because that would also mean I’d have to give up my short and storied career as a running shoe reviewer
The void in my absence would be unbearable to all two dozen of you
even if that meaning has changed quite a bit over the past decade
I’m the counterbalance to Meg’s love of max cushion here at Believe in the Run
I must admit that I’ve relented when it comes to the max cushion movement
What began as a soft mess has now become a bit of relief for these road weary legs
But max cushion is here to say for the foreseeable future
This is our second review of a shoe within the new Nike running alignment (we already reviewed the Pegasus Plus and the Pegasus Premium is coming soon)
a brief overview of the updates to the Vomero 18
The Nike Vomero 18 holds true to its purpose as a max cushion shoe
going above and beyond past versions with a 46 mm of stack height in the heel and 36 mm in the forefoot
the midsole is a two-layer composite of Nike foams– a thin top layer of the bouncy PEBA-style ZoomX found in models like the Invincible and Vaporfly
the same foam found in shoes like the Pegasus 41 and InfinityRN 4
Nike wants you to think the whole thing is ZoomX
so it somewhat misleadingly prints the word ZoomX on the bulbous heel section which is– in reality– ReactX foam
pretty much every other brand does this as well
Part of that is the large volume of cushion
part of that is the all-around foot comfort and padding found within the engineered mesh upper and its tongue
Note the top layer of ZoomX and bottom layer of ReactX
MEAGHAN: Nike announced the launch of the Vomero 18 along with a completely new road running shoe structure
There are now three categories of cushioning and each offers a different purpose
The Pegasus line provides responsive cushioning
Each category comes with an “icon” model (i.e
the Vomero 18) and a “plus” and “premium” option within their categories
The idea is meant to simplify the lineups and create a more “intuitive” way to select a running shoe
but it will be interesting to see where these lines go
I was happy to hear the latest iteration is the “most cushioned Vomero yet.”
The update comes with 6mm more foam underfoot (now 46mm in the heel)
a top layer of ZoomX and bottom layer of ReactX
This is the first time we’ve seen ReactX foam in the Vomero family
reduces the carbon footprint by 43% and increases energy return by 13%
The outsole is designed with a high abrasion rubber
more flex grooves throughout and the iconic waffle lug pattern for plenty of durability and traction
the upper comes with a new engineered mesh and more padding through the collar and heel
but let’s find out how it felt out on the roads
THOMAS: I’ve had my ups and downs with the Vomero
The trainer has tried to do a lot of things over the years
and Nike has clarified Vomero’s role in the running lineup
and the Vomero Premium will be Nike’s most cushioned and comfort-focused lineup
It appears that Nike is off to a good start
and the ZoomX top with a Cushlon 3.0 bottom had us holding our breath
thinking it could be the return of the Nike Turbo
I’ll skip that and the part about walking around
so I didn’t have a hard reference point or really many expectations for this shoe
I was also one of the few people to actually enjoy the InfinityRN 4
but has honestly been stale for at least the last three years
the Alphafly Lite) had me rooting for Nike again and actually excited for what’s coming down the line
I’ve put close to 30 miles on that shoe and it’s for sure the most exciting Nike shoe in years outside of its race-day staples
I try not to weigh shoes or even look at the weight of shoes before a review
but I did come into the Vomero knowing it weighed a lot
There are not a small number of adequate trail shoes that weigh as much as the Vomero
I thought this shoe would be a Ben Folds brick
but I was pleasantly surprised that it was more of a comfort cruise through steady seas
it runs much lighter than its suggested weight
which is an acceptable trade-off for the loads of luxury surrounding the foot from top to bottom
The engineered mesh upper features a half booty from the toe to the midfoot and a tongue that’s thicker than a concrete milkshake
The Vomero foregoes traditional eyelets for Nike’s loop-style lace system with a secure attachment point at the bottom
A faux microsuede heel counter gives a bit of extra support
it offers just the right amount of rebound to avoid feeling like a marshmallow
Which is kind of the problem I always had with the Invincible– it was too unstable
and the shallow heel collar always gave me heel slip
and the React X is stable enough to balance out the top layer of ZoomX
It’s a surprisingly stable shoe for how much stack height it comes with
I didn’t have any issues with the 10 mm drop
but I know plenty of people would like to see that taken down to at least 8 mm
With the high stack and soft combination of foams
otherwise you may have some trouble getting up to the toes
MEAGHAN: I typically like the aesthetics of Nike shoes
and the extra padding around the collar and tongue adds to the overall comfort and plush feeling
I found the shoes fit true to size with some decent room in the toebox (not super typical for Nike shoes)
My favorite update to this shoe was the increased stack and addition of ReactX foam
it’s great the foam reduces carbon footprint and all that jazz
but I’m just happy with how it feels out on the roads
It’s soft and comfortable but also comes with some nice bounce
I think the rockered geometry also helps with the smooth transition and turnover
The added stack was especially nice in the forefoot
where I felt the previous version could bottom out a little
The Vomero 18 felt cushioned throughout and the miles just seemed to click by
I was expecting all that rubber on the outsole to make the shoes feel somewhat blocky
The added flex grooves allowed the shoes to bend more naturally with my stride
I still feel like Nike trainers are designed with more structure and support than other typical trainers
While we see a lot of similar trends in uppers
adding generously padded tongues and collars
Comfort is well thought out in the Vomero 18 upper
It’s no easy task to get an upper that works on both Meg’s and my feet
low-volume foot felt cozy without having to crank the laces down
There wasn’t even any puckering over the vamp
Running on the ZoomX ReactX combo is smooth and well-cushioned without feeling dead
but it’s plush and surprisingly stable
This midsole is made for cruising comfortably
The word that comes to mind is “flow.” It is a shoe you can run mindlessly in
The outsole is hardy but doesn’t interfere with the smooth underfoot feeling
and the thicker rubber will help with durability
the weight could probably be trimmed up a little bit
but I sense a trend within Nike that weight will not be a focus within the Structure/Vomero/Pegasus lines
What we’ve seen so far gives us a glimpse into what we’ll see in the near future
I’m really trying to figure out if Nike’s focus is on creating the best running shoes
or creating the best lifestyle shoes that you can run in
but a slippery slope once you start skating on it
The full-length Zoom Air unit in the Pegasus premium (which admittedly looks cool as hell but also makes the shoe a beast)
the mediocre attempt at replicating the Peg Turbo with the Pegasus Plus
and now the wildly cushioned and built-up Vomero 18
I’m not saying it’s necessarily a bad thing
especially if they keep up with the fantastic performance line
And that’s kind of where the Vomero 18 fits in
but it’s also probably your mom’s favorite walking shoe
but I’ll lean towards running shoe because I legitimately have enjoyed all my runs in the shoe
Last couple things: the tongue is absurdly thick
The whole thing is going to be quite warm come summer
but there are plenty of sections of exposed midsole
MEAGHAN: My main complaint about the last iteration of this shoe was the weight
it’s a little on the heavier side at 8.65 oz (246 grams)
but it’s distributed well throughout the shoe so it really didn’t bother me out on the roads
I also think we’re just getting used to shoes being heavier with all the stack
THOMAS: Robbe dips into the Peg Premium and styling
but I’ll save that for the Peg Premium review
I’ll stay on the Vomero 18 even though I am excited to discuss the Vomero Plus and Premium
we have race-day shoes that get down to insane weights without sacrificing cushioning
daily trainers have tossed out weight concerns and focused on comfort
I can’t recall the number of daily trainers over 11 oz./312 g we have reviewed in the past four years
Some actually work if the weight is distributed well and the foam is amazing
Although the Vomero 18 weighs 11.7 oz./332 g
the shoe still works and achieves the intended result
I can’t help but wonder what this shoe would be like if you could find a way to knock some weight off
I wouldn’t recommend the Vomero 18 for all your training
It is really good at cushioning and comfort but isn’t a versatile training solution
You will want another shoe for your tempo days
ROBBE: The Vomero 18 is a max cushion winner for me
And as someone who doesn’t love max cushion
it’s doing a pretty good job of catfishing me
I definitely wouldn’t mind grabbing this shoe again and again for more long runs or easy days
but if you’re looking for a ton of comfort in a Nike running shoe at a very fair price point
MEAGHAN: It’s nice to see Nike showing up strong in the daily trainer world
For a while it seemed like we got amazing race shoes… and that was it
The Nike Vomero 18 is definitely my favorite version of the shoe yet and I’m excited to see what else is coming in this new category (spoiler alert: we saw the Vomero Plus and Premium versions at The Running Event
if you’re looking for a structured but bouncy daily trainer
You nailed the race shoes but left us wanting more in the training department
the last three shoes I’ve reviewed have all been exceptional
The Pegasus Premium is in a class of its own
and the Vomero 18 nails cushion and comfort
we got a sneak peek at the future of Nike running
You can pick up the Nike Vomero 18 for $150 on February 27
I’m not that excited about the 18 reading the review
Says this isn’t available till the end of February 2025
but it’s currently 5th in your daily trainer rankings
I get you’ve reviewed it but how is this a “top ranked trainers right now” when I can’t get a pair for over two months
BITD it was mileage in heavier trainers and speed and race in flats
I appreciate that the industry has a lot of goldilocks shoes out there
but having a nice plush daily trainer like the new Vomero 18 is a nice option
the $150 price shoe with ZoomX and ReactX compared to other models with similar midsole in nike lineups are all $20+ more
This is a great value despite the knock on the weight

The winterized version of the Vomero is built atop a grippy rubber outsole that’s been paired with a beefy midsole that bolsters cushioning and energy return
Mated to the bottom of the shoe is a set of uppers that are cut from a combination of suede and textile and fortified via a water repellent finish and a chunky rubber mudguard
Nike has also treated the Zoom Vomero Roam to highly-adjustable toggle-equipped elastic laces
and reflective details on the laces and heel pull tab to help the shoe’s wearer more easily be seen in the type of inclement weather they were designed for use in.
As you’d expect from a contemporary release from the Pacific Northwest sportswear giant
the Zoom Vomero Roam benefits from a host of advanced and proprietary technology and features
This includes the use of the Nike Air Zoom cushioning units integrated into the midsole
as well as Nike’s High Abrasion Rubber Tech — or “HART” — outsole which uses less rubber compound than the brand’s other XDR rubber constructions without compromising on durability in the slightest
because the outsole utilizes less material
which is an obvious plus for any running shoe
The immense comfort and sleek aesthetic of this winterized running shoe has also lead to it being widely embraced by the fashion and streetwear scenes.
Currently offered in three colorways including a fully-blacked-out version and the Black/Light Silver/Jade (seen here)
the Nike Zoom Vomero Roam Winterized Running Shoes are available now
Nike is setting the tone for Spring 2025 with a fresh update to one of its most versatile silhouettes — the Zoom Vomero 5
the beloved runner comes dressed in a bold and energetic “Sundial” colorway that pushes the boundaries of seasonal footwear with its vivid color blocking and technical construction
Built for performance but styled for the streets
the new edition continues Nike’s run of expressive releases that seamlessly blend function with forward-thinking design
While the Vomero 5 has built its reputation on comfort and durability
this latest iteration proves that it’s just as capable of turning heads as it is racking up miles
With a standout palette and eye-catching textures
the “Sundial” edition is ready to become a staple in both running rotations and fashion-forward wardrobes
The standout feature of the “Sundial” Zoom Vomero 5 is
the orange base acts as the canvas for the sneaker’s more layered detailing
This vibrant tone injects a punch of color perfect for spring transitions — bold enough to stand out
yet wearable enough to pair with everyday fits
Offsetting that brightness are black suede overlays, which add structure and balance to the otherwise loud design. These darker panels tone down the orange without muting it, making the colorway visually dynamic without leaning into chaos. It’s the kind of contrast that Nike often uses to give its sneakers character
the Zoom Vomero 5 “Sundial” carries all the technical specs that have made the model a quiet favorite among sneaker fans and runners alike
The shoe features Nike’s TPU midfoot caging
a detail that’s both functional and stylistic
it comes in a deep black that blends into the suede and mesh layering
offering support and structure without drawing attention away from the bolder components
The metallic silver leather Swoosh adds a subtle but sharp detail
reflecting just enough light to keep things interesting
Matching hits of silver show up throughout the shoe
including subtle accents that catch the eye without stealing focus
Additional branding includes the tongue tag
an embroidered mini Swoosh on the heel in orange
giving longtime Nike fans a few thoughtful nods
Tying it all together is a white Cushlon midsole that anchors the look while offering plush comfort
The bottom half of the sneaker is completed with a multi-colored Zoom Air outsole — mostly black and gray with hints of white — that’s built for impact protection and everyday durability
the Zoom Vomero 5 has been adopted by lifestyle wearers for its unique shape and comfortable ride
and responsive cushioning make it a solid option for daily wear
whether it’s for a full day of city trekking or a weekend casual flex
The black laces and black lining give the shoe a neat
while also helping ground the more colorful upper
These touches give the shoe a practical edge
ensuring it remains versatile even with such a vivid main color
The balance between retro-running aesthetics and current-day styling makes the Vomero 5 a perfect choice for those looking to move away from more minimal sneakers
It’s got enough detail to stand out without being overwhelming — and this “Sundial” version amplifies all the best parts of that formula
The “Sundial” Zoom Vomero 5 is expected to land in Spring 2025
perfectly timed for a season that’s all about reemergence
With its citrus-inspired palette and street-meets-performance feel
the sneaker is likely to appeal to both collectors and casual wearers looking for something outside the norm
As Nike continues to reintroduce the Vomero 5 in fresh new colorways
It has steadily carved out its space in the rotation — not just among running models
but also within the broader lifestyle sneaker landscape
For those eager to grab a pair, keep an eye on nike.com and authorized retailers as spring approaches
Whether you’re gearing up for longer days or just refreshing your rotation
the “Sundial” is a strong contender for a standout seasonal pick
Input your search keywords and press Enter
Nike continues to push the Zoom Vomero 5 into the lifestyle space with a fresh new colorway called “Sanddrift.”
this version blends Sanddrift and Hemp tones with deep black overlays
The layered mesh and synthetic leather upper enhance durability while keeping things breathable for everyday wear
The sneaker also features signature elements like TPU side cages and a sculpted heel counter
A cream midsole with Zoom Air cushioning ensures all-day comfort
The black and tan outsole keeps things grounded in more ways than one
It transitions smoothly between seasons and styles
Whether you pair them with joggers or wide-leg pants
while the insoles carry a unique globe-style logo
The Nike Zoom Vomero 5 “Sanddrift” will release in Summer 2025. You’ll find them at select Nike Sportswear retailers and on Nike.com
It’s a solid pick for summer rotation and beyond
Notes: Nike has debuted its Zoom Vomero 5 silhouette in a “Sail/Mink Brown” iteration
The upcoming women’s exclusive is built with a white mesh base and matching leather overlays
while the “Mink Brown” color are scattered across the lining of the panel swoosh
The shoe then rests on a white midsole with hits of the earthy hue crawling from the midfoot to the heel
while white laces tie it together for a neat finish
2025 5:00 AM EDTMen’s Journal aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links
and it’s now on sale in multiple colorways
The Nike Zoom Vomero 5 is on sale for $103
up to a 39% discount from its usual price of $170
It’s available in two colorways (Platinum Violet and Khaki) at that price
three other colorways are available for $112
and a third colorway (Denim Turquoise) is on sale for just $97
It’s available in sizes 3.5 up to 15
though they're already flying off the shelves in specific colors
The Zoom Vomero 5 features a head-turning upper with lots of swooping overlays—a classic Y2K sneaker hallmark—made from both real and synthetic leather
a mesh textile upper provides visual contrast and boosts the shoe’s breathability
while padding on the tongue and ankle collar ensures a comfy fit
The midsole features Nike’s Zoom Air technology—essentially an air-filled cell that compresses at landing and springs back into shape at toe-off
providing both cushioning and energy return
a generous rubber outsole offers lockdown grip on the pavement and good durability
One summed up the Zoom Vomero 5 as “extremely comfortable
and stylish.” Another shopper said they’re “Really comfortable
“They're supportive without being stiff
with good cushioning front and back.”
“They’re a dream on your feet,” said a third reviewer
Prices are accurate and items in stock at time of publishing.
But even though the colourways are super low-key
the hype surrounding this retro silhouette still rumbles on
But this Zoom Vomero 5 isn't just about its incredible looks, either. Because when this model first debuted back in 2011, it was actually a really good running shoe designed for really good runners
That's why it comes equipped with a Cushlon foam midsole that's infused with Zoom tech for max comfort
As you might've already expected, the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 ‘Light Bone’ is set to drop sometime this summer. It'll be available at Nike, the Snkrs app, and select stockists, and will set you back £145 a pop.
In 2025, Nike is completely revamping its running lineup into three pillars
The Nike Vomero 18 is the Icon entry in Nike’s max cushion/cushioned comfort pillar
Nike will release the Vomero Plus and Vomero Premium models (which I’ve seen and am excited about) to create a full suite of max cushion shoes
To get a feel for how the line will eventually look, we can review what Nike did with the Pegasus pillar. Nike built out its responsive cushioning/responsive ride pillar with the Nike Pegasus 41, Nike Pegasus Plus, and the upcoming Nike Pegasus Premium
The way the shoes and their use cases are laid out makes sense
but the individual performance of each model within the pillar varied
Nike will build out a Structure/supportive cushioning/stable support pillar in 2025 as well, but all we’ve seen so far from that pillar is the Nike Structure 25
If Nike can add some fun back to the support category
it will be a nice change of pace for those who want added stability in their running shoes
Those seeking support are often given short shrift in terms of aesthetics and attention
Will the Icon entry for the Vomero pillar fare better than the Icon entry for the Pegasus pillar (which received middling reviews)
At WearTesters, we’ve been Vomero fans for a while, and last year’s Vomero 17 was Nike’s best daily trainer
So we certainly hope Nike gets this one right
The Nike Vomero 18 ushers in some big changes to the model by replacing the Vomero 17’s ZoomX and Cushlon 3.0 midsole with a ZoomX and ReactX midsole
The ZoomX is a thin layer on top of a big hunk of ReactX
because the total stack height in the heel is 46mm with 36mm in the forefoot for a 10mm drop (the same drop as in the previous Vomero)
That’s a 6mm increase from last year and the largest stack height ever for a Vomero model
Nike’s max cushion pillar is off to a great start
The Vomero 18’s weight increases by 19% for both men and women over the Vomero 17
Nike tweaked the rocker geometry of the midsole to help the Vomero 18 feel more balanced and smooth at its higher weight
The Nike Vomero 18’s turnover is really good for a max cushion
no one will call the Vomero 18 clompy or bulky
That’s one of the keys to creating a well-loved max cushion shoe
But there is a big caveat about that underfoot feel. The massive amount of ReactX made the midsole feel more like the Nike InfinityRN 4 than the Vomero 17
but it feels more like the InfinityRN 4 with a soft top layer of ZoomX underfoot – well
without the everpresent arch from the InfinityRN 4
The InfinityRN 4 was a very good shoe that was only polarizing because of the aforementioned arch
so it makes sense to sprinkle some of its good parts into other models
but it means that the Vomero 18 doesn’t feel as much like a Vomero as it does a frankensteined hybrid
For those who haven’t tried the InfinityRN 4
the gist is this: while the cushion is there and works well
it doesn’t feel as squishy or bouncy as the Vomero 17
Below that chunky midsole is a reworked outsole which has thick
waffle-patterned rubber in all the potential high-wear areas and tries to save some weight with a less dense
boxy pattern at the middle of the forefoot
It’s a pattern that won’t be as durable as the previous model (all rubber everywhere) but will be durable enough for the typical 300-500 mile running shoe lifespan
Though the engineered mesh upper and lacing are different from the Vomero 17
Nike did add a heel pull tab that is helpful in putting on and removing the shoe
The Nike Vomero 18 fits true-to-size lengthwise but isn’t particularly accommodating for wide footers
If the Vomero 18 gets a wide version like the Vomero 17
I’d recommend most wide footers opt for the wide version in order to be completely comfortable
efficient ride where the extra cushion shined enough to make the weight increase a non-issue
The Vomero 18 is the most effective at easy or recovery running paces
with some extra effort on the wearer’s part
it can go uptempo for short periods of time
This is a change from previous Vomero models
as Nike has doubled down on the cushion aspect at the expense of the speed aspect (leaving the latter to the Pegasus pillar)
The Nike Vomero 18 also has enough cushion to be a great option on long runs and can even handle all the planned marathon training long runs of 20+ miles
The outsole gripped multiple surfaces and did well on looser surfaces
The waffle pattern continues to deliver fantastic results
The majority of shoes that fill the exact same use case as the Vomero 18 are found at the $160 price point
so we get the rare instance where the Nike model is priced lower than most of its competitors
and long training runs are its sweet spot and where its smooth turnover shines
Fans of the Vomero and InfinityRN series alike should give this new shoe a shot
It’s pretty close to the best of both worlds; and though it might not be able to go as fast as it used to
it aligns well with Nike’s new 3-pronged (pillared?) [Editor’s Note: works for me] approach to running

the Vomero 18 is Nike’s most cushioned shoe ever—but does it make a difference
today’s running shoes are getting thicker and more cushioned
brands can now stack more foam underfoot without sacrificing performance
The previous stack ceiling used to look more like 30-40 mm
but as the new 46 mm Nike Vomero 18 proves
adding more foam meant creating a less stable platform
but modern engineering has tackled that issue head-on
such as wide underfoot platforms with flared soles at the base
helps stabilize the foam and enables taller stack heights to feel more secure
And if there’s a shoe that typifies this shift
Nike’s latest lineup revision uses three categories: the “Vomero silo” for maximum cushioning; the Pegasus line for everyday running; and the Structure family as the go-to supportive option
Within each category are three models: a base or icon model
The premium and plus will utilize more advanced technologies
such as additional ZoomX foam or Air Units
Two current shoes in the cushioned category—the Infinity Run and Invincible—will eventually be phased out
Let’s dig into the Vomero 18 to see how Nike’s max cushioning family actually performs
Weight: 11.5 oz (men’s 10) / 9.2 oz (women’s 8)
Men’s $150 at Running Warehouse Women’s $150 at Running Warehouse
I’m aware that I subconsciously form preconceived expectations about how the shoe will perform
when I received the Vomero 18 in late November
This gave me a great opportunity to take my first run with a completely open mind
I initially felt that the comfort level was off the charts
The Vomero 18 is by far the most comfortable iteration I’ve tested in Nike’s Vomero line
Everything about the shoe is plush and luxurious
especially the heavily padded engineered-mesh upper
the Vomero 18 instantly felt familiar—like I’d been running in it for months
breaking in a new running shoe feels like adjusting to driving a car that’s not your own
I naturally settled into my preferred cadence without having to think about it
I assumed it was around the same height as its predecessor
When I later got the specs from the Nike rep
I was dumbfounded to find out the Vomero 18 had a whopping 46 mm of foam under the heel
making it Nike’s thickest cushioned shoe ever
I was doubly shocked at how stable the shoe felt
Although brands are getting better at making taller-stacked shoes less tippy
The Vomero 18 didn’t feel particularly high at all compared to other shoes of similar height I’ve tested
A few design elements contribute to the Vomero 18’s more grounded feeling
the shoe has a wider base platform than previous Vomero models
the dual-density midsole combines foam and a new version of React X that Nike claims has 13 percent more energy return
React X is meant to provide structure and support on the bottom
more energetic ZoomX—found in Nike’s Alphafly and Vaporfly lines—is layered on top for a bouncier ride
The one downside to having this much cushioning (and foams) is weight
The Vomero 18 weighs 11.4 ounces for men and 9.2 ounces for women
making it among the heaviest shoes of this type
it’s certainly not a shoe made for uptempo running
I found the Vomero 18 bulky and cumbersome to carry through the stride
and I could certainly feel its weight underfoot
easy runs and everyday mileage when comfort and a plush ride are a priority
my relationship with the Vomero has improved over the years
I’ve found each incremental change inched the shoe towards my plusher preference
After running in the Vomero 18 over several distances at a variety of paces
I’ve found it to be one of the best training shoes from Nike in some time
I’ve found Nike’s everyday trainers to be a bit underwhelming compared to the competition in recent years
and the Vomero 18 is a step in the right direction
While Nike has concentrated on dominating the carbon fiber racing shoe market with their flagship Alphafly and Vaporfly racing models
and Brooks have stepped in to capture a significant share of the everyday comfort trainer market
it’s clear that Nike is making a change by revamping their trainer roundup
Nike has made a bold commitment with the redesigned Vomero 18—outside those who prefer a minimalist feeling
I’d recommend this for every type of runner
As long as you don’t need to pick up the pace
the Vomero 18 delivers everything I’d want in a maximum cushioned shoe
Asics Superblast 2, Brooks Glycerin Max
