlet of San Michele di Pagana
a low-key destination that’s held on to a get-away-from-it-all vibe even though it is within walking distance of the famous resort
like an Anthony van Dyck painting and other pieces by Luca Giordino and Guercino in the local church
pebbly sand beaches that offer both public spaces and private lidos
handbuilt village2 July 2024ShareSaveCatherine BennettShareSaveGetty ImagesBussana Vecchia was levelled by an earthquake in 1887 and eventually became a ghost town (Credit: Getty Images)After a Ligurian hilltop village was destroyed by an earthquake
Now residents of this popular tourist attraction are facing eviction
I'm standing outside the puppet maker's house in the Italian medieval village of Bussana Vecchia
the cobblestones glinting in the yellow light emanating from the glass door in front of me
I can see that the back of the building is still a work in progress
with piles of rocks in lieu of a kitchen floor
She sees my gaze and laughs: "I'm still building
Everyone in this village at some point or other has had to build their own house."
Franco is one of Bussana Vecchia's newest residents
She arrived in 2022 after spending 20 years living in Argentina and joined the village's eclectic community of international artists
Spanish – all from people who live here," she tells me over tea as we sit on a rug on her floor and talk about the village's history
Bussana Vecchia is a peculiar character in the lineup of chic resort towns that adorn the coast of the Italian Riviera
It clings to the top of one of the hills bunched above Sanremo
and the latest chapter in its long history begins with a disaster
Many of Bussana's residents were in church
taking mass before a day of work in the fields
Just as the priest had smudged ashes onto the forehead of his last parishioner
there was a terrible shaking in the air and the ground moved beneath their feet
A second quake five minutes later made the thick stone roof of the church give way and crash to the ground
The earthquake that struck along the northern Ligurian coast that day destroyed the upper section of the village
killing people in their beds as their roofs collapsed on them
A total of 53 people died – their names are listed on a marble plaque at the entrance to the village
Sepia photographs from the time show rows of wooden barracks constructed lower down the hill to house refugees
where they ended up living for seven long years
The first stone for Bussana Nuova – the new village down the hill – was laid two years later
and the original town was definitively abandoned in 1894
and Bussana Vecchia (Old Bussana) turned into a ghost town
Smugglers used it to store contraband before crossing over into France
and immigrants from southern Italy moved in for a time
these residents were forcibly evicted by local authorities
The turning point happened at the end of the 1950s
had the idea of turning it into an artists' commune
more artists followed him from across Europe
drawn by the idyll of a place with no rules
where you built your own house by hand out of the rubble and spent your days making art
"I can still remember the smell of it back then," says Erminia Pascucci
Pascucci first came to Bussana Vecchia in 1974 when she was 22 years old
You went to the nearby town of Arma di Taggia once a week to have a shower
Maybe that was part of the fascination we had with the place – it was life pared back to its essentials."
- You can visit Bussana Vecchia as a day trip from other Ligurian towns like Sanremo or Genova
when former residents come back to visit family and friends and the village’s population doubles
you might be lucky enough to catch a concert or party in one of the abandoned buildings
- It’s easiest to visit by car as there’s no public transport directly to the village
there’s a steep but beautiful hiking trail from Bussana Nuova
check out the galleries and buy some art to take home before relaxing with a spritz in Piazzetta Golosa
- The Osteria degli Artisti is the village’s oldest restaurant
It serves up Ligurian specialties at fair prices – but book in advance if you’re coming in the high season
"You fall in love with these stones."
Bussana openly wears its wounds from the earthquake
Some of the medieval houses are boarded up
whereas others have flowers freshly planted in pots and colourful curtains in the windows
children's bikes leaning against a side door
as though the village were in continual preparation for a fete
The imprint of the artists is everywhere: shards of colourful tile run across a wall; paintings decorate the streets; and sculptures made of twisted wire
clay or found materials are hidden around the town like Easter eggs
The still-roofless church is overgrown with grass and weeds now
and pigeons cluster in its fresco-covered arches
Despite Bussana Vecchia's popularity – or perhaps because of it
as some residents believe – the authorities are threatening the villagers with eviction
In 2017 residents received letters informing them that they had no legal right to their houses and were considered illegal squatters by the state
people in the village banded together to form a collective
calling themselves i Resilienti (the Resilients)
• Is Italy breaking up with you?
• The Mediterranean isle where hikers stay for free
• The stunning Tuscan town even Italians don't know
The collective is currently in a tug-of-war with the regional authorities and the state property department
Residents want to be recognised as the rightful owners of houses that they rebuilt themselves
The authorities initially wanted residents to pay fines to the state for illegally occupying the houses
but that was struck down in a ruling by the Council of State in June 2024
The Sanremo municipality has come up with various suggestions to solve the impasse
including running a public auction so that villagers can bid on their own houses (although they risk being outbid and losing their home)
the beautiful artists' village!' But then at the same time they're waging war on us," says Pascucci
The regional mayor said that restoration plans are an "unmissable opportunity" to turn the village into a "jewel" that is "finally accessible in total safety"
snorts at the idea that the village isn't safe
"Probably the worst accident that there's been in this village happened to me!" he says
I was playing in the ruined church when a stone fell on my face and broke my nose
This is the only reason the state is concerned – they don't want to spend thousands of euros in compensation to a tourist who was hurt here." Like many residents
he's worried that if the authorities gain control
the village will turn into a tourist trap and lose its bohemian spirit
Others are happy to get a "concession" – the right to spend the rest of their lives in their houses
in exchange for a symbolic annual rent paid to the regional authorities
The collective fears that the state will take each resident to court to evict them – effectively picking them off one by one
€15m of European recovery funds that would have gone to the restoration of the village went instead to Sanremo
Not that the residents mind – they're used to the junkyard feel of the village
the tangle of cables and wires on the outsides of houses
the leaking roofs that they patch up themselves
What they're trying to protect is a lot less tangible – it's the spirit of open-mindedness and freedom that has defined life in the village for the past 60 years

21+ elevator hours and a seasonal Martini Rooftop Garden

the hotel was the place to go for a solid dry martini
“No other cocktail has such a firm grip on society or culture as the martini does
and every generation is flocking to quintessential New York City bars to indulge in the very best this city has to offer,” said Scott Case

This year’s championship kicks-off in the Northern Italian coastal town of Arma di Taggia
not far from the French border on the Mediterranean coast
Enduro21 already previewed the riders you might want to watch this season here but with the FIM releasing the pre-entry list for the opening round we’ve got the notebook and pencil out again for some fresh facts…
Enduro21 will be at each and every round of the 2023 FIM EnduroGP World Championship bringing the best photography
You wouldn't think of Scottsdale's founder Winfield Scott as a muse unless you're talking about The Scott Resort and Spa and its new restaurant
Chef de cuisine Chris Castro said The Canal Club is "inspired by the property’s two muses" — Scott and Julian Duarte
a Cuban-American immigrant — and "balances the new with the old
Though The Canal Club has only been open for a few weeks (the grand opening was Nov.1)
the project has been in the works since April 2016
That's when Phoenix-based Classic Hotels and Resorts purchased the Firesky Resort and Spa from Kimpton Hotels
a division of Intercontinental Hotels Group
The new owners announced plans to rebrand and rename the resort
investing $15 million in The Scott over the next two years
new designLocated on the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Chaparral roads
the resort’s new island-themed decor intends to conjure up old Havana
about a decade before Hemingway set up house in Havana
The remodeled lobby is a jungle of greenery
surrounded by rattan and wicker furniture.
Gone is the previous Taggia restaurant with its Italian flavors and open kitchen — and the interim Scott Grill put in place to serve guests during the remodeling
The Canal Club look is warm: olive green walls
gold upholstered chairs finished in rattan
and a wall sealing off the kitchen from the dining room.
new menuAs the resort’s only restaurant
The Canal Club serves breakfast and a combined lunch and dinner menu
previously worked for LGO Hospitality (La Grande Orange
among other restaurants) as senior sous chef
he was executive sous chef at Hotel L’Ermitage Viceroy in Beverly Hills
"The menu channels the core of American cuisine — ingenuity
discovery and synthesis — through a fresh blend of Southwestern and Caribbean food heritages," Castro said
Signature cocktails are influenced by the Sonoran Desert and the Caribbean
while the Mission Revival is tequila
including one called Be Very Careful ($13)
A new brunch menu will debut in November

The 2023 GP of Italy couldn’t arrive soon enough for most of us eager to catch the class of ’23 in action against each other for the first time
and a seemingly better than ever prepared list of potential challengers across the classes are already walking the tests in Italy
fast riders plus the early national racing makes this a very open championship season
It feels like the first time we’ve had all rider fit
things settled and in ship-shape since the pandemic to be honest and it promises much across the next seven months
Picking a winner from this lot is equally impossible with a heap of young talent beginning the Junior title chase which this year will see a new champ as Zach Pichon moves up
2022 Enduro Youth World Champion Harry Edmondson
the Navarro brothers are just some of the potential podium pie eaters
Kevin Cristino starts as favourite this year ahead of over 30 EY class riders entered into the opening round of the 2023 world championship
The female category at world championship level can often be a one-horse race
In recent seasons that has largely been Jane Daniels’ who has dominated with the exception of a brief return of Queen Laia two seasons ago
2023 looks set to buck that trend with two very determined Rieju riders and one Italian Honda rider busting the formbook not to mention riders from 10 nationalities in the entry list
Rieju’s challengers for Daniels’ dominance are Mireia Badia and Rosie Rowett who have raced and trained together in Spain during the winter months and are highly motivated to topple the reigning champion
Only one rider has beaten Daniels this pre-season however
in fact the only rider to beat her since the ISDE last year
Francesca Nocera in the second tier Honda RedMoto team has form and is on home soil this weekend
Factor in there the reigning European Enduro Champion Nieve Holmes and we definitely have a Women’s World Championship worth watching
The first GP of the season will see a full house of senior EnduroGP riders
the Galfer FIM Junior World Championship and the FIM Women’s World Championship
The main paddock and parc ferme is situated close to the French border on the Riveira di Ponente in San Remo
Many of the riders have already had more than a taste of the typically Italian terrain with two Italian Enduro Championship rounds running in very similar conditions already including the ACERBIS Cross Test on the San Remo beach
The surrounding mountain trails will lead riders to the JUST1 Enduro Test and POLISPORT Extreme Test with the Cross and and AKRAPOVIC Super Test situated near base camp
The Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship gets underway with the AKRAPOVIC Super Test in San Remo on Friday evening
Stay tuned to Endur21 for all the results and rider reaction across the weekend

Opening this month in North Scottsdale is Local Bistro
a casual neighborhood eatery specializing in quality pasta
formerly of Taggia at FireSky Resort and La Locanda
Chef Volpi plans to deliver classic and straightforward European favorites with contemporary updates
bouillabaisse in a light saffron tomato jus and New York Strip au poivre with brandy peppercorn sauce
Ingredients are locally sourced and prepared from scratch
“Each item on our menu has been thoroughly thought-out and perfected by Chef Volpi,” said German Osio
“We deliberately stayed away from fusion-style cooking and instead focused on back-to-basics fare … The result are entrées that are reminiscent of traditional comfort food while also celebrating European cuisine at its best.”
And one thing’s for sure: neither Volpi or Osio is any stranger to restaurant success
Prior to his involvement with Local Bistro
Italy) contributed to the flourishing Italian restaurant Taverna in Texas before making a name for himself on the Phoenix dining scene
and his recipes have been published in such national foodie mags as Bon Appetit and Gourmet
also earned local accolades for its high-quality fare
Osio claims the bistro will be modern with a cozy atmosphere
daily specials written on chalkboards and wine bottle racks lining the walls
what would a neighborhood hangout be without a good outdoor patio
and Local Bistro says they’ll have one of those
too — all the better on which to enjoy the creative cocktails by mixologist Bill DeGroot
