approximately 40 officials are under investigation in a case that will begin presentation to a panel of judges on Wednesday
Prosecutors asked for two individuals to be placed under house arrest and 11 others to be suspended from their roles pending the outcome of the investigation
The accusations are that the company was giving out “gold cards” which provided free travel and making other gifts to the officials
This builds on the investigation in which it is being charged that the ferry company tampered with vessels operating on its route between Genoa and Porto Torres
Tirrena has a government contract to provide the service and receives government payments for critical ferry operations
The allegations include that Tirrena was concealing non-compliance by its vessels by making false reports to the registers or by counterfeiting public authentication on documents used to obtain and maintain certification for the vessels
The company is alleged to have been embezzling public funds by operating ships that were not meeting regulations
The investigation reportedly revealed that “Components of the main engines and diesel generators had been tampered with
or replaced with non-original spare parts.” As such
the vessels were reported to be non-compliant but kept in service with counterfeit and false documents
Three ships were placed under arrest under “precautionary custody” to protect public funds
The company however was permitted to continue to operate them to ensure consistency of service
The prosecutors were seeking to protect more than €64 million (nearly $77 million) in public funds that could be involved in the fraud case
The shipping company responded through its lawyers saying it was “astonished” over the allegations
They said the company has faced significant expenses and made large investments to conform with regulations on pollution
Prosecutors said the investigation into the vessels began in 2023 and dated back to issues in 2021
They believe since then Tirrenia has rectified the compliance issues on its ships
The bribery of officials with free trips is believed to be widespread involving police
Italian ferry company Tirrenia-Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione is under investigation for serious charges of corruption
Prosecutors have seized three of the company’s ferries under a probe that also involves dozens of government officials
Authorities allege that Tirrenia submitted false documents about the environmental condition of its vessels and used counterfeit certifications to mislead the classification societies and ship registers
These acts are said to have allowed the company to continue operating vessels that did not meet safety or environmental standards
Prosecutors claim that key machinery on board the ferries
including main engines and diesel generators
the vessels remained in service by using fraudulent documents
three ships have been placed under what officials call “precautionary custody” to prevent further risk to public funds
authorities have allowed the company to keep operating the vessels temporarily to maintain essential ferry services
Tirrenia currently holds a government contract to run the Genoa to Porto Torres route and receives public funding for this operation
Investigators believe that by continuing to run non-compliant vessels under false pretences
the company may have illegally benefited from over €64 million (nearly $77 million) in state payments
The probe has expanded beyond document fraud to include allegations of bribery as well
about 40 public officials are now under investigation
Prosecutors claim these individuals received unlawful gifts
The list of officials involved includes police officers
the case is expected to be presented before a panel of judges
Prosecutors have already asked for two people to be placed under house arrest and for 11 others to be temporarily removed from their duties while the investigation continues
responded by saying the company was “astonished” by the accusations
Its lawyers stated that the company had made huge investments to meet pollution control and environmental standards and had incurred major expenses in the process
investigators maintain that public documents were forged
and public officials were bribed in exchange for turning a blind eye
The investigation is still underway but prosecutors believe that the bribery scheme was deeply rooted in the system

Con questo successo i danesi si garantiscono un posto in semifinale

Italy's maritime unions have reacted strongly to leading ferry operator Cin Tirrenia's 'corporate restructuring plan' that involves the possible loss of around 1,000 jobs and the closure of its longstanding Naples headquarters
Fit CISL and Uiltrasporti immediately met the government after Tirrenia head Vincenzo Onorato unilaterally announced his reorganisation plan before Christmas
The minister said he would consider a technical postponement of renewal of Tirrenia's lifeline contract with the Italian government
Tirrenia operates Italian-flagged ferries between Sardinia
for which it receives €72m from the government under its lifeline contract
The unions are questioning whether Tirrenia's plan really is to restructure its corporate operations or is a 'masked attempt at mass redundancies'
strong action would be taken to fight against job losses of skilled seafarers
They have requested talks with Mr Onorato during the 'cooling off period' provision in the collective agreement

European Commission limits pursuit of cash to Italian ropax company, not its 2012 buyer CIN
The European Commission (EC) has instructed Italy to try to recover €15m ($16.7m) in illegal state granted to ropax company Tirrenia di Navigazione.
A ruling on Monday found that public service compensation granted since 2009 to Tirrenia and later to its 2012 buyer, Vincenzo Onorato's Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione (CIN), was allowable.
But other measures were ruled incompatible with EU state aid rules.

The Italian Antitrust Authority sanctioned two ferry companies
Moby and Tirrenia CIN which are both part of the Onorato Armatori group
with a fine of €29m ($36m) for abuse of their dominant position in the roro maritime links between Italy and the island of Sardinia
The authority stated that the two companies involved acted with the aim of foreclosing rivals (such as Grimaldi Lines and Grendi Trasporti Marittimi) on the same maritime routes
The companies were chaged with taking retaliatory and punitive commercial measures with those road hauliers which chose competing lines
Onorato Armatori group refuted the authority decision claiming to have “always acted with fairness
in the exclusive interest of its customers and
in full compliance with the service contracts”
The Vincenzo Onorato-lead companies will appeal against the verdict
which originated from petitions signed by two logistics companies based in Sardinia (Trans Isole and Lucianu) and by its two competitor companies

Cargo shipping line Grimaldi has accused Tirrenia of destabilising the market by cutting prices to “unsustainable levels”
stating that the situation has improved since they introduced competition
Grimaldi executive manager Eugenio Grimaldi told The Sunday Times of Malta that Tirrenia was offering rates that were below cost
which would disrupt the equilibrium of the market
It is a strong word but they are ruining a market that we defend strongly from operators from other parts of the world
Until today 90 per cent of Maltese import/export trailer traffic has been carried by Maltese operators
But would foreign operators have the same community commitment and sense of social responsibility?” he said
giving as an example its cadet training programme
“We have no issue with competition,” he said
when asked whether Tirrenia was merely trying to win market share after re-introducing the service after a decades-long absence
“We are the leading company in the world in the Ro-Ro sector
We have competition everywhere and that is fine – as long as it is fair and sustainable
it damages all the industry and its clients
This is the worst scenario for the island,” he warned
saying that if prices were driven down across the sector
this would affect the amount available for future investment
“And the shame is that even though the freight rates are being driven down
none of these savings are being passed on to consumers
If we do something that is supposed to benefit the economy
then it should benefit the end user,” director Ernest Sullivan said
Grimaldi started operating to Malta 13 years ago after the demise of Sea Malta and was the sole Ro-Ro operator between Malta and Italy for several years
it had actually reduced prices by becoming more efficient
and was investing huge amounts in new ships which would carry more cargo and benefit from better economies of scale
the average age of the fleet standing at seven years
Tirrenia sees the situation in Malta quite differently to Grimaldi
saying the amount of merchandise it is being contracted to carry shows that there was a need to shake up the ‘monopoly’
while his competitors’ ships were “decades old and much more polluting” with little chance of investment given its poor financial status
are not an option anymore in today’s business environment,” he told a corporate event recently
“The financial results of other shipping companies are public so I am telling you something that you can read and see on your own: those shipping companies are not financially able to face such big investments
so they will not be able to compete on the market with sustainable and competitive strategies anymore,” he continued
Tirrenia’s parent company Moby had €233 million in cash on its balance sheet at the end of December 2017 and an Ebitda of €135 million but was downgraded by two notches by Moody’s credit rating agency in May
which cited increasing probability of default
This hinges mostly on the potential outcome of an Italian €29 million anti-trust fine and an ongoing investigation by the European Commission into €72.7 million subsidies
which Moody’s said “could overwhelm its financial resources
saying that the amount of merchandise it is being contracted to carry shows that there was a need to shake up the “monopoly”
A spokesman for the company said that Tirrenia was reacting to market demand
teaming up in a joint venture with GNV to double the capacity available
He also noted that Tirrenia was also operating to Naples
a destination that had been “abandoned” by its competitor
with six services from Malta since it re-started operations in 2016
he said that the agency had painted the worst scenario
which did not reflect the actual situation
adding that some of the woes were also down to Italy as a whole and not to the company
Freight and logistics companies have their own views on the situation – mostly positive – with one saying that the introduction of competition had improved the service
“Although Grimaldi believes that they were not exploiting their monopoly
an element of complacency and arrogance does slip in,” a source shrugged
Grimaldi dragged its feet when it came to settling claims for damaged trailers
with payments made “in dribs and drabs”
“It was much easier to insist that we work exclusively with them when they owed us considerable sums,” he said
saying that they were now speeding up payments and making them on a regular basis
“We are also having regular meetings with them to iron out issues
It suits us to have multiple operators.”

Two new vessels will be introduced on the Tirrenia route from Genoa to Malta by the beginning of next year
