Game Recap: Baseball | 5/4/2025 3:25:00 PM
Trailing 5-4 entering the top of the ninth, lead off batter Rob Rispoli worked a 3-2 count and lined a base hit into right center
Rispoli hustled into second ahead of the throw for a lead off double
Caleb Shpur then collected his 11th hit of the weekend, a swinging bunt single, to place runners at the corners with no outs. With Ryan Daniels at the plate
Shpur stole his 36th base of the season to place runners at second and third
a wild pitch plate Rispoli and moved the go-ahead run to third base
Daniels then lifted a long fly ball to deep right
The Villanova RF made a leaping grab to rob Daniels of his fourth home run of the weekend but Shpur was able to tag from third to give UConn the lead back
After a Tyler Minick walk, Sam Biller delivered an RBI double to the left centerfield gap to push the lead to 7-5
It was the 13th RBI of the weekend for Biller and his second of the day
Brady Afthim earned the victory by working around trouble in the ninth

Villanova’s newly-minted head coach has announced his full assistant coaching lineup
Villanova’s new head coach Kevin Willard has announced the full lineup of assistants that will make up his coaching staff
Ashley Howard is the only Villanova staffer to stay
while there are six new members moving to the Main Line from Maryland
and Ricky Harris will be assistant coaches for the 2025-26 season
Brenton Petty has been named director of player personnel
while Charlie Butler is the new director of basketball operations
“We are thrilled to welcome an outstanding group of coaches to Villanova,” Willard said in a statement
“In this era of college basketball staff cohesion is incredibly valuable
To be able to maintain that with coaches who are also a great fit for this community is a huge win
Together we have a group that brings extensive Big East recruiting experience along with a proven track record of on-court development.”
will continue to serve as general manager as another Villanova holdover
Villanova went 9-3 last year and made it to the second round of the FCS playoffs before falling to No
The Wildcats only faced one FBS team — Maryland — during their 2024 campaign
falling to the Terrapins 38-20 in a game that wasn’t really all that close
The Terps scored on their first four possessions
and had a 24-0 lead at halftime before taking the foot off the pedal
the Wildcats lost a couple players to the transfer portal
but one important player they kept was David Avit
220-pound Avit starred as a true freshman last year for the Wildcats
rushing for 923 yards (5.3 yards per attempt) and nine touchdowns
He actually did enter the transfer portal for a period of time
but opted to return to the Main Line for his sophomore season after receiving offers from South Florida and Stanford
Avit doesn’t have insane quickness or blazing speed
But he’s built like a brick house and should carry much of the load for a Villanova offense that will undoubtedly try to bleed the clock and shorten the game as much as possible
A first-team All-CAA and second-team FCS All-American member
Hartzell was a part of a one-two punch with fellow FCS All-American Brendan Bell at linebacker for the Wildcats
but Hartzell spurned the transfer portal for another season as a Wildcat
He’ll look to build off his 2024 season when he had 121 tackles
There’s a pretty good chance Penn State is a 40+ point favorite against Villanova
but it truly isn’t all that realistic to think about Nova beating Penn State
The last time Penn State played Villanova in 2021
the Nittany Lions were 3-0 and were ranked No
6 overall in the country after beating Auburn the week prior
While Penn State beat Nova pretty comfortably 38-17 — at one point being up 38-3 before completely calling off the dogs — that game was when the alarms should have started going off on because the Nittany Lions could *not* run the ball
Penn State could only muster up 80 rushing yards and averaged just 2.4 yards per attempt
When a “Top 10” FBS team faces off against an FCS team and can’t establish the run
So while this *likely* game won’t be in doubt on the scoreboard
the Nittany Lions will have the opportunity to learn a whole lot from it
It’s about the first-team guys going out there and hopefully dominating
and then getting in just about everyone on the roster through the 3rd and 4th quarters
which then leads into the Oregon game so you’d like to see a as crisp of a performance as possible because things get real serious very quickly when the Ducks come to town

playSVP lambastes Kevin Willard for Maryland exit (2:00)Scott Van Pelt goes off on former Maryland coach Kevin Willard after his departure to Villanova
PHILADELPHIA -- Kevin Willard deadpanned that
he hadn't heard the laundry list of complaints lodged against him by Maryland fans and former players -- and
the list goes on -- that he threw his program under the bus after the Terrapins made a run to the Sweet 16
But yes, Willard acknowledged, he was generally aware of the consensus sentiment that he used Maryland as a pawn to get whatever he wanted at a traditional power such as Villanova, which hired Willard as head coach just days after his Terrapins were ousted from the NCAA tournament by top-seeded Florida
So perhaps Willard knew ESPN commentator Scott Van Pelt
"You don't do damage to the university and program where you've been for three years." Perhaps Willard also heard Jimmy's Famous Seafood -- the self-proclaimed home of "the world's greatest crabcakes!" -- stuck snakehead bites on the menu in honor of Willard with all proceeds donated to Maryland's name
Or that all-time Terrapins great Len Elmore said he was weary of "mercenary coaches" who played the school like fiddles
Willard landed at a Villanova program that
despite missing the NCAA tournament for three straight seasons under former coach Kyle Neptune
still has elite status within reach with deep NIL coffers and a whopping payout ahead courtesy of the proposed upcoming House settlement
Maryland forged ahead and hired Buzz Williams away from Texas A&M
bounced on to a new gig -- just like Willard and just like so many successful coaches in March
But Willard says he understands why he caught some heat
He publicly campaigned during Maryland's run to the Sweet 16 for more from the university and athletic department for his Big Ten program
More of everything -- "fundamental changes," he called them -- that really came down to more money being funneled into basketball
Willard wanted Maryland to share its plan for revenue sharing with athletes and questioned how the Terrapins could ever be a "top tier" program as the race in college sports to outspend for players and all the adjacent bells and whistles nearly rivals professional levels
Kevin Willard accepted Villanova's head coaching job just days after his Maryland team was eliminated in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Eakin Howard-Imagn Images"I think some of my comments during the NCAA tournament probably could have been a little bit less abrasive," Willard said Wednesday
normal fans just don't understand what went on."
And for those at Maryland with hurt feelings
"I just think it's time that everyone moved on," he said
Willard expressed concerns with the direction of Maryland's program on the eve of the Terps' opening game in the NCAA tournament
He had not signed an extension before the tournament
a matter complicated when Maryland athletic director Damon Evans left the school for the same job at SMU
"Everything I said during the press conference was because I loved Maryland
I was very passionate about my job," Willard said
all I wanted to do was try to get the best for my players and best for the program
I'm going to do the same thing here at Villanova
My comments were just about having an opportunity to try to make Maryland the best program we could make it."
He should get what he needs at a program that was a perennial Final Four contender and won two national championships under Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright
A court settlement that would require colleges for the first time to pay athletes billions for their play is set for approval next week
Many schools have said that most of the up to $20.5 million they'll pay out to their athletes as part of the $2.8 billion House settlement would go to football and men's basketball players
the bulk of that money is going to men's basketball
"If you understand the House settlement and cap space and all that stuff
I think the Big East is really situated in a unique situation where they're probably never going to have to worry about the cap," Willard said
"I think football conference schools or football-centric conferences are going to run into the fact that if you have $16 million to football
Willard said all the right things about fitting in on his first few days on the job
He watched the Villanova women's team play in a postseason tournament and met with the men's team while it played in Las Vegas in the College Basketball Crown
He even tipped his cap to the "special culture" created within the program by Wright
threw his support behind the Big 5 and was professionally polite by saying he wanted to build on what "Kyle and his staff" have done over the past three years
it was time after three seasons without a tournament berth at Villanova to "get everyone excited again
Wright endorsed Willard, his longtime Big East rival while Willard coached at Seton Hall, and former Wildcats openly supported the new coach on the Main Line. Josh Hart, a 2016 national champion with Villanova who now plays with the New York Knicks
also said Willard was the right coach for the Wildcats
"I hated playing against him because he was a hell of a competitor

a former member of the Villanova University Men’s Basketball team
has been selected as the student speaker at Villanova’s 2025 Commencement ceremony on Friday
currently a member of the New Orleans Pelicans in the National Basketball Association (NBA)
completed his degree in General Studies online through the College of Professional Studies (CPS)
This marks the first time that a CPS student will deliver the student address at Villanova’s Commencement ceremony
Robinson-Earl joins Admiral Samuel Paparo ’87 CLAS
who will address the Class of 2025 as the University’s Commencement speaker and receive the degree of Doctor of Military Science
“I absolutely love the Villanova community and everything they've done for me,” Robinson-Earl said
“And I'm glad that I can be in this position to be in front of all of them and be able to give a speech that means a lot to me.”
“It is an exciting moment for the College of Professional Studies to have one of our students selected to speak at Commencement
especially a student like Jeremiah Robinson-Earl
who embodies the dedication and thoughtfulness of our CPS students,” said Christine Kelleher Palus
Dean of the College of Professional Studies
despite the demanding schedule of a professional athlete
but to also write and deliver a speech worthy of being chosen to be shared with the Class of 2025 shows a true love for his education and for the Villanova community.”
Robinson-Earl initially came to Villanova in the fall of 2019 as a first-year student
he made his mark on the Men’s Basketball program
Robinson-Earl was the 2019-2020 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and the 2020-2021 BIG EAST Player of the Year
he chose to enter the NBA Draft and was selected as the 32nd pick
he’s spent time with the Oklahoma City Thunder and New Orleans Pelicans
continuing his studies with CPS throughout his career
“We have a crazy traveling schedule and we're doing a lot: playing games
(there’s) a choice of whatever you want to do in your spare time
I was able to maximize the opportunity I had
Part of Robinson-Earl’s comfort in taking classes online came from experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic
He was a freshman in the spring of 2020 when his basketball season was abruptly canceled and student-athletes had to adjust to a new
He credits the Villanova community atmosphere for making that transition smooth
we were able to rearrange our plans and be able to accommodate for those circumstances
especially with something as drastic as COVID,” he said
“Nobody had ever been through anything like that.”
as an inspiration throughout his life and a major reason he continued his education
“In a single parent household with me as her only child
she's been there for the whole ride,” Robinson-Earl said
“She has been able to help me out along this journey
As a representative of the College of Professional Studies
Robinson-Earl will showcase the non-traditional pathways toward a degree
he feels a shared experience with anyone pursuing an education while managing different commitments in their lives
“I think everybody's journey is different,” he said
“As long as you realize the importance of (a degree)
when the timing matches up with the opportunity
you can maximize the full potential of that.”
Robinson-Earl’s time in the public eye would seem to prepare him for the spotlight
with experience delivering a commencement address at his high school
Yet he’s aware that his speech at Villanova's Commencement Weekend is a much taller task
something I do on any normal single day is playing basketball in front of a bunch of fans
and on TV there's a lot of people watching
but this is something completely different,” Robinson-Earl added
“I want to be able to step outside of my comfort zone and calm the nerves
knowing that this message that I've built is from the heart
instead of me trying to just read the speech I’ve written.”
“I want to make an impact on others graduating
who have been in the same circumstances that I went through as well.”
Jeremiah Robinson-Earl's speech, along with the entire Villanova University Commencement ceremony, will be available to be livestreamed on Friday

"I'm thrilled to add a bright and talented coach like Mike Nardi to our staff here at UConn," UConn coach Dan Hurley said
"Mike has been a part of winning under the brightest lights and on the biggest stages as both a player and as a coach

before spending one season as the video coordinator and one season as the director of basketball operations
He was part of the program for the 2016 and 2018 national championships before being promoted to assistant coach in 2018
spending the last three seasons as an assistant under Neptune

Temple add players Villanova added another player to its incoming freshman class
The roster rebuild at Villanova under new coach Kevin Willard has had its ups and downs

The Dragons got a commitment Monday from Eastern Michigan transfer Dillon Tingler
a 6-7 wing who was a three-star prospect out of Huntington Expression Prep in West Virginia a year ago
Tingler played 12 minutes per game as a freshman and scored 1.3 points while adding 1.6 rebounds per contest in his limited action

the Owls have begun to backfill some of their departures
and they picked up three portal commitments over the last week
They are: Bowling Green big man Jamai Felt; Nebraska wing Gavin Griffiths; and Manhattan guard Masiah Gilyard
Temple had just four scholarship players on its roster before last week
so there’s still some work to do to build out the 2025-26 lineup
And Gilyard scored 11.2 points per game while being one of the best rebounding guards (7.3 per game) in the nation last season

The remaining uncommitted Villanova players with eligibility in the portal are Jordann Dumont and Kris Parker
Former Villanova assistant coach Mike Nardi will be an assistant coach at Big East rival Connecticut
Nardi served as Villanova’s interim coach after Kyle Neptune was fired
joined the Villanova coaching staff under Jay Wright in 2015
The Huskies get on the road one final time this regular season
Radio: Mixlr
UConn and Villanova first faced off in 1947 and the Huskies have a 46-26 edge in the all-time series
The Huskies enter on a six-game winning streak and have only lose three times to the Wildcats since 2009
That includes a three-game sweep in last season’s series by a combined score of 29-11
as well as two wins in Plymouth Meeting in 2023 before the Sunday finale got washed out by rain
The Huskies first played at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth in 2004 and have a 14-6 record at the venue
Villanova comes into the weekend on a four-game losing streak and a 2-8 record in its last 10 games
Creighton and Xavier helped the Wildcats to 16 runs over six games the last two weekends
Joseph’s got the crosstown victory on Tuesday
Kevin Mulvey’s team has an outside chance at getting back to the Big East Tournament for the first time since 2008
that’s the last time UConn missed a conference tournament
as the Wildcats beat the Huskies by a game for the final spot
even though they took two of three in the regular season series
it’ll probably need a win this weekend and at least a series victory over St
which has not done well offensively all season
Despite a strength of schedule in the bottom half of the country
it’s outside the top 200 in runs and scores 6.2 per contest
but aren’t nearly as big of a problem as the slugging percentage
with only two qualified hitters above .450 in Jason Neff (.313/.424/.646) and Michael Whooley (.318/.429/.522)
That pair are the only two with more than 10 extra-base hits and Neff has 22 on his own
which is more than one-quarter of the team’s total
The Wildcats work plenty of walks and are patient
but have proved that they can’t do significant damage on pitches in the zone
Half of the team’s 10 qualified hitters have a slugging percentage below .300
Villanova is in the back end of the top 200 in ERA
While none of the starters have top-end numbers
4.40) have eaten innings and prevented too many runs from crossing the plate
they deal with tons of traffic on the bases
as both have a batting average against above .280
which is where UConn can blow these games open and force the Wildcats to go to the bullpen
He’s one of eight primary relievers with more than 10 innings pitched and the only one with an ERA below 4.50 and a WHIP below 1.50
John’s how much it can score and if it can do so again
has a chance to take another weekend sweep

It’s hard to find one on the market more experienced than Devin Askew

Askew’s two seasons were derailed by injuries
He landed at Long Beach this past season and thrived at a lower level
The Wildcats also have incoming freshman Chris Jeffrey
and apparently remain in the running for another top freshman point guard
though Askew’s arrival probably would limit the amount of touches either freshman receives
Askew at least is a stopgap point guard who can help Villanova bridge to its future at the position
The Wildcats now have nine scholarship players in the fold for 2025-26
They are still a favorite to land Bosnian forward Harun Zrno
a 6-foot-7 sharpshooter who was originally committed to Indiana before reopening his recruitment following a coaching change
They could use another experienced bigger forward
though rising redshirt freshman Matthew Hodge has a bright future and could see plenty of time in the frontcourt

PHILADELPHIA – On Sunday afternoon in the second round of the WBIT
the visiting Villanova Wildcats rallied for a thrilling 62-60 win over the Saint Joseph's Hawks in the second round of the WBIT
the Wildcats improve to 20-14 on the season
while Saint Joseph's ends its season at 24-10
Villanova will now advance to the quarterfinal round on Thursday
and take on the winner of the Seton Hall/Portland game
Talya Brugler led the early Hawk charge with eight of her team's 16 points
Villanova rebounded and scored seven of the final eight points of the period to make it a 17-15 game after one quarter of play
Grad student guard Bronagh Power-Cassidy drained her second three of the quarter during the stretch and freshman point guard Jasmine Bascoe added two driving lay-ups
With the score tied at 21-21 midway through the second quarter, Villanova scored five quick points on a three-ball by junior Ryanne Allen and a lay-up from Lara Edmanson to grab a 26-21 advantage
Edmanson closed out the first half scoring with a 10-foot jumper
The Edmanson bucket sent the teams to halftime with the Wildcats leading 33-28
Eight different Wildcats scored in the first half with Edmanson and Power-Cassidy leading the way with six points each
The Hawks started the third quarter by scoring the first eight points to take a 36-33 lead
Brugler and Laura Ziegler scored four points each with all eight coming in the paint
Bascoe ended the Saint Joseph's run and the Villanova's scoreless stretch that lasted 3:09 with two free throws that cut the lead to 36-35
neither team was able to open-up more than a four point lead the rest of the quarter and the Hawks led 43-42 after three
Saint Joseph's held a 52-50 advantage with 5:35 to play
when the Hawks scored six of the game's next eight points to take a 58-52 lead at the 2:16 mark
With the Hawks on the verge of pulling away
Bascoe drained a triple from the wing to make it a 58-55 game with 1:51 to go
Saint Joseph's went back up five at 60-55 on short jumper by Mackenzie Smith
The Hawks led 60-55 with 42 seconds remaining, when they turned the ball over with Villanova's Maddie Webber coming up with the key steal
Webber then pushed the ball up the court and made it a one possession game at 60-58 with 38 seconds to go when she buried a deep three from the right wing
Webber came up with another steal on the Hawks next possession with 11 seconds left to play. Villanova elected to not call a timeout and Webber advanced the ball to Bascoe who found Maddie Burke in the corner who drained the game-winner triple with 4.3 seconds remaining
Saint Joseph's had one timeout left and used it to advance the ball to the front court
the Hawks got the ball to Brugler on the block
the ball hit her foot and went out of bounds
Villanova's Kaitlyn Orihel made one of two from the foul and the Wildcats inbounded the ball to seal the win
In the victory, Bascoe led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Burke finished with nine points, including a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range. Jaliyah Green came off the bench to add seven points and seven rebounds, while Denae Carter chipped in with seven points and five rebounds

The Catholic Pennsylvania institution will become “Villanova University
Rosemont Campus” after a transition period under a merger agreement
Villanova University President Peter Donohue described the merger with Rosemont as a “unique and powerful opportunity for our two institutions given our shared commitment to advancing Catholic higher education
our close physical proximity and deep alumni connections.”
Donohue also noted that Villanova and Rosemont students for years have taken classes and participated in programs at each others’ campuses
which enrolled 10,111 students for that period
Student bodies have shrunk at both colleges
though Rosemont’s has done so at a faster clip
fall enrollment plunged 17.8% at Rosemont compared to a 8.3% drop at Villanova
founded in 1921 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus
It racked up a total operating deficit of $914,220 in fiscal 2023
more than triple the previous year’s budget gap
Rosemont’s fiscal 2023 audit also contained a going-concern warning
indicating there was “substantial doubt” about its ability to keep operating
The audit cited the college's failure to meet the U.S
Department of Education's benchmarks to be considered financially responsible
in response to the financial issues flagged by auditors
including cutting executive-level positions
nixing a handful of vacant positions to reduce overall staffing and consolidating its student housing
The college also borrowed $7 million from its endowment to support operations and pay down a credit line
College leaders said they believed those efforts
as well as marketing initiatives and enrollment partnerships — such as one with the Fraternal Order of Police — alleviated the going-concern doubt
But merging with Villonova is meant to add to both institutions’ strengths
“We are committed to securing the best possible options for our students
faculty and staff and believe this merger with Villanova offers the best opportunity to ensure that the Rosemont College history and legacy endures,” Rosemont President Jim Cawley said Monday in a statement
Rosemont will continue operating as a separate entity through the transition period and maintain its academic programming during that time
Rosemont students who haven’t completed their degrees by 2028 will have multiple options to do so
including transferring to Villanova’s professional studies college
Student athletes on Rosemont’s NCAA Division III teams can move to club sports after the spring 2026 semester — given that Villanova is a Division I university
The college is looking for other D-III institutions that could provide quick and easy transfer pathways for student athletes from Rosemont
The merger agreement also calls for the preservation of Rosemont’s chapel as “a place of gathering and inspiration.” To maintain Rosemont’s legacy
the institutions said an endowed scholarship will be created after the transition “supporting the mission” of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus
This isn’t Villanova’s only recent expansion. In 2024, the university bought the 112-acre Pennsylvania campus of Cabrini University following the Catholic institution’s decision to close. Per the agreement
they renamed the site Villanova University Cabrini Campus
Several Catholic liberal arts colleges have struggled in recent years along with their secular peers
Facing enrollment and financial challenges
This year, Gannon University and Ursuline College, for example, announced a formal merger agreement. And Iowa’s St. Ambrose University is working to acquire Mount Mercy University as part of a plan announced last year
