Manchester — A drama-filled stage play here on Easter Sunday revived family entertainment in this south-central town and sparked camaraderie among rival communities
bringing hope for stakeholders that the area is likely to remain crime-free
Jamaican author and scriptwriter Roger O Williams told the Jamaica Observer that the stage play
achieved his vision of bringing together the communities and reaching scores of young people
because for the last 15 months Porus has been getting a lot of bad publicity
Everything coming out of Porus is either curfew
or highway cut out the town,” he said in reference to murders there throughout last year and the traffic bypassing the town due to the May Pen-to-Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000
“I personally came up with the idea to revive this play to send a positive message to the youths of Manchester
because the parish has been in turmoil for the last couple of months
and we created the Manchester Higher Heights drama group to showcase the youths who are not only in Porus
It was a stark difference from the cries and loud explosions that erupted in the area following incidents of violence
including a double murder at a bar in close proximity to the centre last December
The violence had resulted in months of curfews being imposed in Porus
adding to the economic hardship following the opening of the highway
The curfews were lifted last month by the police with a warning that the area must remain crime-free
Williams said members of the cast — namely Dana Smith
and Clayton Thompson — were first-time performers
“A young man from Craighead is in the play
so the purpose of the group and the play is to showcase the talent of the young people and to encourage others to unveil their hidden talents,” he said
They didn’t know that they had this talent
so my purpose as a director and writer is to help youth
It is like a social intervention programme,” he added
He said the involvement of young people brings about optimism for rural Jamaica in the arts
“For most plays the cast are from Kingston
it will shine a positive light on this little village that has a lot of talented people
We hope to encourage others across Jamaica to do the same and get involved in the arts,” he said
who was the lead writer for the play in 1985 at the same community centre in Porus
was intrigued by the creativity of the drama group
He highlighted Williams and Barrington “Timex” Powell who are co-writers of the original play
Williams said funding for plays can be a challenge
but with help from small business owners and members of the Jamaican Diaspora
“The turn out was great and it motivates us to go on,” he said
When they heard about the group and my intention they donated mics and props
It is very encouraging to see people who are not from Porus making this possible,” he explained
Williams is no stranger to the performing stage
as he is a former member of the popular theatre producers Jambiz International
“I came in plays like Ras Noah and the Hawk and Class of ’73,” he said
Williams took on several roles as producer
This play was conceptualised by a Rastafarian elder
It was written in the 1980s by him and a comedian
a Jamaican living in the Turks and Caicos Islands
was amazed at the play and the dedication of Williams and the cast
“I came here because I met Roger online through his books
He is just an awesome person in terms of his creativity
and when he told me he was doing this play I decided that I had to come here,” she said
“I was really impressed by the production and the whole content of the play
It brought about a spirit of camaraderie within the community
This was a good way to bring the community together.”
I got the message that although life may not be going your way and people might bring you down
it is the same people who got [your] back and might help,” he said
are looking forward to more stage plays at the community centre
“This play helps to cut off crime and violence
Tickets were sold out and we would love to do this again another time,” he said

Manchester — A political representative in this south-central parish has reiterated her concern that the once-thriving Porus has become a ghost town for two reasons — curfews and the highway that allows most of the traffic to bypass it
Councillor Claudia Morant-Baker (Jamaica Labour Party
Porus Division) has taken issue with the continued imposition of curfews and has called for a town hall meeting between the Manchester police
“I must commend the police for taking this step to come to Porus
Porus has been a hot spot and it has been a hot spot for a [while]
We pray that the community will go back to [its regular] operation as it used to
because this is one step in the right direction
I am going to request the team that is here to organise a community meeting
I wouldn’t mind if it [is held] by the end of the week,” she said on Sunday at the Manchester police’s annual church service in Porus
“We are ready to meet and talk with the police
because Porus has some genuine concerns that we need to be heard
because the businessmen and women of this community are crying out and they are saying to us
‘Come and let us talk together,’ ” she added
and Porus has accounted for at least five of the homicides committed between September and December
Morant-Baker is adamant that the curfews should be reviewed
“We want to know how we can team up and fix the problem that exists here
and we can’t do it without you… Porus is dying
“The highway mash up Porus and now the curfew is killing it
come let us talk together,” she said in reference to the toll-free May Pen to Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000
The councillor underscored the importance of police and citizen partnership to restore peace and economic activity to Porus
you know what is happening in your community
Let us be partners to keep the community alive
You won’t understand until it touches your home
until it touches somebody you know,” she said

THE curfews imposed by the police in sections of Manchester have proven to be a double-edged sword
especially for people who live and operate businesses in Porus
the Constabulary says the security measure is necessary to bring murders and other violent crimes under control
residents are fuming that the curfews are having a deleterious effect on their ability to make a living
The residents have been airing their complaints for months
and last Wednesday their frustration came to a boil at a town hall meeting at Trinity Baptist Church in Porus
Take the case of a vendor who told the meeting that her business had declined since the imposition of the first curfew last October
described herself as a “small business owner” selling soup and other cooked food
She explained that she starts cooking at 9:00 am
Most of her sales come after people leave work
but with the curfew hours starting at 6:30 pm she rarely gets sales and is therefore forced to dump most of the food
“What can I make from my small business when there is a curfew
We are suffering in Porus from the curfew,” she cried
That vendor’s experience is not unique as other business operators’ grouses have been aired in this newspaper in recent weeks
who organised the town hall to discuss security concerns
including the continuous imposition of curfews over the past six months
were at pains to defend the measure while expressing sympathy for the residents’ plight
Deputy Superintendent of Police Lohas Daniels
said that he understood the social and economic constraints caused by the curfew but juxtaposed that with the potential loss of life due to crime
Deputy Superintendent Daniels told the meeting that the measure is working because
Manchester has seen a 40 per cent reduction in criminal activity
is how can the authorities find the right balance between keeping crime in check while ensuring that residents are able to make a living to meet their financial obligations
one devoid of the emotion displayed by mayor of Mandeville Donovan Mitchell at the town hall meeting
While we agree with him that what is needed is for the authorities to sit with the people “and to see how best we can help to alleviate some of the problems”
we can’t ignore the fact that as Mandeville’s first citizen and head of the parish’s local authority he should have already had the police
and the other political representatives talking about this matter before it got to this stage
the residents of Porus and other communities in Manchester under curfew are on the horns of a dilemma
It’s an unpleasant reality but it demonstrates to the country the disruptive nature of criminal behaviour
should give law-abiding Jamaicans cause to unite against criminals
and share information on their nefarious activities with law enforcers
Regardless of criminals portraying themselves as modern-day Robin Hoods
Jamaicans should not be subjected to the type of life that now exists in Porus
Forty-eight-hour curfews have been imposed in sections of Mandeville and Porus in the Manchester police division
The curfew began in Mandeville began at 6:20 p.m
on Thursday and will remain in effect until 6:20 p.m
while in Porus the curfew began at 7:00 p.m
The areas for the curfew in Mandeville are as follows:
North: East along an imaginary line from Royal Flat Road
2800 meters to an area of Bartley Town in the Comfort community
2500 meters from an area of vegetation at the eastern boundary at Hillside community to an area of vegetation in the Rent Land Street community
7600 meters from the northern boundary at Bartley Town
to an area of vegetation in the Hillside community
7500 meters from the southern boundary at Rent Land to the northern border at Royal Flat Road
North: (Bordered by Clarkes Town district)—along an imaginary line from the intersection of the toll road and Melrose district
200 meters to a section of Porus main road
South: (Bordered by Reeves Wood)—Westerly along an imaginary line from the eastern boundary
East: (Bordered by Water Mount dist) south along an imaginary line
2400 meters from the northern boundary at Porus main road to Redberry district
West: Northerly along an imaginary line from Redberry to the south boundary
1200 meters to the north border intersection at the toll road and Melrose district
all persons within its boundaries are required to remain within their premises
unless otherwise authorised by the ground commander

Jamaica — A 16-year-old Porus High School student has been hospitalised after he was stabbed allegedly by his schoolmate during an altercation on the school grounds on Wednesday afternoon
Preliminary reports from the police are that sometime before 5:00 pm the teenager was on school compounds when he and another student had an argument reportedly over $200
The argument escalated in a physical confrontation when one student pushed the other and a ratchet knife was used to stab the schoolboy in his side
He was rushed to the Mandeville Regional Hospital where he has since been stabilised by doctors and admitted
chairman of the 10,000 men and families’ movement and head of Jamaica Renew Programme
said he is among the church leaders targeting hot spots in Manchester
“We are here in Porus and Porus is one of the eight communities that are flaring up with violence
We recognise that Mandeville particular is not the same that it used to be
so we are here in this community to send a message loud and clear to all perpetrators of crime and violence
those who are violence producers that it is time for us to change the way we behave in our communities and in this nation,” Edwards said on Thursday at a prayer breakfast in Redberry
criminals should not be allowed to continue wreaking havoc
“We want to see Jamaicans live loving and be kind to one another
so the few men and women who are pushing the wrong things and pushing up the murder rate in this community
We are sending you a message that Jamaica doesn’t belong to you alone
There are hard-working citizens in this community… and now some of them have to be running away from their community,” he said
“We want to see Jamaica change and that is the reason why we are here to send a message loud and clear that Porus belongs to all
not just a few,” added Edwards as he added his voice to the call to reduce Jamaica’s murder figure for 2025
“We want to take this down below the 1,000 range
We are calling on all Jamaicans to come together
Let us bring the murder rate down below the 1,000 range for 2025
Jamaica is a blessed nation and must continue to be blessed and not to be destroyed by evil men who are pushing violence,” said Edwards
“We are letting it known that Porus must change and all the other communities that surround Mandeville,” he added
The Manchester Police Division recorded a 19 per cent decrease in major crimes last year when compared to 2023
but the parish recorded 50 murders up from 44 the previous year
Porus recorded five between September and December
host pastor of the Glad Tidings Church in Redberry
said the curfew in Porus has affected the church over the past four months
so much that we plan programmes that could not happen
because even our rally that was planned for October could not take place
“We rescheduled the rally for another time and it was also another curfew that put it off
We rescheduled that for a Sunday and we said yes
then for the third time we did not have it
We had to do a makeshift internal rally in a Sunday morning service,” Thompson added
He pointed out that the church has been forced to go online similar to during the COVID-19 pandemic
“We have to resort to doing prayer meetings and Bible studies online
When it comes to the police I commend them a whole lot on what they are doing… We are working with them and we do what we have to do so that the communities can come together and peace can reign,” said Thompson
chairman of the Porus Ministers’ Association and coordinator of the Porus Renew Initiative
said the church is striving for peace in Porus
“We see the crime in Porus with even now Porus being under curfew
We really see that the church needs to be involved and we feel the call to respond
We have started to initiate initiatives to solve the problems in Porus,” said Blake Jr
we will be having street meetings in some of the volatile communities
the hot spots that the police have identified and on the 25th we are having a rally targeting the children
On the 26th we will have a mega street meeting across from the Porus police station,” added Blake Jr
Following the prayer breakfast the religious leaders walked through Porus and its environs
Jamaica — Police are now on the scene of a murder in Porus
Manchester where a man was shot dead on Saturday
Relatives named the victim as Christopher Manning
Preliminary reports are that sometime before 9:00 pm
Manning was at a meat shop across from the Porus Market when he was attacked by gunmen
His attackers reportedly opened fire on him
This latest incident comes a day after two gunmen shot and killed two people at the Mandeville Market and injured five others

Manchester — A political representative here says an ongoing feud between neighbouring communities is causing fear among residents and is believed to be the motive behind a series of murders
including the shooting death of a man on Monday night
“I am very concerned about the spate of crimes in the parish of Manchester
I thought there was a slowing down in terms of the murders
but to hear that there was a murder on Monday night in Clarke’s Town
was shot dead while walking to his Clarke’s Town
Residents told the Observer that about 9:40 pm they heard loud explosions and subsequently found Stephens’ body with a gunshot wound to the head.Residents theorise that Stephens was walking home when he was attacked and shot less than 150 metres from his house.Detectives processed the scene late Monday night as Manchester’s murder figure increased to 44 following the incident.Statistics from the police show that up to Saturday
Manchester recorded 43 murders since the start of the year when compared to 38 for the corresponding period last year
Mitchell said tension is high in Porus despite multiple meetings between the police and residents
“There is something brewing between the young men within the area from the various communities
I know that there was a shooting in Trinity
There was also a shooting on a young man in Porus
so this is the second victim from Clarke’s Town,” he said
“I am told the rift is further down in Redberry and Trinity
The police haven’t confirmed it but what I am hearing from the residents within Porus is that there is a rift going on between young men from various communities — Redberry and Trinity
specifically — and somehow you have persons who have taken sides,” he added
“We are going to see how best we can put a lid on the problem itself
[We have to] identify who the players are to see how best we can combat this issue because Porus is the gateway to Manchester… We will not allow a few rotten apples to make Porus a place where people live in fear,” he said
Clarke’s Town is one of several areas in Porus which was under curfew in recent weeks
Mitchell made it clear that he supports the initiatives deployed by the police to mitigate crimes
“All of the councillors have met with Deputy Superintendent Duncan and the Mandeville police on a number of occasions since the spate of violence started
But I want to encourage citizens themselves who have information [to tell the police],” he said
“I know there is some kind of hold on entertainment permits for the areas where we have murders
and it will continue now that we have another murder
The police will get the full support to ensure that whatever is needed will be done to put a lid on what is happening,” he added

Manchester — Residents in this south-central parish are worried that a spate of crime
has cast a dark cloud over Porus and is raising panic among citizens
Porus Division) said she is worried that Christmas will be sad in the usually peaceful area
“Stay home and don’t go on the street if you don’t have to
because right now I am [seeing] a sad Christmas for the Porus Division and its environs
I hope it doesn’t impact it in a big way; I am going to encourage them to go out as early as possible and get their business done,” she said on Wednesday
and a man identified only as “Stevie” were gunned down about 7:35 pm at a bar operated by the Chambers in Porus
Another man was shot and injured outside the bar and remains hospitalised
Police said a suspect identified only by his alias
who reportedly challenged them in a running gun battle
was fatally shot in the adjoining community of Ramble
Police said they are searching for an accomplice who escaped on a motorcycle
Morant-Baker said Tuesday’s incident follows recent murders and shootings in Porus and has left herself and residents living in fear
“The concern is genuine because it is happening in broad daylight
so I just want to encourage persons please try and be safe
and with what has been happening for the past couple of months
it is a serious concern to residents,” she said
“I am very concerned and hope that this will come to an end and that persons will take responsibility and stop this foolishness that is going on and taking people’s lives
Councillor Mario Mitchell (People’s National Party
Bellefield Division) said that an ongoing feud between neighbouring communities in Porus is causing fear among residents
“The little playground has become a battlefield and the little playground is Manchester
I am surprised and devastated at the recent flare-up of violence in Porus and other sections of Manchester
This is something that is very concerning to us as leaders across Manchester,” he said
“We want to ensure that the police will do every single thing in their power to ensure that the people of Manchester have a peaceful Christmas… Porus has seen a flare-up of violence in recent times,” he added
A relative of the bar operator told the Jamaica Observer that her family is puzzled and questioned what could be a motive for the attack
“I was home when I got a call that Chin got shot
I don’t know of her and anyone being involved in anything,” said the relative
A senior police source said detectives are probing allegations that the suspect had confronted Chambers at the bar during the day on Tuesday
Reliable source also told the Observer that Chambers and her suspected killer are cousins
said the criminals have instilled fear in Porus and adjoining areas
“People are whispering and worried about reprisals,” said a police source
Police have since maintained a strong presence and patrols in Porus
told the Manchester Chamber of Commerce recently that Porus has been on the police’s radar as a crime hot spot
“In recent times we are seeing the challenge that we are having in Porus – Trinity and Redberry – in particular… Porus is a concern to us
The issues we are having we refer to them as interpersonal
among persons who have conflicts with each other
For most of the murders that we are seeing in the parish none is actually connected to other offences… that is why we refer to them as interpersonal,” Duncan said last month
Official figures from the police show 47 murders in Manchester up to November 30
an almost 14 per cent increase over the 41 recorded for the same period last year
Tuesday’s incident increased the number of murders in Manchester to 49 since the start of the year
DSP Duncan also told the business community that lottery scamming and overseas players were fuelling violence in Manchester
“These murders occur where we have persons who were once friends having their differences and disputes emanating from the lottery scamming activities
but from where they are they are influencing a lot of things within the space,” he said
“We would not want to classify it really as a gang activity
These are persons who were once in the same yard having the dumpling out of the same pot
but because of the spoils from lottery scamming activities we have the breakaway of the issues surrounding them,” he added
Porus Division) speaking with the Jamaica Observer on Wednesday
MITCHELL… I am surprised and devastated at the recent flareup of violence in Porus and other sections of Manchester

Goswami uncovers the deep-rooted Indo-Hellenic connections that continue to shape historical narratives across continents
Over the years I have travelled from North Africa and Central Asia to Europe
in order to study Greek historical sites and monuments
Being aware of the Indian and Hellenic connection of archaeological excavations and studies conducted at the Casa de Medusa in the historical town of Alter do Chão
known during the Roman period as Abelterium
I reached Lisbon two days before the end of 2024; the decorations were a feast for the eyes indeed
and soon I was informed by Chief Archaeologist of Alter do Chão Jorge Antonio that he would arrive the next day in Lisbon for a detailed in-person interaction with me on this topic and would bring along with him maps and photos of the excavation site
relishing Pasteis de Nata and hot chocolate while looking at the beautiful red roofs of houses in the Alfama neighbourhood of Lisbon and the Tagus River beyond
I recollected what Strabo wrote about the region that is now Portugal
he mentions the existence of Greek colonies at the mouths of the Tagus
Soon I received the message of Antonio’s arrival
and the meeting was held at Cafe Nicola in the Rossio neighbourhood of Lisbon
The conversation focused on the Indian and Hellenic connection of Alter do Chão and how it can be utilised for strengthening relations between India
Here is a summary of what exactly has been found in Alter do Chão
The mosaic was found at the House of the Medusa (Alter do Chão
during construction work on a municipal football pitch
It was first excavated in 1956 by Bairrão Oleiro and later by António Brazão in 1980 and 1982
António is the municipal archaeologist of Alter de Chão is the third archaeologist to excavate at this site
He began excavating in April 2004 and identified the mosaic to be that of King Alexander and King Porus
so called because the Gorgon is depicted on Alexander’s shield
a Roman town mentioned in Antoninus’ Itinerary
Medusa’s house was built in the second half of the 3rd century AD and the dining room with the Alexander and Porus mosaic was built inside the peristyle garden in the first half of the 4th century AD
rooms with mosaic floors and others in opus signinum
a peristylium with a garden in the centre surrounded by two corridors with mosaic floors have been identified in the house
there are only three Roman mosaics in the world depicting Alexander: The Battle of Issus (House of the Faun in Pompeii
Lebanon) and the House of the Medusa (Alter do Chão
The mosaic found in Portugal is the only one preserved in the original place where it was found and is the only one depicting battle of Hydaspes
Antonio observes that Porus was a valorous king
in only two battles did Alexander face a king on the battlefield
who unlike Darius continued to fight heroically on the elephant until the end of the battle
Alexander asked Porus how he wanted to be treated and Porus replied
which perhaps indicate his response to Alexander
Meroe a long-time friend of Porus and a soldier is also depicted
he was commissioned by Alexander to bring Porus to him and he was the translator for the two kings
The battle took place on the eastern bank of the Hydaspes River
The bottom right-hand corner of the mosaic depicts a river god
He is holding a palm tree in his left hand
The river god Hydaspes has his right arm over a vessel pouring water that flows towards the sea
The god Ocean was always represented as an old man with a beard
Alexander had an enormous fascination with the Ocean
Last year was the 2350th anniversary of The Battle of Hydaspes and the truce following it
which catalysed the inter cultural interaction between the Hellenes and Indians for centuries to come
that played an important role in the development of several disciplines like science
philosophy and medicine by the Indo-Greeks; who were inspired by the intellectual achievements of Indian and Greek scholars of antiquity
Alexander’s impact can be seen in different countries across the world
His conquests have been loadstars to the imperial aspirations of Julius Caesar and Napoleon among many others
Alexander’s greatest challenge was met in India
He was unable to advance beyond India’s frontier regions towards the Gangetic belt
particularly Pataliputra (Greek name assigned by Megasthenes was Palibothra now known as Patna) then capital of the vast Nanda Dynasty
One reason given for Alexander’s retreat from India is the bravery of Porus
King of the Paurvas also known as Maharaja Parmananda Chand
Alexander faced Porus at the Battle of Hydaspes
Both gained a mutual and deep respect for each other
The Katoch Dynasty in India which ruled Kangra
Even though the depiction of Porus is not heroic in the mosaic because of the bias of the Romans towards the victor Alexander
but the fact that they chose to depict him shows the impact he created in the wider world
by the valour he displayed against the Greek leader who defeated super power of the ancient world Persia
By deciding not to surrender without fighting
Porus ensured that he gets respected in wider Hellenic world and later Roman world as a brave warrior
Lot has been written about the expansion of Hellenic artistic influence in Europe
the Roman mosaic in Alter do Chão is an example of this with an Indian connection as well

After liberation Chaya married Simon Palevsky, a fellow partisan, and moved to New York, where she cofounded “Nusekh Vilne,” an organization dedicated to preserving the cultural legacy of Lithuanian Jewry. A kind, grandmotherly figure who never lets visitors to her home leave without homemade snacks
she recently left New York after 73 years and now lives in Jacksonville Florida

"It took place in block D in 3KL capacity reactor of 4-Nitro-N-Methyl phthalimide
The reaction is carried out at a temperature range between 150-180 degrees centigrade
The uncontrolled reaction temperature might have led to pressuring the reactor
said vice president Technical D Prasada Rao
The injured workers have more than 75 percent burns and are undergoing treatment in Vijayawada
"We have initiated an inquiry to ascertain the details of the incident
We are trying to figure out what led to the accident

the 22 year-old Clarendon mechanic who was charged with the 2022 murder and robbery of supermarket owner Jin Xian Ye in Porus
avoided going to trial by pleading guilty to a six-count indictment
who was charged for murder and three counts of making use of a firearm contrary to the new Firearms Act
as well as robbery with aggravation and wounding with intent
was sentenced by Justice Leighton Pusey during an in-camera hearing in the Home Circuit Division of the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston to a cumulative 82 years
For the murder count Frazer was sentenced to life imprisonment with eligibility for parole after 15 years
For the three counts of making use of a firearm contrary to the New Firearms Act
the 22-year-old was sentenced to 15 years each
For the wounding with intent count he was sentenced to 12 years
and 10 years for the robbery with aggravation count
The sentences were ordered to run concurrently
so that he will effectively serve 15 years before being eligible for parole
A senior prosecutor representing the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions
speaking with the press following the sentencing
emphasised that parole is not granted automatically
She further noted that even if Frazer is granted parole after the 15 years expires he will remain under supervision for the rest of his life because of the murder conviction
she said: “These sentences were recommended by the prosecution after considering the early guilty plea
the facts of the case and certain administrative processes and enactments which allows us
in respect of the making use of the firearms under the New Firearms Act
although the legislation says the mandatory minimum for that offence is 20 years
after careful consideration the DPP’s office recommended 15 years imprisonment,” she said further

With as big as the promo showcases things to be
The story of Alexander and Porus dates back to 350 B.C
...where India is shown as a country that has remained untouched by invaders
The promo first introduces us to Alexander The Great and how he aims to conquer the 'Sone Ki Chidiya - Bharat.'
And all too soon, the voice over introduces us to Porus
who successfully prevents Alexander from not only conquering India but also successfully driving him out of the country
The makers have invested a lot into the show and have shot it on a grand scale at mesmerising locations
And the portions that haven't been shot at real locations can boast of excellent VFX which just brings the scenes to life
We were particularly floored by Rohit Purohit's look as Alexander The Great
the shot in which the makers have focused on Rohit's eyes is absolutely gripping
With something so epic and massive being showcased in a mere few seconds
there is nothing bad that can be nitpicked from the promo
The first promo of Porus has raised our expectation levels even more and we eagerly await the second one. Even though it has an ensemble cast, the lead roles of Porus and Alexander assigned to Laksh Lalwani and Rohit Purohit respectively seem tailor made
It certainly can be called the epic war drama we have been waiting for
According to a report published by global consulting firm KPMG in November 2022, the specialty chemicals sector in India holds significant importance in driving the country's economy. It currently contributes around 7% to the GDP and is projected to reach $304 billion by 2025, a substantial increase from $178 billion in 2021.AdvertisementBain CapitalPorus LaboratoriesShare article on

Chanakya takes the vision of Akhand Bharat forward and propels Chandragupta Maurya from being a carefree petty thief to a celebrated king
SANGEETA YADAV speaks to the actors about the second innings
With an end of Porus who died with the vision of akhand Bharat (united India) and fought against Alexander
Chanakya takes the story forward with the rise of yet another warrior in the making
The show Porus highlighted the king’s journey and how he and Chanakya worked towards the vision of a united India and prevent outsiders to invade India
Porus succeeds in convincing Alexander to leave India who leaves his general Seleucus Nicator behind
After the assassination of Porus by Seleucus
Chanakya takes his thought forward and goes to Dhananand
who insults him and considers everyone like dirt
Chanakya tells Dhananand that from this speck of dust he will create a mighty king who will take the vision forward
“Chanakya realised that Dhananand has joined hands with Seleucus and is not able to see the future
the Greek Army will take over and impose their culture on us
religion and language of India will be lost
Which actually happened when Britishers came,” Tarun Khanna
says adding that the show will air at the same time slot
every Monday to Friday 8 pm on Sony Entertainment Television
Chanakya goes on tell the story of the making of India’s brave and most celebrated King in the Indian history — Chandragupta Maurya
Kartikeya Malviya says: “I am doing an in-depth study on the life of Chandragupta Maurya
Since the show will throw light on the childhood days. Chandragupta
who had innate abilities of leadership and was a problem solver and a great friend
I will have to work hard to play different shades of the character
doing masti with friends and create light moments which is very contrary to playing Shani Dev in the serial.”
Chandragupta Maurya was a reluctant student who had no feelings for his motherland and harboured only one goal — to earn his freedom from the hunter who he was sold to as a child
was a wise strategist with a vision of a united India
But how do these two people with such contrasting nature join hands
He and his gang of friends were petty thieves
One thing which Chanakya found endearing was that Chandragupta loved his mother but never said it openly
He thought that a person who loves his mother so much will ultimately come to love his motherland as well
That thought made Chanakya bet on this boy and convinces Chandragupta to be his mentor
This brings a big transformation in his life,” Khanna says who draws similarities between Chanakya and Mahatma Gandhi
“Mahatma Gandhi too was insulted and thrown out of the train in Africa and realised that this is not a personal issue but a big concern for India and its people
He came back to India and made others join his fight against prejudice
he could have also become the Prime Minister but he gave the power to Jawahar Lal Nehru
The most powerful person is one who has everything and gives it to somebody else
His aim was not to rule a kingdom but to make a king out of an honest and just man
He could have easily said to Chandragupta Maurya that you become my commander-in-chief and I will be your king but he chose to be his educator and advisor
Chanakya makes a king out of a commoner,” Khanna tells you
Through the concept of linear story which is used for the first time on Indian television
one historical show has paved the way for another without taking a break. “Every end is a new beginning
For the first time on Indian TV one story will move into another seamlessly
It’s like one chapter will end and the second will start
The key characters from Porus will take the story ahead in Chandragupta Maurya
one of the biggest warriors of our country who had created a united India against foreign invasion,” says producer and director Siddharth Kumar Tewary
Where Sourabh Raaj Jain will be playing Dhananand and Vikas Verma as Seleucus Nicator
Chandragupta Maurya’s mother will be essayed by Shefali Sharma.
